Nobel Win 'Would Boost Hopes of Gore Candidacy'
Al Gore never quite closed the door on running for president again and his many loyalists are now pinning their hopes on Norway's Nobel committee, in the belief that the prize must be his, this year of all years.
The Nobel Prize will be announced on Friday in Oslo and for many, Mr Gore is head and shoulders above the other 181 candidates. The Nobel committee also has a reputation for making political choices. A peace prize may soon be added to the Emmy he won for his Current TV channel and the Oscar that was awarded last February for his call to arms on climate change, An Inconvenient Truth.
With little debate among candidates about America's role in causing global warming, the Draft Gore movement has been growing by leaps and bounds. It boasts a website that puts most official presidential candidates to shame. It has petitions to sign, a campaign song to sing, Draft Gore buttons, DVDs and ways to contact other Gore enthusiasts. Pre-written opinion articles are on hand on the site urging Mr Gore to run which his supporters are encouraged to plagiarise and send to their local newspaper.
The supporters' group has already gathered about 127,000 signatures this year - 10,000 of them in the last week of September alone - and is planning to take out full-page advert in The New York Times as an open letter urging Mr Gore to run. "We feel that if [Mr Gore] wins the Nobel Prize ... then he can't not run for president," Roy Gayhart, the man behind California's Draft Gore group, told Newsweek.
Mr Gore has said nothing to indicate he might run, and his Nashville headquarters is silent on the question. But people close to the former vice-president are convinced that he is looking for an opportunity to jump in the race as a candidate who really is prepared to bring about urgent change in the face of the looming disaster posed by global warming.
So far in the presidential campaign, candidates have run shy of embracing aggressive measures to deal with America's contribution to climate change. Hillary Clinton, the leading Democratic candidate, has the weakest environmental record of all. And Barack Obama took until this week to come up with proposals that won favour with environmentalists, after first backing a disastrous scheme to subsidise turning coal into petrol.
Mr Obama's plan is full of proposals drafted by climate scientists, including limits on carbon emissions, energy-efficiency targets and billions of dollars for energy research. There is not a word about turning coal into liquid.
The next few weeks are considered crucial for a Gore candidacy. A petition drive for New York State must gather 5,000 signatures between the end of October and early December if he is to be legally entitled to be on the ballot. In Michigan, Gore supporters must get more than 12,000 signatures, and a signed statement by Mr Gore himself to get on next year's primary ballot. His backers are hopeful, however, looking to a recent local TV poll that had 36 per cent of Democratic voters backing him, beating Mrs Clinton with 32 per cent.
But even those who expect him to get the Nobel Prize are unsure they can persuade Mr Gore to run. "I know it's still a real long shot that he'll run," said Fred Koed, of the Massachusetts Draft Gore group. "If I were in his shoes, after the devastating and painful loss in 2000, I'd really have to search inside myself to see if it was all worth doing again. He'll have to determine if this is right for him."

Show Allmaxhemust, dont be naive..gore IS the ruling elite, and so is kerry...they do not represent change, they have always been on the side of the nefarious and the nabob.
GO AL GO! What a tremendous thing his candidacy (and I think presidency) would be in about 10 ways at once---not least, showing that it is indeed OK to think and speak and act like a world-class adult with all the mental lights on. Hillary would shrink before our eyes...
WOW! Finally, some good news! He is the only person that I can think of who can really turn this country around!!! PLEASE DO IT, AL! WE NEED YOU!
GORE + KUCINICH = A FREE, SANE, AND (PEACEFULLY) POWERFUL
AMERICA FOR SIXTEEN YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd be delighted to see Al Gore as President. But, to win, he must only run as a Democrat, not as a fracturing Independent. And, Nobel prize or not, he must hit the ground with a full slate of appealing policy positions that make sense on the war, security, health care, taxes, deficits, Social Security, and guns. (Remember, Al got beat last time not in Florida, but in the three states he lost, (including his own Tennessee) just for talking too much about gun control. Global warming is important for sure, but having Al's main platform be hog-tying corporations on emissions in America, while China and India do as they please, is a sure recipe for losing. Giuliani would walk all over that, and we citizens would, of course, lose again.
AL AL AL AL AL AL AL AL AL AL AL A LA A ALALA A AL A ALALA ALAA ALAL ALA LALALALALALALALAL wE NEED YOU. Al Gore would level the playing field. Like a hurricane come through. The other fools would be ouot of business in a heartbeat. Al is the only viable candidate (oops, I mean, would be the only viable candidate).
