LEESBURG, Virginia - Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday described Tehran as an obstacle to Middle East peace and warned of "serious consequences" if it did not comply with the West's demands to halt sensitive nuclear work.
Cheney's comments underscored a ratcheting up of U.S. rhetoric toward Iran and came just days after President George W. Bush warned that a nuclear-armed Iran could lead to World War Three.
"The Iranian regime needs to know that if it stays on its present course, the international community is prepared to impose serious consequences," Cheney told a conference of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy. "The United States joins other nations in sending a clear message: We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."
Cheney discussed Iran in a speech in which he emphasized the importance of continued U.S. engagement in the Middle East and said the United States seeks stability there but not the kind that just keeps a lid on problems.
Speaking as the United States tries to lay the groundwork for a conference on Middle East peace expected to take place in Annapolis, Maryland, later this year, Cheney spoke in only broad terms about the goals of that gathering.
Cheney said the conference would aim to "provide diplomatic support" to parties seeking a deal on Palestinian statehood and review progress on building Palestinian institutions.
On Iran, he repeated Washington's criticism that it was interfering in Iraq, in addition to citing concern on its nuclear program.
He said that progress toward a more stable and peaceful Middle East would depend on responsible conduct by countries in the region, such as respect for neighbors' sovereignty and compliance with international agreements.
"If you apply all these measures it becomes immediately clear that the government of Iran falls far short and is a growing obstacle to peace in the Middle East," Cheney said.
CRITICISM OF SYRIA
Bush, who has insisted he wants a diplomatic solution to the Iranian issue, is pushing for a third round of U.N. sanctions against Iran.
But he faces resistance from Russia, a veto-holding member of the U.N. Security Council which backed two sets of limited U.N. sanctions against Iran but has been cool to the idea of any tough new measures.
Bush, at a news conference last week, said a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a "dangerous threat to world peace."
"We've got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel," he said. "So I've told people that, if you're interested in avoiding World War Three, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon."
Iran rejects accusations it is seeking to develop a nuclear bomb, saying it wants nuclear technology for peaceful civilian purposes such as power generation, and has refused to heed U.N. Security Council demands to halt sensitive uranium enrichment.
Cheney also had some criticism for Syria, accusing it of interfering in Lebanon's attempts to elect a new president.
"Through bribery and intimidation, Syria and its agents are attempting to prevent the democratic majority in Lebanon from electing a truly independent president," Cheney said.
Analysts who attended the think-tank forum where Cheney spoke were struck by his tough line toward Iran, especially in light of Bush's recent comments.
"The language on Iran is quite significant," said Dennis Ross, a peace mediator under former Presidents George Bush and Bill Clinton. "That's very strong words and it does have implications," referring to Cheney's warnings of serious consequences for Iran.

Show AllUnlike most who post comments here, I strongly believe the US should invade Iran, but only under the following conditions:
A) The invading force consists of the following individuals and no one else:
G. W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Condoleeza Rice, Joe Lieberman, Scooter Libby, David Addington, Alberto Gonzales, Karl Rove, Tom DeLay, Rudy Giuliani, Hillary Clinton, William Kristol, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Joe Scarborough, Michael Medved, Ann Coulter, and Michelle Malkin.
B) Each member of the invading force is to receive one M-16 with the barrel filled in with lead, and one uniform, with a circular red target on the front and the back.
C) The invading force is to be parachuted into a large gathering of the al Quds force at 12 noon, with large symbols written in Farsi on the parachutes that translate to "Death to Iran!"
Let the invasion begin!
The only legitimate form of leadership expresses itself by generosity (the obligation of providing a potlatch), and in leading by example.
Since the US has the largest stockpile of nuclear (and probably biological/chemical), exotic, etc. weaponry in the world -- as well as being the largest arms exporter -- we're hardly in a position to lead by example here.
The form of leadership which demands behavior totally contrary to its own is known as tyranny at worst, hypocrisy at best, bullying somewhere in the middle.
Someone should yank the pacemaker out of this dick.
I'd say Darth Vaders's at it again, except that Darth Vader is far more attractive and human. Cheney's a one-man horror show.
Impeachment isn't in anyone's-'interest'...(the investigation involved in such would bring-down ANY government...too many covert-actions since WW-II for the US to allow any public-'airing').
