Probe Sought of Whether Israel Targeted Media Crew
NEW YORK - A leading human rights group called on Friday for an independent investigation into the death of a Reuters cameraman and other civilians in Gaza this week, saying Israeli forces may have targeted the media.
Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana, a 23-year-old Palestinian, was killed in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday while covering events in the enclave for the international news agency. He had been filming an Israeli tank dug in about 1,000 yards away.
"Human Rights Watch's investigations at the site found evidence suggesting that an Israeli tank crew fired recklessly or deliberately at the journalist's team," the New York-based group Human Rights Watch said in a statement.
Local doctors said on Thursday that tiny darts sprayed from a controversial missile used by Israel killed Shana, although Israeli forces would not say whether one of their tanks fired the fatal shot.
The last few seconds of video shot on Shana's tripod-mounted camera show the tank firing, then a midair explosion consistent with the burst of a missile.
Reuters previously reported that Shana's soundman, Wafa Abu Mizyed, was wounded in the arm and at least two teenage bystanders were also killed in the incident.
Human Rights Watch quoted the Palestinian Center for Human Rights as saying three bystanders were killed as they watched Shana filming. It identified them as Ahmed 'Aaref Farajallah, 14, Ghassan Khaled Abu 'Otaiwi, 17, and Khalil Isma'il Dughmosh, 22.
"Israeli soldiers did not make sure they were aiming at a military target before firing, and there is evidence suggesting they actually targeted the journalists," said Joe Stork, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.
"Israel should investigate these deaths and, if crimes were committed, hold to account those responsible."
Human Rights Watch said interviews with an eyewitness to the shelling, a resident in a nearby village and a journalist who arrived just after the attack, as well as camera footage taken by Shana, indicated there was no military activity by Palestinian militants at the scene of the attack.
An Israeli military spokeswoman has said she could not confirm a tank fired at the cameraman and could not comment on weaponry it might have used. She added that the army, which has expressed regret, hoped to cooperate with Reuters to study the incident.
Troops killed 17 Palestinians, including several civilians, on Wednesday after three Israeli soldiers were killed in clashes in the Hamas Islamist-controlled enclave.

Show AllGuess what nothing will come of this as hundreds of other investigations into Israels wrong doings.
Human Rights Watch: if you are a serious organization, please pursue this all the way. Don't drop it. Take it to broader organizations, keep up the press conferences, be a gadfly. This killing is only the tip of the iceberg, but it can become one more reason to support an international outcry against Israel's flagrant violations of international law and to push for boycott and divestment.
"Israel should investigate these deaths" - what an absurdity - shows you where Human Rights Watch is at. Boycott Israel!
Sadly, most American Jews regard any criticism of Israel, no matter how valid as anti-Semitism. I'm neither, Black, Asian, Hispanic nor Arab. I've criticized the governments of Zimbabwe, North Korea, Cuba and Libya. Nobody called me a bigot because of this. Yet every time that I criticize Israel, I get shouts of "anti-Semitism".
Just another example of how Israel gets away with murder. They have nothing to fear with American MSM. This will not be widely reported.
What we have seen before is that "Israel should investigate these deaths" To Guarantee that the "proper" retribution is exactedWhat is the going rate ?¿ One Israeli assassin is worth how many civilian's lives ?

If Israel investigates this, it'll again go away. After Rachel Corrie was killed by being run over by a bulldozer, it made the news, but when a they put on a play about it, very few theaters would allow it to be shown, and now the question is Rachel Who?
Investigations by Israel are a farce, nobody takes responsibility, nobody gets blamed except the victim, no financial damages are paid to the family.
I agree that this will go nowhere.
It seems that whenever someone gets too close to what is actually going on anywhere in the middle-east they get taken-out; killed, wounded, arrested, etc. Whenever someone is attacked that is not actually a reporter or camera crew, they're labeled as a militant, rebel, or insurgent, whether or not they actually are.

