Israeli Violence Endangers Us, Not the Presidential Candidates
"Worst Israeli - Palestinian Clashes in a Year as Air and Ground Forces Enter Gaza," the front-page headline in the Sunday (March 2) New York Times read. That makes the conflict sound like a roughly even match. You had to read down a few paragraphs and do some math before learning that the suffering is hugely one-sided. Palestinian deaths this week outnumbered Israeli deaths by about 30 to 1, and the count of serious injuries is even more lopsided.
As usual in the U.S. mainstream media, there was no mention of the many Hamas calls for a cease-fire and immediate peace negotiations, all rejected or ignored by Israel. Are the media afraid that they'll bring down a firestorm of pro-Israeli rage on their heads if they even hint that Hamas might have the moral upper hand here?
Politicians in the U.S. certainly tread lightly when they talk about the Israel-Palestine conflict. Just a day before the "worst clashes" headline, the Times ran another front-page story: "Obama Walks a Difficult Path as He Courts Jewish Voters." According to that story, American Jews worry that Obama will not give sufficient support to Israel's hard-line policies. No matter how much Obama insists them that he will continue the "special relationship" between the U.S. and Israel -- which has always meant a green light from Washington for virtually every act of violence the Israelis perpetrate -- many Jews remain unconvinced, the article reports.
But who speaks for American Jews? Typically, it's the leaders of national Jewish organizations. They would have us believe that nothing matters more to Jews than Israel.
In fact, the leaders are increasingly out of step with the mass of Jewish voters. Look at the numbers from the American Jewish Committee's 2007 Annual Survey of Jewish Opinion. Asked to name their single most important issue when voting for president, only 6% said Israel. About one-quarter of Orthodox Jews named Israel as their main issue. That means, among the vast majority who are not Orthodox, the number who put Israel at the top of their list is so small as to be statistically insignificant.
So the Times misled us by suggesting that Obama's stand on Israel is a major problem for his campaign. If those who support the Israeli government look carefully at his position statements on the Middle East, they will find little to disagree with. Even those who don't look carefully, or remain suspicious, are unlikely to let that one issue dissuade them from voting for him.
This is not to say that U.S. Jews have anything like a progressive position on the Israel-Palestine conflict. Only 46% favor establishing a Palestinian state. That's quite a bit lower than polls find among Israeli Jews. 63% agree that "the West and the Muslim world are engaged in a clash of civilizations." 82% agree that "the goal of the Arabs is not the return of occupied territories but rather the destruction of Israel." Numbers like these suggest that most Jews would accept the Israelis' justification for their current onslaught in Gaza -- although the number of Jews who stand against Israeli violence is growing rapidly.
If Israel were the number one issue for Jewish voters, any thoughtful candidate would face a terrible dilemma. On the one hand, any criticism of Israel might really harm the candidate's chances. On the other hand, it is obvious that when Israel perpetuates the cycle of violence -- killing Palestinians rather than accepting the Hamas call for truce and negotiations -- it endangers Americans as well as Israelis. Every Palestinian civilian that Israel kills is another recruiting poster for those who would like to do harm not only to Israel but to the U.S. An American president should feel obligated to do whatever it takes to stop that.
Any thoughtful candidate knows that Israel refuses to negotiate with Hamas because most Israelis, like most U.S. Jews, believe Hamas is dead set on destroying Israel. So whatever Hamas leaders say, Israel discounts it as a devious trick. But this Israeli belief about Hamas is a leap of faith. There is no compelling evidence that requires a rational person to accept it.
On the contrary, a rational person would say, "Let's look at history." Twenty years ago, Israel insisted that the Palestine Liberation Organization, headed by the Fatah party, was determined to destroy Israel. All the assurances to the contrary given by its leader, Yassir Arafat, were rejected as cunning lies. Israel even made it illegal for any Israeli to talk to any representative of the PLO.
