US Police Crack Down on Iraq Rallies
More than 200 people were arrested across the United States as protesters marked the fifth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.
There were 32 arrests in Washington on Wednesday night, after demonstrators tried to block entrances to the Internal Revenue Service, while 30 others were arrested outside a congressional office building, police said.
Protesters had hoped to shut down the IRS, the US tax collection agency, to highlight the cost of the war. Police cleared the building's entrances within an hour.
In San Francisco, long a centre of anti-Iraq war sentiment, police arrested 143 who protested through the day along Market Street, in the central business district. Sergeant Steve Maninna said charges included trespassing, resisting arrest and obstructing traffic.
Four women were detained for hanging a large banner off the city's famous Golden Gate Bridge and then released, said bridge spokeswoman Mary Currie.
On Washington's National Mall, about 100 protesters carried signs that read: "The Endlessness justifies the Meaninglessness" and waved upside-down US flags, a traditional sign of distress.
"Bush and Cheney, leaders failed, Bush and Cheney belong in jail," they chanted, referring to President George Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney.
One hour after the IRS stand-off, several dozen protesters waved signs that read: "Stop Paying to Kill" and "How Much Longer?" as a ragtag brass band played. IRS employees were easily able to enter the building.
"We wanted to put our bodies between the money and what that money goes to fund - the war, the occupation, the bombs," said Frida Berrigan, an organiser with the War Resisters' League.
The war has cost the US $US500 billion ($A548.6 billion) since the invasion to topple Saddam Hussein began in March 2003. Tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed and millions more displaced, with almost 4000 US soldiers killed.
Later, scores of noisy protesters blocked a busy intersection in Washington's business district. They picketed in front of the offices of The Washington Post and threw red paint on the building that houses the Examiner newspaper and Bechtel National Inc, which has handled major reconstruction projects in Iraq.
In New York, about 30 members of the "Granny Peace Brigade" gathered in Times Square, knitting in hand, to demand troops be brought home now.

Show AllA sure sign that the regime knows things are going against it is when they call out the riot squad and order them to "get tough." Expect the police to get nastier as the Iraq fiasco continues to spiral out of control.
It appears that the USA police are a milder version of the SS. First it is night sticks and rubber bullets; who knows what the next step will be. maybe the USA policeman might be abnle to have the right to be a wannabe SS officer. All this is so that Americans can feel safe and secure and to shield itself from consequence and negative karma.
It also seems that "Freedom of Assembly" does not apply everywhere in the USA, nor does freedom of sppech, press, bear arms, and excessive bail and punishment for a crime seems null and void in the USA also. Before the USA judges other nations and wages wars agaisnt them, perhaps they should look at themselves. A typical American is unable to do so as their society embodies hypocrisy and scapegotism.
I just got home from seeing "Sicko", at the film festival where I live and there is a great line in it from one of the Americans in France, at least I think it was an American, who says that in France the government is afraid of the people but in America the people are afraid of the government.
That's got to change if we want to change the policies of our government.
YOU KNOW WHAT? WHERE ARE THE GRADUATES OF MIT AND OTHER INSTITUTIONS WHO'S BELIEFS ARE ALONG THE LINES OF ..OURS..THAT IS TO SAY..PROGRESSIVE AND CONSTITUTIONAL?

4thefuture, that was one of my favorite lines in SiCKO and yes, it was an American in France who said it. I think what will ultimately bring Americans out into the streets is whopping inflation, lost jobs and stagnant wages. Ever since Vietnam I learned that what Americans care most about is the condition of their wallets. That is what they really pay attention to.
I've been reading elsewhere on CD that officials have been underreporting dropout rates in schools, and even encouraging students to drop out rather than drag down test scores required by No Child Left Behind. Two towns in Massachusetts are considering privatizing their libraries and we know where that will go. Here in Lane County Oregon, if you live out of town, you have to pay $80 a year to use Eugene's library. They refuse to have a county wide library system. The haves and have mores are taking more and more away from the have nots. Just like George wants it.
And now Obama is getting swiftboated over Reverend Wright. The press reported that Hillary "took the lead" in the polls, but of course, all that happened was that people pulled away from Obama. But they don't have any problem with McCain's relationship with his fascist minister, and according to Gallup is now ahead of Obama and Hillary. It's like living in an insane asylum.

