Impeachment Critical to Set Standards for Future Administrations
There seems to be considerable confusion as to what is being asked of the Boulder City Council regarding an "Impeachment Resolution." It is not an "Impeachment Resolution." To quote from the resolution:
"BE IT RESOLVED that the Citizens of Boulder and the Boulder City Council believe that there is sufficient evidence to commence hearings in the House of Representatives that may lead to impeachment of either or both President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney."
In other words, the resolution simply urges that the House of Representatives perform its constitutional duty to investigate allegations of violations of our Constitution.
Boulder is hardly unique in this. More than 90 other cities ranging from Detroit and Cambridge to Chapel Hill, N.C., and Brattleboro, Vt., have taken action, many much stronger than what we're asking. National public opinion surveys find that more than half of American voters believe that both Bush and Cheney have committed serious crimes against the Constitution.
This is not just a liberal sentiment. Among others, Bruce Fein, a constitutional scholar who served as associate deputy attorney general under President Ronald Reagan, insists that the concerns are serious enough to be investigated.
We have been asked why bother when Bush and Cheney will be out of office soon.
Every future president could, and probably will, use and expand on the powers usurped by this administration. If the rule of law, truth telling, openness, and the Bill of Rights don't count for Bush and Cheney, will those ideals be more sacred to Obama, Clinton or McCain? Will it be legitimate for future presidents to redefine terms like "torture?" Will it be okay to pull out fingernails or gouge out eye balls? Will it be okay to use signing statements to change laws that Congress has just passed? Bush has done so nearly 1,000 times, some with serious consequences. Other presidents have used signing statements to clarify language, but not to change the intent of the law.
To those who say we should get over it and move on, we ask you to consider the following: Could our children be falsely accused and not have the right of habeas corpus (the right to face their accusers and know the charges)? Or could they be disappeared as was done by Pinochet in Chile? Will they have the protections given us in the Bill of Rights and in the Constitution? Could they be arbitrarily defined as "enemy combatants" or "terrorists" with no legal rights, per Bush's presidential directives?
Who wins the next election is of minor importance in comparison to the question of whether future administrations are bound to operate under the rule of law and to do so openly in full compliance with the Constitution.
We need to establish, once and for all time, that we are not to be dragged into war based upon lies, that we will not tolerate torture, that we expect full compliance with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and that we will not tolerate signing statements that change the meaning of laws. The purpose of impeachment is to set standards for future administrations. Even to begin impeachment hearings will serve notice that they will be held accountable.
Why Boulder City Council? Impeachment is a matter for citizens. It is important because it is mentioned in the Constitution six times. House rules make it clear that the House will accept petitions from local governments. Court cases point to the same conclusion. Our City Council should represent Boulder citizens in matters of public importance. In their oath of office, they promised to "support the Constitution of the United States". There was nothing in that oath that gave "potholes" precedence over the Constitution. We should expect them to take serious interest in both.
Is Boulder so insular that we should not be concerned about the shredding of our Constitution and the loss of our civil rights? Do we really think it cannot happen here or will not affect us? (See Naomi Wolf's book, "The End of America.")
Citizenship is not a spectator sport.

Show All"I'm surprised by the compliant nature of individual Congressmen."
I think they feel they have too much to lose.
The first step of each of any journey, is taken by each of us (alone).
So it is for grander actions written across the larger canvas of politics.
Let us each BE the thing we desire, to create the change that we want and need. Intention is an act of creation, and we all can do that, and all change begins exactly in that manner.
If we don't like what we're creating, we need to change ourselves into whatever else is needed to become consistent with the desired results. Our individual and overall country's major frailty is in attempting to take different actions while maintaining who we are -- which immediately leads us back to where we started.
When who we are being is consistent with the actions that we are taking, real fundamental change occurs as if magically inspired.

If America is to be salvaged, Bush must be impeached as the first step in restoring a grossly defiled Constitution.
The corporate media is the heart of the problem. People who want impeachment would do well to organize large demonstrations at centralized corporate media headquarters. The same might be said for the anti-war movement. The monstrous conglomeration of media and its effective merger with government has created a beast like no other a people has ever faced.
Support Sheehan's bid to upset Pelosi is another practical suggestion for those in the bay area.