It's this sort of behavior that led to the Diaspora. I recall it was the rulers of Babylon and Persia that allowed the Jews to regroup and return. Gratitude?
When I was a Tanker (in the late-60's), and we wanted to shoot a journalist, we would use an American/'old-school' bee-hive round. The 95,000-or-so Darts within-it were in a Sabot-case --that separated about 100-yards from the main-gun, aligned themselves for point-forward flight about 150-yards away, then had an effective/spreading-range for reporters of about 200-700 yards.
Apparently, the air-bursting scatter-darts used by the Israeli's in Gaza have a much-longer or 'selectable' range?
[Wonder if they can kill a Reuters-guy, or innocent-bystanders, at 2,000-yards?]
This is "real progress" compared to our past Proxy-Wars...!
Well, the point's been made by folks who get up way earlier on Saturday than I do.
In this post-modern century, investigations and accountability are surds. I wish and hope that this ahistorical and inhumane approach will be reversed, but I'm not sanguine about the prospect.
If there is an investigation, and especially if the Reich of Zion conducts its own investigation, you may be assured that the results will be incomplete, equivocal, and entirely unsatisfactory to truth-seekers.
I can tell you right now that the event will be written off as a Merry Mixup. You know, just like the "accident" that killed Rachel Corrie.
"They couldn't stand the heat, so they blew him out of the kitchen." Sure brings sad memories of something similar that happened to 1960's LA news reporter, Ruben Salazar.
Another nail in the coffin...
Rachel Corrie was a big nail--her story lives and is portrayed world wide!
Israel doesn't need more military aid, she needs a psychiatrist!
Of COURSE they did...ISRAEL is a MODEL for the CORPORATE FASCIST THEOCRACY...that is why Der Junior and other "NeoCons" ("Cons" being the critical word here..) are so..in LOVE with Israel..because it is a MILITARISTIC, AUTHORITARIAN, THEOCRACY..WHICH VALUES OTHER HUMAN LIFE ABOUT AS MUCH AS IT VALUES INSECT LIFE..AND REMEMBER..THEY ARE AFTER ALL..THE "CHOSEN PEOPLE"
When will this HYPOCRACY end?
When will these Organized Religion States begin to actually ACCOUNT for the attrocities that they commit in the name of their "God"...for example..IF JESUS CAME BACK, AND SAW WHAT THE REPUBLICANS AND THE RIGHT WING ARE DOING IN HIS NAME....HE WOULD NEVER STOP THROWING UP...
Religion is becoming the TRUE EVIL AMONG HUMAN BEINGS ON THIS PLANET..FROM THE BTK KILLER, A DEVOUT CHRISTIAN, TO THE SPANISH WIPING OUT ENTIRE CULTURES..THE VARIOUS MURDEROUS FACTIONS OF ISLAM...AND EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN..ORGANIZED RELIGION IS CAUSING THE END OF THE WORLD...FOR NO REASON AT ALL..I BELIEVE THIS..YOU BELIEVE THAT..SO I'LL KILL YOU!...HMMM..SOUNDS LIKE A WORTHY CAUSE..LET'S JOIN UP..AND THEY ARE TAX EXEMPT...HUP! HOW BOUT THAT...CAN YOYU SAY "REPUBLICAN SLUSH FUND"?
It has gone too far..time to rid ourselves of the INFLUENCE of religion in POLITICS..not religion itself...very important..but ORGANIZED, POLITICIZED RELIGION is..EVIL...PERIOD! And must be rooted out..bleached...or at least hosed down...you know..how about the "Water Cure" for all organized religious zealots?
"Faith" yeah RIGHT! more like.."Death"
LIVE FREE OR DIE!
Do not fear the falsely hurled accusation of anti-Semitism. Zionists are fundamentalist extremists and little different than other fundamentalist extremists. Violent extremism carried out by Israel and supported by the United States condemns both. The fog is lifting and clarity is being established. The ego driven killers and their corporate media partners are being exposed ever more frequently. There is a tidal wave of revulsion stalking them. They face a future of disgrace and shame.

The "Reich Of Zion" - very appropriate
Wondering when Rachel Corrie's name was going to come up.
The US is no better when it comes to accidentally on purpose killing reporters.
And the electricity on Gaza is so precarious it is hard to get the story out on blogs.
What is it that they don't want reporters knowing about!
Didn't the KGB used to do similar stuff?
On a related Note, Aljazeera has change the name on all their "Frontline USA" videos to "Inside USA."
This is the one about the Israel Lobby (notice how they don't refer to it as the "Jewish" lobby - because there are Jewish organizations who are against what is going on in Gaza.

