McCain's Very Own Farrakhan
Whatever their true private beliefs, presidential candidates in America are constantly required to provide proofs of faith, often through their connections with various religious figures. Benedictions from the pulpit bestow an aura of righteousness-except, of course, when the pastor or minister is a disreputable kook whose endorsement should be an embarrassment.
In recent weeks, both Barack Obama and John McCain have suffered exactly this kind of indignity, under very different circumstances. And their contrasting responses revealed not only aspects of their own characters, but also the enduring prejudices of the national media covering this year's campaign.
For an African-American politician seeking to attract voters of all ethnicities and persuasions, there could hardly be a less desirable supporter than Louis Farrakhan, the aging leader of the Nation of Islam. As the media never tire of reminding us, Farrakhan is a habitual bigot whose utterances have repeatedly denigrated Jews, Catholics, Caucasians and homosexuals, among others, in seeking to inflame his followers against these supposed enemies.
He detects conspiracies of "international bankers," whose machinations he blames for all the world's troubles dating back to World War II. He looks forward to a time when the Holy Land will be "cleansed by blood," as he exclaimed in a sermon not so long ago. He warns that the evil ones ruling the planet will someday be destroyed for their sins, while those who obey his admonishments (and tithe to his organization) will be saved.
Well aware of Farrakhan's record, since both of them reside in Chicago, Obama forthrightly rejected the support of the unsavory minister. Unfortunately, his own Christian pastor, Jeremiah Wright, has chosen to associate himself with the Nation of Islam, which may well create problems for Obama-but at least he has clearly separated himself from the poisonous Farrakhan philosophy.
By contrast, McCain went out of his way last week to accept the endorsement of a Christian pastor with a deeply disturbing record of bigotry and extremism. That would be John Hagee, a Texas televangelist whose career is chronicled in "God's Profits: Faith, Fraud, and the Republican Crusade for Values Voters," a new book by investigative reporter Sarah Posner. As Posner reveals, Hagee is the kind of evangelical minister who has anticipated the end of the world for decades now, even as he promises untold riches to those who tithe to his ministry. He is an ardent warmonger who, like Farrakhan, seems to imagine a Middle East cleansed by blood-except that in his fantasies, the Christians will be saved while everyone else burns. (The saved won't include members of the Catholic Church, however, an institution he despises and denounces as venomously as Farrakhan does.)
But the perspectives of these two self-proclaimed men of God resemble each other even more closely in certain ways. Hagee, too, promotes hatred of homosexuals and demands that women submit to men. And he also imagines a conspiracy by international bankers, the Bavarian Illuminati, the United Nations, the Council on Foreign Relations and other shadowy groups to deliver America into the hands of Satan. All that verbiage is merely code for traditional anti-Semitism, as Hagee surely knows because, like Farrakhan, he blames the Jewish people for their own persecution, including the Holocaust, as he explained a few years ago in his book "Jerusalem Countdown."
Yet, for reasons that seem more related to race than reason, the assorted inanities of Hagee are acceptable while those of Farrakhan are not, at least in the higher circles of the Republican Party and the national media. No matter how many times Obama rejects the Nation of Islam leader, a television anchor or debate moderator will demand that he do so again, if only to mention their names in the same breath.
Meanwhile, McCain escapes the hard questions that should be asked about his embrace of Hagee, whose ugly words and mad prophecies ought to repel him. Eight years ago, the San Antonio minister was among the political preachers, including Pat Robertson and the late Jerry Falwell, who denounced McCain and proclaimed George W. Bush to be the Lord's chosen candidate.
Back then, the Arizona Republican proved his maverick courage when he rebuked them all as "agents of intolerance." He has sought to court their favor ever since-and it is sad to see him genuflect now to the same kind of demagogue he once mocked.

Show AllAll these religious kooks whether it is Farrakhan, Hagee,Robertson ect.are the blind leading the blind. These bible thumping wacko's are what this Sinclair Lewis quote is all about: "WHEN FASCISM COMES TO AMERICA IT WILL BE CARRYING A CROSS AND BE WRAPPED IN THE FLAG'.
This is why religions should stay out of the political arena. They all have agendas, most of the time based on hate rather than love and peace.
In a past life, McCain once called Jerry Falwell and his bigoted, hate-mongering right-wing ilk "Agents of Intolerance." I guess with the Republican base in a tither about McCain's lack of Jesus credentials he has decided to become more tolerant of intolerance.
Bravo either Joe Conason or the headline writer--what a perfect match: Farrakhan and Hagee. Both are close-minded and bigoted, both have enough fanatical followers to enrich them sufficiently to make political whores pay attention, and both are willing to prostitute themselves to anyone who will reciprocate.
Actually they both are doing the American people a service by being a kind of litmus test for political whoredom ojn the part of political candidates whom they "support".
Hey, I'm a member of the Bavarian Illuminati and we have already taken over the world. Fear not; we have everything under control. Please remain in front of your television set so we can monitor your expressions.
John McCain is anti-American as is anyone that advocates illegal immigration. He will never be President

