Karl Rove's Shameless, Remorseless, Soulless Attempt to Rewrite History
I went on Countdown last night to talk about what Keith Olbermann called Karl Rove's "attack on history."Too political? For Karl Rove? That's like saying something was too bloody for Count Dracula.
He went on to paint a picture of a White House pushed into war, and laid the blame for much of what has happened since on a Congress that had "made things move too fast." If not for Congress, you see, there would have been more time for weapons inspections, and to build a broader coalition.
It was a satiric tour de force worthy of Jonathan Swift or Stephen Colbert -- but Rove wasn't joking. He actually expected us to buy his load of b.s. Watching Rove, two things were perfectly clear: his disdain for the truth and his contempt for the American people know no bounds.
Rove's appearance was the work of a shameless, remorseless, soulless political animal taking the first steps on what will no doubt be a high profile and lucrative march toward historical revisionism. He knows that he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the fanatics responsible for the worst foreign policy disaster in American history -- not exactly the best thing to put on your post-government resume -- so he is hell-bent on replacing reality with the latest incarnation of The Big Lie.
A student of history, Rove is obviously also up on his Orwell: "Who controls the past, controls the future."
Unfortunately for Rove, this isn't 1984; we now live in the Age of Google, and YouTube, and Lexis-Nexis searches. So the refutation of his lies is just a click away.
The evidence that it was President Bush and Vice President Cheney -- and not Congress -- who were hungry for war is overwhelming. For starters, we have Bush's own words before the vote, when he explicitly told Congress that "it's in our national interest" to get the vote "done as quickly as possible." And the insistence of then-Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld that "delaying a vote in Congress would send the wrong message." And the words of then-Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle who says that when he asked Bush in September 2002 why there was such a rush for a vote on Iraq the president "looked at Cheney and he looked at me, and there was a half-smile on his face. And he said: 'We just have to do this now.'"
And there is the insider evidence provided by Richard Clarke, who wrote that within hours of the 9/11 attacks, this administration had its heart set on heading into Iraq. And from Paul O'Neill, who made it clear that invading Iraq had been Bush's goal before he had even learned where the Oval Office supply closet was.
Even now, with his approval ratings scraping the bottom of the historical barrel, Bush still dominates the Congressional agenda on the war. And Rove wants us to buy that back in the heady days of 2002, when the president was still riding a wave of support forged by 9/11, his desire for caution and reasoned action were overridden by a war hungry Congress? "We don't determine when the Congress votes on things," Rove told Rose. "The Congress does." I guess he and Bush landed on the whole "I'm the Decider" thing later (maybe after they orchestrated that triumphal landing on the Abraham Lincoln).
The truth is that the zealots in the White House were not about to allow their desires to invade Iraq -- which had been laid out years earlier by the Project for a New American Century -- be quashed by anything as piddling as the facts or the evidence or reasoned debate or Congress. Especially a Congress populated with Democratic leaders so rattled and timid that to call them spineless would be an insult to invertebrates everywhere.
Indeed, it was the perfect political environment for an administration intent on shoving a war down the throats of Congress and the American people.
Let's remember, this was the time when the administration had pulled together the White House Study Group (which included Rove himself) with the express mission of marketing the war. These people weren't in the mood to wait, they were in the mood to sell, sell, sell. The Downing Street Memo showed that by July of 2002 they were already fixing the intel to sell the war. By August 2002 the White House was already using Judy Miller and the New York Times as prime advertising space. And by September 2002, Condi Rice was already warning of smoking guns turning out to be mushroom clouds, and Cheney was using aluminum tubes to make the case that Saddam was "actively and aggressively seeking to acquire nuclear weapons."
So the record is irrefutable: the drumbeat of war coming from the White House couldn't have been louder. And no amount of 5-years-down the road spinning by Karl Rove is going to change that truth.

Show AllAh...ya gotta love George's favorite little pet...the man who might have inspired the phrase "fascist pig"...he even resembles a swine...If there were any justice in this world, he'd be standing at the gates of Hell with rope burns around his neck.
Does this really surprise anyone?
The scariest part about it is that I can see this working for a few decades. All the people who supported Bush are more than desperate to find a way out. Soon, all those "Four More Years!" folks will be blaming the entire Iraq war on a Democratic Congress. Hans Blix was the UN voice calling for the head of Hussein. Oh yeah... and Wolfowitz, Rumsfield, and Ashcroft were Clinton appointees.
