Brattleboro to Vote on Arresting Bush, Cheney
BRATTLEBORO - Brattleboro residents will vote at town meeting on whether President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney should be indicted and arrested for war crimes, perjury or obstruction of justice if they ever step foot in Vermont.
The Brattleboro Select Board voted 3-2 Friday to put the controversial item on the Town Meeting Day warning.
According to Town Clerk Annette Cappy, organizers of the Bush-Cheney issue gathered enough signatures, and it was up to the Select Board whether Brattleboro voters would consider the issue in March.
Cappy said residents will get to vote on the matter by paper balloting March 4.
Kurt Daims, 54, of Brattleboro, the organizer of the petition drive, said Friday the debate to get the issue on the ballot was a good one. Opposition to the vote focused on whether the town had any power to endorse the matter.
"It is an advisory thing," said Daims, a retired prototype machinist and stay-at-home dad of three daughters.
So far, Vermont is the only state Bush hasn't visited since he became president in 2001.
Daims said the most grievous crime committed by Bush and Cheney was perjury - lying to Congress and U.S. citizens about the basis of a war in Iraq.
He said the latest count showed a total of 600,000 people have died in the war.
Daims also said he believed Bush and Cheney were also guilty of espionage for spying on American people and obstruction of justice, for the politically generated firings of U.S. attorneys.
Voting to put the matter on the town ballot were Chairwoman Audrey Garfield and board members Richard Garrant and Dora Boubalis.
Voting against the idea were board members Richard DeGray and Stephen Steidle.
Daims said the names submitted to the town clerk's office were the second wave of signatures the petition drive had to collect, because he had to rewrite the wording of the petition.
He said he gathered nearly 500 signatures in about three weeks, and he said most people he encountered were eager to sign it. He started the petition drive about three months ago.
"Everybody I talked to wanted Bush to go," he said, noting that even members of the local police department supported the drive.
"This is exactly what the charter envisioned as a citizen initiative," Daims said. "People want to express themselves and they want to say how they feel."
He said the idea is spreading: Activists in Louisville, Ky., are spearheading a similar drive, and he said activists were also working in Montague, Mass., a Berkshires town.
The article asked the town attorney to "draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities."
The article goes on to say the indictments would be the "law of the town of Brattleboro that the Brattleboro police ... arrest and detain George Bush and Richard Cheney in Brattleboro, if they are not duly impeached ..."
Daims said people in Brattleboro were willing to "think outside the box" and consider the issue.
Daims had no compunction in comparing Bush and Cheney with one of the most notorious people in history.
"If Hitler were still alive and walked through Brattleboro, I think the local police would arrest him for war crimes," Daims said.

Show All>We have to hope this grassroots effort will awaken others to perform similar actions and at least prevent the evil cabal from further destructive actions.
Some people just don't (or won't) get it. It's not about arresting anyone. It's about awakening sheeple. Maybe, just maybe, some people, somewhere will smell the coffee and contact their representatives. And maybe, just maybe, the House will do the necessary and begin investigations. I can dream, can't I?
***It's about awakening sheeple.***
Are these "sheeple" more inclined to be awakened by an absurdity than by real action?
See, I don't think so. I think all this does is satisfy the narcissism of a few small-minded, desperate, but well-meaning, activists. This is entirely for them, to satisfy themselves, and to show how clever and righteous they are.
But it's not well thought out, it's not actionable, and it's not defendable. The hypocrisy of advocating an illegal action (whether you plan to carry it out or not) to hold someone else legally accountable is beyond belief.
This will mean nothing to "sheeple," whoever they are.
The Brattleboro impeachment movement, with a willing population of voters at their beckon call, could have done something that had some real punch - some real consequences. Instead, they chose to act like children.