Then the Israeli government secretly broke its own law, negotiating an agreement with the PLO in Oslo that was supposed to lead to a two-state solution. The negotiations are still very rocky, at best. But Israeli leaders now seem to accept Fatah's good faith pursuit of a two-state solution, which means accepting Israel's permanent existence. In negotiations with Fatah, the legal question of acknowledging Israel's right to existence is simply ignored.
An American president who cared above all for national security, in Israel as well as the U.S., would insist that the Israelis treat Hamas the same way they treated Fatah and the PLO: Stop fighting, start talking, and accept de facto recognition as sufficient.
Yes, that position might be politically damaging for a presidential candidate -- if Jews voted on the basis of the candidate's approach to Israel. Fortunately for all the candidates, Israel is not the issue uppermost in Jews' minds when they go to vote. So the dilemma need not cause the candidates to lose too much sleep. Once a candidate becomes president, though, he or she should lose plenty of sleep worrying that bellicose Israeli leaders, deaf to Hamas appeals for negotiation, will endanger the security of Americans and Israelis alike.

Show AllAs long as some of the Jews living in Israel think they're entitled to the land by some deity, all seems to be fair in love and war. Anywhere else in the world the treatment of a group, like the Palestinians in the Middle East, would be considered racist at least.
And in a truly civilized world, the state of Israel would be shunned by both the United States and Europe, in stead of receiving preferential treatment. As this isn't happening, it's business as usual.
Nice to know that American Jewish attitudes toward Israel are becoming less monolithic, but this doesn't mean much until there are institutions within the American Jewish community that challenge AIPAC, FLAME, etc. etc. etc. in power and numbers.
Israel was founded independant of the diety. The masterminds were secular and often atheist ( I know, I'm embarrased). The purpose of Israel was to establish a European foothold in the Middle East. The Zionists got the land in exchange. The Zionists wanted to build a Jewish empire because Jews, with their historical importance, were seen as worthy of Empire as the Europeans. The religious part, and the holocaust part, were ways to manipulate jews to follow them. The Biblical claim is a convenient addendum.
Americans are in danger, not because of Israel, but because they are spending to much on Empire maintenance with diminishing returns. Got it? DIMINISHING RETURNS. It didn't use to be this way. Because it is no longer this way, the US will be heading DOWN.
On the other hand, if the US can get its plundering and pillaging in order (McCain) happy times would be here again. But if not, the US has too much of its economy in unproductive military, will not adjust in time and become poor. I do believe poverty is inevitable. With poverty comes humility, with humility comes integration with the world, and with integration the US will begin to be happy again. Many poor are actually happier than Americans, who seem to have to spend a lot of money to be happy but end up satiated instead of happy.
If we had created the Jewish homeland in Texas after WWII instead of Palestine they would be taking over New Mexico and other surrounding states. Probably no one would lift a finger to stop them. And as they would keep killing the displaced Texans everyone would look the other way and say they have a right for revenge.
What is it called when one side uses tanks and attack helicopters and war planes and war ships against an "enemy" that does not have tanks, attack helicopters and war planes and war ships?
Makes water torture (with or without board) seem like Sunday at the park...
It seems to me that they already had a homeland in New York City, and I'm damned glad they're here.
If I wasn't so caught up in the importance of my being Human in this infinite universe, I would think it was all vanity.
The dilemma for candidates isn't pleasing Jewish voters, but rather pleasing the media and the Jewish/Israeli lobby. Neither of these powerful blocs would allow someone to run who didn't slavishly support Israel. Thats why Kucinich and Paul were not considered serious candidates. As voters we would say things like "I like Kucinich, but support..." This is where our obedience to the media and it's minions costs us. Israel has more control over our government then we do, and they do it with our money. They are expressing suspicions about Obama. Although he has done the mandatory kiss up, he apparently didn't do it convincingly enough. It's hard to outdo Hillary on this issue. She voted for Kyl-Lieberman just to show them the lengths she will go to damage her own country for their suicidal cause.