The only people who will ever be shown the truth are our great, great-grandchildren when they see documentaries on the Discovery channel in 50 years...if there is a Discovery channel in 50 years that is.
Hope we can make it long enough...so that we can see the day that it becomes accepted public knowledge.
Rove and his ilk, I'm afraid, might succeed in pushing it several decades off.
If you think Rove is bad, you should have listened to John Yoo on Frontline's "Spying in America" series on Tuesday night. This guy is really an incredible nut case!
Pigs are awesome. Intelligent, benign. Rove's problem is he is all too human.
The unfortunate germ of truth in Rove's lie is that Congress has been fully complicit all along by surrending its war powers to the president and refusing to investigate American war crimes, occupation blunders, and contractor corruption. "Our" Democrats in Washington share Bush's goals for an American imperium in Iraq.
Rove and Bob "The Traitor" Novak should be in a prison cell for betraying the country, not walking about free making money off of their crimes.
Remember how the White House sent Colin Powell to the U.N. to make the case for war. His bits and pieces of so called evidence did not add up to the conclusion that Bush wanted, but they pushed it anyway.
Exactly!
That's where impeachment should begin, when Powell was sent to the UN to lie about WMD. !!!
You mean the Discovery Channel that helped put out the disinformation that the WTC centers exploded into vast clouds of concrete dust and collapsed in 9 seconds due to fire and gravity? When even the official government NIST report doesn't come out and make that claim?
That is how FOX was used to spread the disinformation that Iraq was linked to 9-11, when Bush was careful never to directly make that claim himself.
I certainly wouldn't count on them to straighten out the historical record in 50 years.
John R. Hall,
Rotten dot com's library describes Karl Rove's appearance as a cross between Sesame Street's Mr. Hooper and the Third Reich's Heinrich Himmler.

I will probably eat my own words at some point in the future, but Karl Rove was one of a kind (and not in a good way). It will be a long, long time before we ever see the likes of him again in American politics. Yes, we will see evil and crooked partisans shamelessly lying and racebaiting, but few will have the talent to sink effortlessly from the gutter into the sewer the way Rove did.
Sounds like all them war mongers are now feeling their collars tightening on their necks and realize that feeling may be the nooses being placed their for war crimes
You might have too much faith in the system Jonno. Sure, Bush and his oligarchs might give up Rove to satisfy the masses, but they're not giving up their power and the wealth they stole from us nor are they about to change the system.
Not even the most misinformed of the American public could possibly buy this one. I think. I hope.
Thomas J. Comer
Carl Rove would not have been able to accomlish any of his most famous lies and spins had not all of the news networks repeated them word for word as fact over and over again. He had the best microphone a chronic liar could have.
John R. Hall & Big Bad Bob:
Your rhetoric is almost as scary as the warmongering Administration's. You are either unafraid of the thought police and just using hyperbole or you are actually favoring violence.
If you are not afraid of the thought police, please read this other item from CommonDreams:
http://www.commondreams.org/archive/2007/11/19/5320/
At any rate, I don't think it helps to use violent language since it makes us sound as hateful as the Bush Cabal. I for one will not let them bring me down to their despicable level.
I do believe that Karl Rove is a liar and should face criminal charges for treason.
Thanks for listening to my two cents!

Why, that lyin' sack of Rove!
To whoever mentioned John Yoo above: You have no idea what a depraved degenerate this guy is. Mr. Torture's now busy trying to get out of any impending war crime trials and, at the same time, trying to deny professors at the University of California tenure who are not certifiable fascists.
That little interview of Rove in which he said what Arianna is describing here was a test-run for how Rove sees w's presidential library. I wonder, will Rove include in this library/museum of the w administration accomplishments the fact that the rest of the world totally misunderstands them and wrongly holds them responsible for things not turning out as planned? And if he does, how will he pull this one off?
A good article. It's hard always to recapitulate but necessary. I wonder if Rove will have a Jimmy Swaggart moment some day like Rove's college roommate Lee Atwater, who, dying from brain cancer, accurately confessed (in only slightly different words): "I was a big jerk."
Do any of these craven liars ever go to a workingman's hangout bar and try to pass this crap off as truth?
