2007 is America's Deadliest Year in Iraq
This year has been the most deadly for American troops in Iraq since the invasion nearly five years ago, US military figures out today show.
Deaths peaked in May when 126 American soldiers died in coalition assaults on insurgent strongholds. The second half of the year saw violence drop dramatically with the American surge of 30,000 extra troops and a freeze on activities by some militias.
As of last night in Baghdad, 21 deaths were reported in December, one more than in February 2004, the month with the lowest death toll.
The 899 American troop deaths in 2007 surpassed 2004 when 850 US soldiers were killed.
The US military deaths are dwarfed by Iraqi civilian casualties, although the fluctuations show the same pattern. It is difficult to obtain accurate figures on civilian casualties but the Associated Press said Iraqi civilian deaths peaked in May with 2,155 killed, falling to 718 in November and 710 in December.
Over the year, 18,610 Iraqis were killed. In 2006, the only other full year an AP count has been made, 13,813 civilians were killed.
The civilian toll was compiled by AP from hospital, police and military officials, as well as accounts from reporters and photographers. Insurgent deaths were not included. Other counts differ and some are much higher.
The US military commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, yesterday used the more recent statistics to give an upbeat assessment of the security situation in Iraq.
Overall violence across the country was down roughly 60% since June, he said, and the favourable security situation would allow some US troops to return home during the coming year as responsibilities were handed over to the Iraqi army.
Petraeus also drew attention to the significance of Sunni tribal leaders transferring allegiance to the Iraqi government. In the western province of Anbar, and in Baghdad, coalition of Iraqis known as Awakening Councils or Concerned Local Citizens groups that receive US money and expertise have been joined by Sunni Arabs previously opposed to the invasion. Their coalition in Anbar province, a Sunni stronghold, now numbers 70,000 fighters.
These Sunnis are threatened by Osama bin Laden in a video released on Saturday that is the fifth message attributed to him in 2007.
Bin Laden warned Sunni Arabs who had joined the US initiatives that they had "betrayed the nation and brought disgrace and shame to their people. They will suffer in life and the afterlife."
Along with the increase in American troops, Iraq's lessening violence has been attributed to a freeze on activities by the Mahdi Army, the militia of radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.
British military casualties were also higher in 2007 than 2006. According to Ministry of Defence statistics released at the end of November, 46 soldiers had died in 2007 compared with 29 the year before.
Like America, the first half of the year was worse for British forces than the second half. Of the 46 deaths in total for 2007, 29 were in the first six months of the year as opposed to 17 in the second half.
Unlike the American figures, UK military deaths in 2004 were the lowest since the beginning of British operations in Iraq, known as Operation Telic, in March 2003.
In total, 174 British personnel have died in Operation Telic.

Upbeat??? Look at the figures/facts, not the 'spin'.
MoveOn.org had it right...Petraeus=Betray-us.
Actually, when you look at the track records of the whores in power lying us into killing and dying for their elite friends, there's no one betraying us but us. They simply do what evil blood-sucking swine do. We, on the other hand, continue to wave our little flags, offer up our ignorant off-spring, raise them to bury their little heads in the sand and rally 'round the flag for what appears to be the most destructive, nefarious, rapacious bunch of demons wrapped in human skin to ever soil the planet. So, you want to point the finger? first face a mirror, then point and you'll hit the bull's eye. Support our troops and what they've allowed themselves to do to those poor people that suffer for our lack of back-bone and courage to kick the bastards out? I could no more support our troops than I could have Hitler. Realize this. There are always consequences for actions. Our mindless following of the swine "leading" us for their high protein feeders has brought death on a scale not seen since they suckered us into slaughtering 600,000 phillipinos to save the sugar companies a tariff. Any sympathy I can muster is for the TRUE innocent victims. Those in the world who pay the price of our complacency and cherished ignorance. Those who had NO CHOICE in the matter. Not those who allowed themselves to be sucked in and invaded them. You little lemmings squeel and call people of my ilk traitors, cowards. But who are the real cowards and traitors? Those who SEE something's wrong and have the courage to denounce it and demmand an accounting? Or those who refuse to see the obvious and gnash their teeth while they invade and murder to "defend our country". Our country? this is no more our country than Nazi Germany was the German people's. Lastly, I was NOT raised to laud, worship OR support cowards who either directly torture, or a people that "support" it.
I'm a Viet Nam Vet, and all I can say is this program in Iraq is nothing new. The same assessments came from Gen. Westmoreland, the Patrayius of that conflick. Remember the TET offensive ,"we have them on the run". He and the White House agreed on a strategy of selling our success by giving the American public body counts. Then the body counts were of dead cong, and the regular army of the north Vietnamese. Today we are sold on the body counts as well. That being of not so many dead Americans as each month goes by. The results are the same, we occupy a foreign country, and they kill us. Ultimately we wlll leave Iraq as in Viet Nam. The only differences are the math totals. This movie [horror] is just a re-run.
I feel bad for Shawna Hill...
I totally agree with paschn on this one. We are to blame for all this. It's OK to point the finger at a group of soulless individuals, who could pass for the gatekeepers of Hades, but who gave them the authority to do all of this. In the US, there are around 50% of the people who voted for Bush, and the rest (bar a minority) who will rally round, and support their "Commander in Chief" and his troops, no matter what. It is the same here in the UK, we are expected to support "our" troops under all circumstances, because they are doing a job, and helping to protect our country. This is the biggest lie ever told. Both the US and British armies are doing nothing to protect the security of their own people. They have in fact made the World a more dangerous place, because they have allowed themselves to be used as "pawns" in a giant game of greed.
I know Amos feels "bad for Shawna Hill", but I feel a whole lot worse for the hundreds of thousands of innocents who have been murdered in our name, as has been said before, they had no choice in the matter.
I have a few words for Amos and Shauna : The American government , Pentagon , and generally the populace donèt give a damn for tears .
Itès an ephemeral image and then gone . Tough but true and realistic words of encouragement starting with Shauna is by far the best solution to ending the occupation : ÈRyan my son,I will understand and approve if you desert or to any potential enlistee , Èdonèt enlist.
Real simple : the occupation will end when the soldiers desert
I originally thought about asking for my picture to be removed because this site and many comments are in total opposition to what I believe. But instead I am going to set the record straight on behalf of a true American Hero PFC Ryan J. Hil as only his mama can do.
First of all don't be sad for me. Yes I cry everyday and I miss my only child like none of you could ever imagine. However, Ryan was where he wanted to be fighting for a cause that he believed in. You and I enjoy our freedoms because of the brave men and women who are fighting for your very right to post awful negative comments about what they are doing. I highly recommend that if you don't want your freedom then leave this country and go some place else and complain, because frankly I am sick and tired of you dishonoring my son who willing gave his life for you to sit and gripe.
Secondly, the President did not kill my son, the Pentagon did not kill my son, the American Government did not kill my son. Cowardly insurgents hiding in the shadows waiting for him to come bye murdered him. Ryan voted for and supports President Bush so please do not tie his name to any more negative comments about the President or our leaders.
Finally, PFC Ryan Hill went to Iraq willingly knowing the risk. As my only child he could have used that as an excuse not to go but didn't. Like a man he stood up and fought knowing that he probably wouldn't come home. He put himself above all others fighting to protect the very freedoms that you and I enjoy. He could only do this because he had confidence that he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and as he said "if i come home God has more for me to do, and if I don't, then I have finished my job." I guess the question is...Do you have that kind of confidence?
