Protester Waves Blood-Colored Hands in Rice's Face
WASHINGTON -- An anti-war protester waved blood-colored hands in U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's face at a congressional hearing on Wednesday and shouted "war criminal!", but was pushed away and detained by police."The blood of millions of Iraqis is on your hands!" yelled the protester, Desiree Anita Ali-Fairooz of the Code Pink organization which often disrupts hearings on Capitol Hill with protests against the Iraq war.
Rice, an architect of President George W. Bush's Iraq policy, appeared unfazed by the incident, which occurred when she entered a House of Representatives meeting room to testify at a hearing on U.S. Middle East policy.
"Out!," shouted the chairman of the Foreign Relations committee, Rep. Tom Lantos, as plain-clothes security men and police hustled the woman away. The California Democrat also ordered the removal of several other Code Pink activists.
Capitol Police said later five people were arrested, including Ali-Fairooz, who was charged with disorderly conduct and assault on a police officer.
She was also charged with defacing government property for smearing the red paint from her hands on the hallway wall outside the hearing room. The other four protesters faced disorderly conduct charges.

I have no probelem with their "lunacy" - but wher are the male "lunatics"?, where are the young "lunatics". Wher are the "lunatics" mobbing the comittee rooms and congressional gallery every day?
Miles P.,
This is the United States. All press is good press.
Look, I support Code Pink and their tactics, but maybe they could try a little harder not to look like lunatics.
Simonhhh ... being sarcastic. There's not an ounce of sympathy in me for this person, except to say it must be awful to be in her skin ... to know that you are the cause of so much suffering and death.
We need Code Pink more than ever, considering the absence of an opposition party.
Sally Jackson -- YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. 'The lunatics are in the house.'
'I have no probelem with their "lunacy" - but wher are the male "lunatics"?, where are the young "lunatics". Wher are the "lunatics" mobbing the comittee rooms and congressional gallery every day?'
It's tough to fight the good fight when literally one unexcused missed day of work is all it would take for me to be homeless.
They've got us all under their thumb. The reason there hasn't been more visible opposition to this war is that very few of us can afford the luxury of getting arrested.
jdpst44... All press isn't good press, if you need a primer, we, the common people who seek justice, do not own the media and although I think there is a place for a stunt like this, to base your strategy on it is faulty and it is being effectively used against the cause.
Code Pink's stances are honorable but grandstanding in costumes and dancing at a rally in front of mothers who have lost family members in the war isn't the best way to go about it.
A humbled focus and organization amongst different groups is what we need and that includes taking constructive criticism and guidance on the anti-war front from people versed in collective strategy.
Code Pink's bravery is commendable but one must admit that there are thousands of people ready to get active that get turned off by the self-indulgent tactics used by the organization.
I think it would further the cause if you took to heart some constructive criticism that comes up and evaluate your tactics and figure out a way to streamline them in unison with a broader movement.
This shouldn't be about code pink's branding identity... it should be an effort to come in contact with people who are against the war in unison... which means compromise.
Condi doesn't look 'unfazed' to me. She looks furious. Poor thing.
Too bad the woman didn't get to smear that fake blood onto Rice's designer suit, or better, on her $1000 pair of pumps.
Condoleeza is a failure on all counts; a woman, a black, a politician and a human.
Meg..."Poor thing." saywhat?
I think you were trying to be sarcastic...
This Condi Rice war criminal 'bitch' deserves far more than bloody hands waved about..How about jail for the natural term of her life!
PS Those code pink ladies are absolutely brilliant...One genuine lady 'demonizing' miss 'surly' rice [small caps intended]
Code Pink volunteers and other groups who are attempting to keep the DC establishment accountable are the real heros and should be getting the medals and awards.
If there is any semblance of a democracy left in the US ten years from now, we will have these groups to thank, not the troops or the press corps.
btw, here's a link to the video...

We see again, as we see with Sen. Feinstein's support of Judge Southwick -- whose racism was not enough, in her mind, to disqualify him from being on the federal bench -- that the Vichycrats are a support party for Bush, not an opposition party.
