As Uranium Firms Eye New Mexico, Navajos Are Wary
AMBROSIA LAKE, N.M. — Twenty years after uranium mining ceased in New Mexico amid plummeting prices for the ore, global warming and the soaring cost of oil are renewing interest in nuclear power — and in the state’s uranium belt.
At least five companies are seeking state permits to mine the uranium reserves, estimated at 500 million pounds or more, and Uranium Resources Inc. (URI), a Texas-based company, wants to reopen a uranium mill in Ambrosia Lake.
Industry officials say a uranium boom could mean thousands of jobs and billions in mineral royalties and taxes for the state.
But the deposits are largely in and around Navajo land, and the industry’s poor record on health and safety as it extracted tons of the ore in past decades has soured many Navajos on uranium mining. In 2005, the Navajo Nation banned uranium mining and milling on its land, and thousands of tribe members are receiving or seeking federal compensation for the health effects of past uranium exposure.
Like many Navajos who worked in the mines, Larry J. King didn’t know then that there was anything dangerous about it. “We had no respirators; you’d have sweat running down your face with the uranium dust getting in your ears, nose and mouth,” said King, who surveyed mine tunnels from 1975 to 1982. “You couldn’t help but swallow it.”
During mining’s peak, from the early 1950s to the early 1980s, about 400 million pounds of uranium were extracted from the region. At the end of the boom, around 1984, the price of uranium languished below $10 a pound. Mines shut down, and the United States began importing nearly all of its uranium, with the bulk coming now from Canada, Russia and Australia. But by last summer, the price had rebounded to a record high of $136 a pound.
Though the mines created numerous jobs and substantial royalties for the Navajo and Laguna tribes, the decades of extraction took a heavy toll: lung cancer, kidney disease, birth defects and other ailments at notably high levels among miners and families who lived among piles of uranium tailings — the ground-up waste from milling — and even used the material to build their homes.
All but one of the major companies now seeking to mine in New Mexico are newcomers to the state and have promised to do a better job than their predecessors. In addition, pending state legislation would require them to deposit a small percentage of their profits in a “legacy fund” to clean up existing uranium contamination.
But King said, “I don’t believe them one bit.”
He blames his recent health problems on uranium. He remembers July 16, 1979, when more than 90 million gallons of uranium-contaminated water burst through the dam of a tailings holding pond and into the Puerco River running by his land. And he remembers seeing his cattle drop dead from, he thinks, drinking polluted mine runoff.
Another former uranium miner, Milton Head, 69, describes similar effects on people and livestock. “Stubby Simpson was a picture of health, didn’t smoke or drink, then he got lung cancer and lasted six months,” Head said of another former miner. “Steers would turn yellow, their horns and hooves would slough off, like they were just drying up.”
Head, who is not Navajo, is all for uranium as a fuel source but does not trust the federal government to regulate the industry. He lives a few blocks from a former uranium mill that is now a Superfund site.
Teddy Nez, a Navajo, lives near a 40-foot-tall pile of uranium tailings. Little ground vegetation grows in the parched climate.
“You’re breathing uranium right now,” Nez said as dust swirled through the air.
There are more than 1,000 abandoned uranium mines and several mill sites in the region, according to the Southwest Research and Information Center, a nonprofit public interest group that focuses on energy development and natural resources. Chris Shuey, director of the group’s Uranium Impact Assessment Program, says three-quarters of the sites have not been cleaned up.
None of URI’s holdings are on the Navajo reservation, though there is some intersection with Navajo private allotted lands. Jurisdiction in the area is a complicated web of mineral and water rights underlying a checkerboard of tribal and nontribal holdings.
URI Chief Operating Officer Richard Van Horn said the Navajo tribe’s uranium mining ban could limit the company’s plans but would not stop mining in the region.
Along with conventional mining, in which uranium-laden ore is taken out of the ground and milled, URI plans to use a process called in situ recovery mining. The ore is left in the ground, and oxygenated water is injected into uranium-laden aquifers to essentially bond to the mineral and pump it to the surface.
While the process causes much less waste and surface disruption, opponents worry that it will contaminate the water supply since it involves mobilizing uranium within the aquifer.
URI’s New Mexico operations director, Randy Foote, counters that the area’s water is already not potable and that the company would be required to return the aquifer to its baseline state before ending operations.
“Uranium is actually relatively benign,” Foote said. “All the wells out here have small amounts of uranium in them.”

So I guess the Navajos have nothing to worry about. Then why is cheney/bush/co concerned if Iran gets some of this benign material? I doubt Mr. Foote cares one iota about the Navajos or the land, just maximize profits.

I thought we had a long standing program to get rid of the Indians? I mean look what the Indians did to the enviroment before we got here. There were wild animals all over the place, streams and rivers full of good eating fish and millions of those unruly, hard to herd buffalo. We took all of the trees, allowed the top soil to erode and blow away, leaving dirt and rocks. Now we have to take the rocks, can’t waste anything. The Indians have casinos and souvineer shops, what’s their problem?
To say “uranium is benign” is to state an incomplete truth. Naturally ocurring and spread through tons of soil it probably is not too harmful. When extracted, refined, and then “enriched” (which is the only form in which it is useful to the power industry) it is deadly toxic for tens of thousands of years.
Furthermore the mining process produces numerous toxic by-products that foul the air, water, and soil on which all of life is baaed. This is a no-brainer–leave the stuff alone or it will kill us all. Had our forefathers listened to Tesla instead of Edison and Westinghouse this wouldn’t be happening.

