'Hotline to Iran' Aims to Head Off War
WASHINGTON - Members of Congress joined religious and civil society leaders today in an urgent call to stop the "drumbeat of war" with Iran and open up diplomatic talks to resolve growing tensions between Washington and Tehran.
"We hear the same people who supported a disastrous war in Iraq now steadily beating the drum for war with Iran," said Congresswoman Barbara Lee, adding: "We have been down this road before."
Lee joined Reps. Ron Paul and Sheila Jackson Lee in a "Time to Talk to Iran" event on Capitol Hill, organized by the Campaign for a New American Policy on Iran (CNAPI), along with groups such as Physicians for Social Responsibility and the American Friends Service Committee.
The event featured 1960s-style red "hotline" telephones that enabled people to speak with ordinary citizens in Iran, including Washington, D.C. tourists attracted by the outdoors event.
Outside Washington, Americans were mobilized to call their Congressional representative to urge direct dialogue between the two countries.
A bill sponsored by Lee, the "Iran Diplomatic Accountability Act of 2008," is gathering momentum in Congress. The Act calls for the appointment of a high-level envoy to conduct direct, unconditional, bilateral negotiations with Iran.
The Capitol Hill event reflects the sharp divisions within the United States over how to deal with the regime of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, particularly in regard to Iran's nuclear program and activities in Iraq and the Middle East.
The International Atomic Energy Agency has confirmed that Iran's nuclear program is aimed at producing nuclear energy, not nuclear weapons, but the Bush administration remains unconvinced. Washington demands that Iran suspend its nuclear enrichment program before talks can begin.
The Bush administration also accuses the Iranian regime of fomenting conflict in Iraq and the Middle East.
In response to what it sees as Iranian meddling, according to CNAPI, current U.S. policy toward Iran is to "publicly threaten and insult Iran, while taking provocative actions such as adopting a policy of regime change, attempting to increase unilateral sanctions, deploying additional military assets in the region, and arresting Iranian representatives in Iraq."
Iran, meanwhile, is concerned about Bush administration efforts to extend the presence of U.S. troops in Iraq beyond the current end-2008 UN mandate.
During a Sunday visit to Tehran by Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki, Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei stated: "The presence of occupiers in Iraq, particularly the U.S. armed forces...is the main obstacle to unity in Iraq."
A wide spectrum of U.S. military, political, and civil society leaders, along with ordinary Americans, believe that these very real tensions should be addressed by direct talks and diplomacy, not veiled threats.
A February Gallup Poll found that nearly 7 of 10 Americans favor direct political and economic engagement with Iran over military action.
Retired Army, Air Force, and Navy officials, such as Army Generals John Abizaid and Wesley Clark and Admiral Michael Mullen, currently head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have also spoken out in favor of diplomatic engagement.
Retired Air Force Lt. Col. Sam Gardiner stated succinctly in a speech last month to the Academy of American Diplomacy: "You have no military solution for the issues of Iran. And you have to make diplomacy work."
Former Secretary of State Zbigniew Brzezinski and Lt. General William Odom agreed in a May 26 contribution to the Washington Post: "The United States would have a better chance of success if the White House abandoned its threats of military action and its calls for regime change."
Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton called during their presidential campaigns for direct contact with Iran as the best way to begin ironing out differences. Presidential hopeful John McCain has repeatedly belittled that approach, calling it "naive."
But McCain's Republican colleague Senator Chuck Hagel has also called for action on the diplomatic front.
Hagel wrote to President George W. Bush late last year, warning that the United States finds itself in a "dangerous and increasingly isolated position," and urging that "now is the time for the United States to actively consider when and how to offer direct, unconditional, and comprehensive talks with Iran."
While issues of war and peace were not resolved through today's hotline conversations, they gave both Americans and Iranians an opportunity to remember that dialogue is possible, and served as a reminder by seasoned politicians that Congress can and must play a role in preventing war.

Show AllThis is nice but removing Bush and Cheney et all from power is what is really needed.
Keep your head in the sand McCain
Finally, some in our government are awake and paying attention! We cannot afford another blunder.