Impeaching the Deciding Duo (and holding them accountable in a court of law for crimes against The United States, it's citizens, and humanity in general) is vital if American justice means anything to its citizens and the world.
It's vital to impeach and hold them accountable NOW to restore faith in all political parties.
Holding them accountable is tragic, but no less so than the deaths of over a million people (including those who died on 9/11) who wanted no more than get to through the day, cuddle their kids, talk about their futures, share experiences, . . .
The one thing the deciding duo (and all who supported them) can never
escape is what they have done.

"The Democrats will not push for impeachment (even though they are not the GOD party), because they believe in decency and fair play according to the constitutional laws."
So covering up torture in violation of U.S. and international law is decency and fair play?
So not doing anything about spying on American citizens in violation the 1978 FISA act and in violation of the fourth amendment to the Constitution is decency and fair play?
So not doing anything about locking up American citizens for three and a half years without filing charges in violation of the law and the Constitution is decency and fair play?
So denying prisoners the right of habeas corpus in violation of the Constitution is decency and fair play?
Lobo Gris
The Democrats will not push for impeachment (even though they are not the GOD party), because they believe in decency and fair play according to the constitutional laws. The Repugs had people like Tom Delay and Gingrich who believe in getting the job done by any means available, and did not allow any dissent in their ranks.
Another big difference in the parties is that the Dems make at least some effort to work for the benefit of the country, and as we have witnessed the last eight years that has not always been the case. The priviledged few billionaires, cronies and idealogues have been the first priority from the start and will probably continue another four or eight years.
The USA is not a theocracy,it is not a race,it is not an ethnisity it is the contract, the agreement to a set of standards that unite us under that contract known as the constitution ,when it is shredded as
is happening now by both Republicans and willingly supported by the Democrats this country known as America no longer exists!
We have enough jails to put them in! Impeach! (Investigate!) Try. Run out all the stuff against them! Show them what they did. (Caskets, photos and film of the dead. Katrina victims in the "coliseum." Lists of the dead read over a LOUD speaker. Pitiless smilers and phony hand- drawn airplane art aerial photos of Sadam's atomic manufacturing trucks! Or whatnot (NOT!) Cities and towns devastated.) Blitzkrieg makers! Impeach and try 'em! NOW!
"Suddenly it's important to uphold the law. Dream on." I understand and have to agree with that statement just above. And at the same time, it is ALWAYS time to start TRYING to uphold the law---so I thank these authors and activists for everything they're doing. "America" has been soaked in bloody war crimes since colonial times. Now progressivism has caught up with "progress," and we are rightly, increasingly appalled at what the empire is doing to preserve its profitable injustice. What I want to do is vote and otherwise help virtually every incumbent out of office---we need fresh unbribed-away citizens who GO IN RESOLVED not to sell out to the back door lobbyists, DNC and GOP fascists...and who really are so "romantic" as to believe in the real core of our democracy, Equal Justice Under The Law. If we can do that, by almost any world-class measure, Bush and ALL his assistants would go to jail...
I'm surprised by the compliant nature of individual Congressmen. Without a doubt there should be six or eight strong men and woman that would stand up in front of Congress and physically shut it down if necessary. Expressing their dissent and disgust at the top of their voices for as long as it takes including hunger strikes if necessary. The cowardly Congressional leadership needs to be awakened, and now. They need to lose all sense of that comfortable feeling they now have. An earthquake of dissent is past due.
When thinking about 2008, take into consideration what your candidate of choice feels about impeachment. I'm guessing there's not to many McCain or Clinton fans here, but for all those Obama lovers, make sure you know how Obama feels about impeachment and then ask yourself, "Is he really the change he claims to be?"
The argument that Congress has more important things to do then to investigate what are serious and arguably impeachable offenses committed by this Administration is ludicrous. "Moving on" and "getting over it" without an impartial investigation would be tantamount to building a dream house on a foundation that is cracked...its integrity compromised. The foundation must be fixed and made structurally sound or the house, however cosmetically correct, will not last long. Thank you Boulder and the other cities as well, for doing what needs to be done.
"Why pick on him (W) exclusively?"