I used to live near that river that was polluted. The Republicans have had a nasty history of snatching resources from the Indians, polluting their land and water, stealing their water, causing tribes to fight one another, taking their kids because they were not Christian, letting every sort of extreme Christian procelyze to the Indians. It’s disgusting. They couldn’t even worship their own gods until Jimmy Carter reinstated their right to worship freely. Americans should be ashamed of this history of intolerance.

Most of the uranium mining today in the US is by a technique called ISL (In Situ Leaching). This technology does not disrupt the surface topography. It is only suitable with very specific geography but where it can be proerly done, it is quite benign.
This technology was not available 20 years ago. I have no idea if these deposits are suitable to ISL.

BETTER than ISL is that we don’t need uranium at all; it can be left right where it is, in the ground. That way, clean or not makes no difference; it’ll be totally irrelevant.

IF ANYTHING LIKE DU’s half-life, then try around 4.5 BILLION YEARS, instead of tens of thousands; although, it’d probably work out to likely enough be [forever] in human terms if the half-life of enriched uranium’s dangerous nature was only tends of thousands of years. If not killed off by radiation, then we’ll likely exterminate ourselves and much other life before year 12,008.

As with so many things, there is a learning curve. Those early Navajo miners were victims. Mining uranium today should not be hazardous and damage the environment, so long as the companies are regulated and will face punishment for not meeting ISO 14001 standards and government environmental regulations. Enforcement is key. The Navajo’s have good reason to be concerned in this country where government could care less about the health of citizens, so long as to corporations who rule them make profits.
Over 50% of the uranium ore mined is from Australia and Canada. US is less than 2%. Lets just import it like everything else.
The Uranium being mined is over 99% U-238. It must be enriched to 3-5% U 235 before it can be used as fuel in nuclear reactors. Weapons grade uranium requires enrichment to over 20% U-235, which few countries have the capability to do.

So if you control the supply and enriched uranium production/supplies, you control who can get nuclear power and weapons, and can form yourself a nice little cartel.

Just moving on from the peak oil myth to the global warming myth and carbon tax. OPEC to GNEP. Iran is not invited to the GNEP, and so we must take out it’s enrichment capability, to protect the future cartel being formed.

The last time the government wanted uranium they split the Oglala’s into factions that cost the lives of many tribal people. COINTELPRO was in the center of things. AIM was called into the rez to protect the people who were opposed to selling any land to the government. A shootout took place between the FBI and AIM on tribal lands, a kind of illegal invasion by the FBI. Two FBI agents were killed. The FBI framed Leonard Peliter for the killings and he remains in prison today. The government got their uranium and the American Indian Civil Rights Movement absorbed a disabling blow from which it never fully recovered. Look for an attempted repeat of the same tactics by the Feds.

The rest, which is about the size of “New Jersey”, is “hanging by a thread”, (their words), according to the British enviromental team working there. This is a most serious problem and global warming is causing it. So argue that fact that it’s a MYTH please.
Scientists were shocked and could not believe this is happening so quickly, they had predicted it would not happen for fifty or more years, if at all. In situ leaching has very specific requirements that the ore body be above the water table and that there be an impermeable layer below the ore body, generally a layer of clay. If the ore body is then itself permeable, ISL can be used without hurting ground water.
We are having a debate in Virginia. There is a very rich ore body in south central Virginia that the owner wants to mine. Uranium mining is currently prohibited in Virginia but the law is under review by the state legislature. I don’t know if the Cole Hill deposit is suitable for ISL or not but most ISL mining is done in dry climates and that does not apply to Virginia.

Fusion is a very attractive alternative but it is not a short term energy source. It will probably be the middle of the century before usable power would be available from controlled fusion. ITER is just now getting rolling and first plasma is probably 10 years away.

Isn’t that peculiar? Bush doesn’t even acknowledge the reality of global warming, so why, then, does it require a “solution”? Besides that, why would anybody give any weight whatsoever to the technical/scientific judgements of someone who doesn’t even believe in evolution?
I don’t advocate Fusion as a short-term-alternative (but, I would re-emphasize Federal research-monies/priorities, so that Fission doesn’t ‘eat’ 98% while Fusion languishes with 1%).
Oil is the Energy of our Civilization for the foreseeable-Future — quite-obviously (why I would convert light-truck/car-fleets and most gasoline-powered stationary-engines/generators to LPG — and RIGHT NOW!).
Also, most ‘petrol-diesel’ dirtying the air instead of waste/surplus/veggie bio-diesels is ’silly’ and “wrong-headed”.
Hybrids/’electric’/H2/solar/fuel-cells/pneumatic/etc. are NOT ‘practical Answers’ (and never will-be). LPG, however, is plentiful/cheap/easily-refined/’cracked’ — and CO2 is NOT ‘the Problem’ (other greenhouse-gases ARE — including from our massive/stupid/Coal-fired/unregulated Electrical-Utility/Mass-Grid systems).

I agree that fusion should be a national R&D priority. We have, however, recently withdrawn our funding for ITER. Fortunately the Chinese have a longer view and have picked up our share.
Fusion may solve some physics problems with power generation. It will not solve social problems that are caused by greed and avarice. It will be a very expensive power generation scheme, probably more capital intensive than nuclear power and will be mostly available to the wealthiest nations.

I would add that Dineh people have one of the oldest intact societies in North America. The have drought resistent plants and they know how to survive in harsh conditions. Not by science but by personal knowledge of the earth and acting accordingly. Duh.

That most important ice shelf is critical for the cold water river which flows northward in the Pacific and is the breeding ground for our vital to ALL life phytoplankton.

My sister taught grade school for seven years on the Navajo reservation in northern Arizona. She loved them kids like her own. I have some wonderful art work done by eigth graders, should be in a museum.
