Groups Will Use Holocaust Day To Highlight Mass Murder in Darfur
Britain’s official day to mark the Holocaust will be dedicated to highlighting the mass murder taking in place in Darfur today, to increase pressure on the Sudanese government to stop the killing there.
The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust will use its national day on 27 January to demand tougher action to stop atrocities in Sudan. The official charity was set up with the backing of the Government to learn the lessons of the Holocaust against six million Jews in the Second World War.
A survey conducted by YouGov for the charity showed that 53 per cent of British people are aware of the outrages being committed in Darfur but 83 per cent have done nothing about them. About 24 per cent said they had done nothing because they did not believe they could change anything, and 18 per cent said they did not know what to do.
The charity was hoping that by drawing attention to the killing in Darfur, it would persuade more people to lobby MPs and protest for tougher action against a regime presiding over the mass murder.
More than one million people have fled their homes in Sudan to escape government-armed militias which are blamed for the deaths of 30,000 people, and mass starvation is feared if food aid does not reach the refugee camps.
Among those who have fled to the UK is Khatir Mohammed, who said he feared being sent back to Darfur. He said: “I currently have asylum status but fear that I could be deported at any time as this would lead to certain death. I have no idea where my wife is. I also have three brothers and one sister in Darfur. If the British people want to help us I would encourage them to support the asylum seekers by raising money for them and raising awareness of the situation.”
The UN Special Envoy for Darfur, Jan Eliasson, is trying to broker a peace deal before the scheduled arrival of more than 20,000 peacekeepers in Darfur next year.
The UN has declared the situation in Sudan a “severe humanitarian crisis” rather than “genocide”, which would allow countries to intervene more directly under international law. Britain, the EU, US and UN are working to put pressure on the Sudanese government to disarm and disband the militia. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair did not rule out the use of force, but that is not on the agenda, although UN peace talks earlier this month failed to produce a solution.
Stephen Smith, chairman of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust said: “During the Second World War, ordinary civilians stood by and did nothing while millions of Jews were taken to the gas chambers. Through the modern day camera lens, the situation is brought to our living rooms. It is there we make the decision - do we take a stand or change the TV channel and ignore the plight of millions in Darfur?”

According to a report by the International Energy Agency(IEA) entitled Medium-Term Oil Market Report, which is in Michael Klare’s words “a blunt assessment of the global supply-and-demand equation over the 2007-12 period” the world will need vast amounts of additional petroleum over the next few years and it will need to come primarily from: Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Angola, Libya, Nigeria, Kazakhstan, Venezuela and…Sudan.
Whoever controls this oil will have their hands on the lever of the world economy. Right now a Chinese oil company has contracts to drill in the Darfur region of Sudan. The rebels in that region want in on the profits.
In order to create the security desired by oil companies, the government of Sudan is terrorizing people off their land and into starvation - just as they had done numerous times in the South of Sudan. (Playing many combinations of tribes against each other - see the human rights watch reports, they make this all very clear) The US and its adjuncts do not care for the Sudanese - they just don’t want Chinese companies gaining access to the oil. They’ll be just as happy to slaughter the Darfurians when the Chinese are gone. If you don’t see this coming then you’ve slept through nearly 30 years of Iraq policy. We’ve killed far more Iraqis than Sudan has killed Darfurians.
Also of significance is Sudan’s strategic geographic position. Its proximity to key water sources, to ocean transport etc. Israel and the Zionist lobby are the children of European and American Imperialism and play side-kick to the US. They do not control US policy. The Zionist “lobby’s” real purpose is to lobby us - American people - not the American government. More than any other lobby they win American support for Imperialist wars, interventions etc.
While the post before mine smacks of a holocaust denial that I don’t buy into, it is true that the predominant holocaust narrative serves the interests of US imperialism and Zionism. Rather than learn how the holocaust was achieved as a part of an international capitalist assault on working class and socialist organizations (which opposed anti-semitism), we learn that it happened because Germans, Europeans and even human beings as a rule are anti-semitic and when allowed will kill off as many Jews as possible. Hence the best solution is to create a fortress state that privileges one ethnic group over others and is dependent on other empires for its existence. We also learn that the US entered WWII to save the Jews from the holocaust, which it neither intended to do nor succeeded in doing. Nonetheless, every American war in my memory has been waged through the myth of the US as enemy of genocide. Prevent genocide? Our state was built on genocide. It is the guardian of exploitation, dislocation and misery. Those who attempt to convince us that we should support US employment of force under the banner of humanitarianism or human rights are either fools or charlatans. They cannot be anything but the enemies of humanity.

Therzal - You might try reading the late, great Raul Hilberg’s The Destruction of the European Jews (1440 pages in the last edition, Yale Univ. Press, 2003) before declaring the holocaust to be “consigned beyond the reaches of unfettered historical research”. Tendentious rhetoric is no substitute for serious study.

The reflexive pouring of bile on everything that might be remotely linked with Israel makes me literally nauseous. I am proud to hold joint American-Israeli citizenship. This does not mean I approve everything the Israeli government has done. I don’t. If I saw any way to change things, I’d still be in Israel, not back in America. But not all Israelis or everything Israeli is evil!
In this case, a Jewish community is sharing a sacred day with those who need compassion as the Jews did in the 1930s. I didn’t see anything about military intervention–just awareness and appropriate action.

