Impeachment: If Not Now, When?
Lawmakers Need to Stand Up For The Constitution and Support Impeachment
The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. -- Article II, Section 4
On Nov. 6, Rep. Dennis Kucinich introduced articles of impeachment against Vice President Dick Cheney on the floor of the House of Representatives. For one shining moment the will of the majority of Americans and the promise of this nation's founders were truly represented.
The detailed charges were solemnly read from the House podium and televised on C-Span. House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer made a motion to table the bill. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi lobbied hard for votes to table.
In a stunning turnaround, House Republicans changed strategy and voted decisively to prevent tabling the impeachment resolution.
Pelosi was defied by 85 Democratic members who voted against tabling the impeachment resolution. This includes John Conyers, chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, and six committee members. The resolution was quickly voted back to the Judiciary Committee, where it is not resting quietly.
Judiciary Committee member Bob Wexler wrote, "The American people are served well with a legitimate and thorough impeachment inquiry. I will urge the Judiciary Committee to schedule impeachment hearings immediately and not let this issue languish as it has over the last six months. Only through hearings can we begin to correct the abuses of Dick Cheney and the Bush administration."
Impeachment is squarely on the table, and momentum is building. A year ago, almost no elected official breathed the word impeachment. Now impeachment has hit the House floor, and our electeds have gone on record. Millions of Americans are demanding an end to executive abuse of power.
After six years of state of emergency, the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act, continual war and occupations, our Constitution is deeply in crisis. Americans are in danger of losing our system of government and civil rights if they do not roll back the Bush administration's assault on the rule of law.
Allowing Cheney and George W. Bush to finish their terms without being impeached means future presidents are free to copy their lawless behavior. Of course many important issues deserve the attention of Congress. But the Constitution is the foundation of our democracy, not just an issue. Without the Constitution, we have nothing.
Polls show that 74 percent of Democrats and the majority of American adults support impeaching Cheney. "Never in our history have the high crimes and misdemeanors been so flagrant, and the people of our country know it," writes local author Richard Behan.
Kucinich has targeted Cheney first, but investigations will implicate the president as well. For the first time in the history of the Gallup Poll, 50 percent of respondents say they "strongly disapprove" of the president. Richard Nixon had reached the previous high, 48 percent, just before an impeachment inquiry was launched in 1974. With these numbers, why aren't Bush and Cheney gone already?
The vice president is accused of:
purposely manipulating intelligence to fabricate a threat of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction in order to justify an attack on Iraq;
deceiving Congress about an alleged relationship between Iraq and al-Qaida;
threatening aggression against the Republic of Iran, absent any real threat to the United States.
These violations of the Constitution and international treaty are just the tip of the iceberg. More articles of impeachment can be added at any time, and ample evidence to convict is on the public record. Representatives need to introduce articles regarding:
illegal war, in violation of both international treaty and the Constitution;
widespread domestic wiretapping in violation of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a felony. Bush already has admitted to this;
condoning torture in violation of federal laws and international treaties;
rescinding habeas corpus, the cornerstone of Western law since the Magna Carta;
obstruction of justice regarding U.S. attorney firings;
subversion of the Constitution, abuse of signing statements and rescinding habeas corpus.
It's astounding that our representatives to Congress carry on with business as usual knowing that Americans lack habeas corpus and a working code of law. I want my representative, Dave Reichert, to block the doors of the House until habeas is restored as a basic human right in this nation!
In light of Bush's steady drumbeat for war with Iran, Kucinich said he will consider an impeachment resolution against him.
"Impeachment may well be the only remedy which remains to stop a war of aggression against Iran," he says.
"The most conservative principle of the Founding Fathers was distrust of unchecked power. Centuries of experience substantiated that absolute power corrupts absolutely. The Constitution embraced a separation of powers to keep the legislative, executive and judicial branches in equilibrium," Bruce Fein, a constitutional lawyer and associate deputy attorney general in the Reagan administration, said in the October 2006 edition of Washington Monthly.
If Congress were serious about oversight, there already would be dozens of bills and resolutions calling for impeachment of Bush and Cheney. The "Unitary Executive Theory" violates the principle of balance of power in the Constitution. The president cites this "unitary" power in hundreds of signing statements that say he can ignore laws passed by Congress.
The First, Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments are all now subject to the caprice of government officials. The Military Commissions Act allows U.S. citizens to be detained without due process if they are declared enemy combatants. Without our permission, this country has become an exporter of torture.
Congress has failed to provide oversight and exercise its authority to rein in a criminal administration. Only swift action on impeachment can redeem it now. The people have done the heavy work of bringing impeachment forward. Representatives need only ask if the allegations are serious enough to warrant investigations.
George Bush and Dick Cheney promote an imperial presidency. They assert that the executive is the most powerful branch of government, undermining the judiciary and Congress in violation of the Constitution's bedrock principle of shared power among three co-equal branches. This subverts the very nature of our system of government.
"This is an attempt by the president to have the final word on his own constitutional powers, which eliminates the checks and balances that keep the country a democracy. ... That's a big problem because that's essentially a dictatorship," Fein said.
Washington For Impeachment and Citizens to Impeach Bush and Cheney are working to inform the public, collect signatures to petitions, provide forums, and lobby representatives. Washington was the second state to sponsor a bill for impeachment in the state Legislature.
Washington State Democratic organizations have passed resolutions in 11 Democratic legislative districts, five counties and the Washington State Democratic Central Committee. Jay Inslee, D-Bainbridge Island, has received impeachment resolutions from almost every legislative district within his congressional district. When will he represent the will of his constituents and honor his oath to protect the Constitution?
The national movement to impeach is a non-partisan effort to restore the Constitution and the rule of law. People across the political spectrum can unite to preserve the Constitution and civil liberties given to us by the founders. Impeachment is the peaceful, orderly, constitutionally prescribed way to rid ourselves of a lawless administration.
The issue is not about removing Bush and Cheney as much as it is about preserving the Constitution and redeeming the office of the executive. The Constitution is the contract of governance between the people and the government. What happens when major portions of the contract are violated?
Congress has failed to call the president and vice president to account, so citizens must turn up the heat. Members of Congress who fail to demand investigations are covering for criminals. Every elected official has sworn an oath to "support and protect the Constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic." Anything less than impeachment and a full repudiation of the Bush administration's crimes and violations of the law is a dereliction of duty and a betrayal of the public trust.
If we want our democracy back, we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work to clean out the House.

Show AllHi all,
I think also a well written article, and so many comments right on.
cmdrmsLvr, to post of 11-25
I think you must be right to some degree...You can bet that dad's good ol' boy network is insulating GW and using it's monied influence to protect and counter any attack that would jeopardize their agenda...PNAC. I think Bob Dylan said this, "Money doesn't talk, it screams!" GW must be on Prozac by now...

Now here we go with Jane Harman's "Thought Crimes" legislation that SAILED through the House and is now in the Senate. They will probably pass it this week and Bush will sign it into law.
...and this is an indication of where we are going....it's horrifying!
pacplyer November 25th, 2007 7:45 pm
I fear you are right...It seems that nothing short of a full scale uprising and rebellion will stop this madness. And, how likely is the needed Revolution? Not....As was posited in a previous post, the "serfs" have been brainwashed, minds dulled by the droning assurances that overconsumption will lead to happiness. And they are too busy just trying to survive, running on the hamster wheel that powers the corporate business machine of the monopolistic robber barons with their oligopoly octopus arms.

I think you are right about Pelosi....I have thought about the really tough position she is in....So, yes,...it IS up to us. I've done a bit of writing letters, but as you all know, their form letters are the reply and the message is NO.
Thanks for the phone numbers....Gotta call Mr. Conyers with a stern message to get down to the business of saving the Constitution, ousting the criminals, top down, who are bankrupting our country for corporate profit, themselves.
And I say yes to Million Patriot March, not just in D.C., but in every major city across the nation. Or any city that wants to...
