Impeachment: If Not Now, When?
Lawmakers Need to Stand Up For The Constitution and Support Impeachment
On Nov. 6, Rep. Dennis Kucinich introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney on the floor of the House of Representatives. For one shining moment the will of the majority of Americans and the promise of this nation's founders were truly represented.
The detailed charges were solemnly read from the House podium and televised on C-Span. House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer made a motion to table the bill. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lobbied hard for votes to table.
In a stunning turnaround, House Republicans changed strategy and voted decisively to prevent tabling the impeachment resolution.
Pelosi was defied by 85 Democratic members who voted against tabling the impeachment resolution. This includes John Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and six committee members. The resolution was quickly voted back to the Judiciary Committee, where it is not resting quietly.
Judiciary Committee member Bob Wexler wrote, "The American people are served well with a legitimate and thorough impeachment inquiry. I will urge the Judiciary Committee to schedule impeachment hearings immediately and not let this issue languish as it has over the last six months. Only through hearings can we begin to correct the abuses of Dick Cheney and the Bush administration."
Impeachment is squarely on the table, and momentum is building. A year ago, almost no elected official breathed the word impeachment. Now impeachment has hit the House floor, and our electeds have gone on record. Millions of Americans are demanding an end to executive abuse of power.
After six years of state of emergency, the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, continual war and occupations, our Constitution is deeply in crisis. Americans are in danger of losing our system of government and civil rights if they do not roll back the Bush administration's assault on the rule of law.
Allowing Cheney and George W. Bush to finish their terms without being impeached means future presidents are free to copy their lawless behavior. Of course many important issues deserve the attention of Congress. But the Constitution is the foundation of our democracy, not just an issue. Without the Constitution, we have nothing.
Polls show that 74 percent of Democrats and the majority of American adults support impeaching Cheney. "Never in our history have the high crimes and misdemeanors been so flagrant, and the people of our country know it," writes local author Richard Behan.
Kucinich has targeted Cheney first, but investigations will implicate the president as well. For the first time in the history of the Gallup Poll, 50 percent of respondents say they "strongly disapprove" of the president. Richard Nixon had reached the previous high, 48 percent, just before an impeachment inquiry was launched in 1974. With these numbers, why aren't Bush and Cheney gone already?
The vice president is accused of:
- purposely manipulating intelligence to fabricate a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction in order to justify an attack on Iraq;
- deceiving Congress about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al-Qaida;
- threatening aggression against the Republic of Iran, absent any real threat to the United States.
These violations of the Constitution and international treaty are just the tip of the iceberg. More articles of impeachment can be added at any time, and ample evidence to convict is on the public record. Representatives need to introduce articles regarding:
- illegal war, in violation of both international treaty and the Constitution;
- widespread domestic wiretapping in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a felony. Bush already has admitted to this;
- condoning torture in violation of federal laws and international treaties;
- rescinding habeas corpus, the cornerstone of Western law since the Magna Carta;
- obstruction of justice regarding U.S. attorney firings;
- subversion of the Constitution, abuse of signing statements and rescinding habeas corpus.
It's astounding that our representatives to Congress carry on with business as usual knowing that Americans lack habeas corpus and a working code of law. I want my representative, Dave Reichert, to block the doors of the House until habeas is restored as a basic human right in this nation!
In light of Bush's steady drumbeat for war with Iran, Kucinich said he will consider an impeachment resolution against him.
"Impeachment may well be the only remedy which remains to stop a war of aggression against Iran," he says.
"The most conservative principle of the Founding Fathers was distrust of unchecked power. Centuries of experience substantiated that absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Constitution embraced a separation of powers to keep the legislative, executive and judicial branches in equilibrium," Bruce Fein, a constitutional lawyer and associate deputy attorney general in the Reagan administration, said in the October 2006 edition of Washington Monthly.
If Congress were serious about oversight, there already would be dozens of bills and resolutions calling for impeachment of Bush and Cheney. The "Unitary Executive Theory" violates the principle of balance of power in the Constitution. The president cites this "unitary" power in hundreds of signing statements that say he can ignore laws passed by Congress.
The First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments are all now subject to the caprice of government officials. The Military Commissions Act allows U.S. citizens to be detained without due process if they are declared enemy combatants. Without our permission, this country has become an exporter of torture.
