John McCain's Serious Foreign Policy
John McCain was on a conference call with right-wing bloggers yesterday and boasted:
I think that people should understand that I will be Hamas's worst nightmare.
What possible reason would a U.S. President have for turning himself and our country into a "nightmare" for Hamas, let alone its "worst nightmare"? Hamas is a single-issue Palestinian group, focused exclusively on its "territorial dispute" with Israel (and, in light of its victory in the U.S.-demanded election, is also now preoccupied with governing the Palestinian Authority). Is there anyone who thinks that Hamas has tried to, will try to, or ever could attack the U.S.? Hamas is an enemy of Israel, not the U.S. Is that a distinction we even recognize any more?
What exactly is the point of feeding Israel billions of dollars every year in military aid if we're going to deem every one of its fights to be our fight, and every one of its enemies to be our Enemy? Is that actually what Americans want to do: insinuate ourselves even more into other endless, intractable religious and ethnic conflicts in the Middle East?
More disturbingly still, this chest-beating threat from McCain is merely the latest in a long line of adolescent, mindlessly belligerent war cries emanating from the Serious foreign policy candidate. In a GOP debate in May of last year, he bellowed that he would "follow [Osama bin Laden] to the gates of hell" only thereafter, according to ABC News, to then "crack[] a smile which gave the impression to some viewers that perhaps he viewed his own answer as being over the top." But he's since repeated that demonic formulation on numerous occasions, followed by the same creepy, self-satisfied smirk:
. And here was McCain's sober, Serious prescription in 2006 for ending sectarian warfare in Iraq:One of the things I would do if I were President would be to sit the Shiites and the Sunnis down and say, "Stop the bullshit."
Add to that his merry singing of the joys of dropping bombs on the Iranian people, and it's clear that McCain's foreign policy approach seems even more childishly bellicose than the current occupant of the Oval Office. There's a reason that Bill Kristol and Joe Lieberman are such ardent supporters.
Is there anyone outside of Lieberman and John Bolton who thinks that what we need are more cartoon-like imperial threats to the world about how we're going to pummel and smash everyone if they don't step into line? Is that mentality going to reduce complex religious and geostrategic threats or severely worsen them? McCain's foreign policy approach actually seems to be a less restrained and less complex rendition of Bush's "Bring-em-on" swagger that has really worked miracles in Iraq. Whatever adjectives might describe McCain's barren, cliched tough guy decrees, Serious -- or "moderate" -- isn't it.
UPDATE: Also, it would be great to know what McCain plans to do, exactly, to turn himself into Hamas' "worst nightmare." Will he invade Gaza? Bomb targets in the not-yet-settled-by-Israel-parts of the West Bank? Have the CIA engage in covert "regime change" efforts to remove Hamas, the democratically elected government, and replace it with rulers whom McCain likes better? Will we be an even more active participant in the endless Israeli-Palestinian dispute? What are McCain's plans specifically for unleashing new "nightmares" on Hamas?
Glenn Greenwald was previously a constitutional law and civil rights litigator in New York. He is the author of the New York Times Bestselling book "How Would a Patriot Act?," a critique of the Bush administration's use of executive power, released in May 2006. His second book, "A Tragic Legacy", examines the Bush legacy.

McCain is obviously GWBush's love-child brother. They are so much alike it's scary!

"Panama Jack" McCain, if elected, will, like El Busho, continue to be good for the "investor class" and the military industrial complex's "economy."
or maybe District of Columbians?

John Insane as President of the USA is MY worst nightmare.
And considering his age, his history, the the USA's seeming unconcern with bin Ladens whereabouts...it seems more likely that he will be WAITING for bin Laden at the gates of hell, not following him there.
"The people and goverment of Columbia have every right to defend themselves"
Holdem...are you talking about British Columbia?
No change something I have said for about I don't know how many years now.
I can understand the frustration of the American people since the WH does not listen to the people who voted them in and it will be no different with the Dems in. Like I also said before don't vote anyone who is not America and only America first. The Lie- bermans should not be voted in as he supports the Rep leader.
