New Hampshire Rep Has Made Impeaching Bush, Cheney Her Mission
CONCORD - Rep. Betty Hall, D-Brookline, had plenty of company Monday in urging the state legislature to impeach President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
There was Daniel Ellsberg, the former military analyst who leaked the Pentagon Papers revealing the government's decision making behind the Vietnam War. He flew to New Hampshire at Hall's request to attend the impeachment rally in support of Hall's legislation.
"If they don't vote this bill in, they are not fulfilling the oaths they took as state representatives," Ellsberg said of the state's elected leaders.
"Impeachment is a tool that has not been used as often in our history as it should have been," remarked Ellsberg. "Congress is not going to do this on their own for whatever their reasons may be. This is a call to them to let them know people think an investigation should occur. There are things this administration needs to answer for."
Ellsberg was joined by left-wing activist and former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark in urging New Hampshire lawmakers to hold the executive branch accountable for the war in Iraq among other things.
Along with those liberal heavy-hitters were John Nichols, Robert Bowman, Phil Burk, John Nirenberg, Jon Kaminski and Dan DeWalt, all backing Hall's House Resolution 24 that calls for Bush and Cheney's impeachment. The resolution, set to be vetted at the Statehouse on Wednesday, is based on rules outlined in the Jefferson Manual of Parliamentary Practice, which states that the legislature of a state may initiate impeachment proceedings.
Bowman, former director of advanced space programs development for the Air Force during the Ford and Carter administrations, argued for the need to impeach.
"Never in our history has there been such a strong case for impeachment. The number of crimes committed by Bush and Cheney is staggering," he said.
"Impeachment would send a message to the people of the world that the American people do not support the evil that has been done in our name."
For Hall, the 87-year-old Democratic representative from Brookline, this is a process that she takes very seriously.
"I had a chance to stand for something back in 1973 when Eugene Daniel pushed for the same thing in regards to the Nixon White House, and I did nothing. That experience has haunted me ever since. It's time for me to take my stand and start the discussion on this issue," she said Monday.
"A lot of Americans are skittish about the term impeachment, but it is an important tool our forefathers left for us," Hall said. "It is a means of cleansing, something that can be used to find out the truth.
Mary Ellen Martin, who served as Nashua's state representative for 16 years, also attended the rally to offer her support for the legislation.
"What people need to understand is this is just the first step in the process," Martin said. "We are simply hoping this will open some eyes to the need for this investigation to occur."
"This resolution is about the search for truth and the importance of accountability in our government. We can't allow a new administration to come in thinking that what this previous one did is acceptable."
With elections in November however, the question remains what kind of impact the resolution would have, even if it were sent to Congress.
For Hall, the answer is simple.
"We have to set a precedent for our nation that we will not stand for this kind of administration in the future. It has to start now. Open government depends on free discussion. People need to see that the right thing is being done, and I believe this is the right thing to do."
While many supporters came out to Concord on Monday, critics are skeptical that the resolution will garner enough votes on Wednesday.
"I don't know if we'll prevail, but you never know. Anything can happen," Hall said.
"I'm not entirely sure it will happen, but it's worth doing," Ellsberg said. "This is a chance for some hearings with some real teeth to them. It might be late to start this process, but it's important that it's started nonetheless."
Pass or fail Wednesday, Hall and her supporters see a silver lining in the process.
"It will be worthwhile if it wakes people up to what's going on," Martin said. "It's certainly not a victory for anyone if the resolution is voted down, but if this can raise people's awareness about the importance of free government, then that is certainly something to be proud of."
Hall is just glad to have a chance to revisit the mistakes of her past.
"I'm 87-years-old; I have that sense of history now. I feel like this is something that could be really significant. I've regretted not standing up and raising my voice back in 1973 ever since. To have a chance to sort of make amends almost 30 years later means a lot."
"Win or lose this could have an enormous impact on how our state legislature looks at things," she said.
"The important thing is that this is calling for an open debate, and as long as we continue to discuss significant issues like this, I think we'll find we do the right thing more often than not."

Show AllOur leading Dem politicians have been remarkably consistent, refusing to do ANYTHING to impede this administration's Agenda from Hell, and failing to keep their oath to protect democracy. No matter what the issue is, the Dems consistently took care to ensure that any token opposition/legislative votes would be kept low enough not to actually obstruct Bush. Then, when it is too late to accomplish anything, they come crawling out of the woodwork in solid (if impotent) opposition, presumably with their post-Bush careers in mind. The Dem party leadership has failed America terribly, but we aren't supposed to notice that; "That was then, and this is now." After seven years, now they speak up? Are We the People really that gullible?