LOL. Al Gore to the rescue!
Unless he promises to end the war, establish universal health care, and sign the kyoto treaty in a very unabiguous manner, he will not be getting my vote.
4 points:
1. Will the real 2000 presidential winner please stand up and be counted. Let's turn back the tide and usher in a do-over... we can't bring back those that died in Iraq & Afghanistan, but we perhaps can SAVE a lot more lives.
2. HOW do we donate money to that NY Times ad. I would gladly help with that!
3. Given that the world IS watching, I can't imagine the Nobel Prize NOT going to Gore... as he is not only America's hope (flawed that he may be), but the world's!
4. Any male that serves the God-dess by respecting nature over capitalist exploitation run amok will have the assistance of heavenly forces.
and will the distinguished senator from likud again be his running mate? until gore apologizes, at least to the florida voters whose fight to be reenfranchised he torpedoed, his sincerity is as suspect as his me-too environmentalism.
A nobel prize winner as president? A slight change from the presidential caliber we are presently used to.
Okay a really big change from the presidential caliber we are presently used to.
please remember that henry kissinger also won a nobel peace prize (tom lehrer said that was the day satire died).
And once Gore runs and starts raising huge amounts of cash, will he be the same Al Gore that was drafted to run?
Reagan was given a peace prize as well. For all Gore has done to highlight the peril of global warming, he has done next-to-nothing to stop it. Not only did he squander opportunities to fight *for* the environment as VP, he went back on numerous campaign promises. He will never lead a fight against climate change because it would mean hitting capitalists in their pocketbooks--something he and all Democrats are loathe to do.

Gore has to remake himself again! He has to toughen up! Don't give up any challenges of disputed votes! Don't pick Lieberman again as VP! Come out unambiguously to get out of Iraq! Promise not to bomb Iran! Have universal health care, not run by insurance companies! Restore habeas corpus across the board. Keep Bill Clinton in retirement. Then you will have my support.
The Nobel prize has always been a farce.
I am glad it gave one to Kissinger so as to completely debase it. Its galling enough to see vivisectionists getting the prize every year in medicine. But that's in keeping with the spirit of a man who invented dynamite--after a false obituary appeared he decided to start the prize so he could have a different legacy.
Why would a Nobel Prize help? The people who love Al would already be voting for him, and the people who hate Al wouldn't be swayed. A Prize wouldn't change that.
"and will the distinguished senator from likud again be his running mate? until gore apologizes, at least to the florida voters whose fight to be reenfranchised he torpedoed, his sincerity is as suspect as his me-too environmentalism."
hamzat, get your head out of your american ass.
an Al Gore candidacy would be a disaster. Progressives: abandon your false illusions in the Democratic party. You asked them to stop the war--they funded it. You asked them to halt the erosion of our civil liberties--they approved warrantless wiretaps. They are the US's second party of capital. They approve of using the US's military and economic power around the globe in order to maintain our hegemony. They are not our party--they only seek to delude us into believing so because they need our votes.
Until we abandon these corporate jackals and learn to rely on ourselves and our own grassroots organizing we will never win anything we deserve.
The Democrats *oppose* progress. The only reason they have a reputation for progress is because of the mass social movements in the 30's, 60's and 70's that *pushed* them into granting some reforms. Only a new mass movement can force them (or the Republicans) to grant new reforms.
entertaining hopes of an Al Gore candidacy will only divert energy and resources from building a real movement for change.
Having a Nobel Prize winner lead the USA? Now THAT would be a change from a fundamentalist redneck with an IQ of 80 who talks to himself.
WTF: hardly. *Reagan* won the nobel peace prize--and his IQ was on par with W. And though "god" wasn't giving him instructions, the stars were (as his astrologer can attest).
Al Gore would kick Hillary Clinton's ass right down the road where it belongs....I agree with

GORE + KUCINICH = A FREE, SANE, AND (PEACEFULLY) POWERFUL AMERICA FOR SIXTEEN YEARS!
Hamzat: You are never going to get a SAINT that 'walks on water' running as President; lets face it!!! Al is the next best thing!
Anybody still think there was no difference between Gush and Bore in 2000?
No matter. It's too late. Gore isn't going to be president.
And no, he doesn't deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for giving lectures and making a movie about global warming.
I believe Gore will win the presidency if he enters.
