Palestinians Prepare to Stand Up for What Matters
RAMALLAH - While the international community concentrates on final status negotiations between the Palestinian government and Israel, the Palestinian people plan to stand up Oct. 17 to show the world what really matters to them.
Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians are expected to take part in demonstrations highlighting poverty and inequality in the Occupied Palestinian Territories (OPT). Palestinians in the territories number three to four million.
Oct. 17 has been picked as the United Nations-recognized International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
The demonstration will be part of the larger Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), a banding together of international NGOs, social movements, trade unions, women's organizations and other civil society actors in an attempt to draw attention to global poverty.
This call to end poverty is especially relevant in the Occupied Palestinian Territories - 46 percent of all Palestinians do not have enough food to meet their basic needs, according to the United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA).
In Ramallah, the de facto capital of the OPT, a large procession will take to the streets through the city center. Peaceful demonstrations have also been planned in small villages, towns and large population centers throughout the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, along with a number of his ministers, is expected to address the crowds in Ramallah.
Later in the evening, a myriad of cultural events will be held at the Palestinian Cultural Palace. These events will include traditional dancing, singing, and performances by Palestinian youths.
In Nablus, 500 students from al-Najah University, the largest in the northern OPT, will assert their right to education by holding a rally on campus.
"We will give speeches, show pictures, and discuss the issues that really matter to us. We want to educate ourselves freely and without restriction. Education is a right that everyone must have," Mohammad Khareis, a resident of Nablus and organizing member of the student rally told IPS.
In Gaza, a conference will be held on the right to work and to social protection. The conference will conclude with the submission to the United Nations of a petition highlighting the specific troubles that citizens of the Gaza strip face daily.
While the majority of activities will take place on Oct. 17, some events will last a week or more.
One of these will be the provision of free medical services over a period of two weeks. Funded in part by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), this will include free medical consultations, medical examinations in mobile and stationary clinics, and a move to raise awareness on general health issues.
Ahmad Ayesh, member of the Palestine Medical Relief Society (PMRS) and one of those helping to coordinate the medical services, says Palestinians face huge difficulties in accessing medical care.
"The illegal wall that Israel is building has cut off many villagers from their agricultural land. They are very poor, and cannot afford to go to the doctor, and because of the checkpoints they can't reach the medical centers very easily either," he told IPS.
"We hope to touch the people who suffer the most," he said.
In Tulkarem, 45 km from Ramallah, textile workers plan meetings on issues such as job security and the ability to obtain work permits in Israel.
And across both the West Bank and the Gaza strip, schoolchildren will assemble on playgrounds to stand up against poverty. Candlelight vigils will be held in solidarity with people across the globe.
"Our voice will be combined with voices from around the world, united in achieving our goals," Khareis said.

Show AllWe too must do everything possible to voice our support for Palestine. We must also not fall for supporting any agreement that creates a prison bantustan as the "Palestinian State." They must either have true independence and self determination with international (and especially US) support or they must all be declared equal citiznes of Israel/Palestine.
The Palestinians have been occupied and terrorized by the US backed Israelies for 40 years already. SHAME ON THE USA & ISRAEL!! End the occupation of Palestinian Territories NOW!

"Jewish people everyhere… have lived daily in the remembrance of that event when 6 million Jews died in the death camps of Germany. But so did millions of other people: Gypsies, Poles, Hungarians, Romanians and Russians died in the same way, in the same places. We do not hear these laments from the Russians or the Poles or the Gypsies, from the people of Romania, or any of the Eastern European countries." Benjamin Creme

Apparently the holocaust is used to feed some Jewish people's self-pity, and to get pity from others.
SHAME ON THE USA & ISRAEL!! End the occupation of Palestinian Territories NOW!
The military/political complex of the USA & ISRAEL are the two biggest terrorist organizations on the planet.
They kill and cripple children on a regular basis, without any remorse.

Even if all the Israelis try to create peace, the Iranians and the lot of middle east regimes will sabotage any peace. The insurgency of hamas and hezbollah are terrorizing till the bitter end while Iran and the rest of the middle east regimes continue to create their slave labor for your COMMON DREAMS VIEWERS READY TO MOVE TO DUBAI SO YOU CAN EXPLOIT SEX SLAVERY. YOUR OIL remains intact to exploit and deflect YOUR own tyranny onto Israel. This never ending cycle of deflection is the history that has taken place and will continue , for I see these piss poor common dreams comments and this tells me your intellectual society is ready to keep on festering away because you cant see outside your little box of imperialism.