Bumper sticker that's been around for ages, at least in more rural areas of the US..... "I love my country, but I fear my government."
The thing that struck me was the difference in media coverage between the Chinese police beating and arresting protesters and the US police beating and arresting protesters.
Bumper sticker: "Who Would Jesus Waterboard?"
or did you see... "Republicans for Voldemort!"
I think one of the sad things is that the demonstrations were small enough that the cops thought they could arrest with such impunity.
If we were able to reach out to the majority that is against the war and built bigger demonstrations the police would not have been able to be as repressive.
No - I'm not saying this was any fault of us demonstrators, but we do need to change to be more effective.
My copy of the Constitution omits the part of The First Amendment that says we have the right to peacefully assemble - as long as we don't mind having the crap beat out of us.
This form of terror works. Fewer people turn out all the time for these things, in part because they don't want to be hit with nightsticks.
That's a nation which permits himself to give the whole world advice regarding democracy.
The USA on the way to a fascist state. Freedom for Expression of Opinion.
Bush, puppet and wicked as his pathologically lying mind is, said: 'They hate our freedom', 'They hate our democracy', 'They are terrorists who want to destroy our great way of life', ..., or basically these words anyway.
He was right, except he pretended that the 'they' are foreigners, when that 'they' [is] the Bush-Cheney administration and the real, but hidden ruling elites of the U.S. govt, these 'Great Corruptors', ....
Of course he could speak like an expert; he was speaking of his administration and the U.S. govt's ruling elites. They should know plenty about themselves. Like brats committing wrongs, they always say "it wasn't (or isn't) me, it was that person over there, he's the one always committing wrongful acts". Bloody brats; and cowards.
Arresting peaceful people for hanging a banner on a bridge? Arresting peaceful and respectful 'Grannies'? Arresting peaceful people just because they tell the truth? What happened to the so-called great freedom in the USA?
The greatest enemies of the USA are ruling the U.S. govt, [obviously].
Freedom, Bush, Cheney, ... lustfully enjoy, when it only applies to or for themselves, and whoever else they choose to share it with.
Initially, I didn't understand why people compared the Bush-Cheney regime to Hitler and his Nazi regime, and this led me to learning more about that history; after which it became an obviously and awfully fitting comparison. That, however, is while also putting aside some very interesting and actually credible revisionist history, for when considering that, then ... woe, the Bush-Cheney regime seems to be actually WORSE.
Crumb's Rant is Right On. An Excellent example of Rational Thinking. But no one picking up on it, huh? No one willing to touch it with a ten foot pole because:
1) we are all hoping that this nightmare will suddenly disappear when the "democrats" take over in January. and
2) magically pass laws outlawing the fascist behaviour increasingly obvious to those paying attention. and
3) because we are secretly scared shitless, as we have been since our childhood horror of atomic war....
Truth is, there are very few rational, brave, conscientious volunteers willing to suffer ANY LOSS of their entitlements for the good of a society which has sinned so long and so complicitly and so abjectly that it is no longer capable of self-righting actions. Of course this thinking is self defeating. Which is why we are where we are: the machines have won our allegiance, love and trust, and mere humans are to be crushed and mauled and cheated and exterminated until ...........................we wise up. Have a good day.
Violence is the tool of choice for the ineffective and feebleminded
The BushCheneyWarMongers know that the overwhelming majority of Americans are opposed to the war and they are reacting using the tool of violence.
I wonder how the American Gestapo will act when the ILWU go on strike Mayday on the West Coast. It should prove interesting. Unions are the lifeblood of American workers and if the ILWU are clubbed and beaten, you can believe the the fecal matter will hit the rotating blades.
The Unions are very organized and will come up with solutions to stop this illegal, immoral occupation of Iraq.
Give the cops Anybody who is standing on a sidewalk instead of walking on it and you're going to get another sample action of an institution that truly seems to love best the shitheads we all grew up with in school, the mean guys, the fight starters, the dumb.
We Must require that our police force have, minimum, a bachelor's degree with a heightened requirement in the humanities and the arts.
It's time to get rid of these cops who squeak through high school, go to the military to testosterone it up for a few years only to come back thinking Everybody on the street is the asshole. Hey, I'm a nice guy even though I am a longhair!
I've been patted down on my own desolate street twice in the last month for existing. Little fingers probing around my dick because some cop is bored. The American people aren't the enemy but most cops don't know that. Who else are these soldiers going to have as an enemy if not us?
Why fear our government? Isn't that what they want? Doesn't that describe a bully (the government)? If you're afraid of your bullying leaders, they've won. Okay, let's all be fearful and do nothing.
Another "purported" Bin Laden video airs one day after Bush's approval ratings hit a new low.
Another series of suspiciously convinient coincidences.

