Cheney Contradicts Facts and Findings Concerning Iran's Nuclear Goals
BEIRUT -- Vice President Dick Cheney charged in an interview released Tuesday that Iran is trying to develop weapons-grade uranium, though international inspectors and U.S. intelligence services have not found evidence of such an effort.
"Obviously, they're also heavily involved in trying to develop nuclear weapons enrichment, the enrichment of uranium to weapons-grade levels," Cheney said, according to a transcript released by the White House of an interview done Monday in Turkey with ABC's Martha Raddatz.
Iran insists its nuclear program is for peaceful energy production, but the U.S. and other Western countries fear Tehran will eventually develop nuclear weapons.
In its latest report, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency, says Iran is enriching uranium at its plant in Natanz to less than 3.8%, which is the level necessary to create fuel for a civilian reactor. Weapons-grade uranium is enriched to 80% or 90%.
Cheney's comment also contradicted the assessment of U.S. intelligence agencies, which concluded in a report revealed late last year that Iran had halted its efforts to develop nuclear weapons in 2003.
The vice president's statement was the second time in a week that a White House official has made an allegation regarding Iran's nuclear program and its intentions that did not square with publicly known facts.
President Bush said last week that Iran's leaders had "declared" they were seeking nuclear weapons. Iran has always denied the charge, and the White House later backpedaled, calling the president's remarks "shorthand."
Cheney made the remarks at the end of a 10-day tour of Middle East countries to discuss high oil prices, the U.S. military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan and the Arab-Israeli conflict. But the subject of Iran was never far from his agenda.
In addition to Israel and the Palestinian territories, his route took him to Oman, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Iraq and Turkey, in effect encircling the country that has become the greatest U.S. rival in the region. And at almost every stop, he brought up the subject of Iran and its role in disrupting U.S. efforts in the region.
Before the first stop of his visit to Oman, a Cheney aide told Agence France-Presse news service that Iran "has got to be very high" on the agenda for the talks.
"The Omanis . . . are concerned by the escalating tensions between much of the world community and Iran and by Iran's activities, particularly in the nuclear field," the news agency quoted the aide as saying.
In Saudi Arabia, Cheney also brought up the Iran issue. According to the Jidda-based English-language Arab News, the Saudis oppose any war with Iran. Saudi King Abdullah also raised the issue of Israel's undeclared nuclear program, saying that the Middle East should be free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.
In Jerusalem on Monday, Cheney accused Iran and Syria of "doing everything they can to torpedo the peace process," a reference to the teetering talks between Israel and the Palestinians.

Show AllUSA is a desperate country, with a very bleak outlook, with failing leadership. as the world falls apart around us, we the people, fail to act. the revolution won't be pretty. usa will be an open wound, with a disease it can't cure. it don't look good folks.
This guy is a mad man. When he lies like that why is he not called out on his lies? When will US citizens wake up and impeach this guy and his pet monkey? It seems to me that US citizens don't really care to know what their country does. The world doesn't hate the US for it's freedoms. Everyone wants to be free. They hate the US for what it does all over the world. I don't think that the average US citizen gets that fact or cares for that matter.

-Cheney accused Iran and Syria of "doing everything they can to torpedo the peace process,"
Ah, the "peace process".
Peace,
process,
process,
process peace,
process peace,
peace,
process, process, process.
The Israelis and the Americans have been occupying Palestine for how long? And I think there has been too much process and not enough peace.
how treasonous.
how long will it take a freshly hung cheney and bush to die?
hopefully those executions will be as public as saddam's.
In Bu$hCo speak the word 'peace' is secret code for 'war' and hence more projected profit for the Bu$hCo crime syndicate...
Here comes the pre-2003 logic "Well, ya know, just because there is no evidence doesn't mean it doesn't exist."
It's kind of like the same people, as Lewis Black says, who think the Matrix is real just because we can't disprove it.
How many pals has President Ahmadinejad shot in the face and then tried to cover up?
the Dick sez: "Obviously, they're also heavily involved in trying to develop nuclear weapons enrichment ..."