We, the citizens, have to remember to vote into office new candidates and put the encumbents out to pasture.
hmm this sounds fishy to me. You must be getting a kickback. I think WE, THE TAXPAYERS< need to remember how the current government is lying, stealing and cheating, and put a stop to it pronto, by impeachment. else we find our selfs in a stinking, 3rd world situitation right here in our own backyards. And send a clear message to the NEW FOLKS ON THE BLOCK, that the AMERICAN TAXPAYERS WILLNOT tolorate any lying, stealing, or cheating, or we, the taxpayers will kick there buts out also!!!
Either this congress is made up of a majority of neo-conservative co-conspirators masquerading as 'democrats' bent on bankrupting the treasury, dismantling our democratic republic, and using the Constitution (and all post-war treaties) as toilet tissue, or the majority of this allegedly 'democratic' congress are the victims of threats to their lives or those they love. Another possibility is that the majority is being blackmailed. Is it possible that the majority of our congress has such dirt on them that they would rather see the whole world crumble rather than come clean? As I recall, those 'Boys Town' and Congressional Page scandals were from the Republican side of the aisle.
There is only one other possibility I can imagine, but it is so completely incredible that it reeks of paranoid fantasy. It is so beyond the pale that I won't even mention it, except to say that it starts to look more rational with each passing day.
Whatever the case, this congress is aiding in the destruction of our democratic republic. As long as there are no answers we are left to our own imaginations. I was always one of those that snubbed their noses as 'conspiracy theories', but this is what happens when lies rule. The unknown is the domain of the imagination.
Our survival as a species depends on impeachment. These murderous thieves have seven more months to end life on earth as we know it. Impeachment, even if it goes nowhere, gives military personnel a small little more legal ground to stand on when they refuse orders to unleash nuclear catastrophe.
The next obvious step is to stop electing Republicans like McCain or Clinton.
Bushco? They need to be impeached and sent to the Hague for war crimes!
Throw out the GOP in the November elections and all of a sudden every dark and sinister act will be exposed. Hopefully the Constitution will also be restored, but at least the exposure of GWB/GOP excesses will make the over trusting realise that this administration has been a total disaster for American self interest.
"We have to set a precedent for our nation that we will not stand for this kind of administration in the future.
Rep. Hall picked a good mission. The top White House cannibals should be impeached now to restore the rule of law in Washington. We have a great progressive agenda just waiting to be implemented and the impeachment will open the flood gates.
Don't even consider whether you can win and gain an impeachment or not because believe it or not this is not about whether you win or lose.
This is about whether you called for impeachment or not, whether YOU approved of your representatives actions.
Now if the nation rises up and calls for impeachment and the Democrats and others say it is off the table they are then on the defensive and must explain to history why they were negligent in their duty.
The biggest challenge is not whether you can get the congressional votes; the biggest challenge is to see what the American people really care about.
We had the peace mom Cindy, and now the peace grandma! Good for her, another 87 years for her.
Impeach now! Its NEVER too late! Because the world cant wait!
I am very distressed by the comments posted here. The time has come when blame should be placed not on the Bush/Cheney administration those gangsters tried to get away with as much as they could and are still testing the limits.
The blame should be placed on the congress, the judicsiary, and the mass media, for not only aquiesing but also aidindtheir crimes while pretending to refute them.
The Democrats have been duplicitus and complicit, none of the three so called frontrunners have moved a finger or have spent a pennys worth of capitole to oppose these crimes, either they agree with them or they are just too weak to oppose them,in either case they are not fit to lead this country no less the world!
The USA is not a theocracy,an ethnisity,or a single race ,it is only the sum of its people who have agreed to be part of our CONSTITUTION as such we have been BETRAYED by our reprosentitives, who have committed treason to our country, and should be thought of as tratiors as well as well as being international criminals for having the power to stop international crimes and crimes against humanity not doing so,they should be brought before the ICC.
Have these congress critters been bought off,or have they been threatened ,which was the aim of the second terrorist attack of 2001 the Anthrax [ an american grade anthrax ]which as you may recall was sent to Democrats and the networks at which point the congress was closed and miracusley the patriot act was passed !
