Plan B: The Fight Goes On
It's been a year since Plan B contraception (sometimes referred to as "the morning after pill") became available over the counter, much to the relief of American women. Sales of the pill are "booming," reports The Associated Press. This means that women (and couples) dealing with broken condoms, rape victims and others in desperate need of the emergency contraception have access to it, despite the best efforts of ultra-conservative groups and politicians.
But the fight is far from over. A coalition of anti-pill groups has filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming that the Food and Drug Administration was responding to political pressure when it approved Plan B. Others might say the agency was responding to political pressure for the three years it took to finally approve the pill.
A spokesperson from one of the groups hoping to reverse the FDA's ruling says that "women are paying the price" for what she says are inaccurate claims made by Plan B supporters.
But for many, Plan B's prescription-free status came not a moment too soon. Just three months before that, a study by the Guttmacher Institute showed that while the rate of unplanned pregnancies had remained stable in the U.S. at 49 percent, women living below the federal poverty line were five times more likely than women living at double the poverty line to experience an unplanned birth. Talk about paying a price. They were also thrice as likely to have an abortion.
In her Tuesday column on birth control in the Baltimore Sun, Cristina Page, spokesperson for birthcontrolwatch.org, pointed out that Republican presidential candidates are using certain key words and phrases that intend to not only overturn Roe v. Wade, but to further limit women's access to birth control by defining life as beginning "at conception rather than at the time of implantation."
It seems that given their druthers, a woman need not be pregnant in the eyes of science to be considered pregnant in the eyes of the law. This, of course, would radically change the status of Plan B, the (needlessly) controversial form of hormone-based contraception, much like many other forms of birth control, which prevents implantation.
Under definition of when life starts held by Romney and others, Plan B would go from being a form of birth control to being classified as an abortive agent. Other forms of contraception, such as hormone-based patches, shots, IUDs and daily pills, could possibly fall down the same rabbit hole.

This comes from the fundamentalist-Catholic theocrats & the intent of the doctrine is to reintroduce absolute rights of husbands over wives, nothing else & they employ human rights language solely as a strategy to position anyone maintaining her own bodily autonomy as a murderess. This is the inescapable logic of their position, though they wriggle and resort to a good many evasions when caught out.
"Under definition of when life starts held by Romney and others, Plan B would go from being a form of birth control to being classified as an abortive agent."
we've now suffered 7 years at the hands of a man that believes what he believes regardless of facts.
his notions become our laws. (though, he, of course, doesn't abide by those laws. war not being a pro-life endeavor, and all)
do we really need to be hindered by yet another person's notions?
again... regardless of facts?
And in Iraqiranistan, can We also go to plan B, or better yet withdrawal NOW; or must we wait for the Bush abortion?
I always wonder what birth control methods are used by those hollering the loudest against prevention. Dollars to doughnuts they are using or have used something. Hypocrisy is inexhaustible with these pro-lifers. Heavens to Murgatroid if one of them should be raped. All men demanding taking the morning after pill the market need to get a vasectomy. Just a suggetion.
I know lots of people who have had to use Plan B. We all have the right to safe and effective birth control.
I'd also like to add Plan B is for use after unprotected sex and just because you take it does not mean there was even the potential for a fetus to develop. A woman may take Plan B and it may turn out that it wasn't the time of the month for an egg to be fertilized anyway. It might be the start or the end of the cycle.
dcbeltway, I think the idea is that any woman WILLING to "kill" even a potential fetus should be regarded as a criminal. They seem to feel it should be illegal to even think about stopping a pregnancy.
The Christofascists opted for gradual intimidation & attrition to eliminate self-governed reproduction, so that they could have good christian soldiers who would have to go into the army -- or into Mitt Romney's campaign -- who would receive no other support or education that might make them independent from Jesus' spokesmen.
Keep fighting until the next administration has to face the consequences of this stupid policy decision (if they're stupid enough to let you get away with that strategy you can point to the consequences of withdrawal and argue dumb or dumber in 2012).
Dichterfreund (what does that mean by the way?):
You have made two excellent points. What these idiots are trying to do is reinstall a religious patriarcy to keep women in their place (barefoot and pregnant). The other point about providing canon fodder and followers has been practiced by the Catholic church for millenia.
My point is I want all these bastards and the government out of my bedroom, out of my doctors office, and out of my uterous, and out of my private life. Period! It's MY body and MY life. Get the f**k OUT!
"All men demanding taking the morning after pill the market need to get a vasectomy."
Good idea. And make them stay home with the kids
until they are in school, then later leave work to
take them to the doctor, attend the parent/teacher
conferences, shop for school clothes, get them ready
for school every morning, wash their clothes, feed
them. Then after all that, they still only have the
right to dictate to themselves and noone else what
is right and wrong.
Lets fight about birth control while the corporate bankers and arms makers bank hundreds of billions from hundreds of thousands dying in Iraq, good plan people, way to keep your priorities straight.
No child left behind
mrraven: Lighten up. Most of us are pretty good at multi-tasking at this point. We have our priorities straight. The number of things that are at the top of the list just gets longer, that's all.
Rebel Farmer - true enough. mrraven's argument reflects the old-fashioned notion that we can't work on "women's issues" until all of the "men's issues" have been sorted out.
Plan C: anticipate a President and Congress will be elected in 2008 that will be amenable to amending the Constitution; get ready now to make it happen then.
Rebel Farmer,
"Dichter" is "poet", so "Poet-Friend" (I meant to capitalize "Freund" also), a reminder of the German radicals (and in particular a mentor who was in the German resistance).
"The other point about providing canon fodder and followers has been practiced by the Catholic church for millenia."
Until the 19th century, population controls were inescapable burdens, especially for women; the sudden progress in farming, industry, medicine suddenly gave Europe the problem of what to do with its extras & empire, war & finally fascism were 'solutions'. The Church leaders retreat to pre-modern theology -- "see, if you go the other way, you get Hitler" being their reductive rationalization.
"mrraven's argument reflects the old-fashioned notion that we can't work on "women's issues" until all of the "men's issues" have been sorted out."
The neofascists have also packaged the "war on terror" as a fight for women's rights against islamic oppression, when the reverse is true -- they are the Western version of what they claim to be fighting, and their intent to criminalize all forms of birth control, from abortion through contraception to "FATHERS' RIGHTS" -- which means men have a right to have sex & to produce children regardless of their wives' or partners' consent -- proves it.
Actually Islamic teachings have nothing against the use of birth control unlike fundamnetalist Christianity.
These neocons also use neocolonialist ideas that we are liberating Muslims women to advance thier true agenda. Iraqi Muslim women already had a lot of rights and freedoms and were highly educated before the war. They are now losing thier rights under the occupation and are losing thier lives also. Afghan women do not feel free as they are now under the same War Lords who raped and pillaged during the civil war--these people are equally as bad as the Taliban from an Afghan perspective. Afghans deserve a third way neither War Lord nor Taliban ruling thier country for everyone's human rights to prevail.
YUP we are living in the US under a bunch of fascists. I see it more and more everyday and I really am contemplating leaving. I don't see the Democrats as our liberation from all this as they are just as complicit. I see freedoms at all levels from birth control to the right to privacy eroded daily. The constitution is dead.
Well, many things have been said about Plan B birth control pills but the fact is that it is very effective in preventing unwanted pregnancy. It helps those women who forgot to ask their partner to use barrier methods or they fear condom might have broken while intercourse. It also helps in avoiding pregnancy in rape victims.
