US Veterans Urge Soldiers to Speak Out Against Iraq War
WASHINGTON - US veterans and active-duty soldiers on Thursday kicked off an event in Washington to protest the war in Iraq, urging other members of the military to join them in speaking out against the conflict.
"There's an upswell of disgust and disapproval for the Iraq war in the military," intelligence sergeant Selena Coppa told AFP at the launch of the four-day "Winter Soldier" event.
"The difficulty is letting them realize they are legally entitled to speak out about it, other than to service members," added Coppa, who is still on active duty in the US army.
Camilo Mejia, the first conscientious objector to the Iraq war, went a step further.
"I want our servicemen and women to know that standing up to an immoral occupation is not only their right but also their duty to their country and humanity," he told reporters.
"My first mission in Iraq was to run a prisoner of war camp where we used sensory and sleep deprivation techniques prior to interrogation," he recounted at the opening news conference, which was heavy with foreign correspondents but light on US media.
Mejia was court martialled for refusing to redeploy to his unit after two weeks' leave, and spent nine months in a military jail.
Now the chairman of the board of Iraq Veterans Against the War (IVAW), which has organized the four-day gathering, Mejia spoke of a groundswell of resistance within the US military to the war in Iraq, which will enter its sixth year later this month.
"Servicemen and women are refusing en masse to participate in this war. I have seen a rapid and inevitable growth of dissent within our ranks," he said.
At the "Winter Soldier" event in Washington, some 200 soldiers like Coppa and Mejia will give eye-witness testimonies about what they lived through during their deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, and afterwards.
The event is organized by IVAW, a grouping of around 800 military veterans and active soldiers opposed to the occupation of Iraq.
Vietnam veterans held a "Winter Soldier" event in 1971 at which more than 100 servicemen and 16 civilians described atrocities committed against innocent civilians in South Vietnam.
The name "Winter Soldier" is derived from the "summer soldier" described by American Revolutionary War writer Thomas Paine in "The Crisis:"
"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman," Paine wrote in the 18th century work.

This disgusting war is wrecking the lives of all who touch it (except the politicians who feed on it).
If you are unsure what I mean, watch my short YouTube video. I made it to shame my Senator, Saxby Chambliss.

I copied and forwarded this video to my local U.S. Rep, John Campbell, 48th Cong. Dist,Orange County, CA, with a thank you for protecting me from HIS enemies.
Thanks for making this very graphic evidence of the U.S. war crimes.

i just called the local and washington offices of senator claire mccaskill of missouri, my state. I was greeted by a twenty nine year old and a twenty one year old. i explained to them that i was going to raise my voice but not to take it personally it was for emphasis. i raised my voice and spoke harshly about the iraq war and the resulting patriot act, the building of 800 prisons capable of holding 20,000 people each, the giving to george bush the right to declare anyone a terrorist even a peace marcher, the spending of three trillion dollars on an undeclared and illegal war, the killing of one million iraqi's, the death and maiming of nearly forty thousand american soldiers, etc... What I received in response was ego driven defensiveness. They are NOT listening. The fight needs to be taken to them. As a veteran i thank those who are in washington fighting to take back this country from the republican fascists. my deepest thanks.
Thank you so much to all who are testifying to what they saw and were asked to do.
I called Senator Boxer and was thanked politely for calling, Senator Feinstein who seeemed to know about the hearing and Rep. Eshoo office and was thanked for calling. I also e-mailed Senator Obama's campaign and told them of the hearing. I wonder if anyone from any of these places is responding to the hearing in any way?
The United States military is better than this! It is time to tell Washington so!
Well, our RIVERMAN 101 has spammed his identical stupid post on several threads here. I do wonder if Riverman is Dougwagner in disguise?
The riverman has been damned by many, but he continues to flow …
Yep, but "damns" have overflow outlets.
"Our military is better than this". I sure do hope so, but I understand our Air force officer corps, has been taken over by born again Christians. ____ Scary.
D n G -- Perhaps calling them republican fascists isn't strong enough, I strongly suspect that later medical evidence will support my hypothesis, that most arePSYCHOPATHIC republican fascists
I apologize (only in part) for those who actually are not real PSYCHOPATHIC criminals, but only take on those behaviors for personal profit and insidiously wicked pleasures of power manipulation and control of American for their nefariously greedy ILLEGAL and IMMORAL enterprises.
These men are actually in some ways more evil, because they choose to act like PSYCHOPATHs, and the medical EXCUSE of intrinsic brain lesions is absent.
Although I revere all life, and abhor the death penalty, I believe strongly that there are literally millions of sick twisted psychopaths out on the streets, preying upon AMerica - and many of them were naturally attracted into the Republican criminal cartel.
Please prove me wrong, I would much rather be a fool on this, then be correct - but the evidence is systematically evident and overwhelmingly true.
God help us, Our Gov't is clinically insane

