Why the Muslim Smear is Bigger than Islam
The right wing smear campaign against Barack Obama is intensifying, with false claims that the Christian, patriotic Senator actually harbors a secret Muslim history and hates America so much he won't even say the pledge of allegiance. The effort has morphed from Internet rumblings and chain emails, as The Nation reported in October, to high profile attacks from the G.O.P. this month -- before Obama has even locked up the nomination.
In the past week, a state Republican Party used the smear in a press release titled "Anti-Semites for Obama" - which it later revised; a radio host raised the innuendo while speaking at a John McCain rally -- McCain swiftly apologized for the remark; and Republican Congressman Jack Kingston went on national television to falsely claim that Obama "would not say the pledge of allegiance." Kingston also whined that Obama does not wear an American flag pin, drawing an MSNBC anchor to note Kingston was also pin-less. "I will wear one and I have worn one!" Kingston retorted.
So far, the Obama Campaign has effectively battled the multi-pronged smear with several tacks. Obama often prebuts the charges in campaign speeches; his aides circulate fact sheets and ply voters with letters from clergy and generals; and his Internet team bought Google ads targeting smear searches, in order to draw the curious to a fact page with videos of Obama reciting the pledge on the Senate floor. The campaign's anti-propaganda ranges from the comically blunt, like a November announcement that "Obama Is a Patriot Who Loves His Flag and His Country," to fairly thoughtful offerings, like a video message from a minister at Obama's church, sharing her experience with confusion about his faith. The minister, Jane Fisler Hoffman, explains how she truth-squaded a woman who told a Muslim man that Obama was also Muslim:
"We overheard it and jumped in and said two things: First of all, there's absolutely nothing wrong with being Muslim. But second of all, Senator Obama does not happen to be Muslim. He's a Christian and he's a member of our church."
The "Fact Check" video drew over 55,000 views on YouTube, since the campaign promoted it last month. Hoffman closes by noting one predicament of rebutting the lies about Obama's religion: "We don't want to go around saying, 'heck no he's not a Muslim!' -- as if that was a bad thing. It's not a bad thing. There are great Muslim people, but he doesn't happen to be - he's a Christian." And apart from the smear, Obama also speaks out on bigotry against a range of groups, including Muslims and immigrants. In a major speech this month, for example, Obama criticized the exploitation of fear to "turn" people against each other. "Fear can cloud our judgment. And suddenly we start scapegoating gay people, or immigrants, or people who don't look like us, or Muslims -- because our own lives aren't going well," he said, urging the audience to change that climate by standing up for higher principles.
Thus it was surprising to read Naomi Klein's argument in the new Nation:
So far, Obama's campaign has responded with aggressive corrections that tout his Christian faith, attack the attackers and channel a cooperative witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee. "Barack has never been a Muslim or practiced any other faith besides Christianity," states one fact sheet. "I'm not and never have been of the Muslim faith," Obama told a Christian News reporter. Of course Obama must correct the record, but he doesn't have to stop there. What is disturbing about the campaign's response is that it leaves unchallenged the disgraceful and racist premise behind the entire "Muslim smear": that being Muslim is de facto a source of shame. Obama's supporters often say they are being "Swiftboated," casually accepting the idea that being accused of Muslimhood is tantamount to being accused of treason.
True, they have aggressively corrected the record. But as the above links demonstrate, from the candidate on down, this campaign has also emphasized that there is nothing wrong with being a Muslim.
Yet Klein believes Obama must go further. "What he has never done," she writes, is "denounce the attacks themselves as racist propaganda, in this case against Muslims." The smears are clearly bigoted and offensive, to Muslims and others, and I think the campaign has denounced them as racist propaganda. But even if people expect more, in good faith outrage, let's remember that this is also bigger than Islam.
Like other right wing character assassination, the smear campaign is not simply aimed at the portion of the public exercised about Islam or the pledge of allegiance, anymore than swiftboating was only for the Vietnam generation. (About half of Americans do say they would be "less likely" to back a Muslim for president -- a summer poll showed 7% think Obama is Muslim -- while half say the same about a candidate over 70.) But the larger imperative is to undermine the character, credibility and honesty of the candidate, developing a resilient narrative to poison media coverage and stoke fundamental doubts about anything the candidate says. Just as Gore was attacked as a "serial exaggerator" and Kerry was presented as a man who "misrepresents" his record, this smear suggests that Obama has something to hide. Just listen to the smear operatives. Long after CNN debunked a false story about Obama attending a Muslim school from Insightmag.com, a right wing website, its editor told The Washington Post that "Muslim heritage" was "not so much" the issue. The real issue, he claimed, was Obama's supposed "concealment and deception" about his youth. Obviously the editor, Jeffrey Kuhner, has no credibility, but the response previews the playbook here. In this context, it is understandable that the Obama Campaign is focused on responding as bluntly and unambiguously as possible.