Congress has failed to provide oversight and exercise its authority to rein in a criminal administration. Only swift action on impeachment can redeem it now. The people have done the heavy work of bringing impeachment forward. Representatives need only ask if the allegations are serious enough to warrant investigations.
George Bush and Dick Cheney promote an imperial presidency. They assert that the executive is the most powerful branch of government, undermining the judiciary and Congress in violation of the Constitution's bedrock principle of shared power among three co-equal branches. This subverts the very nature of our system of government.
"This is an attempt by the president to have the final word on his own constitutional powers, which eliminates the checks and balances that keep the country a democracy. ... That's a big problem because that's essentially a dictatorship," Fein said.
Washington For Impeachment and Citizens to Impeach Bush and Cheney are working to inform the public, collect signatures to petitions, provide forums, and lobby representatives. Washington was the second state to sponsor a bill for impeachment in the state Legislature.
Washington State Democratic organizations have passed resolutions in 11 Democratic legislative districts, five counties and the Washington State Democratic Central Committee. Jay Inslee, D-Bainbridge Island, has received impeachment resolutions from almost every legislative district within his congressional district. When will he represent the will of his constituents and honor his oath to protect the Constitution?
The national movement to impeach is a non-partisan effort to restore the Constitution and the rule of law. People across the political spectrum can unite to preserve the Constitution and civil liberties given to us by the founders. Impeachment is the peaceful, orderly, constitutionally prescribed way to rid ourselves of a lawless administration.
The issue is not about removing Bush and Cheney as much as it is about preserving the Constitution and redeeming the office of the executive. The Constitution is the contract of governance between the people and the government. What happens when major portions of the contract are violated?
Congress has failed to call the president and vice president to account, so citizens must turn up the heat. Members of Congress who fail to demand investigations are covering for criminals. Every elected official has sworn an oath to "support and protect the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic." Anything less than impeachment and a full repudiation of the Bush administration's crimes and violations of the law is a dereliction of duty and a betrayal of the public trust.
If we want our democracy back, we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work to clean out the House.

Show AllLook beyond your borders. I realise that this is something Americans don't do but you must.
Democracy is dying everywhere. Here in Australia our government under Howard followed Bush and co into Iraq as did Blair in the UK.
The key is the media. I read Linda Boyd's article and it was logical, correct and a breath of fresh air but it just doesn't compete with 'the call to fear' being used by the media.
The public are no longer informed, they are entertained and sites like this one are marginalised by a media that use mythology and semiotics to tell 'the average Joe' what he thinks. Like the control that the circus had over Ancient Rome, Western democracy is being subverted by a lust for sensation.
For over a centuary the USA has lead the world but like Rome before it, it is decaying. The corporate model is failing humanity because the corporations are owned by no one. Fox is not American and yet it tells you what to think and what is important. I wonder how the men who signed the Declaration of Independence would think of Rupert Murdock?
I really feel for my American freinds. You obviously elected the people needed to take care of this matter for you.But after Pelosi and her cronies met with Bush behind closed doors and he showed them the balance book everything changed. The fact that the U.S.A. is teetering on the brink of a financial collapse changed their thinking. With the dollar being slowly left to disintegrate against other monetary instruments the American consumer is soon to be in for a new and rude awakening. This has all been in the mix since the gold standard was eliminated. The standard of living you have had good for so many years was bought and paid for by the hard work of the citizens of other nations.Im afraid that the american way of life is not the idyllic way of sustaining the future. And now,as can be seen by the rising standard of living in China, is time for the shoe to go on the other foot.
I simply sent this to Walter B. Jones who is my Congressman in North Carolina...
Are you a gutless, spineless coward who will not do his job or will you do what you were sworn to do and protect the constitution of the United States of America and get those criminals out of the Whitehouse??!!!

It may seem hopeless, but we have to keep writing, calling, and fighting for what we know is right, especially in these darkest moments. So many people in this country do know what is what--we are merely being censored by the political and media establishments that want to keep us dumb and under control. Keep fighting. Time's over for cynical "it doesn't matter, give it up" kinds of statements. Do anything you can to make a difference, even if it is as little as forwarding this piece to one person who hasn't had time or energy to think about impeachment b/c he or she is working 2-3 jobs, along with a phone number or email address for someone on the Judiciary Committee. Time for action, not cynicism.