That said, the purpose behind Iraq wasn't to 'steal' or even corner "cheap oil sales" -- it was to insure-against any 'cheap-oil' (which would enable India/China/Africa/etc. to afford 'development' and come to output-Carbon on a scale approaching the Western-world). It _is_ in OilCo's interests to control and jack-up world-pricing for Oil by means of these 'militarily-triggered' chaotic-circumstances...and 150.-per-barrel is likely a desired-pricepoint. But, what drives US-planning is primarily extinction-level climactic-change (requiring the US to 'conserve') and the loss of its achieved-Dominance since the 1940's.
I believe Iran serves a purpose left-contained/unmolested for now -- and that all the fervor lately is smokescreen for different 'low-hanging fruit' (being Syria/S.Lebanon and/or Northern-or-Southern incursions into the Caspian Basin area). I hope-so, anyway -- the Sino/Russian-interests in Iran aren't necessarily 'vital' to them, but it could evolve as a direct-confrontation with either China or Russia if Iran was 'attacked' by the US/Israel.
If/when Iran is 'next', the goal will be to keep prices-up and/or oil-in-ground, with no change in Reserve-currency -- no invasion will happen (beyond encouraging internal regime-change/strife -- as unobtainable a goal as I can imagine). But, I still think Iran will be left-whole past 2008 -- as Rationale for all-else intended in its sphere -- and until the Basin-area is 'secure' (or made permanently 'insecure')...
Those of the planet who wish for peace will never have it as long as the likes of Cheney are alive. The fate his buddy Saddam met would be a fit end.
Does the fact that Iranians rally around their country and or religion when attacked make them fanatical, or patriotic? Saila states they are willing to fight to the death. If we attack them, like we did Iraq, resistance would be a noble cause to undertake.
Iran has not invaded anyone for over 100 years, the USA, no less than 25 countries. Really now, which is the peace loving nation?
Our leaders are murderers, and we, the citizens, allow them, year after year, with our tax dollars, to carry on as they like.
The Bush-Cheney Crime Syndicate and the rest of the neocon Zionists keep harping on about Iran "killing American soldiers." The real truth is that the American politicians are the ones who are getting American soldiers killed in Iraq. They are the ones that sent the soldiers on the war-profiteering mission based on lies, pretending it was because of "faulty intelligence."
Mike Gravel's prediction:
War with Iran triggers oil prices to go $150+ per barrel and a worldwide recession. MINIMUM.
Dennis Kucinich's solution:
Impeach NOW for a chance at democracy, stability, and peace. Stir the Congress out of dazed fear and hesitation. Hold them accountable or let them continue to run amuck.
I hate to be a G.I. fighting the Iranians. They’ve got 3 military forces: the regular military, the Revolutionary Guards military, and last but not least, the Basij or the volunteer army, which is about 100 thousand strong and is the scariest. This bunch really believes in God and life after death. They think whether they kill their enemy or are killed by it, they would go to paradise, although it is safe to assume that they would much rather kill me to go there than be killed. In other words, they would look at me as their key to paradise, and I hate that.
The worst part of all this is that, in spite of everything that has happened, the media is still taking these people seriously. They repeat lie after lie afte lie about Iran and very few actually stop to ask any questions at all. The amount of caution this time around is barely a step above Iraq. This is a very telling of the media's roll in US imperialism.
"Journalists" often fancy themselves as adversarial toward government. They just don't get that it's the important issues like war, economics, etc. and not the private lives of politicians that they're supposed be antangonistic on. This should demonstrate that the media are not only lazy and take official word as truth, but that they're all in the game together; ideologically attached at the head.
Show us the PROOF. Show us pictures, videos, anything that proves that Iran has nuclear weapons. Prove it. Put your money where your mouth is (no pun intended.) This bunch doesn't have much time left to totally destroy the world as we know it. They are hell bent on destruction and no one is stopping them. How sad. I am surprized that a coalition of countries around the world haven't gotten together and promoted a regime change in the US. We could sure use one.
I think it may be time to order the movie "Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb" and watch it again.
What can i say that i haven't already opined. we will attack Iran before the 2008 election, which Bush will place the country on curfew and remain president, as FDR did in WWII and call in the military to put down any mobs of protesters by murder if need be. I just hope Russia and China will back Iran and defend their sovereignty if the US decides to invade or bomb that country. It is in Russia's and China's own national security and interest to use all their military might and their 300 million man army. Let's see if big and bad america can beat a country that can fight back. If this happens, let's hope the american people will "see the light" and round them up, then execute the warmongers, like the people did in the communist countries against their dictators. Bush is right for a change: WWIII is soon on its way. Start building your bunkers 200 ft. below the top soil. No guarantee that you will come out alive-But to what? Bush and Cheney?
