Iran: Bush Loses Even More Credibility
We are still in the dark as to what evidence the U.S. turned up that has now convinced U.S. officials that Iran was on the level when it denied nuclear ambitions.
It was good news for the world -- and bad news for hawkish neo-conservatives in the U.S. -- when a new U.S. intelligence assessment concluded that Iran had stopped its nuclear weapons program in 2003. President Bush says he learned about it week before last.
This blockbuster came from a National Intelligence Estimate that represents a consensus of all U.S. spy agencies.
Norman Podhoretz -- one of the founding fathers of the neo-conservative movement -- had urged Bush in a private meeting last September to bomb Iran rather than allow it to acquire nuclear weapons.
Whatever prompted the abrupt turnaround, it was enough to give Bush pause before he rushed to attack a third Muslim nation during his waning watch at the White House.
Without a handy enemy to spook the American public, the Bush administration seems forlorn. Perhaps we should be nervous.
Meanwhile, Iran, feeling vindicated, wants the U.S. to drop its hawkish moves and to refrain from imposing new economic sanctions against it.
But Bush has ruled out any softening of U.S. policy -- and he apparently has the support of his allies.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak disputed the U.S. conclusions, saying Israel still believes Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons.
Israel is believed to have the only nuclear arsenal in the Middle East but has never permitted the U.N. to inspect its weapons program and has never signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Nor has any U.S. president publicly pressured it to do so.
One casualty in the Iran-nuke, no-nuke episode is the credibility of the Bush administration. Bush recently evoked the frightening possibility of "World War III" and Vice President Dick Cheney warned Iran of "serious consequences" if it built a nuclear bomb.
For months Iran has been in the bull's eye of American foreign policy as the pundits have focused on an impending attack on its military sites. It has not been a question of "if" but "when" among the experts in some Washington think tanks.
Some in the military establishment, including Adm. William, Fallon, the top U.S. commander in the Middle East, have been urging the president to hold off from any precipitous action.
Iran had consistently denied it was developing nuclear weapons. But up to now it could not convince the U.S. or any of the Western Powers that its uranium enrichment program was for peaceful purposes.
Several weeks ago, Russian President Vladimir Putin dismissed U.S. claims against Iran and said there was "no evidence" that it was seeking a nuclear arsenal.
Among the vindicated is Mohamed ElBaradei, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency, who has been scorned by hawkish officials because his agency has been insisting that there was "no evidence" of an undeclared nuclear weapons project in Iran.
Of course there are many more questions. What intelligence led to this 180-degree reversal in U.S. foreign policy? Did the U.S. naval buildup in Iran's backyard convince the mullahs that Bush was trigger happy? Or did Bush decide things were bad enough for Republican candidates without adding more U.S. military muscle in the Middle East?
Bush told a news conference: "One of the reasons why this is out in the public arena is because I wanted -- and our administration believed that, one -- it was important for the people to know the facts as we see them."
Second, he said it was important for the American people to see that there has been a reevaluation of the Iranian issue.
How refreshing! The American people could have used such commendable candor and salvaged our national credibility before we invaded and occupied Iraq.

Show AllJustin,
I saw the other night somewhat over a million watch Olberman while about 23 million see the nightly news on regular channels We have a long way to go, eh?
Helen, we love you, and easily understand on the seating chart for the press conference Bush held to answer about the NIE why your name had a big X through it, meaning "Don't call on this person at all".
Hang in there Helen, all dogs have their day and we will have ours very soon...in spades!
Helen- Bush never had any credibility...at least with some of us!
The title reads: "Bush Loses Even More Credibility" ~ along with:
1. His morality
2. His common sense
3. His humanity
4. His sanity
5. His status
6. His right to walk free from a long jail sentence
7. His scruples
8. His legitimacy...
... (if, he ever had any of the above, that is!)
He has also lost / cost the lives of countless (-deliberately uncounted) fellow human beings; and all because he is an egomaniacal blight upon the face of this earth, who a race of North Americans thought, in their sadly duped and vacuous way, was a being thought fit to lead them.
It's true. He does lead them.