Starofthesea:
It has been my experience since I was a kid that birds especially can be messengers of coming significant events. It happens rarely for me, and when it happens I'm not looking for it, but it's always accompanied by a distinct gut feeling. In the spirit of this thread, I'd love to see a particularly belligerent bluejay let's say, being chased away by a gang of little house sparrows signifying Bush's impending impeachment. I believe it would do the nation much good for "the reckoning". I don't hate W, but I despise just about everything he has done since holding office. Glad will be the day when he flies the coup along with the rest of the birds of his feather.
My,how grand and glorious it would be if a million of us were gathered in DC singing that song..."all we are saying..is give peace a chance." It shivers me timbers just thinking about it!
for peace and wideness of mind...
"In a stunning turnaround, House Republicans changed strategy and voted decisively to prevent tabling the impeachment resolution." Stunning? Hmmm...sounds like a turkey shoot for those of you new to the political world...now, why do you think repubs would want to drag the tin foil hat gang into a public spectacle...I'm thinkin' it's to show off the hats....
Give peace a chance, stay single....
IMpeach them all... No, I am serious
EBONIV---Loved your hawk dove sighting----what a perfectly designed metaphor/message you were offered. No doubt you were holding your breath with that "frozen" dove. I love the feathered ones as well and see their presence always as wonderful messages from the Universe.
These are dark times "the best of times and the worst of times" depending on our capacity to hold onto our LIGHT and our faith that it will not be extinguished contrary to appearances.
All I need to re-affirm that is to hear John Lennon's beautiful anthems "Imagine," or " Give Peace a Chance" and feel again that sense of heart opening wider, and the hope.
We must work to remember as souls, to just do what we can do and then trust. Lennon's legacy, as well as Dr King' and Gandhi's, and countless other "peacemakers" has not, and will NEVER be lost. We draw on them energetically because they are within us, in the fabric of the WHOLENESS that is our very BEING.
" All we are saying....is give peace a chance."
impeach Ninny Pelosi first!!!!!
by taking impeachment off the table SHE gave George W. Bush immunity not only for previous impeachable offences and current an on going impeachable offences but also for future impeachable offences.
Just what in the hell does George W. have on her from those warrantless NSA intercepts before 9/11/2001 that the Congress now seeks to immunize against prosecution (hell if he had shoplifted a candy bar they'd take him to court).
I think every Congressman that votes immunity for this GANG deserves to be thrown out of office whether they are Republcan or Republicans claiming to be Democrats.
With Pelosi's stand of "see no evil" one has to wonder whether a President Hillary Clinton will follow her husband's stance and cover up for another Bush? (see Consortiumnews.com, Robert Parry, "How Bill Clinton Let Bush I Off Hook," Nov 6, 2007)
I am all for the Million Patriot March. If anyone knows how to get this thing started, please let me know, and I will do anything I can to help, and I would most definitely participate. You can email me at petsr4ever@hotmail.com
I might be old, but I was a child of the '60's, and I still got it in me.
Yes, we are the revolution and Please Keep up the spirit, Folks.

This subverts the very nature of our system of government."--
When the Vice President and President diss the Congress, they are dissing us -- THE PEOPLE, because Congress represents us on Capitol Hill. We live in a Democracy, and we still believe in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and in a government of THE PEOPLE, by THE PEOPLE, for THE PEOPLE, and the Vice President and President sit at the pleasure of The PEOPLE -- us!
We suffer gross injustices with the loss of our children to an ill-begotten war, and our national resources squandered to line the pockets of the super rich, and we suffer fear because the rule of law has been subjected to a dictatorial administration. Impeachment is the only way we can leave this Twilight Zone, that this administration has led us to, and although not perfect, we can return and right the wrongs of the last few administrations to build up our country and serve THE PEOPLE more humanely and justly.
With the last reports of a two-way debate on health care between the "two top" candidates, both continuing the work of the last administrations to not buck corporate greed, it is easy for any sane person to see that Dennis Kucinich isn't backed by the corporate media, or even by the Democratic Party because his administration, his presidency will bring real change to this country. Then will we have a Democracy of THE PEOPLE, by THE PEOPLE, and for THE PEOPLE -- and that's us!
Things you can do now:
1. Contribute to Dennis Kucinich's campaign (see the web site listed above in "drift's" post). Contribute $25 or $50 and get a pocket copy of the Constitution like Dennis carries around with him everywhere. Once you receive your copy in the mail, carry it with you everywhere you go.
2. Read your Constitution. You can find it online, you can find it in any old Civics text book, you can find it in books at the library - just go find it and for heaven's sake, READ IT.
3. Make copies of the Constitution and pass it out to people and tell them to READ IT as well. It's shocking how many people in this country are utterly ignorant of what is contained in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. That kind of outright ignorance is what has led to our current situation with the Bush administration. These guys are no dummies - they know that most people don't know, and worse, don't care - about what Constitutional rights they have, and they have taken advantage of that ignorance to subvert the law of the land.
Remember, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER. The more people see how badly their rights have been trampled, the angrier they are likely to get. Talk up the Constitution. Post copies of it on public bulletin boards (laundromats, grocery stores, coffee houses - anywhere there's a public bulletin board available). Talk to your neighbors, talk to your friends, talk to people at church, talk to kids, talk to college students, talk to teachers and professors, spread the word: The Constitution is alive and well and is the LAW OF THE LAND. And we MUST take it back. We can start with a Million Patriot March.
And if it takes a revolution to do so, well, so be it. "Bring it on!"
We have done so much since the re-election of Bush and Co. since Nov., 2004. We the people of this country have shown our outrage against the re-election of this man and his administration. We have shown our outrage of the lies and deceits. The impeachment polls and petitions are chocked FULL of our intent.
We had another election in Nov. of 2006 -- need we say more? Who's hands is it in really? Does this country actually need a revolution to gets its message across? Will someone just come right out and say it!
Now put your money where your mouth is. DK needs your $, and your TIME. Volunteer to canvass, post signs, raise funds, make phone calls, whatever you can do...

Go Dennis, and go CommonDreamers!
SallyUUKent:
I'm for the march. I've participated before prior to the invasion of Iraq, but there simply were not enough (about 8-10 thousand) of us to matter. The question is indeed, how can we get the thing organized? I'm at a loss in that realm, but I'll pitch in as best I can. Heck, I'll even quit my lousy job if necessary in order to go! LETS DO IT.
Peace
I very much like the idea of a Million Patriot March. Can we please make that a reality? Who's going to organise it? Let's not just talk about it, let's DO it. There's less than a year left until the next Presidential election and if we don't make our voices heard LOUD AND CLEAR that we demand truth and justice and the immediate impeachment of this criminal administration, then all we've succeeded in doing is sitting here in front of our computer screens in our pajamas sipping coffee and talking about doing something instead of ACTING.
So.....let's start the planning process for the Million Patriot March. Now. Can we get someone, a group like United for Peace and Justice or CODEPINK to get behind it and organise it? Or can we CD'er's somehow band together and plan it? Let's make sure that we get at least a million, if not more, participants. It'll be hard for anyone to ignore over a million angry citizens descending on Washington demanding our country back, believe me.
So what are we waiting for, anyway? Let's get to work!
I would love nothing more than to see impeachment proceedings against the cabal in power in D.C.. But, alas, I tend to align with those here who have no such hope, and also those who feel that we as a nation have already gone too far to stop the momentum of our runaway corprotocracy. I hand-wrote a letter to W in the late summer of '02 and told him that I strongly felt he was about to lead the nation down a dark and terrible path with his rhetoric concerning Iraq. That same autumn, I looked out my living room window and saw a mourning dove on a limb of a tall pine in our yard. For a brief moment, I felt a sense of peace as I always did when a dove visited our little haven. Just then, a red-tailed hawk (an otherwise beautiful creature)landed in the same tree about 6 feet above the dove. I have literally seen a hawk eat a dove for lunch in winter and this dove froze like a rock. Shortly the hawk flew away. But in that moment, I knew in my gut the hawks in D.C. would rise to ascendancy and we would go to war with Iraq. But the dove survived this close encounter. I think we are in for a very dark night of the soul as a nation. I think we all sense that. It is scary, as it is when an individual suffers the same in his/her personal life. But "the darkest hour is just before dawn". That is my hope, not just for we Americans, but for the world and ALL its inhabitants. May we all find strength and light in the forgotten depths of our hearts as this terrible time worsens. The dawn WILL come, and the dove of PEACE will survive. I'm not saying we do nothing in the meantime. But we'd best prepare ourselves for an ordeal that will be difficult for all.
