Desperate GOP Misfires at Obama's Wife
Republicans apparently have decided that Barack Obama's wife, Michelle, is fair game for their slurs.
They've turned a quote from a speech where she expresses her pride in America for the outpouring of youthful participation and idealism that has been unleashed by the Obama campaign and turned it into an insult to America. The Tennessee Republican Party cut a Web ad to greet Obama, suggesting that while Michelle Obama wasn't proud of America, Tennessee Republicans were. On Fox, Bill O'Reilly offered his smarmy smear, saying that this was a "big deal." The McCain campaign had Cindy McCain weigh in, saying that she has always been proud of America, unlike some others.
For African Americans, love for the country preceded pride in the country. It took martyrs, marches and a will to put dignity over disdain to create an America where we share more equality under the law -- the right to vote, open housing, more access to quality education . . . pride.
Now that we can vote together and for each other -- in big numbers -- we have whites voting for a black, and men voting for a woman. That's new!
Michelle Obama is watching her husband be the conduit for a new, mature, more caring America -- the America that the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamed about but never experienced. He saw this America, perhaps beyond the mountaintop. Michelle Obama and this generation are now experiencing it. It is new and beautiful, a substantial basis to feel proud and accepted for the first time.
Have they no shame?
Michelle Obama grew up as Michelle Robinson on Chicago's South Side. At Whitney Young High School, a magnet public school, Michelle Obama and my oldest daughter, Santita, became tight friends. Michelle came from a loving, two-parent family. Her mother stayed at home and ensured that her two children survived the mean streets. Her formidable father had contracted multiple sclerosis at 21. Despite constant pain, he got up every morning and went to work at the city's Water Department. He set high standards for his children.
Her older brother, a gifted athlete and student, made his way to Princeton on scholarship. What came easy to him was harder for Michelle, but she worked harder and kept going. She followed him to Princeton, graduated with departmental honors, and then went on to Harvard Law School. On the partnership track of the blue-chip Chicago law firm Sidley and Austin, she decided, soon after her father passed away, that she wanted more from her life than copyright law -- so she took a deep pay cut to move into public service.
Like her mother and father, Michelle Obama's first priority is her two daughters. She doesn't like to stay away more than one night at a time. She insists her husband come back for parent-student conferences and ballet recitals.
On the campaign trail, she delights audiences because she isn't packaged. She doesn't like to be scripted. She has an edgy humor, often blunt speech. Barack Obama calls her his "rock;" she says she's just concerned about "keeping it real."
She is an American success story. And it isn't surprising that she feels new pride in America in this political season. She was born when blacks were still struggling for their civil rights. She grew up amid the struggles of Chicago's South Side. She made her way in elite white schools, suffering the slights, felt the insecurities. It didn't make her bitter; it made her better. And now she sees people in large numbers rallying to the historic candidacies of her husband and Hillary Clinton. Who doesn't feel new pride in this country?
American politics ain't beanbag. It has always been an alley fight, from the earliest days of the republic. But there has usually been a zone of privacy for candidates' families. This year, however, it is clear that Republicans are truly desperate. Their failures in office have been calamitous. They have nothing to offer but more of the same. Unable to run on their record or their ideas, they have little choice but to make the election into a mud brawl.
As the Democratic nominee, Obama should expect that. They'll go to great lengths to turn him from an idealistic leader seeking to bring America together into a black nationalist alien who hates America. He'll have to figure out how to deal with the slurs.
But smearing Michelle Obama isn't hardball, it's despicable. If Republicans want a character argument, fine. But they'd better stick with Barack. Because Michelle Obama is way out of their league.

Peace and harmony are states of mind which may be accessed with a decision and just a little willingness to re-examine life.

Michelle would make a lovely first lady. She is attractive, she is intelligent and she is not afraid to speak her mind when necessary. She would be a grand
representative of our country on the world stage, which is
truly in need of someone with her qualifications. Somehow Cindy McCain doesn't appear to be anything more than a pretty sideshow and that won't play well on the international scene. Michelle has youth, she has energy and she brings with her a lovely family. Best wishes, Michelle.
I personally think she is more qualified to be the President ! She is real for sure and highly educated and has a no nonsense air about her thats refreshing, and left to her she wont take shit from the low-life repukes.
Michelle Obama is a wonderful role model. She is influential because she is so admired. She doesn't have to (nor would she) play the political games that others do. She doesn't need to. She (and Barack) will bring honor back to our country.
As much as I'm uplifted by Barack's speeches -- what eloquence! -- I get just as much enjoyment from listening to Michelle. She's so smart and real, and has a great sense of humor.
