British Teachers Told to Rewrite History of Iraq War
MoD accused of sending propaganda to schools
Britain's biggest teachers' union has accused the Ministry of Defence of breaking the law over a lesson plan drawn up to teach pupils about the Iraq war. The National Union of Teachers claims it breaches the 1996 Education Act, which aims to ensure all political issues are treated in a balanced way.
Teachers will threaten to boycott military involvement in schools at the union's annual conference next weekend, claiming the lesson plan is a "propaganda" exercise and makes no mention of any civilian casualties as a result of the war.
They believe the instructions, designed for use during classroom discussions in general studies or personal, social and health education (PSE) lessons, are arguably an attempt to rewrite the history of the Iraq invasion just as the world prepares to mark its fifth anniversary.
Steve Sinnott, the general secretary of the NUT, said: "This isn't an attack on the military - nothing of the sort. I know they've done valuable work in establishing peace in some countries. It is an attack on practices that we cannot condone in schools. It is a question of whether you present fair and balanced views or put forward prejudice and propaganda to youngsters."
At the heart of the union's concern is a lesson plan commissioned by an organisation called Kids Connections for the Ministry of Defence aimed at stimulating classroom debate about the Iraq war.
In a "Students' Worksheet" which accompanies the lesson plan, it stresses the "reconstruction" of Iraq, noting that 5,000 schools and 20 hospitals have been rebuilt. But there is no mention of civilian casualties.
In the "Teacher Notes" section, it talks about how the "invasion was necessary to allow the opportunity to remove Saddam Hussein" but it fails to mention the lack of United Nations backing for the war. The notes also use the American spelling of "program".
Addressing whether the MoD should be providing materials for schools, Mr Sinnott said that he did not object, as long as the material was accurate, presented responsibly and contained a balanced view of opinions.
The union has protested to the Schools Secretary, Ed Balls, who has referred the complaint to the MoD. In a letter to Mr Balls, Mr Sinnott said: "I have to say that were the MoD pack to be distributed and followed without the legally required 'balanced presentation of opposing views' there would, in my view, be very serious risk of a finding of non-compliance with section 406 (of the 1996 Education Act) at least.
"I do not doubt that there would be many members of this union who would not accept as 'fact' the assertions made particularly in the Teacher Notes, nor, I think, could some of the assertions made in the Student Worksheet be regarded as non-controversial."
Mr Sinnott reminded Mr Balls that a High Court judge had ruled that the film An Inconvenient Truth, by the Oscar-winning former American vice-president Al Gore, could not be used in schools without teachers counteracting some of the assertions made in it.
Mr Balls sought to distance himself from supporting the material.
He said: "I am sure you are aware my department does not promote or endorse specific resources or methods of teaching for use in schools but I appreciate you drawing this to my attention." Mr Balls added that he had instructed his officials "to take this matter up" with the MoD.
A spokesman for the MoD said the ministry had consulted with interested parties over the proposed lesson plan in order to ensure it had the support of the education community. "We did ask the Stop The War coalition to take part although it refused."
The spokesman added that the programme was "a set of web-based resources" whose use was "completely voluntary".
"We have consulted widely with teachers and students during the development of these products and feedback from schools has been extremely encouraging," he added.
"Teachers and students found them to be valuable and fun resources for applied learning.
"They are designed to support teachers in delivering a whole range of subjects across the national curriculum and its equivalents in Scotland and Wales.
"We are happy to engage with the NUT and we will be writing to them."
Union members say they are also worried that armed forces recruitment fairs in schools glamorise the job by citing exotic countries that recruits will visit but fail to mention that they may be required to kill people.
According to an independent assessment of the MoD's recruitment material by the Joseph Rowntree Trust, however, the material concerned was "very dubious". The trust said it had used misleading marketing with advertising campaigns that "glamorise warfare, omit vital information and fail to point out the risks and responsibilities associated with a forces career".
Mr Sinnott said: "On their recruitment material, it tells what an exotic lifestyle this can be, but it doesn't mention that being in the military involves killing people. These things don't feature as they should in a proper, balanced view of what it is like being in the armed forces."
What the MoD's guide says... and what it omits
* "Iraq was invaded early 2003 by a United States coalition. Twenty-nine other countries, including the UK, also provided troops... Iraq had not abandoned its nuclear and chemical weapons development program". After the first Gulf War, "Iraq did not honour the cease-fire agreement by surrendering weapons of mass destruction..."
The reality: The WMD allegation, central to the case for war, proved to be bogus. David Kay, appointed by the Bush administration to search for such weapons after the invasion, found no evidence of a serious programme or stockpiling of WMDs. The "coalition of the willing" was the rather grand title of a rag-tag group of countries which included Eritrea, El Salvador and Macedonia.
