Iraq: 'US the Biggest Producer of Terror'
BAQUBA -- Broken promises have brought a dramatic increase in anti-U.S. sentiment across the capital city of Iraq's Diyala province.
Many people in Baquba, capital of Diyala 40 km northeast of Baghdad, had supported U.S. forces when they ousted former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein. But failed reconstruction projects and muddled policies mean the U.S. has lost that support.
"The Americans based their strategy in Iraq on certain Shias here who have direct enmity with Sunnis and allegiance to Iran," resident Ayub Ibrahim told IPS. "This was the source of the gap between certain Shias which the U.S. backs, and certain Sunnis they back." Shias and Sunnis are different sects within Islam.
The U.S. has also alienated people through its policy of extensive detentions. Many believe that raids that lead to arrests are based on motivated information given to the U.S. military by Shia militiamen who have infiltrated the Iraqi army and police.
"We never witnessed an attempt to arrest Shia people either by the U.S. army or the Iraqi police and army," resident Abdul Sattar al-Badri told IPS. Most people see no reasonable basis for many of the arrests.
In November the International Committee of the Red Cross said that around 60,000 people are currently detained in Iraq.
"The Americans occupied our country and put our men in prisons," Dhafir al-Rubaiee, an officer from Iraq's previous army told IPS. "The majority of these prisoners have been arrested for nothing other than for being Sunni. Every one of these prisoners has a family, and these families now have reason to hate Americans."
Others blame the lack of security and the destroyed infrastructure for the increasing anti-U.S. sentiment.
"The lack of security is a direct result of the occupation," resident Abu Ali told IPS. "The Americans crossed thousands of miles to destroy our home and kill our men. They are the reason for all our disasters."
Another resident, speaking on condition of anonymity added, "We lived in need during the period of the Saddam government, but we were safe. We were compelled to work sometimes 20 hours a day to earn our living, but we were happy to see our children and relatives together." U.S. forces, he said, have ended all that.
Abu Tariq believes the U.S. military intentionally destroyed Iraq's infrastructure. "The Americans destroyed the electricity, water pumping stations, factories, bridges, highways, hospitals, schools, buildings, and opened the borders for strangers and terrorists to get easily into the country," he said.
The large number of Iraqis killed by U.S. forces has also hardly endeared the forces to the people.
"When targeted by a roadside bomb or suicide bomber, U.S. soldiers shoot at people randomly. Innocent civilians have been killed or injured," Yaser Abdul-Rahman, a 45-year-old schoolmaster told IPS. "Thousands of people have been killed like this."
The anti-U.S. sentiment in Baquba is now so high that people no longer hide their distrust of the U.S.
"At the beginning of the occupation, the people of Iraq did not realize the U.S. strategy in the area," Abu Taiseer, a member of the communist party in the city told IPS. "Their strategy is based on destruction and massacre. They do anything to have their agenda fulfilled.
"Now, Iraqis know that behind the U.S. smile is hatred and violence," Taiseer added. "They call others violent and terrorists, but what they are doing in Iraq and in other countries is the origin and essence of terror. America is the biggest producer of terror, and they spend huge funds for creating and training death squads all over the world."
Despite the differing U.S. ways of dealing with Shias and Sunnis, the two sects seem one in their hatred of the U.S.
"Look at our country, it will need 30 years to get back again," Edan Barham told IPS. "This has nothing to do with sects; all of us are Iraqis, and we should think of Iraq in a better way than sectarian lines."
"People of Iraq of all sects now realize that it is the occupation represented by the Americans that has damaged the country," resident Khalil Ibrahim said.
Political analyst Azhar al-Teengane says the only Iraqis who support the occupation are those benefiting directly from it.
"The occupation is good for politicians who have made money, militiamen, contractors and opportunists," Teengane said. "These form not more than 5 percent of Iraqi people."
Self-rule could help lower anti-U.S. sentiment, said resident Jalal al-Taee. "In order to improve the situation, the U.S. army should let the people of this city run it."