"Are you going to believe me...or your lyin' eyes?" (Geraldo)
We all saw Scott Ritter and Hans Blix about 4 or 5 years ago talking about needing more time.
Hey, we forgot that Bush put Karl Rove in charge of the rebuilding of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast! Ain't he done a heck of a job? And not ONE STINKING "journalist" ever mentions this....
The sad, appalling thing is that neocon nut-jobs like Podhoretz, Rove, Wolfowitz, Gonzales, Yoo, Perle, Feith, Robertson, Dobson, Lieberman, DeLay et al. still have credibility with a substantial segment of the US population--and electorate. The Republican candidates, with the exception of the marginal Ron Paul, are still hewing to their line and the voters are loving it. The economic, military, legal, constitutional and environmental catastrophes they have wrought will trouble our children and grandchildren. It's high time we regarded them as the frauds, incompetents, crooks, liars and human rights criminals they are.
just an add on ...last nite's Nite Line on ABC,,,(ALL Bulshit Channel)-
Condaliar Rice was on, and what straight bullshit , and lies, when asked directly, about WMD's and the rush to war,,,,She is just as in need of rope burn as the rest of the US Treasury marauders as the rest of the insider trading War profiteers, in OUR White House,,, this just in... Bush Says .."dictatorships aren't bad, as long as I"m the Dictator..." Great words coming from the man who stole elections in the once greatest democratic country,!!!!
Hey all,
Good article consisting of an interview with Chuck Hagel. This guy is one pissed off senator! Earlier today, he slammed Bush, claiming that this is the worst Administration since Vietnam, perhaps ever, among other visceral criticisms. Interestingly, that brief article on the MSM disappeared. However, if you go to this webaddress, there is a good interview where he reveals many truths (some of which we already are aware). It is:
men.style.com/gq/features/landing?id=content_5326
If you cannot get the article from that webaddress, go to GQ Magazine, type in Chuck Hagel, and part of the article's title is "The Angry One." Click on it and you should be able to access the interview. This guy is ready to call Bush out! Finally!!!
Maybe now Leahy will get Rove under oath, there's still opportunity to hold him accountable for his actions.
What would happen if you crossed Karl Rove with a pig?
Nothing, there are some things a pig will not do.
Putting Karl Rove under oath and actually telling the truth would cause a rift in the space time continuum.
next thing you know, assholes like rove, limbaugh, and the heads of the MSM, will be saying that the document PNAC, doesn't even exist. it was just a fabrication of all those hollywood libs. there going to have to make room on rushmore, for that great american hero, george bush.
I did not actually see the interview (speaking of Jon Swift) but if Rove is saying, "If not for Congress, you see, there would have been more time for weapons inspections", it sounds as if he aknowledges that Hussein had allowed the weapons inspectors to return to Iraq which contradicts the lies Bush has told about this.

For years before 911, Karl was laughing up his sleeve as the neo-cons planned their "response" to the "The New Pearl Harbor" and they could hardly wait for the domination of mid east oil and the institution of "free market ideology" in Iraq,
If a few poor souls had to leap to their death as the Towers were being blown out from underneath them, so be it.
If several thousand of our country's best and most brave had to spill their blood for a lie, so be it.
If hundreds of thousands of Iraq's citizens had to die, so be it.
If millions of Iraq's citizens were displaced, so be it.
If we as a country have abandoned any sense of human decency in the process, so be it.
If the Karl's cherished buddy Bush calls our constitution "just a damn piece a paper" in response to a legal question, so be it.
If the Congress says impeachment is off the table, so be it.
If Karl now says poor W was rushed into a War he didn't want, so be it.
Hmmm....
How did we get in this hand basket and were are we going?
The only thing I disagree with in this article is the assertion that Google, Youtube, and Lexus-Nexus act as a brake on the manufacturers of consent. You must have people capable of critical thought and independent spirit to resist the push of the hegemonists. Unfortunately, we have only a small minority in our society who qualify.
Is Karl Rove any different from Bill Clinton, who himself rewrote history, saying he's always been against the Iraq war? Democrats and Republicans, scummy pigs joined at the hip.
Each nation has the government it deserves.
I have a funny feeling that impeachment of these jerk-offs is off the table because criminal charges are going to be brought up as soon as these assholes are out of office.
mcpete
We can only hope. How sweet would that be.
