Whose Betrayal?
Betrayal is everywhere in the news. We learned from the Washington Post that Alan Greenspan said, in his new book, "I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil." Not keeping our country safe, as the troops were told. Not democracy. Not Weapons of Mass Destruction. Not al Qaeda. Oil! All those lives and maimings about oil! Are you shocked, shocked? It is Betrayal of Trust of the highest order: "Politically inconvenient ... everyone knows..." Oil was not discussed at the Petraeus hearings. The silence in Washington has been polite.
MoveOn's "General Betray Us?" ad has raised vital questions that need a thorough and open discussion. The ad worked brilliantly to reveal, via its framing, an essential but previously hidden truth: the Bush Administration and its active supporters have betrayed the trust of the troops and the American people.
MoveOn hit a nerve. In the face of truth, the right-wing has been forced to change the subject -- away from the administration's betrayal of trust and the escalating tragedy of the occupation to of all things, an ad! To take the focus off maiming and death and the breaking of our military, they talk about etiquette. The truth has reduced them to whining: MoveOn was impolite. Rather than face the truth, they use character assassination against an organization whose three million members stand for the highest patriotic principles of this country, the first of which is a commitment to truth.
New York Times columnist Frank Rich, right about so many things, got it wrong when he criticized the ad in his Sunday column.
He overlooks the fact that the "distraction" he worries about has led the supporters of the Iraq occupation to endlessly evoke the Betrayal of Trust frame, identifying themselves with the Betrayer of Trust in that frame. The betrayers themselves took MoveOn's bait.
Thanks to their making it a national issue, we can now proceed to discuss their Betrayal of Trust on the national stage they have conveniently provided. The importance of this frame is discussed in "Betrayal of Trust: Beyond Lying" - Chapter 6 of Don't Think of an Elephant!
Betrayal is a moral issue, and with respect to war, mass destruction, maiming, and death, it is a moral issue of the highest order. Betraying trust is a matter of deception that knowingly leads to significant harm. There is little doubt that the Iraq War and its aftermath have done considerable harm - to our troops, to the Iraqi people, and to our nation as whole. It is equally clear that there has been a considerable amount of deception in the instigation of the war and throughout the occupation. In short, there has been, and continues to be, a considerable betrayal of trust. It goes well beyond the general and the fudging of his figures.
The issue is this: Who has been betraying the trust of the American people -- including our troops -- in bringing about the American invasion of Iraq and in continuing the occupation? What were the acts of betrayal and with what consequences? And is a betrayal of trust still going on, and if so where, how, and by whom?
I have developed a deeper look at these issues. You can read that in my new article Iraq and the Betrayal of Trust . But meanwhile, let's talk about one of the traps we should stay out of: The Politeness Trap.
Bush took advantage of certain conventions of etiquette and politeness when he sent Petraeus to testify before Congress. Those conventions hold that one does not criticize the symbolic stand-in for the military, even when the uniform-wearing stand-in is on an overt political mission that is at the heart of the Administration's continuing betrayal of trust. Decorum can be put to political use, and Bush did just that.
Bush was using a familiar right-wing tactic: identifying himself with a military uniform and the stature of the military in general, when he had no military stature himself. Rudy Guiliani used the same tactic in his ad in Friday's New York Times: by associating himself with Petraeus' rank and role, hoping some of the stature of the military would rub off on him. The implicit message is an attack on MoveOn: in pointing out Petraeus' deception, MoveOn, so Giuliani implies, was being disrespectful of the military itself. This is a typical right-wing attack on progressives, and progressives shouldn't stand for it. They should not be allowed to hide behind the troops. The troops themselves have been betrayed. None of us wants to hear it, to know it, to acknowledge it. Least of all me. It disgusts me how the troops have been betrayed by people saying, "Support our troops." But it is true, and millions of us must start saying so. There are unacknowledged villains behind this carnage.
In a country that takes its freedoms seriously, freedom of speech must be maintained. Betrayal through deception is much worse than being impolite. Where tens of thousands of deaths and maimings are concerned, it is immoral not to point out betrayals when they are real. It is patriotic to root out betrayal on grand scale wherever it occurs.
