Climate Findings Were Distorted, Probe Finds
An investigation by the NASA inspector general found that political appointees in the space agency's public affairs office worked to control and distort public accounts of its researchers' findings about climate change for at least two years, the inspector general's office said yesterday.
The probe came at the request of 14 senators after The Washington Post and other news outlets reported in 2006 that Bush administration officials had monitored and impeded communications between NASA climate scientists and reporters.
James E. Hansen, who directs NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies and has campaigned publicly for more stringent limits on greenhouse gases that contribute to global warming, told The Post and the New York Times in September 2006 that he had been censored by NASA press officers, and several other agency climate scientists reported similar experiences. NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are two of the government's lead agencies on climate change issues.
From the fall of 2004 through 2006, the report said, NASA's public affairs office "managed the topic of climate change in a manner that reduced, marginalized, or mischaracterized climate change science made available to the general public." It noted elsewhere that "news releases in the areas of climate change suffered from inaccuracy, factual insufficiency, and scientific dilution."
Officials of the Office of Public Affairs told investigators that they regulated communication by NASA scientists for technical rather than political reasons, but the report found "by a preponderance of the evidence, that the claims of inappropriate political interference made by the climate change scientists and career public affairs officers were more persuasive than the arguments of the senior public affairs officials that their actions were due to the volume and poor quality of the draft news releases."
The political interference did not extend to the research itself or its dissemination through scientific journals and conferences, the investigators said. "We found no evidence indicating NASA blocked or interfered with the actual research activities of its climate scientists," the report said, but as a result of the actions of the political appointees, "trust was lost, at least temporarily, between the agency and some of its key employees and perhaps the public it serves."
Kristin Scuderi, a spokeswoman for the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in an e-mail that director John H. Marburger III "would not comment until he's reviewed the report, and he has not yet done so yet. Therefore, OSTP has no comment at this time."
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.), one of the senators who pressed for the investigation, said in a statement that the report showed that citizens had been denied access to critical scientific information that should inform public policy.
"Global warming is the most serious environmental threat we face -- but this report is more evidence that the Bush Administration's appointees have put political ideology ahead of science," Lautenberg said. "Our government's response to global warming must be based on science, and the Bush Administration's manipulation of that information violates the public trust."

Never before have Americans experienced such dangerous manipulation of essential scientific data, as used by this administration to derail vital environmental reforms, conservation, family planning-- and the list goes on. The resulting long term environmental and social damage are beyond measure, and can only worsen if not curtailed.
Despite their clandestine cloak, or environmental friendly disguise, these sellouts have been evident since Bush first was handed the presidency. They have been exposed by defectors from the EPA, health & human services, etc; and have been documented and chronicled by numerous dedicated environmental organizations including The Union of Concerned Scientists.
The gravity of these unprecedented betrayals eclipses the Monica Lewinski scandal which led to an impeachment, and pose greater dangers than Watergate which terminated a presidency.
Blame falls mainly on the populace and our legislators for tolerating this reckless and arrogant occupant of the White House.
1. "Climate change," which used to be "global warming," is now called the "Climate Crisis." Get with the program!
2. Impeach Cheney first.
Hi ~Lessbread~ Kennedy says methane gas is seeping out of the Arctic's perma-frost and it cannot be measured.
It's seeping out alright, read the prior link I posted. Methane gas is spewing out like broken pipes all over the Arctic and it can be measured and it is. Last year methane levels in our atmosphere rose .05% which is alarming.
Here is another three minute read of what Methane in our atmosphere will do if we don't attempt to control it. It is not funny.

So, Dick and Bush distorted the truth again, what else is new...
Keeping informed helps to understand the problem, but it does nothing to directly combat the or resolve the problem. Information without action is useless. Spreading the news is good, cutting back on the use and dependance on fossil fuel is better. In this case action speaks louder than words.
Are you doing your part to combat the global warming that is causing climate change?
Yeah, and they have a dozen Global warming/Climate change denyers blogging comments here at Common Dreams who help them with their attempts to distort the truth. Misanthorpe and Lizard lead the pack.
We are doing our part in our family and if we were all run over by a concrete truck tomorrow and smashed like bugs, it would not make any difference.
We must have a "world wide massive" effort to develop clean energy and stop burniing coal ASAP for starters. There is no other option.
The same media outlets that repeated the Dick and George distortions will still be in place when a new pres takes office. I never thought the day would come but now I'm counting down and I honestly think that hope is on the horizon. The legacy of the "evil doers" is written in 8 years of incompetence and corporate greed.
And now for your current methane weather report.
The remaining permanent arctic pack ice appears to have split into two large sections. One section is above Ellesmere Island and Greenland. It stretches to the North Pole or slightly beyond. The other section is above Western Siberia for a few hundred miles off the coast. The ocean in these areas is solidly 100% covered by ice.
One-winter ice covers the rest of the Arctic Ocean, in a wide swath from Alaska to Eastern Siberia and Europe. All of this fragile ice now appears to be in the first stages of fracturing and melting. 80% ice coverage has become sporadic if not frequent across this entire area, allowing some sun penetration into the ocean.
In particular, the ice above eastern Siberia is in full melt, and may be gone in two weeks.
Where did you get this info?
From the iceman.

