Rain Can't Dampen Impeachment Protest
On a rainy evening last week, a small group of men and women gathered at a busy intersection in Wayne with a message for passing cars."Impeach them now," one sign proclaimed.
That would be President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney - in case anyone is confused about the impeaching.
All this may seem odd now, the notion of standing on the edge of a rain-soaked roadway at rush hour and calling for the removal of a president and vice president who will be out of office in nine months anyway.
But don't tell that to the hardy collection of northern New Jersey residents who have mounted a persistent call for impeachment. So far, the North Jersey group has 540 members.
"It's not wild-eyed and crazy," said Stuart Hutchison of Wayne, a 58-year-old actor, writer and radio producer who is one of the most active impeachment advocates in North Jersey. "I chafe at being categorized as a person on the fringe."
Maybe so. To peer into the world of the impeachment movement is to gaze at a piece of America's political fringe - certainly the part that is decidedly left of center. But such a description is far too simplistic and incomplete. North Jersey's impeachment roots spread across a wide spectrum.
Consider the political journey of Josephine Sippie-Gora of Kinnelon. She is 67, a former high school math teacher and real estate agent - hardly the description of a radical.
"I don't think of myself as a fringe person," she said. "I think of myself as rational."
Sippie-Gora, who was raised in Passaic and is the mother of a grown son and daughter, voted for Ronald Reagan in 1980. Before that, she
voted for Richard Nixon and Barry Goldwater.
Times change, though. She voted for Bill Clinton, then Ralph Nader - while also becoming more involved in what she calls "social justice issues."
But when Sippie-Gora read about the faulty intelligence that prompted the Iraq war, about the torturing of captured terrorist suspects and about the increases in domestic surveillance, she took another step and joined North Jersey's impeachment group.
"I believe in the rule of law," she said, adding this logic for impeachment: "It's not a political decision. It's accountability."
Keith Armonaitis, another impeachment activist, agrees.
"We need to hold our elected officials accountable just as they hold us accountable," Armonaitis said. "Let's say you robbed a bank and there is a statute of limitations with only nine months left. Do you think the police should stop looking for you?"
Armonaitis, 39, a director of research for a marketing firm, grew up in Rochelle Park, the son of a train engineer. He now lives in Rockaway with his wife and a 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son.
"I'm not anti-American. I'm not anti-government," he says. "I believe very strongly in the American ideals set forth over 200 years ago."
Impeachment, Armonaitis said, "is not about kicking people out of office. It's about investigating. I don't think it would be traumatic. I think you'll see people breathing a sigh of relief."
Not everyone is so quick to leap on the impeachment bandwagon.
Rep. Steve Rothman, the Fair Lawn Democrat and hardly a fan of Bush, still describes the traumatic impact on Congress of President Bill Clinton's impeachment battle a decade ago.
"This is not a new issue for me," said Rothman, then a member of the House Judiciary Committee that held impeachment hearings.
Rothman said it's not unusual for constituents to raise the question of impeaching Bush. And while he co-sponsored an unsuccessful bill two years ago to investigate possible impeachment charges against Bush, Rothman is not eager to jump into a full-blown impeachment proceeding now.
"We know what the cost to the nation will be in terms of loss of congressional and presidential focus if Congress begins an impeachment of the president," he said. "The question is whether the evidence of alleged impeachable offenses justifies the cost."
For the small group that gathered last week on the Wayne intersection, the answer is already clear.
Peg Wood, 50, who lives in West Milford and works as a mechanical engineer for a Bergen County electronics firm, even goes so far as to call for an investigation of Bush even after a new president moves into the White House.
"He will be out but he can still be charged for his crimes," Wood said. "If he's not charged, that will set a precedent for the future."
And one ongoing issue will likely fuel the impeachment drive - and prompt small groups of impeachment advocates to show on roadsides with signs.
"The No. 1 issue is the war in Iraq," said Stephen Palmino, 62 of Wayne, a former high school art teacher who volunteers now as an EMT. "Somebody has to answer for it."

Show AllIt's a matter of urgency to remove these war mongers and since impeachment is off the table, what will happen if these crooks are allowed to hang around until the fall will be world calamity. It's just a matter of time before they nuke Iran and bring havoc down on the whole world. But America has become a Nation of Sheep. Only a few dare protest and then these brave souls are labeled as living on the fringes. Like if you are anti-war, you can become considered a kook. By allowing these criminals to get away with tearing up our Constitution, starting an illegal war, legalizing torture, etc. the majority of Americans have become a disgrace as well. .
Seems to me there are many so called Representatives who are worried about the lack of focus if impeachment was to be started.....well had there been the correct focus in the first place maybe Impeachment and Prosecution wouldn't be needed now. I personally find the audacity of all these politicians just another ploy. And their seeming lack of understanding of the Constitution maybe criminal, some of them need to be impeached as well.