~ Into the jaws of hell! But now it's time to unravel that mess, and revoke every last thing this demented, poltroon and crazed idiot ever stood for...
America, under his crass stewardship has lost... not just credibility, but all bearings.
Time to claim back what a (basically sound) nation deserves: Freedom to think for themselves, freedom from the oppressive tyranny of mess media, freedom from addictions to all that is harmful to their consciousness, freedom from the dark invaders who stole, - first an election or two, then the People's right to live in peace and harmony with the rest of the world...
Please... Bring *that* on!
Where is "Slam dunk" George Tenent when Bush needs him?
Polishing his Medal of Freedom I guess.
The drum beats have been kicking around for a long time, the Bush administration backed by Israel, Canada, France ,Britain, and Germany have all been talking about the military option against Iran. But have they really tried to negotiate with them? Have they even tried to sit down at the table and talk on a high level about all the issues, support for Hezbollah and Hamas, their role in Iraq, the nuclear issue, with out any pre-conditions and demands? If the answer is no, then the next question is why? If our Prime minister, If our President if our leaders in general are truly believers in dimplomacy like they claim, why haven't they sat down with Iran? What harm can it do to talk, and at the very least try to make an effort to resolve this peacefully? Contrary to their claims they have not done this. They have made their stand clear, that Iran must halt uranium enrichment in order to have real talks. However, seeing as how uranium enrichment is main issue in the conflict, for Iran to halt enrichment right off the bat, without even holding real talks, is essentially admitting defeat. Basically throwing away any bargaining chips you may have had. So how can you have serious negotiations and still save face, if you have already agreed to submit to your adversaries demands beforehand? At that point negotiations are already over before they begin. No self respecting nation would consider this as a viable option. So I am asking you to sign this petition in support of diplomacy and peace. I don't care what your political stance is, Democrat, Republican, NDP, Conservative, Liberal or whatever. It doesn't matter if you think Iran is a crazy nation hell bent on getting nuclear weapons to destroy Israel, it doesn't matter if you think your President or Prime Minister is the best your country has ever had, it doesn't matter if you think Iran is an imminent threat to world security or not. It doesn't matter if you are a Christian, a Jew, or a Muslim or whatever. What matters is that WE the people take the power back.WE decide what countries we want to negotiate with WE want diplomacy, we want peace. We want our ELECTED leaders to do what we tell them to do not the other way around! If you even do not want to sign this petition for that reason sign it for this. Sign it to save lives. Save American lives, save Canadian lives, Save Israeli lives, save Iranian lives. SAVE LIVES. It doesn't matter who is right and who is wrong, every one has an opinion on that. To many lives have been lost throughout our history because of that argument. What matters is that we respect peace. We respect ourselves. Do you want your kids or future kids to grow up in a world of constant war? Or do you want them to live in peace? We have tried war in Iraq and Afghanistan and it did not work. Its time we give peace a try for a change.

I did not know he had anymore credibility to lose?
One casualty in the Iran-nuke, no-nuke episode is the credibility of the Bush administration.
What credibility ever existed for a US administration that was selected by the Supreme Court and immediately set out to defy the laws of the land? It can only exist in an alter-reality set up by the Hearst Newspapers editorial board. The media does have a stake in the alter-reality. It helps ensure a more consistent flow of advertising revenue. The "invisible hand" of the market keeps the American public's self-determination trimmed down to size and their exchange becomes more streamlined. They become, in effect, cogs in the machine.
Last night Keith Olberman blasted Bush out of the water about his public response to the NIE.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MeXb1oS3OUw
I think it's his best to date, and he speaks for many of us.
It is impossible for bush to lose any more credibility.
anney..No doubt, it was his best to date. Now, if we can just get him to give Sibel Edmunds some air time, we can put the entire government behind bars.
dcbeltway, You beat me to the keyboard.
TheLorax, Never under estimate the ignorance of the American public. Slowly, too slowly, they are beginning to see the light.
anney, Olbermann was good last night.
youthpary, It's about controlling the oil and encircling Russia with more military bases. If Iran had as many nuclear bombs as Israel, they still wouldn't attack the 'chosen ones' in spite of the constant barrage of propaganda aimed at Iran. The same thing happened in Iraq. Rocket science it's not.