It's not that we missed the point of his rant...it's that we ignored his entire post completely. We've told him time and time again not to scream at us.
From the article:

""We wanted to put our bodies between the money and what that money goes to fund - the war, the occupation, the bombs," said Frida Berrigan, an organiser with the War Resisters' League."

My comments:
If one's aim is to disrupt the IRS confiscation of wealth for purposes one disapproves, one should write letters to appropriate members of Congress, (one representative, two senators) and whichever terminal sphincter currently stinks up the Oval Office.
Content of the letter to describe in your own words that you understand your only way of reducing your monetary input to whateveryoudon'tlike is to dramatically reduce your consumption.
Say you have decided to stop all optional consumption.
Also say you will convince as many others as possible to do the same.
If the recipients of your letters do not understand the impact of your intended action there will be someone available to explain it.
If you want to understand it yourself, find an economics text and dig it out. Very simply, the effect on the "economy" of your intentional failure to spend is a multiple of the amount you don't spend as it reduces gross income in some small way for others in the consumption chain.
As incomes are reduced, tax receipts are reduced.
The best parts: Nobody watches you not spend; you can do it in the privacy of your home. AND -- The coercion to spend is primarily television ads and peer pressure. Nobody will hold a gun to your head.
At least not so far.
For fargokantrowitz who wrote:
"We Must require that our police force have, minimum, a bachelor's degree with a heightened requirement in the humanities and the arts."
Better we should require crowd control police to be unarmed and unarmored. Let them persuade demonstrators the error of their ways using the power of superior intellect and/or better information.
Nice one for the demonstrators to point out the links between IRS and Iraq war. The Bush and Cheney military corpsefest machine does not seem to care where the economy is going. They are trying to bluff their way into continued subjugation of the Middle East, with Iran still being the current target. Like playing a game of strip poker and sitting in your underwear, the bluff is becoming thread bare. The corpsefest machine (war profiteering corporations) doesn't feel the pain of the occupied, and doesn't feel the pain of the domestic victims of the sinking economy. It appears that the Corpsefest Machine is specifically designed to suck in wealth and human well being from every where and destroy it. It is the shining pinnacle of right wing politics, a maximum entropy generating machine, as if the struggle for existance was not enough. The Corpsefest machine must needs be driven by an idiot, which is way Obama will not qualify for US presidency. I am not sure about Mrs Clinton being idiotic enough, but Mr McCain probably fits the bill, since he , on behalf of the Corpsefest beneficiaries, will leave the machine turned on to wreck havoc for another one hundred years. Thank goodness he may drop dead much sooner than that. My prediction is the Corpsefest machine will tear itself apart into lots of smaller corpsfest machines doing the same thing on a smaller scale, as the human world shatters into anarchy, as long range military interventions, apart from current nuclear missile stocks, become impractical as massive logistic support becomes financially and materially impossible.
hedology ...
"Nice one for the demonstrators to point out the links between IRS and Iraq war."
I thought most of the money was borrowed (at taxpayers' and future taxpayers' expense). As long as the corporations are skimming off their 30% everything is going according to plan. If you want to be near your money, take a hike to Dubai.
What right do the police have to beat anyone with their clubs if the protesters aren't being violent with them? If they want to arrest them, I guess that's their job, but they don't need to beat up people. Isn't that called police brutality? Does the police department pay for the medical bills? It looks like the man on the ground got hit with a club and maybe suffered a concussion.
Actually, 'real' costs of the war are about 5 Billion a week. 5 years, times 52 weeks, times 5 Billion equals 1 Trillion 300 Billion ... and counting!!!!!!!!!
I think there's one part of the puzzle this discussion has been missing.
One reason attendance at demonstrations is low is because I think most Americans have correctly divined that such a protest has absolutely no chance of impacting the policy of the American govt.
I think many more people would brave the risk of getting hit with a SS nightstick IF, and its a big IF, they thought it would make a difference. Look back at the pre-war protests in 2003 when massive crowds came out. The one thing those crowds could at least hope was that by turning out in big numbers that they might change the course of events.
Today ... we all know damn well the Bush administration isn't listening. And, we also know that by and large the Democrats aren't listening. You see very few Democratic politicians as speakers at these events. Both Obama and Hillary seemed to have avoided them like they were the plague. And no one except maybe a rare back-bencher that's a Democrat in Congress will ever give a speech.
And its also clear that the Democrats in office have no intention of changing their policy of supporting and continuing this war. Its clear that no matter how many people get out in the streets, the Democrats are committed to continuing this war. Its clear that the Democrats call us 'idiot liberals' should any of the views of protesters against the war ever making inside their palace walls. Its clear that they are not listening. Its clear that they think of the American people as people to be lied to or manipulated instead of as participants in a democracy.
So, why go to a protest? You can do it for personal reasons. You can do it because it makes you feel better. You can do it because you think you have to do something. But, right now, you really can't do it with any real expectation that it will change anything.
I think that has more to do with the low turnout at protests more than anything the police are doing.
What could be different?
What if the antiwar movement was clearly and with one voice telling the Democrats that either they start taking actions to end this war now, or the antiwar voters are not voting Democrat in the fall. That would be a reason for people to turn out in numbers. Because then they could believe that just perhaps the numbers could mean something. Deliver a strong message to all the Congressional Democrats and Obama and Hillary that says 'Take action NOW! Or you will lose in November.' One could believe that if there's a million people in the streets delivering that message that it might just spur some politicians into acting. Because the only way to really get a politician's attention is to threaten their jobs.
Its just a thought. Basically ask the question, what could be done differently that makes people think its worth the time and effort to get out and protest? What could really make a difference?
Who was the first to decide to make "our" country fascist?
China only shows the minimal Tibetan violence against Chinese, a very small percentage of the total violence there, and none of the Chinese violence against Tibetans. US Media only shows people in clown costumes or gives a traffic report on anti-war protests. Both are obvious forms of manipulating the media. In case you needed any further proof Cheney doesn't care about the people of the US, his answer to a question about 75% of the people being against the war was "So?". Spoken like the true bloodless, soulless, heartless, corporate officer with a calculator in place of a heart that he is.
Cheney is right not to care what the people think. His oath of office wasn't to please the people but to defend the constitution of the United States. He is uncaring, but that is his right. He is a criminal and should be in jail, if not executed.
Jeevee: Who was the first to decide to make our country fascist?
In my opinion, it was Lincoln.
If you want to stop oil wars. Stop oil.