Just kidding Paul.
This is current also. __ An important three minute read.

RAY: 8 critical years... with time of the essence and the ship of state maneuvered into the shallowest of waters for a sheer banquet of the vanities.
My source is the Cryosphere Today site. They carry 30 day satellite image strips with false-color maps of percentage of ice cover. Compare this year's current coverage to last year's explosive melt sequences in their archives.
This year, two areas stay quite black through the whole 30 days of images. The rest of the ice gets progressively violet toward June 1, 2008, with one little flash of red one day near the north pole.
Last year, first a big swath was violet or 80% ice-covered, then that whole area got red or 60%, then the remaining unmelted ice was clustered yellow and clear holes popped up and finally the remaining ice shrank away from the holes.
Great info ~PaulK~. Thank you.
The Bush Administration has deliberately shaded, distorted or hidden facts from the public in every area from WMD distortion to the economy inflation rate so this info not only doesn't surprise me, but is prdictable. The union of concerned scientists(UCS) put out a list of distortions or falsehoods in science topics that showed the wide extent of their crimes.
Thanks for the follow up Paul. Very interesting, if not scary..
It's not only climate change. Science has been distorted, ignored, and everything else. The Union of Concerned Scientists has a A-Z list of interference in science.

KEM PATRICK SAID:
"Hi ~Lessbread~ Kennedy says methane gas is seeping out of the Arctic's perma-frost and it cannot be measured.
It's seeping out alright, read the prior link I posted. Methane gas is spewing out like broken pipes all over the Arctic and it can be measured and it is. Last year methane levels in our atmosphere rose .05% which is alarming. "
KP, in the interest of clarifying the scientific statement Kennedy said methane seeping out of perma-frost cannot be measured. You pointed out that methane accumulation in the atmosphere can be measured. The two metrics are not identical since perma-frost seepage of methane reflects only that source of atmospheric methane. Atmospheric methane reflects both diverse sources and removals due to bacterial action etc.
Dubya's gonna veto the climate act now in congress, if it ever passes. Saving the world is just too expensive when you have wars to wage.
~The Prof~ I wasn't criticizing ~Lessbreads~ post BTW, I was concfused by Kennnedy's comment and amused by hs choice of words of "seeping out".
Methane is "spewing out" in vast quantities. I can see we cannot measure the amount "seeping out" but we sure know how much has spewed out, once it gets into the atmosphere.
They needn't worry now. People are only tempted to be altruistic when it doesn't involve giving up anything - when they are comfortable enough. Now people are watching prices going up they are going to clamour for whatever policies return them to cheap petrol and cheap energy and cheap food. And the rest of the world can go hang. That's human nature, and no it isn't nice. A lot of people are going to die, but they won't be the people with the power to make a difference, so that's okay. Western "civilisation" will prevail.
They aren't going to do anything because they don't want to do anything. They are making too much money off of the present system to want to change it. When they "figure it out", it will be too late.
Saving the world is not a problem. Earth did fine before we came along. It will do fine without us.

