After the mainstream media's weeks of obsession with Rev. Wright, some of which continued even after Senator Obama denounced him in no unequivocal terms, many bloggers and activists seem to have succeeded in getting the media to again do what it is supposed to do: cover the issues that matter most to people.
If we were to judge the media based on an idealistic set of standards, we're likely to conclude that the Rev. Wright story maybe should never have gotten as much attention as it did because what one's pastor says is neither representative of one's beliefs nor grounds for one to leave a church community he's been a member of. Based on that standard, the media certainly failed miserably.
But the media has also failed based on its own standards. If news programs and Blitzers of the American media find it relevant to obsess about some of the past comments of a presidential candidate's former pastor, should they not apply that standard to all the candidates?
There has been little talk in the mainstream media about Rev. Hagee's remarks that New Orleans got what it deserved through Hurricane Katrina because of gays or "its level of sins" in general. John McCain actively sought the endorsement of Rev. Hagee.
But Brave New Films has now made available the video of Pastor Rod Parsley, another pastor admired by John McCain whose firebrand and incendiary comments insult Islam. One may wonder what makes John McCain's association with Rev. Parsley, and calling him, among other things, one of the "truly great leaders in America," "moral compass" and "spiritual guide" relevant. Pastor Parsley has called Islam "an anti-Christ religion that intends, through violence, to conquer the world," declared that "America was founded, in part, with the intention of seeing this false religion [Islam] destroyed" and expressed the view that "I believe our nation can't truly fulfill its divine purpose until we understand our historic conflict with Islam."
In light of these incendiary and extreme comments, it is both incredible and tragic to see the media apply such a double standard to the controversial comments of two different pastors. The media is not in the position to decide insults against what group of people is justified and against what group of people controversial and bombastic.
One may be inclined to say that Rev. Wright's comments offended more people because he criticized Israel which may be likely to offend many Jews. First of all, criticizing Israel has nothing to do with ones' opinion of the Jews, despite what those who want to suppress conversation about Israel say. Israel is a democratic state and can be a legitimate subject of criticism for its policies like the United States or any other state. Secondly, when it comes to insulting a minority group, the number of people in that group should not be the sole factor in deciding how much to cover a story that insults that minority group.
But a more important fact to keep in mind is that as Haveford College Professor Harvey Glickman demonstrated in a presentation last year, there are now more Muslims in America than there are Jews. So what message is the media sending to these Muslims when we tell them that if Israel is criticized, the media will go nuts, but if Islam is insulted - even in much more derogatory and bigoted terms - the Muslims have to take it and the media's deafening silence on the insults. This is the kind of behavior that leads to the alienation of the biggest non-Christian minority group in the United States, damages our image in Muslim countries and plays into the anti-Semitic canards that Jews control the Western media.
News corporations may have a preference among religions, but that preference is not going unnoticed by millions in this country. The bloggers have to do what they can to force the media to cover the outrageous comments of Rev. Parsley, because when it comes to controversial pastors, they should not be only democrats' liability in this election.

Show AllIt is quite simple why the corporate media have been relatively silent about McCain's pastors: they are WASP's (White Anglo-Saxon Protestants). It is a WASP elite whom control the corporations that own the mass media, not the old lie of a cabal of jews (though they help that lie spread as disinformation as jews have been history's favorite scapegoats). So unless McCain's pastors spew on live television or on YouTube, the silence will continue.
Great, keep pasting those awful media with their own scummy lies. Demand equal air time to attack every pro war, anti islam, foaming at the mouth, white supremacy freak. Freedom of speech and democrazy demand right of reply, all serious allegations and arguments put in to context and redressed. You should be marching, not to demand so much the downfall of those paid politicians, but the heads and CEOs of all major media corporations.
Down with Murdoch! Strip and break up his empire. Down with those inflammatory blow-em to bits war monger talk show hosts. Equal time for the opposition, or no time at all for the right bastards and kick them all out on to the unemployment queues.
Since media seems to be the arena of public opinion, and public opinion is supposed to represent democrazy, how about some plain, in your face, representation control by the public, for the public, in all the media. Points of view and outright lies, which go unanswered and unrefuted on prime radio and television is called tyranny, not democrazy. March now and overthrow your local radio and TV hacks. Broadcast your own discussions and points of view. Down with corporate media ownership! Toss Murdoch and his ilk and there pernicious lie machines away!
And where is that blond lobbiest woman all McCain's staff thought he was boning when he was doing her bidding?