Its the order of magnitude, lizard. The Bush Administration commits as many crimes in a month as the aforementioned administrations committed in a four year term.
FDR was guilty of impeachable offenses. Nothing happened.
Truman was a war criminal like FDR. Nothing
Nixon was a war criminal. Impeached for a burglary.
Reagan was a war criminal. Loved by all.
George Bush I was a war criminal. Nothing.
Clinton was a war criminal. Impeached for lying about a BJ.
Bush II is a war criminal. Why pick on him exclusively?
It is A US tradition, starting since at least Lincoln, to allow Presidents to break the law with impunity. Now it is suddenly extremely important to uphold the law.
Dream on.
In 1974 articles of impeachment against Richard Nixon passed the House and were on their way to the Senate for a trial. Nixon ducked out before that could happen. Nixon's crimes against the constitution were far fewer in number than those committed by Bush/Cheney. Yet the congress was able to get rid of him. Here it is 34 years later and this regime of goose-stepping criminals goes untouched and will remain so until (we hope) those egg sucking shit-weasels are out of office. What has changed in those 34 years? Why has the Democratic party become a willing and eager accomplice to the crimes of the Bush regime? Obviously, in something as complex as this, there must be many, many reasons. One thing is certain, however. Bush represents the beginning of the end of what little democracy is left in this nation. We will now slowly (or perhaps not so slowly) become a mercantile tyranny like China. The national symbol will be a picture of a naked Uncle Sam with his thumb up his ass, the caption below reading simply: FUCK YOU!
It's interesting, all this talk about impeachment. The fact that the President doesn't give a damn about the rules of the game anymore hasn't sunk in it seems. George makes the rules!
While Americans are busy taking an eternity to elect another President (as if the current one isn't a big enough disaster to warrant getting rid of the Office of President altogether), George is running the country (into the ground some say) to suit Corporations and Religious Fundamentalists.
While America burns, plaintively people cry, "Impeach, Impeach," while George just laughs!
Mantras will not save America!

If we had more honest and courageous people in the house like Dennis Kucinch, we would be able to impeach Bush and Cheney for their high crimes.
The House won't investigate impeachment because they'll end up implicating themselves in the process. They're ALL dirty. Each and every politician in government has taken at least one bribe in their career. I'm sure, if you looked hard enough, you could catch each and every one of them in some illegal activity. Therefore, they won't turn on the lights to expose Bush and Cheney because they'll be caught with their pants down as well.
Here is a novel idea: impeach Pelosi, Reid, and Hoyer first. Then the way will be clear to impeach Bush and Company. Wake up!
Grounds for impeachment:
Treason, bribery and other high crimes and misdemeanors.
Congress, awash in corporate money, is equally liable for at least bribery, and anyone who voted for the Patriot Act or the Military Commissions Act is guilty of treason to the Constitution of the United States.
That's why they won't impeach.
Can we not go one step further?
Can we not establish the illegality of the actions taken by the office of the president, and then try him in court even after he is done?
Make them serve hard time for lynching the constitution and treason. For if betraying the country and lying to its people while serving in the highest office of the country is not treason, what is?
"Impeachment Critical to Set Standards for Future Administrations"
Which is exactly why it will never happen.
Future administrations look forward to not having to adhere to any standards whatsoever...
¿ If I man's integrity is known based upon his words and actions,
how can a great nations not stand by the words and actions that sired its creation (being so inconsistent with its later actions used to maintain it) ?
Ragdoll -- we elect representatives who are supposed to represent us. We have to remind them how BEST to represent us -- and to harangue them as necessary. Ideally, we shouldn't have to eagle-eye everything they do, but it is important that we watch and provide input as necessary and that input is given reasonable consideration. They are our representatives but it is still our government, the government of We the People. We have to pay attention if we wish to maintain some semblance of a democracy: "The price of liberty is eternal vigilance."
Now, I'm going to print out this excellent article and send it to a few congress critters. Please consider doing likewise. Yellow magic marker it for effect.
Sheer hypocrisy is what we are witnessing here. All of the "good" Americans backed this "war" president who wanted war for no other reason than to grab power and riches in some neo-imperialistic dream. Lie on top of lie on top of lie until this mysterious shifting mountain actually looked like something real to the suckers (mainstream America).