THE DAY COMMONDREAMS ACKNOWLEDGES THE FACT THAT ISRAEL AND PA HAVE BEEN USED TO KEEP MIDDLE EAST REGIMES EXPLOITING, IS THE DAY WE CAN MAKE PEACE. UNTIL THEN YOUR ALL JUST WELL, WRONG!!!!!!
Ecosutra,
How the hell did you find out that us Common Dreamers were goin to Dubai to Exploit Sex Slavery?
I thought that was a secret... somebody call Security!
JIM, LOL
FURTHER MORE, The people who are working to truly make peace are the permaculture institutions in the Arava desert. The PA's and Israelis working together to restore and accelrate earths processes are feeling the political defelction as well. I documented this experiment and its in my film. I cant stomach the deflections.
How will there be any change in the shift back to sustainable living when Liberals scapegaot their imperial fear onto Israel and the neo cons getting ready for rapture fight for Israel for all the wrong reasons? This is why you have sided with tyranny in the middl east. TO bad really. Friends like these who needs enemies.
Damn, do you think my Groucho-Marx glasses are still enough of a disguise for the flight to Dubai, or do I need a better disguise now that the word is out?
Have you been taking your medicine, Ecosutra?
Permaculture revolution is happening whether your imperialness acknowledge it or not. People you must know that your either going to pick up out of the machine of consolidation and be a part of the turning point or by 2012 you will be a part of the tipping point. I dont care who turns. I have turned and in 2 years I will be completely eco nested. I pitty you all and wish you would stop this deflection.
I want an end to genocide and states based on ethnic cleansing. Can you hear that? How about a sustainable human culture?
Permaculture revolution is happening whether you imperial liberal scapegoaters acknowledge it or not. "Sustainable Human culture" is part of permaculture. Meanwhile, Atlanta is the first city to run out of water, I cant believe it, my home town. Florida is consuming all the water. Out sourcing is not a sustainable human culture. Do you know how festering you are in AMerica?
There is only one sock manufacturer in America left.
Where can I buy my cheap airline tickets?
Ecosutra, I agree with your goal of becoming independent and of getting the world to live in a sustainable manner. However, I don't understand what makes you think that those of us who post on this site all want to move to Dubai to exploit sex slavery, or that we hate Israel. Nor do I see the reason you think the common writer here on Common Dreams is an imperialist. "YOUR ALL JUST WELL, WRONG!!!!!!" (Sic) *It's "you're", not "your." Which if the ability to write in English is any indication of your ability to comprehend what you read then that explains your lack of ability to understand what are commonly the progressive views of the vast majority of those who take the time to make comments on articles printed daily by Common Dreams.
Good luck on your efforts at sustainable living – the world needs to learn that, and to learn it fast.
The discussion of Palestine or Israeli misdeeds in the "territories" are taboos in America, and AIPAC and ADL are making sure it stays that way. Is it too early to bid farewell to American freedom of expression?
That Illegal Wall has cut off many people.
People like Jewish neighbors and lifelong 'christian' siblings and classmates.
Marcus Aurelius and Sam Colt had different ways of dealing with difficult people. Alas, either way works. If this wound ever heals I fear that it will not be in our lifetimes.
Ok, so I am not the best in grammer, I am a world traveller, I have lived a unique life. I see both sides and remember history. I have a strong picture of reality from being press at the Peak Oil conference at Boston University, to documenting energy designs that can empower villages. So when I see the timeline of what the fossil fuel era constructed on earth (DUBAI), and how that resource diminished will effect humanity in its oneness dealing with natures natural patterns. You dont want to go there. None of you do, so what do you do, you deflect with selective hearing and call on Israeli misdeeds as genocidal insults. Your systems of slavery make you imperialists. 10 cents an hour global slave wage. 60 minutes last night supporting Dubai when those emirish snobs who spit on everyones rights. I really want to know when the rest of you are going to get on my train and start focusing on a local food web system. You are either on this sIte for knowledge which leads to wisdom or you just get spoon fed a course of information that leads to WAKING UP ONE DAY ASKING WHY THERE IS NO ENERGY AROUND. I have a hard time believing that the founders of this great resource of information are not looking to leap towards some wisdom. The inventor of the web browser told me this weekend that the internet can not bring about wisdom. I'd like to believe he was wrong. I want direction! I want purpose, planning, development. And Common Dreams posting this article is their own form of system of slavery to perpetuate imperialsm. I dont care if they know it or not, you're still guilty. Its like a bank robber asks his friend to stop and let him out and wait and drive away, the driver is guilty even though he was unaware of the situation. This goes the same with your unaware ability to foresee what planet earth will be in 2012 the date of peak oil. Foolish people to me you all are. I need a migration to eco nesting and have a burningman culture. Thats me, I dare you to make the shift.