PLEASE DO SO President Gore!
no difference in policy. after all, "regime change" was the US's official policy on Iraq, thanks to the law Clinton signed in 1998. Clinton/Gore did more to deregulate the media and accelerate concentration of the airwaves and newspapers than Reagan/Bush did. Clinton ended welfare--something Republicans have been salivating over since it was started in the 30's. Clinton led more military interventions around the world in his 8 years than Ford, Carter, Reagan and Bush Sr. combined. It's useless to speculate about what Gore would have done after 9/11, but judging from the Democrats in Congress it's a safe bet that the US would be using its "war on terror" bullshit to justify military attacks against nations that refuse to bend to our will.
DONT GET YOUR HOPES UP.AL GORE IS AN AVATAR.IN 1992,algore admonished bush41,for not going after saddam, algore is a LONGTIME advocate in favor of war with the middle east.algore led the charge to revoke our first ammendment rights of free speech, favoring censorship of free speech.algore used enough electricity to light up a small country,UNTIL HE WAS CAUGHT.algore, for all of his adult life has added to his considerable fortune, thru excavations of the earth's resources.algore is quite aware of the covert'experiments'that have been going on in the arctic region for some time..radiation and electromagnetics, could well be behind the acceleration of the catastrophe in the arctic....no one person in this whole world has been made richer by global warming than algore.algore has been wrangling for war in the middle-east for decades.dont be fooled again, americaal gore is the corporate world's hero and SECRET WEAPON !!algore is planted in the 'progressive world'by large corporate interests,to trip you up and fool all of you, again.it is all a show........do your homework..
I feel as if we, the liberal/progressive wing of the US, have been repeatedly screwed so many times in the last 40 years, we're almost afraid to believe in such a thing. And when the possibility appears, we also necessarily look at the mixed track record of someone who, like every other politician, seems to be of the "bought-and-sold" variety.
What we need to keep in mind is that Al Gore, with all his faults, has spoken truth to power like no other prominent national politician. And he has done so throughout the entire reign of the Bush Administration. In fact, only the scars from the 2000 electoral battle seem likely to discourage him from throwing his hat back in the ring.
We need a true leader. Gore might be flawed, but I'm convinced that he's the absolute best we've got!

i don't expect to find many water-walkers seeking elective office, but authenticity, as demonstrated by kucinich, would be a welcome change. gore doesn't belong in the same sentence, much less on the same ticket.
I agree with celebrity - Gore/Kucinich would be my ideal.
I can't see how Al Gore can NOT run in view of the fact that none of the current candidates is putting climate change very high on their lists of priorities.
He is passionate and certain about the dangers we face, how could he possibly let a chance of presidency pass without at least trying. I feel sure he'd get the nomination and will the election if he did run.
People say that he'd probably get the job of Climate Czar, or some such title, in the administration of whoever wins the election - but that position would have limited power - all proposals would surely be liable to the president's veto? It's not enough.
Please Mr Gore, if you love this planet - please run !!
Dream on.
Remember Jesse Ventura, the former boxer who ran for governor in Minnesota? People said he didn't have a chance. People prophesied that the Independent Party didn't have the ghost of a chance. Well, as an Independent, he won! and was an unexcelled governor! What does that tell you, Friends?
On a scale of 1-10, I rate Kucinich a 9, Dubya gets a 1 (Karl Rove really deserves the point for mass hookwinking), most of the other Republican 2008 hopefuls get a zero (the best they can get for trying to imitate Dubya),Clinton genrously gets a 2, most of the other Democratic Party 2008 hopefuls get 2 to 4 points, Ron Paul gets a 4, Richardson and Gore get a rating of 5.
to siouxrose, go to draft al gore dot com to donate or sign any petitions.
as for some of you running down al gore i wonder where you get some of your disinformation, rush limbaugh or bill oreilly?
it would be fantastic if he did run, but i think this presidency has already been bought and paid for so i doubt he'll run, anymore than he stood up to the murder threatening bush crime family when he was instructed to have the senate stand down and not sponsor a congressman to protest the 2000 election.
this whole deal has been scripted down to the
color of their suits.
and another thing, i know Ron Paul is the flavor of the month, but watch out for a wolf in wool, hes a true libertarian, which means he will eliminate social security, he believes in no social programs whatsoever.....
Even if he runs, and wins most of the votes - the question of whether or not he becomes president would be up to the ruling elite - the same bastards who chose Bush over Gore & Kerry, contrary to the will of the people.