IMPEACH - INCAREORATE - IMPOUND ALL THEIR RECOURCES
By allowing the outrages behavior of the Bush administration to continue unchallegned our congress and our judiciary have left no place for our millitary or intelegence services to turn to !!!!!
shikejian,
Acting yesterday is not an option, as you well know.
Tomorrow? We'll gave to see whow things are when we get there.
Right now what we have is today, for better or for worse, so the issue is, is today really too late? We can't do everything all at once. (Someone once said "That's why God made time.") But we get to have some say in what happens now, the more so if a lot of people can agree on it.
I'm urging that impeachment has to happen now - since it can't happen yesterday. Bush's admission that he knew about and approved of the torture memos moves impeachment to the top of the things-to-do list, with a double asterisk. In the first place, his unapologetic admission represents a huge challenge to the Congress, the courts and the people, and letting it go by will have grave consequences, and second, this makes getting a whole lot of people to agree on acting around impeachment a lot more likely, if we can break through the noise and bring the issue into focus.
The U.S. House of Representatives must IMPEACH both George W. Bush and Richard Cheney ....... NOW !!!!!!!!
Yet another state has or is debating the
impeachment issue. Bush and Cheney already
have warrants for their arrest in Vermont and
I think Wyoming. Wouldn't it be lovely if both Bush and Cheney were arrested when they
attend the GOP convention in St. Paul,MN
Now? Only Now is the time to act? What nonsense. The "now" for when it was time to act was many years ago. Yes. A great gesture. But useful? Hey...it just sends the message that all sorts of shit can be heaped on the American people before they get off their asses and do something about it.
Let me say first, I never voted for a bush.I would Love to see them impeached,Let's show those two that there are consequences for their tyrannical behavior.two power hungry cowards who never served their country. Please Impeach them so history will show them for what they are. as it is i have no faith in this government.i have faith in my GOD and my GUN.

Ken Mitchell said: "Won't happen as long as Pelosi continues to rubber stamp Bush's policies. Wake up Nancy."
WRONG... this can happen if the NH Legislature votes in support of an investigation into impeachable offenses. They have the power to have an investigation started by our Representatives who keep using the excuse of not having enough votes "to waste their time on this issue".
potsdam said: "Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution requires a 2/3rd majority of senators present to vote to impeach.
Even if every democratic senator votes to impeach, it still is not enough. 67 votes are needed.
How then do we convince republican senators?"
We do not need the Senate to START impeachment proceedings. As for Democrats and others who think it is too late; if we do not start defending the CONSTITUTION right now then it will be too late. If we allow the excesses by this Executive Branch to go unchallenged we will be setting a course towards total Fascism. If our Representatives in the Judiciary call for impeachment they will be doing their jobs. Whether the Senate votes to Impeach should not be an excuse to avoid the investigation. Call Rep. Conyers at 202-225-5126 and urge him to defend our Constitution. As the head of the Judiciary Committee he has the power to start an investigation into impeachable offenses.
We MUST energize folks. Put verbal pressure on Republicons in the congress and WRITE
them via snail mail, PHONE them where they hide and hang out, create the urgency of
NOW as a famous senator recently said. Build up the warrior attitude, get a fire in your belly and let them know we want IMPEACHMENT ACTION, BOMBARD THEM!
Some of the words I have just read from you here are inspiring, COMMANDIING excellent!
Use your imagination, your resources to insist on the most important action we have ever
had the opportunity to influence. The Bush Cheney liars must be deposed!
You forgot Osama bin McCain.
It seems that the initials B/J are attention getting and actionable. It seems as if anything complicated: say, your "elected" governors commiting wholesale murder and theft and a host of civil crimes against the rest of us is too complicated to think about.
The only terrorists we need to worry about are Osama bin Bush and Osama bin Cheney! They are evil! Impeachment is too good for them!
Words commonly used with respect to impeachment of Cheney and Bush include "distraction." My question is this: Distraction from what? This is the main event, people. George W. Bush looked America in the eye on Friday as he spit on the Constitution he vowed (hand on his Bible) to uphold and defend. He. Is. A. Serial. Liar. For seven years, he has dared to up the ante on his outrageous actions and inactions because no one is trying to stop him. Does this make you angry? Does this make you bitter? What're you going to do about it? And yes, what am I going to do about it?
Right on Chris Horton! I, too signed the "democrats.com/impeach-for-torture" petition.
I also forwarded it to my family members and friends.