The American people have been betrayed by the architects and apologists for the invasion and occupation of Iraq. By avoiding the politeness trap in a patriotic, direct, and factual way, MoveOn correctly framed the betrayal of trust for what it is. And right now, the apologists for the occupation seem to be forgetting a lesson we thought Frank Luntz had schooled them on. They are quite busy invoking the frame of betrayal of trust, a frame that clearly best fits them. That frame is essential to bringing an end to the tragedy in Iraq.

Show AllI found it to be interesting that Greenspan does not consider war for oil to be wrong. I saw him on CNN this morning, and he did not apologize for the administration's invasion. In fact, he strongly indicated that it was "necessary" to topple Saddam and secure the oil for economic reasons.
Greenspan has attempted to distance himself from the Bush cabal, but he has not condemned the use of war to advance U.S. economic interests. It seems that he is afraid history will be as unkind to him as it will to the rest of the current powermongers. He has also claimed ignorance about the housing boom and bust, which seems highly unlikely for a man who was so immersed in the economic state of the world. I always had bad feelings about this guy, and from what I've heard about his new book, I was right. I believe history will expose him for his corrupt role in the destruction of the middle class and the advance of American imperialism.
The Dems are clueless. No one on their side should criticize the ad. Its true!
The Petraeus report is a massive lie. There is no success anywhere and in fact Iraq is a disaster on every measure.
Go read the truth over at gregpalast.com
Even Anbar province is a disaster; and the Dems should know this. They should have been all over the General, but only Boxer looked half way decent in her questioning.
"If we get this next phase wrong — no matter how you feel about how we got to where we are, the consequences of getting this wrong for Iraq, for the region, for us are enormous."
So says DefSec Gates - blind to the fact that they have not gotten a single "phase" right, yet. (Except for the elections stealing phase and the Constitution destroying phase and the transference of our Treasury to the already rich phase.)
Sec. Gates, why should we trust you? "I would confess I'm no expert on Iraq." Okay then...
Betrayal is a good framing term.
Let us drop with the niceties even further and substitute "betrayal" with "TREASON", for that is what it truly is. Betrayal makes it sound like a lover's dalliance or a friend letting slip your secret. This is much more heinous, this is TREASON!
Lakoof's contribution to raising people's awareness of the importance of framing is useful I suppose for Democrats to tactically fight the Republicans, but what bothers me is that, in the end, he is for the status quo: a coordinator class ruling over the working class.
I don't think I have ever seen him address this issue. And how Lakoff operates for his party, an authority on how the mind works, is a prototypical example of a manager-type of the coordinator class lording over others.
Of course Lakoff is highly recognized in his field and I like most of what he says, but that Democrats need a leading authority on cognitive linguistics to give them advice to recognize seemingly obvious concepts such as framing, says that this party is not really democratic but authoritarian.
The appropriate frame for regarding Lakoff's work for the Democrats is that regarding class issues. The Democrats will only listen to those of the wealthy coordinating class - its very problem.
Liars theives and mass murders - is that polite enough for you? I forgot war profiteering scum.
Since when did Americans get so polite, anyway? One of the things I've always admired about Americans is their straighforwardness -- something most of us Canadians lack. You always know where you stand with an American. No pussyfooting.
But something terrible has happened over the last few years. Suddenly, the whole left side of the American political spectrum has got politeness disease. They let the Right say the most outrageous things while at the same time complaining about utterances from the Left as "outrageous"!
Since most Americans cultivate outspokenness, is it any wonder the Dems do so badly in elections? The Dems can't even win themselves a decent-sized majority because many Americans just can't bring themselves to vote for such mealy-mouthed mamby-pambies.
Wake up, Dems, and act like Americans!
Gen. Betray us circumvented the truth -- yea, he lied. Republicans are pointing fingers from dirty, bloody hands, and acting as if they are taking the high road, which from their vantage point of the gutter doesn't even rank at street-level.