And Obama, the man without soul? He is silent now, so that he can later come on board with his support for this extension of war against Iran, Syria, and Lebanon that is being pushed. This is a bi-partisan rush to create yet more war in the region.
Any "military solutions" by the USA in regards to Iran will constitute as WW3. Too many nations would be involved, including USA allies to USA detriment. So USA...chill. Ok? Please! for the sake of humanity get off your high horse!
"Iran is the biggest threat to World peace" several Americans may claim...
Iran has not invaded anyone since the Persian Empire the last time I checked. This would be about 2000 to 3000 years ago since present-day Iran has ever declared war or even been involved in aggressive actions against a nation if only to defend itself. Compare this to the USA - a 230 year old country that needs to be involved throughout the world every couple of years somewhere.
"Iran is creating havoc in Iraq to the detriment of the USA" some Americans claim...
I thought USA and Iran were on the same side in regards to Iraq. After all, the USA WANTED a Shiite-controlled Iraq. Obviously! Since the USA wants Iraq to be a Democracy, the Iran-friendly Iraqi Shiites will gain control of Iraq based on simple majority. Hey USA this outcome is what you truly wanted so be happy about it. Ok? :-)
I do not understand why the USA is so upset at Iran. Both countries should be allies.
The USA administration is stuck in the mud; they believe that power lies in the gun and the USA has the biggest gun of all. What a dumb idea. In the last 50 years time and time again the USA has tested their invincible militaary and each time you in the USA has lost to a very inferior and primitive enemy. Why shy away from mentioning that the mighty USA went up against Vietnam, then against Korea, then you went up against Iraq, and Iran etc. and every time you lost. HOW DUMB CAN YOU GET. Has it ever crossed your mind that the best weapons in the world is no match against the human brain.
I don't believe that I need go into pages of tirade, because I believe it is not human to be that stupid. In simple terms, the thinking of the Americans is that we have the weapons to defeat the Iranians within 7 days; yes, you will be right to think that way, but like Iraq, will the Iraqis let you occupy Iraq indefinitely? Will the Iranians allow you to stay in Iran indefinitely, until the oil runs out? I think not ! Yes ! in Iraq you too believe that that arch traitor Al-Maliki will sign away Iraq to stay in power, but I think he will fail, because he would if he could, but the people will reject the USA, and it will cost the USA too much in men and treasure to stay the course.
The USA is the worst and most evil hegemonic power in all of history.
If a man is waving a gun around threatening to hurt people, setting up a HOTLINE or blog so people can talk about it isn't going to help the situation. The person with the gun must be brought under control.
bush and Cheney need to be removed from office to face jusdicial proceedings. Once that is done, de-escaltion with Iran can occur.

Safiyah: Obama talks change in domestic policy, but in foreign policy he advocates more of the same militarism. He's part of the elite class which still advocates military intimidation and war over economic strength. Under Obama the US will continue its decline.
yap.chongyee: Well, I'm not sure the US is the worst and most evil hegemonic power in world history, but it certainly is the most hypocritical. It has forever portrayed itself as standing for and with the good, yet it invariably has supported anti-democratic, dictatorial regimes in other countries as long as they are far to the right. That fact reveals the reality of the United States--the fascism just under the surface of things. Meanwhile the unthinking and incurious US population is kept distracted with sports and other diversions so they won't get in the way of the ruling class' plans to remain the world hyperpower. Of course those plans are no failing bigtime because the elites became too greedy made fatal mistakes in macroeconomic policy.
It really is a shame that congress and the american people do not have enough power to stop this insane administration from starting a war with Iran. It seems to me that bush/chaney and that entire crime family should be able to stand trial for the crimes they have committed. I think that Dennis Kucinich and Vincent Bugliosi were "spot on" in their assessment of what should be done with this administration. To do anything else is to encourage future administrations to disregard the law and send the message to the american people and the world that the rule of law is just a phrase that has no meaning in truth!!!
Could people in this country be so stupid as to allow the bush White House to sell them another war? Good God! Enough is enough, isn't it?
There's not going to be a war with iran. Bush is not going to leave his party with yet another defeat (we would, in the long run, surely be defeated) and 10$ a gallon gas. He's just talking trash to scare them.