Mary lou, maybe we do need a military coup as big bad bob suggests? Maybe we do need a cruel military rule imposed on us? Maybe we do need to see if the loud-mouth pro-gun types have the balls to form militias to stand up to and fight the junta? (And lose.... hand guns/rifles are no match for military weapons, but that's another thread). Maybe we do need another civil war, but not between north and south, but between brothers and sisters in and out of uniform. Maybe we do need millions of American civilians killed in the name of "freedom" before we wake up from this nightmare?
Start the marching IMAGINEUSA, I've done that more than once, but I see you also are here clicking away on your computer board.
Great article, and passionate responses all the way down to this one. I believe Impeachment can happen much faster than Nov., 2008. If the American couch potato would get off of their television watching backsides and pitch in , we could have them gone by spring. For every 5 people who call and write their Congresspersons, there are 95 who don't even know that they have 2 Senators and a Congressperson. This Country can't afford one more DAY with these cowardly henchmen in charge. I am consistently stunned to see America sending george bush around the world to negotiate anything with anybody. Delay, Rove, Cheney, Gonzales, Cunningham, Myers, Libby, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, (Sessions should have gone to jail with Siegleman, or without him) Orin Hatch, you've got to be kidding, and top it off with Bush? This ought to be the FBI's most wanted list. And you know I forgot at least a dozen, or two.
Come on the REST OF AMERICA. History is happening right before your eyes and it's not a done deal yet. We need your help. Write your first letter to Congress and call for once. Most Common Dreams readers probably have but not All of you yet. Get your dead head roommate or family member to kick in. Congress dosn't respond well to 5%, but they have never seen 20%. Send a donation to the one Congressperson with the guts to give this article it's so important subject. Dennis, Go, Dennis Kucinich. Kucinich and Somebody or Somebody and Kucinich. You know Hillary dosn't want him. He's up there talking the TRUTH and Americans, the 95ers don't recognize it. And to you naysayers that say impeachment won't happen, please step aside, you are in the way.
Ted Rall raised an important point in his column last week. He pointed out that the entire Bush Presidency is illegitimate because the U.S. Supreme Court did not have jurisdiction to intervene in the State's Rights issue of the Florida state election of Electoral College delegates in 2000.
If the USA is to join the rest of the world it had better kick out of office all the Republicans and most of the Democrats and form a new party. The whole election process needs to be changed where money has no corrupting influence. The FCC, as a part of the granting of a licence should demand free advertising for everybody regardless of their supposed poll numbers.
Impeaching Bush and Cheney now is like taking an eye out of a potato when the whole potato is rotten. The root cause of most of the problems now facing the USA cannot and will not be cured by an " election " under the present arrangements, it will just change the names of the criminals.
To help keep the drumbeat going, and getting those couch potatoes in your life on the phone (dial for them! Let them use your minutes!), here is a handy list of phone numbers of members of the Judiciary Committee that was passed on to me via a Kucinich meetup (along with some notes on how they voted on November 6)--pass it on:

HEAVY RUNNER. They are not only illegitimate, they are an abortion. What can we do because they are illegitimate? Take it to the Supreme Court?
Catch 22 all over again.
Does anyone know why Bill Clinton testified under oath in the first place? Why did he not refuse to go under oath as Bush and Cheny have done and just thumb their noses at Congress and the people and tell them to go to H_____? Surely the same executive privilege was available to him as was to Bush. Just wondering why the difference.
Impeachment or no impeachment, there is one undisputable fact: this country is going broke. The damage already has been done, and it is a matter of time for everything else to play out. Even if you impeach Bush and Cheney, the damage already has been done, and in fact, may be irreversible. Thanks to a complicit Congress, we already may have passed the point of no return. The fact of the matter as we all know it, is these crooks needed to be ousted years ago. The system already is well entrenched and unlikely to change unless someone places dynamite at the foundation to bring the whole corrupt structure down. We must convince our families and friends to throw out this entire lot of politicians (with the exception of Kucinich) and elect new faces with new ideas. This is not to deny impeachment. But it might be too little too late. We need to go much deeper to shake the tree so all of the rotten fruit falls to the ground. The only way to do that is to install new leadership. Cindy Sheehan would be a great start!
