Blackwater's Bu$ine$$
Gunning down seventeen Iraqi civilians in an incident the military has labeled "criminal." Multiple Congressional investigations. A federal grand jury. Allegations of illegal arms smuggling. Wrongful death lawsuits brought by families of dead employees and US soldiers. A federal lawsuit alleging war crimes. Charges of steroid use by trigger-happy mercenaries. Allegations of "significant tax evasion." The US-installed government in Iraq labeling its forces "murderers." With a new scandal breaking practically every day, one would think Blackwater security would be on the ropes, facing a corporate meltdown or even a total wipeout. But it seems that business for the company has never been better, as it continues to pull in major federal contracts. And its public demeanor grows bolder and cockier by the day.
Rather than hiding out and hoping for the scandals to fade, the Bush Administration's preferred mercenary company has launched a major rebranding campaign, changing its name to Blackwater Worldwide and softening its logo: once a bear paw in the site of a sniper scope, it's now a bear claw wrapped in two half ovals--sort of like the outline of a globe with a United Nations feel. Its website boasts of a corporate vision "guided by integrity, innovation, and a desire for a safer world." Blackwater mercenaries are now referred to as "global stabilization professionals." Blackwater's 38-year-old owner, Erik Prince, was No. 11 in Details magazine's "Power 50," the men "who control your viewing patterns, your buying habits, your anxieties, your lust.... the people who have taken over the space in your head."
In one of the company's most bizarre recent actions, on December 1 Blackwater paratroopers staged a dramatic aerial landing, complete with Blackwater flags and parachutes--not in Baghdad or Kabul but in San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium during the halftime show at the San Diego State/BYU football game. The location was interesting, given that Blackwater is fighting fierce local opposition to its attempt to open a new camp--Blackwater West--on 824 acres in the small rural community of Potrero, just outside San Diego. Blackwater's parachute squad plans to land at the Armed Forces Bowl in Texas this month and the Virginia Gold Cup in May. The company recently sponsored a NASCAR racer, and it has teamed up with gun manufacturer Sig Sauer to create a Blackwater Special Edition full-sized 9-millimeter pistol with the company logo on the grip. It comes with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. For $18, parents can purchase infant onesies with the company logo.
In recent weeks, Blackwater has indicated it might quit Iraq. "We see the security market diminishing," Prince told the Wall Street Journal in October. Yet on December 3 Blackwater posted job listings for "security specialists" and snipers as a result of its State Department diplomatic security "contract expansion." While its name may be mud in the human rights world, Blackwater has not only made big money in Iraq (about $1 billion in State Department contracts); it has secured a reputation as a company that keeps US officials alive by any means necessary. The dirty open secret in Washington is that Blackwater has done its job in Iraq, even if it has done so by valuing the lives of Iraqis much lower than those of US VIPs. That badass image will serve it well as it expands globally.
Prince promises that Blackwater "is going to be more of a full spectrum" operation. Amid the cornucopia of scandals, Blackwater is bidding for a share of a five-year, $15 billion contract with the Pentagon to "fight terrorists with drug-trade ties." Perhaps the firm will join the mercenary giant DynCorp in Colombia or Bolivia or be sent into Mexico on a "training" mission. This "war on drugs" contract would put Blackwater in the arena with the godfathers of the war business, including Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon.
In addition to its robust business in law enforcement, military and homeland security training, Blackwater is branching out. Here are some of its current projects and initiatives:
§Ã¢â‚¬Ë†Blackwater affiliate Greystone Ltd., registered offshore in Barbados, is an old-fashioned mercenary operation offering "personnel from the best militaries throughout the world" for hire by governments and private organizations. It also boasts of a "multi-national peacekeeping program," with forces "specializing in crowd control and less than lethal techniques and military personnel for the less stable areas of operation."
§Ã¢â‚¬Ë†Prince's Total Intelligence Solutions, headed by three CIA veterans (among them Blackwater's number two, Cofer Black), puts CIA-type services on the open market for hire by corporations or governments.
§Ã¢â‚¬Ë†Blackwater is launching an armored vehicle called the Grizzly, which the company characterizes as the most versatile in history. Blackwater intends to modify it to be legal for use on US highways.