Israel was created for the European (Ashkenazi) Jewry, not the Sephardim(who are discriminated against in Israel) native to Mediterranean lands.
European guilt, Zionist manipulation - who cares!
It's all about stealing the land and water of the area referred to in ancient times as greater Syria (Syria, Jordan,Palestine, Lebanon) and pretending its about religion.
Real believing Jews do not really condone the ungodly Zionist policies cloaked as ancient 'rights'.
Chernus misinterprets the results of the poll. The real reason Israel is not a critical issue for US Jews in the 2008 election is that they know that they will own whichever candidates wins the White House.
The poll shows only half US Jews favor a 2 state solution, but does not address a combined state solution, although it is reasonable to presume that a large fraction of those favoring a 1 state solution are in favor of the 2 state solution. A clear majority of US Jews believe that Israel gets to set the borders pretty much unilaterally.
Modern Israel was created as the second Jewish state in the 20th century. The first was created in the early 1930s as an autonomous state within the nation of the origin of the dominant majority of modern Jews. They did not want it badly enough to make it work, and its failure may have contributed significantly to the Jewish half of the Holocaust.
To not work with a democratically elected political party like Hamas because of planks in their party platform is, I believe, only the surface of a much deeper and sinister desire on the part of interests within the US, EU, and Israeli governments to deny Palestinians statehood and equal rights in an Israel/Palestine. Call me a cynic. But I don't believe opposition to Hamas in the State Department is genuinely tied to the 'terrorist threat' of a democratically elected political party as much as it is to the maintenance of a geopolitical prison system. If the government of Israel was really against Hamas because they are against 'terrorism' why then did the government of Israel grant amnesty to Al Aqsa fighters, (designated by Israel, the United States, and the EU as a terrorist group)?
"Mr. Abbas has been ruling by decree since the Hamas takeover of Gaza. The Hamas-dominated Palestinian parliament has been paralyzed for months, with about half the Hamas legislators detained in Israeli jails. Palestinian officials in the West Bank said over the weekend that they had received a new list of 110 fugitives to be offered amnesty by Israel. A month ago, Israel and the Palestinians agreed on the names of 178 militants to be taken off Israel's wanted list, all members of the Fatah-affiliated Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades militia." (1)

Over there, its the question of who threw the first punch which will never be settled and thus should be overlooked.
This is the other problem, the problem of manipulated perception....
Palestinian = Terrorist- throws rocks, makes weapons from what little scraps can be found including petroleum based (fertilizer and diesel fuel) etc.
Israel = Military- uses modern U.S.(and others) fighter jets rigged with bombs, cluster bombs, advanced rockets, machine guns...tanks, bulldozers etc.
Maybe all the toys should be taken away from Israel OR the Palistiians should be given the same toys.
Israel needs to stop the land grabbing and oppression and should strive to help their neighbors to a better life.
As far as the idea that Jews will be unbiased in their vote for a president based on whats good for Israel, thats BS. Jews got where they are today(power) by sticking together as a race and they will never let that go. They will not be slaves again and the only way to avoid that is to be in power... "the chosen ones"
The media should stop catering to both sides and the US should stop sending so much money to such a small welfare state.
Shame that Jews end up wanting to live in a ghetto surrounded by high concrete walls. Only hope they get over this ghastly death-wish; & learn not to covet their neighbours lands.
One could only hope they finish the walls and stay behind them.
"Asked to name their single most important issue when voting for president, only 6% said Israel."
Unfortunately, that's the 6 percent who are paying the campaign bills.
"82% agree that "the goal of the Arabs is not the return of occupied territories but rather the destruction of Israel"
and the goal of 82% of Israelis is not the return of the occupied territories, but the destruction of the Palistinain state.

How much of that Israel Pac is Obama getting?
How about Hillary?