Tetti_Tatti,
I second that!
Jstevens..Evil does not need a reason. It comes from a place that lacks reason, truth, ethics or morality...it's just evil for the sake of evil. This is a difficult concept for people of conscience to accept. Evil truly exists and this country and world are now under its perceived power. Like 9/11, it's a well conceived illusion to subjugate the populace.
Democrats are to blame. Cheney gets more genocidal each time because he's fully aware that Democrats won't stop his crimes.
In fact Democrats are benefiting from his crimes, financially and politically.
VOTE SHEEHAN. VOTE INDEPENDENT.
Why an anthropogenic God? Isn't it possible that a creative force can't foretell the future or even determine what is moral behavior. The hyena kills the baby antelope and we kill each other, but why should a God care unless we think or say he cares to suit our purposes? What we really know about God comes from studying nature, not from verbal or written superstition.
Morality or it's lack of it seems to be a social adjustment religious manipulators make for us, not God. If we need morality as a social control, there could not be a worse example of moral leadership than Cheney. If our species is to survive, we need applied scientific knowledge of how our societies work in relation to our environment. It's too important to be left up to theocrats and greedy pigs.
Mr. d....I believe you mean can we get Dick out of bush's ass. The problem is they both like it too much!
Yea ezeflyer, so many wars goin on I lose count..... God, End times cancelling the elections???
How Evil can God let Satan get?
That's WWIII and cancel the election.
Since we here are all falling for the Parasites scaring us into thinkin' they are gonna start nuclear war by bombing iran.... "What ever will be will be, the future's not ours to see"... but I see a way out of this fear game because this War talk is all they have left.
What else is a War Criminal who has been caught but is hiding behind the troops for the rest of his office goin to say...the truth?
The truth is and the world knows that Iran does not want the bomb and all the trouble it is causing the USA.
We are back to MAD now ...Mutually Assured Destruction is back on the table, (have you noticed yet?) because Russia and China have signaled that a bombing war with Iran would be bombing Russian and Chinese assets which would mean a real big big War three and four all together now.
I am glad that MAD is back and it's about time! It is the only incentive for peace that the War Machine Profiteers have.... it is the only restraint on their Racket.
The more you let the Parasites get under your skin, they beat you up because the fear you are showing now is why folks were building bomb shelters and why they made us hide under our Desks for bomb drills at school. Bush and Cheney love it when they Shock you because they are Sadistic War Criminals..... and it is good for the business of the super wealthy... get it yet?
The World knows all of the lies of these guys and are just waiting them out now just like you and me.
But the Parasites know they are caught and all they have left is to scare us as much as they can get away with. But the threats are just empty because when they say they will never let Iran build a bomb the world knows that they don't want a bomb, they want the prestige of having Nuclear Power and every country in the world now except maybe Israel wants a new way from under the thumb of this falling empire that is already bankrupted by its own Wars.
Now when Bush starts telling the UN inspectors to leave Iran, I will change my mind and join you in believing the End Times are here.
Love Ya, Jim
BugsBBunny:
I am interested in your analysis of why we went to Iraq. It is so often accepted (and reiterated by Alan Greenspan) that Iraq was an oil grab. That never made sense to me. We won't be getting much oil, if any, from Iraq and certainly the cost of the war will far exceed any benefit.
Bush is not so hard to figure out. He's extremely stupid and delusional--anything goes with this combination. I can't figure out Cheney's motivation.
I am disgusted that the President stated that the Iranian leader vowed to destroy Israel. He has been widely misquoted on that one. Ahmadinejad came to speak at Columbia University for the explicit purpose of (in my opinion) avoiding war with the US. He was insulted, called ignorant, and pushed into answering questions re: human rights issues as if the US has any moral high ground from which to speak. He was clearly kept from the topic at hand and was mocked because he would not reduce the complex relationship between Israel and the Muslim world to a simple one word answer. I am not a big fan of the Iranian leader, but he was clearly trying to avoid war. He was polite and reasonable, and spoke of the principles of democracy, which was in sharp contrast to the tone taken by the US host.
Cheney wants war with Iran very badly. But why?