"but maybe they could try a little harder not to look like lunatics."
I'd rather look like a lunatic, than be one.
Hey Meg October 24th, 2007 3:57 pm....
Yup...I totally agree...
Yea Code Pink!!!!!!!!!! More more more....we can make a diference. Thank you Desiree.
The behavior of the storm troopers is far more repugnant. This is an outburst at the dinner table, a little unpleasant but no need for overbearing security to escort another American from the Democratic process. Symbolically, more Americans are completely excluded, without the assistance of a badge wearing thug with a truncheon. Blood is being spilled and it's all over Condi's hands; poignant protest.
Condi Lice needs more fiber.
bleve,
CodePink is not the only group that I know of but they get alot media time and I think their message is very effective. For a lack of better terms, they "shock and awe" the Congress and bush administration.
You are right though that all the groups should work together. That's what the Conservatives have done for the past thirty years and it has worked. Read Don't think of an elephant by Lakoff.
If it wasn't for groups like Code Pink, no one would ever be able to tell that there IS an opposition of the Bush Lunacy with the way the right wing media/propoganda machine operates.
GIVE ME MORE OF THAT CODE PINK STYLE "LUNACY" and you can keep all your spineless sellout Nancy Pelosi style "sanity"
None of this hatred will help. A copy of the photo everywhere will help. Nobody seems to be selling yet -- typical capitalist reticence to not make a buck I suppose. Wonderful. Thank you Code Pink. By the way, our local group is "ladies in black." Nice to see them merge
Condoleeezzza Rice wants to be white so bad, she wouldn't dare be seen with her hair not straightened. What's with the red rouge on her cheeks? Another ridiculous attempt to be white. How pathetic.
And what's with the "Democratic" jerk who got hysterical and wanted the demonstrators out --Democratic Tom Lantos, a California Representative. I'll never vote for a Democrat again. They protect at all costs Bush, Rice, and anyone and everyone of the criminal Bush-Cheney Crime Syndicate.
It would be nice if, even for an instant, this sort of thing made Rice stop and consider that if moral people retake this country, she will spend the rest of her life in prison after worldwide exposure and judgment in a war criminals tribunal.
bleve,
Codepink's tactics have to affect members of Congress.
Not so nice goner. I don't see them walking aooperatively to the slammer. Better to keep them busy ducking participatory democracy than giving them time to think about what's coming to them. Remember: these are bad people, not mistaken people. Mistaken people got them elected. Now they vent their anger at being lied to. But don't pray for them to figure out what they've got coming. Am I being censored again? I don't cuss.
It's not rouge... it's blood of the thousands she helped send to their deaths...
Code Pink - thanks!
This looks like a peaceful protest to me. Putting hands up and showing red painted palms doesn't come close to what Rice should have in front of her! I say "Hooray," for the courageous women of Code Pink. We should do all we can to support their effort$$$$$!
Someday (I hope) Rice will wish she could still see those hands and not have to face what the World Tribunal has for her to see.
jdpst44... "they "shock and awe" the Congress and bush administration"
Well, not exactly. The people in congress are educated and know that innocent people are dying but they are paid good and like their perks and are spineless. So the tactic might shock them but there is no real effect in their policy, there is no "awe".
Once again, I think there is a place for a tactic like this but I don't think that this group constantly using it is working to the benefit of our side and its isolating the movement more than inviting in the average outraged citizen.
I'm not bashing them but I think they're being short sighted and are obviously very adverse to listening to fellow activists that don't agree with all their tactics.
Rare indeed is a leader or a group that can truly evaluate their operation and ask the tough questions. I don't think its out of line to ask these questions. We should all be asking if we're being as effective as we could be and asking that of other groups too... and not get completely offended in the process.
LET ME ASK YOU ALL SOMETHING? How do you propose getting our constitution and nation back from the imperial monsters that are destroying everything we stand for?
