Vice President Rice?
Democrats who think it's going to be a cakewalk into the White House next November had best remember one name: Condoleezza Rice.
John McCain is a formidable candidate in his own right, but if he has the political imagination to do it, he can cause the party of Jefferson and Jackson indescribable angst with Rice as his vice-presidential pick.
Besides being the greatest two-for in GOP history, Rice brings other huge pluses to the decorated Vietnam hero. Indeed, she may be enough to elect the venerable hero/naval aviator.
McCain's troubles with the religious wing of his party could well evaporate with the churchgoing Rice at his side. She solidifies that part of his base overnight.
With Rice on the ticket, the GOP would have somebody to get enthusiastic about. The Secretary of State is immensely popular with Republicans. For a party that up to now has been clueless about how to run against either a woman or a person of color, Condoleezza Rice is pure political gold.
Woe to any Democrat who thinks taking her on in a debate is a sure thing. The woman is tough, fast on her feet and able to give better than she gets. Anyone who has seen her in action testifying in front of a hostile House or Senate committee knows that she will be able to wipe up the floor with a plodding, ordinary pol of a Democratic vice-presidential candidate. Take Rice lightly at your peril.
In the ordinary course of things the ideal vice-presidential candidate is relied upon to carry his or her home state and keep out of trouble. With Condi the GOP gets a lot more. It gets a superstar to match the Democrats' superstars. If it comes to name recognition, glamour and magnetism for conservatives, Condi is dandy. Also, it is a plus for the GOP team that she is a snappy dresser.
Rice's presence on the ticket deprives the Democrats of the we-are-more-diverse-than-thou argument. It makes McCain--whose ethnically diverse family includes an adopted daughter from Bangladesh--an even more attractive candidate for a certain kind of independent voter.
Rice can rightly be attacked for serving Bush and backing an unpopular and disastrous war. But McCain, who is extremely pro-war himself, is not going to select a running mate who is wishy-washy on Iraq. Rice is also said to have done a poor job running the State Department, where morale is supposed to have dropped faster than a subprime mortgage. However, you can put the number of voters who give a rodent's behind about the care and feeding of cookie-pushing diplomats in a phone booth, if phone booths still existed.
With Rice on the ticket the Republicans are freed up to run a much stronger negative campaign against either Clinton or Obama because the Secretary of State provides them with cover against charges of sexism or racism. They would be able to go after Obama's membership in Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Its minister, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr., with whom Obama is close, has won himself the militant tag from conservatives because of his association with Nation of Islam leader the Rev. Louis Farrakhan.
They can attack Hillary's experience claims as consisting of her being Bill's wife. They can challenge her boast that she is a strong, independent woman and paint her as a weak, hopelessly-in-love woman under the spell of a man subject not only to "bimbo eruptions" but also eruptions of smarmy deals with shady business figures.
Lastly, Rice is a notorious sports fan with excruciatingly detailed knowledge of much of its arcana. She's often said that her dream job is commissioner of the National Football League; however, in a pinch she would probably settle for Vice President of the United States.
Nicholas von Hoffman is the author of A Devil's Dictionary of Business, now in paperback. He is a Pulitzer Prize losing author of thirteen books, including Citizen Cohn, and a columnist for the New York Observer.

Show AllI think that the Regressives are cynical enough to run McCain/Rice ticket and their base will vote in droves so that they can say "see, we aren't racist, we have a darky candidate too", and I don't think McCain has any say in it. He has sold his soul to the beast, and it is in control.
Sarcasm aside, that would be the ticket that does it. The regressives LOVE Condi and her place on the ticket will reign in many wayward republicans. Any attacks on Rice will be construed by the regressive-controlled media as a racist attack and a victory would make Condaleeza the Cheney to McCain's Bush in effect becoming the nations (covert) first black president.
Rice dragged her feet for one month while Lebanon was shelled in the summer of 2006. Kofi Annan urged an immediate cease fire. Rice said that we were experiencing the birthpangs of a democracy. This coming from a woman who never had child.....