I still feel McCain has alzheimers or Uncle Al as it has been nick named
Yes, McCain is an idiot. But so is Hillary, where Israel is concerned. She denounced Jimmy Carter soundly when he dared meet with a Hamas leader and elicit an interest in peace talks. The sad fact is that any candidate for national office feels compelled to parrot the Israeli Government, to prove to the powerful Israeli lobby that basically controls American Mideast policy that he/she will do anything the Israeli Government asks. Even Barack Obama, whom I support, would be afraid to sound sympathetic to the Palestinians.
The only two kinds of Republicans are millionaires and suckers.
Peace Coup et al, we can reframe the entire discussion using the yearly "Economic Report of the President":
Under Republican presidents since 1960, the federal deficit has averaged $131 billion a year. Under Democrats, that figure is $30 billion.
Spending goes up faster under Republican administrations than under Democratic ones, and the economy grows faster under Democrats than under Republicans. What grows faster under Republicans is debt.
Federal spending has risen $60 billion a year under Republican administrations but only $35 billion a year under Democratic administrations. Under Republicans it goes to corporate welfare and foreign wars while under Democrats it goes to social programs.
In the average Republican year, the deficit has grown by $36 billion. In the average Democratic year, it has shrunk by $25 billion!
From 1960 to 2005 (adjusted for inflation) the GDP rose an average of $165 billion a year under Republicans and $212 billion a year under Democrats. That's 28% better in the long term under Democrats!
Personal income - the money in your pocket - rises 30% faster under Democratic administrations than under Republican ones.
Democratic administrations have a better record on inflation (3.13% vs 3.89% - your money goes farther longer under democrats) and unemployment (5.33% vs 6.38% - there are more jobs under Democrats).
Unemployment goes up in the average Republican year and down in the average Democrat year.
If everyone voted their economic best interests, the Republican Party would shrivel up and blow away, leaving a few greedy fat cats. Them I can understand, but working people? I just can't see working people voting for Republicans.
Help open their eyes to the truth about Republicanism.
The problem is that most Americans have no problem with statements like these because they see the world in the "us versus them" frame created by the Bush Administration.
We can't argue based on facts because people don't listen to facts. All the Republicans have to do is claim we support the terrorists and are being anti-semetic if we show compassion for the Palestinians or criticize the expansionist settlement policies of Israel.
How do we change the frame? How do we make it so McCain doesn't appear patriotic and macho when he threatens more war? How do we get our fellow citizens to understand that war is a strategy for failure?
It would be easy to underestimate John McCain.
The press loooves him - so far - standing ovation for JM, nada for Obama.
But I do believe his own voting record and his own words will defeat him, soundly.
Perhaps one or two percent of the people can count John McCain on their side.
For the rest of us, pick an issue: he is on the wrong side of every one.
And yet he's likely to win ): Particularly if Dems choose Obama. In a sharply divided nation, little things will cost them in the fall. I will vote outside the box while hoping that those inside of it will vote for the lesser of two evils (which is Clinton, not Obama).
The only way we are ever going to defeat the Israeli lobby is if we start supporting anti-lobby candidates! That means: voting outside the two-party system (with rare exceptions).
I think whichever poster on CD said that war is the biggest export of the United States got it exactly right.
John McCain's serious foreign policy is...a joke! Remember the Manchurian Candidate! No POW who has had 5 years of "handling" by a determined and psychologically sophisticated enemy should ever be allowed to hold any elective office. There is just too much potential for mischief by whoever is controling him at present.
I figure that when McCain was leaving college, almost at the bottom of his class (but not really worried about that...Dad would look after things), he saw BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI. He thrilled to the Alex Guinness character, suffering in that corrugated metal hut under the alien Asian sun, always more concerned about the welfare of his men than about his own...a real leader.
A decade and a half later, he was actually in pow camp in Asia, dealing whatever deals he dealt with his captors.
So after he was released from that pow camp, and he returned stateside, he had a rough idea what narrative he would build his future on.
McCain doesn't have to worry about foreign policy. That will be decided in Israel.
Hoa binh
Rumor has it that one of McCrazy's "serious" plans is to give out free blankets to all Palestinians, each dipped in a small pox cocktail.
Hey, it worked once, right?
