Ending A Journey: Walk For Impeachment Reaches Goal, But Fight Not Over
WASHINGTON - John Nirenberg took his last step in a 40-day walk Saturday. But he described it as his first - vowing in his characteristic quietness to push forward with the promotion of impeachment.
He and about 14 supporters embarked on the final leg of a 480-mile walk between Boston and Washington Saturday morning, dodging roadside debris and swinging wide around several sidewalk sleepers during the 4.7-mile route to the National Archives - home to the Constitution.
Nirenberg, a 60-year-old professor at Marlboro College, chose his last step alone, in a grassy strip across Constitution Avenue from the pillars and white steps of the Archives.
"This is where it all began," he said quietly to a nearby supporter before pausing, then added, "Or ended."
That comment, expressing concern for the country's founding document, illustrates his motivation to trudge along the shoulder of U.S. Route 1 in a trek that started Dec. 1 in icy New England. He said his conscience was "really screaming out."
"It's somewhat in disbelief I stand here in Washington," Nirenberg told the group, which had grown to about 40 people. "But it's not enough."
"Don't think it's over now," he urged them. "A new phase has begun."
Nirenberg arrived in Washington several days before lawmakers are due to return from a three-week holiday break. He plans to rest a sore ankle and right foot, drink some beer and then deliver a packet of petitions, letters and photographs to the Capitol office of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
He hopes the walk will persuade Pelosi and other lawmakers to meet with him in person.
Joining Nirenberg for hundreds of miles was Frank Enneking, 72, who remembers leaping from a narrow roadside onto a chain link fence for protection from speeding cars.
A long, shoulderless bridge across the Susquehanna River was the only stretch of the trip Nirenberg did not walk, Enneking said, climbing instead into the car of a third companion who traveled nearby during periods of the trip.
At first, it seemed like the last leg on Saturday might not draw much attention.
Jack MacConnell, a 70-year-old astronomer on the team operating the Hubble space telescope, was the first one to arrive at the National Arboretum, the kickoff point. He read about Nirenberg's walk on a political Web site and wondered where the nation's activists were.
"There's got to be more people," he said in the empty parking lot. "I thought I'd be lost in a sea of hundreds."
People slowly dripped in - from San Francisco, New Mexico, Ohio and elsewhere.
Jamilla El-Shafei of Kennebunkport, Maine, calls herself the "Chief of Peace," and distributes cards with an emblem resembling a police badge.
"There are a bunch of other people who will be here," she said before the final walk, then remembered, "Oh, they're in jail."
The potential marchers were arrested Friday while protesting the American prison camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on the steps of the Supreme Court.
Those who did arrive were drawn to Nirenberg. He's tall with a bushy mustache and walked evenly and quietly as the crowd grew when it reached the city's downtown. Whistles began blowing around him, a man kept rhythm with a drum, activists sought him out for political discussion.
Maggie Hagen, a retired teacher and ex-nun from Cleveland, drove five hours to make the walk. She saw a video of Nirenberg of his Web site and was drawn to him. She flew to Boston to see him start the journey.
"Oh my god, this man speaks my language," she said while crossing a bridge over a hardscrabble set of railroad tracks. "He speaks for me." "It is disappointing," Hagen added. "We need thousands here."
As the group moved toward the cluttered sidewalks of the National Mall, some opponents made remarks about their signs or yellow ponchos with impeachment slogans.
One motorist yelled: "Oh, poor babies!" Another angrily hollered anti-gay slurs. Supportive honks and waves, however, eclipsed the criticisms.
Passing by a CNN office building, Nirenberg estimated that a half-million cars saw him walking along the highway. Although national news outlets took no note of his walk, he nevertheless sees a chance for his message to get through.
"I wonder how many conversations it started," he said, moments before a passing man offered a thumbs up.
"The conscience just feels like it's been exercised," Nirenberg added. "But it's not over. We reached Washington, but it's not over."

Show AllJN's absolutely right to warn people: "Don't think it's over now,"
We optimistically assume that this is the last year of the Bush regime, but if the bastards invade Iran, they can cancel the elections and keep Bush in, because of "national security reasons".
I enthusiastically applaud John Nirenberg and am among his greatest supporters. But again what is telling is the low turnout of supporters. Where are the people? I think what John is doing is admirable. But I think we are going to have to enter a steep recession or depression to get other members of the public actively involved in taking back this country. When the economic pain hits the pocketbook, then maybe we will see even more supporters surrounding John. In the meantime, good luck, John! You are a true source of inspiration!
you go, jn! please let members of the judiciary committee decide to hold impeachment hearings!
YAAYY! John had a physical problem in New Jersey and I was wondering if he'd make it.
I walked for most of a day with John. I'm too busy to drive to DC and back, but would have loved to walk on the final stretch.
