Reporters Say Baghdad Too Dangerous Despite Surge
WASHINGTON - Nearly 90 percent of U.S. journalists in Iraq say much of Baghdad is still too dangerous to visit, despite a recent drop in violence attributed to the build-up of U.S. forces, a poll released on Wednesday said.
The survey by the Washington-based Pew Research Center showed that many U.S. journalists believe coverage has painted too rosy a picture of the conflict.
A separate Pew poll released on Tuesday showed that 48 percent of Americans believe the U.S. military effort in Iraq is going very or fairly well, up from 34 percent in June, amid signs of declining Iraqi civilian casualties and progress against Islamist militants such as al Qaeda in Iraq.
But most journalists said they believe violence and the threat of violence have increased during their tenures.
Much of the danger for journalists is faced by local Iraqis, who often do most of the reporting outside Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, the data showed.
Fifty-eight percent of U.S. news organizations have had local Iraqi staff killed or kidnapped within the past year, the survey said. About two-thirds of news outlets said local staff face physical or verbal threats at least several times a month.
"Above all, the journalists -- most of them veteran war correspondents -- describe conditions in Iraq as the most perilous they have ever encountered, and this above everything else is influencing the reporting," the authors said in a report that accompanied the data.
At least 122 journalists and 41 media support staff have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, the New-York based Committee to Protect Journalists says. About 85 percent of those killed were Iraqis.
Pew's Project for Excellence in Journalism surveyed 111 journalists who have worked in Iraq for 29 news organizations, all but one of them U.S.-based. The poll was conducted Sept. 28 through Nov. 7, Pew said.
HIGH MARKS FOR REPORTING EFFORT
Pew had tried to reach a total of 181 journalists, which it believes are nearly all those who have covered Iraq for American news organizations.
The journalists gave high marks to the overall reporting effort, with 74 percent rating news-gathering as good or excellent. The highest marks went to coverage of U.S. troops and the war against insurgents.
Despite claims by U.S. officials that reporting from Iraq is negatively biased, 70 percent of those surveyed believe overall coverage is accurate, while 15 percent say the coverage makes the situation look better than it is.
Forty-four percent of journalists believe reporting has treated the Bush administration fairly, while 43 percent said coverage has been too easy on U.S. officials.
But the data also showed that 67 percent are at least somewhat concerned that the accuracy and completeness of their reports have suffered because of ongoing security problems that limit their access to the country.
President George W. Bush's so-called surge strategy to stabilize Baghdad and its environs has been credited with a fall-off in attacks on Iraqi civilians and U.S. coalition forces over the past two months.
But 87 percent of respondents said at least half of Baghdad remains too dangerous for a Western journalist to visit, with the capital's Shi'ite-dominated Sadr City enclave rated the most dangerous spot in Iraq. Eighteen percent said the entire city of Baghdad is too dangerous for travel.
Most U.S. journalists have traveled to danger spots such as Sadr City, either under the protection of private security guards or the U.S. military.
"Eight in 10 journalists believe conditions have deteriorated for reporters since their own first posting in the country," the survey's authors said.
Under-reported subjects of the war include the plight of Iraqi civilians, Shi'ite-on-Shi'ite violence in southern Iraq and general events occurring outside Baghdad, journalists said.

Show AllKEM PATRICK -- I like to met you some day, but that's hardly probably unless the shrub barb wires us into the same supermax of radicals pen, some honor ehhh?
I'm feeling my job loss was part of item 8 (if I recall) on Naomi's list, as my previous life obliquely intersected the beast's lair. I'm happier now being engaged herein, than have been for a long time - it's great to be doing service for the greater good.
I was writing this other email response to you, but will just combined here: Unbelievable synchronicity as I'm right now listening Alex Jones & Naomi Wolfe talk about the shrub's grandpa Prescott Bush, and the extraordinary Nazi connection going back ~ 80 years.