Show AllHopefully the mutual hatred of American forces that have invaded their country and killed their people will continue to unite all of the various factions, and Iraq may be able to eventually regain its stature as one of the oldest civilizations in the world. Iraq also deserves to receive reparations from the United States for all of this death and destruction. Not to mention, of course, a trial of American and British war criminals.
God works in mysterious ways! Iraqis will rebuild themselves on the common notion of anti-Americanism. Many Canadians identify themselves not with common identity traits, but as being non-American. We do not glorify guns and violence, we are more tolerant of minorities- be they racial, sexual, or linguistic, and we have better beer. Iraqis, as they find and nurture a common hatred of Americans, will realize that they are better off in the same tent by themselves than they presently are with uncle Sam holding a gun to their heads.
The US has succeeded in making itself hated. I personally, even as an American, want the Iraqis to win and rebuild their country and heal from the disaster the US has created. We couldn't take the destruction of three buildings and one day of attacks, and the Iraqis have lived under attack for years.
I feel sorry for them and apologise to everyone of them that I meet.
This terror is like what the beautiful people in Laos and Cambodia, Vietnam and Afghanistan are experiencing. How about supporting an invasion of Somalia the occupation of haiti and so on. Don't American people realise their past was based on genocidal policies of native peoples and that they elect governments that are now becoming irredeemibly despised by th eminute.
Worse the very idea of supporting the State of Israel with its genodical policies against Palestinians, their invasions of neighbouring countries, assinations, terror, arms exports, torture, theft, destruction, racism and a plethora of other crimes is an abomination to mankind and all God's children everywhere. In your name!!! Yugoslavia, Haiti and now Somalia.........!
Present belligerence against Iran when your little sister in crime Israel laughs her racist self silly at you, despises you for swallowing the mythology , and is light years ahead of any other threat with nuclear weapony.
It alone is more powerful militarily than any other country in NATO, save you know who, has bigger armaments exports than any other, save the same, commits enormous crimes with your full diplomatic military and financial support while it spies on you, robs you blind and exports terorists, their trainers, mercenaries and bloody minded thugs all across the entire planet. Dual nationality you know??? Two three passports, backed by bankers and their media stooges, who rob, deceive, lie, cheat and give their Jewish brethern who are not Zionists a terrible predicament to be faced in the future.
Hear this I implore you all "Do not support your troops". Gather support and oppose their actions abroad. Let them know you don't support them. Cry it loud organise, write, protest, withdraw taxes, target war profiteering companies, call aloud for a boycott Israel and get through to the Pentagons' walls. That just might put the fear of revolt back on stage. Let them know in those far off lands that 'you the people' do not want your military to engage in illegal warfare and something might happen. Are you all too afraid of the consequences? You,the United States peoples owe it to the peoples of Iraq, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Haiti, Palestine and on and on. You have a duty to stop your military and to do it soon. As long as you support your troops and Israel you become complicit in Government policy. Please get mad as hell and let the system quake! Many of us are with you and we'd rally worldwide. Europe is just as bad in this regard for the inertia of its citizens and the disgraceful policies of its political leadership in allowing this. NATO must be disbanded not strengthened in any way but dismantled forthwith. How? You true North Americans lead Canada too and we each nations' peoples in the european union will shake our leaders here like holy shit! Geronimo!
Lbanus is right. We Americans are responsible for death and misery all over the planet. I'm just surprised that more people don't hate us. How does it happen that it isn't 100% disapproval of America in Iraq?
We need to come up with an effective way to slow the gears of the war machine. Any ideas?
We have a depleted uranium weapons plant near me. How do you explain to people who can't get any other job that their job is immoral? Especially to the hateful people in this Bible belt who believe that all Muslims should be killed.
"Especially to the hateful people in this Bible belt who believe that all Muslims should be killed."
Expose 9/11 and the "War on Terror" Frauds.

