Man Hitting Road to Lobby on Impeachment
BRATTLEBORO, Vt. - John Nirenberg has waterproof sneakers, a bright yellow poncho and a plan. He also has outrage in his heart and much of his retirement savings tied up in his cause.
The 60-year-old author and academic plans to walk from Boston to Washington, D.C., to confront House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in hopes of persuading Congress to take up the impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney.
Nirenberg says he's no activist. He hates snow, cold and darkness. He's not even sure he'll make a difference, but he's going to try.
He plans to hit the road Sunday, leaving from Faneuil Hall and walking 15 miles a day until he gets to Capitol Hill, stopping at the Statue of Liberty, Independence Hall and other symbolic locations as he makes his way to the U.S. Capitol.
Wearing a "Save the Constitution, Impeach Bush and Cheney," sandwich-board style sign, Nirenberg hopes to rally support for an issue Pelosi has said is no longer on the table.
"This is about satisfying my conscience. I just don't want to be the guy who says in five years that I regret not having stood up and said something.
"With a name like Nirenberg, you're very sensitive to that kind of environment," he said, referring to the post-World War II Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals.
Nirenberg, a New York native who was a member of the Civil Air Patrol as youth and later served in the U.S. Air Force, was a social studies teacher, college professor and organizational consultant.
A former dean at the School for International Training, in Brattleboro, he has also written three books.
In October, frustrated by what he sees as constitutional abuses by the Bush administration, Nirenberg decided to "activate my citizenship" and do something about it.
He settled on marching, set up a Web site and made cards, pencils and literature in support of his plan.
He has accepted donations and plans to wear the names of his supporters on yellow 6-by-24-inch panels hanging off his body as traverses U.S. 1 through eight states and into the District of Columbia, walking six hours a day.
With one supporter riding along in a car and another occasionally walking with him, Nirenberg plans to stop for events with anti-war and impeachment advocates along the way.
Among them is Stuart Hutchison, 49, an actor and producer from Wayne, N.J., who is trying to organize a Statue of Liberty event with Nirenberg while he treks south.
"People like him are the real heroes," said Hutchison, an impeachment activist. "These are the people who are going to save this country."
Nirenberg, who is unaffiliated with any impeachment organization, says people who have heard about his march have been supportive.
"I can't believe what's already happened, and I haven't even started walking," he said Friday. "People are calling me, and they're having a send-off and a bunch of people want to organize a turnout at Faneuil Hall for me. I didn't even pursue this."
Nirenberg said his idealism, which he concedes sounds "almost Jimmy Stewart-ish," just might persuade Pelosi that America supports impeachment.
He planned to send her a letter before he leaves to let her know he's coming.
Pelosi, through a spokesman, didn't directly comment on Nirenberg's venture.
"The New Direction Congress will continue building a record of progress for the American people - holding the Bush administration accountable, restoring fiscal discipline to Washington and investing in our national priorities," spokesman Nadeam Elshami said.
"If they can rise above strategy and spin and focus on the principles of what America's all about, they will get the overwhelming support of the public in `08, which is what they're really concerned about," Nirenberg said.

Show AllI have to go to his site and donate. John will be at Independence Hall, I am from Philly, if he is there while I am not in France, trying to get the Proscuter, Marin, to open an investigation against Rumsfeld for Torture.
John I'll meet you at 5th and Market, we will eat and you will sleep at my home and I will join you on the walk to convince that miserable Pelosi, I shall be gentle.
A TRUE PATRIOT!!!
ESSKAY744 -- So true, my apologies. I made a mistake and after a web search I've updated it, but there is also a few things different from what you say is the actual quote.
Namaste … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … … Mahatma Gandhi … … … … … … … … … …
« We must be the change we wish to see in the world »
« There is a sufficiency in the world for man's need but not for man's greed »

