Whether a lot of Bush supporters want to see it or not. There is a lot of our current administration that reminds me of Hitler's Germany in the 30's and 40s. People have so blinded themselves to what this man is doing it's frightening. For whatever reason they have chosen to they have been willing to give him their freedom for a false sense of security. Every fascist Dictator depends upon that that one reality! I think a lot of people have deluded themselves over the years that 'it can't happen here in the US'! It only happens in a less Democratic country 'where people allow themselves to be enslaved'! But, in reality it has happened here. We are face to face with a fascist President who wormed his way into office by fixing the 2000 election. Who has no clue what the Constitution is for. Who has thumbed his nose at the law from day one. Like the first person commented 'Do not forget that every people deserves the regime it is willing to endure!'! That's what it boils down to. We as a nation have chosen to allow this man to commit crimes in our name. And not make him accountable for those crimes. We will never be a whole nation again until we do correct that wrong.

The 'Good-German" was an temporary-Anomaly occasioned between their Weimar-Republic period, throughout the rise of Fascism-there (occasioned only, and ALL quite-Deliberately, by a war they shouldn't have lost, post-war Reparations that were excessive, the Depression, and the too-Human Appeal of a single/enabled charismatic-Leader -- instructed on the "buttons to press" regards Christianity, patriotism, nationalism, racism, etc.). They then immediately 'faded-away', post-War.
The 'Good-American', however, was similarly engineered/instituted as far back as the late-1800's "Yankee-Doodle Dandy", and through-today long-and-well tutored/nourished by ALL/any social-institutions imaginable (including, obviously, all Rose Bowl Charades ever-'marched' -- and national-obsessions like football/Sports/corporatism/'Success'/Patriotism/etc.-themselves).

So -- there was only a brief-period during-which the Good-German took their hesitant-place in History, unlike how the Good-American long-before AND since 'has', and Proudly, taken Theirs.

I looked, yesterday, to see if there was any sign-at-all of Cindy, human-Rights protests re: China, or ANY indication 'whatsoever' that average-Americans were 'wising-up' regards our own, long-Cherished Fascism. What I saw, instead, was virtually a long-commercial urging corporatism, war, consumerism, recruitment, militancy, wrong-headed 'values', idiocy, cheered Job-outsourcing, praise of abusive labor-practices, cheered indicators for the self-destruction of the 'middle-class', Empirical-Hubris, sports/War tie-ins, a 'Bread&Circuses' mentality too-crass to have been entertained even in Rome's-heyday, and the most sickening display of "all that's really wrong with America".
But, not one sign of Cindy, or why China should NOT host any 'Olympics'-event, or why Honda shouldn't destroy the most egalitarian/pro-labor Union left in the US, or ANYTHING-at-all that could give Me/others ANY 'hope' that the sorry/many-years of this-Millennium had taught ANY American ANY damn-thing at all.
Just 'more of the same-old-shit', but in-Spades!

Cindy can maintain all she wants that "but one raindrop raises the Sea", but she/we can only 'whistle in the dark' while marching into a bleak-Future, together. The sheer-Inertia we so-decry is an 'irresistible-force', yet We are NOT 'immovable-objects' -- and our country's Path was carefully-laid LONG before any of us were even-born (much-less my fallen-son's, or hers -- although I can well-relate to the 'madness' that follows such a loss, Cindy and I were 'twain' in a fashion we can't-relate to others not so-Harmed).

Good luck to us all, but this won't be any 'Happier a New Year'. We sink further into this 'muck', daily...and the more we Struggle, the faster some of us sink. I just hope that enough of 'us' survive to see the Pendulum (that we cannot-impede, now) swing-back, so that this-time We can unite to "push, much-harder" -- if/when it finally swings the other-way. About the Litt_Wmn / Sheehan disagreement. It's an important point and one that shouldn't be passed over due to Sheehan's luminous presence, but we should probably leave Casey out of it since that entire issue will be clouded with intense emotion. I once traipsed on this hallowed ground and was roundly, and probably rightly, chastised by another blogger. When it comes to loss in the family, hands off.
However, what are we to make of Sheehan's continued reference to "our wonderful troops?" Where do we see complicity and where exploited innocence? Where do we draw the line?
Every time I see a "Support the Troops" sticker (quite rare these days) I want to pull the driver over and ask: "What, exactly, do you mean by that?"

I have no doubt Litt_Wmn doesn't mean to be cruel, as well I have no doubt that Sheehan's response will always be colored by allegiance and love of the memory of Casey, so we might as well get off it.

It's not about being in the military or dying in war. It's about the life he lived before, that we don't know that much about. He's her son. He's her hero.

As Ashley has kindly pointed out, Casey did indeed join the army prior to Sept 11, but the decision to go to Iraq to support his buddies was still his. That's right, Cindy, Casey WAS a victim, as you have quite correctly concluded. However, your response is rather contradictory, since you both do and don't call him a hero at the same time.

Not calling Casey a hero is not harsh. I have not insulted Casey. Saying someone is not a "hero" is no insult, and I am sorry that you take it as one. It's important, however, that the word hero not be loosely used, especially in this era of debased usage and flawed idols. You have in the past used the word "hero" to describe Casey, and I am only respectfully pointing out that being a solid citizen, a good son or husband or brother is not enough to make one a hero.

