The Eerie Familiarity of These Preparations For War
Have we learnt nothing from the shameful and shameless run-up to the invasion of Iraq? Then, Mohammed ElBaradei, the Nobel prize-winning Egyptian head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, quietly but firmly said that as far as he and his UN agency were concerned, there was no evidence that Saddam Hussein had nuclear weapons or the materials to make them.
His conclusion was simply swept aside as the US and the British tore into the UN inspector, Hans Blix, determined to show that their worst warnings about Saddam were based on fact. ElBaradei and Blix proved right in their denial. Jack Straw and the hapless (in this case) Colin Powell were wrong.
So here we are, nearly five years later, and exactly the same is happening over Iran. Once again the UN process of inspection is in the firing line. Once again it is the figure of ElBaradei being roundly abused and told, more or less openly by the US and British, that his work is worthless, his opinions are of no consequence and that his proper place is sitting quietly by while the European Union and the UN Security Council got on with punishing Iran through sanctions.
And what has the poor man done to deserve this abuse? He had simply concluded that, while there was evidence that Iran had hidden some of its nuclear activities from the Agency, there was no firm evidence that it was in fact developing nuclear weapons or diverting materials from its civilian nuclear programme.
Without proof but with suspicion he preferred to use the negotiating tools provided by Iran's commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to press for intrusive inspection and to reach a new deal with Tehran to answer a series of specific questions over the autumn.
A gross abuse of his position, fulminated the Americans, British, French and Germans. He should have left it to the Security Council and the Europeans to pin the Iranians against the wall with a programme of financial and trade sanctions. All ElBaradei was achieving, they charged, was to allow Iran more time to procrastinate and confuse while they proceeded with producing weapons-grade material. If negotiations were to be pursued they were better done by the triumvirate of Britain-France-Germany and then with the maximum pressure of implied further action if Iran didn't give up its uranium enrichment.
To ram the message home, the new French foreign minister, Bernard Kouchner, this week talked openly about the prospect of "war" against Iran, earning the rebuke from Tehran that "using crisis-making words is against France's high historical and cultural position", a rebuff repeated by Sergey Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, when Kouchner visited Moscow on Tuesday. Moscow, he said, in front of his guest, was "very worried about the growing number of voices considering military action".
As well they might be, for, since Bush's speech earlier this month, the drumbeat of war has grown ever louder in the capitals of the West. Just as before the invasion of Iraq, the threats of military action are accompanied by assurances that negotiation is still the preferred route. Just as in 2003, claims are being made about Iran's threat to world peace without substantiation or proof. And just as was the case with Iraq, Iran is being presented with the option of humiliation or war.
It's not the way - as the Iranians say with typical teasing - for civilised societies to proceed and the Europeans should back away from it. At the moment there is an impasse. On the one side are those, including London and Washington, who believe that Iran is determined to get the bomb and must be stopped at all costs. On the other side are the Iranians who, for all their internal differences, regard the ability to enrich uranium and pursue nuclear technology at least for peaceful purposes as their right under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a matter of national pride. Between the two parties is now total distrust - the West of Iran's ultimate purposes and the Iranians of America's ultimate wish to force regime change on them.
Neither side seems in any mood to compromise. President Bush has upped the stakes by accusing Iran of fomenting the insurgency in Iraq and Afghanistan. Creating a foreign threat out of a country which has such little Congressional support or American public understanding as Iran is a convenient political tactic at this time in his unpopular presidency. Iran has equally little reason to rush to agreement. Quite aside from the nuclear issue, it is in its interests to await the next moves in Iraq and the next presidency in the US. In the meantime it suits President Ahmadinejad to divert public opinion from the deteriorating economic situation at home by raising the spectre of American assault.
The obvious, or "civilised", step at this point would be to use the offices of a neutral third party to test out the sincerity of the two positions, which is in a way exactly what the much maligned ElBaradei is doing. Whatever you think of Iranian good faith, it cannot be bad at this time to pose questions, seek inspections and involve them in dialogue. To dismiss the UN's specialist smacks of insincerity on our part.
But then that is exactly what happened in 2003 - we said that we really wanted diplomacy and then went ahead with a pre-determined war regardless of the UN, regardless of domestic and international opinion and regardless of the consequences.

Talk about terror !!!
The value of the dollar has gone South.
Now equal to Canadian $. When Bush took over Canadian $ was worth .65
Euro now $1.40 last year 1.26 2002 1.16
Saudi Arabia ready to unpeg US$ -
We are only dithering only long enough to allow rich to get their bucks out of our economy
Recession anyone? Followed by war.
I wonder how all those Dems are going to sleep at night after their failure to impeach Cheney and Bush - the only way to have stopped the upcoming nightmare that will never end.
Congress is not even being asked to rubberstamp this time.
The US threatens to actually use nuclear weapons to prevent a country questionably suspected of developing nuclear weapons from ever possibly using them?
Not to mention that the US is the only country ever to actually use nuclear weapons and another country having nuclear weapons seems to be the only deterrent to keeping the US at bay.
