Climate Activists Target Asia-Pacific Summit in Australia
SYDNEY - Climate change activists staged a break-in at an Australian power station Monday as a pattern of guerrilla-style raids emerged ahead of a summit of Asia-Pacific leaders in Sydney.
The protest came as already draconian security measures were boosted a day ahead of the arrival in Sydney of US President George W. Bush, who was expected to be greeted with a flurry of angry protests.
Four environmental activists chained themselves to a coal-carrying conveyor belt at the Loy Yang power station in the southeastern state of Victoria, just a day after a coal ship was targeted in a port near Sydney.
The power station, which provides nearly a third of Victoria's electricity, reduced output for five hours before three men and a woman were cut free by police and arrested, a spokesman said.
A spokeswoman for the activists, Michaela Stubbs, said several more protests were planned against the fossil fuel industry to highlight the need to reduce emissions of the greenhouse gases blamed for global warming.
The demonstrations were designed to send a message to the 21 leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum meeting in Sydney this week, she told national radio.
"We need to see real action now. Their non-committal, aspirational targets are completely inadequate to stop dangerous climate change," she said.
Global warming is high on the summit agenda, but host Prime Minister John Howard has revealed no attempt will be made to set binding targets for the reduction of greenhouse gases.
Instead, APEC will likely agree on a long-term "aspirational" goal of cutting emissions to replace the main international treaty on climate change, the Kyoto Protocol, when it expires in 2012.
APEC includes the world's three biggest polluters, the United States, China and Russia, while Australia is a major coal exporter.
On Sunday, 12 Greenpeace protesters were arrested and charged after they rode inflatable dinghies out to a ship carrying coal in the port of Newcastle, north of Sydney, and painted an anti-APEC slogan on its hull.
The Australian government has warned of tough action against protesters, and officials Monday defended jittery police who forced three German tourists to delete photographs of a huge security fence erected in Sydney for the summit.
The police action may have been "over the top" but was necessary because demonstrators were reportedly looking for weak points in the fence which they could attack, said New South Wales state Transport Minister John Watkins.
Around 3,500 police, backed by 1,500 counter-terrorism and special forces soldiers, began enforcing a city centre exclusion zone marked by the fence in a security crackdown criticised as excessive by civil libertarians.
Major traffic snarls were predicted as the security crackdown intensifies to cope with the first major anti-US protest scheduled to take place just hours before Bush flies into the harbourside city.
As locals express growing frustration over the fortification of Sydney, Howard blamed the tight security on expected violent protests.
"It's not the fault of the American president, or the Chinese president or the Russian president, it's not the fault of the government. It's the fault of people who threaten violence," he told reporters.
Bush is due in Sydney on Tuesday for a state visit ahead of the summit, and an anti-war group called the Stop Bush Coalition has planned major demonstrations against his presence.
"We are the ones protesting about the violence -- the actual real life violence that is happening today is happening in Iraq. And George Bush and John Howard are responsible for that," said coalition spokesman Alex Bainbridge.
Also on the summit agenda is trade, with APEC leaders set to press for a revival of deadlocked world trade talks by the end of this year, according to a draft statement.
They will urge crucial concessions from the major players in the Doha round of World Trade Organisation (WTO) talks on breaking down global trade barriers, another issue targeted by the protesters.
"Most of these people are demonstrating broadly against capitalism and economic growth," Howard said. "They hate it. They don't believe in economic growth. They think economic growth is poison to the poor."

Show AllWell, with gestapo like 'security' for the insecure Aristocracy it is about time we hit back with some attacks of our own. The only real problem is the PR is ALWAYS going to be done by those who own the media, not Greenpeace or Amnesty International. You cannot do a bad PR job if you never are allowed to have a platform on the national stage. This is only a small scale version of things to come. Wait until the sea levels begin to rise and I'd say by 2020 at the very latest chaos will reign as the Aristocracy will no longer be able to deny the environmental catastrophe called America's global economy. With the Great Plains a shallow sea and the the Islands of Appalachia it will be hard to sell property in Florida won't it? Enjoy.
Sydney is being locked down into a virtual police state.
When workers and unionists marched against oppressive labour laws the conservatives warned of the ever present danger of violence and more violence, so you'd think that the federal opposition would see through the manufactured scare campaign.