No one, not even me, supports an iran war.
"...Congress can and must play a role in preventing war". But how? The proto-fascists in the White House and their ilk in Israel act as if they are beyond the law, and if they want war, what will stop them from having it?
The more I listen to Obama talk about Iran, Cuba, Afghanistan, and Healthcare that will include higher insurance industry profits -- not singlepayer, pumping more into the military -- the more I learn about who his advisers are and their past support of issues that do not benefit working Americans, the more I wonder just what kind of real change he means when he talks about change.(Obama's advisory team includes Harvard economist Jeffrey Liebman, a former Clinton adviser, who believes we ought to privatize social security. Then we have the renowned David Cutler, another Harvardite, who believes our economy can be boosted through an increase in privatized health care costs. Writing for New England Journal of Medicine in 2006, Cutler explained, "The rising cost ... of health care has been the source of a lot of saber rattling in the media and the public square, without anyone seriously analyzing the benefits gained."And that's just the tip of a very large iceberg.)
The Dems always talk about change that never happens once they're in office. (AND REPUGS ARE DEFINITELY OUT OF THE QUESTION)
"The Bush administration also accuses the Iranian regime ..."
Why is author calling bunch of appointed war criminals administration, and democratically elected Government of Iran regime?
I guess only in "Democratic" West ....
For Safiyyah: You must be some kind of nut or else you just like to get old men like all excited. Where did you come up with that bull shit?

In 1953 the CIA orchestrated the overthrow of the democratically elected Government of Iran and installed the "Shah".
In 1968 the CIA installed Saddam Hussein in the Baath Party in Iraq, and in 1979 he became the President in Iraq.
In 1980 the USA supported Iraq in it's war against Iran, and supplied both sides with Armaments, including "Chemical" weapons.
In 1981 Israel Destroys the Nuclear reactor that Iraq was in the process of building.
Israel has been in the "Custody" of nuclear weapons since 1968. One year after they orchestrated the "1967" WAR.
If Israel wants Peace it Should realise that most people in the world are not on their side.
Iran,watch out!
Diplomacy,US version.
I'm only going to say this once, so please, everyone pay careful attention.
George W. Bush has maintained that the only way we will have high level discussions with Iran is if they meet us according to conditions that we have laid out beforehand. This is to say that we will tell them what is to be and they must agree to it.
So after we tell them what is to be and they agree to it, there is no longer anything to talk to them about because they've already agreed to what we would have talked about if we had sat down to talk.
If you're going to imply that I've just gone around in a big circle and accomplished nothing, you're getting wise to that game called politics.
Dubya, and now McCain following in his footsteps because he wants votes from the same dumb people who re-elected Bush in '04 who all knew the reason for going into Iraq was a sham, are constantly taking jabs at Obama and suggesting that he is naive because he is willing to sit down and talk with Ahmadinejad without setting conditions. Obama is willing to do so because, even if he can't win the man over and get for this country what it wants regarding resolving of the nuclear energy/weapons situation, he has enough confidence in himself to try.
I remember last year when "The Runt" came over here to be insulted by the Dean of Columbia University, he granted an interview with NBC's Brian Williams. Among other things, he challenged George W. Bush to an internationally televised debate, which of course our fearless leader declined.
Why? Because Ahmadinejad would chew him up and spit him out.
Sure, he likes to shoot his mouth off but anyone with half a brain can see that he's only denying the holocaust cause he knows its the best way to piss off Israel and the U. S.
Threats to wipe out Israel? Did you ever see Willie Pep get in a ring with George Foreman?
(Boy, am I dating myself)
See y'all manana!
Mr. Obama, how about a referendum now?
Barbara Lee got dissed when she was the ONLY person to vote against our reactive aggression against Afghanistan and later Iraq. She was right on both counts from the very beginning. Maybe they should listen up now.
Ariel Sharon?
