Petraeus Promotion Frees Cheney to Threaten Iran
WASHINGTON - The nomination of Gen. David Petraeus to be the new head of the Central Command not only ensures that he will be available to defend the George W. Bush administration's policies toward Iran and Iraq at least through the end of Bush's term and possibly even beyond.
It also gives Vice President Dick Cheney greater freedom of action to exploit the option of an air attack against Iran during the administration's final months.
Petraeus will take up the CENTCOM post in late summer or early fall, according to Defence Secretary Robert Gates.
The ability of the administration to threaten Iran with an attack both publicly and behind the scenes had been dramatically reduced in 2007 by opposition from the former CENTCOM commander, Adm. William Fallon, until he stepped down from the post under pressure from Gates and the White House last month.
Petraeus has proved himself willing to cooperate closely with the White House policy lines on Iraq and Iran, arguing against any post-surge reduction in troop strength policy and blaming Iran for challenges to the U.S. military presence. Along with the deference to Petraeus in Congress and the media, his pliability on those issues made him the obvious choice to replace Fallon.
But Petraeus had already effectively taken over many of the powers of the CENTCOM commander last year.
As the top commander in Iraq, Petraeus was in theory beneath Fallon in the chain of command. But in reality Petraeus ignored Fallon's views and took orders directly from the White House. Petraeus was in effect playing the role of CENTCOM commander in regard to the twin issues of Iraq and Iran.
Fallon clashed with Petraeus repeatedly from the beginning of his command about the surge and U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. Fallon opposed the surge and believed the U.S. should begin the withdrawal of most of its troops from Iraq. But he was effectively stymied by the close Petraeus-White House link from being able to influence U.S. military policy in Iraq and the region as a whole.
Fallon had also pushed very hard, according to a source familiar with his thinking, for trying to negotiate an agreement with Iran over innocent passage through the Strait of Hormuz in order to ease tensions caused by the U.S.-Iranian differences over the obligations of navy vessels transiting the Strait. But any such negotiations would have conflicted with the administration's emphasis on confrontation with Iran, and they weren't interested.
Petraeus revealed in his Congressional testimony Apr. 10 that he had already assumed some of the functions normally carried out by the CENTCOM commander in regard to relations with military leaders in the region. Petraeus said he had "actually gone to a couple of neighbouring countries in an effort... to get at the networks, the countries in which they operate, and the sources of some of these foreign fighters."
In fact, the Associated Press reported, Petraeus had taken trips to five different Middle Eastern countries -- Jordan, Kuwait, Bahrain, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates -- since September 2007. That should have been Fallon's job, but the White House had apparently made it clear they wanted Petraeus -- not Fallon -- to undertake missions.
It had become increasingly evident to Fallon that he was not really running things at CENTCOM, according to the source. Fallon's frustration about Petraeus' de facto power over Middle East policy was the main reason he was ready to step down.
But it was Fallon's refusal to accept the that the option of a military strike against Iran was still effectively on the table that led to serious tensions with the White House, as reported in Esquire magazine in early March. Fallon had evidently angered Cheney by suggesting publicly on three occasions between September and late November that a military strike against Iran had been ruled out by Washington.
Fallon's resignation announcement on Mar. 11 was followed less than a week later by a 10-day Cheney trip to the Middle East in which the vice president talked explicitly about the military option against Iran during visits to Turkey and Saudi Arabia. That suggested that Cheney felt freer to wield the military threat to Iran with Fallon neutralised.
Cheney aggressively solicited political support from Turkish leaders for a U.S. strike against Iranian nuclear facilities during his visit to Turkey last month, according to a source familiar with Cheney's meeting in Ankara.
Cheney was "very aggressive" in asking Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul, as well as Turkey's chief of general staff Gen. Yasar Bukyukanit to get "on board" with such an attack, according to the source, who has access to reports from the Cheney visit.
Cheney indicated that Turkey had been added to the trip at the last minute, suggesting that the decision to visit Ankara was linked to the Fallon resignation.