Rice knows she is a liability now because she caused so much destruction in Lebanon.
She proved that it is bad diplomacy to pay attention to those warmongers in Israel who are shooting themselves in the foot against their own country's best interest- now they have a lot of trouble in Lebanon which they could have avoided if it had not been destroyed so much in 2006...
Three words will define Rice's legacy as SecState: Mid-East Peace.
Well, there ain't any, not on her watch.
So given that her resume would not get past any reasonable HR department, any consideration that she might receive for VP nomination would be based on the cult of her personality. This is not, under any circumstance, grounds for nomination as the second most powerful person on the planet.
Do you HAVE to be a lying warmonger with no sense of compassion at all to be considered for a high office in the US?
Rice, for all her brains and talent, has been a disaster. Being on the Publican ticket would doom them to the rubbish heap of history.
She's associated with the failures of this administration...don't think that will go over well with the public.
She's associated with the failures of this administration...don't think that will go over well with the public.
you are all crazy.
if the president says someone's done a heckuva job, then they must have.
anyone been to new orleans lately?
Rice would not get the vote of even ONE black person. She is not one of them, and boy, do they ever know it.
I will always remember her quote in the original PNAC document "The only way this will come to pass is if we have a "Pearl Harbor" type event."
The objectives have come to pass. 'nuf said.
thank you petsr4ever. I'm not Afro-American, but even I'D smell this ploy a mile away. Does Mr. Hoffman honestly believe another 'black candidate' is really going to shake up the race just based on that? Shame on you, sir. Ms. Rice reeks of the Bush administration -- the current crop of Republicans wants to get as far away from that as possible.
I never knew those PNAC words were attributed to Condi?
Those are troubling words.
Who says our elections have to reflect what the public wants?
In 2004 I talked to several dyed-in-the-wool republicans who had never voted dem in over 50 years of elections, but refused to vote for that lying SOB Bush. To the contrary, I did not hear of one dem who was switching to Bush in 2004. Considering that the dems had a huge "vote or die" campaign and conservatives generally don't miss voting (to save on taxes and fight abortion), by my count it was a near statistical impossibility for Bush to win in 2004.
Especially after the venomous anti-black voter scams involving GOP loyalists in Florida's 2000 election, there were hardly any black voters planning to vote for Bush in 2004. The exit polls showed this clearly.
But when God is talking to you on a reg basis, there may be a moral imperative to fix the election. Miraculously, Bush won the black vote by a landslide in 2004. It was an absolutely unprecedented black voter swing towards the right in an election where black voters were still sore from taking it up the rear from the GOP in FLA 2000. In other words, those lying bastards cheated again!
My guess is that the GOP bastards are cheating by intercepting local (county) voter tallies as they are being emailed to the state Boards of Elections on "secure" lines.
Well, the country must be used to war criminals in the White House. Why not another?
...used to prosecute war criminals...
Condi, "mushroom cloud" Rice? Are you serious? LMAO...Yeah, it could happen, actually, I hope and pray it happens...
Two things about Condiliar. She's got the most obvious tell ever - her head unconsciously shakes "no" whenever she's lying. And forget her as VP - she's worn out, super frazzled and there's no way this racist country is ready to accept the idea of a black woman president, which, considering McCrazy's age and percolating anger, is too likely a possibility.
This author is thinking. Miss Rice is something fairly major to be concerned about if McCain were to choose her. But he probably won't, because he is noted for having bad judgment.
If he did, however, and the Democrats were to run Hillary, look out. Because, wrong or not on policy,
Rice is very, very fast-witted---enough so to maybe even trick an electorate with sports metaphors and ballgame stuff. Trivial? Of course. Effective? Yes.
Condyloma Rice gives me goose bumps!