Peace
pacplyer,
I share your disgust and anger and your plan to vote 3rd party next Nov.
I am keeping that option open myself... It is good to keep em guessing.
Impeachment anytime before than is maybe more important than who is the next prez.
That is because once the impeachment starts.. there can be no pardon period and that could start even in the last days of these criminals.
We are all tilting at windmills, but we still have a little hope and the good fight win or lose is good for our soul.
So I am glad you want to vote 3rd party at this point it shows you are angry and Care.
I just would like you to please consider that you could help the impeachment process by a little clever infiltration here and register Dem and in the beginning of next year vote for Dennis, (Mr Impeachment).... That way you will be helping us and then 8 months or so later you can vote whoever 3rd party or for yourself.
When else will we ever have a chance to vote for impeachment ourselves... Please consider to vote Dennis, the War Machines' Menace.... and you won't have to vote for a Dem in the main election at all, and you will still help the impeachment process. Please, pretty please.... You will make me very happy and we need your vote.
I will have to agree with Dreamertoo wholeheartedly! Even though I want to see these two impeached in the worst way. I think we can expect worse in the future if something isn't done to curb the grab for power. She is caught up in a terrible situation. It would be a catastrophe for Pelosi to support impeachment. The Right wing pundit's would have a field day with it. There would be no end to their mud slinging. No doubt, the biggest causality in the war would be Pelosi. One has to look at the big picture here and use their brain. Instead of letting their passions run wild. The American people need to start demanding impeachment. It needs to be as loud as possible so these fascist's all of them get the message. We are fed up with this current administration thumbing it's nose as the law. If enough American demand impeachment and it's done right it will happen. Lawmakers will not have much choice. It will either be support it or sink.
dougrambo, I like plan "B". Its time to make a stand. Start the million patriot march.
As much as I admire people of conviction like Kucinich, his plea on the House floor to begin impeachment proceedings will get nowhere. Asking our elected officials who are so deeply enmeshed in everything that's wrong about how politics should work in this country is fruitless. Winning the high office in 2008 is way more important to the Democratic Party leadership than bringing justice back for the American people. The Democratic controlled Congress has turned its back on the electorate that got them there, cowering to presidential wishes and threats of vetos while accepting big corporate money to run their machine. Where's our national single payer not-for-profit healthcare? Where's the end to the occupation of Iraq? Where's the end to NAFTA, the WTO, or GATT? Where's the end to tax cuts for the filthy rich? Where's the protection of Social Security? Where's the real checks and balances in choosing Attorney Generals? Where's the end to the Patriot Act and the restoration of our liberties? WHERE'S THE REAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY? The one of vision. The one that led the fight for unions. The one that protected our elderly, our homeless, our mistreated. The one that stood for human dignity and social justice. The one that stood for peace. Has the "real" Democratic Party dissolved into the likeness of a man called Kucinich? The party leadership is like Nero fiddling away while everything that needs to be addressed goes unanswered. They are a disgrace. Kucinich needs to break away from such a deceptive group.
Justice will come not from the halls of Congress but by the people themselves. Our voices must be heard in the voting booth in 2008.
We can't expect impeachment to happen. Why do we continue to talk about it as if it's some distant reality? Aint gonna happen folks! Were not in Kansas anymore! Or the America we thought we had,Bush has managed to destroy all that with his "Bush Agenda". Welcome to the real world! Where "We the people" is as outdated as "habeus corpus"!
It's time for Plan B,whatever that may be,because the rule of law isn't going to happen!
Why Impeachment is an absolute must!
If people anywhere are allowed to keep breaking and or ignoring the laws of the land, the laws become meaningless. It permeates through all levels of society, and we end up with a lawless society. The moral fabric that governs all human beings begins to evaporate. The result is a society and a world in complete disarray. Every citizen, must demand justice, and the laws that exist must be applied too everyone equally. Those in power must not be allowed to bend and abuse them for their own personal gains. Corporations have no moral fiber other than to profit for themselves, and gain power, no matter the cost. Corporations do not deserve the rights of human beings. Its time to take America back from the lying, stealing, and most improtantly EVIL creatures who are directing her course. Our constitution must once again become the law of the land, Those who have illegally subverted the constitution, should stand trial in an open and public forum, from a Special Prosecutor, not a hand picked minion, in the once supreme court. Write your congresssman and tell them impeach now, or forever loose my vote, If we all do that, they will act.
Impeachment is off the table for one reason and one reason only: As soon as impeachment begins, the Official fairy tale about 911 will fall and when that happens, few in Congress will survive the next election and they know it.
It took Dennis Kucinich to get a long overdue impeachment ON the table and it will take Dennis Kucinich to extract our nation from the mess it's in and restore the rule of law and a return of the republic.
JodyJ (November 25th, 2007 9:17 pm) ..
"I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment. If both Bush and Cheney are impeached and forced to leave office, Pelosi would be elevated to the Presidency. If Pelosi breathed one word in favor of impeachment, the Republicans would howl that she was moving to take over the country through the back door, any impeachment proceedings would become hopelessly gridlocked, and a possible backlash would ensue. In my opinion, she has acted absolutely appropriately to this point.
We, the people, need to FORCE impeachment proceedings by raising the loudest ruckus seen in this country since the 60's. We need to make this such a cause celebre that Congress will have to conduct hearings and even Republicans will understand that Pelosi is not leading the charge, but merely bending to the majority. We're not there yet, folks, and blaming Pelosi for this situation is a terrible waste of energy. Get out in the streets!"
* But JodyJ, then I wouldn't be able to complain that no one is doing anything because I'd be doing something.
Love Ya!
bbr-001, you said...
"Maybe the Dem leadership just wants to avoid this mess and just wait for Dr. Evil and the Moron to leave. (Unfortunately, the neocons are grooming revision 2.0 in Giuliani.)"
80% of the voting in 2008 will be on the hackable machines. They have stolen the elections before -- even stole some of the seats in 2006 -- we cannot wait for another stolen election. (And anyone in NYC who remembers Giuliani pre-9-11 knows he was in the toilet poll-wise. We do not need his kind as President.)
Yes -- call about impeachment AND
Write the LOCAL offices. The Washington snail mail is still screwed up from when the anthrax was sent out (by GOP operatives?? -- remember only Dems got it in the mail and some postal workers were killed).
Send in those Democratic contribution envelopes with the word IMPEACHMENT in it instead of a check.
And yes, keep reminding the Congress and fellow Democrats of what John Nichols said, impeachment itself is cleansing, regardless of the outcome of the vote. Still, if the American public sees all the charges clearly spelled out for them, can their representatives do anything less than vote to convict?
When Pelosi, said impeachment was off the table, I went through the roof!
What right does she have to decide for the American people on any issue,
especially one as important as this.
It goes too show you, the arrogance and total disregard, that Washington insiders have for the true wishes of the people.
If this government was truly a democracy and our representatives were true representatives in that democracy: Bush and Cheney would been gone long ago.
They philosophy, is vote for me and then be on your way, we have no more
use for you.
The masses are to be seen and not heard!
There are still a lot of couch potatoes watching O'Reilly and Hannity on Fox. These people are vocal and vote. (Another T-Day dinner ruined!) They also challenge the democrats sincerity when they can cheer a man who is a serial philanderer, sexual abuser, possibly even a rapist, who lied under oath and used thug-like tactics to try and keep victim Cathy Willey quiet. Not to mention his sleazy lawyer wife who doesn't seem to realize any of that ever happened.