the correct quote is -"There is enough for everyone's need but not enough for even one man's gteed"
Like I have said, impeachment is off the table because
chimpy and the dick and the rest of the circus will be up for criminal charges AFTER they are out of office. NO PARDONS. If they are impeached, they will still have enough time to come up with another out, marshall law, nucking Iran, collapsing the economy....
Folks. I know I don't do enough for any of the causes and purposes I believe in. Mr. Nirenberg is someone who appears truly to be walking his talk. And now he is walking in my name, too. I just donated $50 through his website. The link has been mentioned above, but if you can give a few dollars, go there now and support a true grassroots effort at waking up our sleeping Congress. http://www.marchinmyname.org/
Denny, that would be great but the jerks we now have in Washington have made laws at midnight that stop us from filing a lawsuit against them. In fact -- if you or I broke the laws they break we would be put to death by the HomeLand Security Nazis.
Thanks to Peace Pilgrim, Granny D, Dr. John Nirenberg, Mahatma Ghandi and others who walk the walk. I will email this link to my people. Any of you with European, Indian, Australian, etc. contacts can send this worldwide! The Guardian would post it.
Thank you John for taking the initiative. I am 89 years old and if I lived back East, I would join you for whatever distance I could cover! GOOD LUCK
Billy__y4, Great idea. we can all join and support this walk by joining as Lohn passes by our neighborhoods. peace out and in! Impeach for Peace!
americans should have a class action lawsuit against the us gov't for all the misery they have bestowed upon all beings world wide, we should have a day in court with these miserable wretches and take the case to wherever the court system will allow domestic or international.
His tactics are working already as John Conyers has been able to put down his calculator, no not for the Constitution, but for the book he wrote prior to the 2006 elections.
At the annual Peace and Justice Banquet in Detroit, there to receive the Harry Crane award (with Rep. Barbara Lee in the house to receive than Maryann Mahaffy award), Conyers never uttered the impeachment word, yet set a serious tone based on the urgency of the day for carrying out discussions on what to do at this historic point in history. While down playing Scott Ritter's April 2008 alarm, Conyers stated we were at a crisis point and need to think thoroughly about the implications of the actions we could take.
To explore possible action Conyers is to hold public hearings on the implications of "proceedings" based on "his book"; even naming an aide who would record testimony regarding "implications of proceedings" claiming he wanted to hear from anyone with a desire to express themselves on possible "proceedings".
Here is a promising development!

Keep on truckin!
Don't expect to see him on CNN's (The Cowardly News Network) "Heroes". But that's beside the point. This man is my hero. God bless him!
Thanks, John. you're a true vermont hero. you're doing what none of our representatives are doing.
Parents:
Instead of tracking the highly materialistic Santa on the tv or internet, we should have regular updates on this hero's progress and explain to the children how important his march is to each and everyone of us.
Here's an uplifting video from a demonstration during a speech Ashcroft gave at Cornell this past week:
100 Walk Out on John Ashcroft Speech
by Pamela Leavey
December 1st, 2007 @ 12:47 pm
About 13 minutes into former attorney general John Ashcroft's speech at Cornell University's Statler Hall a couple of days ago, "more than 100 students and Ithaca community members stood up from their seats, turned their backs to Ashcroft and placed black shrouds over their heads. The protesters stood in silence for another 14 minutes before walking out of his speech together."

I'm cooking (no pun) up the idea of meeting John and his entourage here in Old Saybrook, CT for a Pot Luck/BYOB event. Need to check out his itinerary to see if it's feasible.
Enjoy the above video. It's worth passing on...
Yup! The change comes from everyday people. Real change always has! Pelosi is an absurb figure as is almost anyone trying to hold-on to the folly of power no one really ever has. It is indeed absurd not to pursue impeachment of horrible figures who exploit the world in the darkest and black-hearted of manners. Hell, after impeachment -- any civil society would want to put these clowns on international trial for crimes against humanity and decency and life.
I went to the wbsite and emailed the contact person with my suggestion and volunteered to do any emailing if I had a list of stations. There must be any number of ways to particpate in this effort. We just need to get creative!
Just what I needed during this blustery winter storm here in WI. It warms my heart!
WILLYBILL----I would love to walk with him, but I can't walk at all these days. I'd love to send him $50 like you did ABBEYWOOD but I am living on a very small disability check. I will just have to send him my profound gratitude and a big dollop of LOVE. It would be so wonderful to see a groundswell of people marching with him. I think notifying the smaller market media sources (local radio and TV)along his itinerary is as effctive as anything for getting the word out---SCREW the MSM----more people have the potential to learn about this one small market at a time, and he will be BIG NEWS in most of them, if they get a heads up. That would be a great way to participate. Perhaps whoever is (wo)maning his website has some job assignments, and can find out phone numbers of local radio and TV stations.
I've emailed CNN and ABC News, giving them the hot tip on this story. Let's see if any of the networks cover this. Unless it makes it on a nightly news broadcast (and more than once) it'll be like the proverbial tree falling in the forest . . . . I applaud his effort.
I'm so glad he's doing this. I will go to his web site and arrange a donation. What if there were more marches like this, all over the country? How else to make it crystal clear that this president should be forced to leave BEFORE 01/20/09?
I gave him 50 bucks this morning and joined the blog.
Now all we need is another 999,999 people to give 50 bucks and we'll meet the goal!!
We should pick a destination for about two weeks from now in a community he'll be going through and have a giant POT LUCK in his honor!
Maybe we could find a good Unitarian Church with a big basement or a big restaurant to contribute the space? $5/person and BYOB
I'll make the vegetarian curry soup. What are you guys bringing?!
If John Nirenberg were to convince 1 million people
to subscribe for $50 each, he'd raise 50 million, which is
excessive even for lotto jackpots - and those stories always make
the news

abbybwood,
go to http://www.marchtogetherinmyname.org/ for more info on sending food to him.
Thank you John.
Here's the link to see his route. It has exact details of every street and turn.
You can make a donation here:

The only hope this guy has of making a difference is if the press falls in love with his cause. So far, they yawn or ridicule this type of story.
If we knew his route, we could flood the local press with requests for coverage.
The press would be more likely to cover his journey if others joined him or people lined his route to cheer him.
All I want for X-mas is to be in that MARCH!
BLACKWATER ONE, THIS IS BLACKWATER TWO - HAVE YOU
LOCATED THE NIRENBERG NUT YET?
Blackwater Two: "Yea, we got 'im in sight with one of the blimp cameras. Looks like 'Granny D' on steroids."
Blackwater One: "What's he doing?"
Blackwater Two: "He's walking down the street in the middle of a crowd, just like that case study we did in class using those old films of Granny D - "How to Identify a Homegrown Terrorist - First Look for Campaign Reform."
Blackwater One: "This is way more serious than we were told in the briefing. Wasn't he expected to jabber away harmlessly on the internet about impeachment or whatever? This guy could actually threaten our source of funding."
Blackwater Two: "Well yeah, that's what the first consultant said. But then a second consultant who just received a two million dollar contract under HR1955/S1959 confirmed he fit the profile of a "Homegrown Terrorist" and may actually engage in the use of a PUBLIC SPACE to hold up HAND-HELD signs that INCITE THOUGHT REACTIONS from those that read them."
Blackwater One: "Wow, it's a good thing we were trained specifically for these type events in our special compounds. Imagine all those ordinary local police on foot and bikes thinking they could control such a dangerous situation like this. They're so backward, they think "situational awareness" means protecting the demonstrators. Only experts like us for $1,500/day could possibly cut through the "fog of free speech" and act to surgically suppress the explicit danger at hand without harming the vast majority of patriotic citizens.
Blackwater Two: "Ok One, calm down, you're starting to sound like Tom Tomorrow here. So what's the intel on this guy?"
Blackwater One: "The medical records show he's been consuming Big Pharma products for years, which is why he's mentally ill and bankrupt. The street cameras show he's been consuming Big Ag products for years, which is why he's got cancer. The AT&T records show he's been consuming Big Tele across many calling circles, which is why he's on a terrorist watch list. The Big Media records show he's been watching Democracy Now ...
Blackwater Two: "Ok, I've heard enough, we're going to Defcon Two on this one, I repeat, Defcon Two ... Full Immunity and Freerange Status ... I'll meet you in the helicopter in five minutes with the processed uranium vacuum cleaner built originally for Granny D ..."
Finally!
An ordinary hero that is not a hero.
An ordinary leader who is not a leader.
An unknown person, who puts all others
to shame.
There might be hope for America yet!
And not one comment so far from any paid
trolls or detractors!! Must be a record!

Thanks lilly for the heads up on John Nirenberg's website where there's a blog and a great video by him!

It's good to be from Vermont - particularly Brattleboro! It's time to follow our lead, people - a revolution is becoming more and more inevitable.
You have to love the guy!
check out his website that is on his signs in the picture: march in my name dot org
Go for it John! One Vermonter to another, cheering you on!
does anyone know how to contact this guy or what his itinerary is? i will join him for NY or NJ if I can find out
One man out of 300 million!! Why oh why are we not out there with this HERO? Other obligations? Too much debt? Too much TV? Hubris? Fear? Christmas season? No time? Resignation? Sore feet? Too cold? Embarrassment? Don't worry, it'll all work out! Yeah, right. I am ashamed of myself and all of us for letting this man WALK ALONE.
A Hero.
I hope he posts his schedule and route so that others may show support and solidarity by walking a mile with him.
Pelosi's "comment" sets a new standard for cynicism, arrogance, and rank bullshit.
Maybe we should start by demanding the recall of every member of Congress that refuses to hold Bush accountable for his astonishing record of violence, lawlessness and thievery - and it is increasingly clear we had better start with Pelosi.
On October 23, 2007, by a vote of 404 to 6, the U.S. House of Representatives, under Pelosi's inspired leadership, approved HR 1955: The Violent Radicalization and Homegrown Terrorism Prevention Act of 2007. This shocking piece of legislation designates every American who acts -- OR PROMOTES ACTION -- against the U.S. Government to be a TERRORIST.
I suppose this brave man will be one of the first on the hit list, right, Nancy? Thanks for protecting Bush. We are long past aware that we can't count on you to protect the citizens of this country.
Call your senator. This shocking bill hasn't gone through the Senate yet - there may still be time to hold it up.
What a tragedy for this country that the Democratic party is controlled by the same corporations that back Bush.
PLEASE tell us where we can send a check and some hot soup!
I would love to have my name on one of his panels listing me as a supporter!