To think that anything they do is more important than our Constitution is ridiculous. And to carry their nonsense farther instead of using their Constitutional powers correctly.... they defer to the courts to try and bring Meyers and Boulton to justice.
I want to know by what right if not the US Constitution do they claim to govern? And how is not standing your oath of office judicious and good for the country?
IMPEACH AND PROSECUTE NOW NOT LATER
and in my opinion this should include all who stand against or do nothing in upholding the US CONSTITUTION our rule of law
The next Imperial Chimp who sits in the oval orifice will put his/her boot to the neck of justice and demand that you forget whatever happened 2001-2008.
Once Cheney has bombed Iran directly, or indirectly via Israel, it will be so much easier to settle this question of whether or not he should have been impeached beforehand, won't it? Of course, it will also be too late!
The problem is not so much about getting the majority of votes in Congress - it's that much of Congress is complicit in the crimes.
Moreover, an Obama, Clinton or McCain Presidency will continue the wars.
sifneymoss I don't think you can Impeach someone when they're not here anymore.
Hopefully, maybe, we can get them on war crimes!
There are people who want to impeach but can't get enough support in House and Senate. What about after 1/20/09?
"can we move on, yet ?"
PLEASE! Just what many politicians want us to feel - like we have no power to change anything.
THE ONLY time we have to hold these criminals accountable is NOW. WE KNOW what they have done in the past. We have a pretty good idea of what they will try to accomplish in the future.
We have no way of knowing the outcome of the next election and cannot depend on that to resolve the wrong done to this nation and others. We MUST act now and at least begin the process of holding Bush and Cheney accountable.
So what if it does not come to completion. We know the Senate will not likely vote to impeach. What matters is that we know we are getting the message out that we do not approve of what this administration had done to Iraq, not done for veterans, Katrina victims and so on.
We have to begin to purge ourselves of this trash we allowed into our White House. It has to begin now and NOT be put off for another time when just as many issues and concerns will still be begging for attention.
Justice has to be returned to our system so publicly that all the world sees who supports torture and who does not {and fifteen other charges}. We all need to see justice applied to those who have ignored the law. THE TIME IS NOW!
chi1088 I'm with you. Right up to the bitter end I want these bastards, Bush and Cheney, to know the only people who want to keep them in office are those asskissing rethugs sitting and taking our money to rubberstamp the both of them!
AND then hopefully they will be removed!
That is absolutely correct Peg Wood.. if he is not charged, that WILL set precedent for the future. Welcome to the future ladies and gentlemen. Bush and Cheney are still not seriously being investigated and they still continue to misuse their powers even today. We were informed years ago and their actions and decisions ARE setting precedent as I type. It IS already happening.. Bush and Cheney are laughing at us. They can't even believe themselves that they are still getting away with it. Invincible
In my opinion we won't hold together as a functioning country with Bush/ Cheney in office another nine months.
The number one goal as set forth in their "Project for a New American Century" outline is to be involved in two major military operations... in other words, Iraq and Iran.
If we go into Iran militarily (unprovoked) we will lose our super power status, and will all be working for shit wages really soon!
So you ask if Impeachment would be worth the toll it would supposedly take on our government... come on that's a no-brainer!!
By the way, we here on the west coast are also very much for Impeachment (still) There will be another Beach Impeach event (Beach Impeach #5) on Saturday, April 26th @ 10:00am, at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. For more info. or to sign up go to: beachimpeach.org You can also check out the impressive photos from the first four Beach Impeach Projects.
IMPEACH! It's NOT Too Late!
If we don't impeach them the next administration, be it Republican or Democrat, will take it as a go-ahead signal to continue these disastrous crimes and misdemeanors. Make no mistake about it.
inpeach tony blair george bush gordon brown
and the rest of the war mungers,
WTF,
I wish you could give such explicit instructions on legal actions that we might take.
"We know what the cost to the nation will be in terms of loss of congressional and presidential focus if Congress begins an impeachment of the president," he said. "The question is whether the evidence of alleged impeachable offenses justifies the cost."
Hey A** H@@@: there is no president, there is a King as of 10/09/02, and!, the focus is on bombing Iran and the completion of conquering the swath of land Alexander attempted to conquer - using and risking the US Citizens $$$$ and blood while risking none of their own.
One mind: impeach!
One heart: impeach!
One voice: impeach!
...somebody above posts "can we move on yet?" after this article. I totally disagree with this 'human doormat' attitude which chooses to look the other way and not prosecute Cheney and Bush for their gross criminal acts!
After all the laws Bush and Cheney have broken, the thousands of dead in Iraq for their illegal war based on lies, their flouting of the Geneva Conventions and torturing so many innocent people, the illegal wiretappings of US citizens creating a virtual police state, and their destroying of America's image abroad: BUSH AND CHENEY MUST BE PROSECUTED IN A COURT OF LAW. THEY ARE KNOWN FELONS WHO HAVE COMMITTED SERIOUS CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY.
