IAEA Slams US On Syria Bombing; Will Probe Reactor Report Carefully
VIENNA, Austria - The head of the U.N. nuclear monitoring agency angrily criticized Israel on Friday for bombing an alleged Syrian nuclear facility, and chastised the U.S. for withholding information on the site.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said Director-General Mohamed ElBaradei also was not provided information about the site until Thursday, the same day U.S. officials briefed members of the House Intelligence Committee about evidence including dozens of photographs taken from ground level and footage of the interior of the building gathered by spy satellites after the Israeli strike seven months ago.
ElBaradei was briefed by telephone by John Rood, the U.S. undersecretary of state for arms control.
"The Director General deplores the fact that this information was not provided to the Agency in a timely manner, in accordance with the Agency's responsibilities under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to enable it to verify its veracity and establish the facts," ElBaradei's office said.
Additionally, "the Director General views the unilateral use of force by Israel as undermining the due process of verification that is at the heart of the non-proliferation regime," it said.
ElBaradei did not criticize North Korea or Syria in his statement.
The IAEA's mission includes trying to keep nuclear proliferation in check, and it depends on member states for information in trying to carry out that task. It is currently probing allegations Iran tried to make nuclear weapons using not only its own research but intelligence provided by the U.S. and other members of the 35-nation IAEA board.
Intelligence committee members also expressed anger Thursday over the seven-month time lapse before their committee was briefed.
Top U.S. intelligence officials who briefed reporters in Washington Thursday said they had high confidence in the judgment that North Korea had aided Syria with its nuclear program and the intention was to produce plutonium. But they claimed only low confidence for the conclusion that it was meant for weapons development, in part because there was no reprocessing facility at the site - something that would be needed to extract plutonium from spent reactor fuel for use in a bomb.
The Syrian reactor was within weeks or months of being functional when Israeli jets destroyed it, a top U.S. official told The Associated Press in Washington, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. The official said the facility was mostly completed but still had needed significant testing before it could have been declared operational.
Repeating its previous stance, Syria, in a statement issued Thursday denied the allegations.

you forgot Diebold , marshal law, and about 50% of American don't vote who could. Even with the fixed elections of the passed Bush only got about a 25% number of votes that could have been cast to get him in the WH.
If in another country if that few votes were cast the WH, UN would have called the election illegal or fixed.
I think John McCain knows that he doesn't have to worry about getting into the White House. He's actually going on vacation for a while! When he does speak, it seems like he just doesn't care about the election - either that or he has been drugged, or is totally senile. But could it be that he knows the cons are planning an attack on Iran, maybe, say, in October, that will get people scared and looking for a war hero, and like Rudy Giuliani appearing as father-savior on the ashes of the twin towers, Papa McCain will don his uniform and wave his flag and we'll all (well, not me) follow blindly behind him?
What remains most telling is that we cannot seem to conjure up any info on the the general state of the immediate environment near this site at present, including the nearby river.
Why is that?

Why because the building was the same size? Did your photos show the roads going to and from. Making a reactor sort takes very heavy equipment and simple dirt roads don't cut it. Working on, in and around Nuke plants was something my Dad did for many years. Have you ever been in a Nuke plant on even a tour? I have several times and you would see how big things are . This is no better than the crap BS crayon drawings Powell showed the UN before Iraq.
Ken Nuti and mwb,
The 2007 article that you unearthed from the archives blew my mind. It actually says that the US used "tactical nuclear weapons" to take out a nuclear plant "under construction" in Syria. So, again, if I am understanding this correctly, we launched an unprovoked attack using nuclear weapons, on another country because we thought maybe it was building a nuclear plant that maybe would be used to make the very weapons that we were unleashing upon its people?? My mind is reeling.
Dr. Elbaradei's and the AIEA's reputation is above reproach. They called it correctly in Iraq, North Korea, and elsewhere. They and their opinions have been circumvented, ignored, dissembled or outright criticized by this Administration. A dozing baboon could recognize the difference in credibility between the AIEA and this bunch that are seemingly dead-set on initiation of Armagedon, their version of the end times. Personally, I have a much different version of how they should realize their end times. How about a little question and answer period in the Hague?
Same script with an emphasis on our "new" emeny.
Mr. Elbaradei got it right. Israel should have reported its suspicion of the building to IAEA for inspection rather than the US, instead of bombing it.
We certainly can't give credence to ANYTHING from this administration. It's still fresh in my mind the satellite photos of WMDs being moved before the inspectors arrived, and the mobile chemical weapons trailors presented by Colon Powell at the UN.
The photos that claim to be in Syria could have been taken any where. And the picture of the two men could have been imposed. Don't be duped by these international terrorists.
mwb26810, that is indeed the one; thank you for salvaging that. Here it is again:

I was attempting to follow up on it last year, but it just dropped off the map. Many of the comments were disqualifying it as propaganda by Israeli "officials" but I don't see how that's logical.
Seymour Hersch's article makes no allusion to this at all and in fact states only that "at least four Israeli planes..." etc.
I can offer no further opinion here except to compare comments then to comments now by the same authors.

