Dear W: Take a Hint From Nixon
Happy Anniversary! Let's celebrate our anniversary the way so many do: by renewing our vows. Today is the 23rd of January: 35 years after President Richard Nixon vowed to withdraw all U.S. troops from combat within 60 days. And though he was off a little, he kept his word. The last soldier left Vietnam on the 29th of March, just six days later than promised.
If you are old enough you may remember Richard Nixon's 1973 speech in which he announced simultaneously in both Washington and Hanoi that he would end one of the great blunders of the 20th century.
He never once spoke of the ignominy of sacrificing 58,226 U.S. soldiers in a losing proposition. Nixon never mentioned the unnecessary slaughter of hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of Vietnamese. He never pointed out that we had engaged in a bloody, violent and useless waste of human, technical and natural resources - but still failed to bring a Third World nation to its knees.
No, in this famous speech that has its anniversary today, Richard Nixon never mentioned failure. He mentioned only honor.
"At 12:30 Paris time today, January 23, 1973, the Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam was initialed by Dr. Henry Kissinger on behalf of the United States. ... Throughout the years of negotiations, we have insisted on peace with honor."
Why did he do this?
Why? Well, the American people were sick of the Vietnam War. The majority of Americans wanted the war to end. The American people knew that the words he used didn't matter - even if he insisted on saving face by calling the immediate withdrawal of troops "peace with honor" - because we knew that when it all was said and done, this country had for 10 years been fighting a war without honor.
There is no honor in killing without purpose. There is no honor in maintaining hostilities because you lack the guts and gumption to withdraw. Like a child who hides the shards of the broken cookie jar, there is no honor in pretending you didn't break it. But there is even less honor in continuing to break things to make it look like the cookie jar likewise had to be broken.
Richard Nixon had words of encouragement for the South Vietnamese he left behind as he pledged to extricate the U.S. from Vietnam. "By your courage, by your sacrifice, you have won the precious right to determine your own future and you have developed the strength to defend that right. We look forward to working with you in future, friends in peace as we have been allies in war."
Ever wonder why some folks dislike us?
It's rather self-righteous that the president of any country should tell another people that they have won the right to determine their own future.
But this arrogant comment was just another face-saving gesture to replace the words that should have been said. Words such as: "We thought we could make decisions for you and get what we wanted from your country and in your part of the world. We were wrong and now we're going to leave you to whatever fate may hold. Too bad we didn't have a crystal ball. We could have saved many wasted lives. Next time we'll know better. We'll learn that it's more useful to invade a country that has lots of oil instead of lots of shrimp. But anyway, good luck!"
Ful-scale war broke out again between North and South Vietnam in 1975.
Eventually the two sides resolved their conflict and the first elections to a National Assembly were held in 1976. The nation has been united ever since. In fact according to the CIA World Fact Book, Eurostat and The Economist Intelligence Unit, Vietnam's current gross domestic product growth rate is two and a half times that of the U.S.
I can only recommend that we leave more countries alone.
And for those nations we haven't left alone: I have more of Richard Nixon's famous "Peace with Honor" speech, "The important thing was not to talk about peace, but to get peace."
Let's renew that vow. Stop just talking about peace and withdraw our troops from Iraq within 60 days.

Show AllPat- great article!
Go Green Party! www.GP.org
Bush needs to take another hint from Nixon, and RESIGN!!
It's also self-righteous to congratulate another country on their purple fingered ascent to democracy, and then give them "benchmarks" to meet before the Democrats and Republicans will stop funding troops to kill them.
Go Greens! Cynthia McKinney for President!
The election's already over and Daddy Chicken won. He has won every election since 1980. Cock-A-Doodle-Do.
Ya, end the war, resign, and leave some good evidence un-erased.
George Bush is nothing but shit with skin on it.....
And don't forget to take Dick Cheney with you.
They say that in Nixon's final days in the White House in 1974, the disgraced soon-to-be-ex-president roamed the hallways at night, talking to portraits of dead presidents. Bush thinks God told him to invade Iraq.