Great post above by JCRUMB---Compared with the ruthlessness of the Right, the Left does seem lame. Time to get very creatively aggressive without committing "crimes" that feed media dismissals...
We all know if you are honest that if you don't move when a cop tells you to move you get arrested and if the cop is in a bad mood from whatever or your tone of voice is angry you probably will get beat.
This will happen like if it is a protest or your own wedding or at school.
If you thought that your goin to a protest would end the war you are very very young or just not all there.
This struggle is long long term and if you don't have the patience to fight it long term you will just complain and do nothing but act tough and try to convince others to get violent (sound familiar?) while you hide behind your keyboard handle and talk revolution while you talk your self and others into being scared of the Nazis.
Anyone who blocks traffic or any public place is asking to be arrested and gets points from those who stay home and tell us to be afraid, very afraid.
Mainly protest is symbolic and if you are protesting for peace, the sight of cops arresting you will just make the public think you are a trouble maker trying to get peace points. If you are blocking traffic you will just make the public tryin to go to work and might agree with you until you get in their way, make them wait and think "What the fuck do these idiots think they are gonna do.. End the war by pissing off the public?".
We had a great protest in front of the Federal building yesterday in Tampa and because we were careful not to block traffic or piss off the Cops, we had a good Peace demonstration.
It gave the public a good feeling about the peace movement and we even got great sympathetic stories in the main papers and TV.
Aren't we Bad!
Several of you posted that JCrumb's post was a good one. I find it hard to read the screaming, all caps text so I had skipped it. But after reading that it was a good post, I copied it and pasted it into word and changed the case to the sentence case and read it.
He presents a number of provocative ideas. I do think that the kind of people who might be interested in the paramilitary aspects of the counterpro websites are more likely to attract the rightwing militia types than progressive peaceniks, both as initiators and as users. I would expect that the powers that be would be all over such a website with serious scrutiny, thereby discouraging many potential customers.
I also think that the airline idea might fly perhaps but only on the takeoff. It would be a whole lot less satisfying on the landing, should there even be a place that would allow the aircraft to put down. Nevertheless, these are the kinds of ideas that should be thought about, talked about and winnowed until the viable and effective ones remain and are then implemented.
Thanks to jcrumb for the contents of his post but not for the form. Please get rid of the ALL CAPS and no paragraphs and more people will read what you have to say as the content is more important than whatever point you are trying to make with the form.
Its a good thing we live in a free country....like The Soviet Union and China (chuckling)