Condi is nothing but a Bush groupie. Can any one remember one time when she was right about anything. She is wrong all of the time in support of her loverboy, Bush. She has set the woman's movement and African-American movement back 20 years. She is not an asset to any Republican. Choosing her only shows how far from reality the Republicans and von Hoffman live.
Wow
that would be a very interesting Match up.
But would McCain really pick a Bush Licker?
She is an Aquarius, and their star can never be discounted in this era.
Just look at MJ, Tiger and a big load of Basketball players.
If McCain-Rice does come about, there will defintely be a fight in November.
There are two things that we can wish for.
A. People are fed up of old Bushies.
B. McCain Runs out of money by August.
And if they win, we will again have a VP controlled government, and McCain will be dead in office, as a puppet, and maybe even in real life.
Condi'lying' Rice gives me the creeps...
This is completely wrong. McCain-Rice lets any Democrat argue that this is just a vote for Bush's third term, and that will stick.
Condi Rice? UGH!!!
That bubble-butt and that corncob walk would finally rise to the visual: "In over her butthead!"
She resembles a mutant vampire.
Great ticket: "The corpse and the vamp."
No way this would happen. The GOP depends too much on the white southern racist vote.
McCain and Rice: what a combo to tee off on! The Dems won't, but we can. Let's see. McCain - Because suicide bombers, who at least back up their convictions with their lives, are unavailable, and Tim McVeigh and Ted Kaczynski aren't also. Rice - There was nothing we could do to prevent 9/11. Yeah, that's the ticket!
"Rice can rightly be attacked for serving Bush and backing an unpopular and disastrous war."
Sometimes I question Common Dreams and why they let writers like Hoffman post anything at all. The sentence from the article minimizes Rice's travesties while revising history.
Does anyone not remember her testimony to the 9-11 commission? This alone would be enough to put her in jail, much less negate her candidacy. And this is but the tip of a sordid and mean-spirited tenure at NSA and at State.
Here it is again, Condesleeza lying for all to see:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYbWaMqWy7s
Another example of Condisleeza lying:
On September 8, 2002, according to a study by the Center For Public Integrity, "Condoleezza Rice, who was then Bush's national security adviser, followed Cheney that night on CNN's Late Edition. In answer to a question from Wolf Blitzer on how close Saddam Hussein's government was to developing a nuclear capability, Rice said: 'We do know that he is actively pursuing a nuclear weapon. We do know there have been shipments going into . . . Iraq, for instance, of aluminum tubes that really are only suited to—high-quality aluminum tools that only really suited for nuclear weapons programs, centrifuge programs.'"
Another example of Condisleeza lying:
On July 30, 2003, according to a study by the Center For Public Integrity, "in an interview with Gwen Ifill of PBS's NewsHour With Jim Lehrer, Condoleezza Rice said: 'What we knew going into the war was that this man was a threat. He had weapons of mass destruction. He had used them before. He was continuing to try to improve his weapons programs. He was sitting astride one of the most volatile regions in the world, a region out of which the ideologies of hatred had come that led people to slam airplanes into buildings in New York and Washington. Something had to be done about that threat and the president to simply allow this brutal dictator, with dangerous weapons, to continue to destabilize the Middle East.'
Just two days earlier, David Kay, the Bush administration's top weapons inspector in Iraq, had briefed administration officials. 'We have not found large stockpiles,' he told them. 'You can't rule them out. We haven't come to the conclusion that they're not there, but they're sure not any place obvious. We've got a lot more to search for and to look at.'"
And we have this wondeful tape from Olbermann proving Rice a liar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ASBuh72Re8&NR=1
So Mr. Von Hoffman, please urge Rice to run for VP. But unlike you, I won't be afraid. For the obvious reasons.
logrithmic and others who disparage the author: I feel that you have far too much confidence in how informed John and Jane Q Public are.
As you know, most of them AREN'T informed - by their choice. Most don't know or don't care about Condi's lies. I think the author is right on - it'd be a great ticket and the stupid morass that is most of this country will buy it hook, line, and sinker.