§Ã¢â‚¬Ë†Blackwater's aviation division has some forty aircraft, including turboprop planes that can be used for unorthodox landings. It has ordered a Super Tucano paramilitary plane from Brazil, which can be used in counterinsurgency operations. In August the aviation division won a $92 million contract with the Pentagon to operate flights in Central Asia.
§Ã¢â‚¬Ë†It recently flight-tested the unmanned Polar 400 airship, which may be marketed to the Department of Homeland Security for use in monitoring the US-Mexico border and to "military, law enforcement, and non-government customers."
§Ã¢â‚¬Ë†A fast-growing maritime division has a new, 184-foot vessel that has been fitted for potential paramilitary use.
Meanwhile, Blackwater is deep in the camp of GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. Cofer Black is Romney's senior adviser on counterterrorism. At the recent CNN/YouTube debate, when Romney refused to call waterboarding torture, he said, "I'm not going to specify the specific means of what is and what is not torture so that the people that we capture will know what things we're able to do and what things we're not able to do. And I get that advice from Cofer Black, who is a person who was responsible for counterterrorism in the CIA for some thirty-five years." That was an exaggeration of Black's career at the CIA (he was there twenty-eight years and head of counterterrorism for only three), but a Romney presidency could make Blackwater's business under Bush look like a church bake sale.
In short, Blackwater is moving ahead at full steam. Individual scandals clearly aren't enough to slow it down. The company's critics in the Democratic-controlled Congress must confront the root of the problem: the government is in the midst of its most radical privatization in history, and companies like Blackwater are becoming ever more deeply embedded in the war apparatus. Until this system is brought down, the world's the limit for Blackwater Worldwide--and as its rebranding campaign shows, Blackwater knows it.

Show AllHow about Erik Prince (CEO of Blackwater Worldwide) for TIME magazine's "Person of the Year?"
There's no real justice, from Harper's:
Bush League Justice
I wonder what would happen if Al Queda offered Blackmurder a better deal to turn against our soldiers?
Simple solution....
You post the names and countries of original spawning for all the BushWhores and let the families of the victims of those foul swine contact 'em all for an "in depth" discussion on what in god's name coupled in the past to create such amoral, sub-human sewage. Unlike "our boys", this collection of Flotsam can't use ignorance, a need to "defend their country" or a really, really strong desire to go to college or cowardice in the face of a "lemming" public as an excuse to murder millions and, (thankfully), lose their souls
As for their "families",(do those that spawn a sub-species like them deserve to be given the title?), seeking monetary redress, why would you expect anything less from them? After all, the money murderers themselves wanted to make a buck off of murder. Shouldn't others in the "swarm" be allowed to make a buck off of the justice, oops, I mean death of their spawn? I hope the stench of these pigs reaches the lord quickly. and I hope I get to see Bush, cheney, Rice et al along with these maggots squeel like unruly children as perfect, final and absolute justice is meted out to them all

This is a good sentiment. It is the wisdom by which China has endured millenia of conquest and occupation without ever being assimilated. When we fight them with their methods (force, deceit, lies, and guile)we are playing their game and are destined to lose.
The surest way to undermine despots is to give them exactly what they want. As John Dalberg-Acton famously observed, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." For the lovers of freedom our greatest challenge is to not join our oppressors in the corruption of such power.
SH.SH.SH!MiMi!Big Brother reads everything...and your post has been duly noted, particularly because you are right smack in the middle of The Truth.

When the Taliban was first run off and the poppy crops were just about ready for harvest,it is a matter of record that BUSH SAVED those fields from destruction noting that the Afgans needed the income.
What you 'heard' is true.
And much much more.
Note to claudius:our fighting men and women do not 'like' Blackwater on several levels.
They have better equipment;vehicles,bullet-proof gear
They are paid 4 times the salary
They answer to no constraints that our military abide by
They are lawless killers
for openers.
They have been Bush's private army.
Bring our burned out,over-used,bone-tired,underpaid soldiers home and let Blackwater sit there in the middle of the civil war-without-end.
I think it's a swell idea, and we may see it happen if things keep going the way they are.
Last I heard, out military does not like the Blackwater mercenaries. I know this sounds like a bad idea but how about pitting our military against Blackwater mercenaries and let them fight it out?