JN did what must be done when the government mechanisms fail--i.e. the failure of Pelosi, Conyers, and the Judiciary Committee. What can the people do if the govt itself becomes either inept or sold out? There needs to be a mechanism for citizens investigations operating outside government agencies. Not all of us can demonstrate and walk hundreds of miles.
At least we can support Wexler--sign up

I just got back from helping Cindy Sheehan deliver 10,000 letters to Nancy Pelosi demanding that she initiate impeachment proceedings against Bush and Cheney.
The voters of San Francisco, including the majority of Nancy Pelosi's district, voted in 2006 for a ballot measure calling for impeachment. The last paragraph reads:
"We generally call on our elected federal and state representatives to immediately invoke every available legal mechanism to effect the impeachment and removal from office of President George W. Bush and Vice President Richard B. Cheney for High Crimes and Misdemeanors under Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution of the United States of America."
By taking impeachment "off the table," Nancy Pelosi has defied the express will of her own constituents.
Good luck to John Nirenberg as he pursues Nancy Pelosi.
Good luck to Dennis Kucinich as he enters the debate in Nevada.
It looks to a cynical, jaded nation as if these men are simply tilting at windmills. But this is what selflessness looks like. We need more of it.
From the article above the most curious thing to me was the passing motorist who felt it necessary to shout homophobic slurs at the peace activists. So I guess killing proves you're not gay; the lust for war is the flip side of homophobia.
Cindy Delivers!
Thanks John for Walking the Walk...
Not only should Cheney & Bush be impeached. A bus should pull up to the White House and arrest everybody except the
household staff and lead them out in handcuffs. Wonder if
MSM would cover that?
I joined the group in Phila at the Constitution Center, supporting John. I figured that if he could do all that, the least I could do was get down there to greet and support him.
i'm a canadian and i made a $$ donation to this man's cause. this is what we need to see more of in amerika. thank you, john.
with sincerest best wishes
dave
The people who should be there are working double shifts for small pay or dodging IEDs in Iraq. They are doing frivolous stuff like trying to live in the downward spiral started in the 70s and dramatically accelerated by Bu$h the inferior's party and financial supporters.
Where are the people who swore an oath to serve as Representatives and protect the Constitution from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC?????
Thank you to John Nirenberg. I, too, want to know where are the thousands who live in the D.C. area who support impeachment? Are they all so fearful of Homeland Security? We out here in small towns on the west coast wonder what it will take for the folks in the eastern cities to show up in Washington and speak up on behalf of us all. I've made more than one trip to D.C. to speak out but am always amazed at the number of local folks who just don't seem to care....
We are losing/have lost our Constitution and it seems that few even notice!
****************BREAKING**************
Kucinich won the lawsuit!!! Judge ordered that Kucinich was to debate on NBC in Nevada tomorrow or debate would be canceled!!! WAHOOOOO...
Thank You John Nirenberg. You are the new "David That Slayed Goliath". Your effort must galvanize the true Patriots in America.
The innitiators of the present world conditions must be held accountable. Impeachment and complete House cleaning must become the order of the day.
Thank You John Nirenberg!
Thats the best freaking news I've heard in some time Rebel Farmer. Thanks for the heads up! Now mabybe more people can hear whats making the ones who silence Dennis, afraid! If they let him speak. Thy're so scared NBC might just cancel. Thanks Texrey
I am just writing to share the glee over DK's inclusion in the debate. For once (and only this once) the system worked on the side of democracy and the people. Let's hope it sets a precedent for future debates and issues relating to media coverage and democracy. I am so excited. He is such a hero. Most people have no idea what is going on behind the scenes of this mostly phony election cycle. DK is fighting the real battle, between the corporate media and democracy, while the others swing their swords at the air, blowing empty rhetorical air bubbles.
That is good news, but how much television time will NBC give him? Remember how NBC gave Kucinich and Gravel little television time and primarily focused on Clinton, Obama, and Edwards? Also what if the moderator tries to interrupt so DK cannot get his message out? I do not mean to be a wet blanket, but there are lots of tricks the media can use to marginalize him.
Claudius: I'm not sure what the foremat of this debate will be. I do know that even when the MSM doesn't give DK much time, he still wins in the polls afterwards. I think DK just wants to launch a debate about impeachment. We'll see......
Rebel Farmer,
I too hope that DK hits a home run. I just hope that enough people will listen to him. Thanks for the update.
Also, if you want to help DK in Michigan, I just got this notice from his campaign:
HELP DENNIS WIN VOTES IN MICHIGAN
Dear Friend,
Michigan can make a big difference to this campaign. We need to get our people to the polls on Tuesday and you can help, no matter where you live.
We are asking supporters to call a small list of Michigan voters and urge them to get out and vote for Dennis. If you already have an account, please log in. If you are new to this effort, just go to:
www.call4dennis.com
and register at the bottom of the page. A script and instructions will be provided.