If Hagee and Parsley were living in Germany in the 1930's they would back Hitler and the Nazi party and what these church, lunatics represent is the religious Reich.
Israel is a Jewish state in which every Jew has a birthright. A claim to land on the Mediterranean is a valuable asset, and Jews claim it comes to them directly from God. They also believe that God intends them to defend their right with military force. Try to find criticism in the embedded mass media of this sort of religious fanaticism.
Someone should remiond Hagee that gluttoney is a mortal sin, that fat little bitch...I bet he is a queer as a 3 dolar bill to boot.
Treaty of Tripoli
The Treaty of Tripoli usually refers to the first treaty concluded between the United States of America and Tripoli, otherwise known in English as the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between the United States of America and the Bey and Subjects of Tripoli of Barbary. The treaty was signed at Tripoli on November 4, 1796 and at Algiers (for a third-party witness) on January 3, 1797, finally receiving ratification from the U.S. Senate on June 7, 1797 and signed by President John Adams on June 10, 1797.
Article 11 reads:
Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion; as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquility, of Mussulmen; and, as the said States never entered into any war, or act of hostility against any Mahometan nation, it is declared by the parties, that no pretext arising from religious opinions, shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries.
This says that the U.S. is and has been a secular state. Treaties are the supreme (Constitutional) Law of the Land, we are all bound by them.
Wow! A so-called Christian, spews hate and distrust, condones violence and the Jews are brought to blame! Where is the logic?
I suppose with freedom of speech we have the right to vomit prejudice against any group,
according the view of one, to the whole group. However, if you disagree with hate and prejudice you must guard your words as to not perpetuate more of the same.
Cangrande, saying Jews don't control media is just dishonest. Of course they do. They will usually admit as much. Hollywood was started by three Jewish gentlemen. If you have ever worked in media (TV, film, publishing, music) you would know this.
You make some incorrect statements as well.
Rupert Murdoch's mother was Jewish. That's good enough for Israeli citizenship.
Sumner Redstone (Sumner Murray Rothstein) is Jewish and runs Viacom. He also sits on CBS's board.
I suggest you read a previous article here on Big Media and check out who runs these 6 major conglomerates that control 99% of everthing we read, watch or hear.
Senator Obama denounced him in no unequivocal terms
__________________________________
Indeed, hypocrisy and double standards are well-worn tools of the corporate media.
But I think an editor should do something about the phrase "no unequivocal terms". Think about it.
As Jon Stewart pointed out in a recent "Daily Show", Billy Graham's highly antisemitic remarks didn't damage Nixon.
The race of the guy who utters such lines seems to be an issue after all..
Hagee and Parsley preach a message which ultimately calls for my own extermination and the extermination of my children and grandchildren. I am horrified that this brutal blood-thirsty genocidal ranting continues without dragging these peddlers of hate and murder to court because of their instigation of high crimes against innocent human beings - including their fellow citizens.
There is no way one can compare the calls made by Parsley and Hagee to slaughter innocent human beings, including babies, children and the elderly (Muslims come in all shapes and sizes), with the well reasoned, if radical, analyses of Rev.Zeremiah Wright.
Hagee and Parsley get a free pass to the White House because they preach murder and hatred, while Wright is excoriated because he (in his words) is 'descriptive' - honestly describing the social conditions which are 'divisive' and unjust. Wright's great sin is that he is a 'truth-monger' unwilling to shut-up and pay lip service to power and bless the missiles whereas Hagee and Parsley are the 'false prophets' of a 'state religion' bent on conquering the world.
Even Wright's reported allegation that HIV may have been spread in Africa by the US - has some interesting historical basis which social scientists have taken very seriously - including noting the huge US sponsored mandatory polio 'vaccination' campaigns in the Congo in the 60's - in areas which were precisely the origin and epicenter of the the HIV epidemic. Could these activities have led to selective pressure on simian retrovirus to mutate, jump species and present in a virulent human form? No one wants to talk about the role that medicine and public health could have in spreading disease - but it has also been speculated that Hepatitis C infection reached epidemic proportions in Egypt as a result of a nation wide mandatory vaccination campaign with an experimental anti-schistosomiasis vaccine - using un-sterile needles among hundreds of thousands if not millions peasants and urban poor. (I do not oppose public health or vaccination campaigns - just one has to be objective and recognize the capacity of 'good intentions' to do great unexpected harm.)
