The Toilet and The Senator
The party may simply be suffering from PCSS (post coital stress syndrome). Enough, it may be thinking, is enough, which given several of its members' recent moral lapses, it clearly is. On the other hand, it might be that being the party of family values it believes more opprobrium attaches to one type of indiscretion than to the other.
The juxtaposition (not a sexual term) of David Vitter and Larry Craig is coincidence. David Vitter is the United States Senator from Louisiana who went from private life to the House of Representatives and from there to the United States Senate. One of the stepping-stones on his path to the House was Bob Livingston, formerly one of the most powerful members of the House. In 1998 Mr. Livingston was slated to become the Speaker of the House when, in the midst of clamoring for Bill Clinton's resignation and impeachment, he learned his own sexual indiscretions were about to become public. Confronted with embarrassing disclosures he resigned from the House thus paving the way for Mr. Vitter.
Upon becoming a member of the House of Representatives, Mr. Vitter donned the slightly soiled robe of virtue left behind by Mr. Livingston and became a prominent member of the House and subsequently the United States Senate. In July 2007 it was disclosed that the client book of a Washington Madame included among its clients, one of family values' lead trumpeters, David Vitter. Mr. Vitter acknowledged his involvement and said: "This was a very serious sin in my past for which I am, of course, completely responsible." He then went on to explain that he had asked for and received forgiveness from God and his wife (presumably in that order) and offered his "deep and sincere apologies to all I have disappointed and let down in any way."
The next day it was reported in New Orleans' Times Picayune that Mr. Vitter's extra marital lust was not geographically limited and that he also frequented a house of prostitution in New Orleans. The proprietor of the establishment, Jeanette Maier, said he had been a client of the Canal Street brothel. Although his conduct, even though an historical rather than a current event, was a disappointment to those who wear family values like a suit of clothes, there were no calls for Mr. Vitter to step down from anything. That may have been because (a) his disclosed indiscretions preceded his advent to the senate, (b) had he been removed a democratic governor would have appointed his successor or© heterosexual transgressions are not as offensive to Republicans as the other kind and only rarely attract criminal charges, they being perceived as more natural than the other kind and harder to initiate in a men's room in an airport. And that brings us to the most recent affliction visited upon the Republican Party by the Lord.
While in the Minneapolis airport Senator Larry Craig of Idaho entered a bathroom stall and seated in the stall next to him was a law enforcement officer whose task for the day was to determine if people entering adjacent stalls were homosexual. (Although some might think a law enforcement officer would have better things to do than spend a day seated on a toilet in an airport restroom, they fail to understand what a threat the homosexual way of life is to the non-homosexual.)
While seated in the stall next to the federal officer, Mr. Craig did some things that are highly offensive to those who promote family values. He tapped his foot, he may or may not have reached down to pick up a piece of paper and at one point he extended his hand underneath the divider three times, palm up although it is not clear whether it was his left or right hand. He insisted it was his right hand but the arresting officer insisted it was the left hand since it had a ring on the finger. Mr. Craig ultimately pled guilty to the misdemeanor of disorderly conduct.
When this information became public there was an immediate reaction. Senator John McCain said anyone who pleads guilty to a crime (even if only a misdemeanor apparently) should not serve in the Senate. If Mr. McCain actually believes that political claptrap, he should resign from the Senate. Senator Norm Coleman of Minnesota said Mr. Craig's conduct was unbecoming a senator and Mitch McConnell, Senate Republican leader said his conduct was "unforgivable." Whether they were referring to the foot tapping or extending the hand beneath the stall divider was unclear.
Senator Vitter continues to serve in the senate. Senator Craig may resign from that body. He should not. His continuing service as a senator would prove that occasionally the hypocrites in Congress, though in the majority, nonetheless come out second best.

Show AllCraig's actions were classic homosexual behavior. The
Mormon church does not abide "homosexual behavior". He will never admit to this, even though he is guilty as hell. (I get my facts from "everything you wanted to know about sex, but were afraid to ask") a book I read at 11 years old. (I was much more inquisitive back then.) (and yes, I was reared in that mormon hell.) Is this OK? ENGLISH TEACHER?????
I don't believe that senator Craig is gay, nor is he guilty of anything other than nuerotic behavior. The actions described by the arresting officer in this case indicate the possiblity that Senator Craig has a compulsion to engage in sex acts and it's my view that anyone of either gender who might be similarly inclined or afflicted would do. It just happens that certain public toilets are handy, and those persons with "the compulsion" seek just that: a location that's handy and convienent for a quick release with an anonymous partner. Isn't that what whorehouses are all about? Men don't frequent brothels or pick-up "street girls" for romance or shared intimacy after all.
If public toilets were shared by both genders Senator Craig may well have tapped away in much the same way had a women's feet appeared in the next stall. Perhaps that's one reason why we seperate the sexes when it comes to using public toilets.
So all this chatter in the media, and here, about Senator Craig being a gay man in the closet misinterprets the motivation behind his actions and misrepresents "gay behavior."