After the meeting between Cheney and King Abdullah on the same trip, Saudi sources let it be known to the media that Abdullah had told Cheney that his government opposed any U.S. military strike against Iran. That suggested that Cheney had brought up the military option in Ryadh as well.
One of Cheney's main objectives on the trip appears to have been to get the message to Iran that the option of a strike against its nuclear facilities is still very much alive.
In an interview with Cheney while he was in Ankara, ABC News reporter Martha Raddatz commented, "[W]hen you come over here, people in the region start thinking you're over here to plan some sort of military action."
Cheney strongly implied that it was indeed the major objective of his trip. "Well, I think the important thing to keep in mind," he said, "is the objective that we share with many of our friends in the region, and that is that a nuclear-armed Iran would be very destabilising for the entire area."
Petraeus has become the primary administration spokesman for the argument holding Iran primarily responsible for the Shiite military resistance to the U.S. occupation of Iraq. Petraeus and his staff developed the idea in early 2007 that Iran was using so-called "special groups" of renegade Mahdi Army fighters to wage a proxy war against U.S. forces.
In his testimony before Congressional committees earlier this month, Petraeus declared that what he called the "special groups" allegedly organised and manipulated by Iran "pose the greatest long-term threat to the viability of a democratic Iraq".

Show AllWhy does every thread about the crimes of Cheney et al always turn into a "I'm going to vote for XYZ" discussion? As if who you're going to vote for means ANYTHING. Don't you see what's happening here? The US has turned into the 21st century equivalent of Nazi Germany and we're all being Chamberlains.
Glenn Goodman has rightly said here what Obama should have said. Bitter citizens ignored by their government leaders turn to television-- not necessarily guns and religion.
Each generation mythifies its culture and history through its own means. Just so we don't think too much. Or take any necessary action. Citizen, numb thyself...bitterness shall pass.....
General Petroleum.
Handwriting's all over the wall. Petraeus is still standing because he will do whatever Bush wants. Bush has fired every commander who tried to tell him the truth. It's clear Bush doesn't want the truth, he intends to create a crisis - an October surprise that will drive the sheep into the Republican corral. It will probably work, given the proclivities of the mass of voters to jump when poked.
Look at Pennsylvania. Almost 60% of voters thought Hillary was unfairly attacking Obama, and a similar number think she's dishonest and untrustworthy, but she still got 55% of the vote, although not according to the exit polls. Oh, that's right, unlike the rest of the world, exit polls in this country are unreliable. Yeah, right. Our entire political process is rotten. Democracy? I say it's history.

They don't call him "General Betray-us" for nothing.

The youth must stop fighting this war now.

And the pressure must be applied to Obama and Clinton. Do not vote for either of them if they will not stop supporting an attack on Iran as an option this nation can afford to consider.
Vote for the REAL anti-war candidates, such as Cindy Sheehan in San Francisco; Cynthia McKinney and Ralph Nader for President - any any progressive candidate regardless of party affiliation. Vote outside of the duopoly.
Congress needs to impeach Cheney and Bush; that would put an end to this nonsense.
As for voting for Nader... didn't you learn anything from the last time around?

ONE VERY REAL POSSIBILITY THAT THE US WILL PREEMPTIVELY ATTACK IRAN!
The headline of this article seems to say it all.
The "retirement" of former Centcom commander Navy Adm. William Fallon who openly opposed an attack on Iran, and now the appointment of Petraeus, seem to eliminate some the the obstacles within the high-levels of the military community to an attack on Iran.
There appear to be many factors and elements in play regarding what is going on. Some dynamics are explored in the article:

Hey, Don't you see the news, Bush said that McCain is the next President, no matter who you vote for.
Impeachment is off the table, yet all military options - against Iran - are on the table. This shows why impeachment is so important in order to enable military personnel to refuse illegal orders.
How sad that Mrs. Clinton seems obsessed with continuing the insane policies of this administration, and of course McCain will too. Even a mild change of course seems too much to allow.