"WHO is pulling the strings??????????
WHO is really running the U.S. Government ???????????"
I must admit for years I thought Israel was a proxy for the USA in the Middle East. But it's clear now that it's the other way round. Which other country on earth, or on a planet for that matter, could murder innocent people in Palestine, destroy their homes, steal their land and crops, fence them in, block necessary goods, and not be designated as terrorists? It attacked Iraq's so-called nuclear weapons plant many moons ago, and recently attacked a Syrian building.
And the USA's reaction, it offers Israel a few more billion dollars for its effort snd remains mute. Makes one wonder just what a country has to do in order to be placed on the TERROR list. Well, as they say, the pot can't accuse the kettle.
Is the US held hostage by Israel? Frets of, or being blackmailed? That's who is really running this country.
The photo evidence presented to Congress and made public proves that the Syrian site was a reactor similar to a North Korean plutonium production reactor at Yongbyon. The photos do not prove that the reactor was was about to become operational and some evidence suggests it was far from that point. There is also no evidence of a Syrian nuclear bomb program other than the reactor, but this type of reactor has no other plausible purpose than to make plutonium for weapons.

...Israel bombed what they thought was a nuclear facility, ...releasing plutonium and nuclear waste into the civilian environment, poisoning the people and the land in perpetuity? ...'
Absolutely correct, and I thank you for reminding me of what a high-ranking Russian general stated in a paper I read in late 2001 in which he stated that if "the terrorist" wanted to kill a hundred million Americans, they would have the hit nuclear power plants they flew past in lieu of the NYC.
Which also means they are prime targets and should be dismantled for that reason alone!
I would hate to see Cuba having a nuclear power plant, for exactly that reason, it would be attacked covertly by US war criminals and poison the island and kill the population. Likewise with forces of nature, enhanced or not by HAARP.
So, luckily that did not happen, the Inside Job - with foreign assets, conducted a psychological warfare operation, not an act of total war.
So, could it happen? Perhaps, but there has been no will, and the way would be harder. Yet, the Israelis do these things, as if it were their right of self-defense, and that is how they rationalize in wanton inhumanity they are plaguing the Palestinians people with and have been before the holocaust began.
The stockpiles of depleted uranium in tonnage is astronomical - 800 million tons of something! If, that site(s) were hit and that crap sit ablaze it would be beyond comprehension and containment and spell the end of life in the USA and as goes the air currents, life on Earth. Volcano spew dust into the upper atmosphere and circumnavigate the Earth, so will, does DU in fact, knowingly with pre-mediation. So, insanity is the end product of absolute power, and it will kill us all, playing God, who is alleged to have the same idea in mind if we are to believe any of that mythology.
The real truth is that Iran and Syria are, along with North Korea, trying to find alternatives to oil for energy and the oil barons who run the world are using our military (and Israel's) to prevent them. Its a case of the drug dealer (oil) protecting his turf by any means including murder, lies and deception.(fly-by bombings)
Israel is the only country in the Middle East with nuclear weapons...no one is inspecting them! People that's what we need to be screaming about the damn double standards. God I am sick of these neocons!

Fed Up With ....
I agree, something that happened during a WORLD WAR over 63 years ago I wasn't even born as I am sure many people who post on this site. It is an interesting time in HISTORY and that is all it was. A long long time ago in a world that was at war.....
Josh @ 1:07 pm:
'The current "revelation" may be part of a last-ditch effort by Washington to scuttle the Israel-Syria peace negotiations.'
Thanks for the link, Josh. I assume the revelation is also an effort to scuttle the 6 party agreement with North Korea--that's long been part of the neo-con agenda. For the neo-cons, it was a two-fer.
It's time that the western nations stop giving Israel a free pass. What happened during the holocaust was tragic, but the Nazis paid for their war crimes. What is happening now to the Palestinians is also tragic, but the Israelis are not paying for their war crimes. It's time they stopped hiding behind the holocaust to commit their war crimes, and it's time we stopped sending US taxes to Israel to fund their war crimes. The Occupation should become a national discussion, since we are funding it. That is the center of the Middle East storm, and nothing can be resolved until the Occupation and illegal settlements end.
OK now go out and vote for one of the 3 future Prez all have said they will protect Israel at all costs.
Like I have been saying people no change no matter who you put in the WH.
THe only way to stop it is to vote AMERICA FIRST not second to israel as is the case right now.
When Israel bombed the Syrian facility last fall, at least one expert went on the record to say that it's not a nuclear reactor at all. See my article at