The use of the word "obviously", which was also applied in the run-up to Iraq, is a clever construct for an otherwise lazy propagandist.
Consider his flunky W, who repeatedly spouts lines like, "I disagree" when presented with facts.
Here, the Dick offers nothing with which to disagree. Iran's nuclear weapons pursuit is not simply HIS belief. It's the only possible belief. It is "obvious."
Therefore it is obvious to the press, and subsequently to a wide swath of U.S. consumers, as well.
This tour completes the pre-production phase of the bombing campaign. Next up, the false-flag operation wherein Iran "attacks" the U.S. or its interests in the region. Preferably in conjunction with a domestic story that needs wiped from the front page (Obama nomination, another McKeating scandal, etc.).
He lied about Iraq....it surprises you he would lie about Iran?
You have to wonder why someone would be concerned about Iran having nuclear capacity...the ability to defend themselves from some invader who wants the oil and occupation of their country....They are pretty big on do as I say, not as I do up there in Bush-Cheney-land.
This speech sounds dangerously close to the pre-Iraq invasion speeches....
The bulk of Americans have a clue now....duh, Dick Cheney.
His answer being....."So?"
Ditto jlocke...I agree.
If there ever was a face of evil, the Devil, etc, just look above. I'm amazed everyday that this madman can do whatever he pleases and no one in Congress or around the world does anything about it. Can anyone tell me what this guy has on everyone? Have they all gotten manilla envelopes on their desks one morning with incriminating photos and evidence? Any bets that he's spent more time spying on us than our real enemies? I'm starting to think that our real enemies are his friends.
I agree truthmonger
When it comes to Cheney....people should consider the source...fool me once, shame on you...fool me twice...shame on me.
A lyin' sack, if ever I've seen one!
It is dangerous to make the case against war with Iran to rest on whether it is producing weapons-grade uranium. What if a case can be made that Iran is seeking to build a nuclear weapon? Will you then support the invasion of a people which is seeking to end the Anglo-American occupation of the ME?
Any productive discussion of policy in the ME must begin with the fact of its occupation.
So he lyes in an effort to start a war, then passes himself off as an agent of peace, and apparently expects to be taken seriously.
If I were him I would not allow my picture to be taken. He looks like a mean, vicious, money-grubbing, sick old man.
"Seldom went such grotesqueness with such woe
I never saw a brute I hated so.
He must be wicked to deserve such pain."
truthmonger....well said only to add this SOB looks incredibly unwell...to think his amassed fortune in Haliburton stock options, dividends and withheld stipends won't be worth a crumpet to him in a couple of years as he dies prematurely of heart disease...all his madness, war mongering, power and control for nought...
Except leaving millions of Iraqi's and Americans war vets with ongoing nightmares
This time around, if they want war badly enough they will have to drop the propaganda stunts [fool us once, shame on you...] and resort to covert machinations or dictatorial means.
When he pleas with the American people that Iran is developing Nuclear Weapons, our response to him should be the same response he gave when he was told that 70% of this country is against the war... "SO?"
Some say that a McCain presidency would amount to a third Bush term. I say that a Hillary Wal-Mart Bosnia Clinton presidency would amount to a third Cheney term. Outside of dimwitted W, only Hillary Wal-Mart can match Darth in shameless baldfaced treacherous mendacity.
kivals,
You can say anything you want, but obviously you have taken no lesson from the story you are posting about. A statement in absence of facts is meaningless. You could do a Republican proud with your thoroughly, unsubstantiated name-calling. That is what they do (it's called Swift-boating, you may have heard of it) when their lack of facts or the exposure of their use of "phacts" gets the better of them.
It is no better than Cheney saying "it's obvious....", when in any reasonable court of law, an attorney would be leaping to his feet yelling, "Objection, arguing facts not in evidence". I expect a little higher level of discourse from the writers here.
Its time the US cuts off its Dick and shaves off its Bush!!
Didn't Hillary vote to give bushCON authorization to call anything Iran does, "an act of terrorism"? And by extension the green light to give the launch code numbers to the cruise missle programmers?
Impeach THESE BASTARDS BEFORE ITS TOO LATE, YA HEAR DEMS?