Out Pelosi and In Sheehan, for starters. And, if the Democratic party doesn't want Kucinich, then write him in unless he runs as an Independent. Kucinich is the only one who represents the poor and middle class.
Clinton didn't have Rove advising him KERMEL, besides he didn't do it. ___ Monica did and Bill thought Ted was going to give her a lift home.
It is not up to Pelosi, shes not the factor, Conyers is the only person on this here planet, that is holding up the legal process.
I think Bill Clinton testified because there was a provision at the time for a special prosecutor. This provision may have expired? All congress would have to do is operationally define the case and turn it over to a special prosecutor to see if there is merit for a proceeding.
Ahem, and even the easter bunny could do that.
Oh, and Ken (porn) Starr works for Blackwater now.
JODY J. If the impeachnment process would begin, the truths would come out. There would be more singing in Wshington than with the Morman Tabernacle Choir or The Fred Waring Orchestra. The press wold have to cover it and the house of cards would tumble. Before it was half over, Nancy Pelosi would be a heroine, a Valkire. She'd be a fne president once the pressure was off. ___ Heck, Paris Hilton would be in comparrison to Bush.
I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment.
I agree with Jodi J that it will take a push from people. RE Pelosi advocating impeachment: She coulda, shoulda oh, only if she woulda kept her mouth shut! She did not have to volunteer the "Off the table" crap (and this before she was re elected and became speaker, yet) Just stand to the side and let the chips fall. It would have been a significant difference.
People in power (especially the Dems) are always reluctant to enter into an impeachment battle. It takes a lot of prodding.
As John Nichols says ("The Genius of Impeachment) it does not even require an impeachment "vicotory" to matter. It brings the issue to center stage, shines light where it is needed, and in the case of legitimate impeachments, suddenly elevates the party moving forward into relevance. The democrats could finally be about something! And we'd begin to hope we might get our Democracy and Constitution back.
Ya think? __ Maybe they actually work for him and Cheney, a sub of Halliburton of course. That should be spelled, Hellsabustin.
I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment.

You're right CLAUDIUS. If we don't have a depression within six months, I'll eat my shorts. This one will make the one of 29 seem like a spring picnic. That is not an exaggeration in my opinion. Of course I am wrong at times. ______ See there, I just was.
You stttuttteer MCONNE15? mamameee tatatatooo. Of course both of your posts were excellent.
pleasethank, pleasethink for the phone #'s list. I'll try calling a new group of numbskulls to try and penetrate the dense fog.
We still need to try inherent contempt on Rove, Miers and whoever else didn't show up when subpoenaed by Congress. Would you not crack at least a Guiness Book type smile in your neo-con hardened face to see Carl Rove sitting in the White house basement slammer. Right next to Cheney. Sweet! I would still recommend they get a fair trial even though I would bet the farm on the guilty verdict. So much for dreamin. For now at least. As soon as the impeachment inquiry points to 'hell yes' the troops would already be coming home. Sweeter still!
BUSH AND CHENEY FOR PRISON!

"I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment."
Pelosi never needed to advocate impeachment, she just needed to not actively block it which is exactly what she did when she publicly stated that "impeachment is off the table".
Then not long after that she and her hubby attended a private dinner at the invitation of George Bush and Laura at the White House. Anyone who thinks there isn't a bunch of rot in Washington needs to take off their blinders.
Lobo Gris
there exists a majority in America that is willing to put up with what we can consider to be (to them, as) an acceptable level of tyranny and neo-fascism.
Why wasn't Bush impeached years ago?
That fact that we now have a laundry list of negatives is staggering to my mind. He should have been impeached long ago and this is why he will get away with it - has gotten away. This administration failed to protect American soil resulting in the 9/11 attacks; they played upon white anglo-saxon prejudices and force-fed the public countless boogie-man stories to justify the invasion of Iraq and the insane occupation of that country; they have failed to bring the 9/11 culprits to justice; they have attacked the poor and middle-classes at home through spending cuts to the social safety net and yet, like the legions that supported Hitler and his Nazi party too many people are not only willing to allow these circumstances to continue, but also encourage them.