Show AllThe right-wingers will use anything they can to bring down Obama, especially if it pushes the spotlight off their failures. Not only is he a crypto-Muslim, but he's also a gay, Mexican adulterer with an expensive haircut. And he'll surrender to the terrorists! And he's a leader of the conspiracy of the Illuminati!
Another Obama smear out there is that he's a crypto anti-Semite (mostly due to the associations of his church's pastor, a Louis Farrakhan fan), which has been making the rounds amongst Jewish voters. All Obama fans should be well advised that the right wing smear machine will be out for blood because he is their worst nightmare. Said right wing smear machine does well financially when there is a divided populace in atmosphere of constant political bloodletting. Obama, campaigning as a "uniter," threatens seriously their future earning power.
The right wing is afraid of Obama - I really can't understand given his pro-capitalist oligarchy support.
Notice how the Repuglicans are attacking Obama in hopes of getting Clinton as the Dem candidate who they know will be easy to defeat.
"Why this story is a complete waste of time." This article wastes time and space talking pie in the sky. The war, the economy, the environment, health care, immigration, and corruption in government are some real topics that are more important than analyzing dirty political tricks. With so much wrong with the system it's a waste of time to talk about individuals. We need to change the kingdom, not just the king.

I refuse to pledge allegiance to a flag. So what?
For all who rightly point out that Obama is not that far to the left, remember that the smearing is available for all threats to the oligarchy, big or small. They don't need to smear a Kucinich, because they can more easily marginalize him. Before the Obama smears got going, however, the smear machine went after Edwards--and to my frequent dismay, many CD posters took in the stuff about the hair cut. As for NRA Freemdom's remark that the smears are emanating from the Clinton camp, "not exactly right wing." Think again on that one.
We must be honest enough to admit that this all started with the Clinton campaign sending out those emails. The Clintons are disgusting and worthy of contempt.
Meanwhile "Christian" nutjob John Hagee's endorsement is welcomed by McCain, and few pundits remark about it. Obama's campaign should start associating McCain with such extremist pseudo-Christian extremists by publicizing Hagee's horrendously offensive, extreme statements about 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, and Jews.
The Reich wing's vicious and low blow against Obama is why we need to let go of doctinaire leftist "purity" and get behind the best chance we have to advance our hopes.By defending Obama and supporting his quest to set a more civilized and "We The People" tone in Washington.Onece he is in,we can hold his foot to the fire. The best hope for democratizing our elections is to work to elect Greens and such to lower political posts and work up. Fight for "instand run-offs and simular reforms.Another four years of a Repugnant/Neocon Administration, isn't going to help.
Sorry for the mispelled words. Ay kan spel jest fin!:-)
"The right wing is afraid of Obama - I really can't understand given his pro-capitalist oligarchy support."
The reason for this behavior can be understood if one reads Herman and Chomsky's "Manufacturing Consent", where they coined the term "flack generation" for such behavior. This is simply the need to continue to create the illusion of ideological poles where in reality no substantial differences in the elite concensus actually exist.
This illusion works so well that at the working and coordinator class level, people really come to regard people like the the Clintons and Obama as crazy leftists on one hand, or progressive saviors on the other in spite of the actual facts on the ground.
I don't say the pledge anymore. I am no longer religious. My eyes have been opened.
So, Obama's Dad was Muslim, his mother an atheist. He's black, and white. But we call him black. He has a funny name. But I'm voting for him.
Over at The Nation website, this piece http://www.thenation.com/blogs/campaignmatters?bid=45&pid=292542 is attributed not to Ari Berman but to Ari Melber. Is someone at Common Dreams not paying attention, or does Ari Berman write under a pseudonym?
Hey, politics is a dirty game in most places in the world but in the U.S. it is disgusting.
The Repubs will do and say anything to ensure one of their own will remain in a despotic position in the White House and the Democs are too divided (a white woman and a black American?) to pose any real sort of opposition.
I hold grave fears for the survival of our world.