"Aluminum tubes", "yellowcake", and "smoking guns" are just the beginning of Condiweasle's legacy.
Let's not forget her pronouncements on the distasterous 2006 "Summer War" between Israel and Lebanon
"We are witnessing the birth pangs of the New Middle East"
and
"We don't want a ceasefire yet",
Rice told this to the United Nations Security Council in late July 2006 as Israel bombed families in a basement shelter at Qana, killing 28 civilians including 16 children and killed four UN Observers near Khiam and continued the relentless slaughter of more than 1,250 civilians.
Oh what a delicious possibility to contemplate! Ecitorial cartoonists could have a ball with the Manchurian candidate (McCain) and Superbitch (Lady Rice!). Code Pink--are you listening?
I'm puzzled by the proposition of Rice as "intelligent'. I suspect this is based on no more than an ability to talk under water, to have streams of words coming out that mean nothing but appear to mean something. No on who is "intelligent" could possibly have worked for the Bush administration. No one who is intelligent could possibly have defended every mindless MIddle Eastern policy as vigorously as this woman has done. Poor old Colin Powell couldn't stomach his own lying performance to the UN. One performance. Rice has done worse every day for 7 years now. An intelligent person would walk away from Bush. An intelligent person would be unable to defend GWOT, and Iraq, and Iran, and Israel, and Venezuela, and Cuba, and Darfur, and all the other foreign policy nonsense that has issued from Bush and his cronies. Intelligent? No. An intelligent person examines all sides of an argument, recognises greys as well as blacks and whites, doesn't think America should rule the universe, is able to say "Oh, sorry, we were wrong on that, it was a mistake". Politicians on the other hand can simply lie, and keep talking until the question, and the audience goes away. Rice is a politician. Far more of them about than intelligent people. Except on The Watermelon Blog http://www.blognow.com.au/mrpickwick.
andrew herman:
the words were attributed to her in all versions before she was considered for Sec. of State.
It was changed from a quote to a general statement, to be assumed to be by the authors. She had several quotes but they disappeared as well.
A very near and dear acquaintance saved an early copy on his PC - went to get it after I mentioned the change - it was the only folder of info trashed on his PC?
OK,OK, nobody here likes Condi-BUT the conservative Republicans LOOOOVE her and that is a group McCain has been courting with not a hell of a lot of success what with Conservative Radio host bad mouthing mcCain he needs a little help. The talk show host love Condi too and they have a very large following of thoughtless dweebs.
yes, I can see where Rice would be a good choice, she is young, smart and can use two syllable words. I saw her answering Wexlor's questioning in Congress and while she was telling one lie after another no one but Wexlor seemed to give a shit because she can tell them like Bush (like it would be an insult to contradict her/him)
You've got to admit Rice would go over better with the American people than a third term for Dick Cheney. Wolfowitz wouldn't have much appeal either. However, I guess McCain will go one of two ways. He will either pick Mitt Romney, who had the grace to bow out right after Super Tuesday and would give the ticket geographic balance, or someone to appease Huckabee's jihadist supporters, if not Huckabee himself.
One word describes Rice DISASTER
Don't forget that Murdoch Media will not be running any anti-Repub anythings.
It will be Hillary-bashing 24/7 (I'm still holding to the nightmare of her winning due to superduperdelegates (70 of whom have not even been named yet).
Mainstream America will not get to hear any criticism of Rice or 'war hero' McInsane, especially after the inevitable foreign crises that will cascade so fast that we will hardly have time to breathe.
Attack, attack, attack will be the Repub strategy and it will be difficult to get an opposing word in.
It's still a long way till election day, and Cheney has a man-sized safe filled with evil tricks.
Don't forget, we could already have a Democratic President if only Cheney had been impeached and Bush put out to pasture (you know he wants to quit-it's the only thing he's good at).
The Doormat-ocrats only have themselves to blame, although their apologistas will continue to hurl their invective against others rather than take responsibility for their own failure.
