GM Crop Foes March In Germany As UN Summit Starts
BERLIN - About 5,000 activists marched through the German city of Bonn on Monday to protest against genetically modified food at the start of a U.N. conference to discuss risks linked to the technology.Campaigners, many waving colorful flags and banners with slogans such as "Biofuel Creates Hunger" and "Good Food Instead Of GM Food", walked and danced through the western German city. Some drove tractors and floats.
"We are protesting for biodiversity and against the destruction of nature, against GM, for the protection of biodiversity," activist Amira Busch told Reuters Television.About 2,000 government and non-governmental officials will attend the five-day U.N. conference in Bonn to discuss global protection measures for the transfer of genetically modified plants, including rice and soya. The issue has become particularly sensitive due to a recent surge in food prices which has sparked anger and protests in some developing countries.
The experts will try to agree on ways to help implement a U.N. agreement on the trading of living genetically modified organisms called the Cartagena protocol.
In Europe, consumers are fairly skeptical about GM crops but the biotech industry says its products are as safe as non-GM equivalents.
The conference, which starts on Monday, precedes a bigger summit next week on biodiversity in Bonn where some 4,000 international experts and government ministers will try to agree on ways to slow the rate of extinctions.
"We want biodiversity to be part of humanity's wealth and a precondition to overcome hunger," said Greens EU lawmaker Friedrich-Wilhelm Graefe zu Baringdorf who was on the march.
"We demand that all other activities, which probably boost industry's profits, do not endanger food security for future generations," he told Reuters Television.

Show AllFor David_78 (apologies for being a crap poet and the touches of plagiarism, but then again, you're no bard yourself)
Here comes the parade of the uninformed
They advocate a technologies without the slightest clue of how it is carried out
When confronted to show independent human feeding studies
The burden of proof they doth flip
Scaremonger! Fearmonger! Is their cry
Yet we don't fail to perceive
That the independent, peer-reviewed, placebo-controlled, double-blind studies are nowhere to be seen!
They call opponents ignorant
But yet when asked, "What was the method developed for inserting transgenes in to monocotyledons with cell walls that would resist the Agrobacterium method of transgene insertion?"
They always reply "..."
Seriously though...
I am a crap poet. And where are those studies? And, oh, David, why was it that Event CZW-3 squash was found to have 67.6 times less beta carotene than its non-GMO parent when there was no addition or removal of genetic material to make this happen, even though mainstream theory says this should not happen? Time to prove you aren't "ignorant."
One of my biggest fears is for future generations that are left to deal with the aftermath of GM food and what havoc they can reak on our food diversity. Another thing that our children's children will shake their heads bout and wonder what the heck we were thinking messing with something we have no business messing with.
After reading this, I'm glad my Community Supported Agriculture food box starts arriving next week. Nothing beats locally grown, organic produce. Especially since I'm supporting open pollentated seed suppliers and farmers instead of big ag.
Don't worry. If things get too bad and we have to forage with a steel tube and suck the juice out of the bellies of rats (It happened in China a few decades back) we will be saved by our hero friggin' army. They will go around killing and blowing things up. That will make it ALL BETTER.
At least we will be 'free' and the flag will wave forever for millions of starving Americans. Whoopee!
sounds like WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRUCTION to me
Just a note of clarification--My analysis above is not meant to be advocacy for such destruction. It is, rather, an observation of what is on the way if "we the people" don't compel such idiocy to stop by more peaceful means.
David,
Genetic modifications are being made to allow the Corpo-Farmer to pour MORE pesticides and herbicides on our crops. Those chemicals then enter OUR bodies when we dine on the sh@t in the grocery store.
As a plus, having trade-marked seeds means we get to pay more for the privilege of eating.
So Dave, why exactly do you think putting PROFITS BEFORE PEOPLE is such a good idea??? Where you working, pal?
May the revolution be as swift as it is peaceful.
GM Free regions the answer:
"At least 174 regions, over 4500 municipalities and other local entities and tens of thousands of farmers and food producers in Europe have declared themselves "GMO-free" expressing their commitment not to allow the use of genetically modified organisms in the agriculture and food in their territories."

