Democrats on Committee Threaten to Subpoena Karl Rove About Former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman’s Prosecution

by Mary Orndorff

WASHINGTON - Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee Thursday threatened to subpoena former White House adviser Karl Rove to testify about former Gov. Don Siegelman’s case unless he agrees to appear voluntarily by May 12.0502 01 1

Rove earlier this week offered to answer questions about the Alabama case privately and not under oath, but that offer was rejected as “completely unacceptable.”

“We simply do not understand why anyone who is prepared to tell the truth would object to an oath and a record of what is said,” the Democrats wrote to Rove’s attorney Thursday.

The committee, led by Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., has been investigating allegations that Siegelman’s prosecution was orchestrated by politically motivated Republicans, and last month invited Rove to testify at what would be a second hearing on the subject.

It is the latest confrontation over whether President Bush’s senior advisers are covered by executive privilege as part of the broader investigation into the firings of several U.S. attorneys. Democrats in Congress and the White House have been battling on that issue for months and litigation is pending in federal court.

But Rove, through his attorney, said he could address the Siegelman case separately from the U.S. attorney scandal and would agree to answer questions limited to that subject.

“We recognize the committee’s legitimate interest in putting to rest the baseless and unsubstantiated charges that have been made by Governor Siegelman and others about his prosecution,” wrote Robert Luskin, Rove’s attorney. Luskin proposed that the interview with committee staff not be transcribed or under oath.

Democrats objected to those terms, saying Rove has already discussed the case publicly with reporters and that the Siegelman case is related to their overall concerns about the politicization of the Department of Justice under the Bush administration. They also said the limited questioning would “frustrate a full and fair inquiry.”

Siegelman, who served nine months of his sentence and is now free on bond awaiting his appeal, has asserted for six years that he was unfairly targeted by Republicans. More specifically, the Democrat has argued that Rove considered him a political threat to Alabama Republicans and pressured federal prosecutors to pursue criminal charges.

Rove and the prosecutors have denied it, and Siegelman was convicted in 2006 by a federal jury in Montgomery on corruption-related charges.

The House Judiciary Committee has not announced a date for another hearing on Siegelman’s case, or whether Siegelman himself would be called as a witness.

Conyers’ letter was also signed by Reps. Artur Davis, D-Birmingham; Linda Sanchez, D-Calif.; and Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis.

No oath binds the liars and subversives who make up the regime currently destroying the government of the People. Hook these lying scum up to a polygraph while they are questioned in court.

When I look at events since the ‘06 election, it appears to me that very few of our elected officials have the integrity to represent American citizens (read BALLS). Conyers and the rest of the criminals in Washington make noise, and then go along with bush and the rest of the republican jerks.

    Impeach, impeach, im……………

Oh yeah, I forget, you electected officials, with few exceptions, are cowards.

Yeah, take this as a challenge to do better.

It’s always a threat to take action but no action is ever taken. Spineless Dems and criminal repugs abound but nothing ever gets done. I’m pretty sick of it as are many others. I’d like to see Karl Rove in an orange jump suit but I doubt that will ever happen with the current leadership we have in both the House and the Senate. Rove should rot in jail for what he has wrought. He is not just a criminal but a terribly short-sighted man as well. His brand of politics has brought us to the brink of fascism with an imperial presidency. He is also a traitor for his role in the Valerie Plame case. Hanging is too good for him and as I am against the death penalty he should rot in prison for the remainder of his days. But talk is cheap and the Democrats have no will of their own. So life goes on without justice which is not unusual here in our so-called ‘nation of laws.’

“Democrats on Committee Threaten to Subpoena Karl Rove.”
Why don’t those cry baby pussys just say, “Ooh you making me so mad.” and stamp their feet. Jesus; Just subpoena the lying bastard. What the hell is the matter with these people? No wait, don’t answer that. It’ll scare me.

  5. Little Brother May 2nd, 2008 1:03 pm

Oooh– Democrats threatening to issue subpoenas again!

Rove must be shaking in his boots! After all, if he ignores the threat, they may go so far as to actually issue the subpoena! And if he defies the subpoena– under the advice of counsel, of course, perhaps Weepin’ Mike Mukasey himself– then the Dems will drag out their Big Gun: the Sternly-Worded Letter!