The more I've read and learned the scarier I feel, and it's odd to say thanks for your ref to grandfather Prescott, maternal side great grandfather (Geo Herb Walker) - which leads to Hitler's money man Fritz Thyssen, the Haraman, DuPont, Remington, GP.Morgan junta that failed in 1934 thanks to Brigdr Gen Smedley Butler's finking the US Nazi's plan to assassinate FDR - to the McCormick Dixtine Committe - by no trial for treason they made Prescott a Senator and he finally got 1.5 Million when Thyssen died in '51.
W's grandfather Prescott married the daughter of Geo Herbert Walker, whose name was passed down as a large part of W's Dad's name (G H W Bush, I). The reason the name is so obviously a gratuity is that Prescott was a relatively poor 'tire salesman' at the time, and was brought into high finance through his father-in-law's business, to provide his wife the proper fine things of life.
Watch this 10 min long video here, by Investigative reporter John Buchanan and for additional videos and links a simple google search for 'Prescott Bush Nazi' will be very fruitful.
A synopsis of the movie and is that both his grandfather and maternal Great Grandfather were known Nazi agents, directly connected to the man that funded Hitler's war machinery (Fritz Thyssen) as his direct agents in the USA. It was this same connection that bankrolled the Bush family fortune (c. 1951, when the Nazi holding were liquidated for $1.5 million - they were busy directly in the money for ~ 4 decades).
I'm so ILL with all of the nazi connections: Rove (Roverer, dad former SS governor), Arnold (dad also one of original SS), plans to change constitution so he can run "his" homeland (?, new ≠old), and long time buddy Kurt Walhim (also SS).
So sad, they're bad, I'm mad. I'm reserving a modicum of hope for another outcome.
I've still got a skull and crossed bones for them, but I don't think they eat vegetarians
Well golly Nspire, that makes me feel a whoe lot better about what I wrote there. I very much appreciate you being here at CD also, along with many hundreds of others.
Not to worry, you've been a godsend to this forum,
and humor is appreciated at times with great diversity
I wish I had not written that, it was a poor attempt at humor and not at all true. I also fear it ruined this thread, no one wishes to comment on it now. __ I'm truly sorry for being a horrible jerk there.
Ohhh, well thank you for the explinations and the wonderful kudos.
I got one last night from my mate before she crossed her feet and went back to sleep too. __ Now I understand.
Kem, kudos is somewhere between Well done! and Three cheers!
KEM - a kudo is dowackie thing, just a little bit better than the prize in a Jack-n-da-Box, sometimes even including a certificate suitable for framing .
Kudos for KEM!
Iraq is improving (so goeth the spin) for 3 reasons
1. so the surge can be termed a success
2. to improve Repub chances in election
3. to prove that Iraq is settled down so the attack on Iran can commence.
McCain watches Fox news
Thanks for for the kudos guys and gals.
What the hell is a kudo?
I go to Fox news every once in a while to see just what a joke this News service is. There it was they were talking about how much better things are in Iraq. They had a shot of an Iraqi selling his produce and smiling for the camera. Who knows when that shot was taken and under what circumstances. I watched a little of the debates and there was McCain saying we lost Vietnam because the will of the people faltered at home! This is my old home town senator I used to respect. Now I regard him as Bush Lite. Truly a pathetic individual! He of all people should know better! What didn't he learn about war!! Part of the problem not part of the solution!
Kem, by all means, stay in the game: your posts are funny and informative.
I'm shocked -- shocked, I tell you! -- that American reporters even ventured out of the Green Zone at all -- or did they just make this up, like everything else?
Does it ever occur to these 'reporters' that the Iraqis who are doing the leg work for them might be lying about the violence just to get rid of the American occupiers? "New tack: Maybe they'll leave if we just tell them what they want to hear -- everything is getting better and better."
KEM - as far as the keyboard, I'm LOL imagining you there doing that, when they just turn the power or internet off.
