Iranian Boats "Provoke" US Navy Ships in Hormuz: CNN
WASHINGTON -- Five Iranian Revolutionary Guard boats harassed and provoked three U.S. Navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping route off the Iranian coast, over the weekend, CNN reported on Monday.
Citing unidentified U.S. officials, CNN said the Iranian vessels came within 200 yards (meters) of the U.S. ships in international waters in the strait on Saturday, and U.S. sailors came close to opening fire.
Oil prices rose about 30 cents to over $98 a barrel after the CNN report, with traders citing increased risk of disruptions to oil shipments along the key shipping route.
U.S. military officials told CNN the boats were "attack craft" that they believed were operated by Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard.
The Iranian boats made threatening maneuvers against the U.S. warships and threatening radio transmissions, the officials told CNN.
The captain of one U.S. vessel was in the process of giving the order to shoot when the Iranian ships began turning away, CNN said.
A radio transmission from one of the Iranian ships said, "I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes," CNN reported, citing a U.S. official.
After the threatening radio communication, U.S. sailors manned their ships' guns and were very close to opening fire, it said.
There was no immediate U.S. comment.
In Tehran, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman had no immediate comment when asked about the CNN report.
The incident occurred on the eve of a visit to the Middle East by U.S. President George W. Bush, who said last week that one of the aims of his trip was to counter Iran's ambitions in the region.
Washington has been engaged in a long standoff with Tehran over Iran's nuclear program.

Show AllOh dear God here comes my generation's Gulf of Tonkin :(.
Exactly. I wonder if anyone in the MSM will point out the obvious Gulf of Tonkin similarities. Fool me once...
"US Navy ships in Hormuz" says it all.
The US military will travel anywhere on the planet to provoke being provoked.
Not a single person INSIDE THE USA, military or civilian, has ever been successfully "provoked" by Iran. Regardless of all claims made by DICK Cheney.
US military stays at home = no more "provocation".
False flag alert.
We've seen this so many times before. Reichstag anyone? Gulf of Tonkin?
"Citing unidentified U.S. officials, CNN said the Iranian vessels came within 200 yards (meters) of the U.S. ships in international waters in the strait on Saturday, and U.S. sailors came close to opening fire."
Unidentified officials? Why are they unidentified? Are they the ones who actually did the provocation? Sounds like an inside job to me.
(Yawn) If anyone is left, wake me when WW3 is over..
It helps John McCain
Or Maybe it helps Huckabee?
The sky is falling!
The sky is falling!
Go back to sleep - it's only Israel wanting us to attack Iran.
Gulf Of Tonkin all over again. How do these guys get away with this. I suppose they realized early enough that Media complicity is all they need.
The US military out of the Middle East NOW!
Jeezuz...The Gulf of Tonkin Revisited. An attack on Iran is the neofascists...er...neocons best hope for retaining control of the White House. Be afwaid!...be vewy afwaid Amewika! I'll give ten to one odds to all takers that when the truth is known, those US ships were in IRANIAN waters and were the provokers...not the provokees.
We were probably also in Iran's coastal water territories illegally something that the media is not stating.
The empire will negotiate basic human rights, but only from it's knees. The Iranians and Iraqis and freedom fighters of Arabia could follow the US example in Nicaragua, Vietnam and elsewhere... place so many mines in the Straits of Hormuz that the oil looters can't ship any tankers through. When the strait is closed, the world will have the attention of the oiligarchy and whatever reamocrat demublican whore is selected to be their mouthpiece.
Saying "I am coming at you. You will explode in a couple of minutes," is a little like painting a target on you, is it not?
You mean to tell me trained Iranian militia are going to make themselves that vulnerable?
Of course Fox and CNN most likely will not ask this question.
Wonder how the sheeple will react. Will this be swallowed hook, line and sinker?
Remember a few months ago when the British sailors were taken prisoner? What came out of all the investigations and exchanges is the FACT that it is extremely difficult in the Strait of Hormuz to determine where exactly Iran's territorial waters meet international waters so an ideal place for a "faked incident" by US forces!
Time to load up some nukes. Bush was right all the time. That $100 bucks a barrel is hurting our economy and there is the Bush legacy to think about.
I agree with dc, it says international waters, but this dispute was never settled after the British incident.
What MSM call international waters maybe considered Iranian territory!
False Flag? Undoubtedly. Can you say Gulf of Tonkin?
"There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again."
Unless of course your talking about the American Public, who as a whole, and as manipulated by the MSM, seems to be "more than willing to accept any lie", so long as it maintains the illusion of "American Greatness".