1- burn the media consolidators in Hollywood with arson?
2- protest to a bunch of ruling thugs who have no clue how to get us to a sustainable retreat and bring back humanity towards national patterns?
3- vandelize SUV dealerships
4-kidnap imperial family members and torture them
5- all of the above?
awesome photo and a very well-planned protest. it's always interesting that a photo like this, a protest like this, it can get picked up by reuters, but not a single MSM paper in the country ran this story. and NO TV coverage. this is the sort of story that only common dreamers readers are going to see. correct me if i'm wrong.
Code Pink should be nominated for next year's Nobel Peace Prize. Their heart, spirit, creativity, courage and tenacity continue to lift us up and keep us going.
Thank you, Ms. Ali-Fairooz, and the others who were arrested for actions taken on behalf of peace.
Look for my pink cap Sat., Oct. 27 in Seattle :)
In solidarity.
P. S. Shame on Rep. Lantos (who looked so splendid on the dais with the Dalai Lama the other day). He SHOULD have been saying "Out!" to Condoleezza Rice, not Ms. Ali-Fairooz.
I Love it! I bet she didn't feel much like shopping for shoes after that!!!
These people need it -- literally --- in their faces!
Valsmith, I don't understand why anyone would stand up for a war criminal like Condi Rice. I think she's a self-hating black, and I have the right to think so. This isn't a fascist right-wing message board, by the way.
I still think the red rouge looks ridiculous. I wonder why she never got married and had children. Most women like children enough to do that. She seems like a cold, calculating person. Look at her picture. LOL
I think Code Pink is great. :) They have more courage than a lot of men.
Maybe the "mothers who have lost family members in the" Illegal, Immoral Occupation Should be Front & Center With Code Pink!
I love it!! Go Code Pink! I wish the Code Pink in my area would do more local protesting (Albany, NY). We can't always trek down to Washington D.C.
I bet Condi didn't feel much like shopping for shoes after that!
Demonizing and vowing to punish our corrupt leaders is not the way to peace. Threatening the politicians, backed by too many Americans, who helped Bush stay entrenched in office after 2004, will merely keep the country divided and prevent progress. We should resist the easy temptation to scapegoat and put all of the blame on the few along with all the people who ignorantly went along with them. It will only strengthen their resolve to stay their course and persevere in their mindset, because now they will be frightened into desperately striving to prove they are "right," to "win." Working and persevering to correct our course by peaceful leadership is the way. The neocons and their followers need to be shown by example that their ideology is fear-based and therefore a failure. Yes there should be impeachment to start the investigation of how our country veered this way. It is the government and US who should be impeached. The peacekeepers were ineffective in preventing this war and not enough spoke out in time. We might therefore be seen as enablers. It is the entire country that must atone. Dennis Kucinich is the only candidate for 2008 who could lead us out of the mess we are in.
Too bad the bloody hands couldn't have belonged to one of the many wounded who have come back scarred forever.
I can't fathom women such as Rice and Albright supporting a war. Hillary is included, since she and her husband attacked Kosovo. And we know how that turned out.
I thought men weren't allowed in code pink.
Where do we get 1000 large fat-head size posters of the bloodstained hands in her face?.
Did you hear all the polite greetings when they were dragging people who did nothing out. How nice and polite and all.
"I think Code Pink is great. :) They have more courage than a lot of men."
Sounds like your causes are getting crossed. I may or may not agree with you on that one but a bitter statement and bitter sentiment to your fellow activists leaves much to be desired.
"I love it!! Go Code Pink! I wish the Code Pink in my area would do more local protesting (Albany, NY)."
It took me about 30 seconds to find numerous ways of getting active in Albany... here's an idea... organize one.
"Maybe the "mothers who have lost family members in the" Illegal, Immoral Occupation Should be Front & Center With Code Pink!"