But what about the Republicrats? Now, they ought to be ashamed of trying to pull everybody down to their subservient level, where they are shivering on their knees. It's difficult to bow down to the bottom feeders.
Petraeus aka Betrayus should be reccomended for a dishonorable discharge. Bushieboy already has one from the Texas Air National Guard.
I have been pushing this idea in hopes that it will gain traction. As an american it sems that concerned individuals seem to have little effect in bringing about change. Many individuals of character (Cindy Sheehan/Nader) and many groups (ACLU/Anti-War movement) can not penetrate the blanket of dollars that corporations use to suppress meaningful change and more importantly even let fellow american understand how many americans do NOT approve of the direction, ethics and policy of this once great nation.
I suggest that a a coalition of ALL groups (Immigration/Anti-War/Anti-globalization Healthcare/Free Speech/Free Press- and just concerned Americans in general) combine and simultaneously withdraw an average of 10,000 dollars out of the banking/brokerage section of this country for sa one week. If a combined group of 10,000,000 people withdrew an average of $10,000 dollars - we would effectively have removed 100 billion in cash - but due to fractional reserve banking as much as 10 TRILLION dollars out of the economy.
OUR MONEY - they use to finance deadbeat corporations (such as Enron and worldcomm amongst many other corupt anti-american people corporations) -not to mention the governement who would rather show 50 people protesting in Burma a dozen times in a day - but not the 100,000 in Washington DC on September 15th or the one million in NYC during the Republican National Convention - as well as countless other examples. They are using OUR MONEY as collateral to do harm to US.
If -it is possible to combine our goals into one goal - which is to let these corporations/governmets KNOW that we KNOW - they are sing OUR MONEY to finance a WAR against US - and we will move it to Switzerland or some other country - just like they outsource oor jobs - we could single handly achieve the greatest worldwide non-violent most effective protest in the history on mankind.
We already know - that Mexico's biggest foreing exchange generator is immigrants sending money back home - more than oil!! - Imagine the message we would be able to send to all oppressed people everywhere - if we could successfully withdraw upto 10 trillion dollars in funds from the worlds largest economy !! All of a sudden the contempt from our congressman, senators, police, banks, corporations and brokerage houses would shrivel to the size of a raisin in the sun.
What do you guys think!1 I see no other way for americans to restore their voice in thie governance of our country - with out getting arrested/fired/balcklisted ad nauseum!!!!!
Kristina40.... you took the words right out of my Mouth. Cheat on your Wife, that's Adultry.
Cheat on your Country, that's TREASON ! I agree with the author (sortof), but even He is way too damn nice ! Betrayal of Trust Politically at the highest echelons of Power is flat out TREASON. And that, is a Capital Offence ! Hang the Bastards...every one of them - Mass Murderers.

Sounds like a winner to me.
But the problem is that those of us of the anti-war, liberal, progressive stripe, except for those who have fame and fortune from books and professorships and what-nots, frequently are the ones who don't have a cool $10,000 lying around in a bank account. I know I don't.
However, I have been known to be absolutely wrong, and maybe I am on this.
Yes, money talks loudly and if what you propose, iyamwutiam [why no "y" in the last iam/iyam?] could be carried off, wall street would rock along with the banking systems.
You're right. It's our money that pays for this treachery and horror. And withdrawing ten grand, 10 million strong ... or how bout $5,000 ... 20 million strong?
What do the rest of you think???
The Republican warmongers were not too worried about etiquette when they turned two war heroes, Cleland and Kerry, into traitors to accomplish their own rotten election takover. Of course, Kerry was dumb enough to say Move On`s article was over the top and not appropriate!! Wake up, Democrats, and quit acting like a bunch of scared wimps. It is no wonder we have this kind of situation if Dems refuse to call a spsde a spade and fight fire with fire. If all they can worry about is their own re-election then they do not deserve to be in Congress. The Republican agenda stinks, but you have to admire the success of their tactics, and their cohesiveness.