There are only three active candidates on the Democratic primary ballot - Dennis Kucinich, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Mike Gravel. So please do your best to convince people that a vote for Dennis is a real vote for change.
Thank you for everything you do. Every effort, every contribution, no matter how small will help.
Strength through Peace,
The Kucinich Calling from Home Team
You can help from anywhere in the US by making phone calls. This race could get pretty interesting.
Standing for peace or the environment or for the Constitution will always bring out a few hecklers. We were collecting signatures for the final approval of the construction of a wind farm off the southern Delaware coast in Rehoboth Beach. We got many signatures. One jerk walked by, saying in mock panic,"The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" Coal money interests are about to kill what was believed to be a done deal. We desperately need leadership from a president on down who will halt the madness and inspire our citizens to deal with realities, not the disinformation, spin and suppression that has enveloped the Republican Party and its remaining followers.
1. Got any cartoonists out there? Here's a freebe:
Scene: cold block room w/single light bulb. CIA "interegation" room. An Arab being waterboarded. The agent pouring the water says, "OK, Abdul, I'm gonna ask you one more time—Who set up 9/11?". Abdul: "blubDickblubblub blubCheneyblubblub". Second agent with a clip board, to a third agent with the video camera: "Eh, that's what they all say the first few times…".
The little mouse in the corner says, "Must be a conspiracy"….
If you can draw it ,you can have it.
Cheers
There is a very dark and sad, but plausible case to be made that the torturing is not to make the war less dangereous or shorter for our troops, but to ferret out and neutralize anyone who has first hand knowledge of who the perps are and how the whole thing unfolded. It may also be plausible that OBL is still free because he has arranged one of those " if anything happens to me …" letters like in the better spy v. spy movies. Can anyone come up with a way to connect the dots that is less painful to patriotic sensibilities? I hope so, because these thoughts are hard to bear.
Basic question: What would various perps do if they had the means and motive after pulling off 9/11? There are plenty of detectives, criminologists and psychologists out there who could speak to this conjecture. Let's hear from some.
peace
N's walking the walk. More power to you.
"The New Pearl Harbor" a book.
Also, "Blessed Unrest" by Paul Hawken, for strength and perserverence.
Mr. Nirenberg, should you happen to read this, thank you very much for your courageous efforts.
I would be there if I could.
You are setting a good example. The rest of us We the People need to step it up and get busy too!
Urgent memo to everybody: Pester your representatives -- all of them -- county supervisors, mayor, state assemblyperson, congress critter, everybody! Remind them of their oath to defend the constitution. Tell them that our country has been taken by the War Pigs and we need to get it back!
Congratulations to John Nirenberg for completing the Walk for Impeachment. May the top White House criminals and their many instigators and enablers be impeached, removed, and tried for war crimes ASAP.
It's a lost cause what with Bush and Cheney and their impeachment. But I don't think the American public will be able to stand another President offending and disregarding our Constitution. Reagan got away with disregarding his commitment to uphold the Constitution and Bush totally disregarded his duty to the American public and pardons are a dime a dozen. If we get another criminal in the White House, watch for a lot of unrest, because a lot of folks are fed up with years of corruption and illegal activity. Democracy in America doesn't resemble the democracy we stand for anymore.
I believe holding all of Halburton executives oil regime crooks ( High treason ,ring a bell ? )acountable for ploting the 9/11 so called attacks should be on the top ten topics of the campaign topics. We the people not looking at the facts of the way those buildings were imploded would be a begining. The media mind machine driving your mind is wrong and you know it! Then move the the war crimes. The message that we like some crooks better than others is being sent by allowing this issue to be ignored.
John,
Granny D's son-in-law, a doctor, concluded she had added 20 years to her life by walking across the country in support of publicly financed campaigns. That took 14 months and she turned 90 along the way. Whatever else, and despite the sore ankle, the walk probably did you some good. I hope the dissapointing turnout doesn't lead you to quit your efforts to impact and educate others. For all of us who are this committed our work will last our whole lives.
I want to add here that there is in injustice in the fact that we the people have no other recourse but to march and protest in all kinds of cold weather. I am very tired of that...I want the dignity of a vote on major policy. I urge all readers to visit the website www.nationalinitiative.us and vote to empower yourselves. This site is the result of 15 years of work by Sen. Mike Gravel and is a serious effort to pass a constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right of every citizen to the ballot initiative in every jurisdiction from federal to local throughout the land. Currently only 24 states and D.C. offer their citizens the procedures of empowering thtemselves to make laws "of, by and for the people". Cicero said, "Freedom is the participation in power." We claim that freedom is our birthright but we have to wait 2-4 or 6 years for the right just to vote on who to give our power to, while corporatists have a seat at the table of power every legislative cycle. Legislators claim to be concerned by the popular polls, well here's an idea, let's poll the people on the issues and let them decide the outcome. That is the democratic way to take back America and we won't have to go marching angrily around in cold weather.