It is truly disturbing to see Blackwater become the modern American version of the Congo Free State's Force Publique. As history has shown, such entities have in the long run, served the overall interests of the nation which they come from poorly & has produced a legacy of hatred that still exists in the Third World.
… if only the blackwater (translates to sewage) had even a smidgen of moral fiber, honor, and a code - as had the Samurai …
Perhaps they might turn as Ronin did, upon the already blood encrusted throat's of their pay masters, and provide swift and final justice?

urthsong: There is a compelling motivation for high profile people to surround themselves with armed bodyguards. Given the potential for militant opposition (nodding's clean, handy gun) I don't see why members of Congress would wish to cut off funding for the mercenaries who are best equipped to keep them alive. The chilling evolution of Blackwater is an inevitability written in human history. Guns (and "grizzleys, etc.) = power. Without them we are just naked apes, living in anarchy. The reason we don't rob banks is because if we did they would kill us. The reason we don't try to depose George Bush is because if we did they would kill us. The reason you do exactly what any armed cop tells you to do is because if you don't he will kill you. It's a simple thing, old as civilization and universally understood.
Never pick a fight with a pig. You'll get dirty, the pig will get dirty, and the pig will love it. Blackwater would love for us to get all revolutionary and try to make them disappear. Live free or die sounds viable when your oppressor is armed with black powder muskets, but get real here. The maintenance of despotic power is a booming science today, and we armchair minutemen are a bit behind the curve.
I don't suggest that we not use every political means at our disposal for forestall a police state. We should voice our alarm, convince others, vote, write, rant, whatever. But if Mr. Scahill is to be believed, the prognosis is not looking good.
May I suggest, perhaps sadly, that there are other reasons for living besides political empowerment. Our boy Mitt the other day said a strange thing. He said that you can't have religion without freedom and you can't have freedom without religion. But Mitt's boy Jesus emerged in the midst of the nastiest, most repressive foreign occupation in history. And the Reformation was not exactly freedom's finest hour either. People are born in such times - times when insisting on your freedom and dignity could get you nailed to a tree - the kind of times our children may be in for - and yet individuals from such periods still make it into the history books. They achieve wisdom. They write music. They enjoy the other perks of humanity.
I think Blackwater's hour is coming. They are ascendent, and in a time of diminishing resources and hungry warlords we are in for a bad spell for the foreseeable future. They will be the arm that pushes us around. If Ghandi were here he might suggest, like the t'ai chi master, that we not give them anything to push against.
"Blackwater mercenaries are now referred to as "global stabilization professionals."
Well atleast that sounds more palitable than "global stabilization professional war criminals"
How appropriate that at a BYU footall game Blackslaughter would provide the halftime entertainment.
When Eric "Mercenary Murderer" Prince says Blackslaughter may quit Iraq ""We see the security market diminishing..." what he really means is Blackslaughter is gonna get out before war crimes charges are "allowed" by a new administration.
jeremy, blackwater aptly named as they are blackguard...blackguard same definition as=reprobate.they are going down, hopefully now...but if not now, they certainly will, later.keep applying the pressure..dont give up !(thank you)
Leave it to Bush to allow this people to stay on. When they have proven themselves to be nothing but a bunch of government sanctioned thugs and criminals. Something far to close to what the SS in Germany used to be. Is there no end to his crimes against the American people? But, it's going to take more than a few paratroopers putting on a show to remove the stench from the Blackwater name. If it would have been me I would have gotten up and made certain everyone in the vicinity knew I was leaving with utter disgust.
Congress needs to stop funding the mercenaries. If the Pinkertons could be prohibited from employment by the US government in 1892, the mercenary organizations certainly could be now. Why don't we hear anything about Schmitz, the Chief Operations Officer of the Prince Group, parent of Blackwater, who is the brother-in-law of Jeb Bush? Blackwater in New Orleans following Katrina was a dress rehearsal. Does anybody have links telling what they did during that dress rehearsal?
"Blackwater mercenaries are now referred to as "global stabilization professionals."
You've got to hand it to the spinmeisters : one would be hard put to come up with more 'creative' jargon.
What next- 'cosmic stabilization professionals' perhaps.