* "The invasion was also necessary to allow the opportunity to remove Saddam, an oppressive dictator, from power, and bring democracy to Iraq".
The reality: Regime change was not the reason given in the run-up to the invasion - the US and UK governments had been advised it would be against international law. Saddam was regarded as an ally of the West while he was carrying out some of the worst of his atrocities. As for democracy, elections were held in Iraq during the occupation and have led to a sectarian Shia government. Attempts by the US to persuade the government to be more inclusive towards minorities have failed.
* "Over 7,000 British troops remain in Iraq... to contribute to reconstruction, training Iraqi security forces... They continue to fight against a strong militant Iraqi insurgency."
The reality: The number of British troops in Iraq is now under 5,000. They withdrew from their last base inside Basra city in September and are now confined to the airport where they do not take part in direct combat operations.
* "The cost of UK military operations in Iraq for 2005/06 was £958m."
The reality: The cost of military operations in Iraq has risen by 72 per cent in the past 12 months and the estimated cost for this year is £1.648bn. The House of Commons defence committee said it was "surprised" by the amount of money needed considering the slowing down of the tempo of operations.
* "Over 312,000 Iraqi security forces have been trained and equipped (Police, Army and Navy)."
The reality: The Iraqi security forces have been accused, among others by the American military, of running death squads targeting Sunnis. In Basra, the police became heavily infiltrated by Shia militias and British troops had to carry out several operations against them. On one occasion British troops had to smash their way into a police station to rescue two UK special forces soldiers who had been seized by the police.
* "A total of 132 UK military personnel have been killed in Iraq."
The reality: The figure is 175 since the invasion of 2003. A British airman died in a rocket attack at the airport two weeks ago despite British troops not going into Basra city on operations. Conservative estimates of the number of Iraqi civilians killed since the beginning of the invasion stand at around 85,000.
* "From hospitals to schools to wastewater treatment plants, the presence of coalition troops is aiding the reconstruction of post-Saddam Iraq."
The reality: Five years after "liberation", Baghdad still only has a few hours of intermittent power a day. Children are kidnapped from schools for ransom and families of patients undergoing surgery at hospitals are advised to buy and bring in blood from sellers who congregate outside.

Show All"At least the British teachers are showing some responsibilty, I doubt if the American " teachers " are."
American teachers are fired if they deviate from the official white house propaganda. American teachers are fired if they do not choose neo-con-friendly media for use in class (Time for Kids vs. Discovery Kids). Parents or students who express any deviation of opinion from official GOP dicta are threatened with expulsion. At least this is the case in southern CA, eastern Ventura County.
Wake up, public schools in Amerika are engaged openly in propaganda and it's never questioned. Beware world, generations of rich entitled 'Merkaans with guns and WMD's are coming for you, believing that they are your savior and messiah. What will you do?
RE: Do you think the American students will learn anything about the crimes of Abu Gharib? Ghost prisoners? Torture houses? Disappearance of 'unnamed' prisoners? Mass graves pupping up all over Iraq with fresh kills?
I am sure that the students of northern portions of North Dakota and Minnesota will come visit the Human Rights Museum in Winnipeg when it opens - they visit the children's museum, the planitarium and the science museum and see plays here.
Hang on a minute, I thought it was the VICTOR that re-writes history?!!!
Great that they are doing so, but this is not much difference than the whole bloody history of the British Empire. If kids in UK were to be thought the real story, they would learn about the most shameful crime against humanity committed by the British soldiers throughout history.
I am glad they are taking a step to fight this miss-information, but I wonder what others members of the "coalition of the willing" countries are teaching their kids?
* That close to a million Iraqis have died since the invasion, plus more than half a million who died between 1991 and 2003?
* That one of the richest Arab countries can not afford giving clean water to it's citizens?
* That over 4 million Iraqis have left their home either by force or by fear?
Do you think the American students will learn anything about the crimes of Abu Gharib? Ghost prisoners? Torture houses? Disappearance of 'unnamed' prisoners? Mass graves pupping up all over Iraq with fresh kills? Iraqi women are forced to a life much harsher than the ones in Iran and in some places similar to those during the Taliban rule in Afghanistan? Do they learn anything about 100s of thousands of victims of DU in Iraq since the country was first bombed in 1991?
I really hope they manage to stop this propaganda, it is a good step toward spreading truth and maybe have a small chance of stopping such madness being repeated in outer places (read Iran, Syria etc.).

RE: - It was very fortunate then, that I had an Irish mum, who was able to fill in the missing bits of history, which they neglected to tell us - the Black and Tans, the potato famine, the burning of Irish homes.
AndyUK - what is it about the Irish and the Ukrainian and their potato famines! History is repetive - or so we should tell the English and the Russians:
Monday, November 26, 2007
Ms. Peggy Nash (Parkdale—High Park, NDP): Mr. Speaker, it has been 75 years since the terrible Ukrainian genocide called the Holodomor.