Native-Americans know about broken promises and treaties and the theft of their resources/land, so they have a lot in common with the suffering Iraqis. The U.S., unfortunately, is not a country to be proud of.
The poor Iraqis, who through their culture and religon, show hospitality to all until repeatedly snubed, still don't seem to understand the deep racism that informs the imperialist US.
The US regards anyone who doesn't look like a northern European or Russian as subhuman; untermenschen. they can therby exploit, double-cross, abuse, torture and ultimately kill anyone with the least bit of melanin in their skin and sleep quite well at night.
I think it is important to understand that there is absolutely nothing innately human about the peculiar, broad-spectrum racism that always seems to accompany US, and before them British and European, capitalist imperialism. The two go hand in hand - one complimenting the other perfectly.
Quite the protection racket. We invade, occupy, divide and terrorize the population and now we want an agreement to "protect" Iraq far into the future. Bush and Maliki intend to do this without the participation of Iraq's parliament or the U.S. congress (should that spineless, corrupt body offer any resistance) and certainly not with the consent of the governed in either country. It seems way too many Americans have fallen for the protection racket after 911 so now I just hope every day the Iraqis will continue to reunite and take away our excuse to stay and "protect" them.
'Abu Tariq believes the U.S. military intentionally destroyed Iraq's infrastructure. "The Americans destroyed the electricity, water pumping stations, factories, bridges, highways, hospitals, schools, buildings, and opened the borders for strangers and terrorists to get easily into the country," he said.'
Abu Tariq is quite right. Read Naomi Klein's *The Shock Doctrine*.
Look around you, northernally; what you're saying is fast becoming a myth. Canada is rapidly changing. The fact that the polls say we're gonna re-elect that theo-con "President" Harpo should tell you where Canadians heads are these days. We love to criticize Americans for clinging to their fantastical nationalist mythology, don't let's fall into the trap of imitating them in this as well.
U.S. leaders deserve no respect whatsoever. They're a ruthless, contemptible bunch of fascist thugs in expensive business suits paid for by us taxpayers.
What a joke -- now the thugs want to "protect" the Iraqis after slaughtering so many of them. What they really want to protect is Iraq's oil for their greedy selves.
The U.S. glorifies violence, war, crime, sexual exploitation, sadism -- you name it. No wonder movies like "American Gangster" are popular.
With what we have done as a country makes me hang my head in shame. I really do not like being a US citizen anymore. Yesterday, we killed a bunch of Afghani police (in error, they say) thinking they were talibans. Our soldiers, be they US or mercenariess have no regard for human life except for thei owwn. We need to get the troops out of all countries and bring them home to be re-educated in what a civilized country is about. We cannot use the US or Great Britain as examples. This country is based upon genocide.

I hate to say this but the time is coming when both the USA and us, in the UK are going to pay a bitter price for all the horror we have inflicted on others in the name of both "Freedom" and "Democracy". Orwellian Newspeak if ever there was!
We are not sanctified against the just desire for revenge from all those on whom we have inflicted the sword. But we are in peril both from the corrupt and evil of our own leaders and the gathering storm from our external enemies.
So blind, that Bush. And perverse.
"US the biggest producer of terror"
Is there any doubt in this, when the evidence is so overwhelming?

When bush is out of office he should go on a "healing and reconciliation" tour of Iraq, because apparently he sees something most of the rest of us cannot. He can then explain why Iraqis should love Americans, and how a permanent foreign occupation of their country is good for them. He should explain how Americans will never leave them in their "time of need", and that their first and foremost "need" is permanent U.S. military bases on their soil. And he should take a stroll (on his own) into the countryside, in order to get to know the grateful Iraqis a little better.