WAR! WAR! WAR! And more WAR! As our beloved U.S. of A. is falling apart at the seams, it seems that the only thing on the minds of the Republicans is WAR! We can't do with just one. We must have two, three, four, or maybe five or six going at the same time. With this attitude, it truly will not be long before one or more of these wars does turn into the nightmare of a nuclear war. Folks, the Democratic MUST come together for the good of all Americans as well as the world. We MUST stop the petty fighting between those of us who want Hillary and those who want Obama. Either one of them would be FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR better than John McCain. Obviously, both of them cannot be President at the same time. Thus, for the good of our country and people everywhere on this planet, let's stop the petty bickering and name calling, allow everyone to have his or her say by completing all of the primaries and then we all unite behind ONE candidate. All of you who are saying either you will not vote or you will vote for John McCain unless your candidate is selected, are splintering the party. This is exactly what the Republicans want you to do. If we are divided, THEY will win and we can be assured of staying in one or more wars for many, many years to come, unless, of course, one or more of these wars go nuclear. At that point we are GONE!!!
Both Hillary and Obama want bigger troops levels, more defense spending, moving more aggressively back into Afghantistan, keeping illegal economic sanctions on Cuba, supporting the criminal government of Colombia, opposing the democracies in Ecuador and Venezuela, and pouring more money into our 51st state, Israel...just like McSame.
All three are neoliberalist and imperialist and free traders.
Not a damn dime's worth of difference between the three.
How much bragging will McBush do from the Neo-Con's Neo Diem Bien Phu in Bragdad's Twilight Zone?
I still say he's in the early stages of alzheimers. And the majority of republicans hold their noses when they sing his praises. I just can't figure out who was behind his becoming "IT."
Senator McCain at age 71 is in his dotage, and he often is making statements that are childish, crazy as hell.
And this aged and angry white man will be our president? Question is, will he be any worse than the current occupant?
It's a shame you can't just throw a dart at the phonebook to choose a president. Those that seek the position have to give neck to the vampiric lords of the MIC and then they are lost. The presidency should be imposed randomly on unwilling citizens. You could never do worse than you've been doing.
Americans love anger, vengeance and the catharsis of violence. McCain's "Dirty Harry" act will not hurt him in the ignorant "heartland" anymore than Clinton threatening to "obliterate" Iran or any other country. In a McCain vs Clinton race, they might consider sharing Leiberman as vice president as he is a good choice for either and a glad cheerleader for obliteration -- especially if his Israeli handlers are for it.
Former: The people and goverment of Columbia have every right to defend themselves against the terrorist threat posed by FARC, which uses human slaves to harvest coca leaves and sets off bombs in crowded nightclubs. Why is it that you "progressives" ALWAYS support those who target the innocent?
But look, on a serious note, how exactly do you guys expect jewish voters not to respond to Mccain making statements like "I will be Hamas' worst nightmare"? Especially when I can get on a site like commondreams and see open support for hamas expressed by those who also support Obama. I like Obama, if anything because of his LACK of a record on the issues. However, Mccain will already likely get the "Reagan Democrats" among ethnic catholic voters, and if he gets a decent part of the jewish and hispanic votes as well then we will again see democrats snatch defeat from the jews of victory.
Thanks, idiots. The last thing we need is another open-borders, free trade republican!
"The press loooves him - so far - standing ovation for JM, nada for Obama."
I certainly can't disagree with the first part. Thats how he survived.
But if you are suggesting Obama hasn't had special and preferntial attention from the press, you simply haven't been paying attention. He's gotten a real soft ride so far, it won't carry over to November.
No, I'm not for Hillary nor Obama nor McCsin.
I'm still waiting for Obama's explanation to clear his problems up or Hillary to drop out.
Wake up people the JEWS run the corporations, media and politics in this country( if not most of the world.) Hitler tried to save us but was attacked by that JEW lover FDR, his butt-buddy Churchill, and that Commie bastard Stalin. God save the (U.S)Arryan Nation.
"follow [Osama bin Laden] to the gates of hell"
Can you imagine the MSM headlines if that was said by Clinton or Obama?
DEMOCRAT IS A FOLLOWER OF OSAMA BIN LADEN!