Soldiers who speak out against the war while still in the military are sure to get a lot of flak - first of all from their own consciences. The military depends on people standing by their brothers and sisters during thick and thin. Soldiers have that kind of loyalty to each other, even when the mission is based on lies and horrifying.
It is easy to blog. We have to realize what a difficult step it is for these soldiers to speak out about this criminal war, psychologically, socially and possibly legally. If you know a soldier who will do that, please give him or her all the material, emotional and legal support you can.
Winter Soldier hearings are being broadcast live on KPFA PACIFICA FM RADIO all day 3/14, 15, & 16. Also on line streaming at kpfa.org,
Someone once said that war is hell. I always thought that he was speaking of the violence, noise, and death that ensue war. But now with the winter soldiers taking a stand for peace I plainly see that war hurts those that carry out the killings just as much as it hurts those that were injured and/or killed. To illustrate my point go to "youtube.com/watch?v=QT44mis7qDg" to view the video about a soldier who had to tell the truth about the war, those that started the war and those that fought the war. He tell what he personally did and what he saw others do in the name of "we the people of the united states"..
You are insane Riverman. You're not even humerous today.
It is well past time for a replay of the "Sir, No Sir!" movement. In case some readers don't know what it was, it was a dissident movement amongst Vietnam era conscripts that at its' height seriously threatened the ability of the higher ranks to carry out orders.
I watched this all day on 9415 Free Speech TV [DISH], and I'm recording it right now. It is not easy or fun to watch, but even for one who has activly spoke out against this war from the start, I am still learning a lot.
I am from Maine. We have only two congressional representatives, Tom Allen who represents my district and was one of the few who was initally against the war, and Mike Michaud who represents the other distract and had voted for the war. Shortly after the war started we met with Allen and begged him to support a time table for withdrawal and he flatly refused. We have continued to demonstrate, meet with him or attempt to meet with him, call and email him, begging him to quit funding the war, but he has always come back with the "We must support the troops" and *don't forget I voted against it*.
And now here we are all these years later with thousands of our brave troops dead and many thousands more wounded in body, mind, and spirit, and only God knows how many thousands of Iraqis dead and injured, homeless and broken in spirit. Add to that the fact our VA system is so overloaded that they are unable to care for our returning veterans (to say nothing of the fact that we are spending so much on this senseless slaughter that we are now seeing cutbacks on our state programs for the needy). Now tell me, what kind of crap is this WE MUST SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! that Representative Allen speaks of?
BTW, Representative Michaud who originally voted for the war has voted to end funding several times now. What a wimp eh? :=)
Ah! Amy Goodman's speaking now -- gotta go!
Thanks to all those who presented this program.
Where is the American Doughboy of the World War II era. Can we ever recapture that high degree of respect and admiration from other countries again? Our only chance is to elect Barack Obama.
It would be very iteresting to take a poll of all those in the current administration and all the politicos surrounding them to determine how many of their offsprings are serving in the Military to introduce democracy in Iraq.
(A religious war never to be won). Perhaps, if the draft had been reinstituted at the beginning, and the playing field leveled to include some of the aforementioned offspring, the war would have been over before it began. Not so. the Commander and Chief of the Armed Forces now has a disclaimer: A voluntary Military, as in, "our boys volunteered to bring peace and democracy to Iraq" Horse Shit. The war is being fought by persons lookin forward to the G.I. bill for college, those whom the Judicial System has placed there rather than jail and those who could not find employment in the civilian arena. the maimed Veterans are having a difficult time getting proper Medical Care and a Widow of the war recieves a pittance of $600.00 monthly for the loss of a loved one and probably her home and automobile. Justification? Not hardly.
Where are all the soldiers who said no to the Vietnam War? Like the Ft. Hood Three? There were other hi-profile cases I cannot recall.
Or my own cousin who first volunteered out of patriotism, was sent home with a nervous breakdown. He said he went crazy when they were throwing captured Vietnamese out of helicopters. He went AWOL hiding out in a basement when they tried to send him back to Vietnam. Everyone in the family knew where he was, including another cousin who was an MP assigned to hunt him down, but nobody turned him in. He stayed that way until there were so many "deserters" and the war was so unpopular that the Army stopped looking. He never got better and has been homeless most of his life.
Let's get these guys out of Iraq and Afghanistan ASAP before they get killed, injured or go mad. The Vietnam era soldiers and resisters need to speak up to give heart to today's so called volunteer army.
It amazes me how much money has been raised to pander to the whims of Hillary Clinton. The Florida/Michigan Redo is a deception. Voters must not participate in this "Status Quo, Establishment" ploy. Divide the Delegates equally and spend the money on the Disabled Veteran.
These Soldiers should lay down their weapons and let the Leaders, Corporate CEOs, Media, Profiteers, and Warmongers fight and Die for the Oil. Blackwater employees exercise their first amendment rights to Free Speach while the Civilian Guardsman in this Iraq fiasco cannot. Isn't this ironic.
Soldiers and Veterans, you have a Constitutional obligation to tell the Truth. By doing so, you shall be Liberated before God and Man. Be not decieved anymore. Make history. Stop this damned Nation Bleeding Fiasco in Iraq; Stand - Down on this attempt to provoke Iran. Let's not allow the servants to these immoral intrusions to live comfortably in our neighborhoods.