But the shifting mountain is not real. Bush built a house on sand and its collapse will, hopefully, only be the collapse of this thug corporation's dream and not the U.S. itself. A lot of us want to put a stamp on this administration for future generations to see, label it wrong and illegal and immoral so that our children do not follow it's errors. I feel that this would be a good thing. But people are tired of fighting.
We fought over whether to back this monster as he lied his way into out hearts and minds. Progressives, especially, have an emotional stake in seeing these guys impeached. We have been spit on and yelled at, quite literally at first, and then constantly through the mouth sewers hired by the "conservative" society in which we also happen to live. We were told to shut our mouths and for the most part we did for awhile. The idea of Bushites in pickup trucks held some sway over our survival instincts (sad).
Of course, everything came out into the open and now those conservatives are all trying to blend in. Supposedly nobody much likes Bush anymore. What happened? Where's my apology? I won't hold my breath. And I won't hold my breath about this country sending a message on morality to future generations by impeaching this sad and criminal administration. Overall, the country just wants them to go away. No more fighting. I guess I don't have to worry about getting hit by a baseball bat anymore, but i do have to live with the hypocrites, also known as half the population of the United States of America, who stood by this man despite the information then available discrediting his brazen and ultimately criminal stance.
Nice try, though, Mr. Bush, with that War President thing.
too much green tea typos:
" members of the various branches of government have oil and defense investments."
Of course in our miserable situation we are fortunate to have so many parties of all kinds trying their best to see to it that our government executes its most basic of all functions, protecting and defending the Constitution of the United States of America.
Why then do we as citizens, in addition to paying all these government salaries, have to spend so much money contributing to these worthy groups trying to get Congresss to do its job, and so much of our time signing petitions, searching for the news, trying to get these people to do their most basic job? Some days I find it maddening.
Which is not to say I don't appreciate the efforts and dedication of all these organizations I hear from several times a week, thank goodness for the generosity of the people who spend even more time and effort trying to make our voices heard.
All true and important ideals that need to be repeated over and over again.
However, the problem remains that Congress is complicit in the Bush/Cheney crimes against humanity. I would expect that if the same international law applied to the Nazis were used to try certain members of the Executive branch and Congress and the Pentagon, that many would be dancing at the end of a rope.
Both parties are in terribly deep with the military complex and Big Oil while catering to the Israeli lobby. Surprise, we have a Middle East oil war that no one will shut down. Was is not Lieberman that drafted the Iraq War Resolution in the Senate ? And was it not Feinstein that gave her husband a $600 million Iraq reconstruction contract ?
And if the complete truth were known we might be very surprised about how many memebers of the various branches of government have oil and defense investemnts.
It is worth noting that Clinton began bombing in the Balkans (related to oil pipelines) without any approval from Congress and supported Turkish atrocities as related to pipelines.
The examples are endless, and I wish I had a clear answer. This is yet another chapter in the sick history of American imperial aggression and nearly identical to the Vietnam era other than the obvious issue of oil.
Unfortunately many Americans still think we are the good guys fighting evil terrorists for God and country. The glaring truth that we are in Iraq killing people in an attempt to steal their resources seems difficult for many to see or accept.
But if there is to be any improvement at all, it will begin with honest information reaching as many people as possible and then beginning a national dialogue of some sort to create a major shift in public opinion and perhaps even a cultural and political shift over time.
After repeated warfare disasters and colonial failures, the Europeans adopted different ways of interacting with the rest of the world. Maybe Americans need to suffer more.
And how strange, at the moment the $Euro is a solid currency and the $dollar is dying. And recent polls indicate Americans are concerned with the economy and that getting out of Iraq is a step towards recovery. Self-interest and economic survival are powerful motivations that speak to everyone.
And then there is our neglected educational systems and a bogus corporate health care system. Shifting military industrial spending over to education and national health care would improve the domestic economy and build a better future.
While Big Oil and the military complex are wallowing in profit, the rest of the nation is going downhill in a hurry. This fact is becoming more and more difficult to deny.
Perhaps there will be a major change brought on by the economic pain resulting from the decline of our pseudo-empire floating on a sea of war crimes. A moral awakening could be along way off or might never come, but the economic crunch is already here.