These folks buy into Iraq, and even the bombing Iran, as defense of the US and Israel, and they consider impeacment of Bush as pratically treason.
Maybe the Dem leadership just wants to avoid this mess and just wait for Dr. Evil and the Moron to leave. (Unfortunately, the neocons are grooming revision 2.0 in Giuliani.)
Remember eugenics, the forced sterilization of the bottom ten percent of the population. In theory, by continuing to sterilize the bottom ten percent the result would be an ideal Nordic population. Now imagine doing the same to the vocal ten percent to achieve a more orderly Corporate State. Nothing is off the table. There is no end to where the Bush, Cheney mindset will lead. Act while you can.
Let's be real Pelosi is one of the best people we have in Congress too bad she's really botched the impeachment issue, she's too old and weak to be fighting for progressives, she's had her day and it's time she retire. We need new blood in the party, tough, smart, white knight types like Dennis Kucinich, people who put their integrity and the intregity of the American people ahead of money. Impeachment is important to America so we can get back some of the honour we've lost. Americans are killing children around the world for big oil, the Pentagon Contractors and the FED. Our reward will be a recession for this loyalty to evil and we deserve it. Hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi and Lebanese children are dead or maimed severely for life because of American greed...we need to stop this madness.
Impeachment on the table NOW and Kucinich President in 2009 is the only way we can save our honour and thus our society. To start repairing the horrible immoral actions we've perpetrated.... Vote Kucinich, campaign for Kucinich, fight for progressive values, change a Cheney Bush America into a Kucinich America, we can do it, don't give up the fight!
Well richsmith2,
Maybe you're right. Maybe I am beleiving tall cooked up stories about "Mr Smith Goes to Washington." Maybe you're right that each congressman like D.K. operates in a vacume completely unafected by the party machine that put him into office and the big money interest that allows his bills to go to the floor.... maybe he naively votes his gut without checking to see if he's about to step into a Battle at Little Big Horn....
But I really doubt it. Conspiracy? No. No. It's just part of normal Potomic two-step business. Contract with America? Well it dorked me so hard I still can't walk straight. Democrats in Congress? We'll have ourselves a grand investigation, says Henry Waxman; and then nothing happens. "Just elect me!" cries Polosi, "and then Bush is going to pay." And then? Nothing happens. I wish we'd all have been seeing conspiracies before Iraq. Don't you? I suspect the reason no one's calling for D.K's head is because he's one of them. I mean: Nothing at all out of the White House. Not even a phuk you from Shotgun Dick. Very fishy indeed.
But I could be wrong. I've been lied to and cheated and buttphucked for so long by so many Dems and Repukes that I don't even know which end is up anymore. In fact, I'd be shocked if they didn't try something like this: to throw progressives off the trail and up the wrong tree.
I'm not voting for Dennis, because he's part of the party who lied to America and took impeachment off the table. Want my opinion? Don't be a sapp for another 27 years (shrub or clinton in top office 27 years now.) Don't vote for any corporate party member.
Vote third party (if you even can on a diebold computer voting machine!)
I know, I know...
Diebold. Another conspiracy theory.....
(But the CEO of Diebold has admitted to having a "mission to put GWB in the whitehouse." So does that make it a kooky conspiracy theory even if it's actually true?)
Nice work pleasethink. Nice work everyone. I think I've found my calling as a cheerleader. Rah Rah CD GO! Impeach, obviously. DK - yes. I'm predicting Giuliani though for '08. Sorry to say it. What are we going to do about it?
there exists a majority in America that is willing to put up with what we can consider to be (to them, as) an acceptable level of tyranny and neo-fascism.
Why wasn't Bush impeached years ago?
That fact that we now have a laundry list of negatives is staggering to my mind. He should have been impeached long ago and this is why he will get away with it - has gotten away. This administration failed to protect American soil resulting in the 9/11 attacks; they played upon white anglo-saxon prejudices and force-fed the public countless boogie-man stories to justify the invasion of Iraq and the insane occupation of that country; they have failed to bring the 9/11 culprits to justice; they have attacked the poor and middle-classes at home through spending cuts to the social safety net and yet, like the legions that supported Hitler and his Nazi party too many people are not only willing to allow these circumstances to continue, but also encourage them.
The fascists again have the power. There is nothing left to say.

"I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment."
Pelosi never needed to advocate impeachment, she just needed to not actively block it which is exactly what she did when she publicly stated that "impeachment is off the table".
Then not long after that she and her hubby attended a private dinner at the invitation of George Bush and Laura at the White House. Anyone who thinks there isn't a bunch of rot in Washington needs to take off their blinders.
Lobo Gris
BUSH AND CHENEY FOR PRISON!
pleasethank, pleasethink for the phone #'s list. I'll try calling a new group of numbskulls to try and penetrate the dense fog.
We still need to try inherent contempt on Rove, Miers and whoever else didn't show up when subpoenaed by Congress. Would you not crack at least a Guiness Book type smile in your neo-con hardened face to see Carl Rove sitting in the White house basement slammer. Right next to Cheney. Sweet! I would still recommend they get a fair trial even though I would bet the farm on the guilty verdict. So much for dreamin. For now at least. As soon as the impeachment inquiry points to 'hell yes' the troops would already be coming home. Sweeter still!
You stttuttteer MCONNE15? mamameee tatatatooo. Of course both of your posts were excellent.
You're right CLAUDIUS. If we don't have a depression within six months, I'll eat my shorts. This one will make the one of 29 seem like a spring picnic. That is not an exaggeration in my opinion. Of course I am wrong at times. ______ See there, I just was.
I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment.
I agree with Jodi J that it will take a push from people. RE Pelosi advocating impeachment: She coulda, shoulda oh, only if she woulda kept her mouth shut! She did not have to volunteer the "Off the table" crap (and this before she was re elected and became speaker, yet) Just stand to the side and let the chips fall. It would have been a significant difference.
People in power (especially the Dems) are always reluctant to enter into an impeachment battle. It takes a lot of prodding.
As John Nichols says ("The Genius of Impeachment) it does not even require an impeachment "victory" to matter. It brings the issue to center stage, shines light where it is needed, and in the case of legitimate impeachments, suddenly elevates the party moving forward into relevance. The democrats could finally be about something! And we'd begin to hope we might get our Democracy and Constitution back.
Ya think? __ Maybe they actually work for him and Cheney, a sub of Halliburton of course. That should be spelled, Hellsabustin.
I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment.

JODY J. If the impeachnment process would begin, the truths would come out. There would be more singing in Wshington than with the Morman Tabernacle Choir or The Fred Waring Orchestra. The press wold have to cover it and the house of cards would tumble. Before it was half over, Nancy Pelosi would be a heroine, a Valkire. She'd be a fne president once the pressure was off. ___ Heck, Paris Hilton would be in comparrison to Bush.
Oh, and Ken (porn) Starr works for Blackwater now.
I think Bill Clinton testified because there was a provision at the time for a special prosecutor. This provision may have expired? All congress would have to do is operationally define the case and turn it over to a special prosecutor to see if there is merit for a proceeding.
Ahem, and even the easter bunny could do that.
Clinton didn't have Rove advising him KERMEL, besides he didn't do it. ___ Monica did and Bill thought Ted was going to give her a lift home.
It is not up to Pelosi, shes not the factor, Conyers is the only person on this here planet, that is holding up the legal process.
Out Pelosi and In Sheehan, for starters. And, if the Democratic party doesn't want Kucinich, then write him in unless he runs as an Independent. Kucinich is the only one who represents the poor and middle class.