As many as one out of four Ukrainians, including millions of children, perished in the period from 1932 to 1933. Ukrainians died of starvation and disease while the Soviet Union ignored their plight and exported grain and other resources abroad. This terrible crime is largely ignored by the world community.
Now, after 75 years, it is long overdue that we pay our respects to the over one million Canadians of Ukrainian heritage, some of whom are survivors and many of whom lost family during the Holodomor.
We need to ensure that Canadians, especially Canadian students, learn about the Holodomor so that we can pledge to learn from the past and to build a better future.
I am proud to represent the riding of Parkdale—High Park with a large Ukrainian community. I want to thank them for educating me about this terrible event in our human history 75 years ago. I stand with them in recognizing the Holodomor and encourage all members to join one of Canada's largest communities as the Ukrainian Canadian Congress launches a year of commemorative events.

My mother is Irish and Welsh, my dad is French Canadian. One was taught that Louis Riel was a hero and the Founding Father of Manitoba and the other was taught that Louis Riel was a crazy man who had to be stopped. Actually, my mom thinks that a relative of hers was promised farm land out west for fighting against Riel during one of the two Riel rebellions.
Lizard - even the American history as it is covered here hides some of the dirtier truths. This is what we are taught of the American Revolution:
The American colonies also saw the Quebec Act as a betrayal. The legislation of a French colony and its extension to the Ohio Valley was called one of the "Intolerable Acts" and a wave of expansionism and anti-Catholic sentiment swept through the colonies.
Ministers preached to their congregations of Protestant triumph and the defeat of Satan. The expanded borders of Quebec also curtailed American expansion. More than a million New England colonists were restricted by 65,000 French Catholics.
Newspapers and budding statesmen railed. In The New York Journal: "The finger of God points out a mighty Empire to our sons; the Savages of the wilderness were never expelled to make room in this, the best part of the continent, for idolators and slaves."
Benjamin Franklin said: "It appears to me the greatest stake that was ever played for, no less than whether Americans, and their endless generations shall enjoy the common rights of mankind, or be worse than Eastern slaves; the trial must now come to issue as 'open war' is declared by the Boston Port Act...and above all the Quebec Bill."
http://history.cbc.ca/history/?MIval=EpContent.html&series_id=1&episode_id=4&chapter_id=13&page_id=5&l...
(this is from the end of Episode 4 "Battle for a Continent" - most of the stuff on the American Revolution is in Episode 5 "A Question of Loyalties")
Not much on "honest Abe" in Canadian history, though.
Thank you all for letting me know there are a few still awake.
Whoa! Just a second. The only extraordinary thing here is the protest by the teachers. The history I was taught in school is not the real one. Can you even imagine teaching that Lincoln violated his oath of office? But he did, by not respecting the constituiton, not to mention the agreement with the south which was illegaly attacked. Does the assasination of such a person not qualify as understandable? History taught in schools is incomplete and misleading. This is true all over the world. It is even true outside schools. I call it a tiny bit of progress that this old age custom of rewriting history is being challenged.
I went to a Roman Catholic school in the UK in the sixties and seventies, and I was never told anything about the atrocities committed by the UK in Ireland, which ultimately led to the "troubles". It was very fortunate then, that I had an Irish mum, who was able to fill in the missing bits of history, which they neglected to tell us - the Black and Tans, the potato famine, the burning of Irish homes. The IRA were made out to be something evil, and indeed their acts were horrific, but there was a reason behind them. The UK invaded Ireland and tried to rule it, showing little respect to the Irish.
The same situation is starting to happen in Iraq, where the insurgency will be blamed on people who do not respect life, and we will only be told of the good deeds of the coalition members.
Arkitekton: I feel just the same way as you - very weary, fed up trying to explain to people about the Iraq situation, whilst inwardly aware that they see me as a bore. I no longer trust what any of my politicians say, I do not trust the media, and it is very rare that I get the chance to have an intelligent conversation with anyone about current affairs or politics - most people just don't care.
At times I wonder if the reason why I think differently to other people, is that I don't eat Maccy D's or Burgerking or KFC, but I could probably be put on some kind of subversive list for thinking like that.
Arkitekton, you are so right to refer to the situation as "the endless crap"
From the MoD's version of reality:
* "Iraq was invaded early 2003 by a United States coalition. Twenty-nine other countries, including the UK, also provided troops… Iraq had not abandoned its nuclear and chemical weapons development program". After the first Gulf War, "Iraq did not honour the cease-fire agreement by surrendering weapons of mass destruction…"
Oh god, these sacks of shit never stop do they?
