Congress May Question McClellan About Book
WASHINGTON - Former White House press secretary Scott McClellan, branded a "miserable creature" by former Sen. Bob Dole, could be headed for a congressional hearing examining his new book's account of Bush administration involvement in the disclosure of a CIA operative's identity.
House Judiciary Chairman John Conyers, D-Mich., said Friday he will talk to McClellan about the book's account of the possible White House cover-up of top aides' involvement in the leak of Valerie Plame's name.
Conyers said McClellan's revelations about the episode are "extremely troubling."
"I believe this issue may require closer examination, so I have instructed my counsels to begin discussions with Mr. McClellan to determine whether a hearing is necessary and to secure his possible cooperation," Conyers said.
Asked by CNN's Wolf Blitzer if he is willing to testify, McClellan said, "I'm glad to share my views," although he noted, "I think I made them very clear in the book."
McClellan wrote that former White House aides Karl Rove and I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby lied to him by saying they were not involved in the leak. McClellan also wrote that he was disturbed when President Bush acknowledged to him that he secretly declassified a portion of a National Intelligence Estimate so that Vice President Dick Cheney could see it. McClellan thinks information from that NIE was involved in the leak.
Plame is the wife of former Ambassador Joe Wilson, who was among the first to challenge the administration's rationale for the ouster of Saddam Hussein.
White House press secretary Dana Perino said the White House "hypothetically" could block a hearing appearance.
Perino also said White House lawyers routinely had reviewed the book before publication "for any possible classified information or any needs for executive privilege to be asserted."
"None of them were in this case," she said, adding, "So we've known for a little bit of time that this was coming."
Perino also said she "absolutely" has access to meetings and information she needs to do her job. McClellan says in his book that he often was kept out of the loop, rendering him unable to adequately inform the media and the public.
Dole's criticism of McClellan came in an e-mail to him.
"There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don't have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues," Dole told McClellan.
"No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique."
Perino said Friday that Bush has not read the book.
The Salt Lake Tribune, quoting attendees at a closed-door GOP fundraising event in Park City, Utah, on Wednesday night, said Bush told the audience he was disappointed by the book but would work to forgive McClellan. Bush said McClellan is "not the same guy" he has known for many years, according to the newspaper.

Show AllI think the rattlesnakes are starting to commit suicide.
Why would Congress even bother? Is there something that they'll understand from scrutinizing the book that they haven't been able to wrap their small minds around the past 7 years? So, they'll waste time an money on a hearing, then what? Impeach Bush? NO WAY will that happen. They just all want to wait till team bush is gone and they can all wipe their brow and say "Whew, glad that's over".
"Who gives a crap…the cowardly, greedy, corporate lackies won't do a thing…smoke and mirrors…dog and pony show…group masturbation!"
There are comments here that say that all the enablers should be impeached as well. So what do we do with the biggest enabler of them all, Apathy ?
Just for grins:

Does Conyers' failure to enforce subpoenas against all the Bush cronies strike anyone else as being cosmically and comically aligned with the old Monty Python "Sergeant Major" skit?
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Don't stand there gawping like you've never seen the Hand of God before! Now, today, we're going to do marching up and down the square! That is, unless any of you got anything better to do. Well?! Anyone got anything they'd rather be doing than marching up and down the square?! Yes?! Atkinson. What would you... rather be doing, Atkinson?
ATKINSON:
Well, to be quite honest, Sarge, I'd... rather be at home with the wife and kids.
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Would you, now?!
ATKINSON:
Yes, Sarge.
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Right! Off you go! Now, everybody else happy with my little plan... of marching up and down the square a bit?
COLES:
Sarge!
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Yes?!
COLES:
I've got a book I'd quite like to read.
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Right! You go read your book, then! Now! Everybody else... quite content to join in... with my little scheme of marching up and down the square?!
WYCLIF:
Sarge?
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Yes, Wyclif?! What is it?!
WYCLIF:
Well, I'm, uh, learning the piano.
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Learning the piano?!
WYCLIF:
Yes, Sarge.
SERGEANT MAJOR:
And I suppose you want to go and practise, eh? Marching up and down the square not good enough for you, eh?!
WYCLIF:
Well,--
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Right! Off you go!
WYCLIF:
Oh.
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Now! What about the rest of you? Rather be at the pictures, I suppose.
SQUAD:
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Ooh, yeah. Yeah. Right. Yeah. Right.
SERGEANT MAJOR:
All right! Off you go!
SQUAD:
Oh. Ooh. Great. That's great. What a day. I want to see the Merle Oberon picture. Eh hehheh.
SERGEANT MAJOR:
Bloody army! I don't know what it's coming to. Right! Sergeant Major, marching up and down the square. Left, right, left. Left...
Come Jan.20,2009, Bush will pardon all his scumbags, including himself.
Case closed. Sorry, Mister Duke: What democracy are you taking about?
Conyers is one of the sleepiest mofo's I have ever seen. The man's done absolutely nothing of import and has the energy of a snail on barbiturates. McClellan's book will be soon brushed aside because the media wants to cover its own ass for cheerleading for the war as well.
for Conyers and the rest of Dumbocrats who just now seem to be waking up to the sad facts and history of the last 7+ years.....a big fuckin' DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Too bad no one in the congress knows how to read.
Perino said "Bush hasn't read the book". What a surprise...he obviously doesn't read intelligence reports either, he just goes with what god is telling him to do. Scary....
In the last paragraph, Bush notes that he will work to forgive McClellan. We've seen Bush's work. It's shoddy, haphazzard, and rooted in belief rather than fact.

"I view it as a homage to a vanished past, in which the event of Congress turning its august and all-seeing eye upon irregular and questionable actions by another branch of government really was news, and portentous news at that."
ROFLMAO -- or, I would-be, if not old-enough to appreciate the sarcasm...(and, regret the stark-changes and corruption, since!).

Move.on is an organization that has been powerful in American politics. Its power equals the power of the conservative Christian churches that have supported the right wing agenda in the Republican Party.
Bill Clinton is very opposed to move.on now...While the orgnization was begun to stop the impeachment of Clinton it is really to the left of the Clinton agenda...and has been supporting Obama
(Sometimes I am suspicious of the posters who attack the Democratic Party. I think some may actually be Republicans who are here to depress the voting turn out for the Democratic Party)
In any case the funding for Obama has come from millions of small donations... so there are people who are willing to give money to get a change in the government.
It could be we will see more people from the Bush administration who come forward to tell the story of what happened. Some may be motivated by what will be written about them in the history books...Its pretty clear it is all unraveling...
And while some of us already knew how corrupt this administration was..its important that everyone realize what was going on...so that we have some unity in values.
If Ellsberg and Gravel had been smart they would have sold the Pentagon Papers as a book.
Theater of the Absurd!
I doubt there is anything in McClellan's revelations that Congress was not aware of or party to when it was happening.
We will need much more than a new face on the corporate hand puppet of the A.I. PACman behind this curtain.
You have to wonder how someone as dumb as GWB was able to pull the wool over the eyes of a spinmeister rat. Does that sound true? That they lied to the little poppet, and he was totally taken in?
Until blind "party loyalty" ceases to exist, there is no hope. Bush could bomb Iran, North Korea, and Jamaica and STILL party loyalists will fly their flags and tack ribbon magnets to their cars. This is an insane country in an insane time. The "team" mentality of the populace and the ills of the twp party fiasco will only keep alive the "constant campaigning", as McClellan said, mindset on life support and ISSUES will always be an afterthought. Bring on the revolution or your grandchildren will be inheriting the same shit and, probably, MUCH WORSE!
BOTTOM LINE: TAKE REAL ACTION or shut up and tread water.
Could he make some revelations to Congress that he could not put into print?
Bush is going to work to forgive him. The man is a saint.
Colleen,
I like your interpretation! It presupposes at least some good intentions on the part of McClellan and the publishers! That's what Common Dreams is about, that there are good and decent people out there, we need to keep getting together & working for positive change in any way we can.
So many people posting are so down, and sure there is good reason for that. But let us not lay down! There was once government sanctioned slavery & Jim Crow laws in this country. It wasn't the government nor just a few people that changed that, it was you guys, us, 'the masses', that changed things. The match is not over, we've just had a series of bad rounds, the final bell hasn't sounded. Yes, I get down too, but this site and the people who post give me some hope! There are people getting together tom make changes. One example is MoveOn.org. Yes I disagree with them on issues and candidates, but they organize and work together. People, if we had really lost all faith in each other, we wouldn't be on this site! No we do not act as Pollyanna's, we act as savvy, but good people who want positive change. It has been done, it can be done, it will be done again.
"A person may cause evil to others not only by his actions but by his inaction, and in either case he is justly accountable to them for the injury" - John Stuart Mill
Be upset, be outraged, yet remain undefeated and determined. We are not starving, we are not in a gulag. We have these forums we have the means of organizing and being heard. I've been around the world and I've lived a long time. We have in this the country the chance and the hope for greatness. We're a long way off, from that, but not as far away as we could be.
As said in one of Shakespeare's plays: "Once more into the breach, dear friends, once more.."
Peace Out

