Dick Cheney Tour Sparks Iran War Rumours
Dick Cheney, the US vice-president, has triggered speculation that he has been using a tour of the Middle East to prepare Iran's neighbours for a possible war with Tehran. Mr Cheney, whose nine-day tour has included stops in Turkey, the Gulf and Afghanistan, insisted that Iran must not be allowed to develop nuclear weapons.
"The important thing to keep in mind is the objective that we share with many of our friends in the region, and that is that a nuclear-armed Iran would be very destabilising for the entire area," Mr Cheney told ABC News before arriving in Kabul, the Afghan capital, after a visit to Oman.
Challenged on the recent National Intelligence Estimate by US intelligence officials, which concluded that Iran's nuclear weapons programme stopped in late 2003 because of international pressure, Mr Cheney said: "What it says is that they have definitely had in the past a programme to develop a nuclear warhead - that it would appear that they stopped that weaponisation process in 2003.
"We don't know whether or not they've restarted. What we do know is that they had then, and have now, a process by which they're trying to enrich uranium, which is the key obstacle they've got to overcome in order to have a nuclear weapon. They've been working at it for years."
A senior aide to Mr Cheney was forced to deny that the nine-day trip to Turkey and the Middle East was part of a strategy by the vice-president to build support for military action against Iran.
Asked by journalists travelling on Mr Cheney's plane about the vice-president's repeated comments about Iran during his tour, the aide said: "That's not what these discussions are about."
The official acknowledged that Mr Cheney's talks with the Oman government focused on "the concerns we have about the full range of their [Iran's] activities".
These included the country's links to the radical Hamas authorities in Gaza and Washington's belief that Iran has become the dominant power in Lebanon through its sponsorship of Hizbollah.
General Dan McNeill, the US commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan, told The Daily Telegraph in September that advanced weapons smuggled across the Iran border to the Taliban could only have come with the complicity of the Iranian government or elements within its security services.

Show AllReporter: ..."75% of the people are against the war." Dick Cheney, smiling "So?". Impeachment now, it's long overdue, throw him in jail and throw away the key. Dickhead/Deathhead Cheney looks like he is going to die soon enough anyway, so he wants one last war. Why would anyone believe one word that comes out of his mouth? He lied us into the war and most everything else he has said in the last 7 years has been a lie. Send him back to that man-sized safe in his office (or is that where they keep Bin Laden and only let him out to make videos when the Republicans are down in the polls?)
Big Oil war spin presented by Cheney never seems to stop.
Just recently right here on CD in the article, "Why Did the U.S. Invade Iraq ?", Jim Lobe stated:
" The problem, however, is that there is little or no evidence that Big Oil, an extremely cautious beast in the global corporate menagerie, favoured a war,"
Documents acquired via a Judicial Watch FOI request on the secret Bush/Cheney energy meetings prior to 9/11 indicate otherwise:
" This suggests that Big Oil, through the Cheney task force, was involved with top administration officials in discussions about getting control of oil in Iraq, even as the administration was drawing up plans for an
invasion. Since Big Oil has sought to distance itself from the administration's decision to invade Iraq, this apparent involvement certainly helps explain the otherwise baffling level of secrecy
surrounding the task force."

And what is Cheney doing in Kabul besides chatting with the old UNOCAL represnetative Karzai ?
Afghanistan is the pipeline route American oil corporations prefer to market Central Asian oil and natural gas to India and Asia. Iran, on the other hand, is in a perfect position to run pipelines from the Caspian Sea and Turkmenistan to the same markets that Big Oil covets.
Hence the DOD is once again acting as military muscle for the oil industry. But this time around they are destroying the American economy in the process with no end in sight. This is public debt for private profit via the Whitehouse and Congress.
How about having some of those oil executives and Cheney (and others) answer to an international court concerning war crimes ?
FAR KINGS COME
We've a few nukes. We're capable and are destabilizing a few places and folks!
the Dick sez: "...the objective that we share with many of our friends in the region, and that is that a nuclear-armed Iran would be very destabilising for the entire area."
But a couple hundred thousand U.S. boots trampling all over the "entire area" are not a bit "destabilizing."
One can only hope that the Middle Eastern oligarchs that Cheney visited with told him politely that the "Emperor wears no clothes," and that he and his cronies (which include some of them) should take their money and run. Even better would have been a reaction of "Are you insane?"