"Although some might think a law enforcement officer would have better things to do than spend a day seated on a toilet in an airport restroom, they fail to understand what a threat the homosexual way of life is to the non-homosexual"
For the FAVscists -- Family Values Fascists -- the very existence, much less the public expression of same-sex attachments, whether the most casual or the most lasting, is an assault on the foundation of society; it follows from their belief that gay couples enjoying civil liberties & protections is FAR WORSE than all conceivable 'terrorism'.
I'm certainly prepared to accept the possibility that Senator Craig merely suffers from Persistent Binymphomania Disorder (PBD), if such a condition is to be found in the literature of psychology.
He's just mad, then, not bad-- or gay, which many regard as the same thing. Thus honor is saved.
His public ambivalence about resigning is hardly a testimonial to his overall sanity and rationality, that's for sure.
"Ambivalence" is the word!
All that aside, the fact all of us should fear is this: footsie is illegal. No reports have Craig overtly soliciting sex, gay or otherwise, for money (which shouldn't be illegal in a free country anyway.) Disorderly conduct used to mean getting drunk and starting a brawl, lying down in an intersection to protest an illegal invasion, or maybe holding a sign up in the Senate well.
Is it also disorderly conduct for a woman to play footsie in a bathroom stall? On "Seinfeld," when Elaine begged for just one square, was that a secret proposition for lesbian sex for which she should have been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct? If I meet a girl in a club and I say, "Come on, I'll buy ya dinner and then we'll go have some fun at my place," have I just attempted to solicit sex in exchange for food?
Is it legal to yell "gay sex" in a crowded movie theater?
Sen Craig may have been a nuisance but he was not engaging in sex in the airport. His votes and support have cost lives in Iraq. He represents backwards values so in a way this case is about the man getting his just due. As much as I hate his politics, I think for him to resign is a mistake. He is just caving into more hypocrisy as if our other senators or congresspeople are paragons of moral virtue. What is kind of disturbing about this case is that Craig seems to have been arrested for his thought about what he might want to do not for what he actually did. Now Sen Vitter apparently didn't just think but did it. Thinking and doing something are two different things but the fascist police state mentality would no doubt love to go after thoughts.
the dude did cop a plea!!
'n have no pity
no doubt he will be the next
governor of south idaho..
ken
What needs to be factored in here is that who knows what the intentions of Craig were ? Could be taken to an extreme that he wanted sex or wanted to try it who knows ? Hopefully it was not get a man by himself and kill him. Here in the Twin Cities we have had some mighty strange killings for sex ( see Howard Porter case May 18, 2007 ). Ofcourse if Idaho had a gov who was not a Public Can there would be no kicking out a fellow party member. Bottom line... any member of the family vaule party who has not been divorced can run for prez.....oh oh there goes Rudy.
At the time of the arrest:
['Cubicle' Policeman to 'Closet' Craig] ...
"Were you soliciting me? C'mon now, answer the question and quit stalling will yu?" ,,,
Like frank and others are pointing out, the REAL ISSUE here is how and why he was arrested.
Who gives a flying fuck whether he was soliciting gay sex or not??? Are we nothing more than a country of little children. Mommy, the big bad gay man tapped his foot next to mine, call the police. I have been approached by gay men who asked if I would like to go out with them and I thanked them for the compliment, and declined the offer. End of story. Americans are a bunch of sick little children.
Yes, it matters if he is gay with regard to his record and 'stance' as a senator, but that has NOTHING to do with his arrest nor the methods used. Let's remember that the tactics used in and the message given by his arrest are purely Big Brother!!! That is what everyone should be outraged about.
It is interesting, I posted a similar post in another thread several days ago on CD, with regard to Craig, and everyone continued to blab on about his gayness, his just-desserts, etc.
But, I guess this is what is to be expected in a country where people are so ashamed of their bodies that you can't even have nude beaches or sex education in school. What an immature society this is!!!
Just like when Bill Clinton was having his little sexcapade in the whitehouse, is this dummy playing his toilet games really that important, considering what bigger things we need to be tending to? The radical Repubs should be pretty worked up over it, however, since they spent a couple years making Clintons sex life the worst thing the country has ever been through, and it was heterosexual, which is not supposed to be as bad according to them. Why is it that Repubs seem to be preoccupied with some kind of sex business all the time?
Kernel,
Because one of the primary effects of Religion is to teach people to deny what is natural. There are two primary things that the Church teaches people to deny in order to gain control. The first and biggest is to teach you that you do not have 'the kingdom of heaven inside', but rather that you need a priest. The second is to teach you that what is natural is unnatural. The sexual energy, the kundalini energy, is also the spiritual energy. Religion seeks to rob us of both.
Any of you that can excuse his behavior are ignorant or also sick.
We have all had occasion to use a public toilet and we normal people can tell you that we do not ever engage in that kind of behavior. I don't even want to interact with the hardware much less another unknown, strager human being. SICKO
It is sick, he is sick and has not place as a moral hypocrite.
Public toilets are sick and avoided by people, used only because we have to and the last thing a person would do is what he did.
SICK PERVERT he is period.