As to Cindy McCain, am I the only one who sees a Stepford aura around her?
Michelle Obama would INDEED make an excellent First Lady in the White House. I'm not yet sure about her husband - I still say he needs another eight years of experience and toughening, but she's ready. Unlike annabelle, I don't think her being "attractive" is a qualification (my god what if she were UGLY? what would you say then?) but I've heard her talk on many occasions (thanks c-span) and she gets my vote for her intelligence, articulation, and honesty.
As for Cindy McCain - who wants to go with me on bumper stickers: "From Other Woman To First Lady - CINDY MCCAIN!"
Oh and Jesse? You failed to quote the source for your last 3 lines - they're ripped off from the film "The American President."
Get a job.
Juliann, Looks certainly are not in the qualifications for first lady...My opinion is that Elanor R. was probably the most influential First Lady we have ever seen, admired and respected and it had nothing to do with looks. So, I have to agree with you 100% and am glad that you brought it up.
I am an Obama and Michelle supporter, but from reading about Cindy McCain, there is much more to her than meets the eye. Her serious charity work, her taking over her father's business and making it even more of a success when it was expected that she would sell it off when he died.
If John McCain is truly as fierce and volatile as has been reported, then Cindy is doing something that I am very familiar with. If she has to walk on eggshells around her husband for fear of setting off his volatile temper, that would easily explain her public persona. If anyone has been in a relationship with someone like that, you sort of make yourself small, like a blank-faced helpmate who follows the script and you don't deviate, because you never from what quarter an attack will come next. You sort of lose yourself in the process, thus the Stepford quality. It's about self-preservation. I could well imagine that is what's wrong with Cindy.
I basically agree with Jesse Jackson with this one, but I wish he'd actually provided the quote from Michelle Obama that's the cornerstone for this article.
Jesse, not everyone reading your article is aware of this quote. And they're not all psychic, either.
Actually, there were two similar quotes from her that started this whole thing, as far as I know:
"For the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback."
"For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country, and not just because Barack has done well, but because I think people are hungry for change."
Personally I would rather be able to vote for Michele that her husband, but .....
This article is kinda pointless, I mean really Jessey, what are you gonna do about it? What is anyone?
Jessy asks the rhetorical question "Have they no shame?" Duh.... Of course the don't, and jsut what did you expect from the likes of Bill Reilly? the guy is a worthless piece of garbage. As for Cindy McCain, come on, if the McCains had any self respect they would not be brown nosing the Bushes so shamelessly.
So quit with the rhetoric Jessey, make them pay. Call Cindy McCain out, challenge her for the privileged class load on society that she is.. Embarrass O'Reily in public the way Al Franken did and post the video on youtube. Put some bark behind your bite or shut up.
Sad to say, sleaze works. From Willie Horton to "Swift boating," the Republicans have mastered the game. Do this to an African American candidate, and racist American society will more than take notice, they will make John McCain the next president.
Jesse Jackson and Barack Obama need to lighten up a tad. They're taking some typical silliness from the Republican noise machine and conflating it into a personal attack on Barack through an assault on his wife. A Boston Globe columnist puts it in the right context: that, since Obama sends her around the country to campaign for him, she is "fair game" to criticism just as he is...however stupid and irrelevant the criticism might be, hey, that's campaigning USA (he said proudly). The foolish imbroglio over her "proud of America" remark is of a piece with other "distractions" centered on flag pins etc. that, as Bruce Dixon has said, are convenient to the "legend" propagated by the Obama campaign of his victimization because he is black, when in fact the shitty treatment he gets is what any candidate, unfortunately, gets in American campaigns in which important public issues are regularly evaded in favor of stuff that belongs on Fox News and the gossip columns. Jesse Jackson I thought seriously cared about the condition of black Americans and what political candidates would do about that condition, but this article brings him down to the "woe-is-us" level of whimpering about maltreatment that will never contribute to any kind of pride, American, black of otherwise.

How can we be proud with Bush as our president and Cheney pulling his strings?
Go to a foreign country and "proudly" tell the citizens there your're an American. Who respects us now?
I love how everyone tries to portray the Obamas as having lived tough black lives and having made all sorts of amazing personal sacrifices.
Michelle Obama grew up in the South Shore neighborhood of Chicago, a former opulent neighborhood it never declined to the state of "mean streets", as Jackson describes it.
As for her career, Jackson claims she took a "deep pay cut" to enter "public service". Sounds altruistic until you find out that she was an assistant to the Mayor, an assistant commissioner, and then an executive director of a city programs department. Let's not mistake her for Mother Teresa, people. Now she works for the University of Chicago Hospitals, first as an executive director and now as a VP. She was a SALARIED board member of a food company that is a supplier to Wal-Mart until she quit after her husband's gaffe, his criticism of Wal-Mart. Her 2006 income was $273,618.