Proof of the nascent Alzheimer's is his assumption of the W values he railed against in 2000. It's too bad; he's my senator. He would still be a better president than this one, and he'll be exposed. But can you imagine likeable Chuck Huckleberry as president? He'll win or lose on the VP nomination. In any event, I'm voting for Obama, even though he looks like he needs a vacation after this next one.
Earl, for the most part you are preaching to the converted on here...
Thomas, the press isn't going after Mccain because its not interesting for then to do so, and because neither Hillary nor Obama are going after him either. Thanks to Hitlary Clintler, and her idiotic desire to dominate the democratic party, all of Obama's faults are being magnified while Mccain's much more serious drawbacks are being ignored. This might help or hurt him in the general. Keep in mind Obama's has over a year to deal with what the republicans will throw at him (thanks to Hillary), while Mccain has yet to have to respond to the kinds of arguments the democrats will throw at him. If only Obama was more of an economic patriot, supporting protectionism and border security, he would realy be able to whallop Mccain. The way to beat Mccain is not on foreign policy but the domestic economy.
It would also be nice if you jew-hating leftists could just shut up for a minute. I know you won't, but keep in mind you're only costing Obama votes with this crap.
Holding on to Stupid Lies, how can you damn tell such abominable lies, when I know for a fact that the Colomiban regime is a dope pushing, kill crazy bunch of bastards, and the decent people of Colombia and their neighbors have a right to defend themselves against these gansters.
As to Earl "hate the Jews and FDR" Simmons, I don't support any Israeli government imperialist and war mongering polices nor actually do many Jews, but your remarks so poison the discusssion here that I'm sickened by them.
AD, the Columbian regime is a lot of things, its not unified in any way shape or form and yes, of course a lot of it is corrupt like in every single South American country. However, FARC is far worse, and we should support the Columbian government in so far as they go after the FARC.
And stop kidding yourself. 95-98% of jewish people support israel, as we should be proud to do. The REAL warmongers are Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran. Do you ever criticize them for their constant threats and attacks? Of course you don't, so stop pretending you are much different then Earl here.
l am sick and tired of this "we must back our democratic friends in the middle east(AKA lsrael)" They are big boys now, they are the only Nuclear power in the area and know that as long as they are, they don't have to negotiate. Maybe if we demanded a nuclear free zone in the Middle-East we could bring about a just peace.

Holden, what is a goverment? Where is Columbia? Why are you right-wingers ALWAYS so poor with language?
hoa binh said ....."mccain does not have to worry about foreign policy...it will be decided by israel" hoa binh is 150% correct......bush\cheney can get israel to do it's dirty work.....bomb iran, syria, north korea and labanon
Regarding the "us vs. them" mentality, and what predisposes some people to think in that way, I found Dr. Altemeyer's "The Authoritarians" an insightful research-based read. The pdf (free) is at http://home.cc.umanitoba.ca/~altemey/
Jaded Prole has it right. AIPEC is a ubiquitous virus, and global capitalism is going to enslave everybody, but the problem that goes right for the jugular is "anger, vengeance and the catharsis of violence." What scares me most about John McCain is soldiery, because soldiery is at the opposite end of the human spectrum from intelligence and reason.
The military is a prolongation of childhood. From Cowboys & Indians to comic books and video shoot 'em ups, testosterone addled adolescents are ushered directly into boot camps where, like medieval castrati, they are encouraged to mature no further. They are immersed in a brainless, violent culture of Hoo-ah! like pickles in vinegar. Because military culture is a reliable fountain of horror and death, it is baptism in horror and death that passes for the rite of manhood with soldiers. As they age, the Goeffrey Millers and the John McCains, their faces remain frozen in the vacuous, predatory, childish dream of soldiery, and they never, ever have to grow up.
Patton "loved it", battlefields littered with the bodies of people not himself. And what if Patton, without ever having to mature into a statesman or a philosopher, had moved from command of the Third Army to command of the whole country? 300 million infantrymen to chase the enemy-du-jour to the gates of hell. A dream come true.
Here's a recipe for a plane crash. You go down to the arcade and pick the most simpleminded, most belligerent little dropout you can find, and you make him the pilot. John has crashed three airplanes so far. Time to make him President.