This is deja vu all over again. It's way too easy to predict what cheney has planned for Iran but no one is willing to challenge him.
[Asked by journalists travelling on Mr Cheney's plane about the vice-president's repeated comments about Iran during his tour, the aide said: "That's not what these discussions are about."]
With this administration, again, it's too easy to predict. It's usually the exact opposite of what they say. Of course, it's what the discussions were about. "We're going into Iran; you're either with us or against us, your
choice."
Here's what our wordsmith of a president said exactly 2 years ago today: "If the Iranians were to have a nuclear (pronounced nucular) weapon they could proliferate."
The title under the photo op for this ongoing Cheney/Neocon anti-Iran campaign should run something like, "Now that Iran is no longer a US/British colony, having escaped the Shah of Iran and his ilk, and having nationalized all that oil that we and Britain wanted to keep our dipsticks in, that, um, nuclear technology that we (the U.S. leading the way, along with France and Germany) pushed on Iran 50 years ago under the Atoms for Peace program should be recalled. Cuz you can only trust a country that's under your thumb, for as long as they are under your thumb, and when they escape your thumb/boot heel/etc., that 'safe civilian transfer of nuclear technology' becomes a threat to stability and peace in the region and the world.
Huh?
Oh, I guess there's a clear distinction between civilian and military nuclear technology only when our allies have the technology; otherwise it's a terrorist plot. Fade out, theme music...Bomb Bomb Iran.
Them Oilygarchs is sittin on haystacks of $100 bills. Every month, them haystacks is gettin' tradable fer less and less luxury goodies. Iran's settin' up to sell oil in different coloured bits of paper, like Yens and Euros, just like Iraq was, and that reduces the demand for, and purchasing power of, US green haystacks. So, hate to be the pessimist, NateW, but I reckon them Oilygarchs got stuff (luxury stuff!) on their minds, and aren't inviting the Veep in for a visit so'z they can tell him that everyone knows he's nekked... But it would be cool if they did...
America's economic elites are seeing their world financial control diminish rapidly and shift elsewhere. In addition trillions of oil dollars are flowing to the Middle East, Africa, and South America. American economic hegemony is falling apart. Borrowing from China will only exacerbate the problem. While shifting our military influence from Europe to the Middle East, Africa, and China, America's ability to support 750 military bases to impose it's influence is threatened by economic collapse at home. The danger of oil being sold for Euro's instead of Dollars is likely motivating Cheney's visits. Securing the Saudi's promise to keep trading oil for dollars in exchange for containing the Iranians is the most likely explanation for Cheney's trip. It almost certainly portends a military action against Iran. It guarantees a national draft. It further swells the pockets of republican defense contractors and private contractors like Blackwater. It diminishes the capacity of the next Democratic President to accomplish any serious domestic goals. Finally it could ignite a broader Middle East war. The Elites will stop at nothing to retain their money and power. America be damned in the process. Our feckless politicians will march right over the cliff. The job of the American people is not to follow them and not to allow your sons and daughters to be sacrificed upon the alter of greed.
October surprise.
Ha, ha, ha. October surprise indeed! It's this kind of shit, going on in the background while we all fall in love with the idea of change/getting rid of Bush/finally talking about racism, that should make us all remember who we are dealing with. If I was 100% cynic, instead of about 30% like I am, I would say we are all incredibly stupid to think that Bush and company, after all that they have accomplished - and they have accomplished a hell of a lot that was on their agenda - would allow the American people to elect a left-leaning Black President who will most likely lead us slowly back into a more human version of American politics and socio-economic policy. That's like assuming American corporate CEO's will take a pay cut for the betterment of their workforce. Come on!
Woops, forgot to add my main point. We can't forget that these corrupt bums would not think twice about halting or stopping altogether the elections, if they saw a "clear and present danger" from Iran.
cheney'll have to have a bigger false flag operation than 9/11 to get people on board of that fiasco. I suppose they can bomb away, but occupation is impossible without a draft. forget it. cheney will have to blow up portland and blame OBL and OBL will have to be served up in some sort of cyber video speech taking credit. of course, all that has happened so far without cheney's imprisonment is truly stunning and should give us all pause... never doubt the power of dick cheney to 'get shit done'!
Likely an October surprise.
Bush sets it up for Mccain to win.
In the photo, Cheney looks as sick physically as he is mentally. How in the world can we expect a psychopath NOT to behave like a psychopath; that's like asking a lion to behave like a lamb. And the LAST THING a dedicated psychopath is going to do is self-reflect compassionately and honestly.