The fascists again have the power. There is nothing left to say.
Nice work pleasethink. Nice work everyone. I think I've found my calling as a cheerleader. Rah Rah CD GO! Impeach, obviously. DK - yes. I'm predicting Giuliani though for '08. Sorry to say it. What are we going to do about it?
Well richsmith2,
Maybe you're right. Maybe I am beleiving tall cooked up stories about "Mr Smith Goes to Washington." Maybe you're right that each congressman like D.K. operates in a vacume completely unafected by the party machine that put him into office and the big money interest that allows his bills to go to the floor.... maybe he naively votes his gut without checking to see if he's about to step into a Battle at Little Big Horn....
But I really doubt it. Conspiracy? No. No. It's just part of normal Potomic two-step business. Contract with America? Well it dorked me so hard I still can't walk straight. Democrats in Congress? We'll have ourselves a grand investigation, says Henry Waxman; and then nothing happens. "Just elect me!" cries Polosi, "and then Bush is going to pay." And then? Nothing happens. I wish we'd all have been seeing conspiracies before Iraq. Don't you? I suspect the reason no one's calling for D.K's head is because he's one of them. I mean: Nothing at all out of the White House. Not even a phuk you from Shotgun Dick. Very fishy indeed.
But I could be wrong. I've been lied to and cheated and buttphucked for so long by so many Dems and Repukes that I don't even know which end is up anymore. In fact, I'd be shocked if they didn't try something like this: to throw progressives off the trail and up the wrong tree.
I'm not voting for Dennis, because he's part of the party who lied to America and took impeachment off the table. Want my opinion? Don't be a sapp for another 27 years (shrub or clinton in top office 27 years now.) Don't vote for any corporate party member.
Vote third party (if you even can on a diebold computer voting machine!)
I know, I know...
Diebold. Another conspiracy theory.....
(But the CEO of Diebold has admitted to having a "mission to put GWB in the whitehouse." So does that make it a kooky conspiracy theory even if it's actually true?)
Let's be real Pelosi is one of the best people we have in Congress too bad she's really botched the impeachment issue, she's too old and weak to be fighting for progressives, she's had her day and it's time she retire. We need new blood in the party, tough, smart, white knight types like Dennis Kucinich, people who put their integrity and the intregity of the American people ahead of money. Impeachment is important to America so we can get back some of the honour we've lost. Americans are killing children around the world for big oil, the Pentagon Contractors and the FED. Our reward will be a recession for this loyalty to evil and we deserve it. Hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi and Lebanese children are dead or maimed severely for life because of American greed...we need to stop this madness.
Impeachment on the table NOW and Kucinich President in 2009 is the only way we can save our honour and thus our society. To start repairing the horrible immoral actions we've perpetrated.... Vote Kucinich, campaign for Kucinich, fight for progressive values, change a Cheney Bush America into a Kucinich America, we can do it, don't give up the fight!
Remember eugenics, the forced sterilization of the bottom ten percent of the population. In theory, by continuing to sterilize the bottom ten percent the result would be an ideal Nordic population. Now imagine doing the same to the vocal ten percent to achieve a more orderly Corporate State. Nothing is off the table. There is no end to where the Bush, Cheney mindset will lead. Act while you can.
There are still a lot of couch potatoes watching O'Reilly and Hannity on Fox. These people are vocal and vote. (Another T-Day dinner ruined!) They also challenge the democrats sincerity when they can cheer a man who is a serial philanderer, sexual abuser, possibly even a rapist, who lied under oath and used thug-like tactics to try and keep victim Cathy Willey quiet. Not to mention his sleazy lawyer wife who doesn't seem to realize any of that ever happened.
These folks buy into Iraq, and even the bombing Iran, as defense of the US and Israel, and they consider impeacment of Bush as pratically treason.
Maybe the Dem leadership just wants to avoid this mess and just wait for Dr. Evil and the Moron to leave. (Unfortunately, the neocons are grooming revision 2.0 in Giuliani.)
When Pelosi, said impeachment was off the table, I went through the roof!
What right does she have to decide for the American people on any issue,
especially one as important as this.
It goes too show you, the arrogance and total disregard, that Washington insiders have for the true wishes of the people.
If this government was truly a democracy and our representatives were true representatives in that democracy: Bush and Cheney would been gone long ago.