Why would anyone want to claim the name of another "great" war criminal? I thought he was comatose. I pray he still is because if he is not the US would definitely attack Iran -- at the request of Sharon. He is responsible for the massacres of the 2 Palestinian refugee camps in South Beirut. I was there! The UN wanted to try him for war crimes for that incident but once again the US was the only country to veto the measure. Sharon is responsible for the current intafada when he claimed Jerusalem as the undivided capitol of Israel! Anyway, if you want to contribute to peace in the Middle East I would change your user name. Some people, such as Iranians, Iraqis, Lebanese, Syrians, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and a lot of Israeli Jews, might find your user name offensive and counter productive -- as I have. All occupations in the Middle East must end. It is time the US and the rest of the world offer the Arab people and Persians the dignity and respect and love they deserve (all mankind deserves). When this happens there just might be peace. I am American. I spoke out against the Iraq war before the first bomb was dropped. I was even interviewed for the news. Everything I said turned out to be true. Not all Americans have their hands in the sand. Some of us are intelligent and compassionate people as I find most Arabs and Iranians are. America has destroyed its standing in the world and I am afraid we are on the path of no return. After all, we have war criminals in office who should have been turned over to the UN long ago -- along with their friend Sharon and Ohlmert.
irishrose,
Fairy Dust, YOU ROCK!!!!!!!
Responding to The Lorax:
"If a man is waving a gun around threatening to hurt people, setting up a HOTLINE or blog so people can talk about it isn't going to help the situation. The person with the gun must be brought under control."
I think it's apples and oranges here. The way to get control of this particular "person with a gun", who has a power unprecedented in the history of the world and (unbelievably) a (brainwashed) army of supporters, will be through a massive effort over a (too) long period of time, including individual, private actions of dissent to larger more public displays of discontent. We have to applaud them all while (as long as they're non-violent)while we champion our own (non-violent/destructive) methods.
irishrose: I doubt very seriously that the neocon hiding behind the nickname "Ariel_Sharon" is at all opposed to war with Iran. In my experience, they invariably support every fraudulent casus belli against Iran, then claim that they're not in favor of the war. What I think they mean is: "I'm not in favor of it *yet*, but when it starts, I'll be cheering."
Among the other neocons are people like Wesley Clark, the seventy-some senators who signed on to the Kyl-Lieberman resolution, and at least one of the two major party candidates for President of the United States.
I'm glad that Ariel Sharon is commenting on CD. It means he's ready to face trial and be hung as a war criminal!
Iran under American control would give it not only the biggest military but free access to most of the world's oil. Kaaaboooommmm!

Outside of liberal blogs Congresswoman Barbara Lee has virtually no credibility and is considered a loony left wing radical by mainstream America as they have been taught to think by the MSM. Bush is not going to allow any "hot line", he wants Iran to remain the boogeyman he has created. Forget the rest, Bush is still President and Congress is impotent. Will he go to war, I doubt it as he has plenty on his plate now, Of course that didn't stop his daddy from leaving Clinton with a mess in Somolia.
All the hype of a possible war in Iran is good to keep oil prices high. I am more inclined to think this is all bluffing. However, with the psychopaths we have in power, who can predict anything.
It has already become all too clear to me. The last great war has already begun. The war for the control of the planet's diminishing resources. Both Iraq and Iran have massive reserves of energy. Energy boys and girls, ENERGY. Iraq was merely the first step- a necessary military move- another place to set up camp for the oncoming slaughter. Iraq for the bases necessary to wage a regional war- picking off resource laden countries one at a time. Terrorism (ask jack London about "terrorism"- read the Iron Heel just to see if the future's predicted better there than 1984) and nuclear ambitions are just two of the reasons (excuses) that the great world power will use in it's ever growing appetite for energy. We can only wonder how it will all turn out. The Russians and Chinese will certainly have something big to say before the whole thing plays out. Wonder which of them will be our next "ally" and which the new member of the axis of evil. Always said I wanted to live in interesting times. Fuckin' a I got my wish....
I'm a Viet Nam Vet, my grand kids lovingly refer to me as older than dirt, we laugh. My point is I been there and people like Bush and that other chicken hawk are people like kids I grew up with. Where, when you step out into the streets you better be ready to defend yourself or stay off the streets. A lot of people are going to resist forcibly what you try to bully them to do, they would rather fight then run. Bush and Cheney never grew up on those streets. if they had they wouldn't be in a hurry to start fights that others are willing to go toe to toe. That's how I see it, no matter how tough you were there was always somebody willing and able to deal with what you had to throw out there.