To Lbanus !!!! you couldn't be more right !!!! We Americans should form organizations to expose what our government has done accross this world throught the CIA and the Corporate/Military Machine, our government under the name of Spreading peace, has actually been behind hundreds of civil wars, that have caused millions to die, it is behind and even started the AlQuida, and has used the profits of the POPPY industry (note how it has grown in production in the last few years, do we hear anything against it here in our media? very very seldom) to spread more terror, The CIA created this mess over there, specificly for us to go over and control the areas oil for our benefit, not so much the publics here in the US as it is for the Corporations. When you start reading on the net from private media who have researched these acts of the CIA and our Government it is more evil than I can even imagine, and it is all for power and world superiority, the Neocon study group (Wolfowitz and company)took over the our Government, they were able to steel two elections. Read the truth from this site, from globalresearch.com, read from prisonplanet.tv, portland.indymedia.org, Konformist.com. Facts are that there is very very strong evidence that 9-11 was either allowed to happen or planned and executed by the CIA, our government via the neocons, read Bogusstory.com/911_inside_job.html Notice our media does not print any of these facts as they are exposed, they have been approached, and have heard of these sites, and of the 27 ex generals and pilots who have banded together for trueth and put their reputations on the line, even posted their pictures, but yet no major media has even once written an article about this. WE ARE IN DEEEEEP !!!! SHITE !!!!!!!!!! We are probably even being monitored for writing these things !!! WELCOME TO THEIR "NEW AMERICAN CENTURY" OF WORLD DOMINANCE !!!! THIS IS A TRAVESTY !!! TERRIBLE !!!
I have nothing to add to this thread other than I am ashamed to be an American.
With history to guide us we could have known that the occupation would be unpopular, expensive, counter productive, destructive and really stupid.
How the hell can they take care of Iraqies when they can take care of the US people?
Would I be exaggerating if I said that the U.S. is the world's serial killer?
What an ugly country, and an ugly people. They cannot see themselves. But the mirror of history will brand them forever for what they are. The United States of Torture, Sadness and Death.
"Look at our country, it will need 30 years to get back again."
"The occupation is good for politicians who have made money, militiamen, contractors, and opportunists."
They are talking about Iraq, but they could just as easily be talking about Bush's affect on America.
God bless America! I'm sure God would like to if only America didn't stand for everything he hates!
I feel sorry when people hate Americans due to Bush's jingoism in the world. Why can't the Americans focus at the forces responsible for causing mayhem the world over? It is Israel and its lobby, AIPAC, stupid!
surfer,
The United States of America has a vast and deep history of genocide, slavery, white supremacy and imperialism. You must be able to see that this vast and deep history is not just a product of "Bush's jingoism" or "Israel and its lobby, AIPAC".
Not that Bush is not a problem, or that US support for the state of Israel is not a problem. But clearly, the people who founded the USA, and the people who led this country through most of our crimes against humanity, were not led by the Bush Crime Family or Zionists.
The USA has vaster and deeper problems than Bush or AIPAC. Neither history, nor current events, are reducible to such a simplistic analysis.
I will always support 17 year olds that have been 'recruited' by promises of money, education and 'travel', many come from impoverished areas and look at it as their ticket out of he hell they live each day. The way those that haven't any children, have never done without, or are simply so self rightous haven't a clue. OH CANADA.. you are as bad now, try not to bath in grandiose thoughts of what Canada once was, and lay blame on yourselves and your leaders. As Americans we accept that our administration is a Treasonous blight on the world now and are working hard to change it.
I am so weary of those, those that I know are white saying repeatedly that there would be no harm done if the persons being murdered and their countries descimated if they were a few shades lighter. My daughters, one Cuban, the other Turkish Muslim both are ethnic in their appearance but light skinned yet both have been traumatized throughout their lives, one due to religion and assumptions that Turks are Arabs, they aren't, and the other because as soon as you hear her name you know she is Latina. It has to do with the generalizations and preconceptions of if you are________ then you are____________.
bush et al are to have their heads hung in shame. I feel shamed, but many of the things people say are not applicable to every American, my house is one of many sights and sounds, it is how my parents raised me and it is in turn how I raised my children. I know I spend many a night without sleep trying to work with many to find a way, any way to rid ourelves of this disease that infected our country.
can it really be happening in front of our very eyes, that the darkest period in human history is being played out. with by far the greater majority of the human population beyond race or creed knowing what is right and wrong hate or love. this is the time for the people not the politicians. all war now is genocide, one death of one innocent is totally unexceptable.