Credibility???
Good Lord, Helen. If bushie were to claim that the sky was blue, I'd look out the window expecting to see a purple sky.
Credibility of government officials and representatives under US law is not a throw-away matter.
From: U.S. Code : Title 18 : Section 1001
Section 1001. Statements or entries generally
(a) Except as otherwise provided in this section, whoever, in any matter within the jurisdiction of the executive, legislative, or judicial branch of the Government of the United States, knowingly and willfully
(1) falsifies, conceals, or covers up by any trick, scheme, or device, a material fact;
(2) makes any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or representation; or
(3) makes or uses any false writing or document knowing the same to contain any materially false, fictitious, or fraudulent statement or entry;
shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 5years, or both.
(b) Subsection (a) does not apply to a party to a judicial proceeding, or that party's counsel, for statements, representations, writings or documents submitted by such party or counsel to a judge or magistrate in that proceeding.
(c) With respect to any matter within the jurisdiction of the legislative branch, subsection (a) shall apply only to
(1) administrative matters, including a claim for payment, a matter related to the procurement of property or services, personnel or employment practices, or support services, or a document required by law, rule, or regulation to be submitted to the Congress or any office or officer within the legislative branch; or
(2) any investigation or review, conducted pursuant to the authority of any committee, subcommittee, commission or office of the Congress, consistent with applicable rules of the House or Senate.

Who wants to file the first lawsuit against the whole damned Bush administration under any of the provisions above?
Dear Anney, What would be the first step in filing such a suit? I will be proud to do exactly that.
I dare one of the sitting Press Corpse to stand up and state, on the record, to his face, that he is a liar and not another word of his will be published without the disclaimer that all that follows is most likely a lie. Not a falsehood, or misrepresentation or misstatement...a lie. Bush is the representation of the denial of the citizens of this country, and its press and media, of what is true.
Next, have this or some other courageous reporter, ask the soldiers who ultimately are the ones to attack Iran, to stand down. Even Bush cannot launch an attack without the cooperation of the people pulling the triggers and launching the missiles. No one, including Hitler, with whom I equate Bush, has or had that power. It is only fear that allows the cowardly act of naked aggression against another human being to be exercised.
Bush is a DEAD MAN WALKING!
peace,

I wonder if the ACLU would take a class-action lawsuit against the administration under this statute. If they would, I'd join in, too. Bet a lot of CDers would. As a member of the class, I think one would have to prove that one has been "damaged" in some way by the falsehoods.
Maybe some attorneys who read these threads can give us some more information about what approach might work.
You guys are right, Bush doesn't have any credebility left, that's why I believe that this NIE is just being used as a political tool. On the surface it looks like a blast of the Bush administration, but all they lose is credability they didn't have in the first place.
What they gain is the admission that Iran WAS trying to acquire nuclear weapons, therefore insinuating that they may try AGAIN, in the future, when attacking them will be more politically gainful.
It's like I saw someone else respond to this issue in a different thread.
"It's like if a NIE came out that said that your neighbor stopped beating his wife in 2003. But he still used to beat his wife, and may again in the future"
Watch out for this one guys, it is the most subversive propaganda, because liberals can grab ahold of it to attack Bush, but in doing so are subconciously giving his arguements for attacking Iran in the future more cedibility.
scaredhippie
What you cite isn't quite analogous. Iran may have indicated it WANTED to beat its wife, but it didn't do so, and law enforcement can't arrest, prosecute, and punish someone for what they want to do or we'd all likely be in prison.
Besides, anyone who knows international law, specifically the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, will ask why Iran should suffer an attack even if it DID acquire nuclear weapons, when Israel, India, Pakistan, and North Korea were not attacked when they acquired them.
The US would be committing yet another war-crime if it unilaterally attacked Iran except in response to an Iranian attack on the US.
Hang in there, Ms. Thomas, and give'm hell. "Without a handy enemy to spook the American public, the Bush administration seems forlorn. Perhaps we should all be nervous." Indeed.
The neo-clowns are apoplectic and the Zionists are kvetching.