I think this is the first time I've sworn on CD. I just get worn out by the endless crap.
I would consider being a Peacekeeper a real job. Iraq was not by any stretch of the imagination a Peacekeeping mission.
Back to the topic of WWII - I thought that British and American schools had different views concerning American involvement in WWII. I guess that British children will be getting the American version of that history too.
Aren't there any Brits here?
Why don't the soldiers get real jobs like the rest of us and quit running around killing defenseless, innocent people including women, children and their grandparents, etc. --- so that the wealthy elite war profiteers can get even richer.
RE: - In the "Teacher Notes" section, it talks about how the "invasion was necessary to allow the opportunity to remove Saddam Hussein" but it fails to mention the lack of United Nations backing for the war. The notes also use the American spelling of "program". / The spokesman added that the programme was "a set of web-based resources" whose use was "completely voluntary".
RE: - The notes also use the American spelling of "program". Don't you just love it when (war) criminals are too stupid to wear gloves?
RE: - Good Catch. Perhaps some interprising UK citizen can use it to show their education programme was made in America!
My guess is that Richard Garner et al already expected that this "lesson plan" came from the US (because it is so different than the way the war is being covered in both the UK and Canada) and was combing the article for US spellings to prove the theory. Hey, we all knew before this that Prime Ministers and Presidents all speak the same language to begin with - example, George Bush, Stephen Harper, Phony Blair, and John Howard all used the phrase "emission intensities" when talking about climate change.
Sadly, the difference between British and American spellings of words is greater than the difference between Canadian and American spellings - making such a task easier for British journalists than Canadian ones. Though our MPs are not without their resources - the rebuttal to the following was that it is common practice and, therefore, the NDP were making something out of nothing:
Canadian military wrote speech Afghan President delivered to Parliament
OTTAWA – NDP Defence Critic Dawn Black (New Westminster-Coquitlam) released documents today that show a team of Canadian military advisors prepared Afghan President Hamid Karzai's September 2006 speech before Parliament.
In situation reports from Task Force Afghanistan, it was reported that the "Team prepared initial draft of President [Karzai's] address to Parliament 22 Sep." General David Fraser reports in the documents that "key statistics, messages, themes, as well as overall structure [of the speech], were adopted by the President in his remarks".
"These documents show that Karzai's address to Parliament was an elaborately staged political stunt," said Black. "What Canadians heard was not the voice of the Afghan people, but the talking points of the Department of National Defence."

Speaking of common practice - Harper (like Mulroney before him) is suing the Liberals for tarnishing his reputation unjustly - which lead to this revelation concerning the real reason behind the Middle East wars - making money:
Friday, March 14, 2008
Ms. Libby Davies (Vancouver East, NDP): Mr. Speaker, Emanuel Montenegrino is the Prime Minister's lawyer. He is also now registered to lobby the Conservatives to approve the sale of RADARSAT technology to an American weapons maker.
Considering Mr. Montenegrino's regular contributions to the Prime Minister's Conservative campaigns, would the government not want to keep its promise of openness and accountability and tell the Prime Minister's counsel to stick to practising law and not political lobbying?
Hon. Peter Van Loan (Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform, CPC): Mr. Speaker, in our tough new accountability act we brought in sweeping provisions, including those which extend to lobbying, and further efforts to ensure transparency, more sweeping than any ever done under any previous government.
Let me assure the member that when the Minister of Industry makes the decision he is required to make on this, it will not be one that is determined by lobbyists. It is a decision that will be determined entirely by the best interests of Canada. He takes that responsibility very seriously. I think all of us in the House know that he will take it on that basis.
Ms. Libby Davies (Vancouver East, NDP): Mr. Speaker, that answer is exactly why Canadians do not trust the Conservative government.
It is very simple. Mr. Montenegrino is the Prime Minister's lawyer. He is lobbying for approval of the unethical sale of Canadian RADARSAT technology to an American weapons maker in violation of our national interests, putting Canadian sovereignty at risk.
The Conservatives promised accountability, so why is the Prime Minister's lawyer and long time friend lobbying a minister for a rotten deal that should never go through?
Hon. Peter Van Loan (Leader of the Government in the House of Commons and Minister for Democratic Reform, CPC): Mr. Speaker, this government has taken great steps to advance and assert our sovereignty on the world stage much more strongly than has happened under previous governments. We have seen that with our initiatives in the north, where we are extending Canadian sovereignty with serious commitments and investments, and we are seeing that with our action elsewhere on the world stage.
In terms of the transaction in question, the decision will be made on a simple basis: what is in Canada's best interests? That is how the minister will make that decision.

RE: - The learning institutions of the USA are next.
Next? Most Americans are not taught that the war of 1812 was fought against Canada and that Canada won! BTW, how did Ronald Reagan get voted "The Greatest American"?