I'm not saying anything is wrong with this, good for her for having a good career and a nice paycheck. But Jackson needs to cut out the BS and stop portraying all blacks as down-and-out-turned-success miracles. It's a form of racism !
"As for her career, Jackson claims she took a 'deep pay cut' to enter 'public service'."
As for his career, instead of signing up with some high paying law firm after university, Barack took his 'deep pay cut' as an activist. The pay off was a 1.3 million dollar mansion in the Hyde Park area.
TRULY a down-and-out-turned-success miracle! How did they ever manage to do that?
Only a neocon would think that a silver-spoon trust fund brat, adulterous daughter of a beer baron, who looks like Tammy Faye Bakker's anorexic twin and has probably made her Mary Kaye Lady very wealthy compares favorably to the intelligent, accomplished, thoughtful and charming Michelle Obama. The GOP is fond of smearing people (Democrats with mud, their own with makeup), but it's going to backfire.
"ANWONG" it won't work this time.....more and more people SEE RIGHT THRU john mccain..HE'S PAPER THIN ON EVERY ISSUE...INCLUDING NATIONAL SECURITY.....it's called the republican playbook and it's getting a little stale now...ALL THEY (republicans) HAVE IS DISTRACTION POLITICS
I remember it wasn't so long ago that you supported Hillary. I can't wait for you "progressives" to turn the same way on michelle obama.
mairs -- "If she has to walk on eggshells around her husband for fear of setting off his volatile temper, that would easily explain her public persona."
mairs what you just described is a domestic violence situation and hopefully you got out of that.
atheist -- "I love how everyone tries to portray the Obamas as having lived tough black lives and having made all sorts of amazing personal sacrifices."
Yup thats right ... i mean living on food stamps when you are a kid is good enough ... especially if you are black .. i mean damn ... what more do they want ? .. at least they have food stamps right.
You sound eerily like Barbara Bush the Senior.
gyptian, who lived on food stamps ? Certainly neither Michelle nor Barack Obama. It's nice that they are both successful and rich, good for them. But to ghetto-fy their backgrounds in order to make them more amazing is simply ludicrous ... and it's racist too. Why can't we have middle class or upper class blacks in this country ? Why must all blacks be demoted to ghetto ? I suspect that Jackson is trying to prove to other blacks that the Obamas are *just like them*. You know, plain folk, hard times (but good times !), "her clothes are old, but never are they dirty ..."
I call BS on this BS. Michelle's upbringing was like mine. Her streets were no more mean than mine were. The only difference between us, aside from color, is that she picked a more financially lucrative career.
Regarding the food stamps comment, I see that gyptian fell for the BS. The real story comes from Obama's own mouth via a Time interview: "I had to reconcile a lot of different threads growing up—race, class," ... "For example, I was going to a fancy prep school, and my mother was on food stamps while she was getting her Ph.D."

I just watched a documentary on the weather channel yeterday about the politics behind the relief efforts following the Mississippi river flood of 1927. The Greenville, Mississippi delta was suddenly massively flooded when swollen river water overwhelmed the levees. The black sharecroppers were intentionally left behind and stranded on the remaining levies in a goverment/land owner agreement to keep them in the area so sharecropping could continue as before when the water receded. The National guard was brought in to keep the flood victims from leaving the levees because it was feared that once the sharcroppers left the area, they might not return to be exploited by land owners. Not only were they kept there under guard, but were forced to rebuild the levees and distribute regional relief supplies as slaves would. They were fed lesser quality food than white flood victims and suffered more misery when the dead fish from the river began to rot right under their noses. Jim Crow laws were at work as well. Proud of this American history? Obviously not,if you love the better ideals on which it was founded but is just now starting to realize. Have you read about this piece of history? It must have been hard to be proud of the goverment as a stranded black share cropper in Greenville, Mississippi in 1927. It is easier to be proud if you haven't been made aware of this very real history. If you haven't lived it. I'm glad Michelle Obama said what she said. This is a history lesson we haven't been wanting to address and now maybe we will.
I put it all down to overwhelming fear of Camelot II.
I love how Jackson deals a disguised insult to Michelle Obama ... "Her older brother, a gifted athlete and student, made his way to Princeton on scholarship. What came easy to him was harder for Michelle, but she worked harder and kept going."
In other words, she wasn't that great of a student. But damn she was as a hard worker !
"... to walk to school she's got to get up early, her clothes are old but never are they dirty, living just enough, just enough for the citaaaaaaaaaaaay ..."