Are the media afraid that they'll bring down a firestorm of pro-Israeli rage on their heads if they even hint that Hamas might have the moral upper hand here?
Yes. Israelis are very touchy about this situation in which they have become the very embodiment of the Oppressors they once suffered. They have now donned the dark cloak of once victim who grows up to become The Abuser. 'Rounding them up in Ghettos to exterminate them.' Sounds too horrifyingly familiar.
Jews, this is a bad dream, a living nightmare -one that kills real innocents. Stop with the rounding up in Ghettos where you murder the people locked up inside. You have been there. You know this. You can stop this.
People of Palestine, (That includes the Jews too : ( God/ Goddess keep you in safety til the light of what is right can be the Law of the Land. Somehow there has to be room for everyone. Palestinians and Israelis. Hey we do it in California. Los Angeles County is supposedly the size of Israel. It is such a small piece of land.
I just have to hope there is a way.

Any number of members of Congress who are unfailingly astute when it comes to most other foreign policy issues* are believers in the AIPAC/Zionist line when it comes to "poor little Israel."
Who will educate the next president?
*Many also think that AFRICOM is a regular military command instead of the US and kazillions of mercenaries militarizing Africa (much of it through State Dept "help" and Defense "humanitarian assistance") in order to assure US access to its oil and other natural resources. Google: Africom mercenaries; Africom militarization; Africom opposition. Who will educate the next president on this one?
This weekend I could hardly find a single person that had so much as even heard about what was going on in Gaza. It's been virtually a media blackout on the subject (mainstream media that is). As usual. This is just unforgivable. When are we going to all stand up to the Israel lobby's bullying of our country and the manipulation of our media not to mention the constant theft of our tax dollars to commit these inhumane acts, these war crimes against a largely helpless and innocent population? A population of people who's land Israel stole and is continuing to steal.
Whatever goodwill or mercy or sympathy they or we may have felt they were entitled to due to the holocaust is over. The limit has been reached and breached as far as I'm concerned.
Everywhere I look, people are finding themselves more and more willing to make extremely negative statements about Israel and Jews in general. While I realize that it is the actions of the government more so than the people; the people of Israel had better realize that a good number of people all over the world have had just about enough of this bullshit.
When the tide turns, and rest assured it will, there will be hell to pay...and they'll find no sympathy for their plight in my house.
The shall reap what they have sown. Again.
The question is; will there be any Palestinians left alive to see that day?
It's up to us.
The Media and the U.S. Polititians are controlled by the "Jewish Lobby". .Loud voices say there is no such group. .There are any number of Prominent Jewish Leaders telling us that its only a conspiracy myth.
Yet the Media is always one sided...Israel is the brave under dog, Israel is the U.S. loyalist military ally, and Israel is the one bright shining example of Democracy in the East. The Presidential Candidates of political parties are striving "the Jewish Vote", the Jewish Funding, and the blessing of the "Jewish Lobby".
Every Candidate promises to increase the Military Arms Funding to Israel, and guarantees no strings and no questions.
If there is no sinister and powerful "Jewish Lobby"; then how did the United States get partnered up in the extermination of the people of Palestine??????????????
the newspaper of record frames the context.
"that makes the conflict sound like a roughly even match"
then the newspaper of record baits the voters.

and thats the problem, mr chernus, the people are not rational. they are driven by their own biographies that are often infused w/ falsehoods (god/devil - absolute x/y). actually the article demonstrates how orwellian our world has become. the propoganda (doublespeak) has become gospel truth. it's not israel trying to eradicate the existence of palestinian people (it's called genocide), it's actually hamas that's out to destroy israel (which falsely claims territorial rights based on religious interpretation of their own books, notice the new israeli capital is in jerusalem).
if there ever was a justification for UN intervention (actually in israel and palestine) it's now. a competent president would suspend us military aide, and approach others in the security council to mandate a UN presence. i think we have to go with the candidate who exercises better judgment overall (including campaign tactics), obama. although i sincerely doubt he's capable of solving this problem (israeli violations of human rights). UN, ICC are the proper venues. stopping us military aid now is an immediate step.
but the problem is definitely beyond a repub/dem presidential problem....