Dillan;
Mommy, mommy, the big bad "sick" gay man tapped his foot next to mine, call the police!!!
Yes, Dillan has "issues" but he also has a point: we live in an age where STD's kill you. Here's a guy who wants to engage in sex with a stranger in a public bathroom, and he leads our country. No wonder he voted for war.
Why is no one mentioning the two minutes that Craig spent peering into the stall occupied by the cop? Collective amnesia? Also, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge... SEVEN weeks later. It wasn't a rash or hurried decision by any means.
Craig's extremely poor judgment makes him unfit to remain in the Senate. Nevermind that he's a nasty, bad, naughty boy who touted "family values" ad infinitum.
Craig is not Mormon. He lists his religion as Methodist.
Here in the UK in the mid 1990's, the Conservative party tried the slogan "Back to Basics", which was rather vague, but basically against sex. As a result the newspapers uncovered a string of Conservative sex scandals. The good news is that they have never been in power since! (However, some would say that 'New Labour' was really a Conservative government in disguise.)
BTW, I think it is reasonable to forbid touting for sex in a public toilet - this can be embarrassing for ordinary users. In Britain we have openly gay government ministers, but it is still illegal to use public toilets in this way.
whateveryousay:
Needing to crap when you are far from home is also a powerful natural motivaton. Hope that the church doesn't remove public potties in order to discipline the flying public.
true, anythings possible...
Whateveryousay: "What an immature society this is!!!"
~ Yup, and, - I feel that this 'immaturity' lays at the root of many of the problems the USA is currently experiencing.
The US is still a very young country, I see it in effect, as a teenager, and like most teenagers it has inner complexities, which will, in the fullness of time, get ironed out.
But for the moment, it needs to curb it's propensity towards 'know-it-all' arrogance, and the *impulsiveness* of immaturity.
Among my students I have always found the arrogant ones the hardest to teach, -they already 'know everything' and therefore can't / won't LISTEN to sound advice.
The USA needs help with it's poor listening skills, then it will more comfortably sit in amongst the family of nations which comprise human societies across the planet. - Indeed, in due course, it one day has a very real place in leadership, but that can only come about when the current hubris has given way to the more adult responses of *humility* and a willingness to *listen* and to *LEARN*.
~ 'Come the day' I say!
With the advent of the internet, we are truly living in the age of Big Brother. In a frenzy to catch pedophiles, for example, they have undercover agents monitoring adult chatrooms and enticing men to come to them and play. I have no sympathy for those who actually do, but when will it progress to arresting people for fantasy play (role-playing)? And will we start arresting people for angry political rants as well, or if they sympathize with the causes of the oppressed? As far as the senator is concerned, he is despicable because of his hypocrisy, not because he committed any crime. His behavior was at worst eccentric, but not criminal.
> they fail to understand what a threat the homosexual way of life is to the non-homosexual"
This was not a homosexual bashing. For the record....the cop was in the public bathroom looking for people engaging in public sex. It being in a busy airport, it wasn't even a discreet bathroom. How'd you like your 10 year old to see that?
Taxi zum Klo
If Senator Craig supported Iraq war, he is a co-criminal and should resign or be thrown out and tried just on those grounds. What he did in the shithouse is irrelevant.
WHATEVER YOU SAY: Good points about expunging the natural from human behavior. Dr. Alberto Villoldo, Rajneesh and Wilhelm Reich can and do explain why this is so and what purposes the device serves.
Not quite true that nobody has asked Vitter to resign. I called his office and said that if Craig has to, then Vitter ought to also. I suggest others call his office too.
The difference between Vitter and Craig is that Vitter was not caught in any compromising situation. All he is guilty of is that his phone number appeared in the Washington madam's phonebook. He admitted he had at some time in the past "sinned", whatever that means, but admitted to nothing specific or illegal. The hearsay evidence that was gleaned stated that Vitter was a fetishist who liked to be diapered (by the hookers). It is debatable that a sexual act could be accomplished clothed that way.
Craig in the other hand was caught by a police officer while violating a valid statute. Whether or not this statute is Constitutional or not has never been tested in the courts. Craig pleaded guilty to a lesser charge. The fact that he pleaded guilty means he accepted a conviction - that he admitted guilt as charged.
They are both disgusting hypocrites! Not necessarily for the sex acts they wanted, but because of the hypocrisy in spewing their "family values" crap while living their lives oppositely.
I think they should both retain their Senate seats as it will make great political fodder when they run for reelection.
One thing that is not clear to me in terms of the law is: how is this different from someone trying to pickup someone at a bar (we all know that some bars have the reputation of being pickup bars)? I guess that since the restroom is a public one, an undercover cop can pretend to be a john/jane and arrest someone for making a "move". Can an undercover cop do the same in a bar? Of course, I am not talking about the situation where money is involved but the case where two consenting adults ask each other for a sexual encounter.
If you look at the penal code for disorderly conduct or public disturbance there are provisions for conduct at public restrooms. There are also provisions for prostitution, being drunk or intoxicated and a few other things.
All Republicans are perverts. After all, they've been trying to f**k us up the ass for at least the last 20 years.