Impeachment or no impeachment, there is one undisputable fact: this country is going broke. The damage already has been done, and it is a matter of time for everything else to play out. Even if you impeach Bush and Cheney, the damage already has been done, and in fact, may be irreversible. Thanks to a complicit Congress, we already may have passed the point of no return. The fact of the matter as we all know it, is these crooks needed to be ousted years ago. The system already is well entrenched and unlikely to change unless someone places dynamite at the foundation to bring the whole corrupt structure down. We must convince our families and friends to throw out this entire lot of politicians (with the exception of Kucinich) and elect new faces with new ideas. This is not to deny impeachment. But it might be too little too late. We need to go much deeper to shake the tree so all of the rotten fruit falls to the ground. The only way to do that is to install new leadership. Cindy Sheehan would be a great start!
Does anyone know why Bill Clinton testified under oath in the first place? Why did he not refuse to go under oath as Bush and Cheny have done and just thumb their noses at Congress and the people and tell them to go to H_____? Surely the same executive privilege was available to him as was to Bush. Just wondering why the difference.
HEAVY RUNNER. They are not only illegitimate, they are an abortion. What can we do because they are illegitimate? Take it to the Supreme Court?
Catch 22 all over again.
To help keep the drumbeat going, and getting those couch potatoes in your life on the phone (dial for them! If the USA is to join the rest of the world it had better kick out of office all the Republicans and most of the Democrats and form a new party. The whole election process needs to be changed where money has no corrupting influence. The FCC, as a part of the granting of a licence should demand free advertising for everybody regardless of their supposed poll numbers.
Impeaching Bush and Cheney now is like taking an eye out of a potato when the whole potato is rotten. The root cause of most of the problems now facing the USA cannot and will not be cured by an " election " under the present arrangements, it will just change the names of the criminals.
Ted Rall raised an important point in his column last week. He pointed out that the entire Bush Presidency is illegitimate because the U.S. Supreme Court did not have jurisdiction to intervene in the State's Rights issue of the Florida state election of Electoral College delegates in 2000.
Great article, and passionate responses all the way down to this one. I believe Impeachment can happen much faster than Nov., 2008. If the American couch potato would get off of their television watching backsides and pitch in , we could have them gone by spring. For every 5 people who call and write their Congresspersons, there are 95 who don't even know that they have 2 Senators and a Congressperson. This Country can't afford one more DAY with these cowardly henchmen in charge. I am consistently stunned to see America sending george bush around the world to negotiate anything with anybody. Delay, Rove, Cheney, Gonzales, Cunningham, Myers, Libby, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, (Sessions should have gone to jail with Siegleman, or without him) Orin Hatch, you've got to be kidding, and top it off with Bush? This ought to be the FBI's most wanted list. And you know I forgot at least a dozen, or two.
Come on the REST OF AMERICA. History is happening right before your eyes and it's not a done deal yet. We need your help. Write your first letter to Congress and call for once. Most Common Dreams readers probably have but not All of you yet. Get your dead head roommate or family member to kick in. Congress dosn't respond well to 5%, but they have never seen 20%. Send a donation to the one Congressperson with the guts to give this article it's so important subject. Dennis, Go, Dennis Kucinich. Kucinich and Somebody or Somebody and Kucinich. You know Hillary dosn't want him. He's up there talking the TRUTH and Americans, the 95ers don't recognize it. And to you naysayers that say impeachment won't happen, please step aside, you are in the way.
Start the marching IMAGINEUSA, I've done that more than once, but I see you also are here clicking away on your computer board.
Mary lou, maybe we do need a military coup as big bad bob suggests? Maybe we do need a cruel military rule imposed on us? Maybe we do need to see if the loud-mouth pro-gun types have the balls to form militias to stand up to and fight the junta? (And lose.... hand guns/rifles are no match for military weapons, but that's another thread). Maybe we do need another civil war, but not between north and south, but between brothers and sisters in and out of uniform. Maybe we do need millions of American civilians killed in the name of "freedom" before we wake up from this nightmare?
It may seem hopeless, but we have to keep writing, calling, and fighting for what we know is right, especially in these darkest moments. So many people in this country do know what is what--we are merely being censored by the political and media establishments that want to keep us dumb and under control. Keep fighting. Time's over for cynical "it doesn't matter, give it up" kinds of statements. Do anything you can to make a difference, even if it is as little as forwarding this piece to one person who hasn't had time or energy to think about impeachment b/c he or she is working 2-3 jobs, along with a phone number or email address for someone on the Judiciary Committee. Time for action, not cynicism.
I simply sent this to Walter B. Jones who is my Congressman in North Carolina...
Are you a gutless, spineless coward who will not do his job or will you do what you were sworn to do and protect the constitution of the United States of America and get those criminals out of the Whitehouse??!!!
"Congress has failed to call the president and vice president to account, so citizens must turn up the heat.
If we want our democracy back, we need to roll up our sleeves and get to work to clean out the House."
I really feel for my American freinds. You obviously elected the people needed to take care of this matter for you.But after Pelosi and her cronies met with Bush behind closed doors and he showed them the balance book everything changed. The fact that the U.S.A. is teetering on the brink of a financial collapse changed their thinking. With the dollar being slowly left to disintegrate against other monetary instruments the American consumer is soon to be in for a new and rude awakening. This has all been in the mix since the gold standard was eliminated. The standard of living you have had good for so many years was bought and paid for by the hard work of the citizens of other nations.Im afraid that the american way of life is not the idyllic way of sustaining the future. And now,as can be seen by the rising standard of living in China, is time for the shoe to go on the other foot.
Look beyond your borders. I realise that this is something Americans don't do but you must.
Democracy is dying everywhere. Here in Australia our government under Howard followed Bush and co into Iraq as did Blair in the UK.
The key is the media. I read Linda Boyd's article and it was logical, correct and a breath of fresh air but it just doesn't compete with 'the call to fear' being used by the media.
The public are no longer informed, they are entertained and sites like this one are marginalised by a media that use mythology and semiotics to tell 'the average Joe' what he thinks. Like the control that the circus had over Ancient Rome, Western democracy is being subverted by a lust for sensation.
For over a centuary the USA has lead the world but like Rome before it, it is decaying. The corporate model is failing humanity because the corporations are owned by no one. Fox is not American and yet it tells you what to think and what is important. I wonder how the men who signed the Declaration of Independence would think of Rupert Murdock?
I am mystified why no one seems to understand that Nancy Pelosi is in a terrible place to be advocating for impeachment.
Get out in the streets!
I can't believe that lying about consentual sex with another adult is grounds for impeachment and lying about the reasons we went to war and lying about outing a CIA covert op is just fine. This is just insane. We are truly a fascist country if they get away with this. IMPEACH!!
Impeachment is off the table because we are not the constituents of the Democratic Party. Their real constituents are big corporation, big money, military industrial complex and the Israeli lobby.
Do you really think the above groups want Bush impeached? No? Then stop lamenting.
The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors. – Article II, Section 4
Your comments strike me as conspiracy theory out of control. DK, as you refer to Kucinich, is not a plant. He is the only Democrat in Congress who has the courage to formally propose impeachment. Your assertion that he is part of some Democratic cabal is absurd. Most of his positions run counter to those of the Democratic establishment. He didn't need Pelosi's permission to introduce articles. He did that solo. I'm sure she actually quite peeved he's done so. He is fighting within the only party of a two party system that is not a criminal organization. Cindy Sheehan is looking to contest Pelosi's seat because she too realizes that the only way to fight the Democratic status quo is from within.
Now would be good and make them pay restitution for war profiteering and raiding the U.S. Treasury and the American people. Also they should do community service for the poor, aged, and children with no healthcare that have survived their brutal policies.
So is it the case that with his first assault on the law he wiretapped all the opposition members and whenever he found something usable he, used it to blackmail that member?
i believe a huge part of the american population will suddenly go blind when they are brounght forth from darkness and forced to look upon the bright light of freedom!
Great posts All,
I especially liked SallyUUKent's clear language and agree that this whole thing (impeachment) is just to keep us pacified until the Fortune 500 can select their next crop of political puppets. D.K. would not be permitted to embarrass Polosi, the speaker, if he were not a plant to appease us. He works for the Democrats. The Dems know we the people are pissed. D.K. is a Red Herring, imho, and he will not succeed in impeachment unless the DemoCon party (which is the same thing as the Fortune 500,) decides they will allow this administration to be sacrificed, in order to maintain control OF US.