This similarity in spelling inability makes me suspect that "Earl Simmins" is just Holden under a different login. Neo-Nazis typically don't post much to Common Dreams, thank goodness.
As for Holden's remarks about "you jew-hating leftists" and "warmongering Iran," well, I've got two questions. One, are leftist Jews also "jew-hating leftists"? Two, how many countries has the "warmongering" country of Iran invaded in the last, let's say, two hundred years?
Sorry, I've got one more question. Per your comment that "95-98% of jewish people support israel", what exactly does it mean to "support" Israel? Does it mean to cheer when it clusterbombs Lebanese civilians? Does it mean to celebrate when it murders 11-year-old Palestinians and calls them "terrorists?" If so, then many in Israel itself do not "support" Israel. If, however, "supporting Israel" means to work for its prosperity and peaceful co-existence with its neighbors, then people like you, Holden, are Israel's worst enemies.
Whether it's a result of checking into the Hanoi Hilton or not I don't know but he's not playing with a full deck!
The rumour mill in the alleys of Gaza is that as soon they heard that McNasty, as he was called by his young buddies at one time, pronounced that he will, as soon as he becomes CinC, become Hamas' worst nightmare, many members of Hamas jokingly took an oath not to day dream. One of the young residents of the Gaza compound who had done some wikipedia search said something to the effect that he read where John McCain had a reputation for making jokes. And one that he remembers reading about several times was a bit riske and in which Sen. McCain confides to his colleagues, "You wanna know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly?" he asks. And follows it with "Because her father is Janet Reno."
Ginger: I'm so sorry to have to tell you, but the democrats are not going to come together, and even if they did, their policies wouldn't be much different from the republican policies, because both parties are completely beholden to the Military-Industrial Complex, and the MIC wants only more war, war into the indefinite future. If you want to get out of the way of the huge blowback that we will attract back on our shores, then consider moving out of the United States to somewhere in South America, because nuclear missles will never rain down on South America, but they almost certainly will rain down here.
Galen,
Exactly my thoughts. Now I definitely will not vote for Billary, Obomba, and Johnny Bomb Bomb.
Think Manchurian Candidate. War and torture make people crazy, not good qualities for a president.
P.S. Please keep name calling, obscene language and hate stuff out of your posts. That kind of writing casts serious doubts on your intelligence.
War is something America does to other people in far away places for reasons that have nothing to do with defence.
We hardly ever get jackbooted thugs kicking in our doors, stealing our most valuable possessions, and raping our daughters. We hardly ever get our houses blown apart by missiles or suffer from DU poisoning, or have our sons blown apart by cluster bombs. Our water and electricity services even still work perfectly - despite all the war we have been having.
Little wonder, then, that war is so popular here in the United States.
"McCain's foreign policy approach actually seems to be a less restrained and less complex rendition of Bush's "Bring-em-on" swagger that has really worked miracles in Iraq."
I heard someone on NPR say that McCain's expertise is in foreign policy.
If this guy becomes president we can be certain this country will experience a total collapse.
John McCain, just another power drunk monkey.
McCain and his mentor and role model (albeit covert) Bush bedazzle the public by substituting mindless jingoism for thoughtful patriotism, superstitious certitude for faith, aggression for self-defense, bigotry for cultural norms, greed for enlightened self-interest, a cult of victimism for introspection and learning from experience, domination for leadership and tyranny for security. It's disgraceful and, for those of us who truly love our country without being blind to its flaws, maddening.
When Reverend Wright said, in more colorful language, the same thing that government intelligence analysts have--that 9/11 was precipitated by our longstanding foreign policy mistakes--he was vilified. Bush told us we were attacked because of our freedom and prosperity and has done all he can to deprive us of both.
Obama has just said he will support Gen. Petraeus for command of CENTCOM.
And this makes him different from McCain and Hillary how?
Didn't he say he wanted CHANGE in DC?
Mark my words: McCain the next president of this sorry nation. The so called (left) media love to kiss his butt!
Look at the Penn. exit crap and other insider post info.
It says that neither Dem. can beat him. I am sneaking across the border, just no saying which one!