Ruth K: Thank you for the listing of "Union of Concerned Scientists"
What a pity that we have wasted 8 long years with this incompetent administration. They know how to make and spend billions, but to them the future is of no concern.
Everyone should log on to that site.
The culture change which should have begun more than 30 years ago is inevitable now.
Nationalize our natural resources, take control
of oil out of the hands of private families.
And, let's start to put electric cars on our roads.
We can raise a corporation to do this and replace
all the gas-guzzlers in 3-5 years.
We can subsidize both manufacture and purchase.
The oil industry has always been at war with the public and with a people's government which may try to regulate them.
Could Methane Trigger a Climate Doomsday Within a Human Lifespan?
[snip]
A new paper published appearing Thursday in the prestigious scientific journal Nature presents the worst-case scenario for runaway climate change that could leave the Earth entirely ice-free within a generation.
...
"Methane seeping from permafrost is something that's occurring," Kennedy said. "The challenge with it today is that we can't measure it, so we're just blithely ignoring it."
[/snip]
It just shows these climate change deniers have shit for brains. Can't they see the opportunity there could be for milking green technology? Of course they would need to learn a few new tricks, but I am sure even a transition period could be used to advantage: Using less oil? Sorry, that means the price has to go up.
Another excellent way to maximize CO2 emissions is to have wars. They're just wonderful for all sorts of things ranging from torture and bombing of innocents to innoculation of farmland with landmines to increasing the GDP by creating the opportunity to completely redesign cities.
Of course, nature with record-sized tornados and hurricanes isn't doing too badly in the redesigning of cities.
I search my mind in wonder at the scientific perfection that has been attained in this forum. We have glorious information at out fingertips to tell us in great detail how we are destroying the world for human habitation. Since these blogs are a cross section of the so-called erudite community and writers who make up the decision making wing of those that have been conditioned to find meaning by trying to think, I am amused with the petty squabbles undertaken here to prove that one has the intellectual rectitude to tell other fellows how to deal with crisis.
Having had a our say at the computer, well satisfied that our studious application of the accumulated data offered up here has been properly digested, showing our intellects to be above the fray we continue to defend our miniscule positions of rectitude, that allow cursing at others for some, impugning character for others, showing our Republican party credentials for some - we know that that brand is truly American-showing our professional credentials, engineering or letters offered in proper ego sneering mode, in some instances- a group brought together to speak to the problems of humanity facing disaster. How good, a blog -(definition- a collection of opinion based nonsense that lands right beside the point!) - as rarely seen in the annals human development.
Certainly a places of higher learning have produced great advances in species development but at the same time, based on the imperfect nature of thought a have allowed these advances and breakthroughs in science to turn those developments back on their creators. After a successful blog, the writers, having satisfied themselves with their contributions to the greater good, turn to the financial media to see whether their fortunes have gained significantly during their pursuit of ego gratification, so they may live out their days peacefully amused, as the remainder of the world suffers the agony of western invention and greed. As spoken from the White House, "let them eat cake" and may they choke, on it as their Asthma inhalers have lost their ability to forestall the wonders of air pollution.
I find my attention drawn to other thoughts when I read the bickering of whether the methane is spewing, leaking, puffing, or gaining greater more importance as it impacts on the climate change. I think of the institutions of science and the government led by a group of evil men and women from both parties, who in the pursuit of power, would care so little about humanity that the present leader "evildoer" would veto a bill to reduce the impact of work to limit emissions of the very gasses that would essentially destroy their children's lives. When one speaks of evil it cannot be greater than to directly affect the life of one's progeny, never mind the world where it will exist. Cold-blooded reptiles offer more protection and care for their offspring.
I have commented on previous science presented here on CD associated with climate change since this is my work. Many here echo many of my thoughts, as those above, associating GDP with CO2 but it must be recognized this condition is also associated with the laws of the USA, the governing establishment and the values of the culture which would vote for "Wall Street profit" above human survival. The places of higher learning and scientific development also teach successive generations value systems, the rule of law necessary for any society and should be discussing human purpose and meaning as it has developed over the eons of species advance.
Sadly, the most important survival mechanism which are associated with those ideas of higher levels in thought are absent in most current curriculums, or considered so abstract they rarely find their ways into the deliberations that are involved with the discussions surrounding, for example, the use of coal to power a culture or society (most of the so-called developed world). This however is appropriate if we consider that we use Jurassic energy conversion to continue the existence of Jurassic thinkers in the present day.
I am still suffering from "shock and awe" of the "Stern Report" commissioned by the UK for the "edification" of the global community, with regard to: the dangers of climate change to the world economy. Many of you remember the UK our partners in war, global hegemony, imperialism, lying to the electorate and also a great coal and oil burning culture. The economic report was trying to let the G8 economy down easily by accepting anywhere from three to five degrees of warming. It found that the economy could stand this amount of warming as inevitable but by acting immediately through a "cap in trade" philosophy the West could continue on its merry-way to greater consumption unabated. This philosophy is flawed from the outset by accepting pollution at all, particularly under this present circumstance of a ten-year window for survival.
It must be remembered that James Hansen has warned that western culture, now joined by the Chinese and Indians, has a TEN-YEAR window to radically shift its economic direction and choices of energy into a less Jurassically intense mentality. However, Hansen too thinks we have time to retool and believes we have until 2050 to make these changes. I have reminded him that less than five years ago we had until 2100 to make these changes. We have lost 50 years of that projection in two years. At the current rate of scientific perfectitude the forty-year time frame remaining may be down to the ten years, Hansen has predicted from the outset of his research. To his credit his measurement abilities have been enhanced by the Grace satellite- greater technology to deal with greater technological disaster.
I don't believe there is any "bickering", as you put it, about this ~IKE KAY. ___ Do you?
http://www.farnorthscience.com/2007/09/26
NASA has been so politicized one can never tell when they are telling the truth. In fact they have engaged in outlandish verfiable political activity since we jumped into the planetary science research scene. I remember when they scrambled to launch CFR-1275 (Investigation of research Misconduct) in late 2003 in order conceal their involvement in misconduct by Administration. Later on April 10, 2007 they pulled the ultimate disappearing act with the blessing of the House Science Committee. They destroyed all physical traces and records of an agency wide meeting which occurred on that date (for political reasons). They were afraid we were going to find out the details of the meeting but we got what we wanted within minutes of the meeting. They failed again.