Has television melted our backbones?
I remember reading the report of an exercise that the US Navy did a couple of years ago.
In the exercise, one commander played the part of Iran, armed with speedboats and light commercial and civilian aircraft. He faced off against the rest of the exercise team playing the US Navy in the Persian Gulf.
The result?
Two weeks elapsed exercise time, and 70% of the US fleet in the exercise was sunk or crippled.
The Commander of the 'Iranians' had used guerilla and kamikaze tactics. And had factored in the use of the Iranian 'Sunburn' anti-ship missiles.
The US Navy response?
Ignore the outcome, reset the exercise, and gave the 'Iranian' commander orders to 'fight fair'.
Is anyone surprised? Be prepared, it's gonna get very nasty.
General Betrayus and Dickhead are wrong about Iran, as "little ass kissing chicken shits" and draft dodging bullies usually are when they are losing a war, a recess fight, or an election. They are unable to win Bush's War against the citizens of Iraq so they have to find someone else to blame for their failure. Shazzam, enter Iran. Blame Iran since obviously blaming "Al Quaeda in Iraq" didn't work because Sunni tribal leaders shut them down before the infamous "surge". Blame Iran since we can't alienate Turkey because we need them for air bases and they help keep the Kurds from really going after an independent state that would encompass parts of Turkey, Iran, Syria, and Iraq at a minimum. Blame Iran since obviously some shabby shady young mullah named Sadr couldn't possible be strong enough to defeat the Iraqi Army, the remaining few Brits, and the US military in Basra all by himself. Has anyone in the administration or the US Military really sat down and seriously contemplated what it would be like to have to fight a real battle with the Madi Army and the other 3 million Shites who live in the alleys and garbage filled streets of Sadr City? That is the military's worst nightmare and it is where Dickhead and Betrayus are currently warming up for their bombing devastation of Iran. October surprise, you bet. Declare martial law and cancel the election? Now there is an interesting question we need to be debating.
Remember the term "October Surprise". Cheney has already told everyone in an ABC News interview that he does not give a shit what anyone thinks. Expect an attack on Iran about a month before the election. As for impeachment. Do you really think anyone is going to try to start proceedings this late in their term? Get real. As for Nader. What last time are you refering to? 2000 or 2004? If you are talking about 2000, let me ask this, in what other country that holds elections does the person who comes in second place win the election? Stop it already with the Nader bashing, it's old and tired and just proves that you can't wrap your pea brain around anything. Stop throwing all your eggs in the Democratic Party's basket and vote for people who are serious about ending war and not just paying lip service to it.
The day the US declared war on Iran
By John McGlynn
March 20 is destined to be another day of infamy. On this date this year, the US officially declared war on Iran. But it's not going to be the kind of war many have been expecting.
http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Middle_East/JD01Ak01.html
henryd: The biggest problem of the non-Republican population is that we are incapable of throwing all our eggs into any basket. This is precisely why we have this government.
I have wrapped my "pea brain" around the fact that there is no mathematical, theoretical, or theological indication that Nader or McKinney could win an election in November. That being said, throwing all our eggs into the Democratic Party basket at this point is all we have. You said it yourself, no person who comes in second place wins the election. SO rather than encourage votes for 2nd 3rd and 4th place, why not encourage solidarity in realistic terms?
Dick Cheney Murdered that Aptos lawyer that criticized him.
He shot-gunned his lawyer in the face.
Ugliness comes from within and his Satanic Countenance photographed above tells a trillion words.
Cheney Helped Orchestrate 9-11.
Cheney is Israel's Man. (Or, if not, then, What is a Neo-Con?)
9-11. Iraq. A gutted Constitution. World War Three. STOLEN ELECTIONS
So What? F*** America, Sincerely, Dick Cheney (Coward)
"And the pressure must be applied to Obama and Clinton. Do not vote for either of them if they will not stop supporting an attack on Iran as an option this nation can afford to consider."