RE: - History class in high school, we spent at least a month on Christopher Columbus,
Did your teacher ever get around to the fact that Columbus and his minions spread syphilis to Europe and North America. By his own account, not all of Columbus's sexual partners were willing.
RE: - funny the british were so impacted by WWII and seem not to have learned anything from it.
Yeah, they learned one thing - that they probably still owe the US money for the post WWII reconstruction. Consider the war in Iraq the US calling in its IOUs.
"Union members say they are also worried that armed forces recruitment fairs in schools glamorise the job by citing exotic countries that recruits will visit but fail to mention that they may be required to kill people."
JOIN THE ARMY AND SEE THE WORLD (from the bottom of a trench)
TRAVEL TO EXCITING AND EXOTIC LOCALS (and blow them up)
MEET INTERESTING AND CULTURALLY DIVERSE PEOPLE(and kill them)
Just to re-emphasize, truly balanced commentary would go a stage farther and point out that the two British soldiers held by Iraqi police were disguised as Iraqis, equipped as terrorists, and had been quite properly arrested and held. That they were bust out by British forces, is quite simply the best example of the lawlessness of our actions in Iraq.
Hey rewriting history is an ongoing thing.
The Rev. Wright did not say anything that was not true in his sermon but look at the firestorm MSM has made of it. Mustn't hear anything that goes against the party line.....America good, everyone else (with anything we want)bad.
Have you noticed there is no longer any steady coverage of new bombings taking place in Iraq. The war goes on, but that's yesterday's news; the surge is working.
What does that soldier think he is, some big brave hero, killing innocent people in Iraq?
Question: If the U.S. attacked Iraq based on "faulty intelligence" (hehe), then WHY don't the U.S. and their British lapdogs GET OUT now that they've realized their "mistake" due to "faulty intelligence" ??
I served in the British Army for 25 years so I know what I'm talking about. The Arabs are regarded as the lowest form of humanity, to call somebody an Arab is the final insult. In Aden we would pick up an Arab and drive around town with him in the back and slap him on the shoulder laughing and joking as though he was one of our best pals, he was always found dead the day after we released him.
I guarantee most of the bombing in Iraq is done by our involvement, pick a religious nutcase, give him a bomb and show how to plant it in a sewer pipe or building and there goes another military patrol attacked by insurgents. Good for the propoganda machines in the USA and UK, keeps the excuse for being there valid.
In a few years time Hollywood will glorify this crime as a fight for democracy, no doubt John Wayne or his lookalike will be the hero protecting our freedoms in a Walt Disney $300 million grand feature. War will be paraded as a " fight to preserve our hard fought freedoms " and the bullshit will be swallowed whole.
The sheeple will sit there enthralled as they gorge themselves on Popcorn, tears rolling down there cheeks as the last post is played over some Mexican immigrants body.
At least the British teachers are showing some responsibilty, I doubt if the American " teachers " are.
Steve Sinnott: "...I know they've [the military] done valuable work in establishing peace in some countries..."
So the brave, stalwart Steve Sinott, in fighting against the M1984oD's lesson plan, wasn't really adverse to ALL propaganda, just CERTAIN propaganda.
If the General Secretary of NUT is gullible enough to believe in lies and superstition what hope is there for the rest of the NUTeachers, and especially the students who are spoon-fed that kind of pablum?
What `Allready Compromised' Steve needs to do is face up to the gruesome truth regarding the compleate history of the British military's so-called "valuable work in establishing peace in some countries"
RE: shikejian March 14th, 2008 6:20 pm
Rabelais would be proud of you my friend, although I believe most youth today have no idea what, or who, the hell I'm even talking about ;-)
The last educated, somewhat literate class I am aware of was somewhere in the mid-1960's...it's all downhill from there...dumbed WAY down.
Just the title and opening paragraph of the article immediately reminded me of something very peculiar, or it was and always will be to me anyway, from the British Parliament or Cabinet of schmuck Blair (twinkle-toes man who likes to have encounters with a mysterious being of light, or I should say he and his wife, and purportedly anyway); well, about their political "discussion" about whether or not to embark in the war on Iraq.
This was late at night or early morning, whichever way you prefer to think of it, and in a surely BBC broadcast aired over CBC. I often listen to radio until wee hours of the morning, and it's the hours during which CBC provides airings of BBC, and the Australian (ABC) and Africa BC, whatever the abbreviation or acronym for it is, which I like to sometimes listen to.
Well, so it was sometime in 2003 and before the launch of the war, for the cabinet was not yet firm on whether or not to embark in the war; although it struck me much more like show stuff, to try to get the British population to believe that the war decision hadn't been finalised yet.