Prairedog:
That's a real intelligent comment you posted, and will do wonders to solving our problems. Thank you for that and I'm sure your candidate would appreciate reading what you said too!
Laugh! John Conyers is a purposeful whiner who never achieves anything important. Washington is a sad joke.
All the Democrats will do is stand around sucking each others dicks.
Want real change in America?
cindyforcongress.org.
This is just more cheap political theater by Democrats, Bush and Cheney won't be accountable for ZILCH and this too will die out.
Democrats are repulsive, I bet they'll have mattresses delivered to congress and pretend to "investigate" the matter into the wee hours of the night.
...Bush has not read the book.
That should read:
...Bush has never read a book.

A president who starts bombing Iran with nuclear weapons..and sends satellites into space armed with nuclear weapons...round ups of 10% of the US population placed into concentration camps
armed weapons used to shoot down demonstrators...
open and armed civil war in the US
Why does Congress have to question anybody? Don't they already know what McClellen said? If they don't then what the hell are they doing running the country?
Americans are being told by corporate media to shoot the messenger. To help us out, the media will turn Scott into an enemy.
Congress already knows the truth but is afraid to do their job. Doing their job, defending the Constitution, would get them in hot water with their supporters. Supporters being the people who finance, not vote. Congress helps the corporate media to marginalize McClellen by calling for hearings. What a farce!

There's definitely lemonade to be made out of this lemon. All of the sudden the criminal strategy for getting us into Iraq is high profile... higher in the MSM than it's ever been (of course because it's safe to hit the bully when he's down).
Who cares. This stuff needs to be aired out over and over until the the country, as a whole, comes out of its denial.
Meanwhile, McCain is sticking to his "Who cares how we got there?" mantra. The fact that this story has traction says "We do."
Whether or not congressional hearings are fruitful is less important than keeping this issue in the spotlight. The Republican Party is in disarray, however the Hillary-Obama show is giving them time to regroup and capitalize on perceived Dem weaknesses.
This story can be a knock out punch to the Republican for this election cycle.
As far as Scottie boy is concerned, I gotta say that if he is employing the old saw that 'revenge is a dish best served cold,' he couldn't have timed it better.
Seems the poor lad has taken offense at being used like a cheap whore.
Should have taken a better look at who he was getting into bed with in the first place.
"Conyers said McClellans revelations about the episode are 'extremely troubling'".
Did you enjoy your six year nap Conyers?
It's not just the Bush administration that needs impeachment, it's the entire system of enablers, the Congress, the corportate press. Impeach them all! Maybe the whole house of cards will just collapse anyway.
Howard Zinn's mantra "Governments Lie" is applicable to the Corporate Press.
I can't believe that people are BUYING McClellan's book. he is making a fortune off of us, at a time when he should be punished.
Yeah, its fun to read about the criminality of this admin, but the guy does not deserve to reap the rewards of his actions
EXACTLY!
I agree with poster 1...what is this hiding? this..."man" Scott M....is a FLUNKY...and TOO HAPPY ABOUT THIS...by a MILE...to be really.."exposing" anything...this is a think tank "management" program to defer legal troubles to some lesser crime..aka a crime that has already been through the mill...thus making the public...dumb as most of em are..think to themselves..'gosh...not this again..' and thusly...shut down their last little bit of 'reasoning' and consequently..miss out on the ACTUAL crime about to surface....mark my words..if yu want...there is another "revelation" coming soon..and they KNOW IT..this is a "burn em out early" flanking maneuver by the CORPORATE FASCIST THEOCRACY...TIRE EM OUT...BORE THEM..AND THEN GET AWAY WITH THE NEXT ONE..NOT THAT IT MATTERS...AS WWIII IS COMING IN THE FALL...WHEN THE "REPUBLICANS" WILL "ATTACK RUSSIA IN THE WINTER"...OR THE EQUIVELANT IN THIS CASE....IRAN...DUHHH..BUT WE'LL ALL BE FUCKED IN THE PROCESS...STOP PAYING FOR IT..STOP SENDING THESE SWINE YOUR MONEY...OR...DIE IN THE FALLOUT...CHOICE IS YOURS..YOU PAY FOR THE BOMBS.
It would be laughable how the complicit scoundrels expose themselves by their theatrical attacks on the messenger, were it not for their successful obfuscation of the message. Actually, I think it's quite fitting that an opportunist blow the whistle on his fellows! I'm sending the following 'Letter To The Editor' to my local newspaper. If anyone else would like, please feel free to copy and do the same.
ATTENTION: Letters To The Editor / Reader Comment / Opinion
Please consider the following for publication. It is a hot topic in our community and many of us would be grateful if you could help shed some light through your participation.
Suggested Title: Open Letter To Senator / Representative ___ Regarding the Scott McClellan allegations of White House Fraud
Dear Senator / Representative ___,
In recent years, there has been a steady flow of charges that our White House has defrauded the public in order to sell a war. If these allegations are true, the very survival of our democracy will be determined by our response. War, nor elections, nor any form of national emergency are acceptable excuses for delaying open, swift, and true action on this cancerous internal crisis. The thus far sheer volume and diverse sources of accusation, coupled with a disheartening lack of meaningful response by Congress, paints a pretty ugly picture. If it is not an accurate picture, please help us to understand why. If it is, please tell us what part you are actively playing and what is your timetable to deal once and for all with these allegations of White House fraud.
Thank you in advance for your timely attention to this critical issue. I am encouraging the newspapers in which this letter appears, to print your response.
Respectfully,
(My name)