Why is it that when David Berkowicz hears voices in his head, he's crazy, but when it's Bush, he's communing with God? Astronauts are required to submit to an entire battery of psychological tests to fly on a space shuttle. How is it that the men with their fingers on the nuclear button are not?
"I don't think the whole of Southeast Asia, as related to the present and future safety and freedom of the people of this country, is worth the life or limb of a single American [and] I believe that if we had and would keep our dirty bloody dollar crooked fingers out of the business of these nations so full of depressed exploited people, they will arrive at a solution of their own design and want, that they fight and work for. And if, unfortunately, their revolution must be of the violent type…at least what they get will be their own and not the American style, which they don't want…crammed down their throat."

Plus ca change . . .
I thought the article's title was going to expect Bush to DO what Nixon did and voluntarily (sort of) resign...
JOY: Good posting! Wish we could send these neocons into orbit, en route to Mars would be apropos!
Vietnam didn't have a huge amount of oil like Iraq does. This is why we are still there after five years.
Yes, this is good. Like another person posting a comment here, I thought from the title, though, the writer was going to exhort Boy George to resign. He wouldn't though.....too pig-headed.
One disagreement with what Pat LaMarche wrote: "Full-scale war broke out again between North and South Vietnam in 1975. Eventually the two sides resolved their conflict..." North and South Viet Nam did not "resolve" their conflict. The North Vietnamese army invaded the South, destroyed the South Vietnamese army and captured Saigon. In other words, the war in South-East Asia was resolved in the same way Gen. Lee and Gen. Grant resolved their conflict.
Other than that, great piece!
Our evil has traveled full circle to confront us. We are beginning to receive what we have given. The voices of morality and reason were heard in America but ignored. Evil is settling over America now like a dark age. You will soon face the tyranny of the darkness.
"Astronauts are required to submit to an entire battery of psychological tests to fly on a space shuttle. How is it that the men with their fingers on the nuclear button are not?"
--because their parent's are so wealthy that they are "waived" from the psychological tests and are fast-tracked to wherever they want to go.
The American people are caught in a monkey trap. Will they let go of Iraq? Of course not! There's a long way to go. The next President will not bring the troops home, he -she will reposition them to try and keep Iraq. This is what most Americans want. President McClinbamabee will deliver as expected.
Dear W: Take a hint from all those fake movie Westerns...it's time to ride off into the sunset.
Paraguay must be nice this time of year. No phones... No news... No reporters... Wide open spaces... Good horses probably.... How can you resist?
I know I couldn't.
In that speech Nixon refers to a ten year involvement in Vietnam when in fact America had been in Vietnam, meddling in Vietnamese politics since the French were ousted in the mid-50's. Failing to acknowledge that America's commitment to its blunders in Southeast Asia had its roots in the collective psychosis of the commie witch hunts of the 1950's has probably led to the current psychosis which has us mired in Iraq, Afghanistan and no doubt soon will have us wreaking havoc on Iran.
Actually this article presents an amazing and intriguing (and probably not intended)proposition.
If history more exactly repeated itself, Dubya would retire to the Crawford ranch and drink himself to death within four years of doing so (like LBJ).
His Democratric successor (most probably either Hillary or Barack O) would then try for four more years to keep the war going all the while blathering on about "peace with honor" and win reelection using every dirty trick in the book.
Their corporate patrons and handlers would finally get tired of the whole pointless proposition and tell them to really end the thing this time. Over the internet, evidence of their corruption would flourish finally resulting in a threat from the Republican Fascist Congress to either resign or get impeached.
A likable, insipid, and totally uninspiring successor would assume the presidency (my money would be on either Bill Richardson or Chris Dodd). Circle complete!
No doubt Bush will ride off into the sunset with his tiny pecs pumped out and his cowboy hit dipping over his bloodshot eyes and sipping whiskey from his canteen. One thing we can say about the "Uniter" is that he did indeed unite the country against him.