This disgusting war is wrecking the lives of all who touch it (except the politicians who feed on it). ..."
NAW, slightly differing about those words. Instead of "(except the politicians who feed on it)", I think more in terms of completeness; such as, f.e.:
"(except the politicians who feed on it, along with all of their damn supporters; from whom we can subtract perhaps even most troops, given they were suckered into accepting to serve in this war, and then so many became PTSD'd that they're in urgent need of rescue, being unable to rescue themselves)".
Something of that order of outlook, anyway.
For emphasis, and re-emphasis, esp. for those who haven't seen the links in a post I made here to a March 13th article by Tom Engelhardt:

There's a link for a very important article on the real purpose of the 1999 war on Kosovo, i.e., Yugoslavia, Serbia, all that this entails, imperialist West literally enough, if not entirely, as in explicitly, working to achieve the peak of the Roman Empire in this region of the world. Believe it or not; READING that article is something I consider a must. And then there are links to two wholly fitting videos of quality-making, certainly in terms of content.
As a person with cable I didn't see any coverage at all. i was aware that the winter soldiers were to meet and speak out starting this date, but not a word did I hear or see on any of the networks.
all day long the over reaching story was Obama and his minister, and a number of talking heads being outraged that the Senator didn't repudiate the man for what they considered unpatriotic statements he made from his church.
I'm afraid that until we get a media that is not partisan we will continue down a path where nothing changes, as far as the working class getting the type of information needed to be a well informed electorates.

Do you know whether your sub-link to the article about Kosovo on GlobalResearch is independent of www.worldreports.org? The letter published there would suggest that it is the case.
Maybe if Americans can hear just what these soldiers have to say, the majority of McCain's supporters will shrink as will Hillary's. But some Republicans have such a closed mind that nothing resembling the truth can penetrate their hard shells. But keep trying, soldiers, because if people hear the truth continually, they will gradually see the light.
Why do I have to read this article about Winter Soldiers in a French paper? Duh: Is it any wonder why Americans are considered dumb and nothing more than consumers and couch potatoes? Our press is disgusting and should be ashamed for abandoning their responsibility to keep Americans intelligently informed.
richard valentine; thanks for the link. I'm one of those crazy 0000old viet Nam vets.
these kids are paying $1200/soldier to GIVE testimony. love them, hate them, they are giving TRUTH..

The war in Afghanistan is no less an evil than the one in Iraq. If the disaffected of the army are able to do anything in numbers, the only effective action would be to march to Washington and forcibly remove from office those criminals that are ruining everything. Show the government that the army is not made to be abused for grandiose delusional schemes of power and oil.
Bush and Co. could partially redeem themselves for the history books if they would start sending our troops home NOW.

AAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUMMMMMMMMM
This occupation in Iraq is illegal. We have no right to determine the course of events there. Whether or not there is a civil war is not our problem except to the extent we are causing the present state of affairs.
No one has the right to invade another sovereign state; for any reason or any fear.

Words + Action, as words without action have no meaning.
So brave you are, so strong and so proud
My freedom fighter where are you now?
Amongst the land so far away
Your shoulders pulled back as you fight your way
Into the sand, no light to see
I pray that you will always be
Close to the one that protects us from fear
As I count on him to bring you near
And of the ones that protest those rights
To live our lives you fight with all might
Just so they can wake up each day
In our land that you've made this way
Their tears don't flow, their hearts torn in half
But, because of my son they still can laugh
Who has given them rights to all end
You and your comrades who'll fight at each bend
The things you'll see, the fear you'll bear
While all that love you cry many a tear
Who can you count on when you come home?
I will not leave you, you are never alone
As I cry for you each night
I wish you blessed paths so bright
If only others could see what it means
To have a son like you are to me
Not knowing just where or how safe you are now
The tears they won't stop I just don't know how
To keep you close with me ever in my thoughts
I am so fearful that I'll lose you for naught.

You are a douchebag!
it never fails!! the loony left always shows it's prozac mentality when america is involved in conflicts overseas. i think the anti war idiots were locked in closets by thier mothers when they were little kids. Why don't you assholes travel to iraq or volunteer to fight with the taliban. After you've smelled a few dead bodies or witness a live beheading or two,you will all realize that no one outside air america or the daily cos gives a shit about anything you say or do..My advice see a shrink and take your medicine.get yourself laid once or twice, and perhaps you will smell the coffee.someday they will behead all of you.
To all the loser cowards, especially the ones who have never served your country, you know who you are.there is only one way to leave iraq, that is winning the war,not the weak ass obama hillary retreat.Napalm would make the difference on the ground,i have used and seen it used with great success in vietnam plus Fewer restrictions on the deployment of b-52's and tactical fighters.
Al queda and the mindless shitheads killing harmless civilians are terrified of that flaming jelly.remember take your meds, stop the self mutilation no one cares. The u.s. state department runs the war.All tactical decisions must be approved by nameless and faceless men in dark blue suits.
the d.o.d only has tactical control.