Little difference IMHO between Rev. Wrights remarks, and the crazys on the right like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Dobson, How often did Bush, Chaney have to apologize for their remarks?? and there were a lot more of them, they wished huricanes on us, remember, I like Rev. Wright, I don't see God blessing this administration for making war on nations that never attacked us.

Other than truth, you mean?
j crumb -- well, you have the right spirit -- and 'all caps' is a good guerilla tactic --
like the attitude --
but i had just been thinking along those lines --
you ought to be legally able to wear a riot gear suit in public -- so...how bout a riot suit with a big peace emblem front and back -- the words 'non-violent protester' screened on in several locations, lots of padding, air filtration -- people wearing these could resist maybe 'some' degree of tear gas, tasering, etc.. --- have minimal protection against physical assault --
be very noticeable to news media -- can you picture a group of even ten or twelve at an event -- they would automatically be the ones photographed, and knowing this, cops would be under orders to 'proceed with caution' --
and your purpose at an event would be clear start to finish with the words printed on your suit, and the emblem, and the notoriety of your group after maybe the first protest
(of course, the cops might proceed with zero caution, but that would be an obvious decision -- and the point would be to attend a protest and have the best possible odds of not getting hurt or run out or, for that matter, arrested the moment you arrive)
Golddogs, you had to go to, of all places, Wikipedia to know of Kent? Picture still in my head, the college girl, her hand outstretched towards the heavens, the other on the dying body of a young college student.
I guess I am getting old. lillulu, they busted skulls left and right, male or female during the Vietnam protests, no such thing as police brutality, you know that.
This can't be something that ends after one day. We cannot wait till the sixth anniversary to be back in the streets. What are you doing today? Tomorrow?

Cracking heads for the White House.
A government "gone rogue," and the people take to the streets only to be met by clubs, tasers, and handcuffs.
So much for democracy-so much for "We the People." "The Man" is back. And he's swingin' that club for all he's worth!

J D Smith,
I completely agree. I've said this several times here and have never received a response. I guess taking real control (financially) of our lives just isn't sexy enough...or perhaps we're just too scared to.

Lizard: forgot about Lincoln as first fascist, you then made me think about Alexander Hamilton of whom John Roberts and Sam Alito are among his most well-known intellectual heirs.
I originally thought about Freud's nephew in the 1920's as the first American fascist because of his work on thought control and the adoption of his ideas by the elite.
For those of you still fixated on nightsticks and similar old style police brutality, that is just sooo Viet Namish. These day the pigs use TASERS and pepper spray.
You know, Matt Taibbi had it right in 2003. Anti-war protestors should all dress in black. As DKM says, you've got to keep up with the times and adapt your tactics.
Organizers could keep black cloth to cut in 6 foot pieces for people who aren't wearing black to wrap in. I'd add they should sing.
lillulu: Why fear our government? Isn't that what they want?
Yes of course the capitalists hijacking the US government want the rabble to fear them but the rabble believes itself to be above that so the rabble fails to react in like kind. Or maybe as others suggest the rabble is simply afraid. Whatever it is does not change the fact that the capitalists whos consent is required for any auto-reform of their network understand only the language of economic/violent force. Individuals hold the amazing power to participate in exacting economic force upon the capitalists until they break in two. We break them in two by shifting our economic exhcange/association away from them and toward our local communities. Then it will be the capitalists who fear the rabble. This fear is the element that unlies the success of the social democracies.
The Granny Peace Brigade & Code Pink need to carry more rifles. The Second Amendment hasn't been truly tampered w/ by the neo-Hazlitt Bush govorporation, so we ought to start carrying rifles to our demonstrations. Loaded or unloaded, let's bring 'em. Either we need a million people at each demonstration, or we need hundreds or thousands with rifles. We are the standing militia when the government has been replaced by the govorporation.
These comments and conversations would best be done in private places among trusted friends, not in a public space like this - available for any and all to read.
Get organized.