They talked back-and-forth, there were plenty of yes-men in the "chorus" or "choir", whatever the right reference is, and when they finally concluded that they were embarking Britain into the war, they all sounded off; literally sounding like a bunch of PIGS, HOGS, grunting, and I mean like "happy" hogs.
WAR PIGS, PIGS OF WAR!
It was so damn SICKENING that I seriously wonder if there were, or not, actual [demons] involved; and not speaking of my end of the air-waves.
Hey guys, just wait until you see OUR history books about the Iraq War - which is not a war.
funny the british were so impacted by WWII and seem not to have learned anything from it.
peak oil and peak civilization. how many zillion of years of evolution, you've seen it -- us, wow! done!!
don't worry about aliens from space though, surely they've gone no further than our self-destructive corrupt, lying, predatory natures.

This is a very interesting topic. I remember reading that the US Corps of Engineers which is a greedy racist fraudulent organization, run by the military, was bragging about how they built a water treatment plant in Irag and provided drinking water for tens of thousands. I sent them an email asking, "gee I wonder what millions of people in Iraq were drinking for tens of thousands of years before we got there? Naturally, the greedy racist frauulent Nazis did not respond to my question. What can you say?

The rest is simply Bull$hit for the Mass Audience who cannot distinguish the difference between the important and the trivial.

The History of the Colonization if Iraq
as uncovered by
Minna vander Pfaltz
from the Notebooks of Geoffrey Crayon, late friend of Washington Irving
Most people grow old within a small circle of ideas, which they have not discovered for themselves.
Marquis de Vauvenargues
It has long been a very serious and anxious question as to the original discovery of the land called Iraq. This is a brief history of that discovery that will completely vanquish such a preposterous question.
The inhabitants of Lud, by way of their astonishing advances in science and by profound insight into that Ludnikian philosophy the mere flickerings of which dazzled the blind and addled the shallow brains of good people, had arrived at such a command of their energies--such an enviable state of perfectibility!--as to control the elements and navigate the boundless regions of cyberhypedspace. The prodigiousness of sailing in the air and cruising among the stars is a tad more astonishing and incomprehensible to mass man than was the ancient mystery of navigating floating castles through the world of water to the savage natives. The disparity between the former, and the aerial vehicles of the philosophers from Lud, might not be greater than that between the bark canoes of savages and the mighty ships of their discoverers.
Thus it was that a raving crew of these soaring philosophers, in the course of an ethereal voyage of discovery, chanced to alight upon an outlandish land somewhere near its purported cradle of civilization; that is, the region along the banks of the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, known today as Iraq.
The aetherial visitants, possessed of vastly superior knowledge in the art of extermination riding on apparatus belliÂ-defended with impenetrable carapaces--were armed with concentrated sunbeams and provided with vast engines to hurl enormous intercontinental BM's. The people from Lud were as superior to the Iraqis in knowledge--and consequently in power--as the Europeans were to the Indians when they first discovered them. The poor red savages, before they had any knowledge of the white men, armed in all the terrors of glittering steel and tremendous gunpowder, were as perfectly convinced that they themselves were the most wisest, the most virtuous, the most powerful and the most perfect of created beings as are, at this present moment, the lordly inhabitants, the volatile populace and the self-satisfied citizens of this the world's most enlightened republic.
The aetherial voyagers, then, finding this cradle of civilization to be nothing but a howling wilderness inhabited by poorly savages and wild beasts, took formal possession of it, in the name of his Most Gracious and Philosophic Excellency, Ned im Lud. Finding, however, that their numbers were incompetent to hold it in complete subjection on account of the ferocious barbarity of its inhabitants, they took the worthy shah, the potentate, the caliph, the sheikh, I say the very nabob himself and returned to The Land of Lud, carrying him to court as a spectacle, as was done to the Indian chiefs at the courts of Europe. Making such obeisance as the etiquette of the Lud court required, they addressed the puissant Ned im Lud, in, as near as can be conjectured, for the historic document has been lost, the following terms:
"Most Serene and Mighty Ned, whose dominions extend as far as the eye can
reach, who rides on Big Bertha, uses the sun as a looking glass and maintains unrivaled control over tides, madmen and sea-slugs--oh Great Ned, I say, we your liege subjects have just returned from a voyage of discovery. In the course of this, we landed and took possession of an obscure dirty little patch of land called Iraq. This uncouth monster, which we have brought into your August Presence, was once a very important chief among its fellow savages, a race of beings totally destitute of the common attributes of Ludanity and differing in every way from the inhabitants of Lud inasmuch as they carry their heads upon their shoulders instead of under their arms, have two eyes instead of one, are utterly destitute of tails and are of an unseemly complexion--a horrible burnishness instead of the pure white of Lud-lustre.