Obviously, there are still many in this country who share the Bush-Cheney sickness. After all, this dynamic [evil] duo received much support for most of their tenure. It's time for ALL of us to look seriously in the mirror and see if and how we, personally, are aiding and abetting the status quo.
The guy does look sickly. That's what you get for hanging out in a bunker/cave with bin Laden.
Read Greg Palast's ARMED MADHOUSE. It explains why the war in Iraq is a success as far as OPEC (Saudi Arabia) is concerned. The purpose of the war is about oil, but not to get Iraq oil flowing in the pipelines, but to shut it off. This will cause the price of Arabian oil to soar. I thought Palast's book was paranoid nonsense when I read it, but $4.00 gasoline has caused me to change my opinion. The war with Iran will be about oil too, but not to turn it on but to turn it off.
Cat here...
What parent in their right mind would leve this degenerate clown with their children....let alone WMD??...Duh! our government is the treat to the world and it runs on...What?....Debt right now...and who have they designated to pay for their corp.corruptions, global debauchery, planetary mutilation and the wars that kill everyones children? It's going to be ...you! What if you just took care of your own needs and the needs of your neighbors...just take your little ball and go home...who's going to feed the bully when you don't have any lunch money? Think small...less is best....connect...maybe we could incorporate as "We The People Inc" then bankrupt ourselves and start over without them. :)
Let's be completely honest with ourselves, Dick Cheney breathing sparks Iran war rumours.
We all know that Cheney wants this and won't stop trying to get it. What we need to ask ourselves is what are the obstacles which have impeded Cheney's progress in starting the Iran war.
Anyone seen the updated version of Lies that Led to War yet - the one that compares the Iran strategy with the Iraq strategy?

This mealy-mouthed piece of shit and his pet monkey are running out of time. They promised to deliver the pipeline right-of-ways
and to protect them forever with American Troops. What will the Corporate corrupters of American politicans do if they don't get what they paid for?
McCain and lip reading master puppetter Lieberman the true mole and possible VP is visiting all the the right places Preeepared with GREAT media coverage at every stop and the doors pre opened to heads of state like he is the President already.

All of the foregoing above really emphasizes the wisdom of IMPEACHING CHENEY FIRST!!!
Dennis Kucinich really knew what he was doing. When will some of the dunderheads on the House Judiciary Committee wake up?

""The important thing to keep in mind is the objective that we share with many of our friends in the region, and that is that a nuclear-armed Iran would be very destabilising for the entire area," Mr Cheney told ABC News before arriving in Kabul, the Afghan capital, after a visit to Oman."
I think they mean he was engaged in Onanism...if he thinks a nuclear-Iran would 'destabilize' anything (actually, such a thing is nearly-required to BRING Stability to the ME...but 'don't hold your breath').
[The Truth is that the 'revolution' in Iran in 1979 was as rigged by the CIA for American/'nearby'-Interests as the BS there in 1953. Iran was 'selected/groomed' as a "rationalization and replacement for the 'commies' as our new cold-warrior Enemy" to justify all the other crap we intend to do a-r-o-u-n-d Iran -- not 'against-it' (Ineedajob is as much a creature/asset of the Brit/US Intel's as Osama-was [or Saddam] -- all 'fears of war/enmity' with our 'stooged'-Iran is just the same/re-hashed crappola provided by a compliant-USSR during our LAST 'cold war' and continues in the vein of diverse 'proxy-wars' like Vietnam and Korea -- now Afghanistan/Iraq, and soon, Syria/Lebanon/Kurds&'northward').
Don't 'sweat' for Iran -- they know whence 'their bread is buttered' (Persians always-have!).
Time for Mr. Cheney to go. He really does look unwell, doesn't he? Sorry Dick, I'm not in the habit of wishing death on anyone, but you've outlived your time here. Time for you to go. Soon....
I think we'll get along just fine without you.
Cheney Impeachment Not Off the Table
By Ray McGovern, Consortium News. Posted March 21, 2008.
The path to impeachment is clear. Democrats just need to show a little courage.
Democrats? Courage? Cheney's safe.