Rep Hall expressed my feelings precisely when she stated,"We have to set a precedent for our nation that we will not stand for this kind of administration in the future. It has to start now. Open government depends on free discussion. People need to see that the right thing is being done, and I believe this is the right thing to do."
Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution requires a 2/3rd majority of senators present to vote to impeach.
Even if every democratic senator votes to impeach, it still is not enough. 67 votes are needed.
How then do we convince republican senators?
Precedent is set in either action or in-action. The precedent for the current administration and all of its crimes was set in the pardon of Richard Nixon. If he had been held accountable things may well have been very different in our current daily lives. I say impeach Cheney and then move on to Bush. Impeach them!
Calling all CD readers!
It's time to act!
I received a letter from Democrats.com which is spot-on, and urgent, It began:
"On Friday, George Bush told ABC News he personally approved of the approval of torture - including waterboarding - by Dick Cheney, Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell and George Tenet.
'Yes, I'm aware our national security team met on this issue. And I approved.'
"In the wake of this shocking and appalling confession, we've come to a historic moment where every American - and every Member of Congress - must take a stand.
"Either you're for torture or you're against it. And if you're against it, you must support the only Constitutional remedy for a President and Vice President who commit war crimes: impeachment."
The link that followed,
democrats.com/impeach-for-torture,
contains a petition, which I signed. I added a note to our good but still somewhat cautious Congressman Jim McGovern, forwarded to my email lists, and did up as a letter to the local daily and the local alternative paper, which said roughly (I've lost the exact text):
"The time for holding back and making political calculations is over. It's time to step forward, sign on to the impeachment bills, to speak out loudly to the nation and to Central Massachusetts, and to call the people to action. It's time to be a leader, not just a representative. This is the clearest statement from Bush that he is not bound by the Constitution, US law, international treaty law or common decency, but can and will do whatever he wants. If Congress won't challenge him now, then he has a free hand, with no limits. Obama is talking about prosecuting him and his cronies after the election, which is great, but if we don't call Bush and Co. on this now, right now, there may not be a next election.
"The call for action on impeachment must link this issue to the people's growing anger, and yes, bitterness, over his neglect and abuse and his (and Congress's) failure to deal with our growing distress, over foreclosures, bank abuse, loss of good jobs, the collapsing access to health-care, the collapsing pension system, the Katrina response, the tax ripoff by the wealthy and mushrooming inequality, the nightmare debacle in Iraq and the mistreatment of the veterans, the soaring cost of food, etc. But this challenge on torture is the knife edge of Bush's assault on the Constitution, the glove thrown down; and impeachment is the sharp edge of our only appropriate response, the clear simple distilled essence of our willingness to join a battle that is being forced upon us.
"Let it not be said by history that this was the moment when we were issued a fateful challenge, and submitted."
All CD readers: sign this petition, circulate it, write about it and push the issue! Kucinich concluded that this is the only move left that might head off war with Iran and the loss of our democracy. He was right and he's still right. It's time to act!
Is it too late? We'll never know if we don't try.
According to several sources I have read on line, Pelosi, Feinstein's husband, and several other well known long term Democrats have made such tremendous profits from the no-bid contracts and the oil contracts of BushCo that they truly do not want to put a hole in their own personal golden goose. They also do not want to risk getting themselves investigated. It's much easier and cleaner to simply say, "it's off the table". I truly regret that some of our fine long term Democrats have dirty laundry that they do not want exposed. It is preventing the public from learning exactly what did and did not actually occur behind closed doors.
Majority of congressional democrats have NO BACK BONE. Majority of congressational repubs will not impeach.
Why start the process? Can it continue beyond the presidency into 2009?
We, the citizens, have to remember to vote into office new candidates and put the encumbents out to pasture.
from the article: "A lot of Americans are skittish about the term impeachment..." unless it involves sex.
apparently the finer points of constitutional law are too abstruse for this crowd.
judging by the care with which evidence was preserved, the wtc/pentagon mass murders pale in comparison to bubba's oval office canoodling.
Paul Revere -- your words are powerfully true, and …
are changing American MINDs and perceptions,
Right NOW !
Namaste
Yes, you're right, Ken.
Support Cindy Sheehan!
Won't happen as long as Pelosi continues to rubber stamp Bush's policies. Wake up Nancy.
Betty Hall is a true American patriot. This 87 years young woman puts people like Bush,Cheney,Pelosi and the rest of the crime cabal to shame.