"We found these miserable savages sunk in a state of the utmost ignorance and depravity, every man shamelessly living with his own wife and rearing his own children, instead of indulging in that house of wives and garden of kids enjoined by the law of nature and as expounded by the Philosophers of Lud. They have scarcely a gleam of true thought among them. They are, in fact, utter heretics, ignoramuses and barbarians. Taking compassion, therefore, on the sad condition of these sublud wretches, we endeavored, while we remained in their land, to introduce among them to the Light of ReasonÂ-and the comforts of Lud. We treated them to banquets of Ludshine and bracers of nucleaide and bouquets of cloud of mushroom which they swallowed with incredible voracity-- particularly the females. We likewise endeavored to instill into them the precepts of Ludan philosophy. We insisted upon their renouncing the contemptible shackles of religion and common sense in place of adoring the Profound, Omnipotent, and All Perfect Energy of the Ecstatic, Immutable, Immovable Perfection of Ned im Lud. But such was the unparalleled obstinacy of these wretched anthropophagites that they persisted in cleaving to their wives, adhering to their religion and absolutely set at naught the Sublime Doctrine of Lud. Among other abominable heresies, they went so far as to blasphemously declare that this ineffable land of Lud was made of nothing more nor less than apple pie!"
At these words, the great Ned im Lud (being a very profound philosopher) fell into a terrible passion, pulling his hair and gnashing his teeth and thrashing about on the floor. Possessing equal authority over things that do and do not belong to him, as does His Holiness the Pope Hallowed be His name, he forthwith issued a formidable decretum or diktat, that is to say, a pronunciamento:
"Whereas a certain crew of Luddites have lately discovered and taken possession of a newly discovered land called Iraq; and whereas it is inhabited by none but a race of two-legged animals that carry their heads on their shoulders instead of under their arms, cannot talk the Luddite language, have two eyes instead of one, are destitute of tails and of a horrible drab fuscia instead of pearly white; therefore, and for a variety of other excellent reasons, as they are incapable of possessing any property in the land they infest, the right and title to it are confirmed to its original discoverers, the Luddites. And furthermore, the colonists who are now about to depart to the aforesaid land are authorized and commanded to use every means to convert these infidelic rogues from the darkness of their Imamic souls and make them thorough and absolute Luddites."
In consequence of this benevolent bull, Ned im Lud's philosophic benefactors returned to the land of Iraq and set to with hearty zealotryness. They seized upon fertile territories, scourged the denizens of their self-considered rightful possessions, relieved them of their unwonted wives and daughters. When the miscreants were unreasonable enough to complain, the Luddite missionaries turned upon them saying, "Miserable miscreants! Ungrateful uncouths! Have we not come thousands of miles to improve your worthless land? Have we not fed you with Ludshine? Have we not intoxicated you with nucleaides? Have we not befogged you with cloud of mushroom? Does not our Ludan erudition give you light and knowledge beyond your ken? We could have kept all this to ourselves. But no! We gave it away without asking for so much as a whimper. And now you have the gall to murmur when we claim but a pitiful return for this our beneficence?"
But the upstarts not only persisted in absolute contempt of Ludnik reasoning and disbelief in the True Philosophy, going so far as daringly to defend their property. Luddite patience was exhausted and so the men from Lud resorted to their superior powers of argument, such as hunts with massive moving knuckle-dusters, transfixings with concentrated sunbeams, demolishings of cities with Ludstone iron rations until, by main force, the men from Lud had converted the Iraqi insurgents to the True Philosophy.
And so, the Luds graciously permitted the locals to exist in the torrid desert land, there to enjoy the blessings of civilization and the charms of Luddite philosophy, in much the same manner as the reformed and enlightened savages of the New World were kindly suffered to inhabit the inhospitable scrubland of the north or the impenetrable wildernesses and wastelands of the south and west.
This clearly proves and strikingly illustrates the right of the Luddites to the possession of Iraq. All this is very true. It is only others' mutual admiration societies that makes them think otherwise.
so orwellian. big brother would be proud. keep those lil tykes in the dark about real life and you keep a passive, ignorant citizenry who will keep allowing you to pull this kind of bs.
power to the teachers for fighting that crap.
Hay, who needs Hitler (World War 2) or the old Soviet Union (Cold War) for enemys when your own allies can kill your people...
The only 'weapon' in this world that could effectively kill the USA and its war-mongoring policies, is Atomic and EMP based weaponry.
EMP would effectively shut the entire country down, if planned correctly, and stop them dead in their tracks. (though id feel sorry for average 'joe american' citizen who'd suffer for anti-bushism attacks)
I wouldnt mind taking a shot at Bush, or that Kissinger bloke, for
Crimes against humanity, policies of genocide and mass murder!

Good Catch. Perhaps some interprising UK citizen can use it to show their education programme was made in America!"