Last October people of Windham county gathered to strategize for strength against a formidable foe, Washington DC. Here in Vermont we have a congressman who is not responsive to the will of his constituents and a congress that displays an inability to restore any semblance of respect for the law or respect for real needs of American people. Faced with watching our power-broker friends in Washington make illegal decisions for the future of our country, this small group of people brainstormed and prayed for the will and the determination to stand up for the principles of democracy and the rights granted by our Constitution.
We had already proved to the world and to our congressman Peter Welsh that we knew impeachment to be an obligation of the congress given the (admitted) felonies committed by both President and the Vice President. To do so we spent many hundreds of hours collectively to create a consensus and to prove it beyond all doubt that Vermonters overwhelmingly desire accountability and impeachment . Through positive votes at town meetings asking for impeachment and special meetings convened with our congressman demanding that this State represent the rule of law and promote impeachment, through mobilizing the largest citizen gathering at the Statehouse in Montpelier with only a days notice, the Citizens of Vermont have made it amply clear to their representatives exactly how they want and expect them to act in the wake of the known crimes of the Bush administration.
We take it seriously that these elected representatives are drawing a salary on our backs, and elected to represent the will of Vermont constituents and refusing to follow it. We take the relationship of being the boss of our elected servants in DC seriously, they are supposed to be doing the will of the people and doing their best to meet the needs of ALL americans. Instead we have power-brokers in DC who are heartless and immoral in the way they neglect the health of Americans, the way they use Americans to work for the richest by creating laws rigged against the hardest working and largest measure of the populace. We don't think its right , and we don't think its fair. We don't want the rule of law and the meaning of the Constitution perverted in the way it has been in recent history. We don't want nasty corporate greed to continue to ruin the earth and the people.
At that meeting our right to be protected from the illegality of decisions made in DC, we talked about wanting a circle around our community wherein the rule of Law and the laws of the Constitution would be restored. We want protection from people who do not respect the rule of law who are in power. So in the conversation we strategized how to create a safety zone where these immoral policies would not affect us, and in that manner we hit upon the idea of protecting ourselves from George Bush and Cheney by making sure they never came near us. Thats how dangerous we feel they are. We feel these people and their invisible corporate support system are a danger to others and by definition not making sane decisions for this country.
That is how we came upon the plan to vote for the arrest for these two people if they ever come to Brattleboro. We knew immediately that we wanted to stand up for this. We envisioned the possibility of conveying to the World that doing the right thing takes the least important of people to insist upon it. Bush and Cheney may be the most important people in the world but they are only equal to each and every one of us. The next day I went out on the street and asked people if they wished Brattleboro to be a place where there was a warrant out for Bush's arrest, and the joy that this question evoked was palpable.

A point has been made about enforceability. Let's hear from other people speak on the earlier points.
Militantliberal and Phillippe wanted to know what's different about Vermont
Santafebearclaw mentioned moving to Vermont. The Brattleboro Chamber of Commerce would love to hear praise from him and everyone else. Right now the Right Wing is flooding the town offices with hate mail, both insulting and threatening. So far over 4000 e-letters. It started Monday.
Peterrb2 and Bakunin wanted to start an independent citizen's impeachment committee.
Jungleboy wanted to start started something in his town.

Mike Bin SC suggests action in Bush's home town via the Lone Star Iconoclast. Can we hear more on that idea?
I got a call -- Sunday night, I think -- from Susan Smallheer, who wrote the header article. She warned me that the story had been taken up by the Drudge Report, which is a Right Wing on-line hate machine and that we should expect a deluge of hate-mail from the visitors to that web site. The intent of the hate-e-mail campaign is to intimidate Brattleboro voters from approving the Indictment. I visited town hall yesterday and was very glad that the town officers and their assistants held no grudge against me for the hate-mail. It's not pretty, but we're holding up.