Ike Kay - No, there is no bickering about this, we're all marching in mindless lockstep behind our resident expert on Methane: KEM PATRICK. Just don't mention any of the miriad other factors involved in the Global Warming crisis: Peak Oil, Peak Water, the death of the oceans and reefs, massive increase in the extermination of species, Overpopulation, Monoculture, Genetically Modified foods, etc.,etc.,etc....None of this matters because a huge methane explosion is going to destroy all life on Earth within a few months, or years, or decades, whatever. Nuclear war? Don't worry. Attack or Iran? Not important. Check out this link: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g/a/2008/06/04/notes060408.DTL but don't worry, KEM PATRICK has singlehandedly discovered the ultimate truth and anyone who disagrees must be a Neocon Troll, sent here by the oil companies to cast doubt upon his veracity. But I must go, have to get back to my "bank of computers", there is still so much work to do...
"KEM PATRICK June 3rd, 2008 12:20 pm
Yeah, and they have a dozen Global warming/Climate change denyers blogging comments here at Common Dreams who help them with their attempts to distort the truth. Misanthorpe and Lizard lead the pack."
I have never claimed to be an expert about global warming or methane gas ~Misanthorpe~. Those are charges you make about me. I just post links and agree with those authors on the subject. You disagree with them and just spew hated towards me and you have since you first posted a global warming blog here months ago denying methane gas was a serious problem and then you attacked me.
All of those other things you just listed are very important and I don't disagree that they are, no have I ever. The methane gas issue is the most importnt in my opinion, which is based upon the findings of qualified experts concerning it.
I also may disagree with others on subjects and others disagree with me and that is fine debatin gis fine, but when it turns to personal attacks like you initiate, I often respond in like manner.
If you don't wish to be classified as a Neo-Con troll, don't act like one. You have tried to discredit global warming many times and ~Lizard~ once posted 75 seperate blogs on one thread, denying global warming was valid.
Ike Kay - Thanks again for your very interesting post, there are many tangents of discussion that might be followed on, it's certainly food for thought. Unfortunately, having been a spectator upon the ever-advancing disintegration of the environment for the past 60 years, I don't have much hope that the inevitable disaster, in whatever form, that we all agree looms ahead of us, can be avoided.
Furthermore, I don't believe that blogging on a website, however popular or obscure, makes any difference at all except to satisfy our own personal needs to have our say before the maelstrom envelopes us. As we have seen throughout the world in the past several months, the effects of these profound changes in the natural world are magnified by the response of the human component of life on Earth. And, as you so eloquently point out, the reactions of the ruling elite surpasses the barbarity that we would expect from the great mass of people. The overall effect is to worsen the situation by many orders of magnitude.
As Josef Stalin said: "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions merely a statistic." I suppose it is unseemly for us to be bickering over the exact means and manner of our coming extinction. But, for myself, I must confess that I find it irresistible to continue to argue with profound stupidity and the bullying arrogance of the ignorant. It is, at least, an amusing distraction as we begin the death spiral into the ultimate entrophy.
~Misanthorpe, Billy__y4, JStevens and I disagree constantly about nuclear energy and we do it in a friendly manner. My personal friends Kathyodat and Paul Smith disagree on Obama and other issues. We don't attack one another. My wife and I disagree on issues and we love each other. You diagree with me and you hate me. You started the shit fight with me months ago and you now berate me for being the guilty one. ___ Peace pipe?
Okay Kem, if you're gracious enough to offer a peace pipe then I accept. Just stop slandering as a neocon troll or global warming denier and I will respond likewise. Thanks.
Okay, and I'm not a fool.
Well, sometimes I am.
You bring the tobacco, I only have Bugler.