It seems impossible to prevent the spread of nuclear capability by this point. Perhaps a better strategy would be to not become the enemy of every country that is working on one.
I often wonder how Sandra Day O'Connor feels right now. For so many years, she was the swing vote on the Supreme Court. She was the swing vote in the 'election' that placed Mr. Cheney in his present office.
How must she be feeling? Maybe she couldn't have prevented this turn of events, but her vote certainly enabled it. Why, Sandra? What have you to say now?
Don't miss this great documentary:
The War On Democracy

The War on Democracy, John Pilger's first film for cinema
"We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."
Who is this "We" Cheney is referring to? A collection of chickenhawks--Wolfowitz, Perle, Feith, Kristol, Gafney, etc.--who will launch their own invasion? Or will they just raise funds privately and pay Blackwater to do it?
The White House’s propaganda campaign laying the groundwork for military action against Iran dates back almost six years—to Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address in which he designated Iran as a founding member of the “axis of evil.†Since then, this drumbeat has waxed and waned as other concerns—primarily the disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq—have often commanded center stage. Now, with the Bush administration approaching its final year in office, a renewed push and a shorter fuse are increasingly evident. My 3-minute YouTube video entitled “Forewarned Is Forearmed: Bush On Iran†is available HERE. It offers a very brief but deeply troubling chronicle of the president’s public warmongering and demonization of Iran. As has been said before, “the hour is getting late.â€
Today I heard Chaney on TV saying something about a nation that is throwing its weight around the Middle East and I thought he was talking about the USA until I heard him say "Iran".
Everything he was saying about Iran seemed to apply to the U.S. but much more so.
Cindy Sheehan recently quoted the Bible about this type of thing. It's at Matthew Chapter 7 verses 4-5:
"How dare you say to your brother, 'Please, let me take that speck out of your eye,' when you have a log in your own eye? You hypocrit! First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will be able to see clearly to take the speck out of your brother's eye." (Good News Bible)
.
Elsewhere on CD someone was of the opinion that Bush/Cheney will be tried as war criminals in an international court. Very wishful thinking. It just is not going to happen when the US is such an economic and military powerhouse. We really need to be brought down to a reasonble size. Also, why do our leaders insist we must be #1 in the world? Why must we be?
I wonder if others share my feelings, as an American, desires that bad things happen to the country. It seems to me that the only way to de-militarize this country would be for an extreme economic catastrophe to take place. That way it would be impossible for us to pay for our military complex, and those defence corporations could go bankrupt. How else would it happen? We deserve this to happen.
Yes, our leaders are sick. But what about the voters. Is still boggles my mind that Bush/Cheney could get re-elected in 2004. They probably could do it again for 2008, if they could run. Maybe the election was stolen. But I also know that many people voted for them for real, so that is not really a valid excuse.
"There is a god and it is a damned good one too. He is currently punishing the American people for having REelected this administration."
The American people are being punished??? How would you like to live in Iraq?
The American people are shopping.

Here we go again! More Weapons of Mass Destruction, more white vans driving in circles in the middle of the desert(so-called germ warfare mobile labs-remember that?)more lunacy from the lunatics in the White House!
Here we go again! Their contempt for the US citizen is so prevalent, they'll probably use the same speeches and the same footage they used to convince everyone to support their insane war against Iraq! It'll be cheaper that way, too!
Heard a strange rumor that the reason the democrats aren't impeaching is because-if they try that-bush will declare a state of emergency, cancel the elections and remain in power. Anybody hear anything like that?
Can Dick be shoved up Bush's ass?
A nuclear armed United States of Israel is going to start world war III, because Cheney and his demons cannot compromise with anyone, and believes the world would be better off without a few billion people. Therefore the rest of the world has to go, starting with Iran. There will be no winners, if any one survives. Russia is gearing up for a big conflict, with a new nuclear weapons program, and increased militarization, and new sorts of missiles. China is also building up its armed capacity. The middle eastern states are the oil meat in the middle. The oil everyone wants without having to pay a fair price. Israel itself has enough nuclear weapons to finish off everyone. The US is posting missile bases here there and everywhere. After the first set of nuclear missile exchanges, it might be over for everyone, although some bunkered silos may survive long enough to give a merciful quick finish to the rest of the earth. The best prevention would be a strike team to take out Cheney.
Erratum:
When 'Lon' Cheney said, "The United States joins other nations in sending a clear message: We will not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon."