I don't suppose anyone has noted the hypocrisy of this vote: voting whether or not to violate "the rule of law" in order to 'protect' "the rule of law"?
They want to "draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution and publish said indictments for consideration by other authorities." However, those indictments would be for actions performed while holding office, therefore they would be impeachments. The Constitution gives the House the sole power of impeachment. So such indictments would amount to an attack on the very Constitution they say they're trying to protect.
What are you people, Republicans?
You all remind me of the group thats gathered outside the burning building where the child screams at the front window.. But Hey ! That's breaking and entering !
Focus on what's important. WE have got lawlessness, labyrinthian laws passed by people who DON"T EVEN READ THEM !
We have unfairness in this land, and there isn't ANYONE at the helm if its someone who cares less about your comfort and the comfort of the people of this land, or even the comfort of the people who gave their lives for this land. I mean, a real leader wouldn't take a dime for himself if he knew somebody needed it more than he. A REAL leader would make sure that people have enough to eat, have a future of prosperity, and the respect of a caring government.
Ooops... I must have stumbled into the children's chat room ... have fun, kids ... don't fight, and don't put things in your mouths
Is that why you are too much of a coward to use your own name ? Everyone knows it takes a babe to see the emperors' nakedness . What do you see ?
That's right, emily. Comfort is more important than freedom.
We have to destroy the law in order to save it.
We have to destroy society in order to save it.
We have to kill people in order to save them.
Where do we stop?
people..."What we have here is a failure to communicate"
no one is ever satisfied with their government officials. No one ever wants to admit "they" voted for the wrong person.Look at the present power in charge...somebody voted for them..look at who is running now for the next term..All i can say is i hope and pray that God does not turn his back on this country.
We need to quit bickering like children. Act like the intelligent and mature humans we are, and fix the problem.
We know that by the time anything ever gets done in our system ,he will have been out of office for years. What we need to make sure of is not to make the same mistake and put another liar or idiot into office. I wish you all well, just remember...In GOD WE TRUST...
Near Nero times again, I see. God will fix things for His chosen ones, soon, and bless those who stand on the side of righteousness. Obidiah 15 will happen.
God bless Brattleboro, VT
Responding to TwitchytheSquirrel:
It is my dearest hope that Congress should redeem itself and bring Bush to justice. I do not have faith that Congress will do it. So, realisticly I start a discussion of alternatives by proposing one controversial way of doing it. The Brattleboro measure is largely symbolic, but it would "publish said indictment for consideration by other authorities". This is unprecedented maybe, but it is not illegal or destructive of the rule of law, as TwitchytheSquirrel implies.
The idea, obviously is that the idea might appeal to people in a more powerful jurisdiction. For now I believe the most important thing is for other communities to take up an Indictment or more radical action. We here in Brattleboro aren't experts, but we're eager to help.

I was born and raise in Brattleboro went to BUHS and grad in 1976. Their problem as I see it was all those hippy pot heads that were moving into our town when I left have finished, pushing Those of us that have pride and respect for our gov. have now been over run. When returning home to find those lovely farms had been for closed on and sold to the highest bidder and put up a shopping center only for it to stand vacant. oh yeah they were bankers that were form the liberal parties I look back on my last couple weeks in Brattleboro I was riding the town bus at that time it was 35 cents to get around town there were about 3 of those outsiders talking about MY town saying how it was such a nice town but it does not have this or that. in NYC they have all this stuff or that stuff. I had become Irate how dare they move into MY home town cause the prises to go up on EVERYTHING and talk about how it was not the same as NYC. I said then go back to NYC. I left the care of my BELOVED Brattleboro and look what you have let happen FOR SHAME I married a soldier I am now living in Columbus (Ft,Benning) GA I first heard of this Brattleboro was made a joke of... you are now a JOKE to the rest of the US and many soldiers in the US Army. SHAME ON YOU
This is an interesting development indeed. In reading the comments and all the cheerleading about how "progressive' Brattleboro is, I have to question why Dr. Ron Paul did not win the state in the primaries?
Surely, if those people believe the Constitution has been defiled, then they would have voted for the ONLY candidate who eats, sleeps, and breathes the Constitution. One would think that Ron Paul would have gotten 100% of the votes in that state if the good people of Vermont were truly supporters of that great and sacred document?
If you're not familiar with him, check out his voting record as a 10 term Congressman. Check out www.RonPaul2008.com
If you people really want change and truly want our nation back, then you should support him. If he doesnt win the nomination, then write his name in on the ballot!
If you've read over the comments by ctrenta: it's easy, and perhaps informative, to understand that this gentleman's viewpoint is coming from a limited realm of history--basically, the last couple hundred years of American history. This I suppose is the typical American view, but it completely misses the point of what the Brattleboro citizens are expressing: independence. There's a much greater history in that word than in the history of 'American' law. The citizens are thinking outside the statutes of American law because the laws have become distilled to proportionally favor those in higher and higher positions (e.g. kill one person and it's murder, kill half a million and it's defending the economy); and to no wonder, one only has to look at who has reformed and refined these statutes, certainly not the majority of the population. A quick review of history reveals that the Supreme Court wasn't voted into position of 'supreme arbiter' by the people, nor was their adjudication over state court put to vote.
A slow unraveling of history is a valid way of expressing discontent; it has to start somewhere.