Sounds okay by me.
I've been sleeping better.
Now if Cheney would just go back to Mordor and Bush to Crawfish so he can finish reading 'My Pet Goat'...
doesn't reading helen remind you of those fond talks with your grandmother????
she's seen so much
I follow Iran on Military Websites. Our military analysts point out that Iran has a very modest military budget by middle-east standards. Fox News always shows Iran with missles which is deceptive. Iran has been buying heavily on the defensive side and does not appear to be trying to project forces beyound its border.
Anney,
I see your point. But facts were never important to these people. All they care about is public perception. I just see this as another way of establishing Iran as a country with Nuclear weapons ambitions in the minds of the general public (whether they have halted the program or not) That way it will be much easier to convice people in the FUTURE that they are trying to RESTART the program, which even liberals admit exsisted at one point when they were using it bash Bush. I'm just saying, keep your eye on this one. I think that the Neocons will try to spin it to actually justify there crazy warmongering. It's not like they haven't done this kind of thing before.
With all the power that this administration has given itself, and their propensity for keeping secrets, I don't believe that this report would have been released if they didn't want it to be.
An interesting result of the Bush administration's foreign policy (or lack of) in the Middle East has been its almost complete loss of hegemony in the region. The US military cannot even secure and control a nation such as Afghanistan, much less Iraq.
Iran having the bomb would have eliminated much of the US hegemonic advantage over Iran (ie they could invade and occupy anytime the chose), and the US was loathe to give up that advantage.
It is truly a sign of an empire in decline that the US, despite the best strivings of the neocon establishment, was unable to maintain that hegemonic advantage EVEN WITHOUT A NUCLEAR DETERRENT IN IRAN. An interesting parallel to Israel's inability to effectively counter Hezbollah in summer 06.
Thank you Helen, I've long appreciated you, what you say and do.
That said, MANY of us have never put any credibility in clowns. And gwb is just another in a long line. Though in his case he's just another of the dangerous/psychotic ones, not the good, fun-loving sort of clown that leaves people laughing, smiling, or chuckling with a good feeling inside.
Wanna' see how this gwb clown will likely be re-membered?

It's a short opinion piece titled: Airbrushing the Bloodstains from their Hands
Here is more news today about Bush's illegal wrecking of the Constitution. He has made the Department of Justice subservient to himself. It is breathtaking. Bush MUST be stopped and brought to justice.
Sen. Whitehouse Reveals Secret DoJ Legal Memos: Bush Determines What Is Constitutional
This morning, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) delivered an impassioned floor speech
http://emptywheel.firedoglake.com/2007/12/07/whitehouse-rips-the-white-house/
to help frame the debate over FISA reform.
Using his privilege as a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Whitehouse said he has "spent hours poring over" secret opinions issued by the Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel (OLC) — and he took notes.
Whitehouse is a lawyer, a former U.S. Attorney, a former legal counsel to Rhode Island's Governor, and a former State Attorney General. He said he sought and received permission to have his notes declassified because he wanted to show the public "what the Bush administration does behind our backs when they think no one is looking."
"To give you an example of what I read," Whitehouse said on the Senate floor, "I have gotten three legal propositions from these secret OLC opinions declassified. Here they are, as accurately as my note-taking could reproduce them from the classified documents":
White House proposition 1. An executive order cannot limit a President. There is no constitutional requirement for a President to issue a new executive order whenever he wishes to depart from the terms of a previous executive order. Rather than violate an executive order, the President has instead modified or waived it.
White House proposition 2. The President, exercising his constitutional authority under Article II, can determine whether an action is a lawful exercise of the President's authority under Article II.
White House proposition 3. The Department of Justice is bound by the President's legal determinations.

This administration's arrogant GALL is beyond description. And shall the Democrats just sit there tut-tutting?
The Keith Olberman blast!Wow;an indictment of Bush so scathing, you should expect the throngs to take to the steets in protest of this adminisration.I don't know what percentage of the American public get to see this program or what percentage of those watching have been anaesthetized to any feelings of outrage, but for citizens of any country abiding this group of gangsters as their representatives in govt is unbelievabe.Hopefully, words of Helen Thomas to Bush "You'll be sorry!"realy hit their mark this time.