Let's hurry and get Obummer into office to fix this mess! If we were bombing Pakistan and Saudi Arabia instead of Iraq and Afghanistan, everything would be alright!
So long as we are bombing someone, damn it! The world is a scary place, but the USA can fix it!
whatfools: No, it isn't just Israel that wants us to attack Iran. It's the American military-industrial complex as well. Which unfortunately means that every Republican except Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul, and most Democrats besides, are champing at the bit for that attack.
Gas $5.00 a gal by Valentine's day?
It'll be interesting to see how the country handles a reinstatement of the military draft.
August 2 and 4, 1964. Tonkin incidents.
December 1, 1969. First military draft lottery since 1942.
Not enough money left to outsource the whole thing, and it's unclear how long we can continue to borrow for these oil wars. Our colonies are getting expensive indeed, and our chieftains are more interested in sharing the cost than sharing their plunder.
Citing unidentified U.S. officials, CNN said....
You disgusting !@#%&()*%^%)*&^*(!!!**&^%%. That will be our f**king epitaph: "Citing unidentified U.S. officials, CNN said, We're all dead."
Pieces of 8.
Well duh, the U.S. and Israel are itching for war with Iran and are trying to provoke Iran into one any way they can. The U.S. was probably in Iranian waters, but will lie about it.
Second Gulf of Tonkin -- or Israel will attack a U.S. ship like they did to the USS Liberty in 1967 -- and call it a "mistake," in order to blame Iran -- after the war is started, of course. Of course the U.S. will excuse Israel again.
Do you want your children and grandchildren to be forced into another unnecessary war by a draft?
Incidentally, Obama wants 100,000 more recruits in the military. Can you guess why? Obama and Hillary Clinton both are pro war with Iran.
Why all this negativity? The invasion of Iran will be a cakewalk and we will be greeted as liberators. Have all of you forgotten the success in Iraq?
A draft will fail. Young americans arent that patriotic or self sacrificing.
In the 60s there was at least some respect for the government. Not now.
The best Bush can do is a bombing run if reports about the military top brass threatening to resign if an attack on Iran happens are true.
It would help McCain though.
Maybe that's why he is has been so pro Bush.
A deal to stir up trouble before the election? Could benefit Hilary as well.
a couple of other reports have even managed to include some of the dialogue that went on between the two parties. however, only quotes from the iranians are included...........
So just how big were these boats which "threatened" the US navy? Cruisers? Battleships? Aircraft carriers? How large were the US ships? And whose coast did this incident occur off? California? Florida? Does the Iranian navy have a flotilla of war ships off the coast of New England? Just who is being threatened here?
Whom is provoking Whom?
Seems like I read someplace the Straight (and the 'All-Shat') were their-waters, not 'ours'...
['No worries', this so-called 'Revolutionary Government' of Iran is actually in Our/Israel's-pocket as a 'phony-enemy', and has-been since both 1953&1979...]
The military of the United States is off the coast of Iran.
The US military is the largest military ever assembled in the history of the planet.
And the US military feels provoked!
Hee hee! If it weren't so dangerous it would actualy be funny.
Imagine if you will the Iranian military having war ships off the coast of Florida.
Hillary is right. False hope is all around. Corporate profit depends on this oil, and the US military will kill you to keep your hands off of it.
This looks a lot like a demolition derby to me. It's hard to figure out where to focus attention when you're being hit from multiple directions all the time. Attention whiplash? Just when Putin is pissed off with the installation of us "defense" missles on it's border, Pakistan military is pissed off about a possible US military incursion, Isreal is meeting with top US officials to see if it would be okay to bomb Iran, a plane load of 6 armed nikes flying across the US, not to mention our imploding economy.........
What if everything explodes at once? Looks to me like the US is trying to provoke Russia even more than Iran at this point. And how will China respond when the shit hits the fan? And where is Gen. Fallon on all this?
Hey Lucky, maybe we should call U.S. officials "Unidentified Flying Objects" to let DK off the hook. Maybe "Unidendified Flying Fu*ks" (UFF's for short)is more appropriate......
John Hall: Happy New Year John - here we go again! Good to have you on the site.
('zozo joe)
Can anyone show me a picture of a 'Iranian Revolutionary Guard boat"?
A boat!?! Sure, boats are going to attack a Navy cruiser, destroyer and frigate. With what? Why no pictures? Why no identified sources?