Its gall, chutzpah. Israel and its supporters regard jewish suffering as superior to all others and they link Nazi camps to Israel. To aatck Israel even when it massacres innocents is to damn jews to the gas chambers.
A jew is worth 4 times as much as an arab and 2 times as much as a gentile.
That's how they think.
It doesnt matter whether you show them jewish blood and arab blood and a dog's blood and point out that it all looks the same.
The jews arent the only ones to show this sense of surpremacy but its among the most audacious--they can kill 100 arabs and say: why are you victimizing us?
The Bendib cartoon comes to mind. 2 children standing by a Jerusalem sign.
Boy 1: Hi, I am a jew from Ethiopia.
Boy 2: Hi, I am an arab from here.
Boy 1: What are you doing here--in my country?
That chutzpah.
"...although Israeli forces would not say whether one of their tanks fired the fatal shot."
See,SEE!
It could have been a Hamas tank.
(I caught a rerun of THE SOPRANOS on my tv last night. It looked to me as if one of the Soprano family members deliberately murdered another fellow.
I think that that Tony Soprano should investigate this and hold whoever committed this murder accountable...I realize the programme is fiction, but sometimes we can get real life insights out of fiction.)

i searched for that story. i found it at the austin statesman newspaper. www.statesman.com it does say he was an fbi target and that he was a peaceful activist. it also says his hands and legs were bound and he had tape over his eyes. and yes they are suspecting suicide...............apparently he must have carried these things in his car to bind his limbs and cover his eyes.

Kelmer, sure that is their propaganda, but I don't think that Israel treats their citizens all that much better than they treat their neighbours. As long as the citizens of Israel are afraid of the Palestinians, they won't be focused on domestic affairs, so it serves the government of the day to keep riling up the Palestinians.
Did anyone catch Naomi Klein at the first conference of the Association of Concerned Jewish Canadian (ACJC)? She had lots to say about Israel:

Israeli attacks kill 19, including Reuters cameraman
The Reuters cameraman, Fadal Shana, 23, apparently was killed along with two bystanders in an airstrike in the same area, according to his colleagues and medics.
Cameramen who rushed to the scene said they saw the Reuters jeep on fire, and Shana's body lying next to the jeep, alongside other casualties. They said Shana's jeep was marked as "press" and that the cameraman was wearing an identifying flak jacket.
As colleagues rushed toward Shana, another missile was fired, said Wissam Nassar, a photographer with the Maan news agency. "There was an airstrike. We were thrown back, myself and another person."
Reuters Editor-in-Chief David Schlesinger called for an investigation.
"This tragic incident shows the risks journalists take every day to report the news. All governments and organizations have a responsibility to take the utmost care to protect professionals trying to do their jobs," he said in comments posted on the company's website.

Gaza fighting kills 20 Palestinans, including news cameraman
In the day's deadliest attack, an Israeli helicopter fired four missiles at targets near the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, witnesses said. At least 12 Palestinians, including five children aged 12-15, were killed, said Dr. Moaiya Hassanain of the Palestinian Health Ministry.
Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana was killed while filming Israeli tank movements, apparently in an air strike in the same area. Two bystanders also died.
Other cameramen who rushed to the scene said they saw the Reuters jeep on fire, and Shana's body lying next to it. They said his jeep was marked "press" and that the cameraman was wearing an identifying flak jacket.
As colleagues rushed toward Shana, another missile was fired, said Wissam Nassar, a photographer with the Maan news agency. "There was an air strike. We were thrown back, myself and another person."
Dozens of Palestinian journalists converged on the hospital where Shana was pronounced dead. Shocked, many still carrying their cameras, they wept and leaned on each other for support.
The Palestinian Journalists Union called a one-day strike for Thursday to protest the killing.

Seems that one of the problems in accessing this story is that, even the same news sources spell the 23 year old cameraman's name differently each time they report the story.
From Aljazeera:
Reporters caught in Israeli air strike
Among seven Palestinians wounded were two journalists caught in the missile strike on the Reuters vehicle.
Fadel Shana, a Reuters cameraman, regained consciousness in hospital.
He was also hit in the hand by shrapnel.
Sabbah Hmaida, who works for a local news website, was wounded in the legs.
The Israeli army said the vehicle was hit because it was acting suspiciously in an area of combat and had not been identified as belonging to the media.
Captain Noa Meir, an army spokesperson, said: "During the operation, there was an aerial attack on a suspicious vehicle that drove in a suspicious manner right by the forces.
"This car was not identified by the army as a press vehicle," she said.
"If journalists were hurt, we regret it."
The missile struck the vehicle after dark.
'Unacceptable'
The armoured car was clearly labelled as a media vehicle, with signs on all sides, including the roof.