Now that protesters are planning to show their displeasure at the state of the world and our so called leaders even the Labor party is echoing the fear of protester violence. What a bunch of gutless wonders! The hide of these people to sugar coat Iraq and then accuse people who chant slogans as the nasty violent ones.
I've marched in pretty well all the worker and peace rallies and I didn't see any violence. Funny how some minor scuffle suddenly gets covered on every major news service yet the thousands of peaceful marchers just get accused of being part of the mob.
I just watched a documentary on the use of Agent Orange in Vietnam by American Military. The multiple Birth defects are still occurring in 2nd and 3rd generations. The American Administration does not have to face claims of culpability since it has sovereign immunity. The chemical companies claim their production of Agent Orange containing deadly Dioxins was sponsored by US administration. Then the GOVT then claims there was no intent to injure innocent civilians....This scandalous episode in American Chemical Warfare has wreaked a deadly impact on generations of the Vietnamese, the Vietnamese environment and wildlife and the Scientists in the current Law Suit CAN'T collectively statistically prove the link between defoliating half of Vietnam and spreading Agent Orange wily nilly......
On another subject, the Australian MSM complicity in covering up BushCo's war crimes went into overdrive the minute Air Force 1 touched down in Sydney. Half the city is barrackcaded and is in virtual lock down. At a cost of $300 million to Australian taxpayers. So these War Criminals and Australian counterparts and other suck-holes [sycophants] can wine and dine at APEC.
[Incidentally Condi Rice came out of Air Force 1 like they'd pulled her out of a broom closet...]
The MSM's focus regarding the "Protesters" was to do only in their concern, regarding the potential for violence and NOT the relevant issues. This not only stifles debate, BUT ALTERNATIVES to Oligarchic Governmental/ Corporate/ Military/ Industrial/ Media are then never heard....PERIOD....They frame the terms of reference of their choosing PERIOD....
I agree with Tom Hastings September 3rd, 2007 2:36 pm
"It takes a great deal of patient outreach to a public before they understand that wrecking some property is not violent. The anti-globalization movement, generally speaking, is very poor at this image-managing and suffer public rejection as a direct result. Is this fair?...."
I believe while MSM in US and Australia is controlled by the likes of Ultra Right Wing globalized indifferent Corporatists like Rupert Murdock, there would no chance the real issues of War Crimes, Climate Change, Global Warming, Bio-Diversity, Globalization etc are NEVER debated....
Particularly when these International leaders can hide behind $100 million dollars worth of security and never feel or understand the PAIN they cause by their indifference and callous disregard for their abominable and illegal War Scam and Wanton Fraud in fighting a manufactured so called "War on Terrorism" using STATE SPONSORED TERRORISM......
I continue to be APPALLED...
I find myself in agreement with katsteevns. War, climate change, poverty, genocide, and many other issues discussed on Common Dreams can trace their origins to the denial of human rights to all but a few people. It is sad that the super wealthy/powerful few have convinced the majority of the planet that all their woes are their own fault. We have all been duped into believing that the wealthy and powerful are to be trusted with our future. If we do not awaken from our slumber soon, I fear we shall all become extinct. I will leave it up to you if you think you are better off as an economic and ecological slave or a non-existant memory.
Indeed Ray, the dumb-asses are people of status quo not interested in entreprenurial spirit of capitalism or even human rights to enter their realm, which they protect with their words and deeds. They have taken over centralized planning from USSR.
They are whom we should regard as retarted in their public policy implementation as they stop us from inventing and creating markets which address current needs. They are the one's who stop choice of products and services which drives capitalism.
Indeed, they are who we can call Capital-istas ( Capitalist with Fasicist tendencies ). Dupping us into perciving that they are looking after our capitalist needs ( preserving capitalism for our benefit). The Dumb-asses have no clue but only power to preserve their kingdoms. The rug on which they stand is about to be pulled out from under them. It's only due to forces of capitalism.
Aussie Mate - remind them of their dereliction of duty to capitalism. Remind them that Capitalism as it stands now is off-base. And that they are about to become bystanders.
Good day.
I agree Tom, what I find interesting about this and most other pieces of it's type is the fact that the asses of the world get the last word. Howard gets away with saying that people like ME are against capitalism. We hate it! We are against economic growth and think it hurts the poor.