If they are not prosecuted and impeached NOW by a corrupt and enabling Congress (lead by Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Feinstein, et al), then Americans should come together and file a Class Action Lawsuit to prosecute and imprison Bush and Cheney for their numerous crimes and misdeeds against the People of the USA as well as of the World. There must be a way to bring these criminals to justice. What they have done is far too serious to be left behind as we "move on". What they have done sets an extremely dangerous precedent: fascism.
I can't believe the passivity and meekness of people nowadays. Pure self interest to the point of What a bunch of gutless wimps! These two wingnuts really need to be incarcerated. What an outrage it all is.
..."a president and vice president who will be gone in 9 months anyway"
You really think so? I don't. Even if they were, just THINK of how much damage they will inflict in 9 more months. How many deaths will occur and how many people will be tortured in 9 months. 9 months is an eternity when evil people are holding the knife.
And there is NO expiration date on doing what is RIGHT. Even though most of our government is comatose, the people must still keep shouting IMPEACH. Because we know what the right thing SHOULD be - whether it happens or not -- we must show we KNOW and we won't forget and let it be swept under the rug.
Touche, Ezeflyer! :)
"The best way to get even with the rich is to make them poor".
Ok... so just WHO is going to be Impeached? bush? cheney? You need a congress to do that. Who are you going to Impeach there? Pelosi? Reid? It is a waste of time.
Impeachment cannot and will not proceed when you have a do-nothing congress. It's like trying to impeach Hitler. AIN'T GONNA HAPPEN.
What you need is indictment and the support of a war crimes tribunal. The time for impeachment has long since passed. A lot of people should be prosecuted.
It is disappointing that so few people (there should be millions) are actively demanding impeachment in public.
For the lazy ones, there is the option of hanging signs on freeway overpasses. This is called freeway blogging. If the overpass is carefully selected (i.e., one that does NOT have on or off-ramps and is difficult to access), the signs will likely stay up for up to several days. If the overpass is easy to get to, the sign will quickly be removed by pro-war commuters or Highway Patrol.
It is illegal. Hang the sign at night, with your car out of sight (less someone see you and note your license plate). Do not use materials that can be traced to you (masking tape is a great way to make the letters). Hang the sign on the INSIDE of the overpass safety wire (don't want it to fall on passing cars below). Be safe. Be stealthy.
See this CD article on freeway blogging:

PS: And, now we have information which suggests that we were threatening some countries to put troops into our wars in Afghanistan/Iraq ---
We are now coming to understand how corrupt American forces in government have tried to rule the world post WWII with OPERATION GLADIO which we only began to find out about a few years ago ---
and now some documents have come tumbling out which confirm that OPERATION GLADIO was also brought home to America -- i.e., the CIA was keeping right-wingers in power here by financing their campaigns. Funds were moved from the CIA to some right-wing Senators/House members thru Howard Huges Tool Company, part of which was a CIA front company.
Sen. Strom Thurmond and Sen. Gerry Ford are two of the Senators mentioned.
So . . . ?
Since at least the end of WWII we've been living under a rigged system of political violence throughout the world brought about by the CIA and other corrupt forces in our government.
Additionally, the computers were being brought in during the 1960's, so vote stealing by computer didn't begin in 2000, but long before.
See: http://www.constitution.org/vote/votescam__.htm
Two Florida journalists were looking to do a story on the elections and decided that one of them should run for office. Election night, they saw their total vote rise substantially and then --- after a "computer breakdown" ---fall back to the original number. Sound familiar?
They began an investigation and eventually wrote a book which was suppressed upon hitting the bookstores.
You can read or scan the book at the website which the family keeps going to inform the public.

False flag operations over a half century ---
domestically and internationally---!!!
CIA backing of right-wing candidates --- !!!
Rigged elections --- !!!
Political violence --- !!!
Malcolms X called it and we couldn't even completely understand what he was saying at the time --- !!!
Impeachment can be brought against people who've left office.
And that's about the only way that it will be brought against Bush/Cheney. First, because there are not enough votes in the Senate to convict and second, because the current Congress is justifiably terrified of the H3ll that Bush and Cheney can call down on them while in office. Think Anthrax.
Once Cheney is no longer armed and dangerous, and a large number of the Thugs in Congress are wiped away, it will be possible, nay, mandatory to investigate the crimes of this misAdministration, It's worth a RICO investigation. And impeachment is a good first step that direction, by establishing that malfeasance had occurred. But the Justice Department will need a complete overhaul before we can trust it again.
And that will have to wait until after 1.20.09.
My question is: can impeachment be brought if the next pResident pardons them?
Once Bush, Cheney, Rice, etc. are out of office, can they be brought to trial by other legal means? What court would/could try them for "war crimes?" Isn't some court in Germany attempting to try Rumsfeld? How's that going? My guess is not very well, sigh.
Go MoveOn.org if you'd like. But I'm going to push for impeachment until January 2009.
Our constitution demands we uphold the rule of law and impeach.
can we move on yet?
"so?"