Poetry about theft of biodiversity? Cool.
Irish potato famine redux
With profit as the goal
Seems like it kind of sux
Digging us a big deep hole
But we got to buy Monsanto's seeds
Or else we'll be tossed in gaol
Or we can all just eat weeds
Not too filling, but food for the soul
Let people go hungry, left and right
Cuz we got to feed our cars
So we can drive all day and night
And watch the poor gosh-darned starve
Chorus:
Monsanto, Monsanto
Makin' lots of bucks
Monsanto, Monsanto
Rollin' in the dough
Monsanto, Monsanto
The poor dyin' real slow
Monsanto, Monsanto
We're all outta lucks
Inventin' food, like they was God
Patent on it and everything
Magic seeds, under the sod
Money, of thee they sing
One kind of seed to rule them all
One kind of seed to cash in on
One kind of seed will never fall (yeah, right)
One kind of seed to swing the con
(repeat chorus)
Who needs food when we can drive?
Who needs grain when we've got beef?
Eatin' don't keep them poor alive
Monsanto, you rock, you goshdarned thief
Chicory, chicory, chicory dock
Dandelion greens and cattail stalks
Fiddleheads and mushrooms, around the clock
That's what we gots
Of wheat and corn, we're shite outta luck
(repeat chorus again, just for the heck of it)
And so on. . .
It's time to stop arguing with fools who promote GMO's.
Best selling anti-GM food author Jefrey Smith predicts we can stop it: "Now remember, the food industry gains nothing from these GM crops, in about 80% are herbicide tolerant and about 20%produce their own pesticide. They do not have consumer benefits, so the food industry gains nothing from using GM, and if they saw a drop in market share of just a few percentage points and they perceived a trend that might grow over time, it is very easy to see how the stampede away from GM could be repeated in the United States as it was in Europe. I am predicting that with as little as 5% of the US consumers avoiding GM ingredients very consciously, that 15 million people could drive the decisions for the entire food industry. So where can we get 15 million people? Well, certainly health conscious shoppers are low-hanging fruit since there are already 28 million people who buy organic food on a regular basis, but they rarely avoid GM ingredients in their non-organic purchases. I'm working with some CEOs of major food companies in the natural food industry, and what we are doing is we are cleaning out any remaining GM ingredients from the entire natural food sector, setting up GMO information centers in all the health food stores, non-GMO shopping guides, and later on, in-store, on-shelf labeling of any products that have held out and not participated in the clean-up."

You are the ignorant one. The biotech industry and their little shrills are the fascists.
There is so much scientific research to show that GM crops yield less and are harmful to human health and the environment, your stupid little ditty "Here comes the parade of the uninformed" is laughable and ludicrous.

Interesting and very informative, if true anyway, and I think it is, are very specifically related articles by F. William Engdahl and an extensive review of his book by Stephen Lendman. If what it all says is not true, then I still think most of it is, while the rest is about things to learn to be wary for or of; like "watchers" or alert people who also act when there are serious issues.
The book is the title of the article by Lendman, which is part 1 of the 3-part series and the other links are available via his author's index at GR.

Actually, I won't link the others, for they can be found via the "Biotechnology and GMO" index linked in the column of links on the left-top of the webpage. I hadn't visited that index before and it seems impressive enough.

I'll go along with forbidding the patenting of seeds, or of anything that results in a living organism. Nobody invented life; being able to patent it is ludicrous.
Oh, BTW....Monsanto, who started out in the chemical business, provided us with agent orange, among other devastating contaminants yet to be cleaned from the earth.
If my instincts serve me, I would be mighty leery of trusting them with the planet's food supply.
On an individual level, we protect ourselves by buying and growing organic foods. On a national level, the courts need to forbid patents on seeds. And Monsanto should be sued for damages inflicted on just about everything it touches.
David, and those who share your views, you may want to be better informed of the dangers of GM 'foods':