YOUR PRECIOUS METAL HOLDINGS AND OIL STOCKS WON'T BUY TO YOU A TICKET TO HEAVEN, BUT THEY WILL GRANT YOU ADMISSION TO HELL.
kendpotter,
Cheney and Hillary both display an unusual tendency to manufacture facts, with details, out of whole cloth, that can be easily disproven by available video or other irrefutable sources. Cheney has done this repeatedly, while Hillary has been caught recently manufacturing the Bosnia story, which I assumed virtually everyone at CD was aware of.
It is not unusual for politicians to stretch the truth and embellish stories, but it is unusual for them to contradict such obvious video evidence. And, taken together with other evidence, including Bernstein's assertions that in writing what was intended to be a friendly biography of Clinton that he discovered she has serious problems with the truth, I find her to be an extraordinary politician in that regard.
From an interview by Bill Steigerwald of Human Events with Carl Bernstein about the Hillary biography:
Q: What is the most troubling thing you found out about Hillary in the course of doing your book?
A: I wouldn't single out a particular aspect. I think there are some tendencies -- one toward the inauthentic. But a trouble with truth-telling, I would think, is the constant aspect of her time in public life that is most troubling.
Once again folks; the main objective of the "Project for a New American Century" as is outlined in the document of the same name, is to have two major military engagements at the same time.
That of course would be Iraq and (they hope) Iran. As Bush and Cheney's power to make this a reality wanes, they get more and more desperate. But I can guarantee you that if we don't get these two out of office before the end of the year (via Impeachment) they will find a way to accomplish their objective.
Wake up America!
Thank you kivals,
A most informative post.
Iran is not merely a nation it is one of two nations in the world run by religious bodies according to religious law - the other is the Vatican.
Iran is not an Iraq or an Afghanistan and half the Governing Council now in Iraq are clerics with Iranian backing. Invading Iraq was dumb but invading Iran would be suicide. Having watched what we did to Iraq, the Iranians won't lie down to surrender and unlike Iraq who were universally disliked in the middle East, Iran has many friends. With an attack on Iran, Saudi Arabia will most likely revolt, Pakistan would be in and it'll be World War III. This is madness.
Hey people,
This is just the same song, 100th verse, for Cheney and company...business as usual and they think Americans are that dumb and gullible (I guess some are).
As to Hillary, she has a membership to the club.
Argh....why can't they be true patriots for a change...TELL THE TRUTH and QUIT LYING, MISLEADING, and PLOTTING like scavengers and abused children.
Yes, one of the power club will accomplish their mission...more war, greed, corruption...false flag, martial law...and cessation of elections....
Americans had better get aware and better hit the streets, emails, letters...exercise your freedom of speech while it lasts...you are in for more of the same...
djwolf....
Russia is lined up and ready to fight us over this...probably China, too...
Pakistan and Saudi might be players...but we have bigger problems than them were the "boys" dumb enough to invade Iran. It may not be us that strikes first...Israel can launch and the starting gun has gone off. Israel thinks nothing of ruining our country or dragging us down...
"Slippery Dick" Cheney is the "Father of a Thousand Evil Lies"
IMPEACH both CHENEY and BUSH..............TODAY
Save the world from WWIII.................NOW
What d'ya say to a man who is both delusional and extremely dangerous?
Doesn't our Vice Dick stand outside the province of reason altogether?
So? What else is new? I think we need to use the Tree of Liberty for this guy. Evil.
Evening...what can you say to a man like that...nothing.
Rational people can deal with other rational people and expect result.
Psychopathic Behavior
The study of the psychopath reveals an individual who is incapable of feeling guilt, remorse or empathy for their actions. They are generally cunning, manipulative and know the difference between right and wrong but dismiss it as applying to them.
Definition of Insanity
Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
And India is rejecting our demands that they accept the nuclear technology we want them to have. Odd it is the same technology we are accusing Iran of wanting to develop.
Somewhere there is a painting of Cheney disintegrating a la Dorian Grey.
