Democrats Need to Jettison Lieberman As a Troublesome Traitor
Joseph Lieberman is a political bad penny.
The Connecticut senator and pseudo-Democrat just won't go away - or stop undermining the political party that he clings to like a barnacle to the side of a ship. Since Al Gore selected him as his vice presidential running mate in 2000, Lieberman has been more contemptuous than caring about the Democratic Party's claim to national leadership.
By seeking re-election to the Senate at the same time he was running for vice president, Lieberman signaled to the nation a half-hearted support for the Democrats' chances of winning the White House in 2000.
Last year he sought re-election as an independent after losing the Democratic Party's primary to Ned Lamont, a political newcomer who waged a largely anti-war campaign against the three-term senator.
"I am in this race to the end," Lieberman said at the time. "For me, it is a cause, and it is a cause not to let this Democratic Party that I joined with the inspiration of President Kennedy in 1960 to be taken over by people who are far from the mainstream of American life that I fear we will not elect Democrats in the numbers that we should in the future."
Electing Democrats was his goal then. Now, it's foisting a Republican into the White House.
"I know it's unusual for a Democrat to be endorsing a Republican," he said recently in announcing his support for GOP Sen. John McCain in the presidential race. "It's even unusual for an independent Democrat like me to be endorsing a Republican.
"You know, political parties are important in our country, but they're not more important than what's best for our country. They're not more important than friendship. They're not more important than our future. And that's why I'm proudly here to urge Republicans and independents in New Hampshire to come out on Jan. 8 and make John McCain the next president of the United States," Lieberman said.
In endorsing McCain, Lieberman effectively opposes all eight Democrats vying for their party's presidential nomination - including fellow Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd.
Of course, Lieberman is free to back whomever he wants. But if he feels the entire field of Democratic candidates is unacceptable - from Dennis Kucinich on the far left to Dodd and Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden closer to the center - then he ought to cut his thin ties to the Democratic Party.
Sure, such a move would put control of the Senate back in the hands of Republicans, but it would also help Democrats regain their soul.
Currently, Democrats and Republicans each hold 49 seats in the Senate. The other two seats are held by Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent, and Lieberman, who calls himself an independent Democrat. By aligning themselves with Democrats, Sanders and Lieberman have given Democrats a one-vote majority - and thus control of the Senate.
It's this thin margin that likely caused Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., to soft-peddle his objections to Lieberman's endorsement of McCain.
"I have the greatest respect for Joe, but I simply have to disagree with his decision to endorse Sen. McCain," Reid told CNN in a written statement.
Lieberman is a fifth-columnist whom Democrats should chase from their ranks. The short-term consequences would be to lose control of the Senate. (In a 50-50 split, Vice President Dick Cheney would use his vote as Senate president to give the GOP a majority.)
But in the long-term, this political house-cleaning might help Democrats win a comfortable majority in 2008 - if voters believe Democrats will push their political agenda as aggressively as Republicans have pushed theirs the past seven years.
That won't happen if Democrats are seen as hostages of Lieberman's whimsical political behavior - and afraid to get rid of a bad penny.

Show AllLieberman's real loyalty is to the Likud party of Israel.
I wholeheartedly agree with the above. Lieberman should renounce his American citizenship and go live in Israel. It's obviously more important to him than the United States. Otherwise, why would he endanger our national security to ensure Israel's?
You're both right about Lieberman but the only person he's loyal to is himself and the ego he displays by actually believing anyone cares what this man has to say...But to give back majority rule in the Senate the last year of this administrations reign of horror would be foolish. Send Joe packing in early January 2009 and let him stew in the corner for the rest of his term...
Lieberman, I suppose one could say, is at bottom a power junkie.
There are enough right wing nut jobs in Connecticut to elect this man who betrayed the Democrats. They all suscribe to the Jewish extremist and militant solution to the middle east.
That is his electoral base, and party does not matter. I have even forgotten the name of his democratic opponent who beat him, how stood on a progressive platform.
Don't forget, he has blonde hair and blue eyes, and that really counts in a state with an Ivy league college.
I say kick him out of the Democratic Party. He talks like a Republican, votes like a Republican, and hugs the Republican President, Bush. He is a DINO(Democrat In Name Only) If he has the audacity to attend the Democratic National Convention, next August in Denver, CO, he should be shown the door. He should change his party registration, sit and caucus with the Republicans. Good riddance! We don't need anymore DINO's in the Democratic Party. Go Kucinich! The only true Democrat in the race.
Paul_GA: "Lieberman, I suppose one could say, is at bottom a power junkie."
And don't forget "bottom-FEEDER"!
Lieberman is not only an opportunistic traitor to we the people,he's also a straight nut. A power junkie who if elected would take corporate payoffs from corporate interests. He deals in jump ship, sound tough, play it safe and put your money on the man in power politics.
And apparently he knew the fix was in in 2000.
WHy pick on Lieberman? Tell me how rest of the Dems are better (Dennis excluded)???
u r right citizen1. lets send the dems and liberman to israel they will be happier over there, and on second thought so would the rest of us.
oh
and so will we
Greenerthanthou, I have heard that, too -- Lieberman was actually a GOP mole within the Gore campaign, telling the Bushovics what his next move would be, especially in the court challenges over the Florida recount.