I am deeply sensible of your loss, and were it my own son, would call him as much victim as yours. But my question is merely this: Would an ordinary Iraqi citizen, whose family members have been harassed and bullied by U.S. forces, whose lives have been torn apart by gun-toting soldiers who barge into their houses and order them about as though they were criminals in their own land - would those Iraqis call any of those soldiers: "heroes?" Victims, yes. Victims, most certainly. Heroes - regretfully, with respect, yet firmly - no. Would we be calling Iraqi soldiers heroes, were the situation reversed?

Perhaps my protest is also against that media, which persists in portraying returned soldiers as war heroes who served their country. Last I heard, the country was not called Halliburton, Bechtel, or Blackwater. Perhaps it is time now to reclaim that much-abused word "Hero."

Cindy, I have the deepest respect for you - I have carried stickers on my car in your honor - it is merely disagreement with certain of your views that I wish to articulate here. And, if I mistake not, it is precisely that right to dissent, that increasingly precarious right, that you seek so hard to defend.

The stronger the resistance in this country, the more young people will realize that it's not worth it; but the more Americans sit around, the more insane it becomes to blame young people for doing it.

Finally, can we stop calling Cindy "hero?" The feminist in me must point out it is HEROINE.

I watched some of the Rose Parade, but the camera people and the directors were very careful not to show any controversial images. When the Chinese Olympic float went by, there was no image of people turning their backs, but one cameraperson did pan the crown and quickly passed a KUCINICH sign being held up.

For numerology buffs, 2008 is a year of New Beginnings and a Power Year. There are major shifts in consciousness this year and we will see some amazing transformations in all aspects of our relationship to each other the the Earth. Be encouraged. The upheavals you observe are the predecessors to those changes.

There should not be a single parade this year that doesn't have an antiwar contingent. That goes especially for religious or pseudo-religious marches like St. Patrick's day. The mainstream religious groups in the US are just as complicit in this war as their German counterparts were in 1939.

Cindy, You are indeed a hero, but your son, Casey, was not a hero - and it is worrying that you persist in calling him one. As far as I recall he went to the war in Iraq to support his buddies. Does not one need a more weighty reason than this to join up for a war against a country which had never attacked the U.S. and in which, possibly, many innocent lives would have been (and indeed, have been) lost?
Many of us are good sons, nephews, mothers and brothers, as Casey unquestionably was. But it takes more than that to be a hero - it takes the courage to go against the prevailing opinion of the time, the wisdom to find out the truth, and the determination to follow one's own path, regardless of the personal cost. I wish that in good conscience I could call Casey a hero, but I cannot. It is, of course, very likely that had he lived he would have been one. He certainly had the potential to be another Lt. Ehren Watada.

I deeply sympathize with your loss, and I wish to assure you that had my own son been in place of Casey, by all that I hold sacred, I would have uttered words no different from those I have said about Casey himself.

A powerful German film which follows the life of a young woman who was executed because of her White Rose activity is "Sophie Scholl – The Final Days" directed by Marc Rothemund. I highly recommend it.

"One woman named Carrie, was "sorry" that my son is dead, but he volunteered to "honor" this country with his service and even though Carrie is no "fan" of Bush (yeah sure), I have really "crossed the line" this time."

Well apparently some people such as Carrie and many other US citizens have forgottena simple fact - NOTHING about the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq honors this country, our soldiers or any of its citizens. Like the White Rose Society of the past - freedom can only be achieved with a voice. Silence is the voice of aquiesence while vocal dissent is the sweet sound of freedom ringing. God bless you Cindy for your courage - would that our elected (so called) leaders had half of your courage we would not be in this mess now.

Sadly only one candidate for POTUS is a truly honest peace loving individual - DK. Edwards is a decent man as is Obama - after that - the rest are a field of criminals who shoule be jailed for treason. I say we start making citizen arrests of all COngress persons who voted for Iraq on the grounds of treason - failure to uphold the Constitution of the US.

I suppose it didn't happen, but I dreamed that the majority of the people in the crowd agreed that Bush and Cheney have to go and all came out into the street and joined the march calling for impeachment in a mass rally of over 1 million people demanding justice and peace.

Yes, you did "cross the line" this time, Cindy, like Code Pink heroine Desiree Ali-Fairooz did when she showed War Criminal Rice the blood on her hands, like MoveOn.org did in its understated ad about General BetrayUs. You are threatening the protective bubble of ignorance and denial in which the "Carries" of America-the vast majority-live. Americans, with all the blather about freedom, will make even better fascists than the Germans. Millions will turn out in Times Square for New Year's, or at the Rose Parade, but are nowhere to be seen when crimes against humanity are being committed by their government and their rights and livlihoods are being stripped. They are still allowed to shop, and football is still on.

FYI: Sophie Scholl went to the guillotine for "crossing the line." And most Germans never did wake up; it was less uncomfortable to get obliterated.

Dear Cindy: I know exactly what you mean... regarding the celebrations in all their banality happening like "business as usual" when U.S. business is increasingly about spreading conflict and then selling arms to "protect" against it. Of course Naomi Klein explains this sickening predatory model of capitalism, the human equivalent of vultures, in her Shock Doctrine expose.

Thank you for your tireless efforts. In you the world sees a symbol of and segment of that portion of American society that does not easily take to its dreams or beds without genuine distress over the disatrous course of our nation, and its cannibalistic foreign policy.