They philosophy, is vote for me and then be on your way, we have no more
use for you.
The masses are to be seen and not heard!
bbr-001, you said...
"Maybe the Dem leadership just wants to avoid this mess and just wait for Dr. Evil and the Moron to leave. (Unfortunately, the neocons are grooming revision 2.0 in Giuliani.)"
80% of the voting in 2008 will be on the hackable machines. They have stolen the elections before -- even stole some of the seats in 2006 -- we cannot wait for another stolen election. (And anyone in NYC who remembers Giuliani pre-9-11 knows he was in the toilet poll-wise. We do not need his kind as President.)
Yes -- call about impeachment AND
Write the LOCAL offices. The Washington snail mail is still screwed up from when the anthrax was sent out (by GOP operatives?? -- remember only Dems got it in the mail and some postal workers were killed).
Send in those Democratic contribution envelopes with the word IMPEACHMENT in it instead of a check.
And yes, keep reminding the Congress and fellow Democrats of what John Nichols said, impeachment itself is cleansing, regardless of the outcome of the vote. Still, if the American public sees all the charges clearly spelled out for them, can their representatives do anything less than vote to convict?
JodyJ (November 25th, 2007 9:17 pm) ..
"I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment. If both Bush and Cheney are impeached and forced to leave office, Pelosi would be elevated to the Presidency. If Pelosi breathed one word in favor of impeachment, the Republicans would howl that she was moving to take over the country through the back door, any impeachment proceedings would become hopelessly gridlocked, and a possible backlash would ensue. In my opinion, she has acted absolutely appropriately to this point.
We, the people, need to FORCE impeachment proceedings by raising the loudest ruckus seen in this country since the 60's. We need to make this such a cause celebre that Congress will have to conduct hearings and even Republicans will understand that Pelosi is not leading the charge, but merely bending to the majority. We're not there yet, folks, and blaming Pelosi for this situation is a terrible waste of energy. Get out in the streets!"
* But JodyJ, then I wouldn't be able to complain that no one is doing anything because I'd be doing something.
Love Ya!
It took Dennis Kucinich to get a long overdue impeachment ON the table and it will take Dennis Kucinich to extract our nation from the mess it's in and restore the rule of law and a return of the republic.
Impeachment is off the table for one reason and one reason only: As soon as impeachment begins, the Official fairy tale about 911 will fall and when that happens, few in Congress will survive the next election and they know it.
Why Impeachment is an absolute must!
If people anywhere are allowed to keep breaking and or ignoring the laws of the land, the laws become meaningless. It permeates through all levels of society, and we end up with a lawless society. The moral fabric that governs all human beings begins to evaporate. The result is a society and a world in complete disarray. Every citizen, must demand justice, and the laws that exist must be applied too everyone equally. Those in power must not be allowed to bend and abuse them for their own personal gains. Corporations have no moral fiber other than to profit for themselves, and gain power, no matter the cost. Corporations do not deserve the rights of human beings. Its time to take America back from the lying, stealing, and most improtantly EVIL creatures who are directing her course. Our constitution must once again become the law of the land, Those who have illegally subverted the constitution, should stand trial in an open and public forum, from a Special Prosecutor, not a hand picked minion, in the once supreme court. Write your congresssman and tell them impeach now, or forever loose my vote, If we all do that, they will act.
We can't expect impeachment to happen. Why do we continue to talk about it as if it's some distant reality? Aint gonna happen folks! Were not in Kansas anymore! Or the America we thought we had,Bush has managed to destroy all that with his "Bush Agenda". Welcome to the real world! Where "We the people" is as outdated as "habeus corpus"!
It's time for Plan B,whatever that may be,because the rule of law isn't going to happen!