I am trying like crazy to locate a CD article from late last year that claimed it was US planes which covertly conducted the bombing. Does anyone remember something like that?

pictures from Syria? prove it.
termite - IF the site was a reactor site, supposedly it was struck before the fuel was brought in. www.talkingpointsmemo.com did a lot of updates to their reporting as new threads came in, and apparently there is no evidence of fuel going in to Syria. There are so many strange twists and turns to this story. Some indeed horrific, some so funny I fall off my computer chair. Hilary's late night obliteration either makes everything worse, or funnier. Mundo Bizarro.
For a full list of those who are destroying this nation and spreading threats around the ME can be found below. The egregious and treasonous actions by the enemies within the bush administration represent a clear and present danger. They should all be shot or deported as their supporters in congress.

Now Israel has planned to bomb Iran's alledged Nuclear Facilities......Bush, Cheney, and the NeoCons Gang will attack Iran in the Fall probably early October.
Expect massive Air strikes from Iraq and our Aircraft carriers in the Persian Gulf. .Secretly Aircraft and missles are being stocked piled in Kiwait and KSA. .The only place to draw ground-troops from is Iraq.
Our U.S. Military is broken and our Economy is bankrupt.
.....Why is the United Stated of America, illegally waging wars in the Middle East ?????????????
WHO is pulling the strings?????????
WHO is profiting by the U.S. Troops dying in the Middle East????????
WHO is really running the U.S. Government ???????????
.
when will someone will bomb israel nuclear facilities? or denounce them to the UN? Because we know thwy have weapons of mass destruction.
Ummm...Am I understanding this correctly? Israel bombed what they thought was a nuclear facility, without any notice or negotiations, thereby releasing plutonium and nuclear waste into the civilian environment, poisoning the people and the land in perpetuity? I hope I'm misunderstanding this, but if mine is an accurate description, could there possibly be a more heinous crime committed by a government? To poison land forever and cause hideous diseases among a populace? And there was no global outcry? Please tell me I'm wrong!
Well,
Look at the geography of Syria and Iraq. It would make a nice location for an oil terminal in Syria under US Control, after the liberation of course. A a Halliburton Const. Non Bid of course to build a pipeline to the Med. Let's see how history pans out.
Its almost like a neighborhood squabble. Syria tried to get a sneaky Pete turn-key reactor or medium range missile program, or some other weapons system from N. Korea, and Israel "opened a can of whoop-ass on 'em". Now its a non-event.
The other neighbors don't have to know exactly what happened. They just have to know Israel is watching and will kick their butts, too. Including (it would be a stretch) Iran's.
The powers that be really need to keep Israel and Iran out of each other's hair. Something could happen that both countries and all their neighbors will regret for years. Maybe hundreds of years.
Israel's SHIN BET has the responsibility of hiding the over 1,000 nuclear missles that are aimed at Syria, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, and KSA.....This Super Secret group of assassins guard the Nuclear Reactor Complex at Dimona in the Negev Desert. Plus a dozen other hidden Nuclear Research and manufacturing facilities inside Israel.
Why isn't the United Nations occupying and disarming the Zionist Threat to the lives of the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Southern Europe???? .These madmen threaten the whole planet. Remember many of the parts were made in the U.S.A. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
.
I just completed reading an article by Yochi Dreazen in the Wall Street Journal which deals with proof the U. S. now has that Iran has been supplying weapong to al-Sadr's military to fight al-Maliki's forces (as well as the U. S.)
The article says that they have date stamps on them indicating when they were manufactured and it proves that Ahmadinejad lied when he denied supplying these weapons.
The first point I would like to make is if we joined in to support al-Maliki's forces on his "Basra Bowel Movement" and we are indeed the U. S., why does Iran have any LESS RIGHT aid in training al-Sadr's forces and/or supplying weaponry.
A relative calm in Iraq has been attributed to al-Sadr's calling of if not a truce, at least a ceasefire Iraq's Prime Minister screwed that up on 3/25 with his personally led attacks
(which Patreaus & Crocker were aware of on 3/21). They were instructed by Cheney to let it proceed and let al-Maliki fall flat on his face (which he did). Then Patreaus could go to Congress the following week and say we can't withdraw any more troops at this time.
Finally, doesn't anyone stop and question why this little runt (Ahmadinejad) who won't admit to his country's involvement in one side of the Iraq fiasco, is someone we are to believe is going to attack Israel.
Not wanting to bring our domestic politics into this but I have to admit I was highly amused by Hillary Clinton's rant on the eve of the Pennsylvania primary.