Vote Green, for a change.
Condom-ina Rice. We think she has a marvelous pair of legs and a lovely oil tanker.
But, mummy musta been busy with the soap when she was a little girl - all those lies. My oh mye!
Condoleezza Rice is formidable in Congress and with the press because of her intimidating, arrogant and defiant manner. People back off because they don't want to get into a catfight. But she has consistently been totally wrong on the issues and lies constantly. Her cold, haughty manner may shut down politicians and journalists, but it's unlikely to appeal to voters. Her record would provide ample fodder for any opposition.
Crap, why is Hoffman trying to THINK FOR THE GOP? What a nut. Get a real job and work for the RNC chump.
Seriously, Rice is a sick, depraved rat and a war criminal. Damn her to hell. Liar, crook. Involved in the cover of up and obstruction of the investigation of 9/11. She belongs in jail.
Condi conned Stanford. Maybe that took some smarts. She is accomplished in other ways in which intelligence is an asset. To be polite, we can say she is misguided. To be honest, we can say she is evil.
Erm, hello? Rice is black. You think that would "solidify" the christer base? Only if "solidify" is a synonym for "cause to stay at home".
Condi is like a jackel.. I hear the sucking sound around her. The thought of her running as a VP, like Cheney is demonic. Someone said that running her even though she has been a part of the catastrophic policy decisions of the Bush crime family, is still a scary possibility. The people in this country are known for their "(k)nose for the truth"..they have short attention spans when it comes to history or politics. She and McCain would probably be the strongest ticket for them.. The hardcore 30%+ that still think the Iraqi's are hiding WMD, will vote for failed policies every time, as long as they yell charge.. For a minute I thought Huckabee might be a possibility (pick up the bible thumping evangelicals), but I think our comrade hit a nail..it may be in our eye or in our coffin, but Condeliar may be their best shot..like a fifty footer at midcourt ...they have nothing to lose at this point except all three branches of Gov., and I'm not real excited about our selections either. The Billary, or mo Bama. show me the money!
Na, the GOP only lets Blacks(part White) into top levels rolls of violence...Colin Powell, Condi.
They would never let "one" into the VP or P job.
Besides, much of their Red state Christian base still go to cross burnings in White pointy hats on Satuday night and are squeaky clean White for Sunday morning mass.
The author does raise some good points. Granted, Condolezza Rice is a despicable human being, one of many despicable human beings that have populated the Bush administration. But she is also articulate, quick-thinking and tough under pressure. I watched her testifying on several occasions and she is not easily rattled, nor does she fumble in the midst of a heated exchange. She could be a formidable VP candidate, providing the harder, tougher edge to the GOP ticket that seems to appeal to the Republican base.
The vision of a person like Condolezza Rice being just a myocardial infarction away from the presidency gives me the heebie jeebies.
A McCain/Rice ticket could very well beat a weak candidate like Hillary Clinton. I'm not so sure about Obama. If such a GOP ticket were to emerge, and if he continues to run his campaign as smartly as he has up to this point, my feeling is that he could hold his own.
BTW, does anyone know of whom Obama might be considering as a running mate? I haven't heard any scuttlebutt. I have heard Wesley Clark's name mentioned as a possible running mate for Hillary. If Obama does win the nomination, it will be interesting to see what direction he takes in selecting a VP.
Well, If McCain chooses Condoleezza Rice as a running mate, I guess Obama should choose Cynthia McKinney as a running mate. She is not only blacker and more of a woman, but she also will finally make it clear exactly where he stands.
If anyone thinks Condi would be an asset to the Republican ticket, they've got a few screws loose. Running the unrepentant war monger McCain alongside the moron who didn't know her job as National Security Advisor was to pay attention to such information as "Bin Laden determined to strike in US . . .," now that is a real dream team to defeat. Cosmetically, a white man and a black woman -- sounds great. But their records, their words, their actions -- they are the pairing that proves what a disaster their party has been "governing" these past eight years.