Without trying to sound snarky...who do you suggest a vote for if they do hold the position of attacking Iran? McCain?
I believe that Clinton will keep this option on the table, however, I also believe that given Obama's position initially on the attack on Iraq, he would be the least likely of the two to initiate an attack on Iran.
What I meant by saying the person who comes in second place wins the election is that in 2000 Bush came in second place and won the election!!! Check the official vote count. Stop directing your vitriol at people like Nader and those who support him and take a long hard look at a system that allows a runner-up to win the election. And the precise reason we have this government is because there is too much money involved in the whole electoral process of which BOTH PARTIES ARE EQUALLY PART OF!! And that is exactly the way BOTH PARTIES want it to stay. Just check out the presidential debates. Any third party voices heard? Didn't think so. How can anyone know what Nader or Mckinney stand for if they are completely shut out of ANY discussion. Just think about all the people who don't vote. Don't you think if other voices are heard it might mobilize them to go to the polls. If that happened maybe they wouldn't be mathematically eliminated.
Devil1, I agree the freedom fighters in Iraq and Palestine will never lay down their arms, and if the little deserter moves against Iran he will have his chicken shit ass handed to him. The days of gun boat diplomacy are over, now every small country has the means to give every bully a fight to the bloody end.
Words for General Petraeus to ponder:
"Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan"
Jesus was offered all the kingdoms of the world and turned it down. This little turd, Petraeus, is selling his soul for a military pension.
How pathetic.
Good thing "we" haven't let on that an ant-crushing obliteration of Iran is in the works. "We" wouldn't them preparing for it or anything, with their Navy and Air Force and missiles and rockets and whatever other toys they got stashed away for a bomb-raining day...
Only "leaders" who PLAN ON LOSING telegraph their plans to the "enemy" a year or so before launching yet another illegal, aggressive massacre...
henryd, please know I mean no animosity at all. I understood your point about bush coming in 2nd and was using your words literally to make a larger point. I have no vitriol for Nader, but I understand those who do. I think he has done great things in the world of consumer advocacy, but I would have a lot more respect for him if he ran for office on his own merits, and put the time and effort into an actual campaign rather than a "none of the above" half-assed attempt to make a point in the 11th hour.
I agree whole heartedly that the current 2-party system is bunk. But now - in the 11th hour - is not the time to make any progress in that regard. That is a huge ship to steer, and money has already spoken. Our only hope for this minute is to get someone in office who isn't quite so indoctrinated by DC politics as usual. I personally believe that person right now is Obama. And I will participate in any grassroots movement for party system reinvention once we get Bushco, Inc and any relative politicos out of the White House.
I too will vote for a third-party, losing candidate who represents my loser's shabby values like life, peace etc etc. Call me a spoiler - if only it were true I could blackmail the Dem Party: "Either change your warmongering platform or I will select McCain."
But of course the Dem Party doesn't care, or maybe it's just not quite convinced that I really am a spoiler, that, in fact, the Dems believe they can win without my vote.
So it's up to us, more and more of us, to vote third-party until enough of us voting third party convince, finally, the Dems that we indeed are spoilers. That, really, should be our goal, and it is certainly my purpose in voting third-party: I want to spoil the election, I want to throw it to McCain, and I want the Dems to know it was my vote that did it.
Lots of people write paragraphs here revealing their great plans to overcome the totalitarians; but all those plans start out, " If everybody will...."
The trouble, of course, is that Everybody is never going to do Anything.
My plan is different. It only takes five percent of us to spoil the election. Not everybody, just you and me out of a crowd of forty.
In four more years, four more years of Bushism, maybe then they'll get the message.
AND YOU ARE PAYING HIS SALLERY!..YOU ARE PAYING CHENEY'S SALLERY..NOT THAT HE NEEDS IT..BUT HE GET'S SOME OF YOUR MONEY..AND THE BOMBS, THE ROCKETS...EVEN YES EVEN THE MERCENARY ARMIES OF "PRIVATE SECURITY" CONGLOMERATES...YEP...YOU ARE PAYING FOR THAT TOO...ALL OF IT..WHY?
WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?
FEAR MOSTLY THE REASON..MOSTLY!
BUT THAT IS ONLY YOUR RATIONAL.."IF I DON'T PAY..THEY'LL TAKE MY STUFF.."
OHHH...SO YOU DONT WANNA ACTUALLY MAKE ANY KIND OF...POTENTIAL..SACRIFICE..CAUSE THAT IS ALL IT IS...AND IF YOU JOIN US IN TAX STRIKE..WHAT ARE THEY GONNA DO? ROUND UP 10 MILLION AMERIACANS FOR SPEAKING WITH THEIR POCKET BOOKS? NOPE! AND THAT TOO WOULD BE, IN REALITY, A FORM OF "NON-VIOLENT PROTEST" IN THE GRANDEST AMERICAN TRADITION...BUT NOPE! YOU RATIONALIZE AWAY EVEN YOUR ONE ACTUAL POWER FOR TRUE CHANGE..THE POWER OF THE PURSE..
SO, GO AHEAD, BAIL OUT THE TELECOMS FOR SPYING ON YOUR EMAIL, ALLOW CHENEY TO PAY FOR ANOTHER ILLEGAL AND MOST LIKELY...END OF TIMES..WAR WITH IRAN...PAY FORTHE TORTURE..THE MURDER...YEAH..PAY FOR IT ALL...IGNORE THE TRUTH..PRETEND THAT YOU ARE NOT ACTUALLY RESPONSABLE..THAT WILL MAKE IT GO AWAY..YEAH RIGHT...
LIVE FREE OR DIE...I GUESS YOU HAVE CHOSEN DEATH..LOT'S O LUCK WITH THAT...
Bush co-opted Petraeus's tactics in the face the complete failure of his own "plan". How far Petraeus will go to please the Bush administration's ambitions are mitigated by the fact that he will want to keep this job with the next president. Alternative Radio did a show recently on US, Israel , Iran relationship and secret meetings between them. Also referenced was the present US policy concerning villainizing Iran as a way to influence Israeli elections towards the right. This policy was welcomed by the Iranian hardliners who were losing influence to moderates and the possibility of being pushed out an of a middle east peace accord and marginalized in middle east politics. We haven't heard much from Cheney lately, his blunders are more in the public eye.
Isn't it becoming perfectly obvious that all of this is leading to an American attack against Iran as we get closer to the upcoming elections?
That will give GWB the reason he has hinted at to declare martial law and cancel the elections - indefinitely. And it that seems Mr. Cheney is now paving the way.
King Bush will reign indefinitely!!!!! The detention camps that have been constructed throughout the United States will become filled with anyone who dares to speak against the new "United Regime of America." God help us!!!
Better yet, why not just BLOG about it until the problem goes away....
Get out in the streets or the world will pay!!!!
Take down Cheney NOW!

henryd,
You first say:
"Stop it already with the Nader bashing, it's old and tired and just proves that you can't wrap your pea brain around anything. Stop throwing all your eggs in the Democratic Party's basket and vote for people who are serious about ending war and not just paying lip service to it."
So here you are telling us that a vote for Nader will end the war if we get serious.
Now after a few skeptical comments on that from make it stop you ask: "How can anyone know what Nader or Mckinney stand for if they are completely shut out of ANY discussion. Just think about all the people who don't vote. Don't you think if other voices are heard it might mobilize them to go to the polls. If that happened maybe they wouldn't be mathematically eliminated."
It might mobilize some Nader supporters yes and since in every election he gets a fraction of the votes he got previously, He well need them badly but that won't End the war like you suggest. If the public can't hear them how can they end the war. We have a 2-party system so if you can't change the system (much more difficult than even winning an election) before the election how is a majority gonna vote for Nader?