Arms row over cameraman's death
A controversial weapon that fired metal darts from a tank shell killed Fadl Shanaa, a Reuters cameraman, as he was working in Gaza, doctors in the territory have said.
Several of the 3cm-long darts, known as flechettes, were embedded in Shanaa's legs and chest, a medical examination showed on Thursday.
The darts were also discovered in his flak jacket.
The 23-year-old was killed on Wednesday along with two youths who were nearby as he covered one of the bloodiest days in Gaza for a month in which 16 other Palestinians and three Israeli soldiers died during heavy fighting.
Shanaa had left the vehicle he was travelling in to film Israeli tanks when he was killed.
He captured footage showing a tank firing the shell that killed him.

Targeting journalists is part of war and politics, Israel does it as well as America, England, Russia and of course China (current Tibetan intifada). How else would they control information in a war zone. Let's see - one way is to imbed journalists (American propaganda) another way is to terrorize them (near misses) and the final way is to intentionally kill them. Daniel Pearl was not a tragedy, they made an example of him.
You can not make a good decision without information. Our concepts and perceptions are regulated by the information we are able to gather or infer. How do you think America got so screwed up in the first place? Media consolidation and marginalization of media sources on our public airwaves (cable is only cable to your house the still need satellite radio spectrum to move the signal from place to place).
Fox news is there for a purpose it provides an extreme reference point for people to compare other sources. Fox is the extreme that allows forces you to think that CNN and MSNBC are honest and unbiased sources of information.
Do yourself a favor and unplug your cable...
I guess they didn't like what I said it isn't posted.
I just said if you want change in America don't vote for a person who isn't 100% America first and only America. Libermans and the rest just don't vote for them, and that is how you start to make change.
Hollow point---your point is abit like your name. While I agree that it is abit strange that Liberman and others hold joint citizenship, clearly Bush and Cheney do not and while they are 100% American ( whatever the heck that means?) their deeds have been dispicable. In fact, the only 100% Americans are Natives Americans. So does that mean you would support Leeonard Peltier or Russell Means for public office. Or Winona LaDuke???? I sure would!
The United States of Zionism wins again.

I still can't get over that this was the second occasion that the Israeli army hit 23 year old Fadl Shanaa. The first time was near fatal but, over a period of months, he recovered.
________________
What frustrates me is that what we need to do about all this is hard work, but necessary. We have got to at the very least boycott all major mainstream news outlets; but more importantly we have to start creating our own non-mainstream outlets, support them with dollars and viewership (or listenership if it's talk radio), and build build build up our numbers. We have got to start supporting progressive culture (why hasn't everybody run to see "Body Of War"?). Why are we so defeatist? We CAN get this information out to the world (for me, the U.S., since that's where I live) - Israel has to be seen as a terrorist nation, and the palestinians need to be recognized as an occupied nation. We need to insist that our elected officials stop supporting Israel - I know it's hard, but it's necessary!
Put Americans first, how don't you understand that??
Cold blooded murder! Period!
I tried to post this on the story about torture, but THAT thread said I wasn't logged on. And it would not let me log on.
However, the following is still relevant:
The Republicrooks and the Demicrooks are in bed together. What do you suppose they are doing under the covers? If we apply not-so-long-ago history (the Bill and Monica Reality Show), shouldn't we just impeach all ot them?

Talking about Israel killing a reporter is like talking about Hitler or Stalin having a person killed.
Israeli soldiers: terrorists in uniform.
In the final run, the blame goes to the US and its European puppets that support Israel's murderous actions. The American and Israeli Zionists like to do their murders in the dark. These blood-sucking vampires cannot stand the light of day.
Let's not forget that the US bombed the offices of Aljazeera both in Afghanistan and Iraq. It was also in the report a couple of years ago that the US child president, the Bush-whacker, actually wanted to bomb Aljazeera's headquarters in Doha, but Bush's first British lapdog Tony advised against it.
Israel, like the United States, is regularly and routinely accused of atrocities, but never held accountable. Just consider the numerous United Nations Resolutions both countries have ignored and defied and the hundred plus more where they have been the only dissenting votes. Until the rule of international law is recognised and adhered to, we have no hope of ever becoming a "cililized" society.
There are far too many killings by Israel, with no militants as victims, to believe that killing civilians is not a deliberate part of Israeli policy.
Nothing new about IDF killing innocent people. IDF soldiers shoot people with impunity and without consequence. Remember, what's a few dead goyim in the grand scheme of Jewish supremacy.