Yeah, we heard it all before but they plow right on along despite the mindboggling insanity of it all.
I don't think this is just an attack on Iran. I think the neocons are trying to shock this country into complete "privatization" (read: "theft"). Having the American economy implode would be just what the Chicago School of economics would call for to completely corporatize this country - it would be disaster capitalism on steroids. What a nightmare.
Do we Americans take our security seriously enough? For your consideration, I offer the following: Our leader, v. Pres. Cheney, has stated that if there's even a one percent threat of a "high impact" terrorist event, then the government should respond as if it were a certainty. As we move closer to an attack on Iran in order to stave off that one percent threat to our nation from abroad, I proffer a modest proposal to increase security from within our Homeland. For Homeland security, I would propose a more liberal-minded approach than Cheney's one percent threat. I believe we American's are strong enough to support double the threat: i.e. a two percent threat level from within. I believe the true beauty of my vision lies in the combination of two existing government functions: the Dept. of Homeland Security and the "No Child Left Behind" act. By merely adding psychological testing to the "No Child" legislation, we could nip emerging threats in the bud. If a child is deemed to have a two percent or greater chance of committing a future felony, the child could be treated now, before the potential threat emerges into rape, robbery, or worse. We could quite easily set up an assembly line process (and quite inexpensively) of electro-shock "to wipe the slate clean." Of course parents should also have the freedom to choose an alternative form of therapy from the "No Child Left" program, say with an annual payment to the government of about $50,000 (to demonstrate their sincerity), along with the promise of special attention for the child. In summary, I believe that with the coupling of the Cheney vision with my own, we Americans could lead lives relatively more free from fear and worry. I envision a docile, idyllic paradise of freedom. Long let freedom ring, o'er the land of the free and the home of the nearly brave.
Don't despair. Once you lose your spirit and your faith you start to sink in the ocean. America isn't gone. It may seem like it is though. When you look around you see your freedoms vanishing, politicians philandering, and so much corruption everywhere. Students are tasered now for asking the wrong questions and bigotry is raising its ugly head again in the South. The religious goose-steppers are hacking away at the freedoms of homosexuals, spreading Islamophobia, and attempting to wedge their beliefs into national law. Add in the war in Iraq and this wind of war blowing across Iran it seems like an unavoidable whirlpool of doom surrounds us all.
Where's America? I remember hot-dogs on the backyard grill, Bugs Bunny, school without cops, little league games without fights, sports without steroids, and heroes like Captain America and Superman. Where did it go? Some people say that it's "long gone". It may seem like it's gone but the real America we used to know is still here. It's like an old car sitting out behind the barn. It may not be running and it might have some rust on it but its all there. It's just waiting. It's waiting for the right person to bring it back to life. That is where our country is. It's all there waiting for a leader. It's sitting back behind the barn rusting slowly in the late summer sunlight. Even if it sits for years and years, the right person can bring it straight back in no time. I believe that we can win back our country, our self-respect, and our global integrity. I still believe in America. I hope you believe too. Keep the flag high and the colors bright and BELIEVE in the way it was and hope that it will be that way again. This country is OURS and will be what we make it.
We cons wont be satisfied until the USA is occupying ever oil field in the world
Relax everybody, there's really no urgency to our current situation. Just stop all this negative ranting! Really, our government has everything under control. Just as soon as we get our ID chips implanted we'll all be able to breathe a huge sigh of relief.
I mean, won't it be just great when we don't have to think AT ALL. Those who know, so much better than we, what's good for us will determine our every move every day. We'll have the familiar surroundings and security of our labor camp. We'll never have to worry about tomorrow. Our keepers will make sure that we know what's expected of us. We'll have a full twenty hours of satisfying production to look forward to every single day. No bills to pay. We won't have to wonder about what's for dinner or what to watch on TV. The Imperial Broadcast Network will only show what's best for us. No decisions to make. We'll never have to worry about affording a vacation or what kind of car to buy. We won't even have to worry about such foolish things as family or children. Breeding will be completely controlled by our sagacious Imperial Masters.
It'll be even better after one or two generations are born in the camps. By then all this nonsense about constitutions, civil liberties, rights, democracy and freedom will be completely forgotten. Our new history will be a saga of glory and victory against the evils of socialism and the peasants will know and be happy with their rightful place as subjects of their Imperial Lords.
We'll have glorious, everlasting war with the terrorists. There will be a place for everyone, everyone will know their place, and we will all know joyous fulfillment in service to our beloved masters.
Won't it be wonderful?

President Bush has upped the stakes by accusing Iran of fomenting the insurgency in Iraq and Afghanistan.
President Bush is desperately trying to accuse anyone and everyone of fomenting the insurgency in Iraq and Afghanistan because he knows he is the one responsible for it.
In the meantime it suits President Bush to divert public opinion from the deteriorating economic situation at home by raising the spectre of an American assault on Iran.
There, I fixed it for you.

Just thinking about the old car out in the autumn sun gives me the will to go on!