It is impossible that their educational program could have been made in America. UK students are significanty outscoring US students on standardized tests, particularly math. We spend more money per student than any other country in the world and get third world results. That's made in America for you.
(I can't wait for the teacher's union folks to start pillorying me.)
The ministry of truth speaks yet again.
At least the schools in the UK are talking about current events. In my Advanced Placement U.S. History class in high school, we spent at least a month on Christopher Columbus, but when we finally got around to World War II at the END OF THE CLASS (as if US history suddenly slammed into a brick wall in 1945!), our teacher dismissively summarized the defining event of the 20th century as "just a bunch of people fighting." (Keep in mind that this was the AP class---ostensibly the course for the thinkers.) Nothing more recent than 1945 was EVER discussed in any of my history or social studies classes. EVER. I always wondered why---I guess our public schools figured that you need at least forty years worth of propaganda in place before something qualifies as history.
AmeriKKKA raping then murdering women & children to hide the truth, no surprise.....
"Conservative estimates of the number of Iraqi civilians killed since the beginning of the invasion stand at around 85,000."
Very conservative, indeed.
What a balls-up this is!
The US, The UK, Britain, England, Wales, Scottland, Ireland, and lets not forget the military powerhouses that includes Spain, uh…let's see, there's uh, Spain, uh Italy, (I think they sent a guy or two) Austrailia… and, oh forget it.
Don't forget Poland! Musn't forget Poland.
...2003 by a United States coalition. Twenty-nine other countries...
The first point assigns the blame squarely where the Brits want it. On the US. Despite the fact that they colluded in the disinformation campaign leading up to it.
Shameful.
As for the 29 other countries, let's try to name them:
The US, The UK, Britain, England, Wales, Scottland, Ireland, and lets not forget the military powerhouses that includes Spain, uh...let's see, there's uh, Spain, uh Italy, (I think they sent a guy or two) Austrailia... and, oh forget it. The other 29 nobody remembers because they only went along with it due to overbearing pressure, not because they thought it was necessary.
Sorry revisionist historians.
The British History books should also say that what ever they learn on the internet is false propaganda.

The MoD must be worried that their ever-diminishing pool of naive and ill-educated potential recruits is about to evaporate, exposed to the harsh light of reality.
Ideally for the MoD, children are to be educated as one would grow fungus; kept in the dark and fed excrement.
The learning institutions of the USA are next. In many areas it has already started. A deep division exists among Americans. The instructors supporting bush will do everything they can to 'soften' the Iraq conflict. Some will superimpose their own Neocon fantasy world into the classroom. Others will illuminate the students correctly. It will depend on where you are, who wrote your textbook, and who your instructor is as to what definition of history you receive. The education provided will be backlashed by the parents regardless of the accuracy of the lesson. Teachers will hear either "How dare you try to discredit a great man like bush!" or "Where are you getting your information? The Iraq war was a lie!" from the parents. If I was a history instructor, I'd start looking for another job.
well, they DID say it was "fair and balanced"
Usually the winners wait to rewrite history until they've won a war.
Cygnus, the NUT (National Union of Teachers) are the good folks who won't take the US spoon-fed propaganda and insert it into young, trusting minds.
Now then.... They say, "On one occasion British troops had to smash their way into a police station to rescue two UK special forces soldiers who had been seized by the police."
These two "UK special forces solders" were arrested because they had dressed up as insurgents and were driving around in a beat up car shooting civilians. They were properly apprehended and arrested by Iraqi gov't forces, and it was discovered they were British troops in these disguises.
They were held for trial for murder, and for an explanation from the UK. The explanation was to ignore the significance of these actions, and bust them out of jail, murdering more Iraqi "allies" in the process.
If in doubt, Google it, et al.

NUT? Balls?
More like Bullcr*p!
George Orwell looks on from the afterlife, sadly shaking his head and quietly repeating "I tried to tell them... I tried..."
This is an absolute disgrace. It is positively pathetic. As if anyone would be fooled by this.
The notes also use the American spelling of "program".
Don't you just love it when (war) criminals are too stupid to wear gloves?
I can't wait to see what the U.S. history books have to say. From what I remember we haven't ever done a thing wrong (except for slavery). I have a feeling the U.S. version will look much like the filth above.
"The "reconstruction" of Iraq, noting that 5,000 schools and 20 hospitals have been rebuilt..."
I.E. some still standing buildings have been repainted. Books, bandages and batteries not included. No teachers, no students, no doctors, no nurses, no plumbing, no water, no power but freshly painted propaganda signs.
Typical New Labour, fudge the facts, sex up the evidence, and expect to get away with it. Gordon Brown is proving to be no better than Mr. B-liar (sorry, Blair).
Digusting. I hope the British throw this MoD take on the war in the garbage.