{"aipac, Asher explained, is loyal to its friends and merciless to its enemies. In 1982, Asher led a campaign to defeat Paul Findley, a Republican congressman from Springfield, Illinois, who once referred to himself as "Yasir Arafat's best friend in Congress," and who later compared Arafat to Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
"There was a real desire to help Findley out of Congress," Asher said. He identified an obscure Democratic lawyer in Springfield, Richard Durbin, as someone who could defeat Findley. "We met at my apartment in Chicago, and I recruited him to run for Congress," he recalled. "I probed his views and I explained things that I had learned mostly from aipac. I wanted to make sure we were supporting someone who was not only against Paul Findley but also a friend of Israel."
Asher went on, "He beat Findley with a lot of help from Jews, in-state and out-of-state. Now, how did the Jewish money find him? I traveled around the country talking about how we had the opportunity to defeat someone unfriendly to Israel. And the gates opened." Durbin, who went on to win a Senate seat, is now the Democratic whip. He is a fierce critic of Bush's Iraq policy but, like aipac, generally supports the Administration's approach to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Durbin says that he considers Asher to be his "most loyal friend in the Jewish community."}
it isn't that zionist in america are particularly wealthy (relative to other elites in US),but they have an uncanny ability to make wise financial investments (watch the spielberg film munich).it's not biggoted, the NRA has 40times the members of aipac, yet aipac gets it's policy positions.
a complete list from 2006 races of aipac $$$ in congressional races.
http://www.wrmea.com/archives/July_2007/0707019.html
if obama can raise such sums over the inet for the presidential campaign, it's not inconceivable that groups representing palestinian and arab voices could raise funds to counterbalance the aipac $$$> it's not the money their spending to buy these politicians, it's how they target the politicians. progressives need to learn from theses murderers. better organizing is required.
of course this assumes their will continue "to be" a palestinian people, or another way of looking at it, israels animosity/brutal behavior towards her neighbors, will bring wrath (possibly nuclear wrath) upon themselves and the palestinians..
....peace.....
Remember the USS Liberty!!!!
A good example of their friendship -
http://www.gtr5.com/
On June 8, 1967, US Navy intelligence ship USS Liberty was suddenly and brutally attacked on the high seas in international waters by the air and naval forces of Israel. The Israeli forces attacked with full knowledge that this was an American ship and lied about it. Survivors have been forbidden for 40 years to tell their story under oath to the American public. This USS Liberty Memorial web site tells their story and is dedicated to the memory of the 34 brave men who died.
The Attack
After surveilling USS Liberty for more than nine hours with almost hourly aircraft over flights and radar tracking, the air and naval forces of Israel attacked our ship in international waters without warning. USS Liberty was identified as a US naval ship nine hours before the attack by Israeli reconnaissance aircraft and continuously tracked by Israeli radar and aircraft thereafter. Sailing in international waters at less than five knots, with no offensive armament, our ship was not a military threat to anyone.
The Israeli forces attacked without warning and without attempting to contact us. Thirty four Americans were killed in the attack and another 174 were wounded. The ship, a $40 Million Dollar state of the art signals intelligence platform, was later declared unsalvageable and sold for scrap.
The Cover Up
Despite a near-uniform consensus that the Israeli attack was made with full knowledge that USS Liberty was a US Navy ship, the Johnson administration began an immediate cover-up of this fact. Though individual administration officers continued individually to characterize the attack as deliberate, the Johnson administration never sought the prosecution of the guilty parties or otherwise attempted to seek justice for the victims. They concealed and altered evidence in their effort to downplay the attack. Though they never formally accepted the Israeli explanation that it was an accident, they never pressed for a full investigation either. They simply allowed those responsible literally to get away with murder.