Much as the American (and French) Revolution brought the framework of Liberty and Freedom (from monarchs and empires) to the world, and WWII brought the idea of fighting State Facism to whe world...
I pray for a World Revolution to be brought to a head with resource wars, global warming, global trade, and global poverty.... creating a new standard bearer against corporatism- and advancing the march of Liberty and Equality and Justice for All!
Tak a moment and pray with me :)

Ecosutra, you wrote:
"I have turned and in 2 years I will be completely eco nested. I pitty you all and wish you would stop this deflection."
Is that how long we need to wait for you to stop this verbal assualt? We get it (not really), you're environmentally superior, and we mere mortals will never understand the way's in which our lack of understanding of environmental issues leads to our deflection of blame to the Israelis instead of the Palestinians....er, or Iranians...or something. Sheesh!
Sorry folks, I know this is usually a tolerant spot, but this senseless drivel (or maybe I'm just not ecologically attuned enough to hear the sense in it all?) just needed to be commented on!!
well i usually avoid commenting on these sites, but maybe i have sthg to share with those irritated by this "ecosutra" character.
I usta "troll" on Indymedia Israel & then on IMC Palestine when they started that, bout the time of the siege of Bethlehem, in early 2002 -- or was it 2003? So I had plenty of exposure to nuts like "ecosutra". Early on they usta get me all mad, I'd try to argue with them etc etc.
But eventually I caught on to the game: they're just AIPAC supporters with time on their hands, so they asked a Honcho "how can I help the Cause?" & got assigned to going on websites & trying to start "flamewars", to get intelligent people to engage with them -- all for the purpose of wasting your time.
So my take is simple: just shine 'em on.
I can only hope I get to see peace in the Middle East. My 17 year old used to attend a Friend's School, her very good friend from Gaza was a student at George, as well. He was on full scholarship and a 4.0 avg. he went home after his junior year to see family. First, he found out his younger brother was shot to death 15 ft. away from his home by the Israeli Army. Why? The baby, an infant, had no milk, he took a chance and made a dash to the store for milk after curfew, for this he was murdered. My daughter's friend was ready to return to the US to graduate, his senior year, so exciting. The Israeli Gov't denied his ability to leave. We have heard from him, his words but most dramatic, the photos. Tanks trained on their homes, what they call a home, soldiers , fully armed waiting.....
Israel does not have the trademark on genocide, there were nuns, priests, Gay people, Poles and more that tally up to almost as many millions murdered during the Holocaust. It does not diminish the fact that they were victims, yet look at our world, Rwanda, Darfur, Iraq and next I am sure will be Iran.
Many of us have been victims of atrocities but many refuse to become victimized for generations by the prior.
The Palestinian people want peace. Unfortunately, Arab governments do NOT want peace, nor does the Palestinian leadership. Peace would remove the boogyman that the Arab governments use to scare their people, and would make it harder for the Palestinian leadership to steal from their own people. Anyone seen Arafat's widow's palace in Paris?
It is all fine and good to talk about ecology, being sustainable, and other worthy acts, but it does not change the facts of what Israel is doing to the Palestinians. You have the bedouins being forced out of their dwelling areas, because they are basically a nuisance to expanding settlements. Leaders on both sides seem to be reluctant to make a true peace, but I put more blame on the Israelis as they are the more powerful, and can act more authoritatively, but refuse to do so. As for the terrorist actions of hezbollah, and hamas, what is Israel doing to the Palestinians? A slow death? How is that not terrorism?
These people are being forced to live in squalor, poverty, and now within an area surrounded by a wall? Much like a prison, and Israel is hardly the innocent party in all this, too often acting like a state, many Israeli's learned to hate back in history.....really not that long ago. How short memories can be.
Jonas the Prophet:
I checked out the website you cited and saved it to my "favorites." It IS very helpful and will refer to it often.
Thanks.

cuibono, why can't you see the connection between the Palestinian creation and the history of Middle East regime tyranny and their global energy piracy within the middle east? Islamic jihad has tried everything (terror) to keep the modern world out. And here you are supporting the uncivilized. Funny really.