One of Nader's problem is Nader is aloof to his audience and has posted articles here on CD but has never responded to any questions ...not my idea of a leader.
At least Gawar is honest about his wasted vote, He wants to Help McCain win to teach all of us "Pea Brains" a lesson.
Yeah Gawar, maybe we can end the war after McCain Dies. Great Plan!
I want to thank you both for clearing this all up for us.
Now vote for whoever you want because we now know where your at and that's why I don't care who you vote for.
Where is he going to get the troops? We either have the draft or outsource our military.
1. GWB is a religious fanatic who said that God told him to annihilate all islamic radicals off the face of the earth.
2. Ask any reservist coming home; the bombings runs have already been locked and loaded (programmed in); they're just awaiting the orders from the Commander in Chief (whoever the hell that may be).
3. It's been leaked all over the internet that the strikes will be nuclear. Iran may spin up their centrifuges to their hearts content; albeit, every ant hill to the surface will be completed contaminated from the fallout.
Reference former article at:
http://www.commondreams.org/views07/0120-22.htm
4. The troops are "occupying" a country not to fight a GWOT=global war on terror. They will be in position and used for the final prize - Syria and Iran.
Just follow the rhetoric on the media - a psych 101 degree isn't required to figure out what game is playing out. I think as kids we called it Chutes and Ladders:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chutes_and_Ladders
Read the part about rolling 'three sixes.'
I wonder if Dick realizes that if he attacks Iran, Lynne, Elizabeth and Mary will all be killed ? His health is down the crapper, but to sentence his entire family and grandchildren to a death sentence, what a bastard...
Maybe he thinks the money he has grabbed over the decades will protect them. 24/7 for 8 years - that's a lot of expensive 'protection'. Or maybe he still thinks War Criminals are untouchable. I guess if he keeps them all inside some 'undisclosed bunker' for 8 years, they might survive... But that will just make the Bush family more of a target. Again, what a bastard.
Of course, I wouldn't want to be within 100 feet of Karl Rove over the next 8 years, no matter *what* Dick does to Iran...
I'm just saying, this 'response' is probably on the table... I heard Iran has been infiltrating 10's of thousands of agents posing as Mexicans for 20 years. Turns out they were a tad pissed over the whole 26-years of-a-murderous-Shah thing. Also, getting Iraq to attack, causing 1 million casualties - also not appreciated... "Si, gracias" - that guy selling you a taco might be a trained munitions expert. "Que?" - the unsmiling dude trimming the tree might be a world class sniper. At least they work hard for low pay, until activated.
That table is getting mighty crowded.
No doubt that the theft of two elections and the absence of any impeachment hearings for obvious crimes has enabled Bush/Cheney to govern with absolute power. I would not be surprised if America did attack Iran and declare martial law to stop the blowback. Their political opponents who have been identified domestically through illegal political wiretaps would be rounded up and placed in the camps being built by KBR and guarded by Black Water. Another phony election will be held placing John McCain as President and the beat goes on.
I say Bush and Cheney are crazy enough to push the button.
And that is why Congress won't tempt or force them into doing that by Impeachment..... Congress can make speeches and push some paper around but not only do the Vampires have all the weapons, they don't give a shit what the people want with "God" (Satan) on their side.
The Congress will impeach for blow jobs if your a Dem getting blown, but for the heavy stuff, they are too afraid and in this case it may be a rational fear even though they deserve to be hung.
Now if they bomb up and running nuke plants in Iran, not only will they lose the war, but if any of that fallout hits Pakistan, India, China or Russia, they may send some fallout in ours and Israel's direction even before we get a chance to hit the streets and get mowed down.
I still think they are bluffing.... what other options do war criminals have?
We'll see... I hope
So, Kellog, Brown, and Root Inc, a subsidiary of Halliburton, was given a 385 million dollar contract to build "Detention Centers" throughout the United States in January 2006.
How many "Detention Centers" have been built so far??????