- what he *actually* meant was, "We will not allow Iran (or anyone else) to have things WE INTEND TO STEAL."
~ Apologies to the Foxed hoi polloi for any misunderstandings here.

Regarding the point above, posted by ddell413:
Yes, I have often thought that blaming 'God' (-or Christ, Buddha, Mohammed etc) for the present ills *WE* little nitwits have created in this world, is a bit like blaming the inventor of the wheel for one's latest automobile accident!
To paraphrase the old song: "It ain't what you have, it's the way that you use it!"
Stop blaming God for evil men such as Cheney. Blame Satan and his hedonistic followers who wander the world causing death and destruction.
Bush and Cheney will pay for this in the afterlife, make no mistake.
Phobos: "There is a god and it is a damned good one too. He is currently punishing the American people for having REelected this administration."
I agree that there is a God, but not that the American people re-elected this administration. I actually reject the idea that the 2000 election was Gore's--but I do believe that the 2004 election was Kerry's. I believe that Bush lost by a narrow margin, but this was "corrected" via Diebold machine tampering.
As long as we have these machines in polling places, we will not be holding honest, legal elections.
"He said that progress toward a more stable and peaceful Middle East would depend on responsible conduct by countries in the region, such as respect for neighbors’ sovereignty and compliance with international agreements."
That needs to accompany the above-photo of Cheney next to any Dictionary-definition of "Hypocrite"...
And Bush's: "We’ve got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel...So I’ve told people that, if you’re interested in avoiding World War Three..." next to "Inveigle" and/or "Transference".
Just 'Unbelievable'.
Ahmadinejad -- quoting Khomeini, and co-opining that "the regime currently in Jerusalem will vanish someday from the pages of time" -- is NOT an announcement "...he wants to destroy..." any-Country (or People). This is the most ludicrous, oft-repeated, and Propagandist-mistranslation in modern-History. Especially-so, when considering the lack of success Israel has always-found while trying to bribe (with up-to $60,000.-per-head offered -- such offers being donated US-funding or captured Palestinian-revenues/land, btw) the many tens-of--thousands of Iranian-Jews, peacefully/contentedly living in Iran, to immigrate to Israel. Wouldn't they, actually living-there while openly practicing their-Faith, be in a better-yet position to judge Iran's real-intents towards Jews than, say, Bush (or the MSM, or Bollinger)?
And how, exactly, would a figurehead and near-powerless Iranian-President [or, a dead-Ayatollah] go about 'destroying' a country that has 200+ nuclear-weapons, the finest delivery-systems&AirForce the US can provide, two nuke-armed subs off its coast, and the combined military-forces of the sole 'Hyper-Power' acting at it's Beck-and-Call?
“Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday described Tehran as an obstacle to Middle East peace and warned of “serious consequences†if it did not comply with the West’s demands to halt sensitive nuclear work.â€
I hate when either of the insane twins (Bush/Cheney) start talking nonsense and assume their audience is utterly stupid. Just how can Iran’s sensitive nuclear work be an obstacle to the Middle East peace?
Israel has been fighting and screwing the Palestinians for over 50 years now.
Also, the American invasion, occupation, and massacre in Iraq had nothing to do with Iran. The terrorist US is the only warmonger that’s the obstacle to the peace in the Middle East. Bring back the troops from Iraq and stop supporting the lone apartheid state in the Middle East, then you will see peace.

Excellent Article...says it all
"Every night I pray that if there is an Almighty God why does he permit the good to die young and suffer while he allows the world to suffer at the hands of warmongers like our present administration? They live in a sumptuous world and suffer no privations nor does their family while we all suffer such fools."
There are four possibilities:
1) There is no god, in the sense I suspect you mean it.
2) god really is as venal and absurd as neocon christian beliefs make him/her out to be.
3) pain (and other emotions/experiences) is essential to the growth of consciousness, therefore god administers or allows pain for that reason.
4) god is somewhat limited in his powers. Perhaps the astonishing amounts of pain humans experience is actually the result of mitigating efforts by a compassionate god without whom things would be even worse.
Take your pick, I guess, but these are the only four variations not at odds with the facts of experience as I understand them.
Cheney is again attempting to "fix the intelligence" around the already decided on policy.
And just like Iraq, its all speculaton and accusation, and zero substance.
Why do the people of the USA fall for this line of BS time after time after time?