Plant an organic garden now.
Poet rock on..
To prevent contamination of other varieties, we require that the capitalist mutate the GM variety into its own unique species that is unable to fertilize any variety of the original species.
And besides marching in the streets, activists may help to spread the word around the world about the importance of maintaining species and food security. We need a large number of people to be involved in this.
Ragdoll, yes and the cavendish banana is about the least nutritious fruit out there. The plantain or macho banana is a more nutritious alternative - try latino markets. Unfortunately they are also marketed by the industrial giants. Try pawpaws in northern climates - these bananas come to you by nature's path.
Poet: I'd be careful my friend. Don't think that these boards aren't being watched... we all know free speech is now bullshit... along with the anonymity of the internet.
Poet: You said it well! Great thoughts!
Trusting something as vital as the food supply to something as evil as a corporation is a recipe for disaster...
small farmers do agriculture in such a way as to produce higher yields than corporate agrobusiness, and they do it organically- no need for pesticides or fertilizers. Monsanto, Cargill and other gm seed merchants got the world bank to impose gm seeds on Indian farmers. they could no longer keep an plant their seeds. buying gm seeds impoverished many, and gms can't be saved and planted cause they are engineered not to and also "patented" and gm crops demand monsanto pesticides and commercial fertilizer. this started 10 years ago. as a direct result of these artificially imposed artificial farming policies
30,000 Indian farmers have been driven to suicide. now their families and friends and other well informed people do indeed hate gm, and to, and world bank, and global capitalism. driving small farmers to suicide is not the way to have a sustainable food supply. actually it could even be called idiotic.

"Seriously though..."???
Threatening Darwin's wrath in reference to genetically modified food couldn't be more of an oxymoron!
Labeling those who are critical as ignorant, yet there isn't a single GM scientist that can predict the future that will evolve by introducing these plants into the ecosystem.
Threatening famine and hunger, yet these companies force feed us plants that don't propagate.
I think there is plenty of justification in being skeptical of these foods. Has it not been proven time and time again that the public has been hood-winked when it comes to our health and environment?
If you ask me, the ignorant are the ones who don't question and just consume.
Seriously though ...
An approach to GM foods based on facts and care is great.
An approach based on fanaticism, lies, and superstitions is not.
Yeah :)
Ahhhh David, if we could only be as informed, smart, loving, calm, peaceful, calming, wise, intelligent and brilliant as yourself.
Here comes the parade of the uninformed
Incited by others equally dumb
They hate GM foods with a passion and furor
They advocate terror and burning and hate
Frankenfood ... a word used to scare
But had any of them bothered to read Frankenstein
They would know that the book's 'Monster' was the hero
And the true evil was the incited mob of the uninformed
So go ahead and revel in your ignorance
Spread your stupidity far and wide
Darwin will return to smite you with hunger
And then there will be fewer idiots in the world.
The time for marching, protesting, petitions, and other polite dissent is long past. The time for torch carrying mobs destroying fields, lab facilities, offices, and anything with the names of Monsanto, ADM, or Cargill connected with it (including especially law and private security firms and recipients of political campaign donations) will soon arrive.
You think this sounds crazy? Just wait till there is either no food or insufficient money to purchase what is available. Desperate people do crazy things and we may not have too long to wait for a ring-side seat to this reality.
Wait until Monsanto and cohorts start trading seeds on the stock market with prices shooting up just like oil. Recall that people who buy GM seeds are forbidden or else unable because of the nature of the seeds to collect some of them to replant for the next season, the old way that farmers have done for centuries! They must go back to the GM seed vendor each season or revert to non-GM varieties provided seeds are still available for those either from the farmer's own stocks or from vendors of non-GM seeds.
With climate change now an evidence, it is more important that ever to preserve as much of our natural stocks of non-GM seeds as possible, to be better equipped to adapt to the chain of climate related events that lie before us, water resources, bird, insect and animal migrations or natural mutations.
If i'm not mistaken there is now in the world only one type of commercialized banana, the Cavendish. Imagine if a change in climate renders it impossible to cultivate the Cavendish, we're out of bananas!