Karl Rove is probably getting ready to jump on the speech band wagon like fonzo. Yeah, he does look something like a pig. But I always thought he looked like some imaginary figure in a Bat Man sequel as he could figure prominently as the Pig Man but then Rush Limbaugh has that title, pig man. A lot of Bush supporters will buy his lies and put the blame of Iraq on the Democrats. What else can one expect from Bush supporters who are anxious to cover their stupidity on lies, more lies, and lying mouths of one such as pig man Rove And Limbaugh. Can you believe Rush is still on the radio and has so many foolish followers?
I take issue with the notion that the Invasion of Iraq "the worst foreign policy disaster in American history". It was a huge disaster, BUT....my bet is over time a more comprehensive historical perspective will show that a prime candidate for the "worst foreign policy disaster in American history" will be the NOW 4-DECADES LONG COWARDLY FAILURE OF THE US GOVERNMENT TO USE ITS ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL POWER TO REIGN IN ZIONIST TERRITORIAL EXPANSION. And, we Americans aren't finished paying the piper for supporting militant Zionist ambitions in the West Bank. Repeated Congresses, repeated Presidents, have utterly failed the ordinary people of this country. We died on the Liberty, we died in Lebanon, we died in the World Trade Center, we are dying in Iraq. All for Israel's lust for the West Bank. Read "Overcoming Zionism" and you will see what I mean.
I almost fell out of my easy chair when this little tidbit came on the screen during Keith's show! I was screaming so loud my husband asked me what was the matter. He almost had a stroke too when I told him what I had just heard! We were some of the ones who listened in disgust as President Bush carped for months about the need to invade Iraq in 2002. They had weapons of mass destruction and were a threat to the world...blah...blah...blah! Now to blame the Democratic Congress for pushing Bush into a war he didn't want is the height of arrogance. There are no words to describe the audacity it takes for someone to indulge in this form of behavior! For one thing, the Republican's were in control of Congress then as well as the Senate. The Democrat's didn't push anything. It's unbelievable the depths of the slime pond these people emerged from! These hacks invented spin! That was spin at it's worst! Even the Bushie's can't be dumb enough to buy that load of crap? But, I doubt it will change any of their minds. When people have blinders on it rarely ever does. I still have a hard time believing the man said it! But, I heard him on television.
Not having a TV, I did not witness this interview, but found it strange that there was no mention of Olberman's reaction to these assertions. Did he burst out laughing hysterically? Did he suggest Rove find a good analyst to help him learn to make appropriate distinctions between reality, and how Rove would...er...spin it? Surely no self respecting human being could hear this and treat it as anything but what it was.
I'm not letting the Congress off the hook---they surely offered little to no resistence, but to suggest that they were at the forefront of beating the war drums is....I donn't even know what to call it?
Maybe Rove knows something we don't know about mind control techniques currently in operation----American's retention of memory has been reduced to let's say----3 years???? I know, I know----plenty of evidence that is way too optimistic...still....does Rove think he has that much power to shape perceptions? Has he been re-reading all those glowing profiles of his political genius? thinking he is capable of just about anything?
Orwell---what a visionary----and even his timing wasn't that far off. Remember the Reagan years? Lots of this crap started then. Just a smoother delivery system.
STAR -- How could you denigrate mere slime and compare it to Rove?
Rove is a smart political fighter. He noticed all the daylight the Dem's were giving on impeachment and surmised he might provoke them into moving off their game plan. Making the Dem's look bad is easy it seems. He is enjoying his evening knowing that all of you have a strong distaste caught in your throats, and he is right. Your going to have to swallow a lot more too before they are put to political rest in the next election. They play a good game of scum ball.
Who cares? Rove is ultimately correct anyway, Democrats ARE responsible for Iraq. They could've stopped Bush if they wanted to, they had at least 40 senators for every second of the Bush presidency and could've filibustered each and every one of his criminal enterprises.
DemocRats and Rove are two pieces cut out of the same cloth. VOTE SHEEHAN. VOTE INDEPENDENT.
Rove is penultimately a despicable wicked evil propagandist,
who vial waffen Schutzstaffel (SS) void of a soul will feel
the strongest of karmic judgments, for his mass murder and greed.
Seems like Rove's test marketing his opening statement for his upcoming trial in The Hague. 'Life' for this porcine perv is what I'd say (I oppose capital punishment).