The Dems are pumping you up with False Hope just like they did the last time. Fool me once... shame on you; Fool me twice... shame on all of us.
Maybe they're right after all. Maybe the unwashed masses aren't smart enough to vote. We are so easily fooled by some angry words coming out of Polosi's mouth: "Bush is going to Pay!" she frothed. Then, "impeachment was off the table" (so was curbing war spending.) To be fooled again by these agents of Globalmutinational monsters.....
The definition of insanity (and believe me, Washington is making us all insane) is to keep doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. Why do we keep voting for the corporate parties? We know our problems in the USA run deeper than political corruption. We have corporate contagion at every level in life. They own us everywhere we go. At work. Shopping. Banking. Motoring. Getting our news. Paying our taxes. Everywhere you go, there's the stink of the long arm of monopolistic robber barons with their oligopoly octopus arms in the cookie jar.
My fellow railroad victims, I fear we are back in the 1800's under the merciless whip of the Big Four (the infamous J.P. Morgan and his robber baron henchmen.)
The question is: if impeachment fails, what are you going to do about it?
pac
"In a stunning turnaround, House Republicans changed strategy and voted decisively to prevent tabling the impeachment resolution."
This is the silliest article I've ever read on Common Dreams. What kind of drugs is the author on? The vote not to table was a parliamentary trick to make sure that it would never again meet the public eye. The Democrats are in collusion with their corporate sponsors to make sure that impeachment is never discussed in Congress because it would open too many cans of worms on both sides of the floor.
impeachment proceedings will begin in the spring ..but wont conclude before they are out of office...just a guess
You are not going to protect the Constitution setting behind your computer. Start the Million Patriot March and take your country back before the supreme court takes your gun rights away.
Well, WILLY BILL and SALLY UU KENT have sure explained it like it is.
Who asked about Conyers and what has he done wrong? Conyers is the worst of them all, he alone has the power to put the impeachment bill on the floor for a Congressional vote and he illegally refuses to do it. He's the traior Cindy handed the petitions to and was arrested for legally doing the duty we should all be doing.
Besides which, even if by some miracle it was decided that impeachment will go forward, it will take the better part of a year - or more - before it could even begin to proceed, by which time a new administration will either have been elected or inaugurated, rendering the entire impeachment process moot.
So, another reason it's not going to happen now. Too late. They dithered too long and blew it for all of us. Had they begun working on this a year ago after mid-term elections, we might have stood a chance of seeing these people impeached, but now it's too late. The best we can hope for is some kind of reckoning after they've all retired to their ranchettes, and by then, they'll be immune to prosecution anyway.
That, friends, is the sad reality of this whole affair. And that's why no impeachments will be forthcoming, as much as we'd all like to see it happen. Blame Dems for sitting on their hands and not working harder to bring allies from across the aisle to bolster their numbers and assure a better chance of succeeding in beginning the process of impeachment.
In short, too late. Too late. What a crying shame. Future administrations will take this as permission to become unitary executives and to use signing statements to break the law and subvert the Constitution and the will of the people. It will take impeaching future administrations to restore the Constitution. BushCo won't suffer the ignomany of being hauled before an impeachment hearing. They know this, and they know that they have set the stage for a possible impeachment of a future Democratic administration who will want to use the same tools that BushCo put in place.
And oh, they just can't wait to see the day that it happens to reclaim their power. They'll all point and say, "Told you so! You want us back because these guys screwed up!" And people will be stupid enough to vote these people back into office again, because they'll make sure that there's some calamity that assures their return to power and they'll use fear like a hammer to say, "See, Democrats are soft on terrorism! We'll protect you, just you wait and see!"
And of course, they'll find a way to maneuver themselves back into power again. They aren't going to go away THAT easily, trust me. They may make it look like they're all retiring to their ranchettes, but they'll be busy crafting their return somehow. Remember, K Street still exists. Sure, they got rid of DeLay and Abramoff, but don't count them out yet. Grover Nordquist is still out there with his devious power-mad schemes. Be afraid, be very afraid of Nordquist. This is the guy, after all, who wanted to reduce the government to the size of where he could drown it in the bathtub, and that speaks volumes. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him. He's the one you all should be afraid of. I suspect that he and Rove are busy plotting something evil and devious.
Scumbags, all.

Peace Activist Cindy Sheehan Arrested at Congress
by Thomas Ferraro
So much Lighted, guided energy and sense, issuing from the man Kucinich.
So much of what he says is very 'right', and sane and sound.
Against him stand the united forces of darkness: the 'Puss-edential' team of depraved harlots and brigands, (which include the dire mess media).
Who will win out, and how? -The demented 'Goliath', ~ or a heroic 'David'?
Will America rise to the occasion, and get shot of the nest of scorpions at the helm? or will they again succumb to the evil will of the ruinous muck at the top?
America stands at a crossroads; the world holds it's breath, waiting and hoping that she will choose more wisely this time round.
The game is not lost, hope is not lost, and the fight between darkness and Light is very far from over.
Yes, there are many things we cannot easily shift and fix overnight, but what *we* have, that the Gray House villains don't, -is humanity's *massed intent* on our side, - which at root is a wish to live in peaceful co-existence with our fellow beings.
That, (although it is often painted differently by the media for their own dark ends) is the basic wish of the majority of the people alive on this planet: - their overwhelming wish is to be rid of all these ridiculous wars...
We could take comfort and hope from that massed intent?
We can usefully try to ensure that we never let up for a moment in our concerted WILL to see Light win out over the present crazed hell-hounds who have (temporarily) gained access to power in America.
"Every dog has it's day" ... but soon those dogs will be gone.
~ It's up to each of us to never give up the fight to ensure DK (and his like) are soon in the seats of power, putting things back as they should be.
We can make it happen.
Believe it ... and let's *make* it happen, using ALL the means available to us!
I've written to Pelosi, Conyers, Hoyer, Emmanuel, my own Congressmen, and others, that an avalanche of Presidential pardons will soon derail further investigations and end hopes of accountability. Since only impeachment is immune to such pardons, IMPEACH NOW, or forever admit complicity in subversion of the Constitution and profiteers' war-crimes. The evidence is vast and multi-leveled, but could be an order of magnitude greater if not for the contempt of Congressional subpoenas, "lost" e-mails, and all-round stonewalling, impeachable themselves! Other important legislation, even if heroic efforts get a veto-proof vote, are subject to yet another un-Constitutional signing statement! Is Congress afraid of this administration? Justifiably, considering what happened to Max Cleland, Cynthia McKinney, Tom Daschle, the Governor of Alabama, and the CEO of Qwest (and perhaps Paul Wellstone and the anthrax attacks), but the nation, the Constitution, and the world need us to live up to being the "home of the brave." Please honor the oath to defend the Constitution.
Like night and day- To think of the mud the Repugs dragged Bill Clinton through for getting a blow job from little miss chubby cheeks...something Hillery prolly wouldn't do for him anyway.
Let's remember the REAL reason Clinton was impeached. He committed perjury.
At his deposition: "That all depends on what the meaning of is is."
He didn't get the name "Slick Willie" for nothing!!
Check out the YouTube of him telling an audience member to, "Shut up!" when the person asked him a question about 9/11 being an "inside job". Then he said, "How DARE you?!"
Now here we go with Jane Harman's "Thought Crimes" legislation that SAILED through the House and is now in the Senate. They will probably pass it this week and Bush will sign it into law.
Remember Ari Fleischer the day after 9/11 at the press conference? "You'd better watch what you say and watch what you do."
Well, that "Big Brother" nightmare is about to become our collective nightmare.
With Bush Sr., Clinton, Bush Jr. and Hillary, someone a few posts back mentioned we will have a dynasty.
And slick Willie and George Sr. are joined at the hip.
Something here stinks to high Heaven.