One could argue that Hagee and Parsley are advocates of war crimes and crimes against humanity and as such should be extradited to the Hague to face charges of having encouraged the Bush Administration to cause the death of over 1 million Iraqis following the invasion of Iraq.
MSM will not balance the Radical Revs battle fairly. That is why Obama, MoveOn, and the DNC must keep a large stash ready. If they can't convince the MSM or embarrass them to play fair, the above should play the McCain/Hagee, McCain/Parsley videos everyday of the week the entire month of October.
We ought to be reminding the faithful that every pastor who endorses McCain, including Hagee and Parsley, is also endorsing his cussing, his pride of a hard-drinking skirt-chasing youth, the adultery involved in "exchanging wives, and 25 years of profiting from beer sold to drunk drivers, domestic abusers, teens, drunk condom-skipping (oops--an abortion) "lovers" and miscellaneous alcoholics.
The point is, this emerging group of pastors with McCain should not only be criticized for their crazy views. They should be roundly called the hypocrits they are for supporting McCain and what he represents---when their bill-paying church flocks don't and can't.
Get the pastors where it matters. Get 'em in the wallet by yelling at the parishoners. BEER matters when it's billions of beers.
Poet, what is wrong with this picture is that we keep on looking for others to do it for us - politicians, the mainstream media, or a savior - when we need to do the hard work ourselves. We have to start somewhere, and that somewhere is educating the public ourselves. There are all sorts of creative ways of doing so. Articles & threads are nice, they give us ideas, but they go nowhere without ACTIONS. Yes, we might be doomed, but defeatism isn't helpful in the long run. It's better to at least try. People DO change their thinking, when they are given the information they need and treated respectfully. (elitists have got to stop looking down on poor people's culture, for one example)
Sam--give it a rest. We got a trillion dollar plus war, a crumbling infrastructure, no single-payer universal healthcare, a Gulf Coast still staggering under the neglect of Katrina-Rita relief nearly 3 years later, a dollar and stock market in the tank, and petroleum making steady progress towards $4 plus for a gallon of gasoline and what aree we talking about? What is wrong with this picture?
The public rarely enjoins the true issues or the politicians the reasons are clear. Special interests and "free enterprise" capitalism it is what this country has devised as worth living and dying for. The basis for the consumer ideology is energy and its association with an auto centered economy closes the circle. It uses the media to direct the public flow of the so-called truth and we have a perfect example of it in this political campaign. It is why Exxon Mobile is out of control and the public is given platitudes rather than help.
The media is out of control this election has shown us just how far it has gone to dumb-down the public. The recent move by ABC to remove candidates from the debates was outrageous. They are trying to determine the fate of the country and the world being mouthpiece for special interests and the government and to silence dissent.
Media censure is unheard, the FCC should rule for the public but like the EPA its teeth are continually drawn. The media has no right to exclude any politician who is running for office as happened recently with the ABC debate. The only exclusion under the rules used by ABC should apply to a candidate not sitting in public office. The license of ABC would be lifted if the rules were changed but the congress, with the exception of a few pushes for more media conglomeration supported by special interests. I hope that someone picks up on this thought. We have seen the obsession by FOX and CNN, particularly in the form of Wolf Blitzer, and the FOX rabid journalists constantly referring to the Rev. Wright controversy.
Blitzer's bias is clear. He is quick to use every possible negative he can against Obama from the Flag Pin to anything else he could get his mouth around. His support for Clinton has been clear and inappropriate, for CNN to call itself a "fair and balanced" news network. I quote Mr. Nichols:
" The media pretense of being a fly on the wall has often been preposterous. In the real world of politics — where power brokers and manipulators proceed with the cynical axiom that perception is reality — the fly on the wall is the wall. The political press corps is not observing reality as much as redefining it while obstructing outlooks and constraining public perceptions."
As usual, few are able to see the stampede of the public sheep created by media. I support the change that Obama represents! He is intelligent and wants America once again to be looked upon as a great nation that it could still be and once was. The present "lack of experience" cry of Clinton is preposterous. Could anyone having been near the White house as long as Bush done as badly for the USA? There is experience! However, the discovery of a job approval rating for him at about 28% of the American people speaks volumes about experience. No one could have been as bad as the Bush team! There is experience!
A flight from entrenched American politics is necessary . . .it has ruined this country and made greed the single value of importance. The young people once again embrace hope as a result of the Obama campaign. The Hillary political group and entrenched politics have virtually destroyed America with its policies and exclusive power clubs. She has believed this form government is America.