You don´t suppose that the "Power Elite" expects demonstrations!!! Without "Habeas Corpus" who is to say who gets "Detained"? And, who is on the 1 million person list of potential terrorists?
Hillary said, "I will obliterate Iran if they attack Israel!"
Gee, I have been reading a great book,"CIA, Joyas de la Familia" by Eric Frattini based on CIA documents released in 2007..........too bad the CIA went "Off Book" after The Church Committee discovered: the drugs, assassinations, tortures, murders, forced suicides.......We will never know the CIA´s connection to Al Qaeda, Osama Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein. They learned to destroy all evidence and we have had totally "Impotent" Congresses......
Human Rights and Democracy have no place in a Neo-Conservative´s Ideology, "The End Justifies The Means" and the Conservative Republicans and Democrats have gone along with "The Plan". World Trade Center #7 was a demolition with explosives and that means the rest of the activities of 9/11 had to have been an "Inside Job"...........
Iran will be attacked and the U.S. Congress will do nothing to protect the People of Iran....If 130 Mossad Agents were in the United States prior to 9/11, why can´t they execute a "False Flag" Attack against a U.S. Ship and blame Iran????
I predicted more than three years ago that the Bush (idiot) adminstration would start a war with Iran for Isreal and the oil. But Iran's military strength isn't like that of a weakened Irag army that didn't have any weapons to fight a war due to the fact of the sactions that were on them for more than a decade. And we still can't beat them. If Bush and Cheney start a war with Iran they should be hung for treason and stupidity. For the cowards that never fought a war and did everything they could to get out of the draft and the Vietnam war, they use our soldiers as pawns and don't give a rat's ass about them, it's easy for a jerk and coward such as Cheney to start a war. If he had to fight believe me, he would run away and go to canada to live rather than pick up a rifle and fight to defend democracy. He's making billions from the taxpayers of the U.S. with Halliburtan and all of its subsidaries and the oil wells and coal mines that he and old man Bush own that Cheney's greed and sickness show that he's a maniac. Where are the psychiatrists that need to lock him up in a nut house and get him away from normal people and the soldiers that are dying daily so he can steal billions of dollars from the taxpayers of our great nation. Or it used to be a great nation until Bush and his ignorant animals decimated the military and our economy. If the politicians or the military hierarchy are afraid to stand up to these demogogs and put them where they belong: six feet underground so us taxpayers can piss on their graves the people should stand up and take it upon themselves to get rid of the tyranny like George WAshington, Adams, Jefferson and the others that stood up to King George the III. When government overrides the taxpaying voters, that is tyranny and its time for the people to stand up and fight these lunitics. Of course that's just my opinion. I believe Bush and company have their tenacles so deep in the taxpayer's pockets and have brainwashed the majority, that its too late. People you better wake up and see what's happening before our country is completely torn apart. May God be with us, cause Bush and company sure aren't. Amen.
This is all American bullshit ! USA is not in any position to attack anybody !
in response...to the previous post...those in the know...know what is already planned....those who aren't in the know will find out soon enough. The History books will be written for your children and grandchildren. Now someone, reply...I hope we're all "living" wrong!!!

Amidst all the blather about who to vote for, these three quotes are the threads of political sanity here. If we do not sacrifice, and resist, and organize, and stop these war criminals, at great personal risk and with no guarantee of success, then they will not stop. Who here is actually making the argument that the electoral process, political parties, and political candidates in the USA are a viable means to stop this death march?
McCain's advisor/link to evangelical voter, John Hagee, says the US and Israel must attack Iran in order to make possible "God's plan for Israel and the West." Lieberman, Cheney, Bush, many members of Congress all buy into this bastardization of both Judaism and Christianity.
Petraeus has been Singing the Iran Song (bomb bomb bomb Iran) almost every day, ably handling a big part of the demonization phase of this exercise.
When ABC-TV asked Hillary Clinton the other morning what she would do if Iran attacked Israel with a nuclear bomb (ABC apparently buys into the propaganda also), she said she would "annihilate them." When Obama was asked the same question (on another network, I believe, and perhaps not with any reference to nuclear bombs), his answer was thoughtful and reasoned. He said he would "respond," but not before determining what kind of response was appropriate.