Leiberman is a symptom, not the problem. The problem is that the Democrats have been a gutless bunch who have stood by (at best) and supported (at worst) the atrociously immoral things that Bush and his bunch have been doing. Both parties have been in the employ of corporate powers. Neither supports the interests of people, neither the American people nor any other people other than the rich and powerful. Bush admits this openly. The Democrats do it while saying otherwise. This certainly doesn't make them better, and kicking Leiberman out of the party won't save its soul.
[Lieberman] ought to cut his thin ties to the Democratic Party. [S]uch a move would put control of the Senate back in the hands of Republicans...
Oh, I hadn't noticed that the Democrats controlled the Senate.
Joe Lieberman obviously has great feelings towards Israel (which I guess is understandable if I try a little empathy), but he needs to realize that he's not governing in the Knesset. If he feels that Israel's interests are of greater import than American interests, then he should renounce his citizenship, move to Israel, and get elected there.
He obviously thinks Israel is so special that he'll champion the continued genocide against the Iraqi people and the havoc it is bringing into the lives of those people. The Democrats are a bunch of gutless bastards who let everyone run over them, so they deserve an asshole like Lieberman.
Nice posts. Lieberman is some pig. And part of the Israeli tail wagging the American dog/cur.
The idea that we share common interests-subjugating people of the ME-is a hoodwinking.
WW3 will start with a mushroom cloud over Tel Aviv.
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction (9-11 is a clear ex),
AmericaIsrael keep doing what they do (clusterbombing civiilians in Gaza, torturing and murdering the Palestinians) one of the missing Soviet "suitcase" nukes will incinerate Tel Aviv one day soon.
I hope Lieberman is there.
The Nazi's were defeated. Isreal will be as well. Maybe it will be "God's Will" for his "Chosen" people. Check this gentile; that means you were "not chosen" I guess that would be the Palestinians crime in Gaza where they are penned in like cattle and strafed by Apache helicopter gunships (supported by tanks and APC's-All made in America)
Scum of the earth.
And how 'bout those thirty something American Serviceman they murdered? That's some lobby, when it's okay to murder American soldiers. Go Israel Go Joe L.! But a fire awaits thee, scumming murderer of women and children!
From an American Indian perspective, Lieberman and other Jewish politicians in Connecticut were instrumental in declassifying two American Indian tribes, that had been recognized since Colonial times by the State of Connecticut. Now they officially no longer exist. This is genocide by a Jew. I agree that Lieberman is Likud and that Israel is where his loyalties reside.
It's Christmas morning, and I'm going to stay right here until I think of something positive to say about HoJoe Lieberman!
... well, Christmas crickets are nice too.
I think it's right here at CommonDreams---an op-ed by Ralph Nader in which he said, "With Democrats like these, who needs Republicans?!?"
I can see why I'm solidly for Ron Paul next year ...
Why should the party jettison him? Lieberman is the very face of the Democratic Party: a Bush ass-kisser, a war profiteer and a shameless violator of the US Constitution like 99% of them.
The Democratic Party is the greatest cancer afflicting the nation right now, not only should they be voted out but also wiped out as a political party from the pages of American history. I want to see Pelosi, Reid and all the senators who voted for this war and to continue funding it to be tried at the Hague, and put in a small cell with Bush and Cheney.
VOTE SHEEHAN. VOTE INDEPENDENT.
By the time he bolted from the Democratic Party, it should have been clear to everyone that Joe Lieberman was something more pernicious than a mere icon for political ruthlessness. He is also egomaniacally and unswervingly Neocon, a man who relentlessly puts Israel's right-wing politic ahead of all other political considerations. His in-your-face support for violent, military responses on practically every issue of Middle East policy, has contributed mightily to Americans—and, ironically, Israelis—being widely despised throughout that region, while at the same time, living under constant threat of reprisal.
Now, consider that Joe Lieberman has simultaneously contributed, like no other, to cause a measurable diminishment of the American peoples' confidence in their current Democratic congressional leadership, and then ask yourself this question: should Democrats dump Joe Lieberman?
The DNC machinery was devoted to making Lieberman the Democratic candidate in Connecticut, and failed. So they blandly gave lip service to Lamont while dumping resources behind Lieberman.
The problem remains the DLC and the Clintonites, who will sacrifice all integrity to getting "Democrats" elected, who will then use demi-liberal jargon to cover imperialist policies.
Lieberman is an egomaniac who cares NOTHING for his party or his country. He cares about Joe Lieberman and the power he has attained.
That's all.
Yes, this was the man that Al Gore picked to be his running mate. And now Al Gore is some sort of liberal hero and Lieberman is not? Both say much about the other.
You may not be correct with the giving up of majority status part of your story. In the past, if the split becomes 50-50 during a two year congressional session, the majority stays with the party that held it prior to the split becoming even.
I don't know if this is just tradition, or if it's codified into law. But I suspect it is law. After all, the vice-president's vote only matters for breaking ties. He/She has no vote as to the Senate leadership.