Joe Conasen should be the next press secretary (jeez I love his voice), unless Democrats lose it by flinging it at each other for the next 7 weeks instead of flinging it at McCain. The press HAS this story but won't report it other than having Hagee on the t.v. to defend himself. McCain is doing some sort of bio ad. and we'll soon see him ad nauseum as a YOUNG war guy.
I would LOVE to see Hagee float upward in the Rapture...I wonder if GOD will supply the 100 ton crane necessary to lift his huge fat ass though?
Farrakhan is no crazier than the right wingers who think they should help the battle of Armageddon happen ASAP.
I hear antiMuslim slurs all of the time in the US media, but it somehow is overlooked, while any criticism of Isreal is instantly labeled anti-semitism.
Israelis can say, "True but you aren't surrounded by 600 million Muslims who want to kill you." However, doesn't that sound as silly as Farrakhan's conspiracy theories? Most Muslims I know want to realize a political compromise to what they call social injustices with Israel. They are fighting for their lives and their rights, not a holy land and a Bible prophecy.
Then again it's hard to blame the Jews for their fear after WWII, but American Christians need to get real about their anti-Muslim prejudices. It shames us.
Most FAT TURDS do float... PTL
Until someone reaches for the "flush" mechanism.
I always thought Chris Farley would make a great John Haghee. I have a sick fascination with all these rapture right dominionists. I hope these story drags on and McCain gets hit hard.
Joe Conason is usually 100% right on, and I've read one of his books.
But I wonder why he brought up the following: "He detects conspiracies of "international bankers," whose machinations he blames for all the world's troubles dating back to World War II."
That statement is a lot more true than false. Read Naomi Klein's "The Shock Doctrine", or Greg Palast's "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy", or John Perkins' "Confessions of an Economic Hit Man".
If the election comes down to Clinton or McCain – I will vote for McCain. Though both he and Hillary are pieces of shit, at least McCain admits that he is a Republican.
The rapture can't come too soon as someone else stated here.
Then the rest of us could get on with our lives.
Wenedell Berry again:
"As I read, I thought with some dismay,
and some amusement. that the adherents of
the Koran and the Bible might be divided into
two groups: those who appoint themselves
as agents of divine anger, and those who understand
themselves as called to be agents of
divine mercy. As never before, I thought of
the unimaginable distance between God's
anger and God's love-and of the speed
with which Christians sometimes move from
God's presumed anger at other people to his
presumptive love for themselves.
To think of oneself as an agent of God's
anger is exceedingly attractive; perhaps this
is the temptation that the Lord's Prayer appeals
to God not to lead us into. There are
certain intense pleasures in anger, especially
if one's own anger can be presumed to
coincide with God's, and also in the use of
an angry self-righteousness as a standard by
which to condemn other people. This is a pleasure
necessarilv founded on the shallowest sort of
self-knowledge. There is much comedy in
(as Shakespeare for one, knew well), and
also great tragedy. It is evidently possible to in-
dulge one's own anger, justifying it as God's,
and relying on God's mercy hereafter-but
that seems to bet against great odds, and with
hell to pay here and now for a lot of people. For
those who appoint themselves agents of God's
anger, there can be only division and strife until
the end of time.
To take up, by contrast, the agency of
God's mercy seems to involve one in a labor of
self-knowledge and then knowledge of others
that is endlessly humbling. This perhaps is a
comedy of another kind: We ourselves are in
need of those things we are called upon to give
to others: compassion, forgiveness, mercy. And
unless we give them, we cannot receive them.
God's mercy is of interest to us only in the light
of our recognition of our need for it. Those who
accept the agency of God's mercy, understanding
their own need for it as the index of the
need of others, must forbear their anger and
talk together( "hold discourse"…..)until the end
of time, for God's mercy is a mystery never to
be fully known or enacted by humans.
-Wendell Berry
The rapture already happened, as predicted, back at the turn of the millenium. All those worthy were called home at that time. The rest of us are suffering in Bushco's hell.
Crumudgeon99--loved that Wendell Berry quote--thanks for posting it.
McCain's gamble might pay off no matter who the
Democratic nominee is. The hatred of Hillary and Bill Clinton amount the believing population is very strong. With respect to Barack Obama, the racism is just second nature to them and is deeply imbedded in their world view.
It was the advent of people like Hagee in the Republican party when a lot of us abandoned ship and sailed for the other side of the aisle in the 80's. They are vicious people who are so filled with hate they are destroying the political landscape with their cancer. I have hopes one of these days people will start seeing people like Hagee as they are...evil sick people! They have an agenda that isn't in keeping with most American's. We need to put the 'Gene back in the bottle' when it comes to religion. Get it out of politics once and for all. Start adhering to the Separation of Church and State completely. Most of these so called Christian's don't believe in anything the Constitution stands for. They are fascist through and through!
The title of this article is insulting. Farrakhan is a person of good will who has done a lot of good. He stands up to neocons and plutocrats, something that Democrats seem unable or unwilling to do. Hagee is unworthy to be compared to a great man like Farrakhan. Hagee is just a white trash Holy roller. What a lousy article.

"John McCain is anti-American as is anyone that advocates illegal immigration. He will never be President."
Don't bet big bucks on that. Remember Bush became President not once but twice. It could happen again.