The more talk there is about the possible/probable attack on that "horrendous" nuclear (noo-qu-lar) enemy, it is becoming increasingly clear that the more inevitable defeat appears to be coming in 2008 for the neo-cons, the clearer the strategy for the future appears: More horror stories about the terrible threat that is posed by Iran to our freedom, and the more peril that is in store for democracy, the more evidence that is presented about Iran is arming insurgents all over the place, and spreading nuclear (noo-qu-lar) weapons to terrorist and jihadist groups, the more imperative it becomes for us to "nuke" them into oblivion - - ad there is only one group capable of doing this, and that just happens to be the Cheney/Bush regime and their cohorts - - so off to another war we go, and in such a case of "national emergency", we have to suspend the national elections in 2008 until all insurgency is quelled!
Suspending the elections makes no sense.
If they had the power to do something that extraordinary, why be so obvious about it?
Rather, they could still accomplish the same ends -- but far more subtly. Like co-opting the other party, so the Dems either produce an unwinnable candidate, one who is not allowed to win (with a little Diebold) magic, or one who is largely onboard with the master plan.
iran is not violating any laws pursuing its nuclear program.
doesn't that matter to anyone?
the author talks about concerns about the iranians "ultimate purpose" with their nuclear programs.
he talks about the concern of the "west"
firstly, the iranians have stated that the "ultimate purpose", if the author is wondering, for their program is energy, we have no reason to doubt that. once again, it is their right under international law to do what they are doing.
secondly, the west is not worried about this situation. this is an amercian grab for oil, leave the west out of it. you are alone on this one baby.
the coalition of the willing is really the coalition of the billing - long live the iraq oil bill.
exactly ! with the trillions of dollars they have wasted wasting lives.. we could have had the strongest infrastructure in the world, healthcare and education for all.true democracy is supposed to be a light unto the world-that others want to emulate.bush congress and senate, are nothing but nefarious nabobs, intent on filling their own coffers, thru the coffins of others...
ps..not to belittle the jena situation, but in comparison to bush starting the next world war with iran.........well i wish sharpton, jackson and the gang would put that kind of energy into stopping the insanebushdevil from unleashing armagaddeon.
curmudgeon99,
The Democrats will sleep just fine. Remember Nancy Pelosi removed any language that would stop Bush from bombing Iran. Additonally, the Senate voted 97-0 in favor of tougher sanctions on Iran. The Democrats are complicit in that they are enabling Bush to move forward with bombing Iran.
"Where's America? I remember hot-dogs on the backyard grill, Bugs Bunny, school without cops, little league games without fights, sports without steroids, and heroes like Captain America and Superman. Where did it go?"
It didn't go anywhere, yet. Oh, the 'ship' is definitely sinking. What you see now is pretty much as it has been... the pretty mask has been ripped off and the real Amerikkka SHOLE IS UGLY.
As we all know a concept like 'terrorism' is very hard to attack.
How does one get a nuclear missile inside anyone's head.
But a country has a large, encompassing, definite, physical dimension to it, like Iran, and all its oil, which, in a way, is very terrorizing.
When the author of the article asks "Haven't we learned anything?" after the last aggression, it brings to mind our Leader's "Fool me once, ...fool me twice, my bad" comment. If we let these bloody criminals act in our name to widen their war we will deserve the horrendous consequences. As someone says above, the only way to stop them is impeachment, before it is too late. Unfortunately, the cowardly dems are doormats. Witness the condemnation of MoveOn by the Senate.
Bushie Boy & five deferment dickwad will talk about attacking Iran over winter and spring solstice and do it in late summer just, just
JUST BEFORE '08 to STEAL YET ANOTHER ELECTION.
Why do you think KKKarl resigned at the most correct moment? To confuse the sheeple.
DUH???
I think it's very possible that the American people are going to have to come face to face with the cold hard reality of the situation before January 2009. Bush/Cheney are going to have to be removed from office for the good of the country. These are dangerous people who are going to destroy us if we aren't careful. All we need is another war in the middle east. We are going to become in the eyes of the world the new age Hitler's. Because we have become a dangerous to world peace. The people who are running us are sick! When I say sick I mean insane. I don't think they are in full possession of all of their facilities. It's pure insanity to start another war in the middle east for any reason. We are in two wars now there is no end to and no graceful way out of. Hitting Iran is going to plunge the world into another world war with us as the bad guys in the story. It was bad enough when they started wars with Afghanistan and Iraq both. But, starting one with Iran regardless of whether they are trying to get nuclear weapons or not is going to be pure insanity. My husband thinks they are some of those 'End of timer's' who are trying to bring on Armageddon. But, I don't think most are that religious. They have let their power go to their heads and can not cope with any large amount of power without going off the deep end. Iran is going to be the deep end of the pool we are going to drown in.
'heroes like Captain America and Superman. Where did it go?'
Captain America is dead, was assasinated when he 'rebelled' against the government.
why is it that the only cadidate talking of peace is D.K. W.T.F. is wrong with america? all this power, is like some kind of bad drug. this is sick.