The Shi'ite majority in Iraq currently looks to Iran for direction and views Iran as its great friend and ally. Therefore, the fate of Iraq and Iran is now somewhat coupled. If we bomb Iran without legitimate provocation, the chance for any sort of political solution in Iraq that is brokered by us gets even closer to zero than it already is.
Since this is obvious, it follows that peace and security in Iraq is not an objective of the occupation. Were it important, the obvious move would be to stabilize Iraq first, then take out the infantile nuclear capabilities of Iran later. Even in the event Iran has weaponization ambitions, it is a fact there are many years off, 5 + at a minimum.
So, we have another tacit admission by Cheney that the occupation of Iraq has exactly zero to do with bringing any sort of stability to Iraq and setting up a functioning democracy.
Are there any members of the GOP that are capable of thinking these things through?
Cheney's always felt free to threaten Iran. He wants to take out North Korea too.

But no matter who is the Grand Poobah of this region or that forces, the US still lacks the ground troops to occupy Iran. Using General Shinseki's estimate for Iraq, multiply by 2 for Iran's larger population, plus some more because Iran is also larger then Iraq, and we end up something like 1.5+ million troops short. I know, I know, they'll just make it up with Blackwater contractors. Maybe Blackwater can subcontract with the North Koreans, they have excess military and a shortage of cash.
> I remember reading the report of an exercise that the US Navy
Guerilla groups had to schedule their 'surprise' attacks so as to not inconvenience logistics.
Apparently Iraq didn't get that memo.
Jim Glover, I am in no way endorsing Ralph Nader for president. My initial comments were about the likelihood of an attack on Iran this fall. I only mentioned Nader to defend him from an earlier comment. Why is it when "progressives" hear anyone endorse or defend Ralph Nader they seem to get their panties all in a twist? The man has done more good in his life than most of us put together so just leave him alone already. I did not want this to be a discussion about who we should all vote for this year. We need to deal with the fact that we are going to attack Iran and how we are going to deal with it.
I agree with Rich Griffin 100%. Vote outside of the Duopoly if you believe in real democracy. Americans must stop their quadrennial support of corporate candidates once and for all!
Make It Stop: SO rather than encourage votes for 2nd 3rd and 4th place, why not encourage solidarity in realistic terms?
Because there is no real solidarity within the Demok party. It's a totalitarian hierarchy. This was proven after the 2006 elections when the Demok Congress failed to impeach the criminals and call the troops home. This was proven year after year when the Demoks continued to take donations from monsters enslaving the population.
The people are looking for a way out of "business as usual". Progressives are lighting the beacon on the outside so the people can find their way out.
Hang Cheney on the White House lawn, imprison Bush for life without parole as a war criminal, court martial Petreaus on the same charges, and then don't vote AT ALL in November. Stop validating the whole corrupt scheme by lining up every four years to vote for the same disappointments, betrayals and lies that lead to nothing but war for the corporations. If voter turnout is 10 or 20%, maybe we irrelevant citizens of this criminal country can begin to organize something that might just work to restore democracy. Voting for corporate-sponsored candidates, because we're told every time we have no other choice, sure as hell isn't going to do it.
Nader is irrelevant. Nobody cares about his point of view. Democrats will vote for McCain in sufficient numbers to make him president. If a McCain presidency would be a disaster for the US then maybe that is the best to hope for. The Iranians will pay a price but the rest of the world would be better off. This country is a great danger to everyone and needs to be cut down to size. Perhaps the only way to do so is by military means. There seems to be no other choice left. The US compensates for its military incompetence with raw power. The US has always been militarily inferior and this is evident in Iraq and will be even more so with Iran. The US deserves a licking and I am beggining to hope for it. I am no longer bothered by the prospect of a McCain presidency. I am that BITTER.