As much as I admire people of conviction like Kucinich, his plea on the House floor to begin impeachment proceedings will get nowhere. Asking our elected officials who are so deeply enmeshed in everything that's wrong about how politics should work in this country is fruitless. Winning the high office in 2008 is way more important to the Democratic Party leadership than bringing justice back for the American people. The Democratic controlled Congress has turned its back on the electorate that got them there, cowering to presidential wishes and threats of vetos while accepting big corporate money to run their machine. Where's our national single payer not-for-profit healthcare? Where's the end to the occupation of Iraq? Where's the end to NAFTA, the WTO, or GATT? Where's the end to tax cuts for the filthy rich? Where's the protection of Social Security? Where's the real checks and balances in choosing Attorney Generals? Where's the end to the Patriot Act and the restoration of our liberties? WHERE'S THE REAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY? The one of vision. The one that led the fight for unions. The one that protected our elderly, our homeless, our mistreated. The one that stood for human dignity and social justice. The one that stood for peace. Has the "real" Democratic Party dissolved into the likeness of a man called Kucinich? The party leadership is like Nero fiddling away while everything that needs to be addressed goes unanswered. They are a disgrace. Kucinich needs to break away from such a deceptive group.
Justice will come not from the halls of Congress but by the people themselves. Our voices must be heard in the voting booth in 2008.
dougrambo, I like plan "B". Its time to make a stand. Start the million patriot march.
I will have to agree with Dreamertoo wholeheartedly! Even though I want to see these two impeached in the worst way. I think we can expect worse in the future if something isn't done to curb the grab for power. She is caught up in a terrible situation. It would be a catastrophe for Pelosi to support impeachment. The Right wing pundit's would have a field day with it. There would be no end to their mud slinging. No doubt, the biggest causality in the war would be Pelosi. One has to look at the big picture here and use their brain. Instead of letting their passions run wild. The American people need to start demanding impeachment. It needs to be as loud as possible so these fascist's all of them get the message. We are fed up with this current administration thumbing it's nose as the law. If enough American demand impeachment and it's done right it will happen. Lawmakers will not have much choice. It will either be support it or sink.
pacplyer,
I share your disgust and anger and your plan to vote 3rd party next Nov.
I am keeping that option open myself... It is good to keep em guessing.
Impeachment anytime before than is maybe more important than who is the next prez.
That is because once the impeachment starts.. there can be no pardon period and that could start even in the last days of these criminals.
We are all tilting at windmills, but we still have a little hope and the good fight win or lose is good for our soul.
So I am glad you want to vote 3rd party at this point it shows you are angry and Care.
I just would like you to please consider that you could help the impeachment process by a little clever infiltration here and register Dem and in the beginning of next year vote for Dennis, (Mr Impeachment).... That way you will be helping us and then 8 months or so later you can vote whoever 3rd party or for yourself.
When else will we ever have a chance to vote for impeachment ourselves... Please consider to vote Dennis, the War Machines' Menace.... and you won't have to vote for a Dem in the main election at all, and you will still help the impeachment process. Please, pretty please.... You will make me very happy and we need your vote.
I would love nothing more than to see impeachment proceedings against the cabal in power in D.C.. But, alas, I tend to align with those here who have no such hope, and also those who feel that we as a nation have already gone too far to stop the momentum of our runaway corprotocracy. I hand-wrote a letter to W in the late summer of '02 and told him that I strongly felt he was about to lead the nation down a dark and terrible path with his rhetoric concerning Iraq. That same autumn, I looked out my living room window and saw a mourning dove on a limb of a tall pine in our yard. For a brief moment, I felt a sense of peace as I always did when a dove visited our little haven. Just then, a red-tailed hawk (an otherwise beautiful creature)landed in the same tree about 6 feet above the dove. I have literally seen a hawk eat a dove for lunch in winter and this dove froze like a rock. Shortly the hawk flew away. But in that moment, I knew in my gut the hawks in D.C. would rise to ascendancy and we would go to war with Iraq. But the dove survived this close encounter. I think we are in for a very dark night of the soul as a nation. I think we all sense that. It is scary, as it is when an individual suffers the same in his/her personal life. But "the darkest hour is just before dawn". That is my hope, not just for we Americans, but for the world and ALL its inhabitants. May we all find strength and light in the forgotten depths of our hearts as this terrible time worsens. The dawn WILL come, and the dove of PEACE will survive. I'm not saying we do nothing in the meantime. But we'd best prepare ourselves for an ordeal that will be difficult for all.
Peace
I very much like the idea of a Million Patriot March. Can we please make that a reality? Who's going to organise it? Let's not just talk about it, let's DO it. There's less than a year left until the next Presidential election and if we don't make our voices heard LOUD AND CLEAR that we demand truth and justice and the immediate impeachment of this criminal administration, then all we've succeeded in doing is sitting here in front of our computer screens in our pajamas sipping coffee and talking about doing something instead of ACTING.