Yeah, and look what happened to him, the Nixon Coup (he also threatened the CIA and the military was aghast with his Soviet and China initiatives).
JFK wanted to withdraw from Vietnam, and look what happened to him. Of course, JFK pissed off so many people so many ways (Military, anti - Castro Cubans, Israel, Mafia, CIA, Bankers/Fed - all of whom had interlocking interests).
Basically, our bankers want war in one form or another, they control our currency and economy, and it may well be that Bush is just a puppet. A mean vicous one who probably supports everything done in his name, but who would probably be taking a risk by stopping the war/occupation. With Cheney as VP, we do not want Bush to do anything rash.
It's all very well getting rid of Bush and Cheney, plus a few others, but how deep does the problem go. Is it like a teenager removing one zit from his face, only to see two more appear. There are always other very strong, devious minds in the background - the huge lobby groups, such as AIPAC, big business, the media. These organisations are not going to collapse like a pack of cards, just because you remove the Ace of Spades.
All of the major candidates in your election - Clinton, Obama, McCain, Edwards etc. are all backed to the hilt by big money. They all have similar interests to the Bush administration, they want the US to be the major force in the World.
MiMi is quite correct about JFK, he concentrated on so many areas, and pissed off so many people, that it was almost inevitable that he was taken out. The same happened to Martin Luther King, he was up there with Ghandi and Nelson Mandela, but preached the right things at the wrong time.
The way in which the Democrats (and Nancy Pelosi), have caved in on important issues, just proves that they are all eating from the same bowl, and that they no longer represent the views of the people who elect them. This is not a cheap criticism of the US, but a reality of politics in general, and something which has been happening in the UK for decades.
Dubya. Admit you were wrong. Admit you lied. Put someone in charge who may actually want peace. Get the *(&%@#! outa here. Bye. Wish you were never there.
Expecting Bu$h the inferior to repent and sin no more is expecting a miracle. He would need to expose Shotgun Dick and all his contributors and supporters crimes. He would need to then confess his own crimes, accept the resignation of all his political appointees, resign, and turn himself over to the authorities.
This moral train wreck can't admit ANY mistake of consequence. He hasn't even completely admitted his alcoholism and other substance abuse.
Americans think war is something you have to do periodically, like cleaning the basement.
My understanding of what happened in Vietnam has been altered by viewing the Pinky Show's segment titled "The American War: the U.S. in Vietnam". Just google it. If you're not familiar with what The Pinky Show does, it is deceptively simple. You may at first think that it's a kid's cartoon show, but it's not.
I learned a lot, and I confess that was alive through it all. There was a lot happening in the U.S. at the time. Some of you will remember the national guard's shooting of Kent State students.
I think if the Iraq War had anything to do with our national security it would probably be worth the effort to continue! But, we all know it isn't. They never were a threat to us. Only a fool will tell themselves our security is dependent upon staying in Iraq. We aren't doing a thing for the terrorism problem. We aren't keeping them over there so they won't come over here. Those were only catchy slogan's someone came up with to keep the ignorant from figuring out what they are deliberately continuing a unnecessary war. I would imagine the terrorist's are all ready here. After all it isn't difficult to get across our border's, get through a port or even come through an airport undetected. So considering all the above. The only logical thing for Bush to do is the same thing Nixon did. Resign and let some competent person take over.
Pat, You make me proud to be a Maine-ah! Thanks,Bob
Dear W,
Take a hint from the Duvaliers
"On December 26, President Bush signed the Chimp Haven is Home Act into law. The Act, amends the CHIMP Act of 2000 to ensure that chimpanzees retired into the federal chimpanzee sanctuary system will be given permanent protection"
Yup, this is for real...
You are wasting your time sending anything to W given his unfortunate birth defects and other afflictions.
His ears stopped functioning long ago, possibly from alcohol abuse and rampant cronyism. His eyes certainly have no peripheral vision, especially when he is focusing on his current misperceptions. His nose is incapable of detecting stench. Plus whatever conscience he may have had either arrived stillborn or has long since metastasized into a sociopathology.