If you want a Palesinian state tell jordan, Egypt and syria to give up land as well for the creation. Why should Israel be the only one. We all know that the Palestinians are from Egypt , Jordan, and Syria.
What really urks me? these self loathing liberals have to demand sacrifices from outside of their own world, when very soon you wil be asked to make the most sacrifice in the history of humanity. When Peak oil comes and you have to get out onto the earth and do the permaculture work, the swales, gabions. and water harvesting , energy integrated systems for local living, food harvesting, ect. I cant wait to see you spoiled deflectors out on the fields picking the superweeds you have created through your GM mutated crops. Or dealing with all the pests from no longer able to manage a toxic soil that has been sprayed with toxic nitrates for generations. Do you realize how fucked you are? I do! thats a heavy burden to carry realizing the situation to its most detailed timeline. Katrina was a blessing for us ecologists. We have that as a perfect tool to show ones ready to shift how not to react during shock. Im through with fear. The solutions are so beautiful and I loved seeing the individuals in Israel , both Jews and arabs living together in the Arava desert , training in permaculture. This is the pathway to peace. So go on and spin your wheels about injustice to Palestine. blah blah blah blah blah!!!!!!!! You are fooling yourselves. Does it make you feel powerful? Does it make you feel POWERFUL to deflect all your unsustainable festering life styles onto Israel? Huh?!!!!!
Right on Ecosutra! What is really missing in your rant is the Zionist claim that the Palestinians are squatting on the land that God has given the Jews. You can hide out all you want in your permaculture, but unless you are getting your god after their god you are missing the point of who has the right to oppress other people. You never deny in thousands of words of posting that the occupation is going on.
I hate to read a rabid zionist that doesn't get religious supremacy dogma out front and center. Of course, God gave the land to Israel. And why should the arabs or anyone care so long as the chosen people get the promised land.
Now, if you are of the part of the human race that doesn't believe that there is such a thing as a chosen people, then you are just part of the unsustainable, unblessed mass of humanity.
Please, Ecosutra don't call anyone else arrogant. You have the monopoly on it.
This Ecosutra fellow is obviously an AIPAC guy trying to divert the issue from the plight of Palestinians at the hands of the occupier/apartheid Israel. Ignore this miserable creature, and let's get back on topic.
Yes there is a horrible force of walls and fear to go around. The timeline has created a system of slavery for us all, whether its PA Gaza conditions or the looting of the US treasury and its mortgage system.
I have an eco dome that can live in the desert with no AC in cool comfort, cost less than 5 grand.
I am in love with the idea of a state of jewish people. I love the networking of it. The technology is an earth saver, Algae bio diesel, solar thermal, bio gas, ect. I am networking and love it and I have the network to activate the revolution. I made a film that is the network. I am waiting for sundance approval. Im open heart on my sleeve because I know its time for critical thinking. Im trying to raise the alarm through attitude adjustments. Not arrogance, I am humble and grateful for the network and If I am rude to you all I am because I cant wait any longer for America to shift.
There are many people in Australia and NZ, who have been praying for years, for a legalised State of Palestine, living side by side in relative peace with the State of Israel. Time is a great healer, and every day brings this inevitability closer.
Will that wall finally encircle the zionist, and will that keep people in or people out?
To Ecosutra,
"friends like these who needs enemies". exactly my sentiments,...along with the families of the U.S. sailors murdered and crippled by our "friends" the Israelis. The same folks who've been "spoon feeding" the world the lies of the "holocaust", spied on The U.S. sheeple, the nation smaller than most of our states, the one with the 5th largest military in the world, paid for by the same friends they've betrayed over and over and over....GO PALISTINE!! The only sad thing in all this is there are many decent Jews who will pay the price when the U.S. sheeple grow brains and balls enough to "cast out" their "friend and ally in the middle east. One nasty little nation folks. Remember Rachal et al.
P.S.
The U.S. is FULL of "shift"
Ecosutra.
Not sure about what you're getting at, but a good example of deflection would certainly be taking an article about Palestinian peaceful protest and "deflecting" it into a debate about permaculture and water.
But if you want to talk about that, even there you appear to be quite contradictory. You cite taking the side of the uncivilized, but the uncivilized live more closely to permaculture and live in far less waste than fossil fuel using cultures "civilized" cultures.

I want to thank CD for publishing this article. The anti-free press sentiments of Ecosutra and his attempt to stifle views of both sides of the conflict are beneath contempt.
Is everybody in the mid-east on Prozac or something?