American elections are theatre - what the people think they are seeing is NOT what is happening.
I VOTED FOR ALGORE AS 'THE LESSER OF THE EVILS'IN 2000,I WAS VERY DEPRESSED,when the presidency was stolen.i used to think of nadar as the spoiler, but now i realize he was right-there is no difference between the two.i had forgotten my own history..when frank zappa ran for president,al gore went after him and other musicians over their right to free speech...al gore even proposed an overhaul of our ammendment, algore wanted censorship, but it was not zappa's music, gore was trying to silence,it was zappa's political genius..zappa was a political genius,it rivaled even his musical ability.there used to be a website that contained ALL of zappa's political writings, but i can no longer find it in complete form.i have also been an ear-witness to al gore's many public statements over the years concerning his desire for war in the middle east.and algore's corporate ventures and overconsumption of resources is public record.i will no longer vote for the lesser of evils, because he is NOT the lesser evil..JUST AS BUSH WAS CREATED TO FOOL THE RIGHT..SO ALGORE IS CREATED TO FOOL THE LEFT !!and once both the right and left are fooled, well then it will come to pass and be said that ALL were fooled and that will be the judgement.why,do you think that all you'progressives'are better than the other side..i hope you are not so blinded that once again,we will have to find out..that we are no better........
hazmat and whitewatersally are on the money.
Gore has been saying all the right things in recent years but I don't trust him. Remember Elian Gonzalez? Remember cozying up to Israel so much that it even embarrassed Ed Koch? Remember VP candidate Lieberman? Many thought that Gore would have moved more quickly against Iraq than Bush did had Gore been president.
frank zappa? okay well thats enough for me......another day another topic....hurry
Al Gore run for President? What, so he can appoint uberZionist Liberman as his running mate and allow the Republicans to steal another election giving us even more political repression? Yeah, right Al.
liberalw/attitude..you certainly live up to your name !in LITHUANIA THEY TORE DOWN THE STATUE OF LENIN AND REPLACED IT WITH ZAPPA !apparently they read,in lithuania.
Just take a minute to imagine living in a society where the leader would be a force toward solving the most pressing issues for all peoples. Not lying, whining or war mongering rather vitalizing human energy in a positive way.
I can barely make my mind go there.
Could Gore do it? My first reaction to his candidacy is YES but what is this based upon? Is it just because every other candidate is uninspiring or is Gore truly the best?
No trust in this individual whatsoever. I'll give him credit for 2 things: giving up easy and knowing how to make himself look as if he's actually doing something.
AL: I have already sent you my 2 cents asking you to run.
The world needs you!
I know that you are not perfect, but you are still head & shoulder above the rest of the frontrunners.
Please run Al!
Why all of the nasty Hate Gore rhetoric? If you don't like him, Don't Vote for him, but if he is drafted and gets on the ballot, then live with it. There are a large number of folks who still feel that he does have a very good chance and I am positive that if he had been 'CHOSEN' instead of Bush that we would not be in the quagmire that we call 'THE war on terror.' Put Gore with Kucinich and put some diplomacy back into foreign relations. At least they can walk the walk when talking the talk. Sometime in the near future we have to decide we want some folks running this country who know how to lay down plans for a sustainable planet. Blowing it to smithereens is not the answer. Somehow in the near future we are going to have to figure out a way to SHARE
the resources that are left on this planet and not bully every country out of what is rightfully theirs. It is time for us to grow up, act like adults and learn to get along with the rest of the world. It is going to take DIPLOMACY which we ain't got now!
annebell,it is not 'hate' rhetoric..it is just the truth..it is not my truth,it is anybody's truth and is all there for anyone who cares to find out,for themselves.americans have always been 'suckers' for "celebrities'it didnt take a karl rove to figure that one out.
Whitewatersally...spend as many words saying something positive about someone, anyone, as the negative things you spit out about Al Gore....Thanks.
annabelle,i understand your need for a 'hero'.believe it or not,you and i are on the same side, the side of compassion for people, the earth and all living things..but i did not'spit'that out..it is hard earned knowledge.peace.....
Gore was VP for 8 years. Name one thing he did then -- when he actually had some influence -- that could even remotely be called progressive. Oh, and, auctioning off the Lincoln Room to the highest bidder doesn't count.
OMG, what an awful idea. Gore lost 2000 because was such a loser and terrible campaigner. I know Gore has been Hollywoodized, but still. What an awful idea. Good idea if you want the GOP again.