It is said the US government is the single biggest illegal drug lord on the planet. It is over a 600 billion dollar a year industry and the money is used to fund special ops programs off budget, among other things. Much of the money is said to end up back in the US where it is laundered and invested. The recession in 2002 was said to be in part a result of the Taliban crackdown on poppy production in 2001 which dried up the opium supply and drug profits. Fortunately, the US came to the rescue and poppy production is up dramatically, and so the markets have recovered.
I do not how true that is but if you think we are letting terrorists get all that money you are nuts.
Ask yourself, wouldn't you think the huge amounts of money spent in the GWOT would also help knock the socks off the drug smuggling in the War on Drugs. After all, the profits from this trade have to be laundered in the same way that terrorists financed their operations pre-9/11 and we have pretty much eliminated that, not to mention increased border security on cargo coming in by air and sea in Europe and North America. Yet from all accounts drugs are widely available in Europe and North America.
Blackwater should be probably be paying us for the rights to participate in the War on Drugs in Afghanistan. Some have speculated Blackwater is being groomed for covert operations that in the past have been done by CIA and the Military to avoid congressional oversight. Others suspect it is being groomed to be a private militia who can take over from the National Guard in the event of martial law. Could be both. In either case, they will be adequately funded from their drug profits.
One thing history tells us, every Fascist government that has ever taken power uses a private militia to help maintain control when the critters awaken. Maybe we can call it the Party of God.
I think that maybe Blackwater should take over all military operations for the US. Then Blackwater can overcharge to their hearts content, and America can start paying the real price for their brain dead and murderous greed that is spreading all over the earth. Then the American middle class will have some good high paying killing jobs, and can steal all the natural resources they need to continue their disgusting over consumptive life styles.
We are so fortunate to have a Christian organization like Blackwater helping us spread peace and goodwill around the world. All of those terrorist Muslems better quit that silly religion of theirs and stsrt appreciating what Blackwater is doing for them if they know what is good for them.
For all the nature buffs out there: Blackwater's logo looks a lot more like a wolverine track than a bear track. If only the Blackwater mercenaries could use the wolverine's cunning and tenacity to conquer their inner demons and become people of peace....Wouldn't that be delightful?
Republican jack-booted thugs on our doorstep. I wonder if they have any satelite photos of me feeding the birds?
@ imagineusa:your local law enforcement can't wait to start recruiting....
just one minute here. sorry to be the bearer of bad news....
BUT(!)...
part of the blackwater force are US law enforcement, as well as former US military....
when we start acknowledging where blackwater recruits its force from, the sooner this country might eat crow?
Do they have nukes yet?
Luckily we have this protective outfit, last I heard, our military was broken.
You are looking at the future of law enforcement in the good old USA. Your local law enforcement can't wait to start recruiting former Blackwater mercenaries.

Ah, patriotism! ain't it wunnerful?
Fa la la la la, la la la la ...
Intelligence solutions? An aviation and maritime division? Can this become any more scary? I agree that they are little more than a terrorist organisation funded by he US taxpayer. They will become so integrated with the government that you will never be able to separate them.
That's it! I've had enough! I'm colonizing Mars, who's with me? I know it's pretty cold there, but there's no mention of a Blackwater Space Division(yet) we might be safe there(for a while).
Hey, any idea where the billion dollars in lost arms went? heh, heh
vinlander, that's the beauty of mercenaries. If you've got the cash, they'll do what they're told.
Come to think of it, that's not too different from the Bush administration.
Mitt Romney is in this too?
His church has a lot of money.
Maybe the Mormon and Methodists(the Bush tyeps) get together and Bomb the rest of the world, assasinate whom they don't like.
Then they definitely will bring peace to the world.
and justify calling themsleves peacekeepers.
this is amerikkka's al qaieda
Who says there is no Christian Terrorist organization?
Blackwater is a home grown and trained Christian Fundamentalist Terrorist Organization funded by US admin and taxpayers.
Hypothetical question time: Could a multi-billionaire hire Blackwater to kick the Israelis out of Palestine?
It's too bad that Robert Hawkins was killed. He would've had a great job opportunity with Blackwater.
Blackwater is launching an armored vehicle called the Grizzly, which the company characterizes as the most versatile in history. Blackwater intends to modify it to be legal for use on US highways.
I wonder why? (and really, as if they care if it's 'legal'...)