My opinion: Israel has no right to exist if Palestien has no right to exist. The Jewish lobby has destablized the entire region by funding an arms build up for this sickening police state. As is the case here, I understand that many jews are part of a peace movement there and are against this continued agression. But right now, warmongers all over the world are on the warpath and here in the US Dr Strangelove is in the driver's seat and we are all grave peril.
As usual, the causes of all this misery is religion and oil. Get rid of both and we will have a thousand years of peace.
I agree with Jaded Parole's very first comment on the story.
"There is only one sock manufacturer in America left"...I'm wearing that 'sock' on my left foot and it's got a hole in it already. That means we are genuinely stuffed...
The Palestinian atrocity has gone on long enough. It must end. This can only be achieved if the USA *tells* Israel to get out of Palestine, and leave Palestinian resources, particularly water, to be consumed by their rightful owners, who are hungry, thirsty, homeless, occupied, virtually enslaved in their own land.

What has been done to the Palestinians is a disgrace to humanity. For years the Israelis have perpetrated a holocaust against the palestinians; and the world powers have supported and enabled the tactics of Israel every step of the way.
It is sickening. The world is complicit in acts of genocide against the palestinian people. Israel and the major powers are guilty of acts of genocide against the palestinians; plain and simple.
Complaint after complaint has been filed against Israel at the international level, and yet each and evey time the complaint is squelched.
It is positively shameful and criminal, as well. Israel needs to answer to these complaints; Israel needs to face international sanctions, and Israel needs to take their boot heel off the neck of palestinians. Enough is enough. Period.
Good to see you back Vets, I mean Ecosutra.
Salia agreed. The disinfo agents always show up like clockwork and they get us all wound up in arguments by spewing misinformation and we all get distracted into correcting it. Ignoring it is better.
dc ... "The disinfo agents always show up like clockwork "
Shouldnt this read 'cockroach' !!
The world-traveller ecoustra clearly hasnt learnt a thing from his/her world travels ... maybe you should start all over again ... this time stop over in Gaza and Ramallah ...
Last night I watched a recreation of the release of Belsen prisoners which my uncle as a Scotish soldier took part in. I also look at the horendous treatment of Palestinians by the same people so liberated. In the name of which God you US of I's worship, you MUST realise that the main solution to the Middle Easts problems are sorting out the Israeli/Palestine problems. Once upon a time we held the USA and Israel in our highest regard. No more.
If you want to see the future of America look at Palestine. If you want to save the future of America Free Palestine.
Only through nonviolent resistance are we Free.
We are all Palestinians. Margaret Bryant
It is a poisonous abscess that is infecting the whole area. It will soon be too late if it isn't already. I think that would be fine with Israel so the spotlite won't be on them anymore and the 'crazy irrational' Arabs will just be everyone's problem. It is ironic that the persecuted have become the persecutors, but then again, they say most child molesters were themselves abused as children so I guess it makes sense.
The "Palestinians" (most of whom were not native to "Palestine") have been waging war against Israel since 1948.
Rockets, mortars and suicide bombers do little to entice Israel to tear down the fence and let the "Palestinians" enjoy and prosper in the economy of Israel which thousands of them used to be allowed to do.
It also doesn't entice Israel to give back the West Bank or Gaza again because the Israels know that the moment they do, a new barrage of rockets and mortars will begin to rain down on the Israeli populace again.
So far none of the Palestinian leadership has made any effort to make peace with Israel.
even today hamas rejects rice and abbas attempt for a PA state!!!!!!
These imperial liberal scapegoaters have selective hearing. I really am frustrated with the common dream direction.
I bet anyone of these jerk offs, if we rid get rid of the oil we get peace in Israel.
Ecosutra the oil lobby doesn't make our foreign policy towards Israel this is incorrect. AIPAC does.
dcbeltway, yes your piracy of oil dictates our foreign policy, and if using the Israeli landscape as a means to deflect the piracy of world resources so that, Darfur can remain oppressive because the Gava Tree supplies 90% of the world gum for paper, or that the Iranians build nuclear reactors when they are an oil rich nation, or that, hmm I can come up with more, wait... Oh ya, instead of owning up to your on food, water and energy, America has to accept the consolidated oneness that has infected your culture. So of course you're going to look onto something else besides the unsustainable tipping point your so now in.
shame on you dc, looking at some AIPAC lobby as the main source of energy for the horrible direction humanity is in. Kabooom Post, I wonder how dcbeltway feels right now?