So.....let's start the planning process for the Million Patriot March. Now. Can we get someone, a group like United for Peace and Justice or CODEPINK to get behind it and organise it? Or can we CD'er's somehow band together and plan it? Let's make sure that we get at least a million, if not more, participants. It'll be hard for anyone to ignore over a million angry citizens descending on Washington demanding our country back, believe me.
So what are we waiting for, anyway? Let's get to work!
SallyUUKent:
I'm for the march. I've participated before prior to the invasion of Iraq, but there simply were not enough (about 8-10 thousand) of us to matter. The question is indeed, how can we get the thing organized? I'm at a loss in that realm, but I'll pitch in as best I can. Heck, I'll even quit my lousy job if necessary in order to go! LETS DO IT.
Peace
Now put your money where your mouth is. DK needs your $, and your TIME. Volunteer to canvass, post signs, raise funds, make phone calls, whatever you can do...

Go Dennis, and go CommonDreamers!
We have done so much since the re-election of Bush and Co. since Nov., 2004. We the people of this country have shown our outrage against the re-election of this man and his administration. We have shown our outrage of the lies and deceits. The impeachment polls and petitions are chocked FULL of our intent.
We had another election in Nov. of 2006 -- need we say more? Who's hands is it in really? Does this country actually need a revolution to gets its message across? Will someone just come right out and say it!
Things you can do now:
1. Contribute to Dennis Kucinich's campaign (see the web site listed above in "drift's" post). Contribute $25 or $50 and get a pocket copy of the Constitution like Dennis carries around with him everywhere. Once you receive your copy in the mail, carry it with you everywhere you go.
2. Read your Constitution. You can find it online, you can find it in any old Civics text book, you can find it in books at the library - just go find it and for heaven's sake, READ IT.
3. Make copies of the Constitution and pass it out to people and tell them to READ IT as well. It's shocking how many people in this country are utterly ignorant of what is contained in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. That kind of outright ignorance is what has led to our current situation with the Bush administration. These guys are no dummies - they know that most people don't know, and worse, don't care - about what Constitutional rights they have, and they have taken advantage of that ignorance to subvert the law of the land.
Remember, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. The more people see how badly their rights have been trampled, the angrier they are likely to get. Talk up the Constitution. Post copies of it on public bulletin boards (laundromats, grocery stores, coffee houses - anywhere there's a public bulletin board available). Talk to your neighbors, talk to your friends, talk to people at church, talk to kids, talk to college students, talk to teachers and professors, spread the word: The Constitution is alive and well and is the LAW OF THE LAND. And we MUST take it back. We can start with a Million Patriot March.
And if it takes a revolution to do so, well, so be it. "Bring it on!"
--"George Bush and Dick Cheney promote an imperial presidency. They assert that the executive is the most powerful branch of government, undermining the judiciary and Congress in violation of the Constitution's bedrock principle of shared power among three co-equal branches. This subverts the very nature of our system of government."--
When the Vice President and President diss the Congress, they are dissing us -- THE PEOPLE, because Congress represents us on Capitol Hill. We live in a Democracy, and we still believe in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and in a government of THE PEOPLE, by THE PEOPLE, for THE PEOPLE, and the Vice President and President sit at the pleasure of The PEOPLE -- us!
We suffer gross injustices with the loss of our children to an ill-begotten war, and our national resources squandered to line the pockets of the super rich, and we suffer fear because the rule of law has been subjected to a dictatorial administration. Impeachment is the only way we can leave this Twilight Zone, that this administration has led us to, and although not perfect, we can return and right the wrongs of the last few administrations to build up our country and serve THE PEOPLE more humanely and justly.
With the last reports of a two-way debate on health care between the "two top" candidates, both continuing the work of the last administrations to not buck corporate greed, it is easy for any sane person to see that Dennis Kucinich isn't backed by the corporate media, or even by the Democratic Party because his administration, his presidency will bring real change to this country. Then will we have a Democracy of THE PEOPLE, by THE PEOPLE, and for THE PEOPLE -- and that's us!