In the meantime I'm still waiting for Commondreams to follow through on the idea of typing in your zip and finding a coffee shop nearby for Commondreamers to go commiserate.
The sound of crickets.........
Guess they want to keep us in our pajamas and typing to each other.
Linda has it correct. Bush and Cheney are domestic enemies of the Constitution. And as such, Congress must impeach them.
We must do our duty as citizens,we must force our representitives through Jeffersons manual,to honor thier oath to the country and us,thier true constituents. We cannot be complacent and be complicit by inaction! This is the travesty our"leaders"are guilty of!
I agree with Impeach for Peace .org ,that if we want to have a democracy we have to fight tooth and nail... and dollarRep for it.Visit this site to download forms and petitions to force your representitive to respond.Threaten him or her with impeachment, for violation of oath.
We must continue to call for impeachment. Who among the American people wants an attack on Iran, now that most of us want to be out of Iraq? Only that mad, dwindling group of crazies in the White House. Yet we read that the military is beefing up fuel supplies in the Gulf - for what?
On your head, Nancy Pelosi, if further conflagration happens. You could have prevented it; we asked you to. IMPEACH!
The impeachment process will go as far as is necessary to get re-elected, not one bit farther. So on the one hand it will do no good to call Congress and appeal to their duty, their oath, or their sense of justice. It WILL help if you can put them at fear of losing an election. I suggest that those who make contributions withhold them until their congress person actively supports impeachment.
The bastards are used to bribes and extortion.
Pardon my ignorance. I thought Conyers was pushing for impeachment too. What did he do wrong?
Willybilly,
Sadly, I agree with your words.
I have heard the argument that "we don't really know what the intent was of the Founding Fathers," or that the Constitution is "unclear" as to how to respond to the actions of a power-hungry president.
BULLSHIT.
Did Bush's pardoning of one of his staff (in order to protect himself) merit impeachment? Here is a quote from Federalist Paper #69 ( http://www.constitution.org/fed/federa69.htm ) positing a what-if scenario - how an overly empowered state governor could use pardons to protect his own conspiracy versus how a President SHOULD be prevented from doing so:
All conspiracies and plots against the government, which have not been matured into actual treason, MAY BE SCREENED FROM PUNISHMENT of every kind, by the interposition of the prerogative of PARDONING. If a governor of New York, therefore, should be at the head of any such conspiracy, until the design had been ripened into actual hostility he could insure his accomplices and adherents an entire impunity. A President of the Union, on the other hand, though he may EVEN PARDON TREASON, when prosecuted in the ordinary course of law, could shelter no offender, in any degree, from the effects of impeachment and conviction. Would not the prospect of a total indemnity for all the preliminary steps be a greater temptation to undertake and persevere in an enterprise against the public liberty...
Impeachment is the remedy - make that the ultimate safety valve - to unchecked executive power. The exact situation that W and Cheney have created was foreseen over two hundred years ago. That is why impeachment is written directly into the Constitution. A corrupt and/or power hungry President, destructive battles between political parties ("factions"), gradual suspension of liberties during time of war, excess influence by wealthy interests - all these scenarios and more were anticipated (see Federalist Papers #10, 48, 51, etc). For these reasons, our Founding Fathers also put in place the checks and balances as well as ultimate remedies to all the problems we now face.
But our Democrats lack the courage to do what is needed. I have gone past anger and depression for what has happened to our country. I am heartbroken.
if this administration is not impeach,
the constitution has been amended and no other president can be impeach in the future
militantliberal___You have it exactly right, the conditions for impeachment are that you have some viscous rabid maddog Repubs controlling Congress and a Dem president who fooled around a bit. Nothing else will work for impeachment to take place. Forget the Constitution, it has been nullified by these criminals in office, and is no longer relevant. There is plenty of immunity and pardons to go around anyway, so we can relax and forget about it.
I doubt that impeachment will even go forward at this stage of the game. Dems have made it clear that it's "off the table", no matter what anybody else says. No one's got the cojones to go forward with it, because we all remember the faux-impeachment of Clinton because he got it on with an intern. So, like, "whoop-de-freakin'-do!", no one died. So he was unfaithful to his wife. So what else is new? We all know that Kennedy wasn't exactly a saint when it came to matters of women. OK, maybe he was more discreet about it than Clinton, but still, many Presidents have had extra-marital affairs while in office and no one said word one about it.
We all know what was up with that ridiculous impeachment of Clinton - the Republicans had just taken over Congress for the first time in decades and were "feeling their oats" and decided to show some muscle and go on a witch hunt as the first plank in their planned "permanent Republican Majority" plan. Don't think Karl Rove had something to do with that? Think again - what's he been doing all along but playing dirty tricks, right? I sense that this was his first foray into subterfuge on a national level. His fingerprints are all over that one.
So, see, Dems know now that it pretty much became apparent what a joke the impeachment of Clinton was, but they also know how badly it cost the Republicans in the short term. Gingrich fell from power as did those around him, and politicos all ran scared as a result knowing that they could be next. Everyone waited for the other shoe to drop, and it did with the stolen election of 2000 that put Bush in power. And Bush is no Republican, either. He's some kind of weird radical extremist that has even *real* Republicans seeing red for his profligate spending and expansion of the government, which are as anti-conservative as you can get.
What this all boils down to is this: the use of impeachment as a corrective tool was forever ruined by the Clinton debacle. It's now seen by most politicos as a means of exercising some kind of vendetta against the opposition, a partisan witch hunt, if you will. You can blame Gingrich & Co. for their subversion of that as a real corrective tool to restore balance to the three branches of government: executive, legislative and judicial. At no time did Clinton overstep his powers and declare himself to be a unitary president like Bush has. At no time did Clinton ever practically declare himself above the law and an imperial ruler. Those are reasons for impeachment, but no one wants to admit that there are real Constitutional reasons for using it to correct the abuses of power that we are seeing now. Rather, people have grown gun-shy of it for fear of appearing too much like Gingrich & Co. and using it to consolidate power for one political party.
So, kiss any chances of impeachment goodbye. Not gonna happen, no matter how much so many of us want it. We can scream at our legislators until we're blue in the face, but they're Beltway insiders and not given to taking risky measures like impeaching the administration this late in the game. They're going to think of nothing else but their own re-election campaigns, and that, my friends, is the sad reality of it all. They don't want to risk losing their cushy seats in the Senate or Congress and all the perks that go along with it. They don't represent you and I. They represent the special interests, the corporations, Big Money, whoever can buy influence, and most of us don't have the bucks to buy it and grease a few palms along the way.
Look how long we've all called for impeachment. Think they're going to do it NOW, this close to the end of the BushCo reign? Nonsense. If they were going to do it at all, they'd've done so already. The list of crimes that this administration has committed is longer than my arm. And that's just in the first term! The second term crimes list is probably longer than my height. No, impeachment is something we can all dream about happening, but all of us here know darn well that there's no one with enough courage to give it the big push and make it happen sooner rather than later. The longer they wait, the less likely it's bound to happen. So....forget it. And count down the days on your calendars until 1/20/09 and hope that Kucinich wins the election, but I'm not counting on it. The MainStream Media has already made up its collective minds that it's going to be yet another Clinton, continuing the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton dynasty. And if Hillary somehow wins two terms, that will mean 28 years of rule by two families in the White House. That's just wrong.
Let's hope I'm wrong about all this, but I'm also a hardened realist who knows how things work. The People don't elect the President. The media and the Electoral College elect a President. That's no democracy. If we'd had real Democracy, Gore would have been inaugurated President in 2000 instead of the Supreme Court making the decision who won it, and that's illegal anyway, because it's not within their purview to decide such things. So we basically have an administration that was illegal from the get-go and has remained so ever since. But no one's willing to take corrective measures to restore our Constitution. Meaning, right now, we're not a true democracy. We're not a country of the people, by the people, for the people, and haven't been for some time now. It's all just so sad.