Perhaps they don't feel like reveling in a carnival atmosphere. I mean really, does one not see how a mourning person who is ready to get active could be a bit offended by a bunch of well off middle-aged women who have the resources to travel at leisure and who may not even know someone who has lost their life in the war. Take some time to understand that we need as many people as we can get...especially those who have been directly effected. If we can get over the self-indulgence and patting oneself on the back for taking a stand, we may be able to come together and do this in a more efficient and effective way.
"Look for my pink cap Sat., Oct. 27 in Seattle :)
In solidarity."
Is the peace/antiwar movement in America in "solidarity"?

"I don't understand why anyone would stand up for a war criminal like Condi Rice. I think she's a self-hating black, and I have the right to think so. This isn't a fascist right-wing message board, by the way."
You're right. Bad people deserve whatever happens to them. And whoever disagrees with you should be vaguely demonized an islamofascist, a Godless communist, or a fascist right-winger. Two lessons well learned from George Bush.
You do indeed have a right to say so. I'll defend your right to do so, while exercising mine to disagree.
"It took me about 30 seconds to find numerous ways of getting active in Albany… here's an idea… organize one."
There is an Albany, NY chapter - I am on there mailing list and never receive anything. Hillary's office is here -- lots to do there, but I guess her office in DC is more appealing.
I do not know if Condie is entirely unfazed. She looks a little perturbed in the picture. I wonder what option she will choose to blow off a little steam? A.) Go to the gymnasium B.) Let Blackwater renegades randomly shoot another 100 Iraqi civilians C.) Go shopping for shoes
I will put my money on choice B.
Code Pink Rocks!
The photo of Code Pink activist Desiree Anita Ali-Fairooz with "blood" on her hands framing Condelezza Rice's head is iconic. You'll see it again, and again, and again in days, weeks, months, and years to come. And that's no accident. These Code Pink women know what they are doing, and they are darn good at it, thank goodness.
Would that there were many, many more with their courage, integrity, gumption, and political savvy. But I understand their numbers are growing.
They are the guilty consciences of the 535 members of the U.S. Congress, and they will not be silenced.
You Go, Girl!
The whole of Congress at this time are war criminals. Except for those who voted against it. I let my congressman know that in an e-mail I sent him.
There is just no other way to spin attacking a defenseless country that had done you no harm. The crime has been committed and can't be undone.
Code Pink is showing more courage than I have. They are the best patriots this country has.
backydbq,
""but maybe they could try a little harder not to look like lunatics."
I'd rather look like a lunatic, than be one"
The concern with appearing "reasonable" baffles me. Look at Nancy Capitulatosi -- so professional appearing, and inside, dust and air.
The lunatics are the ones in the blue suits & lapel pins & tailored ensembles.
valsmith, thank you for calling out people for their patriarchal and racist language. I think we really need to reevaluate how we critique politicians. Let's focus on the impact of the policies Condoleezza promotes instead of relying on sexist slurs and degrading Condoleezza's physical appearance. You do not hear people talking about male-identified politicians in this way.
On a related note, I strongly recommend that people check out this piece by Kenyon Farrow about Ms. Rice from the book "Letters from Young Activists": http://towardfreedom.com/home/content/view/722/79/
Looks like there's a couple of right-wing fascists who are infiltrating the CD board. All I can say is if you don't like the comments about your hero Rice, you can always go to a right-wing message board. You'd probably be happier there.
I didn't mean to sound harsh with the guys. Should we have Code Blue protesters to join the Code Pink? I guess I hurt someone's feelings when I said Code Pink had more courage than a lot of men. :(
Lillulu
You caught me! I'm actually a agent of the CIA trained by the Gestapo in my beloved vaterland. I went to Langly after der fuhrer was murdered by the russians. I am here to spy upon YOU, specifically.
Perhaps I was too subtle for you earlier. You're assuming since you're attacking Rice, you have not only a constitutional right but a social carte blanche to say whatever you like. Any anyone who disagrees with you, even to say "I don't like her either, but you're carrying this a bit far" you label as a fascist. That is poor debating procedure, and even worse reasoning.
And tnewman, thanks.