Can't you see a pipeline from Iraq, through Iran, through Afganistan, Pakistan and India into the Indian Ocean? Wow what money could be saved transporting OIL and GAS by pipeline instead of ships, at the mercy of the sea?
That's what it's all about. Exxon, Shell, etc., need that access and they will kill to get it. Big oil sure get what they're after.
Cheney and company have one aim, perpetual war and wouldn't you if it brought absolute power and unlimited wealth. These people are psychopaths, they're unable to act in a normal way, like Blair they're convinced the whole world is wrong and they're right.
Bush, Blair and Cheney should be arrested and charged with war crimes just like Hitlers gang were, but it will not happen, the attack on Iran will.
Why should Cheney and his puppet and the rest of the neo con crew stop lying now? They've been hard at it for the past seven years and two months. Who was it recently that counted 947 lies so far? Cheney is especially skilled at the old tactic that "if you tell a lie often enough and long enough, people will believe it."
Notwithstanding the gung-ho attitude amongst the born again Christian elements in the US military leadership. I cannot believe that professional military officers would countenance the insanity of opening a third front in the neo-con's attempt to shape the world in their (and the multinationals') interests.
They must have run scenarios through their computers time after time and the end result must show a spiraling down into disaster, with a well armed and fanatical Iran doing everything in its power to destroy what it would see as a Crusading infidel army.
The US is stretched to the limit now in its occupation of Iraq and war in Afganistan and more and more of the "Coalition of the willing" are abandoning the fiasco. Australian troops leave Iraq mid-year.
Without the use of nuclear weapons victory in Iran is impossible. Even then, occupation would be a nightmare, making Iraq seem like a picnic.
Oh, and by the way. Where will the money come from? The Iraq invasion will cost at least three trillion dollars (equal to the amount spent by the US on the entire second world war, in present dollar terms). Your economy is in a mess and is only being supported by Japan and China. Borrowings from whom have financed the war. Bush will bankrupt his country if he goes any further.
Try this scenerio:
Bush attempts to go out in a blaze of glory.
Senior officers in the US forces mutiny.
Congress is forced to impeach both Bush and Cheney.
The presidency passes to the third in line. Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Exactly, nothing more to add...
@argus t March 26th, 2008 11:27 pm
There is no plan to occupy or even to send in troops. (I think) there
is a plan to bomb only. This would not cost billions or tie up troops.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah in a meeting with visiting US Vice President Dick Cheney has rejected any US military strike against Iran.

Why would anyone in his/her right mind even bother to listen to this warmongering a'hole? Just because he is the Vice President? Is he? He is a fraud just like his 'partner in crime' is.
George C Brown is right, to say that "Cheney is especially skilled at the old tactic that "if you tell a lie often enough and long enough, people will believe it.""
The majority of people are so comatose from watching "soaps" and reality TV, that they do not want to dig beneath the surface for the hard truth.
I agree with Truthmonger about Cheney, he really does epitomise evil, there is hatred in his voice and his face. I believe that direct action against these people is long overdue, and I find it incredulous that they were voted in for a second time.
I hope you never tire of publishing the above photo of Cheney. Every time I look at it , I am reminded of what a demented, sick-looking motha-****ah he really is.
I thought these two sentences from the article were particularly humorous:
'President Bush said last week that Iran's leaders had "declared" they were seeking nuclear weapons. Iran has always denied the charge, and the White House later backpedaled, calling the president's remarks "shorthand."'
I guess I would call my response to the pResident as "short-finger."
This man is truly an EVIL MAN
I hope someday he is brought up on war crimes
Right after Obama's inauguration, the FBI should arrest this dildo and his boss and take them away in handcuffs in front of millions of viewers. Their actions, justified by their mendacity, have caused tens of thousands of deaths, weakened our country and endangered our standing in the world.
Cheney is a madman. He's an absolute madman. Time for the republican party to remove these nuts from power. Why do they shirk from their obligations?
This a republican White house-a republican administration-a republican presidency.
Why won't the republican party assume responsibility and remove these people from power? Why do they shirk from this? Have they no sense of responsibility-no sense of patriotism-no sense of maturity? Have they nothing left to offer but more of the same?