CMEDWARDS. You say MOST of the articles of impeachment are not things the Vice President is responsible for. Well, if he took the resposiblity upon himself, he's responsible.
BTW, Which of the charges do you feel he is NOT repnsible for, and which do you believe he IS, as you state __ MOST? ___If he has committed any of them, he should not be, __ he MUST be impeached, according to our law of the land, which is NOT negotiable without a vote of OUR congress. I will agree, the President is also in the same house. If one lives in a shit house, ___ they smell like shit.
Throw the whole administration out and let Al Gore take over for the remaining term .
I see Ms. Pelosi's statement about keeping impeachment off the table as prophetic:
Impeachment isn't tabled - it's before the Judiciary Committee.
Still, most of the author's suggested additions to the articles of impeachment are not things that the Vice President is legally responsible for. To add them as legitimate articles of impeachment, they would have to be laid at the President's doorstep.
We have come a long way from the intent of our founding fathers.
In drafting the amendment, America's Founding Fathers affirmed the fundamental right of citizens to be informed about all sides of an issue without governmental interference. Thomas Jefferson even went so far as to write: If it were left to me to decide whether we should have a government without a free press or a free press without a government, I would prefer the latter. Belief in the importance of a press free of governmental control has remained constant throughout American history.
The Bush-Chaney devastating unilateralism and arrogance, instead of coalition building and diplomacy, has resulted in the total loss of America's credibility worldwide. The reckless and unjust unilateral action based on deception has caused the death of more than a million Iraqis, four million refugees and has created millions of new enemies.
The death and the destruction in Afghanistan and Iraq, in turn have been an absolute boom for the extremist in their recruitment.
There are two reasons why impeachment is so important and necessary; first to erase and remove all remnant of usurpation and transfer of power from the judiciary and legislative branches to the executive. This should stop the possibility of the continued excesses of power by future administrations. The founding fathers designed impeachment to counter an out of control executive branch.
Secondly, Mr. Cheney, the brain behind the throne, who has systematically undermined our constitution, ignored our laws and seriously damaged our democracy, must be held accountable. His reckless lies, half truths and deception have taken us to an unjust and unnecessary war that has caused the death of 3866 Americans, drained our treasury and has brought our economy to the brink of bankruptcy.
Rather curious that Ms Pelosi would "take impeachment" off the table and limit her legislative powers. By doing so she has undermined the Constitution and allowed a rogue executive branch to continue menacing the world. It makes one wonder if she was bribed or blackmailed. Did she jump, or was she pushed?
Pelosy and the "Bush-enabling" Democratic Party:
Impeach this war criminal Bush and the war criminal Cheney!!
What are waiting for?
History may well brand you as complicit. (in my mind you already are)
IMPEACH
IMPEACH
There is not the least doubt as to the treason and crimes against the peace. It is the DUTY of congress to impeach without delay. Do our senators and representatives prefer to be unindicted co-conspirators?
It is time that we define those who use their power to kill and destroy as defective human beings. That means anyone who sees war, torture, environmental degradation, as viable strategies, is unfit to hold office. Are you listening Barack? Hilary? Rudy? Mitt? george? etc.

"...many important issues deserve the attention of Congress. But the Constitution is the foundation of our democracy, not just an issue."
Indeed, there was another shining moment courtesy of Dennis Kucinich, provided during the April 26 Democratic "debate" on MSNBC. When Brian Williams asked the field of candidates whether any of them support Kucinich's move to impeach Dick Cheney, no one raised so much as an eyebrow. In response, Dennis removed from his jacket a pocket copy of the U.S. Constitution and reaffirmed his oath of office to defend it, and to take Cheney to task for violating it.
That was the bowtie on what has become the giant cowpie of televised Democratic debates.
Call, write, pound on the doors (Pelosi's, Conyers and the rest of the Judiciary COmmittee)... Our will be done...
militant liberal, in the conditions, you left off giving the prez sex, we need another blue dress, a Monica, no one has volunteered to do that nasty deed... sex in the oval office, that is the only way to get them impeached... bush and cheney orgy ... that should do the tricky dick... sells newspapers...
Yea Dennis Kucinich! I write Conyers daily, and my congressman too! TEXREY
Magnificent piece, Ms. Boyd. You are a credit to our state of Washington and to our country. We need more patriots like you to speak out and take action. Bravo.
R.W. Behan
The key words are, "according to our Constitution". That is the document which Bush stated was just a G-damn piece of paper, then has gone about proving he is correct on at least one of his comments.
The key to the mandatory impeachment process is not Pelosi, regardless what she said about it. The key is Conyers. He is the one who is in violation of the supreme law of our land and NO ONE is challenging him with the available legal process.
or are newspapers gone now?
The newspapers are gone; there just haven't been any services yet.
big bad bob, you do not want a military coup. that is what pakistan has. what we all want is THE RULE OF LAW by invoking THE CONSTITUTION. let our representatives see what we think on this subject. we are in the majority, which should be the place for determining what happens in a democracy.
what i found astounding is the blanket over news coverage of kucinich's efforts on nov. 6. i had to work the polls that day, so when i came home late that night i went online looking for news of the day's activities. nothing anywhere but here.
while we're looking for the rule of law, we also need to look for the publication of information. or are newspapers gone now?
IMHO- The administration that is in power is part of a radical shift that intends TO demolish our system. All of the key players studied at Columbia under Strauss. A Machiavellian professor who believed in the philosopher king mentality. The unwashed masses are not fit to decide what our government says or does, in their opinions.
Starting under Reagan, the removal of social nets for the mentally ill, the poor, college grants for the underpriveledged, union power.
Facing us now is the destruction of the middle class. Removal of all market regulations, NAFTA, and the whispered rumors of the Amero, to me spell a modern twist on neo-serfdom for Canada, Mexico, and the US.
I think that many (perhaps not all) of our elected officials have been given glimpses into their new roles as our lords and nobles....and they like it.
After The Dark Ages, the Reniassance, and The Enlightenment eras ended the control of the monarchies and the church over our ancestors. The printing press allowed knowledge to become widespread and we crawled out from under their control. The dumbing down of our populations has made a comeback though. All of our movement toward a more learned and earth friendly populace is being removed and regressed.
TPTB would like a return, and hence the design for a NWO.
If we do not put a stop to this madness, I think we will become corporatized serfs for the multinationals, and whatever puppet government that will follow will be their middle management.
History is repeating itself on many levels. I am personally tired of endless negative historical feedback loops.
Since I do not want serfdom, I am thinking perhaps we need a neo-modern form of Robin of Locksley. Or maybe, a bunch of Peter Pans, whatever your choice is...pick a hero of fiction and run with it.
We've allowed them to write the story up until this point, and I don't know about you all, but I am not liking the way this particular one ends...it's time to shift the paradigm.
Impeachment is always on the table, according to our constitution. Pelosi, my Congresswoman, mystified me by taking it off the table. If not now, when? It seems to me something else is going on... something similar to J Edgar Hoover blackmailing people.
President Bush and his Vice Dick Cheney did everything in their means what Americans always wanted (from invading a foreign country for oil to changing tax-laws to make Americans richer).
Democrats and Republicans are united when it comes to occupy a foreign land for oil.
In reality, Democrats will never impeach President Bush or his Vice.
Democrats and Republicans are basically same and similar people.
When Pelosi said: " IMPEACHMENT IS OFF THE TABLE " she sold out the American people and the Constitution,so if Bush and Cheney go we get her? SUPPORT DENNIS THE MENACE.
If impeachment does not happen at this time with this VP and pres, then our democracy is diminished, perhaps in the past tense.
Without impeachment the message to future presidents that they should never abuse the people and the constitution goes undelivered.
And our democracy goes away.
I have gone to the websites above am writing to ask them to throw their support behind D.K. I hope you will all do the same.
If not now, when? Under ALL of the following conditions:
1. The president cheats on his/her spouse;
2. The president is not a Republican
3. Congress is under Republican control
That's it. Nothing to see here. Obey the Leader and go back to sleep.