But it's really very poetic and powerful symbolizing the ethereal power for us to communicate, against the totalitarian encroachment of our freedoms -- which is a far fairer stance for non-violent expression of our ideas and calls to action.
We need symbols to enable us to connect with the times, people, and forces that sway our moments. I really think this might be empowering for others as well.

I personally think it is just one more of Bush's many, many, many lies! In a few months we might start hearing some of what the truth actually is. Because invariably it leeks out. But, I will reserve my optimism about how well it's going for another 6 months to a year. Just to see if it's the same then. Then and only then I might reconsider and start believing it. How many times has this bunch painted a rosy picture of how well it's going only to have a IED in the middle of that picture? You can't believe a word that comes out of any of their mouths. But, invariably there are American's out there who do believe it. Because when Bush lies the poll numbers always go up. So, I guess I am one of the cynical ones in the crowd. I need more proof than what Bush says. But, I am not seeing much proof right at this moment.

Ths explains in detail, how the government covers up and lies to us and the entire world.
PaulMagillSmith----I wasn't aware of that connection, but somehow it makes perfect sense---one thing this Nation has a very consistent record of doing is creating countless hideous ways to maim and kill human beings. I wonder, will this nightmare ever end? How much darkness can the world hold? And the lies, like the casulties, just keep piling up.
I fear that people in this country have shut down much of what makes them human. Otherwise the outrage and shame for what this govt does in our names would spill out onto the streets.
Yes shakker-- and we have Seymour Hersch doing that, and also Naomi Klein, who will be on Keith Olbermann's show Thursday night, as well as John Edwards.
I see that this survey was of American journalists saying it's too dangerous, but please note that 85% of the casualties suffered by reporters were by the Iraqi stringers. Will there ever be a war memorial built for them? I sure hope so.
What would be really dangerous for a reporter would be to tell the truth about Bu$h the inferior, the US empire, and the state of our constitutional form of government.
How does that go, KEM, "...when they pry this keyboard from my dead cold fingers." LOL.
It might not seem like we aren't doing much, but in an information society spreading truthful info to counter lies is essntial. DU is just too nasty to ignore.
starofthesea, are you aware that Agent Orange and DU weaponry came out of the same program? The Manhattan Project durng WWII.
Interesting to note how American MSM reporters are induced to tell the truth about Iraq when their own ratty hides are physically at stake.
For most of them, once they come back home to their million dollar salaries and perqs, they easily fall right back into their official US Goverment propaganda roles.
You have to admit: The fascist American System is nothing if not cleverly successful. It produces a profusion of sociopathic 'professionals,' -- hardly limited to just politicians.
KEM PATRICK----DU is an important issue to educate the American public about. When you get discouraged, just remember the struggle VietNam vets went through with Agent Orange. And if Americans over there think they've got a problem, think about the effects on the Iraqis and the entire region. We live on ONE planet and we are intimately connected. The chickens have and will continue to come home to roost. Sad that folks are so stuck in denial. Keep on keepin on. And bless you for your efforts.
Hi There BeForKids, how ya doin? Been getting hammered by several on the article about Bush has insured we stay in Iraq. One guy said everyone at Common Dreams was getting tired of seeing my idiotic posts here.
Well, they should just doze off then, cause I ain't leaving till the guy with the power here zaps me off the site.
Hi Kem, good to hear from you. I wondered when you would show up.
Those reporters will learn what dangerous really means, when they begin to suffer from radiation poisoning from inhaling the DU dust over there. The DU readings in downtown Baghdad are 2,000 times normal. If it was 20 above normal, I would be worried.
Of course those nano particles of deadly DU floating around in the air are invisible to the naked eye. It's kinda like germs, we don't ever see them until the doctor shows them to us in his microscope and says, "Sorry bud, but you're gonna die".
Words from the horse's mouth that will never reach the public's ears. It seems to me that one aspect of a democracy is that people get to hear differing points of views. The only thing people in America get to hear is a Greek chorus.