The official said he didn't have the precise transcript of communications that passed between the two forces, but said the Iranians radioed something like "we're coming at you and you'll explode in a couple minutes."
Yeah, right! What a crock.
This whole bloody war from Afghanistan to Iraq to Iran was planned before 9/11. Just watch Freedom to Fascism. Wake up!!!!
I will be surprised if there is an election in 2008.
John: gotta go defend my home against a pig factory - keep fighting!
Sad
I don't believe it. It's the Bush administration, isn't it? What else needs to be said?
Welcome to the American frontier (meaning the edge of your coveted natural resources)....where we put our own people exactly where our own insults and belligerence will sooner or later produce the desired attacks on our "innocents" and "brave men and women." Then we have all the righteousness we most cherish, like gold edging on a sword, for going in "big" and to keep us from thinking our violent greed might be part of the problem in the first place. Watch the media converge, drooling for it---after all, following events like a dog is better than actual journalism....
Say, think this will help McCain, or Hillarious ? The timing is so good it could really upset this election. Bush could stay on 'til he gets things straightened out ...
It would be interesting to take a survey of Americans 45 years old and younger what the words "Gulf Of Tonkin" mean to them. I think the answer would tell you why this MSM story will "have legs" with the general public.
Ahhhh...If there was no such thing as double standards.
I remember when Israeli jets and torpedo boats attacked the USS Liberty in 1967 during the 6 Days War.
Weren't about 37 sailors killed and 175 wounded? I believe the USS Liberty, an intelligence vessel, was parked too close while Israeli soldiers were massacring unarmed Egyptian prisoners of war.
Well, anyhooooo. I believe any attempt at initiating a Congressional investigation into the incident was called off...a first and last in US history in response to an attack by a foreign nation.
When the Israelis got away with this killing, the elite knew they had it made. They could do anything they wanted as long as they acted as America's middle-eastern gendarme.
Oh. I forgot. Israel is the US's unofficial 51st state. Remember that kiddies when you take your next social studies geography test.
don't worry.....according to latest reports, this kind of 'incident' is 'normal' and happens all the time..........it's a game..........
Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit. Bullshit.

Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said the three US warships -- a guided missile cruiser, a guided missile destroyer and a guided missile frigate -- issued warnings and took evasive action at the approach by the Iranian vessels.
Yup, this is the current generation's version of Bay of Tonkin incident -- and the previous generation's "attack" on the "USS Maine." My, my -- another day in the world of human beings --and another war in the world of their own creation.
Something fishy in the waters of Hormuz; 5 bellicose Enemy Revolutionary Guard boats, operated by Iran's elite terrorists, get within 200 yards of three US Navy Ships, threatening that they will drill holes in their hulls as soon as they get close enough!! Unless naturally, the peace loving marines are finely willing to man the guns. CNN asks us to believe in Unidentified Lying Officials.
The Revolutionary Guards, Iran's elite ideological force, confirmed their naval forces were involved in the incident with US naval ships but said "nothing out of the ordinary" took place, the Fars news agency reported.
"Nothing out of the ordinary happened between Guards' patrol forces and the US boats in the international waters in the Straits of Hormuz," the agency quoted an informed source in the Guards' naval force as saying.
"Revolutionary Guards naval vessels were patrolling the Straits of Hormuz and patrolling the incoming and outgoing vessels into the Persian Gulf," the source added.
"Three American warships were entering regional waters and as usual they were identified and questioned.
"The American boats, just as in the past, introduced themselves and gave the (indentification) number of their boats and continued on their way without any unusual occurrence."
www.presstv.ir
The coincedence of this "encounter" with War crinimal Bush's trip to the killing fields is too plain to see. The FARS report posted above is far more accurate/credible than anything the M$M says.
Okay, many folks above have already, and rightly, pointed out the false-flag look of this "incident."
Imagine for a moment a world in which Iran were United States territory and the United States were otherwise exactly as it is in this sorry world of ours. In such a counterfactual world, would it not go without saying that the Straight of Hormuz would be considered as U.S. territorial waters, in which no uninvited foreign boats would be tolerated?
coco
Thanks for the link that gives another slant on the non-incident.
The Bush administration WANTS the Iranians to attack American ships, and if they won't, the administration will order US ships to attack them. Any old excuse will do.
Yes, it's a replay of the Tonkin Gulf lie.
Maybe they'll get Bush while he's there!
Sorry. Lost control for a minute. hahaha :)
balakirev,
States have only 2 senators each. And on average they pay more in federal taxes than they get back...