And that’ll pretty much be the end of it.

  6. truthmonger May 2nd, 2008 1:21 pm

Good luck dems trying to subpoena any repug. You helped stack the Scalito Court. Even if any were subpoena’d, they’d just use the Gonzo strategy - I don’t recall; I can’t remember; screw you!

This gov’t is a lost cause and it’s getting loster everyday.

  7. sdw917 May 2nd, 2008 1:27 pm

Subpoena him, then waterboard him, since that is not illegal.

  8. zhongman May 2nd, 2008 1:37 pm

Carl Rove needs to feel the ostracism of the American public whenever he ventures out. He should be shunned were ever he goes.

  9. jjpeter May 2nd, 2008 1:42 pm

Rove has earned the contempt of any decent, law abiding person in this country. His actions have poisoned the sacred ground of democracy with his Swift boat attacks, rigging elections, “losing” thousands of emails that showed a trail of partisan corruption of the justice dept and their dealings throughout the country.

America can regain some of her lost reputation if the LAW can get this little bastard into court and then, into jail.

  11. TheLorax May 2nd, 2008 2:59 pm

Good thing for Rove that Congress is only talking out their behinds. The powerless bunch of bobblehead wimps will just cry when he fails to show up. They squandered their authority long ago and don’t even have enough power to get the janitor to vaccuum the floor.
Karl will just laugh and say “Yeah right!” as they all lament.

  12. rebelnow May 2nd, 2008 3:04 pm

As a loyal democrat (not), all I can say is that this Rove guy makes me so mad I could spit, but if I do get the courage to really spit, I’ll make sure that I do it in the proper receptacle, out of sight, so as not to offend anyone, gosh darn it all.

  13. Richard Green May 2nd, 2008 3:43 pm

……just go ahead and subpoena the fat, lying dingleberry! Drop it on him!!

  14. spencefi May 2nd, 2008 5:34 pm

I’m with “limric” above, just subpoena the slime already! Not that it will do any good. If by some miracle, they decide to throw him under the bus and let him be convicted of this one (out of innumerable crimes), he’ll just be pardoned by Bush faster than we can say, “Scooter Libby.”

  15. bbr-001 May 2nd, 2008 5:37 pm

I read some place that Laura Bush’s nickname for him is “Pigpen”. Looks like, acts like, smells like.

    He’s a pig, alright.

  16. Darius q Paquette May 2nd, 2008 6:01 pm

None of those assh-les want to be held accountable for anything

  17. Judith for peace May 2nd, 2008 6:08 pm

Pigs are cleaner than he is and they are sweet, so get over the animal name calling. He’s a slime. Just a piece of used up shit. I want to see all these bastards in prison. Behind bars. Rotten bastards.

  18. The Skeptical Cynic May 2nd, 2008 7:53 pm

Subpoena, schamena. Do you really think this scmuck would comply with a subpoena? From this congress of farking eunuchs? Some shyster lawyer will send a letter from a law firm with the names of a dozen former congressmen and senators on the letterhead to Conyers. the letter will some off the farking wall MUS (made up sh*t)why Rove does have have to testify. Conyers will wring his hands in despair and do nothing OR appeal tothe the Queen of Hearts Federal Court for the Washington District where some fascist judge(appointed by Reagan the dunce, or Bush the Dim or Bush the Delusional) ruling
“Sounds good to me. What’s say Karl, golf Saturday?”

  19. bbr-001 May 2nd, 2008 8:56 pm

Looks like Rove has a part time job with Fox. Just in time as Geraldo is really getting tired of all that s__t they make hin say about Obama and Rev Wright. Rupert and Hill are buds, right?

  20. jclientelle May 2nd, 2008 10:58 pm

Democrats on the committee: FOLLOW THROUGH FOR ONCE.

  21. Nietzsche May 2nd, 2008 11:28 pm

You Democrats going to do something or is this more talk? Rove doesn’t give a damn what you think. Do something. Will you follow through for once?

  22. NateW May 3rd, 2008 2:00 am

Considering Rove helped architect the jailing of Siegelman in a manner not unfamiliar in places like Zimbabwe, Belarus, & Burma, it is the Congressional Democrats interest to pursue this as it could have very well been them hauled off to jail if they had angered Bush’s brain. Poetic justice would have Siegelman suing Rove and his puppets in the Alabama US Attorney’s office for false imprisonment & having those scum bags had their wages attached to pay off the judgement. The impossible dream is that Rove see the inside of the same jail he sent Siegelman to.