Spelling error. Both 4 letter countries start with I Really Am and end with different letters. So it was difficult to get it spelled correctly on the orders. So, instead of I Really Am Nuts they started with I Really Am Quackers. Or, is there a difference? Now, where's my OIL?

Have you read this??
http://www.esquire.com/features/iranbriefing1107
Chilling..
These bastards are beyond any redemption..
I suggest re-reading the article but everytime you come across the word Iran, replace it with United States...this one simple change brings the article back into the realm of reality for most earthlings. Iran is being targeted for its "lack of respect for neighbours sovereignty", "lack of compliance with international agreements", and for being "a growing obstacle to peace in the Middle East." While you're making substitutions, you might substitute "surge"ing for growing.
This is obscene. And then Syria is being targeted for interfering in foreign elections...another tactic stolen out of Uncle Sam's playbok.
Another chilling example of how hypocrisy is the real weapon of mass destruction. The distruction of rational dialogue, the necessary precursor to the distruction of people, places and things.
PS - Under the Non-Proliferation Treaty, any country is permitted to enrich uranium and build reactors for the sake of civilian use. And under this same treaty, the current possessors of these WMDs are to move towards total disarmament (dropping them doesn't count!) so as to eliminate the desire for others to join the club. So remind me again who is not living up to their agreements?
the greater danger is Cheney unchained.
I just watched "Brazil" this evening. This probablly wasn't the best bedtime storey I could have picked. Merry fucking christmas
I would like to take this opportunity, as a US citizen, to apologize to the civilized world.
Of which we were once a part.
I'm sorry that our president is an imbecile, and our vice-president is a psychopath. In a normal world, a psychopathic vice-president would not be a problem, since vice-presidents are granted almost no powers under our constitution. However, since 9-11, we don't use the constitution anymore.
We are an empire, as the neo-cons proudly proclaimed, and "we make our own reality."
The president's approval rating is currently hovering around 24%. In a normal world, such a political leader would be embarrassed to show his face in public, let alone would he propagate another war. Or let his deranged vice-president do the same.
We would impeach both of them if we had an opposition party. Unfortunately, all we have are corrupt Democrats.
BREAKING NEWS...
Sarkozy Ex-Mossad Agent?
10-18-7
TEHRAN -- A prestigious French daily reported that an email sent to 100 high-ranking police officials claims French President Nicholas Sarkozy is a former agent of the Israeli intelligence services, Mossad.
Le Figaro added that the letter was sent to French police officials late last winter and reiterated that Sarkozy was the fourth high-ranking spy of Israel.
The letter titled "Infiltration of Mossad in France's ruling center-right UMP party" insists that Sarkozy is a spy.
It also writes about widespread corruption in the UMP party.
The letter added that former Israeli prime minister, Menachem Begin, in 1978 ordered the head of his intelligence services to make former French Leader Charles De Gulle's one of Israel's associates.

Is this about oil? I watched CNN's Out of Gas story tonight and although there is lots of propaganda, it makes some interesting points. It also explained how the US military has plans to invade oil nations in the event of another fuel crisis. Is this what were are seeing? Is the US just taking what they want so the Chinese and India can't have it?
Frankly I'm a bit nervous here in Canada. If the US invades Iran and is after oil, then are we next on the radar? Of course we'd fight back
WWII and cancel the election.
"Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday described Tehran as an obstacle to Middle East peace"
How, can Iran be an obstacle to peace? It has never invaded, nor threatened to invade anyone. It is only threatening to defend itself if attacked. There IS no obstacle to peace, Dick - so stop warring, and the middle east will automatically be peaceful (relatively speaking).
Lets see where in the M.E. there isnt peace. Oh - Iraq, thats right, Dick! Were you really trying to bring peace to Iraq, where there was already peace, by bombing the crap out of it and brutally occupying? Its a bit like fucking for virginity! Or eating McDonalds in order to cure obesity. Is it really the celery stick that is the obstacle to slimness?
"very night I pray that if there is an Almighty God why does he permit the good to die young and suffer while he allows the world to suffer at the hands of warmongers like our present administration? They live in a sumptuous world and suffer no privations nor does their family while we all suffer such fools."
it's obvious there's no "almighty god", with the likes of that obese slob in the picture above who wields such power, how can there by anything that resembles a "higher power"???!!!