"If you're not part of the solution…"
Mister Duke
Perhaps it is all theater. However, McClellan does claim Bush authorized Plame's leak.
If the Democratic leadership plays and times it correctly, this could be the in to bring him and his cabal down.
colleen. the word "worse" is really relative. can you elaborate?
Theatre.
Imo this is an attempt to weaken the Bush administration so that they can not begin a war in Iran.
Otherwise why publish the book now at this time?
I hope that others within the Bush administration will come forward and give further proof as whistle blowers about what went on in the Bush administration.
That the Bush admistration is unlawful must be clear to all ..so that an imperial prresidency is stopped.
There are actually worse leaders than Bush (I know thats hard to believe...but there are worse)
It's become an almost everyday occurrence to find Common Dreams news articles about the prospect of Congressional hearings on the latest (suddenly) noteworthy transgression of law and human rights (and decency) by the utterly depraved, corrupt, and malign maladministration.
I'm not faulting CD for passing on the news. I view it as a homage to a vanished past, in which the event of Congress turning its august and all-seeing eye upon irregular and questionable actions by another branch of government really was news, and portentous news at that.
In the Before-Time, a breeze bearing news of congressional investigations into potentially scandalous government wrongdoing, apart from evidencing the salutary operation of the tripartite checks-and-balances system of government implemented by the Founders, caused heads of every class and stripe of society to lift from other preoccupations to wonder what was afoot.
So I commend CD's commitment to tradition, and its willingness to evoke nostalgia in its more mature readership.
In this century, however-- and especially since 2006, when the sly Democratic Party ran a soft scam on We the People and hinted that electing Democrats would put aggressive pit bulls into committee chairmanships to begin the long indictment and prosecution of the multifarious crimes and depredations of the Bush crime syndicate-- congressional investigations evoke the image of a toothless and clawless cat pawing away ineffectually at a pack of rabid wolverines.
The fact that the toothless and clawless cats are by and large also rabid wolverines in cats' clothing is worth noting.
I suppose I'll close with the tired sarcasm I ritually add to this news topic: Somebody better watch out, or they may find themselves on the receiving end of a really Sternly-Worded Letter!