  23. bobpomeroy May 3rd, 2008 2:40 am

Hope springs eternal that someone will take big bite out this guy’s juicy head sooner or later.

  24. tetti_tatti May 3rd, 2008 3:15 am

Democrats won’t do sh*t. Rove is laughing at all of them.

  25. DiabloRojo May 3rd, 2008 5:04 am

    pbrsailor:

In re: “When I look at events since the `06 election, it appears to me that very few of our elected officials have the integrity to represent American citizens…”

Why only look since the `06 election? What about since the the 2000 election cycle and trhe events that ensued; or since Bonzo Reagan and the Nefarious elder Bush were elected?

I question your use of “election” since this implies that such officials were duly elected by a democratic electoral process rather than the more accurate albeit dubious hand selected Neocon chicanery/skull duggery.

  26. DiabloRojo May 3rd, 2008 5:16 am

Jezuzkrist Crumb, what’s with the ALL CAPS shit huh?

  27. Gail May 3rd, 2008 11:05 am

“We simply do not understand why anyone who is prepared to tell the truth would object to an oath and a record of what is said,” the Democrats wrote to Rove’s attorney Thursday.

Why have Democrats agreed (over the past seven years) to allow top officials at Congressional hearings bypass the customary oath if the truth means so much to them?

At least they’ve been consistant in expressing their pseudo-concern for truth and our Constitution. Both parties deserve recognition for their steadfast and fallacious performances.

  30. Jim Glover May 3rd, 2008 3:11 pm

Are some of you folks just now finding out that Congress and most Americans are scared of the Bush Gang?

Run for the hills? No way…. I have been defying these bastards since I was a Cold War Kid. Whenever you confront them, they hide.

Some of you folks are just as afraid as Congress and spread your fear by “the Nazis are coming and Be afraid!”…. With that kind of fear mongering going on here all the time how hypocritical to single out Congress of being afraid.

The War Machine needs fear to grow and never end and too many here are supplying them with the needed endless fear.

The truth is it is them that are the cowards and the bluffers, and you give them all the power they need with your fear mongering.

War Babies, it is time to grow up!

  31. Treefrog May 3rd, 2008 8:09 pm

I can’t help but notice all the pictures of Americans are all obese people. We are becoming identified by our girth as opposed to other populations.

  32. wcdevins May 3rd, 2008 8:19 pm

Hasn’t this in-the-closet hypocrite been subpoenaed already, on some other crime he’s perpetrated on the American Constitution? Haul his fat lying ass in, or toss it into Guantánamo where he belongs.

  33. Kwe May 3rd, 2008 10:19 pm

Yes Crumb, I remember the Jeff Gannon prostitue/fake reporter incident. The press couldn’t get away from that story fast enough, and yet, couldn’t get enough of Monica’s stained blue dress. I’d venture to guess, though, that Bush has had a taste of Guckert/Gannon himself as he had homosexual encounters as a skull and bones at Yale. “Hypocrites” is an apt description, but somehow doesn’t even begin to measure the depths of depravity and evil that Bush and Rove have unleashed on the entire planet. With all that family history with Nazi’s it’s no wonder. Could we the people just get one patriot to release one picture of Bush/Rove in the act? You know, that Great Oz moment? But wait, there actually is a photograph of Bush tenderly holding Guckert’s head. Reminds me of Clinton and Lewinsky which got endless press….www.mysite.verizon.net/myk15/bushhugsmanho.html
    YUK!

  34. SuperNova May 4th, 2008 5:56 am

I don’t know why they are threatening subpoenas, or anything for that matter? Why don’t they just do it? I’ll volunteer to draft them myself. The democratic controlled congress reminds us of the German Sheppard that barks and growls at you from the fence as you are walking down the steet. But when you walk up to the fence in it’s direction it runs away scared, but still barking at you. Trying to hide under the house barking from a safe distance. The fact of the matter is this “democracy” as many have noted and is true pertaining to the educational system, and the economic system……is a complete scam.