A "plan" to me sounds to me like an increase of rhetoric about Iran right up to November 2008, but with no actual bombing. That will be Giuliani's job, and we'll be led to believe that no one except someone as strong as him can possibly be trusted with America's safety--due to the ever-impending crisis in Iran.
A half-cocked attempt before then? Can't be sure, but I doubt it.
Here is the pretext. "The greatest threat now is 'a 9/11' occurring with a group of terrorists armed not with airline tickets and box cutters. but with a nuclear weapon in the middle of one of our own cities... its a very real threat." DICK, 4/15/07.
Democracy in America is not dead; it is alive and well. Don't lose hope.
Come on you guys, have a heart! Halliburton stock dipped a little this week, give the guy a break, you want him getting welfare?
Any combination of events, false flag, war with Iran, economic collapse will trigger the police state... and nothing will prevent the police state, especially when about half the country will embrace it, 40% will denounce it, but do nothing, 10% will be marginalized as traitors to the police state.
And keep in mind we're currently living in a spying/surveillance state, and have been for several years now in case you're not yet aware of that. TV, Phone, Internet, Email, where you drive, when you do all these things, what you buy, where you buy it etc etc. You're an open book to the Government.
The revolution in 18th century was carried out by a vast minority, about 20% of the population. They also had a giant sea seperating them from Tyrannical regime. Any revolution in contemporary America will be crushed in an instant, as will revolution ideas/talk/dissent will be systematically crushed as well. All the Viva La Revolution decrees will mean nothing when they send you away to room 101, or worse.
Hillary is making friends with the right people, Obama will be easily bought as well... Guiliani already ran a psuedo-Police State called New York City... Thompson, Romney- if imaginable, are all more fascist talking heads.
Which is why 2008 we should not vote democrat...We need to elect republicans; reason being is do you really want the Fascist Dictatorship in this country to be under the name of the Democrats? It needs to be under the Republican name because it represent's the neo-conservative fascist agenda.
Oh the proles... if they only knew their power...
There was a crooked man and he had a crooked smile.
He found a crooked president to walk with him awhile.
He found a crooked dollar and with that he bought the House.
And together they all blew us up, that crooked little louse.
Bush, Cheney, Rummy and Rice all need to be indicted as the war criminals they are. I am an American, and am ASHAMED to see my countrymen behaving like 1934 Germans. And, where is the opposition? The Dems have not been victimized by something like the burning of the Reichstag, but they are caving to the military-industrial complex as well, to maximize their chances of seizing power in 2009. Democracy in America is dead.
Well, time is running out to bid up all those Halliburton stock options! What we're going to end up with is a vastly more hostile Iran, a more restive, numerous and vengeful Muslim extremist contingent, a tripartite Iraq whose largest segment--and the one with the most oil--will be under Shiite control and probably Iranian influence, a Kurdistan constantly at war with Turkey and an embattled Sunni homeland. Welcome to the New World Order!
Mastershake: If the US does attack Iran... no oil, no more.
Namoses, it's obvious there is no God. If there were, these murdering, greedy psychopaths wouldn't be in charge of the United States.
:(
Why did we go into Iraq? Yes they have oil and people say so but WE do not get that oil ...oil companies do and they charge us what everybody else pays... market rates. Plus we have paid over 500 billion extra for that same oil... we are supposedly 'getting'.
That said, we went into Iraq to construct staging areas for a war with Iran. The plan was always Iran and failing that 'to set the middle east back a dozen years' as Israel did to Lebanon.
Did you ever wonder what people were feeling in 1913 as alliances were made and the spectre of war beckoned? Bush/Cheney offer a nuclear exception to India as a balance to Pakistan falling to extremists upon the advent of a war with Iran. Was that India's price for a war alliance.
Bush and co. presents an arms deal to allies to the south of Iraq. Their price?
Now we see Turkey mobilizing their forces on the northwest of Iraq and it is possible that after an incursion that Turkey may take and hold a slice of Kurdish Iraq as a 'buffer zone'. Is that their price?
Bush and co. face a legacy of failure and corruption but nevertheless they are ideologues and have been as extremist in holding to their agenda, as the fanatical bombers hold to theirs, despite the destructiveness of both extremes in this world.
Bush and co. believe they are right despite failure (excusing their own incompetence and corruption of course) and with perhaps too much fatalism than is healthy or sane... they will like extremists do... go to extreme ends no matter whether that seems insane or not. They focus on their agenda and nothing else.