She was assuring voters that she would attack Iran if they attacked Israel. Who doesn't know that IF she did get elected president, and IF Iran developed the nuclear capability of attacking Israel and did so, Israel could wipe them out before she got her "3 a.m. phone call".
No, thank you, Hillary. If I want to see an imitation of John McCain, I'll watch Darrell Hammond on Saturday Night Live.
I watched part of the CIA prepared video of the "photos" from the "reactor site," except as far as I could tell all they had in the video was text and a voice over of a computer animation that provided very sketchy information and no proof whatsoever of anything.
Complete rubbish in my opinion.
Our contempt for International Law, Treaties and other nations has reached a new low.
I wonder where our standing in the world would rank now? At the level of Russia under Stalin?
Comparisons with Hitler or Attila are impossible.
Will any Republicans be elected in November? Will more Republicans switch to the Democratic Party before then? Hey, don't laugh, some have done it in California, it would now be unfair to name them, they are the smart ones, unready to retire and willing to help the country they, and us, love so much: The United States of America
While this administration can hardly tie its shoes without tripping on its face, the same cannot be said of the Israelis. They are many things, some of them not so attractive, but they are not stupid and the Mossad is the most effective intelligence service in the Middle East. Since they put ordnance on the site, likely there was something there to be bombed. What that something was, we may never know.
Bashar Assad has not been in power that long and Haffez certainly had some nefarious dealings with some pretty odious people. It would not surprise me if some of the dealings his old man had started ages ago are just now coming to fruition - Like a North Korean reactor (not something you just pop into the old K(amel)-Mart and pick up). A nuclear plant is the definition of a long-lead item.
And Seymour Hersh's piece in the March 5, 2007 "New Yorker" as well.
It seems to me that Cheney/Bush/Lieberman et al. are in a big hurry to eliminate or neutralize all the members of the "Axis of Evil." It needs to get done before the end of Bush's term, I would guess. When Cheney traveled to the Middle East last month, he urgently requested that Turkey help us in an attack against Iran. Now, we see "proof," "PROOF," I tell you, that both Iran and Syria want nuclear weapons at their disposal. Just as we saw "proof" of Saddam's WMD.
The clumsy lying is completely reminiscent (sp?) of the run-up to our invasion of Iraq. It would be funny except that the ugly reality of what could happen actually could happen.
Anyone who really wants to understand this needs to read Seymour Hersh's piece in the "New Yorker"
http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/02/11/080211fa_fact_hersh?currentPage=1
When that building (or whatever it was) was bombed, I couldn't understand why the Syrian gov't didn't raise holy hell about it, since everyone seemed to agree that Israel did the bombing.
Does anyone here know if Syria ever made a protest about this to the UN, or issued a statement of outrage, or SOMETHING?
Mysterious...
Another curious aspect of the timing of the US release of this "information" is that in the past week or so back channel peace negotiations between Syria and Israel have become publicly known. Cheney, Elliot Abrams and the other neocons have been working to scuttle such talks and pressuring Israel to desist from negotiations with Syria. See
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/829441.html
The current "revelation" may be part of a last-ditch effort by Washington to scuttle the Israel-Syria peace negotiations. First, if Syria is cooperating with fellow "Axis of Evil" member North Korea on WMD, it makes it more difficult for loyal US ally Israel to proceed to open peace-oriented dialogue with Syria. Second, it makes it more difficult for Syria as focus on Israel's bombing of the country may tend to force the Syrian gov't to take a public stance that is "tougher."
Sounds like people need to wake up to the fact that bombing nuclear facilities makes you a terrorist.
Another Israeli Spy Arrested In America.
Three Days Later This Israeli/Cheney Diversion For MSM.
That is the likely logic of the timing*
Note: This observation courtesy of Juan Cole this AM in Informed Commment.
More war propaganda from paid neo-cons. Believe nothing that emanates from the Bush administration.
Yeah how strange they waited so long to reveal this. Hmm---just the type of thing you would bring up if you were planning an attack in the area(since most Americans cant tell the difference between Iran and Syria).
The Director General deplores the fact that this information was not provided to the Agency in a timely manner, in accordance with the Agency's responsibilities under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), to ENABLE IT TO VERIFY ITS VERACITY and establish the facts," ElBaradei's office said
THAT IS THE POINT...it took 7 months for Cheneys office to photoshop the pictures into something resembling a reactor....its not like the Bushies have ever given us bad intell before...
Actually, I think the pictures look more like a Syrian Walmart than anything else.
Or maybe it was a new factory to build mobile chemical labs and unmanned drones for Iraq....