Well since when do dumb-asses get to define what we think? Since they control the media? Since they get the last word on progressive web sites like Common Dreams? This self-given and progressive granted ability to define me and most of you is what I hate. I am not against progress or economic growth. I have made my fortune as a capitalist.
I'm against globalization, against forcing the little people out of work, against centralizing markets. I'm against moving jobs to where the labor is cheaper. I'm against importing illegal workers to work in the jobs that have to compete with the jobs that were exported to where the cheap labor is. I firmly believe in some trade barriers because they protect our economy and jobs as well as decentralizing production.
There are great dangers in centralized production. When all of a particular product is made in one place and for some reason an idiot like bush makes war against that place, the supply is dried up. Natural disasters could be as bad as an idiot in the white house. Either one is a threat to our national security. With global warming, it is even more important that food crops not become centralized to the region of earth that is best suited for them. There will be an increase in natural disasters and more extremes in weather during the next at least 200 years. These changes, which are unavoidable at this point, will cause unexpected drought in agricultural regions and could result in mass starvation.
The extreme security around "Evil Doer" summits is not because we are violent people who want to harm Evil Doer's like King George. It is to prevent us from being seen or heard by our own elected officials so that they can pretend that we don't exist. It is so the corporate press can take pictures that don't have protest signs in the background. So they can convince the masses that everything is good. To allow these dumb-asses to define us as violent is offensive. How many people did I kidnap and lock up in secret prisons around the world? How many civilians did I kill in Iraq and elsewhere in the world? How many policies did I make that caused the rich to get richer and the poor to be more miserable? I'm the one with the "Conservative Christian values" like Thou shalt not steal thou shalt not covet thou shalt not commit adultery thou shalt not bear false witness and of course do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
"[sycophants]"...hhmmm,,they come in all shapes and sizes and are scattered generously within earshot of most of us..
SIMONHHH is APPALLED as am I. At this point in time,,that is a true blessing considering how the majority of Americans and others are simply "in the dark", with no desire to see the urgency of the times, let alone act upon it.
I am speculating. Tell me I'm wrong.
Climate Change and issues for the poor are interesting
* NO on California "car tax" AB118 (Nunez)
* NO on AB616 (Jones) unless amended
* NO on SB23 (Cogdill) unless amended
* Clean Air Performance Professionals (CAPP) supports a Smog Check inspection & repair audit, gasoline oxygen cap and elimination of dual fuel CAFÉ credit to cut car impact over 50% in 1 year.
* Some folks believe corn ethanol in gasoline increases oil use and oil profit
* Ethanol uses lots of water
* A Smog Check audit would cut toxic car impact in ½ in 1 year. Chief Sherry Mehl, DCA/BAR, has never found out if what is broken on a Smog Check failed car gets fixed, never
* A corn ethanol waiver would stop a $1 billion California oil refinery welfare program coming from the federal government @ $0.51 per gallon of ethanol used
* About 60,000 barrels per day of the oil used by cars is allowed by the "renewable fuel" CAFE credit

It takes a great deal of patient outreach to a public before they understand that wrecking some property is not violent. The anti-globalization movement, generally speaking, is very poor at this image-managing and suffer public rejection as a direct result. Is this fair? Not usually, but sometimes. Is it remediable? Of course. Don't wear black masks, smile lots, outreach to locals and write write write for the media, stressing that the movement is absolutely nonviolent and only interferes with property, not people--and only property that is taking away basic human rights to clean air, drinkable water and uncontaminated food. The weaknesses of the movement are compounded by feeling, self-righteously, that they shouldn't have to explain themselves at this late date. This may be logical at one level but completely ineffective at most other levels.
Let's grab all these Climate Activists to help us target the War Mongers so we can save lives THAT way!The root problem is not the climate, it's basic human rights. Iraqi civilians are losing their chance for a future AS WE SPEAK. What good is a clean environment without civil rights and governments not heeding international law? Don't let the assorted issues divide us,the divisions prevent us from successful change. We must take on one problem at a time and mass genocide around the globe is the top priority at present. War has always been a racket,so let's end all war.
You can not predict the future of the climate as well as you can save a life now.
Is Iranian soil not part of the climate?? Then let's prevent an attack on that country ASAP!