The danger is that on the way out that they will blindly commit us to the path that they always saw as their ultimate end game. Iran.
Is Cheney insane? Many of our generals think so. But no he isn't insane... he is an ideologue and inherently blind to anything which doesn't go along with 'the plan'.
And the plan was always Iran.
ricg - yes the US & Israel are the obstacles to peace in the M.E. & the whole world, but mostly the USA - Israel would be impotent without the money our misleaders give them.
If it weren't for the mad dog imperialist bastards in washington, other nations wouldn't be concerned too much about their military muscles. The ridiculous fools have revived the arm's race.
Cheney is like a terribly stupid barking dog. May God forbid them from finding the hideous arrogance to bomb Iran.

"The era of manufacturing consent has given way to the era of manufacturing news. Soon media newsrooms will drop the pretense, and start hiring theater directors instead of journalists." Arundhati Roy
65-70% of this country is against military action in Iran.
and when the strikes occur, and the situation turns out to be (more of a) disaster, that number will swell to 80%. Really, only about 1/5th of the country is THAT braindead.
I’m hoping for them to attack Iran…Impeachment will soon follow, as more and more of the crimes of this administration, illegal spying, torture, agression, lies lies lies etc all become exposed.
It is so blatantly evident that it is Cheney who is at the helm of this criminal cabal. It is he, this decrepit maniac who's calling all of the (war) shots and it is he who'll take us further into this Middle East morass i.e. Iran.
Cheney's nothing more than a dastardly War Pig who is profiting from the death, destruction and blood of American
lives, both young and old.
If I could also note that On Oct 23, PBS's Frontline is airing a show titled: Is Iran Next? Showdown with Iran
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/showdown/
It's as though PBS is helping foment yet another horrific and illegal war in the Middle East.
Look at the specials Frontline ran prior to this horrific and illegal Iraq war.
First, on February 20, 2003 The War Behind Closed Doors
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/iraq/ (60 minutes) FRONTLINE examines the hidden story of what is really driving the Bush administration to war with Iraq. The investigation asks whether the publicly reported reasons--fear ...
Then, on March 17, 2003 Frontline aired yet another program called The Long Road to War:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/longroad/
America appears to be within days of attacking Iraq. Many observers believe President Bush may soon signal to weapons inspectors, diplomats and members of ...
Now PBS plans to air yet another special, Showdown with Iran.
The question remains as to whether PBS has become a mouth piece, a tool which this nefarious administration uses to start yet another un-winnable conflict in the Middle East?
Frontline and it's narrator do an excellent job in helping to assuage the American sheeple of any unnessary calamity we could face with Iran.
The irony is that what this dangerous fool and the Commander-in-Chimp say describes what is happening in this country. All along I have been making the prediction of a strike on Iran at or before the end of this year. We saw the first attempt with the "bullshit" Air Farce story that the nuclear missiles on the B-52 were mishandled and that 70 people are being punished (as scapegoats). There was an internal revolt within the the Air Farce, and those with a conscience are being punished because they refuse to decimate another country. Admiral Mullen just gave them the green light for a military strike, so what are they waiting for? My guess is they are trying to figure out how China and Russia will react.
I give two months max before the US bombs the crap out of iran.
The real obstacles to peace in the Middle East are Israel and the United States.
The real obstacles to peace in the world are sociopaths like Cheney and Bush and their profiteering cronies. And the American people who allow them to continue their murderous ways. Which ways include creating more terrorists to feed the madness of American politicians.
Piss on 'em all.
The Dick can shove it...
Cheney is a sick man. Anyone who spends his life promoting war is sick. Very sick.
I wonder what he says to his grandchildren? Does he tell them stories about happily-ever-after I wonder? And when he goes to Church and hears exhortations to 'love thy neighbour' I wonder what happens in his brain, how he fits the irregular pieces of the jigsaw together? Love and War seem to be opposites.
Cheney is not the only sick man in America. Others who profit from war are also sick. Shame they couldn't be certified!
The irony of it all is that when Cheney speaks, all Americans listen, those who love and reverence him as well as those who loathe and fear him. For both, his words translate into action. And now he has spoken about Iran; it will come to pass. The question is When?
Is this a surprise to anyone? Cheny gets the "noble" prize for being the #1 warmonger of all time. He is probably playing a replay of the buildup to the Iraq invasion and just substituting Iran. Great guy!!