Clinton recently morphed to the Obama populist message, it was called, "finding her voice" while at the beginning of her stump showing her Madeline Albright, bomb the children image.
Can anyone truly think that change is unnecessary? I guess not since all the politicos have adopted his message including McCain? The mistakes that Obama may make as president cannot be greater than those of the past seven years. It is also necessary to give him a democratic congress to make certain that the programs that Americans want can be enacted.
Mr. Gore Vidal, has pointedly criticized mainstream media as one of the major problems, and what is wrong with the USA. The corporate media conglomerates control the message and that message is perversely distorted and panders to its advertising portfolio! Wolf Blitzer one of the glaring examples of this criticism and shows clearly those distorted ideas with his reporting, which is nothing more than partially factual opinion dictated by his bosses.
He is a person who has no right to shape public opinion far from being the "fly on the wall" he espouses to be. We must remember flies morph from maggots. He displays ignorance as a virtue for the entire world to see, an example of what is considered, by many in America to be news reporting. If Blitzer were billed as a CNN commentator, at least the public would not be hoodwinked to believe his reporting to be the truth, while it is lack of concern for accuracy, rectitude and fairness to be considered to be news rather than opinion.
The people of the USA have been so ill informed as to what a change would really do and mean to this country and the change in leadership that is necessary, they have forgotten that no one could be worse than George Bush . . . No one, not even a dogcatcher, at least the dog catcher has compassion for
Animals!
The future leaders, Obama or McCain, should discuss the problems America and the world faces. The problem of public ignorance of the issues caused by the media is serious. In the heat of elections the media panders to voter ignorance. The emphasis, as we see on nightly, so-called news, is constant repetition of candidate's miscues. The result of the media sensationalism becomes, the wrong problem and the wrong message at a crucial time in world history. The emphasis on having the politicians address a credible platform of ideas based on an American and global interaction in the world is critical.
There is not enough time left for civilization to focus on rubbish. The energy and environmental issues for example or food and health care are the problems the media should be focusing upon. But to use the Rev, Wright issue for one week, to try and hurt the candidacy of Obama is a travesty. The issues most pressing are once again avoided, those really important issues that must be put before the congress; the environment, continued funding of Iraq, energy issues, education, health care and so many others not dealt with, all impacting upon the economy, the failure of public dialog is outrageous!
The issue of this election will impact on the environment, economy and the future of the USA as no others. Still, if more than 50% of eligible voters cast their votes it will be a miracle, as a result of regressive US election laws and media obfuscation. It is compulsory for everyone to vote in Australia it should be so in the USA as well. Few of the candidates are really talking about the major points, even those who are the most erudite. The environment in association with the economy or health care and elections reform, to name some, are kept out of public dialog as a result of the nonsense punditry hours on end. The world looks at America and its "star struck reality" in wonder.
The political discussion rests on the complete lack of talking points in isolation, such as, Clinton's health package or the nonsense gasoline tax rebate and it's cost, rather than what is really at stake with energy issues, human survival. The candidates for the US presidency rarely talk about the complete interrelated package of the issues combined. Obama alludes to this deficiency in the media and public issues. When he asks for this to occur it lands on deaf ears because the media and special interests do not want this to occur.
The media reduces the public debate to its most simplistic level with pundits arguing about one inconsequential issue or another rather than the truly important issues of our time. The American people are kept from hearing and understanding the relationship of the entire package of issues, which a true leader must address and deal with for the very survival of America in the world within a global economy. The costs for the war would pay for every single need from health care to American infrastructure repair and education, as well as the alleviation of world hunger and energy research this is what is what is at stake.
The media deals with Rev. Wright and American Flag lapel pins instead.
The media keeps the public dumbed down for obvious reasons they represent the moneyed people. As a result the public becomes unable to talk about moving radically toward change and the related issues affecting their very life and the future. The issues of climate change, energy issues and the global economy not only American economy is the part of the mortgage crisis created by the "free market" system. All the other issues like people losing their homes as a result of Wall Street manipulation are tied to these fundamental problems. These is the first and major issue which affects all other issues and is completely related to the economic changes which must take place.
The media board rooms instruct their so-called journalists (news/opinion readers) to stay clear of those subjects that would attack advertising, consumption, tied together in the media collusion with special interests to maintain the consumer system killing the world. Media in collusion with government does not want the change that would result in the decline of their hundreds of millions of dollars in profits.