You GO, Helen! one of the very, very few journalists with a backbone anywhere anymore....
Without a handy enemy to spook the American public, the Bush administration seems forlorn.
Well, I don't know how much Canada can spook the American public but we could be an enemy coz you ain't gettin' our water, buster!
(Then again, you might just take it...)
Where is our Congress. Investigation. Yeah, right. Mukassey will get right on that I am sure.
How about calling his administration on the carpet of the House and Senate Chambers this weekend. Oh that right, we don't really have a Congress do we?
It is interesting that as soon as the NIE report came out on Iran being no threat, immediatly Bush says we need to have stiffer sanctions on them and gets Condoleeza working on that. That is exactly what he did when Democrats were elected to stop the occupation and bring the soldiers home. Right away, he announced the SURGE, and sent thousands more over to carry on his private war. Now of course, he and his fellow criminals are bent on discrediting the NIE findings, as if anything they have come up with in seven years was credible. Quite a democracy we have here!!
Wake up people! Bush is the employee of the corporate fascists, and he is doing a great job for them. It is useless to attack him! America has given up on democracy and is happy to live in a fascist state. They get all the cheap fuel and crap imported goods they need to keep them brain dead and unconcerned about the world that they inhabit.
The front row responsibility is yours, Helen; grab a handful of Dana's blonde hair and the room will be on her like kittens on a ball of yarn.
I'll bet the 'Bushie's' don't believe a word of it! Or they have come up with some excuse to cover the p....'s ass. Usually it's the 'Liberal Media' fault even though they know full well the media is 'right wing' anymore and just spoon-feeds the public what the White House wants to hear. Or they just moved their operation to Syria like Saddam did his. Or they needed to be taken out because they were the big bad boogie man. So I doubt Israel is the only warmongering idiot that doesn't believe a word of it. People like that defy all logical reason. Their brains function in another dimension. They have been spoon-fed that hate rhetoric where they can no longer think like normal human being. No doubt the same one the Scientologists live in.
The Bush response to the NIE report is remarkably similar to the creationists attitude to evolution.
Denial of reality is NEVER credible.
IT IS A MENTAL ILLNESS.
Bush has no credibility left to loose, but will the spineless democrats in congress allow him to do as he's done in the past? Will they allow this decidedly undemocratic regime in DC to simply make up their own facts and proceed as usual? We all know the majority of republicans will back their miserable leader because you can always count on a republican to do the partisan thing rather than the right thing. The real question is can we count on the democrats to do the right thing rather than the cautious thing. What will it take to get through to the dems that sometimes you really have to take a stand. Sometimes that's what is required to save your democracy. Will they take that stand and stick to it?
Let me answer my own question...NO! The dems won't take a stand. They're every bit as bad as the republicans, but for different reasons. I, and many other Americans, have lost all faith in our government. I know they dems don't have the votes to do most of what they want, but damn it THEY'RE IN THE MAJORITY!!!!!!! Would someone please let them in on that! They make the agenda in Congress! PLEASE DO SOMETHING! THAT'S WHY YOU WERE ELECTED!
And now the Dems are funding Bush's war
CURMUDGEON99 -- Please consider your context (and that of most) is fractured into the illusionary separation of "Bush's war".
It is only through 'the possibility of acceptance of what is' that the possibility of changing it is revealed and becomes available as a solution.
How about we take on the responsibility in our language used to discuss this war, not as if we're personally culpable for the decisions reached in DC, but from the point of view of empowerment.
What we resist does persist, especially when it comes to real acceptance of society's evil doings in war, genocide, and theft of resources.
The spiritual step is simple to take, but no so easy, and that is ownership of that distant war, so that we can feel and taste it in our teeth, and see the bloody trails our hand prints leave everywhere.
Bush may have started this war, but our complicity continues until we learn how to stop it and make reparations for the evil done in our name.

Love this, hakori; don't despair. :)
Never had credibility.
Just criminality.
Impeach Cheney, then Bush and let's get on with it! HR 799, where are you???