Anti-Semitism and the Anti-American Apologists
.
The USS Liberty Memorial site abhors the racist and ill-informed positions taken by the Liberty Lobby, the American Free Press, and similar anti-Semitic organizations. We repudiate their comments and oppose them in every way. The campaign for accountability for the attack on USS Liberty has no room for hatemongers. We do not seek harmfor any country or people, only accountability for the criminal acts perpetrated against us.
Nonetheless, the legion of pro-Israel, anti-American apologists, while small, makes up for its lack of numbers and inability to mount any kind of legitimate defense by launching loud, vicious ad hominem attacks on anyone who attempts to raise the issue of the attack being deliberate. These anti-American apologists refuse to discuss the facts of the case. Rather they rely on "big lie" propaganda and attack anyone who questions the Israeli position as being "anti-Semitic".
For detailed information about the power of the pro-Israel lobby, please read The Israel Lobby and US Foreign Policy. See also, The Pro-Israel Lobby.
The ability to "tread lightly when they talk about the Israel-Palestine conflict" is criterion #1 for "electability" of a US presidential candidate.

Bernice said "Any number of members of Congress who are unfailingly astute when it comes to most other foreign policy issues* are believers in the AIPAC/Zionist line when it comes to "poor little Israel.""
Well, I know for a matter of fact, as my congressman once told me himself, that he and others know the truth about Israel and the Palestinians, but believe it would cost them their jobs if they tried to do anything or say anything about it. That is the prevailing belief and that belief alone works, whether true or not, to keep the pols in line.
Jews believe Hamas is dead set on destroying Israel.
The people of Israel believe this, but the government doesn't, they promote this notion to be able to continue trying to take the land. The government knows very well that Hamas would accomodate them. They don't want that, they want the land.
When the BBC, CNN, or Fox tell me something I naturally think exactly the opposite. They tell me the Palestinians are militants I say freedom fighters, Hamas are trying to destroy Israel, Israel is destroying Palestine. And so it goes on and will continue if Clinton gets into the Shite House. I don't think you have to be very bright to know what's going on, the Arabs have been split, every little difference between one group and another has been amplified and exploited, almost every M.E. country is headed by a European/USA despot and has been for many many years so who gets into the Shite House is of little importance, the slaughter will continue ad - finitum.
I haven't met one Jewish person under the age of 50 who supports Israel in their holocaust on the Palestinian people.

curmudgeon99,
If the US warships stayed in US waters incidents like the Liberty and Cole would never happen. The idea that warships are harmless because they don't carry armements is naive to say the least.
The Cole was damaged while tied up alongside in Aden, a place I know well since I was stationed there with the British Army. Where were the guards, how could an inflatable get anywhere near a warship with a trained crew. The fact is the US military is about as much use as a chocolate kettle, they should stay at home and hope the bluff works.
curmudgeon99; Thank You for the post.

Ira, you must have noticed in the NYTimes article that Jews everywhere were incensed when Hillary hugged Yasir Arafat's wife back in 1999. The Jerusalem press said "she'd learned her lesson." The number of Jews who disagree with American policies in the middle east when it comes right down to it, is small, an issue you skirted around. The bigger issue is Jewish money. According to their own estimates, they fund 50% to 60% of campaigns, mostly Democratic. John Edwards campaign chief, David Bonior, had advocated fair treatment for Palestinians and Edwards campaign financing never recovered. Much information is available in the Jewish press, both U.S. and Israeli. You're right about an important issue: Israeli support of American involvement in Mid-East politics poses a massive threat to us. For example, Russia's Putin has said that no attach on Syria will go unmet. That was missing from press coverage.
Please read and pass it on.

Corvo: i do know a jew, 52 years old, who is dead set against Israel and sees the truth clearly. He is exceptional, and my best friend. He believes the jewish support for Israel is essentially universal.