All environmental problems are in one way or another associated with the Western world's consumption based lifestyle led by the USA. These issues are affected by consumer advertising much of it coming from the millions spent on advertising of irrelevant product and campaign advertising. The media should be dealing with true American and global issues in this campaign affecting the very basis of the so-called American Dream, fast becoming the global nightmare. This is what the next president of the USA must address!
Militant - the Bible and Torah call on Jews and Christians to do all sorts of things that they wouldn't dream of doing today and nowhere does the Quran mandate conversion by Jews or Christians to Islam. The "People of the Book" were taxed at a slightly higher rate than Muslims by their rulers because Jews and Christians were under no religious obligation to give a particular amount of their earnings to the state as were Muslims. I'm not saying that Muslim rulers were perfect, but they did a damn sight better for Jews, particularly and Christians than Christian countries have historically given to either.
And if you are referring to "jihad", there are three levels of jihad. The first is struggle with the self to stay on the path of God. The second is the struggle to keep your family and community on the path of God. The third is to defend the community and the faith when - and only when - it is under severe threat from outside forces. But even jihad does not mandate "conversion by the sword".
Rod Parsley is wrong on just about everything that comes out of his foul mouth. The Quran says a lot of things we find abhorrent today, but have you read Deuteronomy lately? Or Revelations for that matter? These texts are ancient and they reflect ancient myths and values. To defend him by using a quote from the Quran, written in the 7th century, pulled out of context is the weakest defense imaginable and I would hope somebody that defines themselves as a "militant liberal" would be able to appreciate the difference.
cangrande - my point exactly, thank you!
BTW - you forgot Ted Turner...
;)
So the Jews control the media? Funny, I never knew that Rupert Murdoch was Jewish. Nor Roger Ailes. Nor the big shots at GE and Viacom.
This is dangerous stuff. The next step would be to assert that the Jews control the entire country. (I have heard that one before). In the past, such accusations have led to persecution. It is fine to criticize Israel, but I get worried when I see "the Jews" accused of inordinate control. Most Jews want to control nothing more than their own lives.
"Pastor Parsley has called Islam "an anti-Christ religion that intends, through violence, to conquer the world..."
Pastor Parsley is partly right. The Quran calls on Muslims to war against those who refuse to surrender and pay tribute, including Christians and Jews, the so-called "Peoples of the Book." See 9:29. Unlike the "Land of Israel," the Islamic promised land has no geographical limit.
I'm also skeptical that Muslims outnumber Jews in the U.S. Surveys I've seen over the last few years put Jews at 2% of the population, Muslims at 1%.
Crimson -
Fact: There are many Jewish people in leadership and/or ownership positions in the mainstream American media.
Anti-Semitic Myth: This fact proves that "Jews CONTROL the media".
Do you see the difference?
I was not offended by much of what Rev. Wright had to say, actually much of it is true. And while I do find a double-standard exists, we are supposed to have free speech in this country. I have to say, though, that I find McCain's admiration of Hagee and Parsley quite frightening and appalling. The disconnect between many white people and Rev Wright is just that most white people have not experienced what black preaching is like.
Unfortuantely JEWS DO CONTROL most of the mainstream media.
This is a fact not an anti-semitic myth.
The empire will not tolerate an Obama presidency. The demonizing has only just begun.
I watched the video on YouTube yesterday of Rod Parsley and am disgusted. With the glaring exception of his comments about the US infecting black people with AIDS, most of Reverend Wright's comments were at least based in reality - the concept of blowback, etc. Parsley's diatribe is so far from any smidgen of truth and much more insulting and yet McCain gets a free pass to seek his endorsement and nobody pays attention, least of all the MSM. To be fair, the NY Times has run some editorials on the subject of Hagee, Falwell and McCain, but that's all they are - editorials. Am I surprised? No. But I am constantly disappointed and disgusted by our so-called "free press".
Check out the Parsley film at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WXZbIGJrDkg&eurl=http://bravenewfilms
McCain, Hagee and Parsley are a members of the good old boy's club and so they can say what they like. Wright, on the other hand, is a member of the the sheeple and so he can be slaughtered. It's been that way for a long time.

Well, using a preacher who attacks Muslims will do nothing. Its ok to bash muslims.
A preacher who says New Orleans got what they deserved--that might resonate.
But blacks generally dont have the clout that jews have-hence the uproar when anyone criticizes the home of the Chosen people of the One True God. Except no substitutes---unless you are a gentile, then you are screwed pretty much.
I dont know if Sammi davis jr's conversion to Judaism really works or rabbis were just being nice.