What about my relatives that died in Nazi concentration camps? I guess they don’t rate a holocaust day, becuase they are not jewish. My grandfather survived several years in the Merida Camp in Bilbao, Spain. Others in my family died in camps. I was born in 1961, I had nothing to do with the holocaust. I don’t want to hear about it anymore, other than lite reading in a history book. There is so much killing going on, it makes WWII look like a party. We should deal with the here and now. What of Israel and their treatment of non-jews. It is worse than what is written in the Talmud. What comes around, goes around. Watch out Israel!
I see some good and heartening reader comments here, and am glad to see that criticising the Israeli govt for its wrongs is not being stupidly equated with ALL citizens or Jewish citizens of Israel, or anywhere else, being all and consequentially wrong. If we did that with them, then we’d be fiend hypocrites to not do the same with EVERYONE else among all of humanity; “for crying out loud”.
I’m not Jewish, although having fundamental Christian faith, which is not what is known in the U.S., but fundamentally focused on Jesus and the religious faith, etc., that he taught, I am therefore Judeo; but then so also are Muslims of true faith and sound world citizenship. And that’s besides the fact that ALL human beings have a lot more truly in common than we do or can account for in terms of real differences.

As for Bob Van den Broeck’s comment, yes, the Holocaust of Jews during WWII was very tragic and real, and I’ve read some very interesting history about that at I believe www.JewsAgainstZionism.com or NKUSA, if not both; about how the wicked Zionists, who are not [real] Jews actually did very likely work to influence political processes so that Hitler and the Nazis would do what they did, and for the purpose of these Zionists to be able to achieve the establishment of the state of Israel. That is, they deliberately treated true and innocent Jews, millions of them, as sacrifical lambs for the gredy sake of establishing Israel. It’s True Torah Jews who provide this history; and although it has not been ascertained 100%, not according to the last time that I read about this, there sure does seem to be such strong circumstantial evidence that we can be confident, i.e., certain enough, that this ugly scenario really happened.
Anyway, that’s only what I read there, and as for Jews having been holocausted, there were also around 20mn Russians, some or many of them being also Jews, but not all of them; the French who were very much put under broad concentration camp sort of conditions with the extremely unjust oppression by the Nazis; and so on.
And you are absolutely right about there being a tremendous amount of blood being shed today and that this is what we really need to, must focus on trying to stop. History is good to learn about if it helps understand the present, or for just interest, but we should not dwell on it in ways that are akin to excuses for not being concerned, actively so, about the present crimes being committed by states, which, in turn, is very much for Big Business; as has now long been the case.
We need to be concerned, actively, about the situation of Palestinians, Iraqis, Afghans, Kosovans or Kosovan Serbs at least, Africans, Mexicans, etc., etc., and the poorest among North Americans, although I already said Mexicans, and the poorest among Canadians, I believe, are not well but better off than their American, U.S. counterparts, except wherein we do need to be concerned about the crimes perpetually committed about the apartheided North American First Nations peoples, the indigenous of LONG ancestry.

His argument is of the kind that is like saying that “all that meets the eye is all there is to reality”, and that’s nonesense; if it was true, then we would have absolutely no need for scientific research, investigations to uncover who the presently unknown culprits of crime are, so inclusive of criminal conspiracies, and so on. “What meets the eye” is only reflective of [a] part of reality, NOT the whole of it; usually. The table my computer monitor and keyboard are what meets my eye and there’s nothing more to try to discover about this reality from my standpoint; but when it comes to who really rules govt, these people have been correctly referred to as ‘invisible govt’, ‘hidden hand inside govt’, ’shadow govt’, and possibly other examples. Those were or are not perceived, conceptually, without basis; there’s very strong reason to realise that this is very much how govt [is] ruled, while democracy is really just a fraud, facade, mask.
NO govt or political system that I know of existing is perfect; all have their flaws, and while it’s “human to err”, it’s also “human to CORRECT our errors”. This MUST be done.

Darfurians certainly need help, but there are worse cases in Africa, such as in the Congo, which Keith Harmon Snow, and a few other people, have well written about; just that they’re not getting enough readership, or if they are, then the readers are too ignorant to give these writers or investigative journalists their due credits.

MANY Kurds do NOT want to become a separate state; many of them disagree with the goons running the govt of the Kurdish north of Iraq; many of them are opposed to the hell that’s been brought down upon ALL OF IRAQ, just that it hasn’t hit the north yet like the rest of Iraq has been hit; many Kurds protested in opposition to their rotten and weak govt leaders over the past two or three years, including to try to destroy the Kurdish monument to the so-called gassing of Kurds event of 1998. We all know that that was that was blamed on Saddam Hussein, that his forces committed this act; and when it may just as well have been done, and that is if it’s not more likely that it was done by the Iranian forces using the more dangerous nerve gas. Saddam’s forces, from what I read, used mustard gas, and it’s apparently non-lethal, or much less-so than nerve gas is anyway.
In any case, that gassing story came out in excellent reports of the trial of Saddam Hussein, reports of course not published by Western media, and these stated that it cannot be proven that Saddam’s forces killed many Kurds, all while those his forces did kill were, and by far, MOSTLY Kurdish militia fighting with the Iranian forces [INSIDE] Iraq, so combatants, NOT civilian Kurds. ETC. ETC. ETC.
It’s ALL INFORMATION AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET.

I’LL GLADLY check out what he has to say, but I wouldn’t phrase the reference the way you did rsterling1. I’d instead say anyone interested in reading from another good reference on Darfur and Sudan, then check out what Alex De Waal says.
Why? Because Keith Harmon Snow is a very good resource and has already been referred to twice here; anyone wanting to really know what’s going on in Darfur and Sudan can refer to his work.

Larry Chin and some other people at or who write for OnlineJournal.com, among other sites, have also provided good articles to read about what’s going on in African contexts and due to Western imperialist predation. But I don’t know how much these people have produced on this, while know that KHS makes it a very strong focus of his.
Anyway, I’ll gladly check out what Alex de Waal provides and hope that he’s another excellent resource. KHS is very good, but having more than one very good resource is better. And KHS has learned a lot from others, saying so very openly himself, so maybe Alex de Waal is one of these people.
