Politicians of all stripe, in all ages, have had to be sensitive to headgear and to the possibility of "gotcha" photography. Remember Michael Dukakis in a tanker's helmet in his own PR firm's disasterous TV ads? Or Estes Kefauver wearing a full eagle feather war bonnet?

That said, two things are significantly different about this flap of Barack Obama wearing a Somali elder's turbin that Drudge (and apparently Hillary Clinton's campaign) are circulating.

First, the photo-op was on a visit to Africa in 2006, not somewhere on a media-covered campaign trail. Maybe Drudge and U-Tube are just breaking new ground here, but I doubt that we are about to enter an age in which candidates in their old Halloween, or Mardi Gras, or Bohemian Grove attire have to worry, but you can never tell. If the Guilliani campaign hadn't imploded on the launch pad, maybe photos of Rudi in drag would have been circulated against him by his rivals. Context is all important.

Second, the Obama-in-a-turbin photo arises squarely in the context of the prior Swift Boat attacks upon Barack as a closet Muslim. For Drudge, it's just a renewal of right wing inflammatory bigotry. For Hillary's campaign to republish it as something legitimately germane to the campaign for the Democratic nomination would be truly reprehensible.

Finally, I can't help but say I wish Barack Obama would get his staff stay further above the gutter level than Plouffe's catty rejoinder. I don't give a damn about staff shake ups in the Clinton camp in Iowa and New Hampshire, and it's tacky to bring it up as part of a response.

What should be decried here is the racism, religious, and cultural bigotry.