As the US continues it's belligerence and arrogance, with a meekly complicit Europe following along, the rest of the world is slowly forming alliances as a countermeasure. Hostilities with Iran could get very complicated.

These "very real tensions" with Iran are manufactured by the bush regime and then treated as valid by the corporate media and the corporate candidates.
Why do progressives allow the periodic demonization of other countries to dominate the discourse? They pick a country to trash, and we spend hours trying to point out the irrationality of it.
Work for Cynthia McKinney for president. Anyone who preferred Kucinich should now support Cynthia, and anyone who has any hope for saving our planet should do the same.

Let the festivities of World War 3 begin!
The elections might not even be canceled since with either McCain or Obama, Israel will get its wish to start nuclear holocaust against the rest of the planet.

I'm only going to say this once, so please, everyone pay careful attention.
WHY do you assert an Authoritarian inclined Post? You must be high like booting some Her-O-in, or snorting something, yeah????You are unknowledgable in the way of this world, regardless of age. You should know better, attempts to force a personal thought upon all on CD is very high and mighty on your part. Give us info., links, outcomes and why but indeed you are only going to say something ONCE, who the fuck cares. Say it 1000 times it will be ignored use by acting all knowing will certainly cause anger towards your condescension towards us. Words are a powerful way to share a thought , used in way that only a friend of the entitled Lords and Noblemen excluded by our Constitution as ones with titles will never exist in the US is indeed self absorbed on your part. Be angry, useful, factual, forceful and humane and many ears will hear you, please.
Words to listen too America" those that live by the gun, shall die by the gun".
The world is tiring of your hubris. You are near economic collaspe, and your military is spread thin.
Perhaps it is time America to consider another path?
Iran is the Enemy of the United States because it has "Oil". Iraq was the Enemy of the United States because it had "Oil". Afghanistan was the Enemy of the United States because it had access to the Caspian Sea "Oil".
None of the above countries has ever been a threat to Attack, Invade, or Occupy the United States. So, why are they all a "Threat to U.S. National Security"? The United States has 750 Bases and they all need "OIL"!
Maybe if the American People were given the right information instead of a group of Retired Generals working as Propagandists for the Department of Defense, the American People would have understood that the Invasions were nothing more than the "Political Elite" wanting it all.
Iran is next. Germany is willing to go along with the United States because their Prime Minister is also a member of the "World Political Elite"......
Until the American People start to question the "Alleged Demolition" of World Trade Center #7 with the use of explosives (More than likely suggesting an inside job to all the events of 9/11) and linking the attacks of 9/11 to the Invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran will be next.
A growing number of progressives are helping to "head off war" by voting third party progressive in all of their individual exchange/association. This helps starve the elite gang and shrink it small enough to drown in a bathtub.
This thoughtful appraisal comes almost the same instant as the report that the latest effort to impeach Bush has been put on the shelf to gather dust. If Bush launches the Iran attacks he so assiduously desires, the House leadership that refuses to consider impeachment will share his guilt. While Bush's warmongering of 2002-2003 is being repeated, this time against Iran, the House leadership fiddles. Shame on the cowards!
Now is it obvious that our culture is one of distraction? The government is telling the people to fear Iran. Why? So we pay less and less attention to the actions of the government (ie USA PATRIOT ACT, GITMO, EXTRAORDINARY RENDITION etc).
Our government is using Iran as a scapegoat. The government wants us to not pay attention to what is happening within the United States. Distraction is key. Keep the people ignorant. This is the perfect way for any government to have complete control of the population. Refuse to be docile. Keep asking questions - DO SOMETHING! Don't let the torture in Gitmo and all over the world go unnoticed. The US may be the most powerful nation in the world - but the American people have the most powerful voice in the world. Everyone listens to what we say - lately, we haven't said anything.
Now it's our time to show our concern and our disapproval of the government. Do not let the government distract us any longer - it's our time to take back OUR NATION. "WE THE PEOPLE..." NOT WE THE POLITICIANS!!!