The ad was not well recieved here in the reddest, red area of a red state. There was an entire section of editorials in our rag of a paper this morning devoted to slamming it and singing the praises of Petraus. One had the gall to call him the finest general of our time. I guess the fact that his OWN superior, Admiral Fallon called him a "chickenshit little brown noser" doesn't count...The Dems were getting bashed for not denouncing the ad loud enough so go figure. The people in this area have a collective IQ of about 83 though so I have hope that other parts of the Country are not quite as "handicapped" as these people are.
The great betrayal of our time is by our elected officials and the victims are the citizens of the US, and the dead foreigners and soldiers.
The will of the people is treated as a humming annoyance, like the mosquito you can't quite splatter. This is captured by Cheney's response to any question about what the public thinks, "I don't pay attention to the polls, polls are fickle." Translation -- I don't believe in democracy as a system of government.
The great sin of MoveOn.org is in the audacity of imagining that the public has any role other than to digest what is presented as beyond rapproach.
At every turn, they say "trust us." Any time anyone invigorates a public discussion of policy in the democratic tradition, it is treated as treasonous.
In an authoritarian empire, public discussion of policy is treasonous. Perhaps these people think we are currently living in an authoritarian regime controlled by an office of the unitary executive rather than a democracy?
Maybe they are right.
Cleland and Kerry were "war heroes"? I think someone needs his/her mind washed again.
As for the main architects of betrayal, the american people need only look in the mirror for it is they who are the true authors of their own demise. That's the Truth so many are unable to handle.
To iyamwutiam: I like it!!!!!!!!!!!!
We are all being much too kind to ANY in Congress who supported this war. They all had the facts, should have, should have known how to get them or should have had the guts to say NOT ON MY WATCH until we try ALL other alternatives to the worst alternative... war.
If those in Congress do not know BY NOW that ANYTHING they propose in legislation is POINTLESS because of the unlimited, reckless and silent use of the current occupant's SIGNING STATEMENTS, then they all should be removed from office. It either proves they are a part of the conspiracy to keep the people they supposedly represent OUT of the decision making process [ as in the case of Mitch McConnell ], they do not know or understand what is going on in their very presence, OR they are too damned scared of their big money contributors to do anything but make excuses and play blame games on others.
ALL in Congress CERTAINLY KNOW there is no way out of the mess they helped and allowed happen in Iraq, EXCEPT to HOLD ACCOUNTABLE this administration by IMPEACHMENT of the top two officials.
Until the real [or shall we say "worst"] criminals are removed from the Executive Branch, we all face the possiblities of another declared war. OR more likely, support of Israel's proxy war on Iran with our "three navy fleet" armada in the Mediterranean backing them up so no other nations dare retalliate.
Marshall Law easily follows back here in the good old U.S. with a president who has been given all the war powers he needs by a compliant Congress, to do whatever he pleases to either stay in office until "victory" or "success" is achieved or appoint a trusted successor. We have never been closer to a police state in the history of this nation.
This for iamwhatiam and others:
What, exactly, makes you think the Swiss, who make their living off of nothing more than holding (literally speaking) anybody´s illicit gains for their own private profit & no questions asked, an option for constructive and positive change to the criminal state of affairs of our Union or for the safe and legitimate development of the planet and the species?
Those who control the Swiss are part and parcel to the ongoing crimes being committed daily by the members of the global criminal corporate cartel.
Get with the program & stay focused on the primary enemy to human brotherhood. Prostitute politicians for hire abound in every single western society as well as those others who attempt to emulate barbarian criminality instead of supporting their own peoples...
If you really want to make some waves, send your deposits to The Islamic Bank. Or perhaps the Iranian State Bank. Or perhaps the Venezuelan State Bank, etc.
Get the drift?
The concept is excellent, however, your operational plan is sadly flawed.
Before I forget, I suspect that many of you really DO need to wake up and smell the coffee!
There is no difference between the two fake parties in the US, and as long as you continue to believe such tripe, your days are numbered.
You know, Lagoof's work on the Democratic Party being the "nurturing parent" party really is going down the tubes as Pelosi is unable and seemingly unwilling to stop the funding to the war in Iraq. Now, Lagoof just seems like a hired con man. Give up George - both parties are the "strong father" type - despite your spin.