The energy in politics is terribly negative, destructive. I scanned this article. That's all I can do with most of this stuff: I read the headline and know right away that the words are not worth my attention.
The question is, how did the US manage to accumulate—and continue to spew—such bad vibes? There is something wrong at the core of the nation, the very core of its people, that this negativity flourishes. Of course, it will tear the nation to bits, economic and military might (whatever they are) notwithstanding.
It's truly a spiritual problem. The rule of law is finished as long as human nature stays stuck in this mud.
The journalists may have a significant role in keeping the nation mired in negativity.
There exist today good and progressive forces the likes of which have never before existed. But the media give them no coverage.
It's very sad. Without happiness, without peace, there is no life.

"We don't want to go around saying, 'heck no he's not a Muslim!' — as if that was a bad thing. It's not a bad thing. There are great Muslim people, but he doesn't happen to be - he's a Christian."
Touting Obama's belief in one irrational fantasy over another ain't gonna get him anywhere with the rationalists. Oh wait, I forgot this is the USA one of the most unreasonably superstitious nations in the world.
Well leave it to the Dimocrats to blow a gimme election. If HRC is nominated, which seems more and more unlikely, I think she has an even chance against McCain, but will likely have a rough time getting anything done. If BHO is nominated the at the general election the voters will get to chose between a black, maybe Muslim, with the middle name Husein and a good old white fella name John. Who do you think mr. and mrs. middle America are gonna bush the button for?
If this election so danged important to the Dimos why the heck didn't the nominate someone with less obvious hurdles to overcome?
As far as Obama's ability to refute the absurdity of the claims, once one is put in the position of having to go around saying, I am not a Muslim, what is the message that comes across?
Obama ** Muslim, the "is a" or "is not a" gets filtered out.
Democrats = Losers
Good riddance I say!
Obama is a Christian???!!!! Well, he just lost my vote.
I know we have a redacted version of the Constitution, I presume we still have the FIRST, why should anyone in this country ever have to explain their beliefs or choice to not have a religious belief to any-damn-one?
where is the 'agency' to inject new imagery aimed at demolish ubersexist component in muslim culture?
israel should also tackle his own tabu
and not demand obedience to their expansionist bloody subtext. time to show the hidden deck.
If he gets the nomination; by November my ears will be bleeding.
I'm already getting a migraine, "Ah, JEEZ, not this **** again!" As far as the analyses go, I don't WANT to understand the mind of Goebbels.
All the horrific, important, complex issues in the world, that I SHOULD be informed about; and I get a cartoon gospel tract, 24-7 on 999 Cable Stations.
Money buys the Congress... Money buys the Media... the people get a steady flow of BS and vote away my liberty and my money... on and on, ad nauseum.
It's probably too late to suggest the option of Clean Elections (Public Campaign Financing). Nevertheless, absolutely EVERY problem we talk about could be resolved with that single fix.
the revolution will not be televised
I can well imagine there is going to be a smear campaign against Obama. The GOP has become a party of bottom feeders! It's gone on every election. There is an element in this country that feeds on this type of slime. They listen to the venom Rush Limbaugh spews daily and call it informative. They feed on the kind of hate that the GOP generates and it's a cancer devouring our nation. It happened last election with the 'Swift Boat' campaign. That's the only way the GOP can win anymore. Is to slime their opponent. Drag him down to their level, making it an even playing field.
Clinton started the smear campaign against Obama before the republicans said anything. Give credit where credit is due.
The people who are stupid enough to believe this crap are the same people that Bush has had eating out of his hand for years. God willing, the population of the US has learned a thing or two about Republican politics during the last several years. A Republican will say or do anything to get what he/she wants.
Patriotic? MY ASS! No, not that either!
How sad the Obama campaign can't be more creative. "I am not a Muslim" is ridiculous as pointed out above.
How about using that picture to demonstrate how to gain respect by treating others with respect? How about showing a picture of Princess Diana in African dress while visiting the "colonies"?
These people cannot be taken head on. You have to turn their criticism into praise and their attacks back on them.
And why did Obama say he'd go back to Iraq if Al Quaeda set up a base? He really wants to do Darfur.
Barack Obama's middle name is "Hussein." This is his middle name and will continue to be unless he changes it. Get used to it.He claims to be the candidate of change. He might want to begin with his middle name.
It's not the Republican Party who will first take advantage of this situation. It's the Clintons.
There's a great deal wrong with being a Muslim.Their founder said in no uncertain terms," Where ever you find Christians and Jews, kill them." Obama would be well advised to deny Muslim connections as soon as possible.

Yahoo has been tracking searches in Ohio and Texas almost all the ones about Obama are about whether or not he's a Muslim. Clinton may win but she should be ashamed.