Me too also a Realist ---
"The Truth is that the 'revolution' in Iran in 1979 was as rigged by the CIA for American/'nearby'-Interests as the BS there in 1953. I don't think so----Look at who benefitted---- In the UK at the time, unemploynment was at over 20%--- The country had borrowed all the world would lend it----Oil was at $8/bbl and the UK had just finished all the development expenditures for the first segment of North Sea Oil--- The Ayatolla Ruholla Komenhi was in France, but had been supported for many years by a stipend from the British secret service. Britain was our Ally, and we saw an opportunity to okay what they wanted to do. The Shah was fully armed (bought from us)didn't need more(his purchases from US arms producers were drying up) and he was beginning to frighten some of the rest of the oil producers in the area (read SA) The only way for the Brits to benefit from their North Sea Oil was for prices to rise---- Someone said OK. Do it. within weeks Iran was flooded with (the then state of the art information transfer-- cassette tapes--- Who could have done this? Certainly not komehni) but British Diplomats???? Immune from examination???? The only way for Oil prices to rise was for a major producer to come off line--- It happened---- in the confusion of the Revolution--- Iranian production fell by more than 2/3. The first "oil shock" hit the West---- prices for crude more than tripled---North Sea Oil became a valuable commodity--- and the British economy was re-floated and stabilized--- The Shah got his come-uppance and we moved right into the more recent Mid east era----This may even explain why the Blair government supported the Chimp in Charge in the Iraq debacle.---- a favor owed.
The only tune this band can play...
Bush erroneously says Iran announced desire for nuclear weapons
Thu Mar 20, 7:13 PM ET
WASHINGTON— President Bush contended that Iran has "declared they want a nuclear weapon to destroy people" and that the Islamic Republic could be hiding a secret program.
Abraham Foxman gave him lying lessons.
Cheney: Somewhere you lost your soul!
Is he dead yet? He looks almost there. It's going to be mighty hot in his next place of residence.
The good news is if Shotgun Dick says anything you KNOW that it isn't true. The bad news is the truth could be ANYTHING else.
The bastard does look sick. Every person brings joy to the world, some by their arrival and some by their departure.
The 2008 coup de etat is coming via the GOP stealing another election. McCain & Cheney are both in the ME because they need to stealthily plan the coup w/ out the prying eyes of any person not in the loop. All the tricks the GOP used in 2000 and 2004 will be trotted out again for McCain, & so it is in the Middle East that Cheney is transferring the most secret tricks to the McCain campaign. Any maneuver that was not discovered in the past two presidential elections have been in place for months now. McCain & Cheney are only tapping the nails into the coffin of the American election system. Please don't read anything regarding the 2008 presidential election, America, reading & learning may interrupt your eating & lounging.
My guess is that as the rest of the world watches the U.S. fall into an economic depression (hyperinflation, collapsing dollar, zeroed out entitlement programs, run-on-the banks) they'll want no part of our future, and steer in an opposite and accelerating direction.
The spoils of the Iraq war went not to America nor its allies, but the Chinese who recently renegotiated a billion dollar oil deal.
You can fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
Likely Penguin went to the Middle East to crack a bribe for a timely oil output "surge" to lower gasoline prices and thereby benefit the Repuk outlaw party round bout election time. Penguin may also be extracting financial favors/paybacks from rich Saudis to put off the collapse of the US economy until after Demoks are elected so as to blame it on them.
Oil, Black Gold, Texas tea.....well the first thing you know old Jed's a millionaire... and moved to Beverly....California that is.
Awe c'mon, Iraq and Iran 2'nd and 3rd largest OIL reserves in the World.
Dickhead is representing- Haliburton, Kellogg Brown and Root and Blackwater on this trip.
There will be blood and it will be before Bush leaves office.
The way McCain coolly jets off here and there ... while Clinton/Obama take center stage at home by the Houdini-like distractions of Mainstream blitz ... he doesnt need press attention, the Republic is behind him at the end of the summer; an aura of such assurance that would be uncanny if not perfectly clear that he is Heir to America, Inc.
On the other hand, perhaps THEY know what they're doing in the longrun (100 years). The "New American Century" posits warfare as means to end of control of ME energy market.
While red blood for black gold may seem unfair to the region's civilian population, it could work out to the benefit of the capitalist global economy at large; USD is the currency foundation of the 20th century empire.
I personally (as an Iranian living in Iran), wouldnt mind seeing the theocratic dogs here go down, nor would I mind seeing Baghdad, Kabul, and Islamabad slowly evolve into Istanbul/Dubai standards of modernisation. If Iran gets Cheney's brand of "liberalization" peppering its skies, and that is what it takes to "import democracy" overnight (or even as long as ten years), then so be it.