We are all connected it is more obvious then it ever has been, my fellow humans in all nations pain is my pain. we have been asleep and now we awaken, this is not just America this is the evolotion of the ego through all time becoming 'Civilised' Greeks, Romans, Spanish, Germans, English, America the last great empire, the final rediculas demonstration of mans fear of love and control over death.
i love my children and so all children the illusion of separation is breaking down and the ego does not like it.
this is our time, the time of the masses that know simply that love was the only god there ever was.
I left the US and moved to France after 9/11 considering myself as a new class of refugee - I feel exactly today like the Jews who left Germany... just in time! Amerika has nothing to offer anymore - except death camps and ignorance.
It's true that the ones doing most of the terrorism in the world are sponsored by the US government. They have thoroughly terrorized Iraq and Afghanistan. The awareness is spreading so what is their response. It is to tighten security and spy on us the citizens. They know what they are doing is illegal so they are just making sure us citizens can't do anything about it. If you don't go along with their insane imperialist agenda you will be a labled a terrorist.
"Abu Tariq believes the U.S. military intentionally destroyed Iraq's infrastructure."- -
Where could he possibly get that idea? See? There's just no reasoning with these Islamofascists.
"We need to come up with an effective way to slow the gears of the war machine. Any ideas?"
Greenerthanthou, the change to an anti-war ideology must take place in America's Churches. Those who preach from the pulpit must be placed in the crucible and emerge strong and clear in their responsibilities to peace.
Didnt we alreay know that the Americans are the real "terrorists" in Iraq, wasting tax money, killing innocents and jus tplain messing things up in their peacekeeping efforts like everything else they do.
Iraq does need some help like most of the middle eastern countries where they are ruled by religion (but so is america).
Religion as Richard Dawkins has truly stated is the root of all evil, especially when it involes crushing a young boys arm with a car for stealing a loaf of bread
Why is it that wherever the US goes, shit is sure to follow?
Doom n Gloom, thank you for your thoughts. It is worth repeating: "the change to an anti-war ideology must take place in America's Churches. Those who preach from the pulpit must be placed in the crucible and emerge strong and clear in their responsibilities to peace".
To believers and those who do not believe, the fact remains: Right or wrong, our churches are the last bastions of communities in America. All CD readers should appreciate that churches CAN be powerful forces when they are spiritually transformational. But in most cases though, our churches have become more of a belonging system rather than a transformational system.
What has happened over the past 50 years is that the vast majority of the Christian faithful in America has been seduced by the false idolatry of personal success, seduced by the false idolatry of American exceptioalism, seduced by the false idolatry of individualism over community, seduced by the intrinsic evil of corporate consumer capitalism and seduced by a right or wrong mentality that chooses revenge and war over wisdom. What has happened in America is that one's religious faith has become so personal that it has become out of touch with the radical counter cultural teachings of Christ.
BUT there are true signs of an emerging counter cultural awareness, an ant-war movement as found in Pax Christi USA and the fast growing transformational program called JustFaith in hundreds of parishes across the U.S.
Also there is Rev Jim Wallis of Sojourners who represents much of mainstream Protestism and increasing numbers of evangelicals. Sojourner's Call to Renewal program is in strong solidarity with other movements of similar counter cultural anti-war viewpoints.
So is there great solidarity with Rabbi Michael Lerner of the Tikkun community in SF, with his founding of the religious and non-religious movement called The Spiritual Progressives.
So there is truly more than hope within American churches for a more genuine counter-culrural and anti-war movement.