So, in these circumstances, Democrats would retain the 'majority' status. All Dems would potentially lose is Lieberman's vote. Since he never votes with the Dems anyway... there is NOTHING TO LOSE!
Somebody set Jingo Joe up with a teenage hooker.
DON'T CUT OFF YOUR NOSE TO SPITE YOUR FACE!!
Measure twice and cut once - make sure before you jump!
I would agree with Dewayne and the rest of you if there was certainty that we would not lose control of the Senate. The stakes are so high right now, that we can not afford to be the minority party in the Senate. It would be best to get rid of him in January 2009 when we will have more than a one seat majority. At that time he should be exorcised with extreme prejudice and much ridicule, as he is uncerimoniously stripped of all his seniority and forced to leave with his tail between his legs to caucus with his beloved repugs.
I don't need to be reminded that we have a bunch of spineless, gutless and brainless dems in the Senate, and that we don't get his vote on our issues anyway. But, what we do get is a majority and chairman on every committee, ability to set the agenda, and SUBPOENA POWER. Even though we don't like the way things have been going, it is still far better than having the Bush Crime Family running the show. Without control of the Senate, thugs like Alberto Gonzales and others would still be there, and none of the current hearings in the Senate would be happening.
There is a time and a place for everything, and Joe Liarmans time is fast approaching. But, unless we are absolutely sure that we will not lose control of the Senate, now is not the time to kick Liarman to the curb.
I just wish that Harry Reid would stop making public statements about what a good Democrat Liarman is, as he did on the PBS News Hour last week, after Liarman had endorsed McCain for president.
Liberman is a olitical whore who pimps himself to any buyer.
Hoa binh
Why would Reid seek to jettison Lieberman when they're two birds of a feather? Oh, yes, I know, Reid talks a little differently, but let's face it: Reid is not an inept, dottering old fool, he's a savvy enabling co-conspirator to this criminal administration. His record speaks for itself.
Is there anyone watching elected officials with non-US interests, and their blocs, to make sure they aren't leaking US national interests like a sieve to a foreign government?
Does this duty now fall upon Americans themselves?
Leiberman has been caucusing with the Democrats while voting with the Republicans, at least where the war is concerned. He is a war hawk, and so is McCain, right now at least. Who can say where "Weathervane" McCain will stand tomorrow.
Leiberman was reelected to his own Senate seat not with Democratic support, but with Republican support. The Republicans in Connecticut abandoned their own candidate and bet the house on Leiberman. He has to look out for the interests of those who backed him. We saw this coming at the start of the 110th Congress.
Under the new rules, if Leiberman switches alignment, and caucuses with the Republicans, the Democrats would still chair the committees and would control the agenda as if in majority. They can't change leadership in the middle of the session.
It wouldn't make a bit of difference if Leiberman jumped ship since he votes with them anyway. I doubt if a Vice Presidential tie-breaker vote would ever surface. They obstruct everything the Democrats want. All they need is 41 votes to control a bill by threatening a filibuster.
I say make them filibuster until they drop it, and then pass the legislation. By not enforcing that rule, Harry Reid looks weak.
DenverCurmudgeons comments are the best of the bunch. It is right on the money and what I was going to write, but he beat me to it. Rats!
Lets send the Senator from Tel Aviv back there.

Lieberman, Chertoff and Harman...the same people who brought you the home grown terrorism act.
Batbird, you said, "Democrats would still chair the committees and would control the agenda as if in majority. They can't change leadership in the middle of the session."
Leadership can and does change in the middle of the session. Whenever the majority changes, control of the Senate changes hands to the majority party.
Remember, it happened after the 2000 elections to the repugs, when one of their own became an independent, giving the dems a majority.
How about D3emocratic overtures to Ron Paul?
Ron Paul is a member of the House of Representatives, not a Senator. We (dems) currently enjoy a comfortable majority in the House, and this wil also increase in 2009.
Ron Paul is also a nut, as the only issues he shares with progressives is his stand against the war and support for the constitution. He is actually a Libertarian, not to be confused with Liebertarian, a party of one.
People who don't like Lieberman and who support Obama and think he is more Progressive than Hillary (not) should know that after Ned Lamont won the Conn dem primary OBAMA CAMPAIGNED FOR LIEBERMAN!!
Here's some back-up for my statement (there's more all over the net):
Obama rallies state Democrats, throws support behind Lieberman
By Stephanie Reitz, Associated Press Writer | March 31, 2006
HARTFORD, Conn. --U.S. Sen. Barack Obama rallied Connecticut Democrats at their annual dinner Thursday night, throwing his support behind mentor and Senate colleague Joe Lieberman.
We'll have only neocons on the ballot in '08.
A canceled election in so many words.
Let him "play" (unfortunatly like the rest of them are doing) until the election is over and Bush is gone, then contact your own Senators and have them blackball every pork barrel request that Lieberman makes. When da money don't flow---Joe gotta go.
Liaberwhore is a Zio-Fascist Hypocrite.
He is one of the reasons the 2000 selection was even close.