America is smarter than we give it credit for nowadays. Look at the history to see the future.
Cheney is worried about a nuclear-armed Iran destabilizing the Middle East? Nothing could be more destabilizing for the region than what the US has already done in Iraq, and Cheney's plans for permanent US military bases there. The manipulations of the US government in the Middle East have been the root of terrorism. I say let's get out, and institute a new foreign policy of understanding and fair trade with the region. Why should Israel be the only nuclear power in the region. By the way, let's start new nuclear disarmament talks with all existing nuclear powers too, and this time keep up our end of the bargain.
Ralph Nader wrote a piece on Countepunch today. He retells an interview where Martha Raddatz asks Cheney about polls saying 2/3 of Americans now think Iraq was a mistake... His reply was basically no, he's our great leader, and our collective opinion is irrelevant.
So the neocons have stolen the republican party, stolen the white house twice, pretended it was a mandate, and now that their original support is fading, they tell us they are great leaders.
These guys are arrogant (and stupid) enough to bomb Iran.
No (he doesn't care)
No - he dosesn't care what we think
CD, please save me from waves of nausea and leave out his picture on the article.
If anyone doubts whether we Americans are ruled by a fascist government, and if anyone believes we have a democratic form of government, just remember what Cheney said.
He doesn't care what the majority of Americans want, and gave the smart-aleck arrogant answer "So?" when told that the majority of Americans want the Iraq fiasco ended.
rtdrury,@#$%^&@#$%^&*........... PENGUIN ! sweet! Thanks, such a depressing thread yet you made me laugh out loud. Thanks, impeach for peace
I wish our "leaders" (God it makes me sick everytime I think that Cheney and Bush represent the American people to the rest of the World) would stop treating the American people like children and start treating us like adults and just give it to us straight, the majority of us would probably still go along with them, unforturnately, because of our morally sick society...the proof is we elected them twice so we must be a morally sick society.
I hope the younger generation is less morally sick than the over 30s who voted for Bush and Cheney, and somehow by miracle get Obama elected.
Anyway the truth is Iran already controls Southern Iraq...the Basra region and the oil there, they will control all of Iraq as soon as we pull out, which we have to do eventually, because at 10 billion a month in variable costs and another 10 -20 billion per month later on in clean up costs, this war is bankrupting us, if we want to control the oil we have to control Iran too.
We may bomb Iran before the election however Control of Iran will only happen if McCain gets elected, assuming we decide to wipe out the Iranian population with genocide, and most likely we will as we've done it in Iraq... cause Obama is going to pull us out and Hillary will just make a mess of things trying to pull us out but not really doing so, she's incompetent when it comes to war stuff, though I love her on healthcare.
Obama has decided to screw the oil and go green for our energy, he's decided stealing their oil is not worth it and we'll lose anyway,... McCain like Hillary have their heads in the sands when it comes to Geopolitics so they just listen to the neocons..and will make a bad situation worse.
Either we Americans decide to go for the oil like our current evil dictators want, with all the evil that goes with that choice or we go green and change America... there is the choice before the American people today, which choice will we make???? SUVs or bicycles?
Hmmm. What else has been "very destabilising for" our friends in the region...?
They are holding three times as many dollars that are worth 1/3 as much and the Islamic world is on the brink of implosion, the US is bankrupt, risk and uncertainty reign as chaos stands in the wings. What can Cheney be saying that would interest these people? That he's going to further cripple the US and hand the world to them on a silver platter?
Should it surprise anyone that the people who brought you the Iraq war are ginning up the case for the retention of their power beyond '09? Why would they countenance democracy in the US, an old fashioned impediment to a unitary executive and corporate power. These are the guys who for years preached the evils of communism, and then, when we were busy watching the tv, put the nation in hock to the communist Chinese. Nice. And don't let any God fearing American try to obtain a Cuban cigar. It's becoming too much to bear.
Cheney has been proved to be a liar over the years. Yet, he is still treated with reverence by the press.
"Amazing how effective he is," they say.
Well, it's true in part because the press is still not doing its job. With any quote from Cheney, there should be a disclaimer about the reliability of the information as presented by Cheney.
History shows decisively that the reliability of "information" coming out of Cheney's mouth is exactly zero, and it should be assumed to be false. That it is not treated as such proves lingering illness in the press -- still a very long way from showing spine and doing a proper job as check on power.
